Tips and Challenges of Keeping Kosher While Traveling
Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .
Imagine walking down the bustling streets of Bangkok , past street food vendors hawking their wares and delectable smells wafting your way. You're wondering what the perfect #foodporn picture would be for posting on Instagram when you realize that, wait a minute, you keep kosher. So you just keep on walking…
A good deal of travel requires immersing yourself in local cultures — what's better than diving your face into a steaming bowl of Pad Thai? Well, when you are a traveler with dietary restrictions, there are logistical challenges. With that in mind, here are some tips that can make kosher travel abroad experiences more satisfying:
1. Skip the Airline Kosher Meal and Bring Your Own
Airlines are delightful in so many ways — sometimes they even drag you off a plane or ask you to pee in a cup — but they do offer an extensive list of special meals. Every major airline offers a kosher option, known in aviation parlance as KSML, except one: Hawaiian Airlines. But its flight attendants were incredibly hospitable and happy to improvise on the fly.
Recently, I shared the experience of a family bound for South Africa on a 16-hour flight without their Kosher meals. No one wants to be in that situation, which is why you should always bring a back-up . You must assume you won't find anything else to eat on the plane once you've taken off. Sure, this means you'll need to plan ahead and make some to-go meals, but nothing is better than a home-cooked meal at 36,000 feet.
2. Do Your Research, and Do It Again
When planning a trip, we pour over reviews and scour the internet to plan every step of what we're going to do and when. When traveling kosher, you need to do the same for your food. The single best source for finding out about kosher options abroad is Chabad.org, a global organization with more than 3,500 institutions worldwide. Often times, the local Chabad institution will have its own restaurant or meals and will usually have a page on its site dedicated to keeping kosher in that locale.
After you've found your restaurant, be sure to look it up online as well. Sometimes the restaurants will list their opening and closing times, but it's important to contact that establishment and confirm that information. Many restaurant websites are in foreign languages and sometimes Google translate just doesn't cut it! By calling or emailing, you can be sure to cut down on some of the confusion as there's little worse than getting to your oasis of kosher in a food desert only to find that restaurant closed — trust me, I know from experience.
3. When in Rome: Eat Like the Locals
You've got through your 14-hour flight to Tokyo, found the local kosher restaurant, but still feel left out? In certain places, you can eat like the locals. For example, finding noodles and hot water is a pretty easy task in many Asian countries. Some of the most durable kosher products that don't require refrigeration and are easy to store include soup cups (of all flavors and varieties); all you need is some hot water.
4. It Never Hurts to Ask
In my travels, I've found that most people I've interacted with at grocery stores and food establishments have been extremely accommodating to answering (seemingly) odd questions about ingredients in the food and letting me see the packaging to identify kosher symbols.
While it may feel like you're inconveniencing others when you ask, there's a learning experience and exchange of information which occurs. Explaining what kosher is to the flight attendants on my Hawaiian Airlines flight definitely had its humorous moments, but it also made for a more enjoyable and satiating flight.
5. Mini-Fridge? Microwave? There May Be A Charge for That — Unless You Ask!
During a recent stay at The Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island of Hawaii, I requested a mini-fridge and microwave to store and warm up the food I brought with me, arranging this beforehand — remember: planning! — so I'd be all set to go at check-in. The front desk agent did inform me, however, that there would be an additional fee involved for using them. While many hotels will provide these two items for free, note that some do charge. Upon check-out, though, I was informed that I had been erroneously charged and that due to "medical or dietary restrictions," the hotel would not charge those fees. So, not only did I make some money back, I also learned a valuable lesson about keeping kosher while traveling: always ask.
6. Have Hotel Status? It Can Get You Kosher Food, Too
One of the best benefits to hotel credit cards and premium cards like The Platinum Card from American Express and The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN is that they both offer free hotel elite status . Not all elite status is created equal, but one of the best mid-tier ones is Hilton Honors Gold , which offers complimentary breakfast.
I reached out to the concierge at the hotel and was pleasantly surprised when they said they'd provide a kosher breakfast at no additional cost. Note that Hyatt properties in Hawaii have been known to provide kosher breakfast to their Globalist members as well. Be sure to email or call the property you plan to visit at least three to four weeks before your arrival so the staff can work to accommodate your request.
7. Find the 'American Aisle' at a Grocery Store
While the prices for products in the US-brand food aisles will most certainly cost twice as much as local ones, the US foods section is often your best bet for finding generic kosher items.
Let's talk about chocolate — because who doesn't love it? When purchased in the United States, Kit Kat, for example, bears the symbol for kosher certification. That same brand of food outside of the US may not have that required kosher symbol. Unfortunately, this means you usually can't just pick up a candy bar from the local bodega or supermarket. You can, however, head over to the US food aisle, where you can locate US-made products with kosher symbols such as soda, candy bars and cereals.
8. Bring Food With You — and Pack it Right
Most importantly, you will need to bring food with you — how much and what will depend on the length of your trip, the amount of people in your group and what you usually enjoy. For lighter meals, stick with high protein snacks like nuts, granola, whole wheat breads, tuna and peanut butter since they're filling, affordable and easy to store and travel with. For larger meals, there are several supermarkets and restaurants in cities like New York and Los Angeles — that have large kosher-keeping populations — which provide freshly-made (but frozen) meals. They will also pack the food for you in an insulated, airplane-ready box.
To accommodate kosher travelers, one of the most popular supermarkets on the east coast, Pomegranate , a kosher supermarket in Brooklyn , will put together fresh meals that are airplane-ready. It's known for its fair pricing, portion sizes and the quality of the food. I strongly recommend asking the folks there to pack the food in an airline-ready box — and check that box as a piece of luggage. Having done this on several occasions, my airplane-ready box has arrived at my destination many hours away unscathed and still frozen.
Bottom Line
While it isn't easy to plan for all your meals and snacks — especially if you're traveling with a large group — it isn't impossible. With the tips above, you'll be on your way to an easier and more fulfilling travel experience.

Tip 3: Pack Wisely.
When it comes to packing for a kosher journey, a little extra planning can go a long way.
- Kosher Kitchen Supplies: When preparing for your journey, it’s important to think about bringing along crucial kitchen equipment designed for kosher cooking. This includes kosher cookware like pots and pans, as well as appropriate utensils and a cutting board.
- Non-Perishable Foods: Additionally, it’s worth emphasizing the significance of packing non-perishable kosher food items, as they can prove to be incredibly convenient during your travels. Include items like kosher snacks, instant soups, and canned goods that are easy to transport.
- Travel-Friendly Utensils: Bring along travel-sized kosher utensils, such as a knife, fork, and spoon, for use when dining at restaurants or cafes.
- Kosher Labels: Attach kosher labels to your containers and utensils to prevent any mix-ups or confusion while on the go.
- Food Storage: Invest in high-quality, airtight food containers to keep your homemade kosher meals fresh during your travels.
- Portable Kitchen Appliances: If you have specific dietary needs, portable appliances like a hot plate or an electric kettle can be handy for heating or cooking kosher food in your hotel room.
Tip 4: Dining Out with Confidence.
While traveling, you’ll likely want to experience the local cuisine. Enjoying a meal while dining out can certainly enhance your journey, provided you approach it with confidence in your kosher selections.
- Researching Restaurants: Prior to venturing out to dine, conduct a brief online search to locate kosher restaurants in the vicinity. Examine customer reviews and ratings to ensure they align with your kosher requirements.
- Inquire About Kosher Certification: Upon your arrival at a restaurant, don’t hesitate to inquire with the staff about their kosher certification. Look for visible certificates or symbols that denote their adherence to kosher standards.
- Effective Communication: If you encounter a language barrier, utilize the kosher phrases you’ve acquired to effectively convey your dietary needs. Utilizing straightforward expressions like “I observe kosher” or “Is this food item kosher?” can greatly aid in communication.
- Lean Towards Vegetarian Options: In many non-kosher dining establishments, vegetarian dishes tend to be more accommodating to kosher dietary restrictions. Contemplating selections devoid of meat or dairy components is a prudent choice.
- Minimize Cross-Contamination Concerns: If you harbor concerns regarding cross-contamination, kindly request that your meal be prepared separately or inquire about the availability of dedicated kosher cooking utensils.
- Prioritize Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Opting for fresh fruits and vegetables is often a safe choice, provided they have not undergone processing with non-kosher equipment.
- Be Prepared: In the event that you are unable to locate a suitable restaurant, ensure you have portable kosher snacks or meals readily available to prevent hunger pangs from spoiling your dining experience.
Tip 5: Explore Kosher Food Delivery
In the contemporary digital era, obtaining kosher food has never been more accessible. Numerous urban centers now provide kosher meal delivery services, affording you the opportunity to relish delectable kosher cuisine right in the coziness of your hotel room or holiday accommodation.
- Online Platforms: Explore popular food delivery apps and websites that feature kosher restaurants in your destination. Ordering online is a hassle-free way to have kosher meals delivered to your doorstep.
- Delivery Zones: Check the delivery zones of kosher restaurants to ensure they can deliver to your location.
- Custom Orders: Most delivery services allow you to customize your order, specifying your dietary preferences and any additional requests you may have.
- Advance Planning: To avoid waiting for food to be delivered when you’re hungry, plan your meals in advance and place your orders accordingly.
- Delivery Fees: Be aware of any delivery fees or minimum order requirements. Factor these into your budget when ordering.
- Review Menus: Carefully review the menus of the kosher restaurants available for delivery, ensuring they offer a variety of options that cater to your tastes.
Tip 6: Be Mindful of Travel Restrictions.
Traveling internationally or to certain destinations may involve customs and security restrictions that affect your kosher journey.
- Travel with Pre-Packaged Kosher Food: Some countries have strict regulations regarding the import of food items. To avoid any issues, travel with pre-packaged kosher food that complies with local customs rules.
- Declare Your Food: If you’re carrying kosher food with you, declare it to customs officials when entering a new country.
- Research Local Customs: Prior to your trip, research the customs regulations of your destination to ensure you’re aware of any restrictions or prohibitions on specific kosher items.
- Consult with Authorities: If you have any doubts about bringing certain kosher items into a country, consult with the local customs or embassy for guidance.
Tip 7: Embrace the Adventure.
Finally, it’s essential to keep in mind that kosher travel encompasses more than just culinary experiences—it’s a holistic adventure filled with exploration and the opportunity to create lasting memories.
- Flexibility: While maintaining your kosher dietary observance is important, be flexible when necessary. Some destinations may not offer a wide range of kosher options, so adapt and make the best choices available.
- Memorable Experiences: Focus on creating memorable experiences that go beyond food. Explore the beauty of nature, engage in local customs, and make new friends along the way.
- Share Your Journey: Document your kosher travel experiences through photos, videos, or a travel journal. Share your adventures with friends and family to inspire them to embark on their own kosher journeys.
- Stay Positive: If you encounter challenges, approach them with a positive attitude. Problem-solving can be part of the adventure, and you’ll come out stronger and more resourceful.

Kosher travel, don’t go on a kosher vacation without reading these tips.
Is going on a vacation while keeping kosher difficult? That need not be the case. It’s all about understanding the options available to you and proper planning. The easiest option would be to choose a kosher program where your every whim and need is catered to by the organiser. From kosher food and minyanim to a resident scholar or rabbi on the premises. Especially when traveling over shabbes or yom tov, choosing a kosher provider is the easiest option. Challah, shabbat candles, besamim, and much more … the tour operator or hotel will take care of it all! And obviously, these locations will offer a host of services such as children’s programs, tours and visits and more. Of course, this comes at a premium cost. Furthermore, you are limited to those locations and specific dates where a kosher program is active.
The advantage of Jewish hotels is not only that they provide kosher meals (obviously the main attraction) but also a host of services catering to the religious traveler such as access to rooms with mechanical keys or override systems for shabbat, synagogue services on the premises, shabbat elevators and religious accessories and items such as Havdalah and Friday night candles.
In the US and Canada, kosher programs seem to focus mainly on the holiday periods. The most popular being Pesach, Passover with over 100 kosher programs followed by Sukkot and the winter holidays. European providers are active year round but the locations do very based on the time of the year. From Pesach to Sukkot you will find many kosher hotel programs in the South of Europe such as Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Cyprus. Winter time sees hotels opening on or near the ski slopes of France, Austria and Switzerland. Of course, in a category of it’s own you find Israel which is a kosher holiday destination at any time of year. Even in winter times, the Dead Sea region and Eilat in the South of the country, offer a pleasant weather climate. New on the Jewish travel destination map are Morocco and Dubai, Arab countries that recently signed peace agreements with Israel. However, beware of the hot temperatures in the summer. More exotic locations can be visited by cruise or kosher tour.
A second option is to find a kosher rental and either prepare your own food or go out to eat locally. Proper planning is crucial to make these holidays a success. Find out what kosher utensils are available in the rental, how far kosher stores are located and whether you need to book restaurants in that area or not. Make a list of synagogues and Jewish institutions before you leave as this can come in handy before you leave.
Another important area to consider when booking a kosher hotel is the prices offered. Make sure to inquire if extra charges apply such as tips and taxes and what the cost would be for extra’s such as a ‘private seder room’ for pessach, for example. Many programs are eager to fill up early and offer early bird specials so make sure to check them out. The same goes for last-minute deals but beware as favorite hotels might be sold out and flights unavailable or very expensive. When traveling with children some hotels will offer discounts for children staying in the parents’ room. In most cases flights are not included but usually these can be arranged for you by the hotelier.
How to find the best holiday for you? Looking between thousands of options is never easy. That is the reason why we launched our site, gokosher.com. Unlike other kosher travel website, who work on a commercial basis, our site is free which means all kosher travel providers are featured. Furthermore, with an easy filter system you can select on type of vacation, time frame and geographic location.

Kosher travel meals: a complete guide of options.
Whether you are getting away for Yeshiva Break, escaping the next “polar vortex”, getting away for Pesach, or just taking a weekend getaway with your significant other, we wanted to help all the would be vacation-ers out by providing a list of all of the available On-The-Go kosher meals to make your holidays that much easier!
We’ve categorized the meals into 4 categories:
- Shelf-stable meals
- Supermarket-made meals
- Caterer-made meals
- Restaurant-made meals
For options 2-4 I advise ordering at least 2+ days in advance so they have time to deep freeze your meals. Deep freezing your meals will allow you to travel with them cross-country or overseas, even during the summer, so the meals will remain frozen until you arrive at your destination.

About the author.
Of the three you reviewed that are available through Amazon, which do you think tastes best?
Bethany, Talia reviewed only that last one. I’ve tried the La Briute ones, they were OK, felt like I needed more.
Dear Dani, When catering. Can a non-Jewish delivery service transport Kosher food to the destination and still be considered kosher. For example the companies that handle the logistics for airline food? Or kosher catering service that makes kosher food but does not do it’s own logistics
Hi Dave, sorry for the late response. A non-Jewish delivery service CAN transport a kosher supervised meal, however the meal typically has a double/triple seal that is placed around the item before it is sent out for delivery.
The Abigael’s link is dead!
While travelling, I usually prefer to eat fish. Preserved/canned fish seems to be an easy choice, even though there used to be issues regarding the handling of the fish aboard the vessels turning it into non-kosher but it’s not so common anymore.
Do any companies have shelf-stable (vacuum packed) challah or pita for hamotzei. Matzah is difficult because it breaks so easily when traveling, and defeats the purpose. ideas?

Restaurants, food and drink | bill walton, hall of fame player who became a star broadcaster, dies of cancer at 71, restaurants, food and drink, restaurants, food and drink | tastefood: move the meal outdoors with this easy greek dinner.
A zesty marinade and creamy tzatziki do the heavy lifting in this recipe, infusing the chicken with juicy flavor, lemony citrus and a kick of spice. Cutting the chicken in chunks and threading them on skewers provides more surface area for the meat to soak in the marinade and creates lots of little edges to crisp while grilling. Tzatziki, a garlicky Greek yogurt-and-cucumber sauce, provides a slick of creaminess to the chicken and pita.
While you can stuff the ingredients into pita pockets, you can also eat them deconstructed. Simply assemble everything on a bed of crisp greens and call it a salad for dinner. If you have a grill, use it to cook the chicken and warm the pita. It’s nearly summer, so now is the time to move the living outdoors.
Greek Chicken Pita Pockets
Ingredients.
2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut in 2-inch pieces
Butter lettuce leaves
2 vine-ripened tomatoes, sliced
1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced
Fresh mint leaves
Pita bread, grilled or warmed
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
3 garlic cloves, minced or pushed through a press
Juice of one lemon
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1¼ cups whole-milk Greek yogurt
1/2 English cucumber, seeded, finely diced
2 garlic cloves, minced or pushed through a press
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill fronds
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Combine the marinade ingredients in a large bowl. Add the chicken and turn to coat. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 6 hours.
Combine the tzatziki ingredients in a bowl and refrigerate until use.
If using bamboo skewers, pre-soak them in warm water for 30 minutes.
Prepare the grill for direct cooking over medium heat. Lightly oil the grill grates. Grill the skewers over direct heat until the chicken is cooked through the center and well-marked, turning once or twice, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the grill and let rest for 2 to 3 minutes. If using an oven, heat to 425 degrees. Arrange the skewers on a rack placed over a rimmed baking sheet. Roast until golden brown in spots and cooked through the centers, turning once, about 25 minutes.
Slide the chicken off the skewers onto a serving platter. Serve the chicken with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, mint leaves, pita bread and the tzatziki sauce.
