breda university international tourism management

Tourism comes with economic benefits, opportunities and treaths for the businesses in and habitants of a tourism destination. In the Master Tourism Destination Management you will learn how to develop strategies for responsible socio-economic growth.International professionals in tourism can make a difference. A difference between profit and loss, between chaos and structure, a difference for tourists as well as locals. The tourist industry at tourism destinations is looking for well educated professionals. In this professional master’s programme you learn to analyse, interpret and apply global developments and translate these into new opportunities.Tourism has developed into a dynamic and fast growing sector, creating an interdisciplinary field of study and research. The tourism industry offers economic benefits, growth and opportunities for people and businesses in destination areas. At the same time, matching demand (tourists) and supply (destinations) remains a challenge. It will always lead to a permanent but fluctuating flow of consumers to and from the destination areas. In tourism, as opposed to nearly all other economic goods and services, it is not the goods and services, but the consumers who are ‘distributed’. Without trivialising the role and the importance of the tourist as a consumer, it is clear that the position of the destination areas is becoming more and more important.

About the course

Nowadays tourism and recreation businesses face the challenge of keeping up with technology to maintain their market position. Companies with a traditional operational model need to develop new products and alternative customer approaches. This is what you will learn as a tourism management student at Breda University of Applied Sciences.

During this 4-year professional programme, you will work on problems arising from practice, using the foundation knowledge gained from classes in marketing, e-business, financial management and consumer behaviour. You will also work in group projects with fellow students, as well as attending soft skills training sessions, guest lectures, company visits, study trips and work placements. These opportunities ensure you develop the competencies you will need as a qualified professional.

Study programme

The first-year curriculum centres around three themes: the travel industry, the recreation sector, and tourism destinations.

Study trips to other cities and company visits are the highlight of this year. In addition, you will study a foreign language. Options include Frence, German, Spanish, Italian and Chinese.

Second year

You will continue to develop a general knowledge of all aspects of the tourism industry through foundational modules in change management, smart organisation and marketing. On the other hand, you will start building specialist expertise by following one of the following tracks: Travel Industry , Recreation and Hospitality ,  Tourism Destination and Attractions and Theme Parks Management .

In your third year of study, you will develop the ability to explore a subject matter in depth. To do so, you will choose one of the following specialisations:

In addition, the second half of the third year consists of a 20-week work placement. The programme boasts an extensive international network, which means that there are many options in terms of placement positions. You can make use of this network or set out to look for a suitable placement position yourself.

Fourth year

In the final year, you will opt for a minor in order to either broaden or deepen your knowledge.

The minor is followed by a graduation track during which you will write a thesis.

Alternative options are completing a one-year track in student training company  Newways , YTP@Work (Information in Dutch). Breda has a growing number of students, which is why accommodation in Breda can be scarce. Unfortunately, Breda University of Applied Sciences has no campus or student rooms of its own and, therefore, it will be your own responsibility to find accommodation in Breda. Rental prices for a student room in Breda vary from €300 to €500 per calendar month. However, you will most commonly find rooms to rent for around € 400. Make sure you book a room in time (preferably in the early spring), so you have the best chances to book the room that suits your wishes. Unfurnished rooms can be cheaper to rent than furnished ones and since most rooms in the Breda are unfurnished, you may need to furnish your room yourself. This doesn’t have to be expensive as there are many DIY stores, second hand stores and second hand websites and Facebook pages.

If you want to find a good place to live in time, Breda University of Applied Sciences encourages you to subscribe to Klik voor Kamers (Click for rooms). This is a joint initiative of the three housing corporations in Breda: Laurentius, Singelveste Alleewonen and WonenBreburg.

Growth in international tourism is so enormous, that tourism itself has evolved into an engine of the world’s economy. Tourism as a worldwide phenomenon is closely connected and intertwined with major global changes in culture, politics, technology, economics and the environment. You can start to work, for instance, as an advisor, policy officer, manager, or marketeer.

After graduation, students can find interesting positions at: National and regional tourism boards, Existing and new business ventures, Management and business development advisory firms, Government organizations and departments, National and regional parks, Research firms (including marketing research firms), International policy-making bodies, Airlines and Airports.

With a bachelors diploma from Breda University of Applied Sciences, you can continue with a Master’s programme, for example, the “Master in Tourism Destination Management”. If you want to do a Master abroad, you can usually start straight away. If you wish to do a Master’s degree at a research university in the Netherlands, you may be required to follow a pre-Master’s programme.

The world is changing rapidly and as a professional in the tourism and recreation industry, you must be able to apply new technologies in your (commercial) activities in a socially responsible and sustainable manner. With a proactive and inquisitive attitude, you will learn to apply broad-minded and innovative thinking.

Year 1 is made up of 12 modules spread over six six-week blocks. You will also be taught English and one other modern foreign language. You can choose from French, German or Spanish. Your choice depends on your entry level and whether there are enough applicants to offer that language course.

The modules focus on the travel industry, the recreation sector, and tourism destinations, covering topics such as sustainability, online marketing, financial management, and consumer behavior.

In year 2 you will further explore the tourism industry. You will have extensive exposure to the international travel and airline industry, and the leisure and hospitality world, and you will deal with all the challenges faced by destinations near and far.

The year consists of six blocks of six weeks each, with three modules per block. In addition, you will take English classes and one other modern language course.

In the second year, you will delve into subjects such as the impact of tourism on a destination, trends, and developments in the field of tourism, marketing, and technology, and online consumer behavior with a focus on social media, and you will learn who the aviation and travel industry players are.

You will be guided by a coach using individual talks and workshops centered on the Student Profile Analysis. This is a report that gives you insight into your behavior, motivation, and talents. As a result, you will get to know yourself and your qualities better, allowing you to make better choices in the future.

Specialization: Attractions & Theme Parks Management

In year 2 you can specialize in Attractions & Theme Parks Management. This is an English-taught study track that you will complete in years 2 and 3, together with students from Leisure & Events Management and International Facility Management.

Attractions and theme parks are continuously innovating and diversifying. For instance, attraction parks are evolving into complete holiday resorts offering accommodation and entertainment at the same time. Shopping centers nowadays often have additional attractions such as food courts or simulators, zoos are expanding to include more facilities (e.g. climbing parks), and museums are adding entertainment and experiential elements to their cultural and educational offerings.

If you choose this area of specialization, you will gain insight into marketing, finance, staff planning, hospitality, and security and safety. You will also have the opportunity to do a work placement at leading parks such as Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Europa Park in Germany, and Efteling.

As from Year 3, you will get to outline your learning path to an increasing degree. You have meanwhile gained enough knowledge about the tourism industry to determine your interests. In year 3 you will go on placement and attend a specialization track.

Work placement

You will do a 20-week work placement. You will gain practical experience and prepare for a position in the tourism and recreation field. BUas boasts an extensive national and international network, which means that there are many options in terms of placement positions, both at home and abroad. You can make use of this network or find a suitable placement position yourself. You will be supported in your search for a placement position by the placement office.

Possible placement positions:

  • Communication assistant at Landal GreenParks
  • Tikibad Supervisor at Duinrell
  • Sun Holidays assistant at TUI
  • Sustainability assistant at Transavia
  • Assistant influencer marketing & social media at NBTC Holland Marketing
  • Placement at EF Language School in Madrid
  • Marketing Assistant at Corinthia Hotels Malta
  • Sales assistant at Happy Gringo Travel in Ecuador

Areas of specialization

In this year, you will choose one of the following areas of specialization areas:

  • E-Tourism: thinking up, implementing, and executing digital marketing and management strategies for organizations operating in the tourism industry;
  • Tourism Design & Development: developing innovations, approaches, and strategies for the development of international sustainable tourism;
  • Tourism Business: developing a sense of enterprise, and inspiring employees to offer tourists high-quality services;
  • Tourist Experience: advising organizations in the tourism industry to enable them to excel in service orientation.

If you choose the study track Attractions & Theme Parks Management you do not have to choose a specialization in year 3.

In the fourth year, you start with a minor. This may be a deepening minor in which you further specialize within tourism, or you could look beyond the boundaries of tourism: a broadening minor. A minor usually lasts five months, but we also offer a minor you can take for the whole academic year through our Newways training company. It is also possible to take a minor at another school in the Netherlands or abroad. Or you attend the pre-master's program in Strategic Business Management and Marketing in the fourth year. After this pre-master, you will have direct access to Master of Science programs at our partner universities.

After completing your minor, you will start your graduation project. This involves writing a thesis for a client. You have to find this client yourself and you are free to choose between a graduation placement or a research project. There is a wide variation in thesis topics; below you will find a small list with some examples from last academic year:

  • Exploring and enhancing the motivation of front-of-house staff at the Hyatt Regency Aruba
  • Voluntourism and social impact - negative social impacts and the awareness of backpackers
  • Effects of neo-colonialism on tourism development and community participation of the Maasai community in Kenya
  • Expansion of Kingfisher Tours to the German market
  • Coping with seasonality in ski resorts, a case of Bansko, Bulgaria

You will be assigned a supervisor who will guide you through the graduation process. The graduation process is individual, but you will join a learning community where you and your fellow students and lecturers regularly meet, inspire, and help each other. After submitting your thesis, you will defend your thesis in an oral exam. Once you have passed this, you have officially obtained your degree and can call yourself a true Tourism professional!

Study load and coaching

The average study load for this program amounts to, on average, 40 hours a week, for 42 weeks. The number of hours students spend on their studies every week depends on each student and differs per week. The last weeks of each term and the exam weeks are relatively busy.

During your studies, you will be supported by a coach in the specialization area you will choose, for your personal and professional development. We will teach you to take a critical look at yourself and ask yourself who you are, what you want, what you can do, what you do, what your goal is, and what you need to achieve that goal. You will learn to put yourself in somebody else’s position, what it is like to be in another culture, and other situations (ability to empathize). In addition, you will work on a fundamentally critical attitude, learn to make well-founded choices, and further develop your adaptability and problem-solving skills.

In Year 2, each student will take part in a unique assessment, which results in a personal profile analysis (based on the DISC method). This analysis will provide insight into your behavior, talents, and how you tackle things and prefer to do things. It will also support you in making choices.

Pre-masters

BUas offers its own pre-master's program Strategic Business Management and Marketing (SBM). If your academic results are good, you will be offered the opportunity to attend this pre-master’s program in your fourth year. Successful completion of this track will give you direct access, after Breda University of Applied Sciences, to various Master of Science programs in business-related studies in management and marketing at several partner universities. A few examples are the universities of Maastricht, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. In this way, it will be possible for you to earn an academic master's degree within five years' time or, after having completed an accelerated three-year track, even within four years.

After your fourth year, you can also opt for a pre-master’s program at a Dutch research university to gain direct access to their master’s programs.

But in all cases you will deepen your knowledge of international tourism by means of course material that matches international standards and is a unique combination of (business) planning, tourism and travel developments, cross cultural studies and marketing, focused on your chosen specialisation. To test your knowledge and understanding of the subject, individual exams, group assignments and/or group presentations are used.

Field research projects

You will visit a tourism destination for about three weeks to gain in-depth knowledge of the real-life operations and dynamics within a tourism destination. The ITTI students for example might travel to Brazil to conduct market research linked to courses that are important to their curriculum, such as Tour Operating and Aviation Management. While the ITMC students on the other hand will travel to a destination in South East Asia, like Koh Samui in Thailand or Bali in Indonesia, to conduct a Destination Analysis. This is also linked to relevant courses from their curriculum, such as Analysing Tourism Markets, Tourism Network Dynamics and Cross-Cultural Studies. The field research projects by themselves, and the courses connected to them will offer you a real understanding of the tourism industry and the tourism destination

Specialisations

The International Tourism Management programme offers two specialisations:

International Tourism Management and Consultancy

This specialisation focuses on the international tourism destination. Special attention is given to applied research, connections between theory and (real-life) practice, and the context for rapid change in the international tourism setting. The analysis of destination dynamics prepares you for a global career in the public or private sector. The emphasis is on the dynamics of tourism development at destinations, emerging economies, local community involvement and business feasibility.

International Tourism and Travel Industry

As a manager in the Tourism and Travel Industry you are in charge of fine tuning holiday tours and business trips to the wishes and needs of your clients. This specialisation pays close attention to planning, buying, organising, publicising and distributing trips and tours on demand (tourists) and supply (tourism destinations) and extensively deals with developments and operations in the airline and airport industry. Special attention is also given to upcoming travel markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China. You will be trained for commercial positions which require knowledge of aviation, leisure and business tourism, hospitality, economics, marketing and management.

Fast tracks

The International Tourism Management programme offers you the opportunity to finish your study in three years if you already have a pre-university education (vwo or Hochschulereifezeugnis) or a vocational education (mtro tourism level 4). If you choose to register for the three-year track, you have to determine two choices in advance:

  • choose one of the two specialisations, information can be found below
  • information for Dutch students
  • information for foreign students

Three-year track International Tourism Management and Consultancy

To facilitate your integration in the second year of the regular programme, you follow two courses in Marketing and Tourism during the first six weeks of the year. These courses are taught parallel to the regular programme. You attend a semester focusing on Tourism and Development and a semester which revolves around The Destination. Both semesters are constructed of various courses, languages and training sessions which can be found in the curriculum of the programme. In the second semester you will participate in a fieldwork project abroad, where you will not only be introduced to research and consultancy work in tourist destination areas, but you will also actually set to work on this subject yourself, under expert supervision.

The third semester titled Business Planning contains courses such as Financial Accounting, Feasibility Study and Project Management. During this semester you prepare for your full-time work placement abroad which is scheduled in the fourth semester (January to June).

In the final year - in semester 5, you can shape your study plan to meet your individual needs by choosing from the extensive courses and seminars. For your specialisation, you choose four courses and three seminars; participation in international tourism projects is compulsory in this semester. In semester 6 you will conclude your study mme by writing an internationally oriented thesis.

Three-year track International Tourism and Travel Industry

The subject matter of this (first) ITTI year focuses on the introduction of tour operating and aviation management. Besides this, courses in marketing, operational management, research, concept and product development will be offered in a tourism context. The teaching method consists of projects and courses. In addition, you will be given a number of skill workshops and language courses.

In the first half of the second year you will be involved in a program that focuses on deepening your knowledge of tour operating, aviation, marketing and management. Cross cultural issues will be part of the program as well, because it will help you to perform in international environments. In the second half you will do a work placement. Students from abroad may choose for a placement in the Netherlands. Dutch students need to go abroad.

In this graduation year you will write your thesis in the second semester. Before that you will have the opportunity to specialise (minor/individual specialisation) in a particular work field. The first semester program emphasizes also on globalisation issues related to the travel and tourism industry.
