For dialysis patients on a cruise, there is usually one nurse per two patients. Each Dialysis treatment usually involves a visit from a Nephrologist.

What is Hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis uses an artificial kidney (hemodialyzer) to remove extra chemicals, fluid, and waste from a patient’s blood. To get blood into the hemodialyzer, a doctor uses minor surgery to the patient’s arm or leg to make an entrance into the blood vessels.

Access is often made by joining an artery to a vein, which results in a bigger blood vessel called a fistula. Alternatively, a plastic tube is used to join an artery and vein under the skin called a graft.

Hemodialysis treatments are usually done three times per week, with a single treatment lasting for an average of four hours.

On certain routes, equipment and machinery for this type of treatment are usually carried on board by specialized independent companies like Dialysis at Sea and Cruise Dialysis.

What is Peritoneal Dialysis?

With Peritoneal Dialysis, the blood is cleaned inside the patient’s body. Surgery involves a plastic tube (catheter) that is placed into the patient’s abdomen. Treatment involves the process of the abdomen being slowly filled with dialysate through the catheter.

Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis is done without any machines.

The patient places a dialysate bag into their peritoneal cavity through the catheter four or five times per day. It takes about four or five hours for the dialysate to drain back into the bag, after which the bag is then thrown away.

Automated Peritoneal Dialysis is done by using a machine called a cycler. The process is similar to CAPD. However, with APD, the cycles are done at night while the patient is sleeping, and each cycle lasts one to two hours.

Guests are able to bring on their own machines on the cruise.

Important note: It is often recommended that people on peritoneal dialysis have a year’s experience managing their condition before traveling. Some cruise lines will insist the one year’s experience, especially if they do not have a kidney specialist on board.

Depending on the type of dialysis treatment you will need, you may need to pack your own medical supplies and/or your cycler machine.

Depending on your type of treatment, you have two choices about where the treatment will take place:

How Do You Book Dialysis on a Cruise Ship?

Once you know where you’re going and on what date, it is a good idea to contact one of the specialized independent companies that organize dialysis on cruises.

On occasion, if you directly phone the cruise line, they will still direct you to one of the independent companies so it’s usually easiest to contact one of these companies first. They work with the cruise lines to provide the treatments.

Trained personnel will assist you with all the necessary requirements, procedures, and medical documentation needed and answer all your dialysis-related questions.

These companies will be able to book your cruise for you, as well as flights and anything else that’s needed.

It’s always a good idea to consult your medical team at home before traveling. They will be able to raise any concerns that they have about your health and/or help you to organize what you need for the trip.

Cruise Ship Dialysis Documentation

If having dialysis on a cruise, you may need to bring additional documentation.

For specific requirements, you will need to check with the provider through whom you book, but some examples of documents the company may require for entry onto the ship include:

• Your last three treatment sheets
• Current medication sheet
• EKG tracings

It is essential to book as far in advance as possible. Dialysis appointments and cabins are somewhat limited. Dialysis at Sea, for example, accepts a maximum of twelve patients per cruise.

Flying to The Cruise Port

People with peritoneal dialysis machines are usually able to bring these as a carry-on. According to FAA rules, this does not count against your carry-on limit, and your bags will be priorities over other passengers. If you are bringing a hemodialysis machine, it must be checked into the hold of the plane. It should not count as extra baggage or come with additional charges. However, your machine must meet the airline’s weight limits. You are also allowed to transport syringes and dialysis fluids, but you will need to bring proper documentation. It’s also a good idea to ask for preboarding if possible.

How is Dialysis on a Cruise Ship Charged?

Medical Services

Should a guest require medical attention while aboard one of our vessels, the Medical Center staff is available to assist 24 hours a day. The on board medical centers are staffed and equipped to treat routine medical conditions as well as to initiate stabilization of more serious conditions. Physicians are available to render services at a customary fee. While at sea or in port, the availability of medical care may be limited.

Medical Center Hours The Medical Center has daily office hours which are listed in the HUB App. The medical staff is on call 24 hours a day for emergencies. Routine hours are subject to temporary change due to extenuating circumstances: 

• Embarkation day: 8:00am-9:00am and 3:00pm-5:00pm
• Sea days: 9:00am-12:00pm and 3:00pm-6:00pm
• Port days: 8:00am-10:00am and 4:00pm-6:00pm

A charge for medical services will be billed to the guest's Sail & Sign® Account and a receipt will be provided for the guest to submit to their medical insurance provider upon return for possible reimbursement.

The physicians on board are independent contractors and are entitled to render services at a customary fee which may vary from ship to ship based on the time of day. The basic fee does NOT include medication, tests or treatment. 

Note: Guests who purchased  Carnival Vacation Protection™  may be eligible for reimbursement of up to $10,000 for covered medical-related expenses and up to $30,000 for necessary Emergency Medical Evacuation expenses should they become ill or injured or require medical evacuation while on their cruise vacation. The medical benefits are secondary to coverage the guest may have through their regular health insurance provider(s). Medication Over-the-Counter medications for cold, cough, upset stomach or other minor illnesses can be purchased at the Medical Center during business hours. In addition, the shops on board may carry some of these items. Prescription drugs and vitamins may not be readily available, either on board the ship or in the ports. 

Meclizine, motion sickness pills can be purchased at the Medical Center, Guest Services or through Room Service. The cost is $3.29 USD for four pills. We do not carry motion sickness patches or wristbands. A motion sickness injection is available for a fee at the Medical Center but will only be administered to those who are actively vomiting and not as a preventative measure.

Diabetes/Medicine Storage

Staterooms on a number of  ships are equipped with  non-stocked mini bar units which are designed to maintain the temperature of beverages. Please do not use them to store medications that have specific temperature requirements. Should you need to store medicine that needs proper refrigeration, medi-coolers are available on board in limited quantities, and on a first come, first serve basis - please visit our Guest Services Desk once on board; a $75 refundable deposit is required. If a medi-cooler is not available, our ship’s Medical Center will arrange storage - please contact them once on board. Note: A small, personal-sized cooler no larger than 12” x 12” x 12” for the purpose of housing medications is permitted as carry-on luggage. 

Medical Staffing and Equipment  In order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for our guests, our medical centers meet or exceed the standards established by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

Our medical centers are staffed by qualified physicians and nurses who are committed to providing the highest quality of shipboard medical care. Medical staffing is correlated to the size of the ship and varies from one physician and three nurses to as many as two physicians and five nurses.

Ship’s physicians meet or exceed the credentialing guidelines established by the cruise ship medicine section of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). In addition, doctors must demonstrate competent skill levels and hold current certification in basic and advanced cardiac life support and cardiac care, have experience in general medicine or general practice including emergency or critical care, and have one to three years clinical experience and minor surgical skills, and board or similar international certification is preferred. The doctors on board are independent contractors.

Shipboard medical facilities are set up to provide reasonable emergency medical care for guests and crew. In cases of extreme emergency where more comprehensive facilities are required, patients are referred to shoreside facilities.

In addition to standard lifesaving equipment such as defibrillators and external pacemakers, our medical centers carry some of the latest in medical technology including thrombolytic therapy, electrocardiograph machines, lab equipment, pulse oximetry and x-ray machines on many of our ships.

Dialysis on Carnival cruise ships

my good friend just got put on dialysis and he supposed to be cruising on the Carnival breeze next July. Does any of Carnival's ships have a dialysis unit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this isn't much help as I overhead a conversation while standing at Guest Services but they do offer something. I couldn't help overhearing a conversation of it being scheduled for a passenger. Don't know any details!

I have heard of it being on some cruise ships, but I dont know if Carnival is one of them. Did you check on Carnival's website. There is a search section for FAQ's. Barring that, then a call to Carnival's 1.800 number or contact their special services dept. Or, hopefully someone will post who has specific knowledge.

Before my dad passed 8 years ago, I scheduled him to cruise with us. At the time, the Carnival ships did not have dialysis onboard. I had to schedule dialysis at port. Since you are never guaranteed to arrive at a port, I had to schedule the dialysis at two ports even though he only needed one treatment that week. (He was treated before we left and the day we returned. It was a 5 night cruise.) This required sending copies of his medical records ahead of time to both facilities (Nassau and Grand Turk). He ended up having his dialysis done at Grand Turk. Carnival offered him transportation to and from the dialysis facility. The nurses at Grand Turk were wonderful to him and my mom. I then called the facility at Nassau and cancelled his appointment. They were aware it could be cancelled. It has to be scheduled ahead of time to be sure they have a bed for the patient.

Please feel free to ask me anything. It was a long time ago, but since I am the one who scheduled it, I remember a lot of it.

Check out "Dialysis at Sea". They do cruises on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity that offer dialysis. As far as I know Carnival does not. When we took my dad on a cruise to Canada on a Carnival ship we had to make arrangements at one of the Canadian ports for him to have his dialysis done. Carnival did arrange the transportation to and from the hospital. We also had to pay up front the cost of the dialysis and then get reimbursed from the insurance company.

If the latter, while your friend will have to use his cabin to treat himself, Carnival will assist in storing or accepting early the meds he needs. But check the information on site.

What ports are on the itinerary? Maybe someone on here has knowledge or used a clinic in one of the ports and can share info.

Yes, self dialysis. There was a recent thread on this and getting supplies on board etc.

I just used the search button at the top of this page and there are numerous threads to read.

I did a cruise while I was in peritoneal dialysis. It was on NCL but could have been in any ship. I carried my supplies on with me and the ships crew were awesome to me. I did have to meet with the environmental officer for specific instructions to dispose of my fluids.

It can be done and can be fun. I don't know about hemodialysis in a cruise though.

Dialysis at sea is the only option....the ship does NOT have facilities for that.

I would hope the admins would not get upset with me mentioning them since this is where I first learned about them. They have been mentioned on the disabled cruise forums too.

Dialysis at sea is not offered through Carnival. My sister is on Dialysis and just recently inquired . It can be quite expensive as previously stated you have to book through them and pay everything up front , including your dialysis. All insurance companies do not reimburse ... so it would be a good idea to check to find out if your particular insurance will. The cost is $500.00 plus per dialysis treatment and must be paid in advance.
