Les sanisettes actuelles, avant leur modernisation en 2024

Quelques chiffres.

Public Toilets in Paris: What to Know, Where to Go

Sure, in a dream holiday you wouldn’t need to interrupt your itinerary for something as mundane as a search for a public toilet. But sometimes reality hits, especially if you’re travelling with kids … Fortunately, in Paris, it’s not as difficult as you might imagine to aller aux toilettes …

Paris public toilets

Lavatory de la Madeleine

tour eiffel toilettes

Let’s start with the most glamorous public toilet imaginable … This Belle Époque public convenience, dating from 1905, has relaunched after closing in 2011, when it was officially listed as a historic site. During that time, the space was lovingly restored — woodwork polished to a high shine, chipped Art Nouveau tiles replaced — and a visit here is well worth the €2 charge (which covers the attendant and cleaning costs). One for all lovers of Paris architectural history … and anyone near the Église de la Madeleine who has a more practical reason for visiting a restroom! The entrance to the Lavatory de la Madeleine can be found by the south-east corner of the curch, and it’s open from 10am-6pm every day.

Les Sanisettes

Paris’s public toilets have come a long way from les pissoirs of decades past …

Paris public toilets

Now they’re private, gender-inclusive, and high-tech to boot: an automated washing and disinfecting system activates after each session to ensure (at least in theory) that using a sanisette is a hygienic and stress-free process.

Paris public toilets

Sanisettes are also free, and come with easy-to-follow, English-language instructions. Just be aware that the door will automatically unlock after 20 minutes. (Hopefully, you’ll be well gone and back to your itinerary by then!)

There are over 400 sanisettes situated all around Paris. To locate them, bookmark this link . The information pop-up for each listing will tell you its operating times (those on main roads and near key monuments are usually open 24/7; others tend to be 6am-10pm) as well as if it’s disability-friendly (‘access PMR’ will note either ‘ oui ’ or ‘ non ’).

Paris public toilets

When nature calls, you’ll find public toilets in most large parks in Paris. In the Jardin du Luxembourg, for example, there’s a free bathroom next to the restaurant, La Terrasse de Madame, and another by the children’s play zone. That of the Tuileries, which costs 70c, is located by the Place de la Concorde entrance (above). If you’re heading west from here, along the Jardin des Champs-Élysées, you’ll see, on the right, the historic toilet kiosk; this one costs €2 per person.

Paris public toilets

At the risk of sounding like a cultural philistine, Paris’s free museums do great double-duty as a public restroom. In the Marais, there’s the Musée Carnavalet; just west of Place de la Concorde, the Petit Palais; and, up in the 9th, a little south-east of the Moulin Rouge, is the Musée de la Vie Romantique (above). (Another for this list is the Musée Bourdelle down near the Tour Montparnasse, although it’s closed for renovation until January 2023.)

Once you’ve located and used the museum toilets, you might even want to stay a while and peruse the permanent collections (exhibitions usually require a paid ticket) or, in the case of the Musée de la Romantique and Petit Palais, even take tea at these museums’ lovely cafés . Perhaps, if so, a second toilet trip will be required before you leave!

Department Stores

Paris public toilets

A department store is, of course, an ideal location for a lavatory stop. And there’s nothing to feel ashamed about; after all, you’re very likely to buy something while you’re inside the store and passing all sorts of tempting displays. (There’s a reason department store toilets are never located right by the front door!) With this in mind, always keep a mental map of where you are in location to Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, Le BHV and Le Bon Marché.

Paris public toilets

Using a toilet hotel, however, is a slightly grey area … The lobby restrooms are supposed to be for overnight guests as well as bar and restaurant customers, because their money helps to keep these toilets well-maintained. But if you choose a larger hotel, such as the Westin, it’s easy enough to be discreet about the fact that you’re only there for one reason. Just walk in as though you know where you’re going, and quickly scan the lobby for les toilettes signs. If you do need to appease any guilt you feel about using a hotel’s amenities, you can always sit down at the bar for a quick coffee, tea or wine to make up for it.

Paris public toilets

In this instance, you’ll most likely have to buy a coffee, even if a un express at le zinc , if you want to access the WC. Unless, say, you have a squirming child in tow and come across a sympathetic waiter, in which case no money will be needed and all you need to leave is a ‘ Merci, Monsieur/Madame ’ on the way out.

WORLD CAPITAL OF PERFUME Grasse, Alpes-Maritimes (France)

Grasse's exceptional geographical location has given the region a particularly pleasant climate favourable to growing numerous floral and aromatic species. Benefiting from the sunshine of the south of France, the mildness of the Mediterranean, the coolness of the nights due to the altitude and the abundance of waterways, the city enjoys an exceptional microclimate. Between land and sea, the pace of life in Grasse has always been set by the fragrance flower harvest. The guild of glove-makers was already using local crops in the Middle Ages to perfume their leather, and the rise of the perfume industry has established growing perfume plants as age-old Grasse know-how. Rose de Mai, jasmine, tuberose, violet and orange blossom were long grown by local producers — until the decline of the industry in the 1950s, accelerated by the importation of raw materials from abroad and the development of synthetic molecules. Since 2016, the entire Grasse ecosystem has been working to revive the production of perfume flowers. Fragonard is particularly proud to support these wonderful projects and the growing of the emblematic flowers that have been key to Grasse perfumery's story! Grasse remains the city of traditional perfumery and the homeland of many famous "noses", and is still the must-visit location for all those who love quality perfumery.

The construction of the Eiffel Tower for the 1889 Universal Exposition sparked “Eiffelomania,” a craze for objects imprinted with the likeness of the tower. This mania reverberated in the fashion world, with journals touting the latest fabrics, colors, and styles named “Eiffel.” But the tower's association with fashion went beyond the materiality of clothing. Careful examination of news reports and fashion chronicles from the fin de siècle period reveals that the tower was frequently cast in sartorial terms. In describing the tower's manner of “dressing,” its “clothing” and “outfits,” these discourses brought to the fore the shared theoretical bonds between fashion and architecture. This article traces the reception of the Eiffel Tower in fin de siècle Paris and argues that the sartorial imagery associated with the tower conceptualizes architecture as a form of fashion.

Re the Louvre and those who emailed got this response::

“Dear Visitor,

We regret not being able to be precise on the date of posting of the slots not available for this summer.

We are waiting for information from the Prefecture of Police of Paris on the possibility of accessing the museum during this specific days.

In addition, some days, the first slots of the day are not on sale: we are not able to guarantee an opening of the museum at 9 am on days when public transport will be very impacted according to the site Plan ahead the games.

We prefer not to sell tickets and let our visitors organize their visit and stay in Paris, and have to cancel their reservations because of requests related to the organization of the Opening Ceremony of the Games and the events.”

Keep checking here forTickets: https://www.louvre.fr/en/visit/hours-admission#ticket-prices

Re Eiffel Tower Tickets:

“Ticket sales – Summer 2024, including the JOP

The Eiffel Tower will be open during the Olympic Games except on July 26.

Exceptionally, tickets for visits from June 17 will go on sale later than usual (instead of 60 days before the day of the visit).

No tickets for this summer (including during the Olympic Games) are currently on sale, so do not buy tickets from websites promoting such offers.

Keep an eye on our official online ticket office.“

See: https://ticket.toureiffel.paris/en

Thank you for the reply. This information was exactly what I was looking for, it is much apprecaited.

No problem! The Louvre has other dates like 17th July tickets available now with the whole following week shaded out.

FYI There’s so much to navigate when having these iconic venues open and hosting the Olympic Games at the same time. The final security re the Opening Ceremony decisions have yet to be made.

Also, people won't be allowed to walk around Paris without a special pass before and during the Olympics. Everyone needs to upload/provide personal information to the government through a website to obtain these special passes which takes the form of a QR code to be stored in your phone.

“From 18 July and throughout the period of the Olympic Games (26 July to 11 August) some areas of the capital will be sectioned off into zones and you’ll need a “Pass Jeux” (Games Pass) to move around within them.

The pass takes the form of a QR code which can either be downloaded onto a smartphone or printed out.” See: https://www.rfi.fr/en/france/20240513-who-needs-qr-codes-for-getting-around-during-paris-olympics

Last Monday, 13th May, the government used an emergency alert system, complete with siren, to communicate this requirement to everyone on their phones. This system is normally reserved for more serious things like nuclear attack. Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
