When In Manila Search

Binondo chinatown fun food tour – the big binondo food wok.

Put aside three hours of non-stop culinary decadence as we eat our way around the most intimate alleys of Binondo! We’ll horse around the streets taking in Tsinoy history, chomping down eats and gorging on Chinatown’s specialty treats! Definitely a wok for your stomach and your soul. ~Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks

When In Manila and have nothing to do? How about an interesting  food-slash-educational field trip? Join Old Manila Walks ‘ Big Binondo Food Wok !

I’ve always seen Binondo as a treasure trove of foodie finds, if one knows where to look. And I know I was up for something good when we joined Old Manila Walks’ Big Binondo Food Wok with Sir Ivan Man Dy (yes, he was the one who showed the well-known Anthony Bourdain around Chinatown).  I was expecting that the Big Binondo Food Wok is just about food, food and well, more food. But it was more than that – we were served with history, culture, met a few new friends, mastered the art of crossing streets and avoiding cars and a whole lot of fun.

DSC 0340

A little lesson on Chinatown’s history. No worries,  a background on history is not required on joining the tour.

Sir Ivan’s quick history refresher all throughout the tour is served in a non-boring way. I assure you, learning history through Ivan is a lot of fun. Join the tour and you’ll know what I mean.

I personally loved how Sir Ivan sees Binondo as his own ‘ personal museum ‘ and playground hence the birth of his walking tours to share it with others.

First food stop coming up!!

More facts and history from Ivan while waiting for our food.

Our first treat — Kiampong and Meatball Soup . Goes perfectly well together. Salty kiampong rice is complimented by the soup.

We had it in a very interesting place which is also known as the Volunteer Fireman’s Coffee Shop .

DSC 1094 1

Threading around Binondo is not for the faint-hearted but it can assure a thrill with its sights and sounds. This is where one’s mastery of street-crossing and avoiding cars will be tested, being alert is highly recommended.

Next stop — The Fried Siopao Delight!

DSC 0940 1

Here’s the very comic Ivan explaining the ABCs of Siopao, wherein the last one is a shock but purely a joke.

DSC 0956 1

Tadaaaa!!! Fried Siopao and all the goodness inside. I’ve been a fan of this since then and was truly happy that it was part of the tour.

DSC 0967 1

More walking and crossing on the streets of Binondo.

DSC 0968 1

Binondo’s well-known Ongpin Street.

DSC 0976 1

We stopped by a Filipino-Chinese public shrine and everyone’s welcome here. You can send a little prayer or light an incense to accompany your prayers.

DSC 0971 1

Sir Ivan explaining how a  zhi jiao works. A zhi jiao is a crescent-shaped wood block that comes in a pair and  used to communicate with a gods, especially when troubled and in need of immediate advice. So maybe next time when you’re in Binondo, drop by and try the zhi jiao to find out an answer to your questions.

After a short break from eating, we’re on to our next stop — Dumplings!

DSC 1001 1

I’ve been wanting to visit this place for quite some time already and so I was surprised when we finally got there. I’ve heard they have very good dumplings and cheap too! And what’s more, you can actually watch how the dumplings are made.

DSC 1020 1

Steamed Dumplings . Ivan told us how can we identify our dumplings based on their color. I’m betting this one is of kuchay .

DSC 1014 1

Fried Dumplings that goes well with their spicy dip. We were so full after our dumplings degustation.

I will go back to Binondo for these dumplings!

Time for more walking to burn down the food we ate and make room for the next one!

DSC 1038 1

We passed by a store selling various Chinese items. Someone in our group got really fascinated with the symbolic ‘ paper money ‘ and ended up buying a bunch of it. Ivan gave us a little background on what they were for and what the symbols on them meant.

DSC 1034 1

Paper Money that are burned to send respect to the gods.

Next food stop, Hopia Overload!

DSC 1040 1

Who would’ve thought that this much variety of hopia exists? Wintermelon (kondol) hopia? Sounds interesting.

DSC 1043 1

Let the hopia tasting begin!

Since we were only a small group, it means more hopia to share among us. I believe we tasted around 4-5 kinds of hopia. I never had that much hopia in my life. Haha! Hopia overload indeed!

DSC 1046 1

Too much hopia in one day. But I’m not complaining.

DSC 1053 1

Just across the hopia place, Sir Ivan led us into a store where we had short ‘preserved goods tasting’. Kiamoy, champoy, nuts, cherries – it was an overwhelming variety. But all I can remember was how the champoy tasted — sweet and salty at first, then it will hit you with its strong sour taste that will surely kick your spirits. Mine surely was awakened by the champoy!

DSC 1056 1

Passing by alleys and streets to our next food destination. Binondo’s nooks and crannies never fails to fascinate me.

The last but not the least food stop we had served us fresh lumpia and pancit to cap our Big Binondo Food Wok Tour.

DSC 1071 1

It was not the usual fresh lumpia that I grew up with. But this one’s indeed interesting, and good too! Sir Ivan showed us how to enjoy it best with the sauces and toppings.

pancit

Pancit for long life and for the very fun food tour we had!

And that capped our little adventure in Binondo – a fun morning filled with food, friends and history. The Big Binondo Food Wok is more than a tour, it’s an experience worth every cent.

DSC 1080

Ivan with the group also known as new found friends! 🙂

DSC 1086

It was truly a unique experience with Sir Ivan Man Dy. I’ve frequented Binondo before but the tour gave it a new face. And I can’t wait to be back and armed with my Big Binondo Food Wok map!

So When In Manila , have a little dose of history while munching your way around Binondo. Join Old Manila Walks’ Big Binondo Food Wok tour! It’s a deliciously satisfying experience!

Chinatown food tour: Exploring Binondo’s gastronomic delights with Old Manila Walks

Photo of Kimi Lim & Amy Tran

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — When one goes to Binondo, one often goes to eat. But when taking my friend who had come from Australia, I didn’t want to just take her to one place that had my favorites. I wanted to take her everywhere and get a taste of everything. After watching the Manila episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, we found that his guide, Ivan Man Dy, was doing tours of Manila under the name Old Manila Walks . We opted for The Big Binondo Food Wok, a leisurely food tour of Binondo’s eating establishments while exploring the area’s history.

The Binondo food trip begins

The Binondo food tour began at 9:30 a.m. at the entrance of the Binondo Church. The banner that hung across the street was advertising for Holy Mass and Ancestor Veneration in the same line, a mix of Catholic and Confucian culture that set the tone for the rest of the day.

Outside the statue of Roman Ongpin, we had a brief geography lesson. Binondo was considered Extramuros, “outside the wall,” where those unfortunate enough not to be Spanish lived. Often, when this area is discussed in history books, much focus is put on Intramuros, the enclave where the Spanish ruled. But outside the walls, there was also a rich history of those who were native to the island and those who came from elsewhere. Our journey into Filipino heritage food began at Polland with our first meal, lumpia.

Our next stop on the Manila Chinatown food tour involved uneven pavements and a brief stroll through the wet market on Carvajal Street, where vendors were plying special Lunar New Year items. Ivan explained that these “lucky items” with red ribbons that were given at this time of year were either based on wordplay or the properties of the food itself. Oranges sound like gold or luck, depending on your dialect, and their bright colors resemble coins. Pineapple sounds similar to the phrase “beckoning luck.” I had seen these fruits used as decoration during this time of year but was unaware of the origin of their symbolism.

binondo food wok tour

The third stop on our food tour that’s also worth visiting when doing a Binondo photowalk was Quik Snack (Carvajal St, Binondo), a local haunt founded in 1967. In a time when women were expected to be caretakers of the home, Ahma Pilar opened a restaurant at the age of sixty and ran it till her death. The dishes were inventive and fresh, with our heaviest meal of the day consisting of Kutchay-Ah, an empanada-styled handpie filled with chives, meat, and radish; egg noodles with beef and kangkong in a satay soup, and tokwa , fried tofu in a sweet soy sauce with chili and fresh beansprouts.

At this time, I was reminded that there were four stops on this tour and that there was still one more stop, but the staff at Quik Snack brought a special dessert for us on the house to celebrate the new year —sweet sticky rice with coconut. I didn’t know whether I could take a bite of anything from our last stop, where we were having dessert.

The final bite of the Binondo food adventure

We looped back to near the church and ended up in the flagship store of the famed deli Eng Bee Tin (628 Ongpin Street, Binondo). Our Chinatown food tour ended with hopia, a food that perfectly symbolized Chinese-Filipino sensibilities. Chinese pastry preparation with Filipino ingredients, as the puff pastry would be filled with the local bean munggo instead of the more common red beans in Chinese cuisine. A sweet burst of flavor ended the tour, and Ivan invited us to go shopping should anything in the store take our fancy. There was barely any room to browse as I navigated between people purchasing comically large amounts of tikoy, fortune cookies, and hope to give to relatives, workmates, and friends.

It was at this point our tour concluded, and I thanked Ivan for his time and his knowledge. I came to this tour expecting samplers and came out with a full stomach, having tried full platters of things I normally would not have tried for myself. This experience was certainly off the beaten track and illuminated parts of local history I was unaware of, leaving me with new knowledge and a new appreciation for Chinese-Filipino food.

Tours, requiring prior reservation, can be booked through the official site . The Big Binondo Food Wok is priced at PHP 1,850 per head (PHP 2,000 on weekends and holidays), covering meals. Their adherence to the DOT health and safety guidelines ensures a secure and enjoyable culinary experience for all participants.

  • Old Manila Walk’s food-filled tour of the world’s oldest Chinatown is back this July

binondo food wok tour

Binondo continues to fascinate Filipinos today with its vibrant Chinese culture. Part of its charm is its wide array of restaurants and kiosks that serve traditional and modern Chinese food.

It is no wonder that all year round—not just Chinese New Year!—many flock to Manila’s Chinatown to get a taste of what it has to offer.

binondo food wok tour

Equally fascinating though is its history. Established in 1594 by the Spaniards to house Chinese migrants who converted to Catholicism, it is considered the world’s oldest Chinatown.

Both facets of Binondo (food and history) are the subjects of Old Manila Walks’ “The Big Binondo Food Wok” that resumes this month. Starting this week until August, you can book a tour that lasts about two-and-a-half hours, covering Binondo Church, Ongpin St., Carvajal Alley Market, and the restaurants and shops that pepper its streets.

The tour is conducted at a leisurely pace, too, so everyone, including older audiences, can enjoy it. The fee includes food as well as a tasting menu of meats, nuts, dairy, and seafood. Vegetarian options can also be arranged.

Heritage advocate Ivan Man Dy leads Old Manila Walks’ tours , which also cover Intramuros, Malacañang, and the Chinese Cemetery. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he was famously Anthony Bourdain’s guide during the latter’s visit to Manila for his documentary travel show “No Reservations.”

Old Manila Walks has been conducting heritage walking tours of Manila sites since 2005.

M ANILA, Philippines — You can never consider yourself a real foodie until you have scoured through Binondo. This district in Manila is regarded as the oldest Chinatown in the world, dating back to the early 1590s. Although it was established during the Spanish period, it had been an active place of commerce for Chinese traders even before that. Today, this part of Manila is famous for the Binondo Food Crawl, which everyone enjoys doing with their friends and loved ones.

Binondo Food Tripping (part 2): Food Wok Tour with Ivan Man Dy

posted by: Gypsygal Prime

Note to self: I should really spend more time in the gym.

I was thinking about this, out of guilt, or maybe out of vanity, as I munched on a spring roll (which, I have to remind all you foodies there, really goes well with a dollop of that sweet brown syrup and some hot sauce).

Shopping at Carvajal St

That was perhaps my fifth or sixth mini-meal in the four-hour Binondo Food Wok tour with Ivan Man Dy. Yup I spent one Saturday afternoon participating in this very popular food tour led by self-described street walker -and Anthony Bourdain’s guide to Manila.

I admit that I joined this tour out of curiosity. I’ve long been a denizen of Manila and have frequently dined and shopped with family and colleagues here as the famed Chinatown district is near my house and my office.

Street walker Ivan Man Dy takes us on a tour of Binondo

And that’s the problem with familiarity – you take things for granted. I never thought that something as ordinary as Binondo can be, well, a tourist spot.

Nor I did expect that one Binondo Food Wok Tour group can actually be big enough to accommodate as much as 40 people!! And while there are some foreigners in the group, the majority are Pinoys. There’s not even a clear demographic. Clearly food – or a culinary tour for that matter- attracts just about any one .

But back to the spring roll (better known as lumpiang gulay here). I couldn’t believe that just behind one of the bank buildings that line Quintin Paredes Street is a small eatery that serves what is perhaps one of the best spring rolls that I had./ But it wasn’t just lumpia. I ate several pieces of hopia (love the ube flavor, but so is the pineapple one), fried siopao, tikoy, a small bowl of fishball soup, kiampong and freshly-made boiled (not steamed) dumplings. In some cases, we sit down for a meal, but most of the times, we eat , standing up, in front of stalls as Ivan talks about Binondo and Filipino Chinese cuisine.

Fried siopao being sold at a stall in Benavidez st.

Binondo is known for two things, says Ivan. Food and shopping. He will later expound on Binondo’s link to perhaps one of the world’s largest flea market – Divisoria, and how Binondo, which is first and foremost a commercial district, has streets which are just dedicated to certain type of businesses. So you go to Evangelista st. for electronic parts, Tomas Pinpin st. for furniture, and Ongpin st. for jewelry.

Binondo, after all, used to be the country’s premier business district. This district was created in the 16th century by the Spanish colonial government to serve as a permanent settlement for Chinese immigrants. Most of them were artisans and traders, and put in their roots in Binondo by putting both their home and shops here.

So it may no longer be the central business district, and shoppers have moved to air-conditioned malls. But foodies and shoppers alike can still find something to enjoy in Binondo’s streets, chockablock with stores and shops selling everything from fresh produce, noodles and herbal medicine to jewelry, paper lantern and dvds.

Cooks preparing dumplings at Dong Bei Dumpling store in Yuchengco st.

The four hour tour is in fact not even enough to explore Binondo. But how can anyone really explore everything here? There’s always something to discover and rediscover. Which is why it’s just fitting that the tour ended with a freebie – Ivan gave all of us in the group tour a free copy of a Binondo Food Wok Map so we can explore this food haven all year round!

**** Gypsygal Prime’s Recommendations:

2. Map: But if you want to explore on your own, I highly recommend you buy the Binondo Food Wok map, published by Old Manila Walk. The map costs P100.00/piece and is available in the ff. outlets:

1. Bahay Tsinoy Museum (Intramuros) 2. La Monja Loca Store (Intramuros) 3. Silahis Arts and Crafts (Intramuros) 4. New Victory Trading (Ongpin Street, Binondo) 5. Libros Filipinos Bookshop (Filipinas Heritage Library in Makati) 6. The Ayala Museum ( Makati) 7. Popular Bookstore (Quezon City)

Chinatown – Binondo: A Walking Food Tour

binondo food wok tour

Chinatown - Binondo: A Walking Food Tour

Unlike the upscale neighborhoods found parallel to it around the world, Manila’s Chinatown is nestled in a small enclave within the city, known locally as Binondo.

Binondo in Manila is the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594 by the Spanish Governor Luis Pérez Dasmarinas. Even before the arrival of the Spaniards, Binondo was a place where Filipino-Chinese traders from the province of Fujian managed their businesses, turning Binondo into the center of Chinese commerce in the city.

Thanks to its strategic location, the city became a vital trading post, connecting Asia to the New World with the help of Spanish galleon ships. In those days, Chinese immigrants were not allowed inside the walls of Spanish-controlled Manila, so they settled on the piece of land across the Pasig River, establishing a permanent residence for the growing number of migrants and Chinese citizens who had converted to Catholicism.

This area, strategically positioned and within “cannon shot” range of the Spanish fortress, became known as “Isla de Binondo,” or simply “Binondo.”

Prominent residents of the area include Saint Lorenzo Ruiz and the revered founder of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary, Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo.

With the support of Jesuit and Dominican priests, most Chinese immigrants and traders converted to Catholicism, making it no surprise that Manila’s Chinatown houses two of the most beautiful Baroque churches in the country. The most famous landmark in Chinatown is the Minor Basilica de San Lorenzo Ruiz, named after the first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz, who served as an altar boy in this church during his youth. Binondo Church was constructed in 1596 and is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines.

Another church, Santa Cruz Church, built in 1608, stands at the heart of Santa Cruz Square on its eastern side. Despite surviving several earthquakes and powerful typhoons, the church suffered the most significant damage during World War II and had to be rebuilt while preserving its original Baroque architectural style.

These historical churches are some of the highlights of Binondo, a place rich in history and culture that continues to be a vibrant part of Manila.

binondo food wok tour

Despite the fact that most of the Chinese settlers converted to Catholicism, a few of them remained Buddhists. However, whether Catholic or Buddhist, they preserved many traditional Chinese customs and incorporated them with Filipino traditions and beliefs.

The Chinese not only brought their business acumen and astuteness but also their unique flavors. Modern-day Binondo is a gastronomic paradise for all lovers of traditional Chinese cuisine.

As you wander through the narrow streets and tiny alleys, you’ll find countless stalls, restaurants, and hole-in-the-wall eateries serving some of the tastiest Chinese dishes you can imagine.

Given the constant traffic congestion, it’s better to leave your car at home and explore Binondo on foot. Go on a culinary adventure, shop until you drop, and discover trendy clothing and fashionable accessories at unbelievably low prices in the numerous shops.

If gold jewelry is your thing, you can find them in the rows of stores lining Ongpin Street. Just don’t be disappointed if you don’t stumble upon a gold nugget or two.

After you’ve explored all the tourist attractions, take selfies at famous landmarks, and indulged in legendary dishes like siopao, siomai, dumplings, purple hopia, and other flavors, don’t leave Binondo without trying the legendary siapo, siomai, dumplings, purple hopia, and other flavors. Come satisfy your hunger, challenge your taste buds, and embark on a culinary walking tour in Binondo. Kain tayo (Let’s eat)!

Dong Bei Dumpling Restaurant The restaurant is so small, but don’t let its diminutive size fool you. Their dumplings are giant in flavor, and they are probably the best dumplings on this side of Chinatown.

The menu includes pork dumplings, wonton, very chewy dumpling-style bread rolls (Xiao Long Bao), fried pancake dumplings, and tofu dishes. A “must-try” on the menu is the incredibly flavorful garlic dumplings (kuchay), which are sold for only $3 for 14 pieces and are prepared fresh right in front of you. While you wait, they even serve you tea on the house. For refreshment and health, you can also purchase the famous cold Chinese tea: Wong Lo Kat.

And if you still can’t get enough of these dumplings, you can always order more for takeout.

New Po Heng Lumpia House.

If you’re craving Hokkien-style spring rolls (lumpia roll Hokkien-style), you’ve come to the right place. This is simply a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, where at first, you’ll need to navigate through a narrow alley to find it. Surprisingly, the narrow alley opens up to a small and charming courtyard with a spring that belongs to an old residential building. Like many of the Far Eastern restaurants you can find in the heart of Binondo Chinatown, they prepare their lumpia right in front of you. This adds to the gastronomic experience a sense of anticipation and excitement as you indulge in these crispy and appetizing spring rolls, which have a subtle garlic aroma.

Some of the secret ingredients include seaweed (lato), tofu, minced pork, chopped peanuts, and vegetables like carrots and cabbage. The lumpia will be delicious no matter how you choose to have it, whether with a natural flavor, or with the addition of garlic and vinegar. In sweet or sour sauce, and the most flavorful one is the house lumpia – the New Po Heng Lumpia.

Sincerity Café and Restaurant.

Fried chicken is probably one of the most common and simplest dishes to prepare. And if you think you’ve had enough of this simple dish, just try half of Sincerity Restaurant’s famous fried chicken to change your mind (who doesn’t love fried chicken!). Their chicken is, in fact, quite famous and ranks second on the list of the top ten Pinoy-style fried chicken dishes in the Philippines.

Other interesting dishes include sticky rice with salty peanuts (Kiampong), egg noodle stir-fry (Kikiam), fried oyster cake, duck served on a bed of thin egg noodles (Duck Misua), and if you’re in the mood for something more exotic, they also serve fried frog legs.

Ying Ying Tea House.

This place is also one of the beloved culinary gems in Binondo. A quick glance at the establishment might give you the impression of a typical Chinese restaurant. There’s nothing extraordinary about the ambiance or service, but the place is always bustling with people who know what good food should taste like. Every dish at Ying Ying is worth every penny you’ll pay for it.

The most popular dishes include very tender spare ribs, Asado roll, hot salad, and taro soup. The oven-roasted Lechon Macau, with its crispy skin on the outside and tender, juicy meat on the inside, is exactly as it should be.

They also serve some of the tastiest congees (Congee) and dumplings in town. Another recommended dish is the Hakaw (shrimp siomai). To finish your meal, don’t forget to order a glass of Nai Cha, a cold, black tea mixed with milk, a refreshing way to complete your dining experience.

Quick Snack. For the past 47 years, this unpretentious restaurant has been serving not only Chinese dishes but also a fusion of Filipino, American, Spanish, and even Indonesian cuisines. It’s not surprising since the owner, originally of Chinese descent, hails from Indonesia.

Highlighted dishes on the menu include fresh lumpia (a top-seller), a vegetarian version of thin and salty Chinese noodles (misua), a Chinese-style filled pastry akin to empanadas (kutchay ah), and a house specialty – crispy noodles in satay sauce (Sate Mi). Good food at reasonable prices served quickly. It’s a combination that’s hard to beat.

The Original SaLido Restaurant.

This is likely the oldest restaurant in the Binondo district, having been here for over 50 years. It’s famous for its coffee (try some of their selection of Filipino coffee, called Barako), and this place is particularly popular among middle-aged men. Whether it’s for closing a business deal or just enjoying a conversation with friends, a cup of freshly ground coffee is always a treat.

In addition to their famous coffee, they also serve food dishes like Chami (a wide fried noodle dish) that you simply must try, stuffed and fried tofu leaves (Beancurd Roll), Japanese-style pork dumplings (Siomai), salt and pepper spare ribs, preserved salt-cured ham hock (Pata hamon), roasted pork in the Asado style, and their famous and recommended house dish, Salido-style fried rice.

Address: 839 Ongpin St., Binondo Manila, Philippines Phone: (+63 2) 5213331 Hours: Open daily from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

 Shanghai Fried Siopao.

Siopao are Chinese-style steamed buns filled with various fillings. Asado Siopao has a sweet filling made of pork, while Bola-Bola Siopao contains minced pork or chicken as the filling. These are classic dishes that you can find in many restaurants. However, if you want to try something a bit different from your regular Siopao, it’s best to visit Guagua Fried Siopao.

Somewhere between Ongpin Street and Bahama Street, you’ll find a small stall that sells Siopao and quickly becomes a favorite among food enthusiasts in Binondo. Treat yourself and find out why everyone raves about these fried Siopao. Just don’t be discouraged if you see people waiting in line, as this delicious Siopao often sells out quickly, and it takes some time to prepare a fresh batch.

So, be prepared to wait a bit to get what you want. You can always take them home and reheat them whenever you like.

Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli*.

Eng Bee Tin is well-known for its delicious Hopia, traditional Chinese pastries with various fillings. Hopia comes in different flavors and styles, and this shop offers some of the tastiest Hopia in Binondo. You can try Hopia Pandan (with a sweet coconut filling), Hopia Piña (with pineapple filling), Hopia Baboy (with pork filling), Hopia Mongo (with mung bean filling), or the classic Hopia Ube (with sweet purple yam filling).

For those who prioritize health, they also have Hopia Mongo Lite (with mung bean). A package of “Hopia for Long Life” would make a perfect birthday gift to send your best wishes for longevity and prosperity. However, Eng Bee Tin offers more than just Hopia. They also sell other Chinese snacks, traditional Filipino products, and even frozen items for you to take home. Keep an eye out for the purple fire extinguisher-themed packaging; these are the generous owner’s contributions to the Chinese community in Binondo.

If you prefer a quieter atmosphere while enjoying your Hopia, they also have a coffee shop called Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli’s Cafe Mezzanine or “Fireman’s Coffee Shop.” In addition to their products, the coffee shop serves simpler dishes and the famous Filipino dessert Halo-Halo, which is a refreshing blend of crushed ice and various sweet ingredients.

binondo food wok tour

Description

Feast on some of Binondo’s most famous Chinese dishes and treats with this shared Binondo walking food tour. This tour already comes with a guide that will lead you through the streets of Binondo.

Established in 1594, Binondo is the oldest Chinatown in the world and is home to several restaurants, food stalls, and tea houses that serve both Chinese and Filipino cuisine. It has become one of the go-to places in Metro Manila for a gastronomic experience.

This tour will last around three to four hours and can begin at either 9 AM or 3 PM, so choose the schedule that fits your itinerary for the day. First, you must meet in front of the Santa Cruz Church in Manila. Since this is a shared tour, be at the meet-up spot on time so you won’t be tagged as a no-show and left by the group. While some stops will offer a food sampler for those part of this tour, remember to bring enough cash with you so you can try more food and buy snacks that you can bring home.

You’ll begin with a walking tour of Ongpin Street , which is lined with eateries. Shanghai Fried Siopao and New Eastern Garden Restaurant are your first two stops. Here, you can try two Filipino-Chinese food favorites: siopao and lumpia.

At the Santo Cristo de Longos, you’ll take a break from eating and see the famous cross that is said to have been in Binondo since the Spanish period. Afterward, you’ll go hopia shopping in Eng Bee Tin Grocery , where you can also buy tikoy and mooncakes.

Make sure you have room in your stomach for more delicious food, as you will still try Lord Stow’s egg pies , Dong Bei Dumplings dim sum, and Ling Nam Noodle Factory and Wanton Parlor’s noodles.

Before heading to your final stop, Binondo Church , you’ll enjoy mocha and vanilla chiffon cakes at Eng Ho Bake Shop for your dessert.

My husband and I were in Moscow for a trip, and we love Chinese food, so went to Iron Wok. It was horrible. Absolutely unedible. I ordered almond chicken and sweet and sour shrimp, which came with fried rice and noodles. The almond chicken was like the worst McDonald's Mcnuggets with a totally flavorless white sauce over them. The sweet and sour shrimp was a cheap, highly colored commercial sweet and sour sauce with something that I know was NOT shrimp - some kind of shrimp substitute that tasted toxic. The rice was NOT fried rice, but white rice that tasted like it had been heated and reheated WAY too many times. The noodles were just plain gross. I was raised by a Father who grew up in the depression. I was raised to NEVER waste food. I went against my upbringing and simply walked away after a few bites and left the money for the bill on the table.

I love watching shows about restaurants and bars. That being said, I offer this loan point of criticism: Get a liquor License. That's right, they don't serve beer. That aside, this is the best Chinese food, I have had in ages. The food is amazing. The portion sizes are perfect, you will probably have plenty to take home with you. The service was also great! I just wish I could have had a beer with my meal. I can't wait to go back again.

The parking area does not speak of what is inside. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. The menu offers an abundance of choices. The servings are big. The specials are interesting; today's was Kung Pau Frog. What this restaurant needs is customers. It is under new management, and I hope others see this review and visit soon. I know I will be going back.

My fiance and I really wanted to enjoy this place, but after our 2nd visit it is now officially a place we will not go. Now to start out on the one positive the owner is super nice and tries her hardest to make it a great experience. Where it drops of is the food. Unfortunately, the food tastes like something you could make at home, aka it tastes homemade, but in a bad way. When I go to a restaurant I want to eat something that would taste way better than what I could make at home. Unfortunately, I believed I could actually improve the dishes we had which says a lot. Also, expect to wait a while as the only server we have seen both visits is the owner and she's running all over the place.

Golden Ring Tours

An opportunity to travel in time and experience the medieval towns of the Russian province

Home / Russia travel Destinations / Golden Ring Tours

Golden Ring Tours Immerse in Russian heritage, architectural masterpieces & stunning landscapes.

Golden ring tours overview.

Our Golden Ring Tours take place close to Russia's capital Moscow, yet seemingly a world away, adventuring to the beautifully preserved ancient cities of the Golden Ring route is a must. The cities of the Golden Ring are perfect destinations for travellers seeking the idyllic, provincial Mother Russia of old. A must short detour when Visiting Moscow. Scattered across a rural landscape of rolling hills, flower blanketed meadows, rivers and streams. The cities of the Golden Ring were considered political backwaters by the time Soviet industrialisation took hold, escaping much of the urban progress that rapidly engulfed Moscow and its surroundings. Consequently, many locals to the Golden Ring still lead a largely traditional existence, living in tight-knit communities where the ancestral izba (wooden farmhouse) is the centre of daily life.

 Golden Ring Russia, Travel Highlights:

  • Regarded as open-air museums, be enthralled by many of the Golden Ring’s ancient settlements and architectural masterpieces . These include the UNESCO-listed monasteries and onion-dome cathedrals in Yaroslavl, the white stone monuments of Vladimir (the Golden Gates, the church of Boris and Gleb), and the medieval wooden houses and windmills in Suzdal.
  • Our Golden Ring Tours facilitate immersion in the colourful culture of provincial Russia. Towns such as Ivanovo and Kostroma still maintain a largely traditional way of life. When you visit the Golden ring, be sure to try the delicious traditional Russian cuisine, admire time-honoured handicrafts and unearth ancient relics of the Soviet times.
  • Discover the sacred places of the orthodox religion at their many cathedrals, churches and historical monuments like the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius, the Holy Assumption Cathedral and the Cathedral of Transformation.
  • Uncover the age-old allure of Russia by delving into the rich history and legends of the Golden Ring. From Russian princes and knights to the early Tsars and Mongol invasions, you will experience something straight out of a fairytale.
  • Admire the stunning natural landscapes of the Golden Ring dominated by rippling meadows, lush green forests and winding rivers used to link fortified towns in the middle ages.

Many Golden Ring cities date back to at least the 10th century, and played a vital role in Medieval history, associated with the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church, the reign of Tsars and the Mongol Invasions. When you go on a Golden Ring tour, you will notice that virtually every town is a living museum, made up of ancient forts, towering monasteries, imposing palaces and magnificent cathedrals. Recognised for their artistic merit as an important place in history, four sites on the Golden Ring circuit have gained UNESCO World Heritage Site status, including the 1,000-year-old city of Yaroslavl.
