“I’ve always been akin to the elderly, soaking up their wisdom, life experiences, and stories about the good ole days. When my father’s health began to decline in his early nineties, our family searched high and low for the right community to take care of him as he had always taken care of us. I wanted what anyone wants for their loved one – a place where he could feel safe, loved and respected. A place where he is known, where he would be treated as family and even be served his favorite breakfast, hot tea and a bowl of porridge with fresh peaches. My search for this dream community evolved into a personal quest, and I took it upon myself to create what didn’t yet exist in our town. While it didn’t come to fruition during my father’s lifetime, I believe it would do him great honor to see the doors opening on our dream community, Hill House Memory Care, this coming year in our hometown of Moscow, the very place this farm girl was born and raised.”

Enrichment Program

Help us keep our pets happy!

Here at HSoP we strive to ensure our animals receive the highest level of care possible. This includes physical, mental, and emotional stimulation while they stay with us. We do our best to make sure each animal in our facility receives all preventative and necessary medical attention, as well as enrichment in their kennels to keep them entertained. Did you know animals can go stir crazy when they are confined in a small space for periods of time with no distractions? This is a common issue for animal shelters nationwide, and we are determined to limit that likelihood as much as possible for the animals here at HSoP.

The staff here at HSoP are dedicated to making sure each animal has plenty of stimulation both physical and mental, to keep them from getting bored. Our wonderful volunteers help with this by taking the animals out of their kennels for some free time in a different area.

Our dogs enjoy going to their outside kennels and side yard to play fetch, stretch their legs, and change their scenery! Our cats love to get out of their kennels and go into our adoption room so they can stretch their legs, chase some toys, and get some extra special cuddles!

We want our animals to have a great experience here while they wait for their new homes, so we are starting an Enrichment Program. This program will be dedicated to finding new and innovative ways to keep our furry friends busy and happy in their kennels!

THERAPY DOGS IN NURSING HOMES AND HOSPITALS

Updated: Apr 25

brown dog wearing therapy dog vest by tree

There is no question that therapy dog visits to the elderly in nursing homes and hospitals have countless positive effects. A dog is man’s best friend, and that same logic holds true as people age and can no longer take care of their pets because they are moving to a nursing home or are in the hospital. We can’t forget about the companionship a pet offers a person, thus, increasing their overall health, physically and mentally.

Professor of the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Karen Snowden, says, “Having regular interactions with a pet has shown to lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety, increase physical activity, and enhance social opportunities.”

There are nursing shortages all over the country, and unfortunately, this leads to patients receiving only the necessary interactions with the staff. This shortage is an excellent opportunity for service dogs to fulfill the void of human exchanges. New Life K9s is one non-profit agency that trains K9s to be placed in facilities, allowing the human-K9 bond to provide immeasurable benefits.

A dog can help an older person with exercise. They can walk the dog up and down the hallways, allowing for more mobility and a purpose for getting out of bed or sitting in a chair for long periods. In addition, this may help alleviate the isolation a person may be experiencing by staying in their room.

Having a dog in a nursing home or hospital setting can increase socialization among the patients and residents, not to mention the joy and laughter that can be experienced. Imagine what laughter could do for the elderly in nursing homes and hospitals when they feel all alone. Laughter can significantly impact mental health by putting us in a good mood, creating a positive outlook on life, and decreasing depression and anxiety.

Dogs can assist in recalling memories of a patient’s pet. Talking can lead to having a sense of belonging and encourage each other to share stories from their past. Again, this is an opportunity for conversation among patients that might not have existed. In addition, therapy dogs interacting with patients can reduce stress levels and blood pressure. They bring a sense of calmness with the unconditional love they provide. Due to this exchange between a dog and a patient, the medications taken may be able to be decreased.

Therapy dogs can be crucial in an elderly person’s life in a nursing home or a hospital setting. K9s provide companionship and unconditional love and are a joy to have around. Patients’ lives can be enhanced when a dog is present through exercise, increased conversations, laughter, and entertainment, which ultimately improves overall physical and mental health.

One thing to remember is that not all nursing homes and hospitals allow therapy dogs inside. Certain precautions would need to be taken, such as ensuring the patients don’t have dog allergies and the dogs coming in are well-trained. The benefits of therapy dogs in nursing homes and hospitals certainly outweigh the drawbacks, so perhaps one day, all nursing homes and hospitals can accommodate these life-changing animals.

Visit NewLifeK9s.org to see how you can help enrich people’s lives through the human-canine bond.

Upcoming events, client testimonials.

I recently started needing care and I was signed up with Serengeti. I wasn't sure about having a stranger in my house but I must say their care team is friendly, professional and helpful. They asked me on my interests and goals and matched me with a caregiver who shared my interests. It's more of personalized and compassionate care team that offers exemplary experience. I highly endorse their excellent care programme.

I was recently injured in a fall and had to go to the hospital. I am partially paralyzed. This is all new to me and I needed help because I’m not independent anymore so I made the first call I found on the web which was Serengeti Care. I am quite pleased. I am receiving exceptional care which now allows me to work from home and be at ease. Now I feel safe. I was impressed with their knowledge of the rehabilitation services in the Tri-Cities and recommend them for their services whole-heartedly.

Mom found out she had cancer in the hospital. It was too far along to treat. She wanted to go home, and given that she wasn’t being treated the hospital wanted her to leave…but her assisted living facility wouldn’t let her return without care as she was no longer completely able to care for herself.

I was in a panic – I could help some, but I didn’t live nearby. I left messages (during the holidays!) at a dozen caregiving companies. Several didn’t get back to me. Most got back to me after a few days, and said they didn’t have openings. But Serengeti responded first, and said they could help. And they did…within 24 hours, they had 24/7 caregivers lined up.

We had to make a few adjustments along the way; they were very gracious and made it easy. The caregivers were fantastic – they really made a difference in Mom’s life. And mine!

We hired Serengeti to care for my dad who had advanced cancer and had just come out of the hospital after a fall, right during the middle of COVID lockdowns. We hoped to insure he had excellent care, while still remaining in my brother’s home, rather than in a facility where there was a chance we would not be permitted to see/visit with him. Serengeti went far beyond our expectations. John and Lucy were professional – on time and reliable each day; cajoling Dad into completing his physical therapy (even when he didn’t want to!); making sure he was clean and well-fed, even when his degenerating condition made these normally small tasks a large chore. Moreover, Mo Chatta was easily accessible – a very important issue since I live out of state and was often required to do administrative calls for my brother while he was at work. Mo always resolved our concerns quickly and efficiently. I would highly recommend Serengeti to anybody.

Serengeti was outstanding! Josephine came and met with us to discuss potential home care on a Sunday. She was very informative. Nancy and Samuel were very personable, attentive, helpful caregivers. Serengeti gave our family much peace of mind.

Thank you for taking care of my father. You all went above and beyond in ensuring he received the care he needed. Your caregivers were always on time and attentive to my father’s ever-changing needs and office managers were super responsive

Excellent and caring service from beginning to end. Placement was quick and very well matched to need. The caregiver worked with my mother in-law for over half a year (until her demise from cancer and dementia) and they became friends. The staff checked in appropriately to determine everything was being handled correctly. I would highly recommend giving Serengeti a chance prior to working with larger firms. The difficulty in this business is finding good caregivers. And the larger a company grows, the more they need to rely on anyone who walks in the door looking for work.

I cannot say enough about the staff at Serengeti Home Care. We had an emergent need for care for my elderly mother over the New Year holiday and they were able to come the day we called. They provided patient and a high level of care for my mother at a very stressful time. Their professionalism was above and beyond, especially when my mother was difficult to care for much of the time. We had used another agency the year prior, and Serengeti is the only one I would recommend. Thank you so much!

Excellent service and care.Dennis and James took excellent care of my father. James took extra time out of his day to reach out to me personally, to see how I was doing after my dad passed. I highly recommend them.

Preparing a Pet for a Home Vet Visit: 9 Essential Tips

A dog in its owner's lap thinking about an upcoming home vet visit.

Table of Contents

Home veterinary visits are changing the game for pet care , allowing our furry friends to receive expert medical attention without leaving their favorite lounging spot. Gone are the days of stressful car rides or anxious waiting room moments!

But as with all good things, preparing a pet for an in-home visit makes things even smoother. Setting the stage for your pet and the veterinarian helps to achieve a successful checkup, ensuring everyone's comfort.

Here's how to prepare your pet for an at-home vet visit:

1. Gather Medical Records

Before the veterinarian arrives, it's a good idea to have your pet's medical history on hand . This includes previous visit summaries, vaccination cards, and any prescribed medication details.

A comprehensive view of your pet’s health journey helps the veterinarian offer the best care possible.

2. Designate a Safe Place

Choose a quiet and familiar space in your home for the veterinarian’s visit. This could be your living room, a spacious bedroom, or any area your pet feels relaxed in.

Make sure that the area is clear so that there is room for the veterinarian to examine your pet as well as no hiding places.  Close doors to other spaces to ensure your pet is present when the veterinarian arrives.

🏆 The goal is to keep the environment calm and stress-free.

3. Stock Up on Supplies

Have essentials like treats, toys, or even their favorite blanket ready . These items can comfort or distract your pet during the examination.

Remember to keep things like favorite treats, towels, muzzles or crates (for pets that might become anxious), and leashes within reach.

🐱 New Kitten Checklist

🐶 New Puppy Checklist

4. Prepare Your Questions

Like a regular veterinary visit, you'll want to maximize the time you have. Jot down any questions or concerns you might have about your pet’s health or behavior.

Being proactive ensures you don’t forget to address any pressing issues.

5. Communicate with Your Veterinarian

It’s important to communicate with your veterinary team before your home visit . Let them know if your dog or cat tends to become highly anxious or tries to bite.

Share anything other information you think is important for your veterinarian to know about your pet. This helps your team to prepare in advance and be better equipped for the safety and care of your pet.

6. Keep Distractions at Bay

Reduce potential stressors by minimizing disruptions . This might mean keeping other pets away, turning off loud appliances, or letting family members know in advance so they can either be present or give space as needed.

7. Practice Calming Techniques

Some pets are naturally more anxious than others. If your pet tends to get stressed, consider calming techniques .

This could include playing some gentle music, using pheromone sprays, or introducing them to a calming collar before the veterinarian’s arrival.

Does My Dog Have Anxiety?

1. does your dog bark a lot when you’re not at home, 2. is your dog panting a lot more than usual, 3. is your dog destructive when left alone (chewing, digging, or shredding), 4. is your dog having accidents inside the house more than usual, 5. is your dog drooling more than usual, 6. is your dog shedding or losing hair in patches more than usual, 7. does your dog seem like they are on high alert (can’t relax, overly watchful, or pacing), 8. is your dog demonstrating repetitive behaviors (spinning, digging, biting their paws or tail), 9. has your dog experienced sleep changes recently (sleeping a lot more or less than usual), view results, 8. familiarize your pet with the veterinarian.

Let your pet have a casual meet-and-greet with the veterinarian before diving into the medical procedures. A simple hello, accompanied by a treat from the veterinarian, can set a positive tone for the actual checkup.

Our veterinarians use a Fear Free® approach, ensuring a calm and friendly start to each visit.

9. Provide Quiet Time Post Appointment

After the veterinarian leaves, give your pet some quiet time or a favorite activity to help them relax. Monitor them to ensure there are no post-visit issues and reward them with a treat or play session.

Bringing the veterinarian into your home isn't just about convenience —it's about creating an ideal environment for pet care .

In the familiar and relaxed home setting, your pet remains calm, making it easier for the veterinarian to get an accurate read on their health. For all the busy pet parents, home veterinary services save time and reduce stress, taking out the hectic trips to the clinic.

Remember, when your pet is comfortable, they can truly be themselves, making each checkup much more effective.

Ready to make veterinary visits cozy and hassle-free? Book a home vet visit with BetterVet and let your furry friend receive the gentle care they deserve in their favorite place—their home!

Since January 2024 I have been using Von Arroyo Kennels to watch my two dogs as I have navigated selling my home and moving to Colorado. During my first consultation and visit to their property, I met Victor, his brother Vicente, and their mother. They are such a warm and welcoming family who care deeply for animals. By my second visit, I met their dad and fully realized that the entire family is part of ensuring that the dogs in their care are taken care of. I could tell by how they talked about my dogs, that they saw my dogs as I did and described personality characteristics that only an owner might see. It meant a lot to me and created trust in them when I dropped my dogs off. I will be sad when I move to Colorado that I will no longer be able to utilize their service. If you want an environment for your dogs that feels like family, Von Arroyo Kennel is the place for you and your furry friend.

I have been very anxious about leaving my two dogs at a kennel. I contacted Victor at Von Arroyo Kennels and he offered a meet and greet prior to me boarding my dogs. I could see from the pictures that the kennels are big, clean, covered and have all of the necessary amenities. What I didn't know was that I would feel a great deal of relief upon meeting Victor and his brother Vicente and seeing the kennel and their setup in person. My dogs took to both of them immediately and I feel relieved and prepared for their scheduled boarding. Thank you Victor and Vicente for taking the time to calm my nerves! :)

Thanks for joining us for an extremely busy night here in the Politics Hub, including for the final debate between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer before the general election next Thursday.

You can scroll through the page to catch up with the highlights.

And we'll be back from 6am with all the very latest.

Until then - read all the latest from Sky News below:

By  Tim Baker , political reporter, in Nottingham

One of the more amusing moments of the debate tonight was Robert, who told Rishi Sunak he was a "mediocre" prime minister and said Sir Keir's strings were being pulled by senior members of the Labour Party.

He is brought into the spin room by BBC production staff for journalists to talk to.

He tells us that he is a life-long Conservative voter - but at the moment is undecided.

Robert says he has recorded the debate and will be watching it again when he gets home.

However, he reckons he is leaning towards the Conservatives - believe Sir Keir has an "undeclared agenda".

Daisy Cooper, the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, has said the UK "deserves so much better" than the leaders' debate held tonight.

Reacting to the clash between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer, she said: "Tonight the audience spoke for the nation when they asked: is this really the best we've got?

"Our country deserves so much better than what we watched this evening.

"Liberal Democrats are listening to you and fighting hard for the issues that matter to people.

"From the NHS to tackling the cost of living, we want a fair deal for our country.”

A Conservative win would mean "five more years of chaos" and Rishi Sunak has shown tonight "just how out of touch he is", Labour's campaign coordinator has said.

Reacting to the leader's debate, Pat McFadden said Sir Keir Starmer "exposed the Tory manifesto as unfunded".

"Keir Starmer and Labour will return politics to public service, putting country before party in stark contrast to partygate and dodgy COVID contracts," he said.

"On 4 July, we have a chance to turn the page and start to rebuild with Labour."

Tonight was an "important moment" for Rishi Sunak as he put his opponent "on the spot", says our deputy political editor Sam Coates .

Coates says he thinks the prime minister would have been "very happy" with his performance - and adds that some of his aides were even "punching the air" after the debate.

It was a performance Mr Sunak "desperately needed earlier in the campaign", he adds.

He says Mr Sunak had a "clear strategy... to demand answers from Keir Starmer on tax and whether it will go up, on welfare and how you get people off benefits, on 'smashing the gangs' and whether the Rwanda policy is needed..."

Coates says Sir Keir provided a "range" of answers as the prime minister sparred with him.

"Sometimes he had specifics, sometimes he did not," he says.

"That strategy, although executed in a way I think that the Conservative Party tonight is very happy with, has nevertheless been judged not decisively in Keir Starmer or Rishi Sunak's favour," says Coates, referring to the YouGov poll showing there was no winner in the final debate of the election (see 21.38 post).

The final TV clash of the election campaign was an ill-tempered shouting match, at least from Rishi Sunak.

Sir Keir was more measured. More prime ministerial, perhaps?

As he had to as the underdog, Mr Sunak went on the attack from the start until the very end and unveiled a new campaign slogan: "Don't surrender…"

He said it no fewer than 15 times during the 75-minute debate. That’s once every five minutes.

But just like the England-Slovenia Euros match 24 hours earlier, the result was a draw: 50%-50% exactly, according to pollsters YouGov.

At the outset, the PM served notice that he wanted to talk about tax, while Sir Keir wanted to talk about politicians gambling.

As Mr Sunak read out prepared lines, it was a smart ad lib from Sir Keir that won the first round of applause.

"If you listened to people in the audience a bit more you might not be so out of touch," he said, in a familiar Labour attack line.

But the PM was strong and came out on top in exchanges on illegal migrants crossing the Channel.

One of the best moments came when a member of the audience, Robert, asked a devastating question: "Are you two really the best we’ve got to the next prime minister of our great country?"

By the end, the debate closed out as it began - with Mr Sunak shouting over the Labour leader. It wasn't a good look.

And as the debate ended, there was no handshake between the pair, which is unusual for these TV clashes.

At least party leaders pretend to be civilised towards each other usually.

There's clearly no love lost between these two - and it showed.

Darren Jones, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, is among the Labour representatives in the spin room this evening.

He's asked first about his leaked comments that Labour's target for decarbonising the economy will cost "hundreds of billions" of pounds.

Sir David Davis, who sticks around for this encounter, asks why Mr Jones's party "downgraded" their net zero plans.

"Because you guys crashed the economy," the shadow chief secretary responds.

Sunak 'behaved badly' in debate

On the leader's debate, Mr Jones says Sir Keir Starmer came across as "clearly more prime ministerial" - and adds that he thinks Rishi Sunak behaved "quite badly".

"He didn't answer questions that were put to him and was constantly speaking over Keir and Mishal [Husain, the BBC host]."

He denies Sir Keir's remarks that Mr Sunak is out of touch were "below the belt".

"Rishi Sunak is going around the country telling everyone that they've never had it so good... they crashed the economy, people at home know that because they paid the price for it."

Up to spin for the Conservatives is ex-minister David Davis.

"This debate was very important," he says, noting it's the final one before the public decides who to back.

He was a fan of Rishi Sunak's new attack line - the repeated pleas to voters not to "surrender" their borders or finances to Labour.

"[Sunak has] faced a once-in-a-generation issue in terms of a war in Europe, he's faced a once-in-a-century issue in terms of a pandemic, and he did it with an economy from which we'd inherited massive debts in the past," he adds.

After all that, "he managed to get inflation down from 11% to 2% in six months".

"The public will look at this and say: 'We've got a difficult world, all sorts of disruptions at home and abroad, who will deal with it the best of these two'?" he says.

"I know who I'll be voting for."

With minutes to go, a group of smiling Labour spinners arrived to watch the final summations.

Darren Jones - under fire for his comments about the cost of going for net zero, revealed in The Telegraph - tells Sky News it's clear who was more prime ministerial during the debate.

He and the other Starmer backers then burst away to the various cameras and microphones to talk up their leader.

Meanwhile, serious faced Conservatives enter from the other end of the room to give their verdicts.

Tory candidate - and former minister - David Davis says he thinks Rishi Sunak's repetition of the "surrender" phrase will have gone down well.

This just in from YouGov - which has found there was no winner in tonight's BBC leaders' debate, the last of the general election campaign.

Asked who performed best - the results came in exactly 50/50.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates says there will likely be disappointment in the Conservative ranks over this result.

"Neck-and-neck polling doesn't seem to me like it's going to change the race," he says.

"I think there's a really interesting question about Rishi Sunak's tactics, in my view, watching that, he was effective in highlighting the choice - the policy difference between the two men.

"I wonder looking at that poll whether that's what the public are really looking for."

However, there were distinctions when viewers were asked who performed better on certain topics.

Rishi Sunak came out on top on immigration and tax, while Sir Keir Starmer performed better on welfare and the UK's relationship with the EU.

Labour also just edged ahead on the economy - with 47% saying they performed better, and 43% backing the Tories.
