Where Is Skardu?

In the east of Pakistan’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan region at around 2,230 meters altitude lies Skardu, one of the region’s most important cities, It’s situated right along the Shigar River and the Indus River, which separates the Karakoram Range from the Himalaya Mountain Range, This location blesses the region with a unique landscape and ecosystem, which can be found in few other places in the world.

Weather In Skardu

Girl enjoying the sun at Deosai National Park in October.

Skardu’s climate is relatively mild compared to other places in northern Pakistan. The warmest months are June to September, when temperatures can get as high as 30°C, and the coldest months are December to February, when temperatures frequently drop in the minus degrees. Expect temperatures around 10°C during the months in between. Rainfall is highest from December through May.

Best Time To Visit Skardu

The best time to visit Skardu is summer from June to September. It’s the optimal time to enjoy lush green landscapes at comfortable temperatures without much rainfall and escape from the suffocating heat in other parts of Pakistan. October is another great time to visit Skardu in order to experience the region in golden autumn colors. Winter turns the region around Skardu into a beautiful white wonderland but it will be more difficult to access the city during this season.

How To Get To Skardu

Beautiful views of mountains and a river on the road from Gilgit to Skardu.

Getting to Skardu is both a blessing and a curse. Luckily, you have more options than with most other places in northern Pakistan since Skardu actually has its own airport.

Here’s how to get to Skardu:

There are daily direct flights from Islamabad and Karachi to Skardu airport. The flights are operated by national airline PIA with small aircrafts. Despite their relatively short durations, flights to Skardu tend to be quite expensive, ranging around $80 – $200 per one-way flight. The (very scenic) approach to the mountainous region is extremely difficult for pilots but flying into Skardu is still significantly safer than reaching the city by road.

Getting to Skardu by road is a lot cheaper than flying but good luck ! I thought I traveled on the world’s most dangerous road near Naran but that was before I experienced the scariest drive of my life from Gilgit to Skardu. The road that connects Skardu with Gilgit (a.k.a the rest of the world) is in such abysmal condition that near-death experiences are almost guaranteed on the way. I’m sparing you from some horrendous details here but it’s no wonder that terrible accidents do happen . In addition, frequent landslides will almost certainly delay your journey by a couple of hours. Our bus got stuck in a small village for over five hours because of this and our six-hour journey turned into a 16-hour journey.

That being said, if you’re broke like me and still decide to visit Skardu by road, there are a couple of options. You can take a public bus from other cities in Pakistan, join a group tour, or hire an experienced private driver. Please don’t attempt to drive on these roads yourself.

Hotels In Skardu

Foreign girl sitting in front of an airplane wreck at Shangrila Resort in Skardu, Pakistan.

There are many hotels in and around Skardu. If you’re looking for a high-end experience, you might want to consider staying at one of the famous hotels near Skardu. This includes the Serena Shigar Hotel inside Shigar Fort and the Shangrila Resort around the Lower Kachura Lake.

If you’re looking for something on the lower end and still desire a central location, I suggest staying near the actual city. I had a great experience staying at Graceland Resort near Skardu city.

How To Get Around Skardu

The best way to get around Skardu is with a private driver or a tour guide. I personally had a wonderful experience with Kamil Tours . You can also ask your hotel for help.

Best Places To Visit Near Skardu

The region around Skardu is full of amazing tourist destinations.

Here are some suggestions of places to visit near Skardu, arranged in an optimal order:

Skardu City

Starting off with the city itself. Despite its regional importance, Skardu is a relatively small city, meaning it can easily be explored in a couple of hours. Visit Skardu Fort and shop for local crafts and textiles at the city’s souvenir market. Don’t forget to haggle!

Deosai National Park

Barapani stream at Deosai National Park, Pakistan

Ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 meters altitude, the Deosai Plains near Skardu are the second-highest alpine plateau in the world. Deosai National Park was first established to protect the Himalayan Brown Bear and other endangered species and is currently on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list. Visit Deosai National Park to enjoy incredible wide and empty landscapes as well as the waters of Kalapani , Barapani , and Sheosar Lake , The drive south from Skardu to Deosai National Park takes one to two hours up a mountain pass.

Manthoka Waterfall

Manthoka Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall about an hour southeast of Skardu. Surrounded by a serene green valley, Manthoka Waterfall emerges from the mountains so tall and majestically that it’s hard to believe the waterfall is actually manmade! Shower yourself in the waterfall’s pristine water, take photos of silky streams and rainbows, and enjoy a relaxing picnic in one of the most beautiful places near Skardu.

Shigar Valley

A beautiful autumn sunset in Shigar Valley, Pakistan.

About one hour northeast of Skardu along the Shigar River lies the beautiful Shigar Valley. Follow the scenic road down to the beautiful village of Shigar, where you can not only witness local architectural gems like Shigar Fort or the ancient wooden Khilangrong Mosque but also traditional Balti village life.

Sarfarangah Desert

Girl lying down in the sand at Sarfarangah Cold Desert near Skardu, Pakistan.

Sarfarangah Desert is one of the two famous cold deserts around Skardu. It’s located in the Shigar Valley along the Shigar River is therefore the perfect conclusion for a visit to Shigar. Leave behind your shoes to enjoy the smooth sand and enjoy jumping into the tall dunes with a bunch of friends. But beware, there might be thorns hidden under the sand in some parts!

Katpana Desert

Significantly closer to the city lies the Katpana Desert, Skardu’s other cold desert. Surrounded by tall mountains and with a beautiful lake in the center, the Katpana Desert is especially stunning in winter when its sand is overed by a smooth blanket of snow. In addition, its proximity to Skardu Airport makes the Katpana Desert easily accessible in all seasons.

Upper Kachura Lake

A view of the Upper Kachura Lake, Skardu, in autumn.

Kachura is a settlement about one hour northwest of Skardu and famous for its two lakes: the Upper Kachura Lake and the Lower Kachura Lake. The former one is accessible through a 15-minute trek through a small forest. Popular activities at the Lower Kachura Lake include swimming , fishing , and motorboating .

(NOTE: Swimming is not recommended for ladies, unless you have a modest swimsuit with you)

Shangri-La Resort

Foreign girl sitting in a boat at Shangrila Resort, Lower Kachura Lake, Pakistan.

The Lower Kachura Lake is located within the majestic Shangrila Resort, which is hands-down one of the most beautiful places in Pakistan, if not the world. Spend a relaxing afternoon surrounded by the greenest garden in this literal Heaven on earth and make sure to enjoy some organic apple juice in front of the heart-shaped lake. And if you feel extra fancy, consider staying a night at the resort .

Bonus: Manthal Buddha Rock

Just a short drive south of Skardu lies Manthal, home to an ancient Buddhist monument known as the Manthal Buddha Rock. The rock is believed to be around 1200 years old and contains depictions of Buddha. Although I didn’t have the chance to visit Manthal myself, it’s a great addition to your Skardu itinerary if you have some time on your hands.

Intrigued by Buddhism in Pakistan? Make sure to pay a visit to Taxila!

Food In Skardu

Papu, a traditional Balti dish consisting of flat buckwheat pasta in a creamy pesto-like sauce

Balti cuisine is perhaps the most under-appreciated cuisine in all of Pakistan. Balti flavors and seasonings are very different from what you might be used to from other parts of Pakistan, featuring a lot more carby comfort foods than spices. Because it’s so hard to find Balti food in other parts of Pakistan, you should try to eat as much as possible when you’re in Skardu.

Some popular Balti dishes include:

  • Papu: flat buckwheat pasta resembling Korean tteok in a creamy pesto-like sauce
  • Mamtu: steamed wheat dumplings filled with beef, mutton, or yak meat
  • Balti lentil soup: a thick and mild lentil and vegetable stew that closely resembles German lentil soup
  • Namkeen chai: spiced milk tea with a small dash of salt creating a mindblowing taste

Safety In Skardu

Repairing a broken bus on the road to Shigar, Shigar Valley, Pakistan.

Generally speaking, Skardu is a very safe travel destination. However, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth trip.

Road Safety

As mentioned earlier, the road connecting Skardu with Gilgit is THE WORST. If you decide to travel by land, make sure to:

  • Hire a very experienced driver
  • Only use vehicles that are in good condition and avoid big buses
  • Avoid traveling in the dark and during landslide season
  • Budget A LOT of time for this drive

Usually, this is not too much of a concern in the city but avoid getting too far from your vehicle when you’re out in Deosai National Park in the unlikely event that you run into a Himalayan Brown Bear.

Health Concerns

As everywhere in Pakistan, food safety is your biggest health concern, which is why you should avoid tap water and sketchy food.

In addition, it’s a good idea to carry some altitude sickness drops with you in case the height is getting to you.

->  Check out my full Pakistan Packing List to find out what exactly you’ll need for trekking in the mountains + product recommendations!

Female Safety

Female safety is a major concern in all parts of Pakistan. To stay safe as a woman in Skardu, it’s advised to not travel alone, avoid dark areas, keep a distance from strangers, and only go with trusted guides. Unfortunately in places like Skardu, every other man calls himself a ‘tourist guide’ but not all of them have certifications and reviews. And if you happen to watch a traditional dance performance, ALWAYS decline if a performer is asking you to join their dance. (This only applies to women. For men, it’s usually no problem.)

Enjoyed your trip to Skardu? Here’s some suggestions of places to visit next:

  • K2: Skardu is the gateway to the mighty K2 peak, the second-tallest mountain in the world, and other eight-thousanders. While the summit is reserved for the world’s top mountaineers, you can do the K2 base camp trek individually or with a tour.
  • Fairy Meadows: Fairy Meadows is the beautiful mountain paradise surrounding the Nanga Parbat peak. The trek to this remote piece of heaven begins near Chilas, meaning you’ll pass the region when exiting Gilgit-Baltistan by road.
  • Hunza Valley: Hunza Valley, Pakistan’s most iconic tourist destination , is a place you mustn’t miss when traveling through Pakistan. The beautiful mountain valley is located north of Skardu on the Karakoram Highway.
  • Islamabad : If you travel to Skardu by plane, this will likely be the beginning and ending point of your journey, so it definitely wouldn’t harm to spend a day or two exploring Pakistan’s capital city .

More of Pakistan:

  • Makran Coast

Skardu is one of the best places to visit in Pakistan thanks to its unique landscape and beautiful Balti culture. The city has its own airport, making the region significantly more accessible than other places in northern Pakistan. Spend a couple of days exploring all of Skardu’s natural and cultural sites and don’t forget to try all the delicious Balti food that you can find.

Skardu  is a weather-dependent airport surrounded by high mountains. Planes only land here in good visibility, and flights to and from  Skardu  are cancelled occasionally. Skardu has daily 3-4 flights from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. The planes fly more often than not, but cancellations can and do occur, and in these circumstances, we will travel by road.

HEALTH & VACCINATION

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you need any specific vaccination or other preventive measures. You must be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the areas near Islamabad. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. In  Skardu  and the mountains, there is no malaria risk. In more remote areas, you should also have a dentist check-up. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes. Currently, no vaccine or prophylaxis is available, so the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you  take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

We highly recommend that you have adequate travel insurance for your  Skardu Tour  trip with Trango Adventure. We understand the complexity and variety of choices in the insurance market, and many of you either have your preferred insurer or already have an annual multi-trip cover. If this is the case, please ensure that your insurer is aware of your Trango Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities.

Trango Adventure  does not provide any advice on travel insurance. However, we recommend that you have travel insurance which covers the activities you are taking during Skardu.

The Sane Adventurer

A Photo-Heavy Guide On What To Do In Skardu, Pakistan

I woke up and while rubbing my eyes took a peek outside the window, giant mighty mountains covered in snow engulfed in the winter mist are looking at me eye to eye as if they have longed for me to get up and close with them. And while I am smiling, thinking about pulling that blanket off and take a long relaxing breath in the cold mountain air – I am buzzed with this deafening annoying sound of the alarm on my phone!

Good morning, Rahma – you have survived yet another day in quarantine, this is the Corona era and humans aren’t permitted to travel!

Reality sucks for sure sometimes!

No jokes, the blurb you just read is based on my real-life experience! Skardu was my last trip before the world entered this weird phase of social distancing and shizz. I flew from the Skardu Valley in Pakistan on 15 th March 2020, saying adios to the mountains, having no idea when it would be the time that I can hug the mountains again!

Good health care facilities are sparse in Northern Pakistan – Skip the stress and get yourself the best travel insurance out there!

best skardu tour itinerary

Now getting to the point – Skardu Valley is the second-most popular place to visit in Pakistan after the Hunza valley. Bordering India and being the gateway to the world’s second-highest mountain, K2, Skardu lies in the northeastern part of Pakistan, in the region of Gilgit Baltistan. In this guide, I am not only answering what to do in Skardu but I also promise that this guide will also serve to be a visual treat to your eyes because the beauty of Pakistan and Skardu for a matter of fact is just too good to be true! So let’s start your mini-tour of heaven, shall we?

General Infomation

How to get to skardu.

Skardu airport in Pakistan

There are two ways to get to Skardu – by road and by air. If coming by road, you will be driving on the Karakoram Highway, which goes straight towards China for Hunza and takes a turn to the right for Skardu.  My preferred mode is to get to Skardu by air because the road leading to the valley unlike Hunza is in extremely bad shape (as of August 2020). I would not recommend coming to Skardu by road if you are accompanied by children or elderly people. In all honestly, the ride can be a real pain in the ass!

If you have the budget to afford a plane ticket and even if you don’t have the budget, I would urge you spend some more dollars to get that plane ticket because it will the most scenic 50mins flight of your life! Flights to Skardu are three to four times a week from Islamabad, which are only operated by Pakistan International Airlines . Very recently, the airline has also announced direct flights to Skardu from Karachi. If flying from Islamabad, you will be flying over the Karakoram and the Himalayas throughout the flight. If you’re lucky, the captain might also show to Nanga Parbat and the world’s second highest mountain, K2 !

Note : The flights to Skardu are highly weather-dependent as though the Skardu airport has a long landing strip, it is built right in the heart of the mighty mountains and only skilled pilots are licensed to fly this flight. Therefore, if the weather is not clear, there is a very high chance of flight cancellation – so keep a flexible itinerary.

Best Time To Visit Skardu

As the weather up north in Pakistan gets extremely cold during the winter, the best time to visit Skardu is from April to September. Autumn starts in the valley in mid-September and lasts for a month or so. Though being extremely picturesque, it is very cold too! Cherry blossom starts in Skardu in early April and lasts for some two weeks. Some of the places in the valley, like the Deosai National Park, is only opened from a few months in summer (more on this later).

Network Connectivity

For real, do not expect great internet in the mountainous region of Gilgit Baltistan in Pakistan. Your best bet to get decent connectivity in Skardu and in Hunza too is SCOM. SCOM sim cards are only available in Gilgit and not anywhere else in Pakistan. You can get your SCOM sim card from any of the many small shops in the main town market of Skardu. In some parts of Skardu, Telenor also works reasonably well.

Eating Out In Skardu

As you cross some of the main metro cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province while moving towards Gilgit, forget about all the luxuries of international fast food outlets and restaurants. The main town market of Skardu has a handful of good small restaurants that serve burgers and pizzas. You can find quite a lot of local restaurants, but all in the main town market only. ‘ Mamto’ , which are momos or dumplings are one of the most-loved quick snacks in Skardu so do try it once. Please keep in mind that Skardu is a mountainous area, which is far from urban luxuries so do not expect any Michelin Stars restaurants in the mountains of Pakistan.

Practical information on visiting skardu valley.

Unlike Hunza Valley, if you are planning to visit Skardu do not plan a tight itinerary. The reason being is that majority of the things to do in Skardu and places to see are quite far from the main town center, which will require some 2 to 4 hours to visit. It is recommended to plan an overnight stay in any of those places to avoid the hassle of back and forth driving to the main Skardu town on the same day.

I spent some good five days in Skardu – as I visited there in March, therefore, not every place on this what to do in Skardu list was accessible at that time. So, here is my recommendation on the best things to do in Skardu, plus, the itinerary I followed.

P.S : I visited Skardu with my good friends at Coyote Trails Pakistan , which is an adventure and off-roading tourism company in Pakistan. My trip included a 4wd drive with a driver cum guide and my very good friend who runs Coyote Trails Pakistan and who certainly knew more about the place than the local guide! If you wish to plan your trip with Coyote Trails Pakistan, tell them that you are I sent you to them and they will take extra good care of you! Pinky promise J

Day 1 in Skardu:

After a dreamy and majestic flight of my dreams, I landed in Skardu on a bright sunny morning with only a couple hours of sleep. After reaching the hotel, all I could remember is crashing in the bed! After making up for my lack of sleep from the previous night, sometime around mid-afternoon I ventured out in the cutesy mountain town. With a wholesome meal, mission Skardu begins!

Shigar Fort

shigar fort in Skardu

The first stop of my trip was the Shigar Fort. Shigar Fort can be reached after a short drive of 90mins from the main Skardu Town. Shigar is a neighboring small valley in Skardu, which got popular after the 17 th century Shigar Fort was restored and converted into a museum and luxury hotel managed by Serena Hotels.

The fort was built in the 17 th century by the ruler of the Amacha Dynasty and its name translates to ‘The Fort on the Rock’. The hotel at the Shigar Fort is only operative during the high season (April-October), so when I visited there, we had a short guided tour of the museum but the hotel wasn’t welcoming any guests to stay. The entry price to the fort is 500 Pakistani Rupees ($3).

Sarfaranga Cold Desert

Sarfaranga cold desert in Skardu

As we started our day post-lunch, that’s why once we were done with exploring Shigar Fort, the sunset time was fast approaching. And what can get better than climbing a cold desert dune to watch the sunset? That’s exactly what we did! The Sarfaranga cold desert, also known as the Katpana desert is the highest desert in Pakistan located at an altitude of 7,303 feet, which also makes it one of the highest deserts in the world.

The dunes are occasionally found covered with snow during the peak winter months. The most visited parts of the Sarfaranga cold desert are near the Skardu Airport and Shigar Valley. Though it was a bit challenging climbing the silky soft sand with freezing wind blowing, nonetheless, the views from the dune top made it all well worth. You just cannot miss visiting the cold desert of Pakistan when thinking what to do in Skardu.

Day 2 in Skardu

Kharpocho fort.

Kharpocho fort in Skardu

Kharpocho Fort is situated only a few minutes’ drive from the town center. The name of the fort translates to ‘The King of Forts’. Kharpocho Fort is a 16 th -century fort. Built with rock and stones, the fort sits atop a rocky mountain that requires a short thirty minutes hike to reach the fort entrance. Mind you, though this hike is short and it doesn’t make it any simple. The terrain is uneven and quite steep, along being filled with somewhat slippery rocks.

While you’ll see the local kids running up and down the terrain without any problem, you might not be able to reach the top without losing breath! Your best bet to enjoy the strenuous hike is to be equipped with all the day hike essential gear . The fort is normally open from late morning till sunset, however, there is nothing much to see inside so you can pass that. The views from the fort entrance are not to be missed!

Manthal Buddha Rock

Manthal Buddha rock

It might come as a surprise to you that there are many relics of Buddha, which can be found in many places in the northern part of Pakistan. One of such Buddhism related relics is a giant picture of Buddha with some Sanskrit writings engraved on a giant granite rock. Named as the Manthal Rock, this place is also easily accessible from the main town center and lies only a few kilometers from away from the Kharpocho Fort. The relic on the rock is dated back to the 9 th century and has been preserved by the government, that being the reason it is in a good shape right now.

Masrur Rock

Masrur rock in skardu

Holding high resemblance with the Trolltunga rock in Norway, the Masrur rock in Skardu has been gradually gaining a lot of popularity among the tourists. Located at a place called Hussainabad near to the Skardu town center, Masrur Rock gives panoramic views of the valley and river flowing between the mountains. However, it is not easy to reach the rock. From the bottom of the mountain, you can drive some thirty minutes depending on the dirt road condition. From there, it’s a good three hours hike per side to reach the rock.

Let me mind you that this three-hour hike is what it takes for the locals to reach the rock. An average person like me would easily take five hours on one side to hike to the rock due to my limited physical abilities to hike at high altitudes. For this reason, we gave up on the long hike to Masrur Rock and enjoyed the breathtaking views of the valley from as further as we could reach. So, while planning on what to do in Skardu, do keep the time and physical endurance in mind to reach the Masrur rock. Keep a nice and sturdy backpacking and hiking camera so you don’t miss any of the scenic photo ops!

Lower & Upper Kachura Lakes

Lower Kachura lake in Skardu

A little further away from the Skardu town center are two of the topmost visited places in Skardu, the Lower and Upper Kachura Lake. The Lower Kachura Lake is a natural lake turned into a manmade lake in the shape of the heart. The lake forms the center of the famous Shangrila Hotel in Skardu, one of the most luxurious hotels in the valley. There are other small hotels around the Lower Kachura Lake as well.

Check The Latest Price For Per Night Stay At The Shangrila Resort Here

Upper Kachura Lake

To reach the Upper Kachura Lake, you can either drive to as far as your car can reach or hike from the Lower Kachura Lake. The Upper Kachura Lake is bigger and better than its lower counterpart. I found the lake to be semi-covered in ice during my visit there in March, however, if you visit during the summer months, there are plenty of water activities to do at the Upper Kachura Lake.

Day 3 in Skardu

After doing some of the best things to do in Skardu, we finally ventured out to visit the Khaplu Valley which can be reached by a little more than a two hours’ drive from the town center of Skardu. The journey to Khaplu is breathtakingly beautiful so do not commit the crime of sleeping on this journey. To enter the Khaplu Valley, there is a small check post where IDs are checked. But that’s not all! The check post is situated at an extremely scenic spot, which also happens to be the confluence point of River Indus and River Shyok.

what to do in Skardu

Can you deny these views?

what to do in Skardu

A little drive further in the valley and you will be welcomed by this very very picturesque road!

I mean, what even is this!

best skardu tour itinerary

Done with the views? Now let’s see what to do in Khaplu Valley

Khaplu Palace

The first and foremost stop for everyone coming to Khaplu is the majestic Khaplu Palace. This is a 19 th -century palace that served as the residence of the Ruler of the Khaplu valley. Only a few years back, the palace has gone through a complete renovation, and since then its doors are opened for the public. Just like the Shigar Fort, Khaplu Palace has now been converted into a luxury hotel managed by the Serena Hotels. During my visit, the palace was closed for guests as March is the non-season time in Skardu and it was set to open by April to take reservations. Nonetheless, we still got to tour the beautiful place and had it all to ourselves.

Khaplu palace in Skardu

Chaqchan Mosque

The Chaqchan Mosque is a popularly known mosque in Khaplu Valley and the oldest mosque in the region. It is a 14 th -century mosque that was built when Islam started to spread in the region. What makes it one of the favorite places of tourists visiting Khaplu are the colorful interiors of the mosque and the mixture of Tibetan and Persian architecture. Some parts of its architecture also resemble the Kashmiri architecture. The mosque has a wooden balcony with a two-story praying area.

Mosque Sofia Noorbakhsia Gharbochong

Not a very popular place to visit in Khaplu Valley, Mosque Sofia Noorbakhsia Gharbochong was perhaps the highlight of my entire trip to Skardu. There is nothing much to see in the mosque, but it is the views of the valley, for which you should 100% percent visit this place! And no, this is not your average mosque. Located at the highest point in the valley, the mosque sits alone atop a rocky mountain. Reaching it? You have to do an unusually challenging hike for an hour.

To put things into perspective…

best skardu tour itinerary

The start of the hike is pretty doable with some steps to climb. The higher you climb, the harder the hike gets. Once the steps are done, there is a short straight and even track, which doesn’t last for long. And after that, it is a true test of endurance. The track is very steep, so getting dizzy due to rapid change in altitude is normal. Towards the end of the hike, the track gets too slippery uneven rocks which eventually lead you to the viewpoint.

And let me allow the picture to do the talking of what the views were from the main viewpoint on the top.

what to do in Skardu

And here’s the Queen of the Mountains coming down from her throne! JK 🙂

Chaqchan mosque in Skardu

I almost died completing this hike as the freezing wind made it impossible to breathe and the rapid altitude change boggled my mind! But boy, this was so freaking worth it! I think I gave you the biggest reason for visiting Skardu.

After the extremely exhausting hike, a walk on a frozen river was a pure delight!

what to do in Skardu

Day 4 in Skardu

After spending one night in Khaplu, we moved further deeper into the valley to visit Hushey in the Central Karakoram National Park. Hushey is further two and a half drive away from Khaplu. The journey goes through many small mountain villages, rivers, and glaciers – highly picturesque, to say the least. As we exited Khaplu crossing a tiny suspension bridge, we entered a dried-out riverbed and spotted these two lonely babies standing in the middle of nowhere!

things to do in Skardu

This was such a precious and unique surprise by Mother Nature.

Hushey Valley – Central Karakoram National Park

things to do in Skardu

Let me start by saying that – I wasn’t prepared for Hushey! This place truly got me by surprise. Hushey Valley is home to the mighty Mashabrum Peak I, which is one of the most challenging summits in the world. Hushey is one of those places, which people often miss while planning on what to do in Skardu. Upon reaching the Hushey Valley, we were welcomed by a very humble homestay turned hotel, which lies very close to the entry point to the Central Karakoram National Park . The place was pretty much covered in snow by the time we reached there. Upon walking towards the CKNP, the snow got thicker and the views, hella better!

The park was entirely covered with snow and I and my friends had it entirely to ourselves!

places to visit in Skardu

These guys were the only company we got along the hike in the park.

places to see in Skardu

We hiked in the park for some nice couple of hours before returning to the hotel just in the nick of time as a snowstorm started right as we completed our hike!

I’d highly recommend you to stay at least one night in Hushey, which we weren’t able to do as we had to rush back to Skardu to catch a next day flight to Islamabad.

More On What To Do In Skardu

As I visited Skardu in March, when the valley was almost covered with snow, I wasn’t able to see some of the places in Skardu as they aren’t accessible in winters or they were missed due to time constraints.

Manthoka Waterfall

Arguably the largest waterfall in Pakistan, Manthoka Waterfall lies in the Kharmang Valley, 80kms from Skardu. The height of the waterfall is estimated to be at least 180 feet from the ground. It is a very famous spot for picnics, camping, and fishing in the valley. While I missed witnessing this beauty, don’t forget to add this in your things to do in Skardu list!

Deosai Plains/Deosai National Park

If you’re visiting Skardu in the summer months of June to September, the Deosai National Park should not be missed at all! Located in the Astore district, the Deosai National Park is a high altitude plateau lying at 4,114 meters above sea level, making it the second-highest plateaus in the world, which is also in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites! The park covers a vast area of almost 3000 square kilometers. It is also the only place in Pakistan to spot the Himalayan Brown Bears. During the peak summer months, the park gets completely covered with wildflowers and hues of green and yellow.

Sheosar Lake & Rama Lake

Sheosar Lake is located inside the Deosai National Park so there is no reason to miss it if visiting Deosai. Another must-visit place in Astore is the Rama Lake, however, it is not as easily accessible from Deosai as Sheosar lake. Rama Lake is located at one of the highest places in the Astore district and it requires a 2-hour hike from the drop off point in Astore valley.

Hi, I’ll be traveling to Skardu in July with my little 2.5-year toddler. Is it safe to travel to the places you mention with my toddler?

Hi there! Yes, it is very safe out there. However, if you plan to go by road, the road conditions aren’t the best.. it is pretty bumpy for a long stretch so it won’t be very comfortable for a toddler. Apart from this, there’s nothing really to worry about 🙂

I didn’t know Pakistan was home to the second highest mountain – I’ll definitely have to get here one day because the scenery looks fantastic!

The hike looks soooo fun! Cold, but totally it’s totally worth hiking in the cold for views like that! Skardu Valley is simply stunning.

Such stunning views! Skardu is totally on my bucket list and I’d love to visit there one day on my way to China. But I don’t think I’d survive it there in March because I can barely handle the cold.

I did not know you could do and see so many amazing things in Pakistan ! Thanks for the discovery!

This is my first time hearing about Skardu! It looks so beautiful and everything is just so picture-worthy! No wonder you said this is going to be a photo-heavy post! These are all a lot to take in! I’ve also never realized there could be a cold desert, I’ve always thought it’s always going to be hot with places like that!😅 Thank you for sharing your travel guide!

Fantastic post! I was planning to visit Pakistan (Islamabad) in 2020 and that got pushed back. I’ll definitely have to put Skardu Valley on the list once planning resumes. The hiking looks incredible!

So happy to know that! I am sure you will love Pakistan 🙂

I would love to visit Pakistan. It’s amazing how different the sceneries are although it’s always the same season. Definitely inspiring for taking pictures – which you, obviously, did in abundance. As I said, Pakistan is way up high on my list and once I’m able to go, I’ll definitely add Skardu to my list.

Skardu looks amazing! I feel inspired reading about your adventures here. I have so many questions, too! Like, how hard is it for women to travel around Pakistan, especially if you don’t speak the language? I’m definitely sharing this beautiful post 🙂

Thank you, Steph! Believe me, it is not that hard traveling as a solo woman in Pakistan. Locals are very helpful and hospitable. The only problem is that as the tourism infrastructure is not so great (in some parts of the country), you might face some trouble. But if you ask about safety, it is very safe, especially the northern mountainous region of Gilgit.

I am from Skardu. So, I think i should have to tell little bit more about Skardu. The Skardu’s people are too much hospitable and love to host a foreigner. So, I hope that you will find no trouble and it will be totally fun to visit Skardu alone or with unknown of the local language.

 DAYS ITINERARY

Skardu tour packages itinerary, day 1 islamabad to chilas.

On the first day of the Skardu tour, we begin our journey by road from Islamabad. The entire journey is 9 hours long via the Hazara Motorway and the total distance between the two cities is around 212 km, but we’ll have to cover around 367.5 km to reach there. Along the way, if we go over the Babusar top, then we can stop there and enjoy the scenic views. However, passing over the Babusar Top is highly dependent on the weather, as it is covered in snow during winters and the roads are closed off. In case this road is closed, we’ll have to go through Behsam which is a longer route but gets us to where we want to go.

Day 2 Chilas to Skardu

The distance between Chilas and Skardu is 256.9 km and we will take the Karakoram Highway from Chilas. It will take approximately 6 hours and 18 minutes and that may vary depending on the weather and other such factors. However, if you plan to stay a night in Chilas then that, too, is possible but keep in mind that there isn’t much to do in Chilas other than the Indus River that flows through the city. For the most part, Chilas is a dry, rocky, mountainous, and rigid area with not a lot of sights. However, it does make for a wonderful one-night stay under the stars.

Day 3 Skardu Valley

Kharpocho fort, organic village.

A unique little village in Baltistan, known as Organic Village Skardu, north of Skardu City, which is also known as Nangsoq. It is located only 3 km away from Skardu town. This beautiful little village is renowned for its pure flora and climate. Because of its purity, the organic village has a unique identity throughout Baltistan. The lifestyle and agriculture here are still old-fashioned. Here, the watermill is still in use

Shangrila Lake and Upper Kachura Lake

The twin lakes are one of the best places to visit during the Skardu tour. Shangri la also known as Lower Kachura Lake, the lake is renowned for its majestic views and supply of fishes. In addition to this, on the banks of the river, Shangrila Resort is located which was built back in 1983 on the sight of a plane crash. The hotel was named after the book titled Lost Horizon by James Hilton. While Upper Kacura late is 3km ahead of Shangri la lake.

Day 4 Kharmang valley

The beautiful valley is located along the river of Indus river. Famous places are Manthoka waterfall and Khamosh waterfall and the Indus river.

Day 5 Khaplu Valley

On this day of the Skardu tour, we will drive to khaplu valley. Khaplu, which is a beautiful landscape with high peaks, flowing blue waters, and waterfalls, is the central location in the district. The people of this tiny settlement on the bank of the Shyok River are warm and loving, as they were centuries before, when travelers first arrived here, wandering through Yarkand and Saltoro. A narrow, paved road with poplar trees lined up on both sides provides the travelers with a soothing shade as they make their way through tiny specks of sunlight filtering through the leaves, casting shadows on the darkened road, leaving an aesthete spellbound as soon as one leaves Skardu.

Day 6 Shigar Valley

Watered by the Shigar River and located in the middle of Shigar town, the valley extends from Skardu to Askole and is approximately 170 km. Despite being isolated and remote, the valley houses multiple villages. On the far edge of the valley, is Askole, which is located significantly away from the mountains. In addition to this, the valley is a stream from the Indus River, which is located in close proximity to the town. The valley is famous among adventure seekers who come here for trekking, hiking, and mountaineering, despite the fact that the conditions are quite tough. Lastly, the valley is a pathway to the Karakoram mountains, which house the highest peak in the world which is K2. Places to visit while shigar tour is Shigar Fort, Shigar Polo Ground, Hashopi Garden, and the famous Cold Desert.

Day 7 Deosai

This is the ideal destination for adventure and nature lovers during the Skardu tour. The combination of the two words 'Deo' (giant) and 'Sai' is Deosai (shadow). It is thought that this place has been haunted by giants for centuries, so the name 'The Land of the Giants' came into being. The weather here is quite unpredictable, and sometimes it begins to snow in the summer. There seems to be sunlight and clouds playing hide and seek, with the sun shining for a minute, and overcast for the next. Due to the abundance of varied wildlife here, this area remained uncrossable for ages. Icy winds, thunderstorms, and the presence of wildlife make it impossible, even at this age, to dwell here, which is why Deosai is mostly uninhabited. For centuries, nomads from Kashmir have been passing through the Deosai plains with their herds, their path of choice.Deosai has a deafening silence, a silence that spans hundreds of years. The silence is so deep that, unless a marmot's whistle fills the valley, one can hear his own heartbeat. Deosai is situated on the border between the Karakoram and the western Himalayas, and it is not less than 4000 meters above sea level at any point. For 8 months, it will be covered with snow. It hosts a variety of beautiful flowers of all shades and colors for the rest of the year, but not a single tree is found on this plateau spread over 3000 sq. Deosai is included only during the summer season. Skardu tours excluding summer season, Deosai day is excluded. It is important to note that winter, autumn, or spring tour to Skardu does not include Deosai. Because as mentioned earlier it is covered with snow during most of the year except summer season.

Day 8 Basho Valley

Basho Valley Skardu is located in Gilgit Baltistan, Roundu Divison of Skardu District. One of the favorite places to visit during the Skardu tour, Basho Valley with its extreme beauty, majestic snow-capped mountains, and primitive charm. Basho meadow is one of the splendid places to visit and camp. One of the most unique things about Basho Valley is that from the valley, you can view the world’s top two mountain ranges. In addition to this, there are many things to do here such as fishing and the wide variety of fruits that grow here such as apricot, grapes, apples, to name a few

Day 9 Back to Chilas

Today we will conclude our Skardu tour and set out towards Chilas and get on our way back to Islamabad. We’ll most likely go through the same route that we took to get to Skardu, obviously, it all depends on the weather conditions. We’ll take the Karakoram Highway to get to Chilas. And from Chilas we go over the Babusar Top and come across Lulusar Lake, which is another lake that is known for its glimmering waters, which is surrounded by mountains on all sides.

Day 10 Back to Islamabad

On the last day of the Skardu tour we leave for Islamabad from Chilas, we’ll take Karakoram highway or Naran Kaghan road to Mansehra and continue the journey on Hazara Motorway and Peshawar motorway and we’ll be back in Islamabad in approximately 8 hours.

There’s no question about it: Skardu is all about the mountains. For nearly two centuries intrepid types have flocked to this valley town on the edge of the old Silk Road to gather their gear before heading out to case the famous trails of the mighty Karakoram peaks, or to explore the verdant pastures of the Shigar Valley; enfolded in its ring of snow-tipped summits and endless fields of fruit laden groves.

Naturally, the setting makes for a wealth of natural wonders, and mountains aside, visitors here can also discover the high-perched freshwater lakes of Kachura and Sadpara, not to mention the mighty snaking meanders of the iconic Indus River. However, as any Skardu tourist guide is quick to note, the town itself is not without its attractions; boasting the fascinating Kharpocho Fort, a smattering of ancient Buddhist carvings and Chinese-cum-Tibetan-cum-Pakistani eateries, appeasing the mountain appetite with spicy tandoori curries and earthy stir fries.

5 things to add to your skardu travel itinerary.

Bert Maxwell's picture

If you’ve ever traveled in Pakistan , you’ve probably already seen or heard countless tales of the wondrous north and its scenic beauty. You’ve probably also heard specifically of Skardu, a city that has been marveled over by tourists and locals alike. Skardu isn’t only beautiful, it’s filled with history—and is a site to behold.

This is exactly why your travel adventures wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Skardu. If you’re looking to plan the trip of a lifetime, here are some helpful tips on what to see and expect in the wondrous city of Skardu, Pakistan.

5 things to add to your Skardu travel itinerary

1. Visit the Deosai Plains

Known for being the second largest plateau in the world, the Deosai plain is a renowned high-altitude plain and national park found in Skardu. The name Deosai is derived from a phrase translating to “Shadow of the Giant” which, in turn, is a phrase derived from a famous folk tale from that region.

The plain and national park is known for its majestic greenery and unexpected weather patterns. Another fantastic feature of this region is the deafening silence that the land is surrounded by, which many visitors have described as eerie and strangely calming. And, of course, let's not forget the famous Sheosar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, boasting deep blue water that sparkles as the sun shines upon it.

When you plan a trip to Skardu, make sure to add Deosai to your itinerary.

2. Book a stay at the Shigar Fort

Shigar Fort, also known as the “Palace of the Rock,” was built by the Amacha Dynasty in the 17th century. It was founded on top of an area surrounding a cone-shaped rock, which inspired the very name it goes by now. This fort is a collection of three separate buildings standing adjacent to each other, with each building having been built in a different time with a different structure.

This fort is known for its magnificent architecture, breathtaking interior, and famed Amacha Garden, complete with scenic greenery and a Mughal-style central platform. Today, this fort serves as a famous hotel under the name Serena Shigar. If you’re looking for the ideal place to stay while also taking in the historic beauty of Skardu, this is the place to visit.

5 things to add to your Skardu travel itinerary

3. Try out Balti cuisine

If you’re visiting Skardu, one of the best experiences you can have there is trying out the famous Balti cuisine. Packed with unique flavor and warm and hearty ingredients, this cuisine will fill you up and keep you warm on those cold Skardu nights.

Some of the most famous dishes you can try are Balay (noodle soup with meat broth), Prapu  (wheat noodles with walnut paste), and Marzan (buckwheat with apricot oil). Wash it all down with a warm, comforting cup of rich butter tea.

4. Have a snack by the Manthokha Waterfall

If you’re craving a warm cup of tea or some filling street food, there’s no better place for it than the Manthokha Waterfall. This waterfall is a mesh of gurgling streams flowing into deep blue waters surrounded by lush greenery, and is a primary attraction for many people who visit the area.

The waterfall is also surrounded by a range of cafes and kiosks that will serve you a wide range of traditional snacks and delicious tea so you can enjoy the view with a quick bite to eat.

5. Go to the Cold Desert

Known traditionally as the Katpana desert by locals, this magnificent sandy region is surrounded by high sand dunes and snowy white sand granules. The desert is surprisingly cold, so come prepared with thermal gear. The desert is spread across a huge area, being mainly located in the Shigar region but stretching out to the Khaplu and Shikar areas, too. With its calm atmosphere and almost snowy white sand plains, this is one of the most scenic deserts you can visit in the world.

Invite others to be a part of your trip

Once you’ve planned out your trip to Skardu, you might not want to keep it to yourself. Maybe you’re a travel agent looking to host trips for a living, or maybe you just want to get a group together to make it a fun experience for everyone.

Either way, you can easily invite people to be a part of your Skardu trip by creating your own personalized travel posters and sending them out to your friends and family. Use online tools like PosterMyWall to get free access to a wide range of travel poster templates and create a special poster containing all the details of your upcoming Skardu trip, so people know how to join and what to expect.

Pakistan with Skardu & Lahore

If I had to name my favorite country in the world, that would be Pakistan.

Home to staggering and unspoiled landscapes, Pakistan is the only country where you find the three highest mountain ranges in the world, the Himalayas, the Karakoram and the Hindu Kush.

In this tour, we will explore the most gorgeous valleys, including the epic region of Hunza, as well as the barely-visited region of Skardu.

Nevertheless, Pakistan is also known for its beautiful, welcoming, and charming people, some of the most hospitable people I have ever met during my travels, so this tour will also have a strong focus on learning about the local community.

The tour will take place the best month for visiting Pakistan , in September, after the high season is over, and when the weather is lovely.

Important: this expedition starts in Islamabad and finishes in Lahore.

September 17th to 30th, 2024

Lead by Joan Torres

Day 10 – Kachura Lakes

Day 11 – Skardu market and Katpana desert

Day 12 – Flight from Skardu to Islamabad

Day 13 – Full day in Lahore

Day 14 – Departure

Day 1 is the arrival day in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.

We will spend the day picking you up from the airport and checking in at the hotel.

We will visit Faisal Mosque and then, in the evening, we will invite you for a welcome dinner at Monal Restaurant, one of the most popular restaurants in town, serving high-quality Pakistani food.

Day 2 – Driving to Chilas through the Karakoram Highway

The drive between Islamabad and Gilgit Baltistan is a 600-kilometer ride over an entangled road, not feasible to do it in one day, so we will stop and spend the night in Chilas, a small town along the Karakoram , where we will get our first glimpse of the local life in this part of Pakistan.

The drive is very scenic, and adventurous, with plenty of worldwide famous Pakistani trucks.

The whole journey from Islamabad to Chilas takes around 12 hours, with breaks, unexpected events and checkpoints included.

Why not fly into Gilgit instead?

Because flights get canceled too often and we can’t risk that. We understand that it’s a long drive but if we took a domestic flight instead to cut one day short, and the flight got canceled, we’d run into a big problem.

We will continue our journey through the Karakoram Highway towards Passu.

Located in the heart of Hunza, Passu is a picturesque village located in a jaw-dropping area of Gilgit-Baltistan, surrounded by absolutely outstanding mountains and perhaps, the most welcoming village in the country.

Overnight in Passu.

We will spend the day exploring Gulmit and its surroundings, focusing on the local culture, including visiting a women-run carpet workshop and having lunch in a local house.

Then, we will hike to Borith Lake and after lunch, we will trek to Ondra Polygah for the best views of the valley.

Overnight in Gulmit.

Day 5 – Passu bridge trek

Day 5 is among traveler’s favorites.

Early in the morning, we will head for Hussaini Bridge, a vertiginous, suspension bridge, from where we will trek to the village of Passu, over an even more jaw-dropping bridge.

Overnight in Karimabad.

Day 6 – Explore Karimabad

Karimabad is the largest settlement in Hunza, a proper town with comfortable accommodations and facilities.

After several days in the mountains, Karimabad feels like a big city but it’s more like a small town home to some pretty cool forts and amazing scenery, besides a pretty lively local market.

We will visit all of that.

Day 7 – Drive to Skardu

A 7-hour drive into the region of Skardu through one of the most scenic roads in Pakistan .

We will take our time, stopping in the best viewpoints and places.

Overnight in Shigar.

Day 8 – Explore Shigar

Shigar is a village and the main gateway to the highest mountains in the Karakoram range, including the famous K2.

Shigar is also located in a majestic valley filled with mesmerizing fortresses, surrounded by breathtaking mountains.

In the afternoon, we’ll also visit Sarfaranga desert, a cold desert with actual sand dunes located at 2300 meters above sea level.

Day 9 – Deosai Plains

Located at 4000 meters above sea level, Deosai Plains is a plateau located within Deosai National Park, a set of gorgeous meadows where we will spend half a day walking around.

The drive there is long, around 3 hours, but it’s certainly worth the drive.

Overnight in Skardu.

Day 10 & 11 – Explore Skardu

We will spend day 10 & 11 exploring the valleys and highlights around Skardu, including Kachura lakes, Katpana desert, and even hiking to Hussaini rock, a 6-hour hike.

Day 12 – Flight from Skardu to Islamabad

Flights from the Northern Areas get canceled pretty often so that’s why we’ll fly two days before departure, to have day 13 as a backup, in the hypothetical case it does get canceled.

If the flight doesn’t get canceled, upon arrival in Islamabad, we’ll drive straight to Lahore, a 4-hour drive.

Overnight in Lahore.

Day 13 – Lahore city tour

Lahore is the cultural capital of Pakistan, and where you find the best local food, the most stunning mosques, and the liveliest bazaar in all the country, and unmissable city.

In the evening, we will also head for the Pakistan/Indian border to attend at the daily border ceremony.

After breakfast, we will take care of your transfer to Lahore airport.

Which hotels do we stay?

These are the hotels we always stay in – subject to availability .

All are relatively comfortable hotels and lodges with private rooms and attached toilets, usually the best available option in the region we visit.

  • Islamabad: Grand Hotel Islamabad
  • Chilas: Shangrila Hotel Chilas
  • Passu: Sarai Silk Route
  • Shigar: Space Hotel
  • Skardu: Himalaya Hotel
  • Karimabad: Mountain Story Aliabad

How does the room distribution work?

Price of the tour includes accommodation in a twin room.

If you are a solo traveler, you will be sharing the room with another like-minded traveler from the group. We always try to group people of the same gender and age together but note that this won’t always be the case.

If you want to have your own single room, price of the single supplement is an additional €350.

How to get a visa?

Today, you can easily apply for a Pakistan tourist visa online, it’s very simple.

As an average, it takes no more than 1 week to get the visa approval.

Tips and instructions will be shared upon booking a spot.

Which nationalities can join this tour?

Pretty much all nationalities.

Do I need to be fit for this tour?

We will do some hikes but nothing particularly challenging, and all will be day hikes, no camping, and stuff like that.

This means that all hikes are optional and that you can always hang out in the respective villages, where you will be surrounded by mountains anyway.

How good is the infrastructure in Pakistan?

As mentioned, in the mountain areas, we always stay in the best available accommodation.

However, note those areas of Pakistan are so remote that even the best possible accommodation can be an issue for some, since electricity and running water might not always be reliable.

Moreover, we always try to eat in the cleanest places but note that hygiene standards in Pakistan are poor and that some travelers might get sick due to the food they eat outside of the hotels.

Nevertheless, if you are keen to have the most epic adventure and are flexible when it comes to tourist facilities, you are welcome to join this tour!

What’s the best way to reach Islamabad?

Islamabad has an international airport, with some common connections being Dubai, Doha, Istanbul or Jeddah.

Is it safe?

Nowadays, Pakistan is safe, especially in the Northern Areas.

How many people will attend this tour?

We limit our tours to a maximum of 12-14 people.

Are there ATMs in Pakistan?

You can find ATMs in Islamabad, but better to bring cash for the Northern Areas.

Exchanging money: which currencies do they accept?

Both € and $ can be easily exchanged for Pakistani rupees.

How does payment work?

In order to secure your spot on the tour, we require a   security deposit, and the remaining amount can be sent no later than 45 days before the departure date.

Further details will be shared upon booking your spot.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, if you want to join any of our expeditions, you must purchase travel insurance, this is non-negotiable, and it must be with IATI .

Why do we have to book it with IATI?

Against the Compass has been a partner with IATI for a very long time. We know their CEO, the marketing team and we do a lot of collaborations together so in the unlikely case something happened, we’d know what to do.

Moreover, IATI Insurance covers all the countries where the FCDO advises against all travel.

You may also benefit from a 5% discount if purchasing it from the below link.

About Skardu Valley

In the extreme north of Pakistan, Skardu the central valley of Gilgit-Baltistan is the epitome of beauty, serenity, and wilderness. Paths to some of the world’s highest mountains including K2, K3, and Gasherbrum; all are connected through this valley. These towering mountains attract thousands of climbers from all over the world each year; some have even lost their lives in efforts to summit these steep climbs.

About Deosai Plains

Deosai is the combination of two words ‘Deo’ (giant) and ‘Sai’ (shadow). For centuries, it is believed that this place is haunted by giants, thus the name ‘The Land of the Giants’ came into being. The weather is quite unpredictable here, sometimes it starts snowing in summer. Sunlight and clouds seem to play hide and seek here, with the sun shining one minute, and overcast in next. The Deosai National Park is renowned for its vast plains covered with lush wild grass, beautiful flowers, and numerous lakes. Sheosar Lake makes for an ideal picnic spot and local authorities offer camping facilities for tourists to spend a night under the stars next to the pristine waters. There is an abundance of wildlife such as brown bears, snow leopards, red foxes, the Himalayan ibex, golden eagles, vultures, and falcons.

I am traveling to North after a few years and with young kids so I have a few questions.

1- Based on current road conditions, how long will it take from Besham to Chilas and Chilas to Karimabad?

2- Can we do Astore - Bara Pani - Skardu on a Corolla or BRV and without 4x4 or is 4x4 necessary?

4- What is the road condition between Gilgit and Skardu. It used to take 9 hours. Is it still the same?

' class=

Greetings from Chitral,

Besham to Chilas, 7/8 hrs.

For Deosai plains, I'd suggest you a 4x4, even a BRV would be okay but not a Corrola.

According to updates a very good, carpeted road has been built to Naltar valley so you could take your car , if not, you can rent a Prado from Jutal or the parking near Nomal.

5 hrs nowadays, some points would be bad but overall it's fine.

Forget last-minute: here’s when to book cruises for the best deals.

Cruise ships are proving a popular vacation choice in 2024, resulting in fewer last-minute deals.

When it comes to booking a cruise, conventional travel wisdom often points travelers towards last-minute deals as the golden ticket for savings. While this tactic may have worked well in the past, the landscape of cruising today has changed.

With the increased demand and popularity of cruises in recent years, relying solely on last-minute bargains could leave you either paying a lot more than usual, or missing out on a trip altogether.

Changing Dynamics Of Cruise Bookings

In 2024, the cruise industry is witnessing an unprecedented surge in popularity . This revival is partly fueled by enhanced cruise experiences, new destinations, and larger, more resort-style ships.

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), 35.7 million passengers are expected to cruise in 2024. That’s 13% more than last year, and 6% higher than the last pre-pandemic cruise year in 2019.

Such high demand means that waiting for last-minute deals is less likely to result in significant savings. Instead, cruise enthusiasts are discovering that the best booking strategies involve timing that might not be as intuitive.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, cruise itinerary launch deals.

The day a cruise line releases its itineraries (often as much as two years in advance) is now seen as the prime time to secure a good deal.

Most major lines have recently opened their bookings for the 2026 season. Early reservations not only ensure wider cabin availability but often come with perks such as reduced deposits, potential cabin upgrades, and onboard credit incentives.

More importantly, early prices tend to be lower, and securing your booking early gives you leverage to monitor price changes and possibly even rebook or claim a refund if prices drop, if your terms and conditions allow.

However, such early deals are often snapped up by cruise lines’ frequent cruiser program members. At the very least, make sure you’re signed up to the email newsletters of relevant cruise lines to be sure you’re notified of the earliest deals.

Three Months Before Departure

Another strategic booking window opens approximately 90 days before departure. This is when final payments are due, and a small percentage of travelers, uncertain about their plans or having experienced a change in their financial circumstances, opt to cancel their bookings.

As a result, cruise lines re-release these cabins, sometimes at reduced rates to fill the ship. This period is particularly advantageous for those with flexible travel plans and can be a sweet spot for securing a great deal.

The Importance Of Travel Agents

The internet changed the game for booking flights and hotels, but in many cases using a travel agent to book a cruise is often better than booking independently.

Travel agents often have access to unique deals and cruise lines may offer unsold inventory through them at a discount in order to protect the prices in their own sales channels.

Even if not, travel agents will likely be amongst the first to hear about unsold cabins and upcoming sales.

Partnering with a travel agent and making sure they know the kind of deals to look out for will save significant amounts of time, and potentially money.

You won't be alone. The latest CLIA industry report states that 73% of cruisers say that “travel advisors have a meaningful influence” on their decisions.

How To Bag A Last-Minute Cruise Deal

Last-minute bookings can still offer savings, especially for itineraries out of high season. But such a tactic comes with downsides.

First and foremost, your options will be limited, and not just in terms of itineraries. If you find availability at a good price, you’re unlikely to find much choice in staterooms, potentially forcing you to settle for accommodation in a non-optimal position on the ship, such as at the very front of the ship where movement is greater, or below a nightclub, galley, or other crew area.

If you don't live close to the port of departure, you’re likely to face high air fares, potentially wiping out any saving offered by booking a last-minute deal on the cruise.

Finally, don’t overlook the stress caused by the uncertainty. Scrambling to book last-minute travel arrangements can add unnecessary stress to what should be relaxing vacation preparation.

Fast Travel: The Best Itinerary For Spending 48 Hours in Las Vegas

  • By Sage Anderson

Sage Anderson

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Las Vegas is a city that’s almost overwhelmingly energetic, and when you’re on a tight schedule, you’re going to want to maximize your fun potential. Will you grab a ticket to one of dozens of electric residencies like Carrie Underwood ? Or are you going to try and score a reservation to a fine dining eatery like Aqua for some seafood from a Michelin-starred chef ? It can be difficult to know just where to start your adventure when there’s so much to do and it can feel like the strip was practically built on FOMO.

Whether you’re trying to pack in a quick weekend trip, or making the most out of an extended layover, we suggest starting off by picking a resort to anchor your 48-hour Vegas experience around. What happens in Vegas doesn’t need to stay in Vegas, but you certainly need a place to — and we think the most luxurious weekend starts and ends at Resorts World Las Vegas .

With high-end accommodations, world-class dining options, and stellar entertainment options, this is a sign to book that trip you’ve been meaning to take. As Vegas veterans ourselves, we’ve curated an itinerary below chock-full of the best ways to make the most of your stay in Vegas .

Knowing which spots are worth booking can be as confusing as your first time playing poker. The good news: if you’re searching for a destination that gives you access to eating a mouth-watering meal, dancing the night away, and then making it back to your room in one piece afterwards, Resorts World Las Vegas checks all the boxes.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Time to start your day off right with the most important meal of the day — and trust us when we say you’re going to want a breakfast that will fuel you through every step of the Strip. Chef Ray Garcia’s ¡VIVA! hosts an excellent brunch every Saturday and Sunday that features elevated Mexican brunch favorites, in addition to boozy and bottomless beverages (we wouldn’t recommend this first thing since you’re going to have a packed day, but their Fresa Sandia is quite good if that’s the way your day is going). Get the Chorizo Con Huevos or the Chilaquiles with fresh, crispy heirloom corn tortilla chips and thank us later.

Mid-Morning

Take a stroll through the The District shopping esplanade where you’ll find 70,000 square feet of shopping in case that compact carry-on of yours couldn’t fit another clubbing shirt. The most eye-catching part of the area though is the 50-foot, LED-panel-covered Globe (affectionately called “The Orb” on our last trip) that’s definitely worth checking out. The Globe offers an immersive art experience, and you can catch a short show with synced lights and music every hour on the hour from noon to 1 a.m.

Alcaraz vs. Sinner Livestream: How to Watch the French Open Semifinal Tennis Match Online Free

Celtics vs. mavericks livestream: how to watch the nba finals without cable, here's where to get a discounted sony playstation 5, mid-afternoon.

If you’re ready to fist-pump to a hot DJ set, but you also want to be in bed at a reasonable hour, slip into a swimsuit and head over to Ayu Dayclub . Resorts World’s Bali-inspired poolside party turns the weekend into a never-ending summer, with white daybeds and chic wooden cabanas you can rent if you’re not ready to pack into the pool with everyone else. Even if you’re just sipping a drink on dry land, it’s a certified vibe, and you might even get to see one of the repeat artists like Kaskade or T-Pain step up to the DJ booth.

That being said, if a “dayclub” isn’t your scene, we still suggest beating that Vegas heat and cooling off at one of the seven pools on property (including the only infinity pool on the Strip).

Early Evening

After a relaxing poolside afternoon soaking up some sun, go back to Famous Foods Street Eats and make your way to Ms. Meow’s Mamak Stall for a secret surprise. Amidst the small shop selling Asian snacks and adorned with lucky cats, ask the person behind the register at Ms. Meow’s to push the shelf-lined wall, and you can slip into the entrance of an intimate speakeasy, Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den. Open daily at 4 p.m., this relaxed and cozy spot seats 34 and serves up tropical cocktails into the wee hours. Sip on the “Hanami,” a sake drink with hints of sakura for a pre-dinner cocktail and take picks by the neon tiger on the exposed brick. But be sure to come here early after opening — this buzzy bar isn’t so much of a secret anymore, and fills up fast.

Now that you’ve had a drink (or two) and are ready for a night out, start with dinner at Wally’s , a beloved transplant from Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The mouthwatering charcuterie boards are a can’t-miss, filled with peppery wagyu beef salami and L’Amuse Gouda, although the baguette stuffed with brie and a staggering amount of truffles (in the honey, butter, and shaved variety) is also a great choice. And with a selection of more 100 wines by the glass, pull up a chair, sip on a rare pour, and get ready for some of the best elevated comfort food on the Strip.

Late Evening

With so many bars, lounges, and concerts at Resorts World, you’ve already got a wide range of options for wherever you want the night to take you. Resorts World Theatre might be able to accommodate 5,000, but seeing a show there will feel more like you’re at an intimate club. It even boasts an immersive sound system designed by L-Acoustics. In other words, it sounds really freaking good, no matter where you’re sitting. See the biggest names in comedy like Kevin Hart, or get a front-row seat to Carrie Underwood — one of the year’s most-anticipated shows to see in Vegas. The Grammy winner’s Reflection residency kicked off November 2023, and just added more dates through 2024, so you don’t want to miss it.

Since it’s technically your last day in Vegas, you’re going to want to hit the ground running with some quick bites to keep that Vegas train rolling. Sun’s Out Buns Out single-handedly saved us during our last Vegas trip thanks to both a post-Zouk, late-night Furikake Fries, and a Bacon, Egg & Cheese the morning after. If you couldn’t already tell, there’s one key ingredient here: eggs. Sun’s Out Buns Out serves up egg dishes all day, every day, so grab a fast breakfast here to start your day sunny-side up.

In case you want to sleep in and skip breakfast to maximize your night owl potential, or are still hungry after breakfast, we love Fuhu’s high-energy dining room . It’s more than just a pregaming spot (although it’s a pretty great pregaming spot), it also has a stellar brunch with an Asian flair and hand-crafted signature drinks. Since it’s from Zouk Group, you can listen to DJs and special acts while you munch on scoops of king crab and truffle fried rice (there’s a lot of truffle in this town). The vibe is dark, stylish, and sexy, overall a highly Instagrammable spot.

Let’s slow things down for a little bit and take a break from the bustle of Vegas at the ultra-luxurious Awana Spa . Resorts World’s haven takes a more energetic approach to the spa experience, and socializing is encouraged here, where the Foot Spa Lounge is outfitted with TVs so you can catch any number of games while you ease your tired feet. Head over to the Fountain of Youth, which features six vitality pools, warming tepidarium chairs, steam rooms, cool mist showers and more — all while transportational videos play on a wraparound LED screen that shows you a calming film of the tops of snowy peaks or rushing waterfalls.

For a pre-dinner libation, take an elevator ride to the top of Resorts World to the Allē Lounge on 66 , a dimly lit, inviting spot with wood floors and plush velvet armchairs. The 66th-floor lounge is an elegant spot to sip craft cocktails like a Genting Old Fashioned (Highland Park 12 Year, Demerara Syrup, Angostura Aromatic Bitters, and Regan’s Orange Bitters). But the main attraction here is the breathtaking view of the Strip from its floor-to-ceiling windows, especially when it’s lit up at night. There’s even a telescope so you can grab a closer peek.

Phish Fan Banned From Sphere for Taking Bong Rip: ‘No Regrets’

'house of the dragon' season 2 repeats same thrills — and mistakes — as season 1, bad boy for life: sean combs’ history of violence, whoopi goldberg reunites 'sister act 2' choir to perform 'oh happy day' for 30th anniversary.

It’s been a long (almost) 48 hours, but you should go out with a bang with a night out at the scene-y Zouk Nightclub. When the sun goes down, the vibes come to life, with high-tech lighting displays (seeing the laser light fixture descend down from the ceiling was the highlight of our last trip) and room-shaking sound. Your favorite DJs have probably performed there, and on any given night you could catch a set from Odesza, Deadmau5, DJ Snake, and more. Afterwards, you can crash back at your Conrad suit and reflect on your successful 48 hours in Las Vegas.
