Placard reading ‘Justice for Samuel’ at protest

Three arrested after gay man beaten to death in Galicia

Protests mounted across Spain after 24-year-old nursing assistant Samuel Luiz died following attack outside nightclub

Spanish police have arrested three people in connection with the killing of a young gay man whose death in a possible homophobic attack over the weekend shocked the country and sparked nationwide protests.

Samuel Luiz, a 24-year-old nursing assistant, was out with friends in the Galician city of A Coruña in the early hours of Saturday when an argument started outside a nightclub.

His friends told El Mundo that Luiz had stepped out of the club to make a video call when two passersby accused him of trying to film them on his phone. Luiz explained he was talking to a friend by video, but he was allegedly attacked by one of the passersby and left with a badly bruised face.

Five minutes later, the assailant allegedly returned with 12 others who beat Luiz unconscious. He was taken to hospital, where he died later on Saturday morning.

On Tuesday evening, Spain’s Policía Nacional said three people had been arrested as “the alleged perpetrators of the violence assault that ended Samuel Luiz’s life”.

In a statement , the force said the three were aged between 20 and 25 and lived in A Coruña. It did not rule out further arrests and said the investigation would remain open until all the facts of the case had been clarified.

The attack prompted revulsion across Spain and led to demonstrations on Monday night in cities including A Coruña, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Salamanca, Bilbao and Zaragoza. Demonstrators carried signs with slogans including “Your homophobia is killing us”. Politicians in Madrid have asked the central government for explanations after some protesters in the capital were kettled and charged by riot police late on Monday.

Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, denounced the killing and offered his condolences to Luiz’s friends and family. “I’m confident that the police investigation will soon find those who murdered Samuel and shed light on what happened,” he tweeted on Monday. “It was a savage and merciless act. We will not take a step backwards when it comes to rights and freedoms and Spain will not tolerate this.”

José Miñones, the central government’s delegate in Galicia, said police were examining whether the attack was motivated by homophobia, adding that the investigation was at a crucial stage. He said 15 people had given statements about what happened. “The [security] cameras are going to help us clarify what happened,” he told Radio Voz on Tuesday.

The killing came less than a week after Spain’s annual Pride celebrations and days after Sánchez’s Socialist-led coalition government approved a draft law to protect and strengthen the rights of LGBTI people.

Campaigners said the attack was proof of the violence to which LGBTI people are still subjected. “We are being abused and murdered for being LGBTI,” the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals said in a statement on Twitter . “We will not rest.”

The federation said that while events such as Pride made it easy to “celebrate diversity for one month a year, this will not stop until we are all 100% committed to it for ever”.

A study published last year by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights found that 41% of those surveyed in Spain had experienced some form of harassment for being LGBTI in the previous 12 months. It also found 32% of respondents in Spain often or always avoided certain places or locations for fear of being assaulted, threatened or harassed due to being LGBTI.

Woman suspected of kidnapping and killing girl is beaten to death by mob in Mexican tourist city

Updated on: March 29, 2024 / 7:47 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A mob in the Mexican tourist city of Taxco brutally beat a woman to death Thursday because she was suspected of kidnapping and killing a young girl, rampaging just hours before the city's famous Holy Week procession.

The mob formed after an 8-year-old girl disappeared Wednesday. Her body was found on a road on the outskirts of the city early Thursday. Security camera footage appeared to show a woman and a man loading a bundle, which may have been the girl's body, into a taxi.

The mob surrounded the woman's house Thursday, threatening to drag her out. Police took the woman into the bed of a police pickup truck, but then stood by - apparently intimidated by the crowd - as members of the mob dragged her out of the truck and down onto the street where they stomped, kicked and pummeled her until she lay, partly stripped and motionless.

Mexico Violence

Police then picked her up and took her away, leaving the pavement stained with blood. The Guerrero state prosecutors' office later confirmed the woman died of her injuries.

"This is the result of the bad government we have," said a member of the mob, who gave her name as Andrea but refused to give her last name. "This isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened," she said, referring to the murder of the girl, "but this is the first time the people have done something."

"We are fed up," she said. "This time it was an 8-year-old girl."

Mexico Violence

The mayor of Taxco, Mario Figueroa, said he shared residents' outrage over the killing. Figueroa said a total of three people beaten by the mob - the woman and two men - had been taken away by police. Video from the scene suggested they had also been beaten, though The Associated Press witnessed only the beating of the woman.

The state prosecutors' office said the two men were hospitalized. There was no immediate information on their condition.

In a statement issued soon after the event, Figueroa complained he did not get any help from the state government for his small, outnumbered municipal police force.

"Unfortunately, up to now we have not received any help or answers," Figueroa said.

The Good Friday eve religious procession, which dates back centuries in the old silver-mining town, went off as planned Thursday night.

People crowded Taxco's colonial streets to watch hooded men walking while whipping themselves or carrying heavy bundles of thorns across their bare shoulders in penitence to emulate the suffering of Jesus Christ carrying the cross.

But the earlier flash of violence cast a pall over the already solemn procession, which draws thousands to the small town.

Many participants wore small white ribbons of mourning.

"I never thought that in a touristic place like Taxco we would experience a lynching," said Felipa Lagunas, a local elementary school teacher. "I saw it as something distant, in places far from civilization ... I never imagined that my community would experience this on such a special day."

Mob attacks in rural Mexico are common. In 2018, two men were torched by an angry crowd in the central state of Puebla, and the next day a man and woman were dragged from their vehicle, beaten and set afire in the neighboring state of Hidalgo.

But Taxco and other cities in Guerrero state have been particularly prone to violence.

In late January, Taxco endured a days-long strike by private taxi and van drivers who suffered threats from one of several drug gangs fighting for control of the area. The situation was so bad that police had to give people rides in the back of their patrol vehicles.

Around the same time, the bullet-ridden bodies of two detectives were found on the outskirts of Taxco. Local media said their bodies showed signs of torture.

In February, Figueroa's own bulletproof car was shot up by gunmen on motorcycles.

In Taxco and throughout Guerrero state, drug cartels and gangs routinely prey on the local population, demanding protection payments from store owners, taxi and bus drivers. They kill those who refuse to pay.

Cartel violence in Guerrero has continued unabated this year.

In February, investigators in Guerrero said they confirmed the contents of a grisly drug cartel video showing gunmen shooting, kicking and burning the corpses of their enemies. Prosecutors said they had reached the remote scene of the crime in the mountain township of Totolapan and  found five charred bodies .

In January, an alleged  cartel attack in Guerrero  killed at least six people and injured 13 others.

The U.S. State Department urges Americans not to travel to Guerrero, citing widespread crime and violence. "Armed groups operate independently of the government in many areas of Guerrero," the U.S. advisory says . "Members of these groups frequently maintain roadblocks and may use violence towards travelers."

Residents said they have had enough, even though the violence may further affect tourism.

"We know the town lives off of Holy Week (tourism) and that this is going to mess it up. There will be a lot of people who won't want to come anymore," said Andrea, the woman who was in the mob. "We make our living off tourism, but we cannot continue to allow them to do these things to us."

Mr Ciatti, from Scandicci in Tuscany, Italy, was visiting the area on holiday at the time of his death.

The suspects are Russian citizens from Chechnya, who are thought to have been seeking asylum in Spain at the time of the beating.

Mr Ciatti worked as a fruit seller in his hometown and was on holiday with friends who were also beaten during the attack, but escaped without serious injury.

Shocking footage taken from inside the club shows the moment Mr Ciatti was set upon by three men before being kicked in the head.

Police say the suspects did not know Mr Ciatti, there was no verbal altercation before the fight took place, and the whole incident could have started over a single push

Two men - the victim and one of his friends - are seen lying on the floor as shocked revellers crowd around them.

Three men are seen surrounding them, and one of them kicks Mr Ciatti in the head.

He was rushed to hospital in a serious condition and later died from his injuries.

The three men fled the nightclub but were later arrested by police.

They are set to go on trial in the region, and prosecutors said they will seek the highest penalty possible.

Mr Ciatti’s family have travelled to Spain to make arrangements to have his body returned to his home country.

Investigators are also focusing on whether nightclub owners were abiding by the law amid concerns that no security guards appeared to help Mr Ciatti in the video.

A minute of silence for Mr Ciatti was also held on Monday.

Brit dies after being ‘beaten and knelt on by bouncers and police’ in Spain

Tobias White-Sansom with his two children

A British man has died after he was attacked by bouncers at a nightclub in Spain, a report claims.

Tobias White-Sansom, 35, from Nottingham, had travelled to Magaluf, in Majorca, where his millionaire brother has a villa, for a holiday.

The shocking incident happened in the Boomerang nightclub, known for its celebrity nights and guest DJs, where the dad-of-two was partying with his girlfriend.

According to his brother, Maximillian White, Tobias had gone back inside to retrieve his T-shirt but was told his belongings had been put away.

Maximillian, who was not there but heard from witnesses, told the Mirror his brother then went for another drink at the bar when a security guard grabbed him from behind.

It’s believed Tobias resisted because he didn’t know who it was, which is when ‘three or four’ bouncers allegedly took him down and beat him ‘really badly’.

‘Then they handcuffed him and beat him really bad again,’ Maximillian said. ‘They then took him to another area and beat him again. The whole time he was handcuffed and restrained.

Security guards restrained the Brit at Boomerang Night Club in Magaluf

‘They knelt on his head, his neck, beat him, took his shoes off and tried to break his toes. At the same time they were removing jewellery off him and putting it into their pocket.’

According to what lawyers told Maximillian, the chaotic scenes lasted about 12 minutes before police turned up.

At the time, the victim looked ‘semi-unconscious and wasn’t holding his own neck with his head rolling’, his brother, who is set to become England’s first medical cannabis billionaire, claimed.

He added: ‘Police grabbed him, threw him straight to the floor, put another set of handcuffs on him so he had two sets on, then all eight officers decided to kneel on him while he was panicking.

‘Then a crowd of 50, 60 people gathered with some screaming “you’re going to kill him”. My brother was apparently pleading for his life.’

It is alleged Tobias then went into cardiac arrest. He died in Llatzer Hospital in Palma, five days after the incident.

Maximillian has now vowed to ‘close down’ the strip in Magaluf where the club is because it is not ‘controlled’.

He said: ‘I am not going to leave here, especially as his body is still here. I will buy the Magaluf strip and I will close it down permanently if I have to, because it’s a danger to people.’

Spanish police said they were called to reports of an assault on a nightclub bouncer by an ‘intoxicated person’.

Boomerang nightclub in Magaluf

They further state that Tobias had taken a mix of three different types of drugs and alcohol in his body that fatal night.

A spokesperson for Guardia Civil told Metro.co.uk: ‘This man was expelled from the nightclub for his aggressive behavior and refusal to wear a T-shirt.

‘The Guardia Civil responded to a notice from the establishment’s private security.

‘This man assaulted the doorman of the nightclub for which the Guardia Civil arrested him for a crime of injury.

‘The agents had to reduce him due to his resistance and aggressiveness.

‘He was taken to the hospital as a arrested person and the health services administered a painkiller.’

Tobias’ family described him as a ‘loving dad’ and a ‘kind-hearted’ and ‘hardworking’ man.

They are now fighting to bring his body ‘back home’.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Boomerang for a comment.

At Spanish Disco Where Fire Killed 13, Grief and Unanswered Questions

With only four of the bodies pulled from the charred remains of a nightclub complex near the Mediterranean Coast identified, the authorities are asking families for DNA samples.

Three uniformed figures stand in front of an ornate building painted red, black and white and bearing gold trims.

By Rachel Chaundler

Reporting from Murcia, Spain

At midday Monday, a 22-year-old man walked out of Police Headquarters in the city of Murcia near the Mediterranean Coast of Spain with head bowed. He had hoped to get information about his half brother, who did not make it home after a fire raged through a popular disco complex on the outskirts of town a day earlier, claiming at least 13 lives.

But the Murcia City Police had a question of their own: Could the missing man’s father and three young children provide DNA samples that might help identify the victim?

“They said it might take days to clear up,” said the half brother, Cristopher Miranda. “I’m devastated.”

A few hours earlier, the City Council had released a statement saying it would file a criminal complaint against one of the two nightclubs destroyed by the fire, Teatre, S.L., accusing it of operating without a license after ignoring an order to close in January 2022.

“We are facing an unprecedented tragedy, and we are going to act forcefully to determine responsibilities,” the deputy mayor of urban planning, Antonio Navarro, said at a news conference.

Speaking to reporters outside the charred complex on Monday evening, a lawyer for one of the clubs that burned, La Fonda Milagros — which shared the space with Teatre, denied the city’s accusations. “My clients were not aware of any order to close,” said the lawyer, Francisco Adán.

The area where the disaster unfolded had once been popular for nightlife. Twenty-five years ago, it was known for discos and karaoke bars that drew crowds celebrating occasions like university graduations, said Jesús Jiménez, president of the Regional Federation of Hospitality and Tourism. But in recent years, many of those establishments have closed down.

Mr. Jiménez said that the Teatre club, popular for birthday parties, had been operating illegally for months. The owners divided it into two nightclubs, Teatre and La Fonda, he said.

All 13 bodies recovered from the debris by firefighters on Sunday were found in La Fonda, where flames had ripped through the upper floor and caused the roof to collapse.

Mr. Jiménez said there was blame to go around.

“The owners have committed a crime, and the authorities have been negligent for not verifying the closure of the establishment,” he said.

On Monday, it was still unsafe for detectives and forensic investigators to enter the ruins of the Teatre-La Fonda complex, according to Diego Seral, a spokesman for the national police. “Possible criminal responsibilities and the cause of the fire will be determined once there is a guarantee that the remaining infrastructures are safe,” he said.

A bartender from a nearby nightclub who was surveying the ruins said the full seriousness of what had happened the night before was not immediately apparent. The bartender, Melania Bernal, 26, who works at the Kallejon, a few dozen yards away from the Teatre-La Fonda complex, recalled the lights going out and her building being evacuated, but she said at first she thought it was just a power outage.

“When I went outside and saw the flames, I was frightened,” she said.

The authorities quickly set up a center to support the families of those missing at the Murcia Sports Pavilion. On Monday morning, Dubis Reyes, the mother of one of them, went there in search of information.

“My son is still missing,” she said.

Ms. Reyes said she had not heard from her son, Yosi Esteban Rivero Reyes, 34, since Sunday morning. She was heading next to Police Headquarters to explain that she believed her son had been carrying her nephew’s wallet, which she thought might have caused confusion.

At the police station, families were bringing in personal objects like toothbrushes to help the authorities identify the victims. So far, only four of the 13 bodies recovered had been identified through fingerprints. DNA samples from those who cannot be identified that way will be sent to the National Institute of Toxicology for analysis.

A stream of family members went in and out on Monday morning, arriving and leaving in taxis organized by the City Council. Shortly after midday, as a group left the building and got into a waiting taxi, one of the women, supported by two younger men, was in tears.

Mr. Miranda said his half brother Rafael, a 37-year-old balloon factory worker, had been celebrating a friend’s birthday at the club. “All of them are missing, all eight of them,” he said.

He was met at the doors by two of his father’s friends who had come to offer their support. “It’s just not believable, a thing of these dimensions,” said one of the friends, Diego Merchan, 46, who is an agricultural worker.

With a population of just under half a million, Murcia is Spain’s seventh-largest city. Its main industries are agriculture and tourism

Now, a city where residents sometimes boast of having the most hours of sunshine on the Spanish mainland has declared three days of mourning. Its mayor has ordered the flags at the City Council lowered to half-staff.

Wearing a dark suit and black tie, Mayor José Ballesta met somberly with local police and fire chiefs at the disaster area on Monday morning and warned that the death toll might rise. Of the 18 people reported missing on Sunday, only three have been found alive.

The Spanish news media has widely published a video of a father playing an audio his daughter sent to her mother from the club at 6:06 Sunday morning.

“Mami,” the daughter can be heard saying, “I love you. We’re going to die.”

Tourists brutally beaten by security guards on Pattaya Soi 6

tourist beaten to death in spanish nightclub

PATTAYA, Thailand – Two videos captured by tourists revealed a brutal assault by three security guards on two foreign tourists on Pattaya Soi 6, the popular nightlife street in North Pattaya. The incident, which took place on the evening of May 26, in full view of numerous onlookers, shocked both Thai and foreign tourists, including bar employees.

tourist beaten to death in spanish nightclub

Ms. Samorn (surname withheld), a 38-year-old cashier at the bar, told reporters that three foreign tourists had been drinking at the bar. Two paid their bills individually, while the third kept changing seats and interacting with the staff. When the staff asked his friends to settle his bill, the tourist in the white shirt argued, claiming he had already paid. After an exchange of harsh words, the tourist accused the bar of overcharging and refused to pay, leading to a scuffle with other customers. The bar then called the security guards.

Upon the guards’ arrival, one tourist paid the bill of 2,800 baht, but tensions flared when the tourist in the white shirt pushed one of the guards, leading to the violent confrontation captured in the videos. Ms. Samorn noted that the guards’ intervention likely prevented further harm to herself and other customers.

Later that night, Pattaya City Police Chief Pol. Col. Navin Teerawit ordered the detention of the three guards, identified as Ball (27), Tom (36), and Ice (24). They confessed to the assault as shown in the videos. Ball stated that the altercation began when he was pushed and punched by one of the tourists, resulting in a broken nose that required six stitches. He admitted that their response was excessive, driven by anger, and apologized for their actions.

Pol. Col. Navin Teerawit reprimanded the guards, emphasizing that their duty is to ensure tourists’ safety, not cause harm. He stressed that their actions severely damaged Pattaya’s reputation as a tourist destination and that they should have called the police to handle the situation. The guards were warned to control their emotions and not resort to violence while performing their duties.

The three guards, who admitted their guilt, were taken into custody for further legal proceedings. Surveillance footage of the incident, showing the escalating conflict from the tourists’ argument with the cashier to the guards’ violent intervention, was submitted as evidence.

Horrific footage shows four bouncers beating a British tourist to a pulp at a nightclub in Zante . Three beastly blokes keep the tourist in a headlock while a fourth bouncer rains punches on him in the sickening clip, shared on social media.

The security staff, all wearing black branded polo shirts, take turns to strike the next blow - including elbows and knees to the tourist's head - as he struggles to scramble free.

It happened at CherryBay nightclub on the Greek island of Zakynthos - known as Zante - a popular tourist destination with young Brits hungry to party and enjoy bustling nightlife. One man has since been arrested, reports claim tonight.

It remains unconfirmed, however, what led to the fracas.

At one stage in the clip though, the man, who at this stage has a bloodied face, appears to free himself from the clutches of his barbarous attackers, before one them lands a spine-chilling blow to his face.

The force of the punch saw the Briton’s head rock back and slam against the wall behind him. He is then thrown to the floor by one of the bouncers before being booted in the face by another.

The dishevelled Brit is thankfully led out of the room by his friends and the terror appears to end.

Mirror has approached CherryBay nightclub for comment.

Officials identify 75-year-old tourist beaten to death at new orleans hotel.

NEW ORLEANS - A 75-year-old man from Missouri visiting New Orleans with his family was beaten to death in a hotel late Thursday night.

WWL-TV reports New Orleans police were called out to the Avenue Plaza Hotel on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans just before 11 p.m. Officers arrived to find the unresponsive tourist in a hotel room with apparent head trauma.

The man, later identified by the coroner as David Sorenson, was taken to a hospital but did not survive the attack, the news outlet reported. Police believe he was physically beaten to death with fists rather than a weapon.

Officers then located the suspect, 29-year-old Martin Furtado, in the room's bathroom. Furtado was not staying in that room or in the hotel. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was booked on a $350,000 bond, according to WWL-TV.
