1. annie leibovitz (1949-).

If you’ve ever wondered, “Who is the most famous female photographer?” , Annie Leibovitz is likely to be the answer.

Over an illustrious career spanning more than five decades, Leibovitz has photographed everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Queen Elizabeth II.

Even if you don’t know her by name, you’ve undoubtedly seen her work. Think Demi Moore, very pregnant and very nude, in her then-controversial, now iconic cover for Vanity Fair.

Or that unforgettable image of a naked John Lennon wrapped around Yoko Ono, taken on the very day he was shot down and killed.

And that’s just to name a few.

Besides her captivating celebrity portraits, Leibovitz has photographed countless fashion editorials for magazines like Vogue. In these, Leibovitz turns supermodels into fantasy figures, often borrowing from fairytales, historical stories and classic paintings to bring her photographic vision to life.

Leibovitz was born in 1949 in Connecticut, USA, and got her big start in 1970 when she landed a job as a portrait photographer for  Rolling Stone  magazine.

2. Vivian Maier (1926-2009)

Vivian Maier’s incredible street photography gives us a detailed glimpse into the life that was buzzing around her. Most famously, she captured street scenes in Chicago and New York during the 1950s and ’60s.

This cemented her name as one of the most famous women photographers in the world.

One of the unique things about Maier’s incredible story is that her thousands of images went unpublished and unknown during her lifetime.

Photography was a passion for Maier, who worked for around 40 years as a nanny while shooting pictures as a side project.

It was only in 2009, just after her death, that digitized photos shared on Flickr went viral and Maier became a certifiable street photography sensation.

3. Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976)

This American female photographer is best known for three things: her detailed and sharply-focused botanical photographs, her intimate nudes, and her industrial landscapes.

Cunningham also took many well-known portraits of celebrities and artists, especially during the 1930s when she worked for Vanity Fair. Her portraiture is prized for its intimacy and intensity.

Cunningham was an influential member of the f/64 photography group, alongside the likes of Ansel Adams – a group known for its attention to detail and sharp focusing on simple subjects.

4. Nan Goldin (1953-)

Nan Goldin is one of the most famous female photographers to tackle difficult themes like the HIV crisis and the opioid epidemic.

She’s also known for exploring, in a raw and intimate way, sexual moments and LGBT bodies. These themes are encapsulated by her most important body of work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, shot between 1979 and 1986.

As she once said, “I knew from a very early age that what I saw on TV had nothing to do with real life. So I wanted to make a record of real life. That included having a camera with me at all times.”

5. Dorothea Lange (1895-1965)

This powerhouse is one of the best female photographers in history.

Dorothea Lange was an American documentary photographer and photojournalist.

During the Great Depression, she worked for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) capturing the trials and hardships of working-class people as they went about daily life.

What makes her such an icon among women photographers is that her images are so etched with emotion. In a single frame, Lange could tell a heart-rending story about the life of her subjects.

Her most famous work,  Migrant Mother , which shows a downtrodden mother and her two young children, is a perfect example of this.

6. Diane Arbus (1923-1971)

Diane Arbus isn’t just an important female photographer – she’s one of the most important Post-Modern American photographers full stop.

Arbus’ images are credited with helping to normalize those at the fringes of society. She often focused on marginalized subjects like circus performers, transgender people, dwarfs, and the mentally ill.

This talented female photographer sadly took her own life at the age of 48, but not before leaving an indelible mark on the photography world.

7. Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971)

In the world of documentary photography , Margaret Bourke-White is certainly a female photographer that stands out.

She was the first woman photographer to work for LIFE Magazine, and the first known female war correspondent allowed to work in combat zones during World War II.

In 1946, LIFE Magazine commissioned her to cover the liberation of the Hindus, during which time she shot her famous image of Gandhi at the spinning wheel.

Margaret Bourke-White will long be remembered as a pioneering American photographer and the first photojournalist to open doors for women photographers to enter the field.

8. Gerda Taro (1910-1937)

Gerda Taro also sits among the world’s famous female photographers for her contribution to photojournalism.

This brave female photographer has an unfortunate yet highly dignified claim to fame: she’s known as the first woman photojournalist to have died while covering the frontline in a war.

Taro learned her craft from her lover and professional partner, renowned photographer Robert Capa.

Though Taro’s career was sadly cut short, her black and white photographs depicting the difficult, fleeting moments of war continue to inspire new generations of women photographers today.

9. Lee Miller (1907-1977)

American photographer Lee Miller was known for being a fashion model and the lover of artist Man Ray.

Nonetheless, it was her documentary images of a war-ravaged Europe after World War II that earned her a strong reputation and a place among the world’s famous female photographers.

Miller’s photos of the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps formed some of the first photographic evidence of the horrors of the holocaust.

She’s also known for her intimate artistic relationship with Pablo Picasso: she photographed him more than 1,000 times and he, in turn, painted her portrait six times.

10. Sally Mann (1951-)

Sally Mann can easily be counted among the most famous female photographers who are still alive today.

Mann is known for centering on her own family as primary subjects. In the 1990s, she released a series of images featuring her own young children in intimate, often vulnerable poses.

The series became highly controversial, yet their evocative beauty and unique perspective on childhood are undeniable.

Best known for her large-format black and white portrait photographs , Mann has also produced many landscape photography works.

11. Corinne Day (1962-2010)

When Corrine Day photographed a completely unknown freckle-faced teen from Croydon, England, no one could have anticipated just how iconic the images would become.

The model was Kate Moss, and it was Day’s portraits of her that would pioneer a new kind of beauty and shift the fashion world’s focus away from the glossy and glamorous to something more gritty and real.

It was also the moment that cemented Day’s future as one of the most respected and famous female photographers.

Day later moved on from fashion and turned her hand to documentary photography. A prime example is her book “Diary”, which features candid, intimate portraiture of her friends that show the reality of drug-taking.

Corrine Day sadly died at age 48 from a brain tumour.

12. Martine Franck (1938-2012)

Belgian-born Martine Franck was a female photographer who worked mostly as a portrait and documentary photographer. She created striking and emotive compositions that strongly focused on shape and form .

Throughout her career, Franck worked for major publications like LIFE, Vogue and Fortune.

The second wife of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Franck was a member of Magnum Photos for over 32 years and one of the few female photographers to be represented by the agency at the time.

Franck preferenced a 35-millimetre Leica camera with black and white film for her elegant and memorable photographs.

13. Gisèle Freund (1908-2000)

Born in Berlin in 1908, Gisèle Freund would go on to become one of the most prominent female photographers in Europe.

Throughout her career, she embarked on around 80 photographic assignments around the world – mostly for LIFE and Time magazine – and earned her living as a highly successful photojournalist.

She was the only female founding member of the Magnum photo agency.

Despite her photojournalistic prowess, it was Freund’s portrait photography that would cement her as one of the most famous female photographers in the world.

Freund captured portraits of the giants of the art and literary world, including James Joyce, Vladimir Nabokov, Evita Perón, Frida Kahlo and Aldous Huxley.

She also shot the first colour portraits of Simone de Beauvoir, Virginia Woolf, André Breton and others.

Freund’s portraits are deeply inspiring because they often defy convention, focusing on revealing the essence of the subject. She also took some unique self-portraits.

Living for almost a century, Freund created an impressive body of work and witnessed the development of photography as an art .

Her contributions to the art form have cemented her name as one of the most famous female photographers of the 21st century.

14. Tina Mondotti (1896-1942)

Italian photographer Tina Mondotti wore many hats: she was also a model, actress and revolutionary political activist.

After relocating to Mexico in 1922, she became deeply immersed in Mexican culture and politics, and the evolution of her political ideas made a strong impression on her photographs.

Some of Mondotti’s recurring subjects were people of the working class, scenes depicting indigenous culture, folk art and landscapes.

She also took photographs of well-known intellectuals and artists, most notably Frida Kahlo.

Modotti was exiled from Mexico in 1930 due to her prominence in the communist movement and her work in photography soon after ceased.

Throughout her somewhat short but vibrant life, Mondotti left a strong imprint as an influential female photographer.

15. Eve Arnold (1912-2012)

American photographer Eve Arnold is known for capturing images of some of the most famous and glamorous subjects in the world – Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe among them.

However, she didn’t only photograph portraits of the rich and famous, despite the success this brought her. She also took incredible photos of the poor, the old, the commonplace, the unglamorous… and did so in a way that not many photographers have been able to replicate.

Arnold is known for becoming the first woman to join the Magnum Photo Agency, and for being one of the female photographers of her time to really explore ideas and issues about women in her work. Her work is what made her one of the most famous woman photographers in history.

She died in 2012 at age 99.

Famous Contemporary Female Photographers to Follow

German-born Ellen von Unwerth is arguably the most famous female photographer in the field of fashion (say that five times fast!).

As an editorial photographer, she’s produced countless shoots for magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Interview.

Von Unwerth’s style is distinct: her glamorous, colorful images highlight the female form in playful and erotic ways.

I’ve always loved to portray women who are strong, who are playful, who are self-assured, and who really own their sexuality. — Ellen von Unwerth

While not all female photographers would approach capturing images of women in an overtly sexualised way, von Unwerth’s perspective as a woman shines through and her models often say they feel empowered rather than exploited.

Ellen von Unwerth’s career took off after she took photographs of supermodel Claudia Schiffer in 1989.

Since then she’s photographed countless celebrities and models, many of them notable women: Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kate Moss, Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Gisele Bundchen among them.

2. Ming Smith

Born in Detroit in 1947, Ming Smith rose to prominence in the 1970s for being part of the influential Kamoinge collective of black photographers.

Throughout her career, she’s photographed a number of important black cultural figures, including women like Nina Simone, Grace Jones and Tina Turner.

In 1978, she became the first-ever female African American photographer to have her work acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Smith’s style, largely black and white, is candid, unassuming and undeniably beautiful.

She works with various techniques – both in-camera techniques like slow shutter speeds and deliberate plays with focus, and darkroom techniques like double exposure . She’s also known for mixing mediums, adding to her images with hand-tinting, painting and collage.

Still active and with new books and exhibitions on the horizon, Ming Smith is definitely one female photographer to check out.

3. Lynsey Addario

This Pulitzer prize-winning photojournalist is a female force to be reckoned with, throughout her career taking on the brave task of covering conflicts from the front line. Earning a reputation of being one of the most notable names among modern female photographers.

Often commissioned to shoot in places that are particularly risky for a woman, Addario hasn’t put down her camera despite being kidnapped twice.

Even while taking on one of the photography world’s most dangerous jobs , Addario is known for her ability to find beauty in the harshest of places.

Her images of war often juxtapose a harrowing subject matter with a considered and aesthetically-pleasing style of composition. Addario says this is her way of getting people to engage with the photos rather than turning away from difficult subjects.

If you want to be inspired by female photographers working in the field of photojournalism, Lynsey Addario is definitely one to follow.

4. Hoda Afshar

Iranian-born Hoda Afshar is a well-known female photographer now working out of Melbourne, Australia.

In 2006, the prestigious World Press Photo named her as one of the top ten young photographers in Iran.

As an accomplished female portrait photographer, she went on to win the 2015 National Portrait Prize and the 2018 Bowness Photography Prize. In 2021, her photo series on Australian whistleblowers won the People’s Choice Award at the Ramsay Art Awards.

Her photos have been shown in numerous exhibitions and are held in various permanent collections across Australia.

Works created by Afshar often blur the line between what’s real and conceptual – a method she calls “staged documentary”, and her work is known for challenging assumptions, exploring difficult topics, and bringing hard truths to light in a creative and often beautiful way.

5. Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman is considered one of the most renowned and important female photographers and feminist photographers working today.

She’s known for using her art as a form of social criticism and for challenging notions of identity through her many self-portraits.

In her self-portraits, Sherman often uses obvious prosthetics and visible makeup to transform herself into a variety of different characters. In doing this, she prompts the viewer to question our process of building an identity.

As the Museum of Modern Art puts it, “Sherman subverts the visual shorthand we use to classify the world around us, drawing attention to the artificiality and ambiguity of these stereotypes.”

While some of Sherman’s invented characters and scenes are glamorous and beautiful, she’s also well known for exploring, through her portraits, subjects that are uncomfortable and grotesque.

Her highly unique style, thought-provoking images, and ability to perform both behind and in front of the camera, make Cindy Sherman a true game-changer of the photography world.

6. Bella Kotak

One look at Bella Kotak’s work and you’ll immediately see why she’s social media famous. Her images are rich, fantastical, dream-inducing; each one a work of art in its own right.

Kotak is known for creating lush fantasy worlds within her works, where models are transformed into strong female characters – goddesses, witches, queens and warrior women – using a combination of impeccable styling and artistic post-production.

She started her career journey in arts and architecture before falling into fine art photography . She now lives and works between the US and UK.

She’s also photographed many advertising campaigns for major fashion and beauty brands.

Some of her most well-known images are of famous women like Naomi Campbell and Carla Bruni, whom she has masterfully captured in spontaneous and candid moments.

Inspiration 20 Travel Photographers You Should Know

Intrepid and visionary, photographers have long ventured forth to document their journeys and capture the essence of the places they explore. In celebration of our 2023 Travel Photography Award , (open for entries until the end of August) we’ve curated a list of 20 photographers, past and present, whose inspiring images embody the unique allure of travel.

1. Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry , the esteemed judge of our current Travel Award , is a globally-renowned figure in the world of photography. His remarkable oeuvre encompasses some of the most iconic images of our time and showcases the awe-inspiring beauty and cultural diversity of our planet.

Born in Philadelphia in 1950, McCurry studied cinematography at Pennsylvania State University, after which he worked as a staff photographer for the local newspaper Today’s Post . However, driven by his passion for travel and photography, he embarked on a journey to India, a country that would become synonymous with his name due to the stunning images he captured throughout his career. It was this inaugural trip that sparked the epiphanic realization, “if you wait, people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view”, setting the foundation for a remarkable career and some truly captivating images encompassing every corner of the globe.

2. Inge Morath

One of the most influential photographers in the history of the medium, Inge Morath travelled extensively throughout her career, forming close relationships with the places she visited through her absolute immersion in the local culture. The remarkable images she captured, display her wonderful artistry and serve as fascinating mementos of their time, whilst demonstrating the profound potential of color photography long before it gained widespread acceptance.

3. Michael Yamashita

Few photographers convey the sheer joy of travel like Michael Yamashita . Over the past three decades, he has embarked on a journey around the world, capturing breathtaking images of its landscapes and people.

Though, throughout his career, Yamashita has photographed on six different continents, it is his work in Asia that has become particularly renowned. With an Asian Studies major from Wesleyan University and Japanese heritage, Yamashita has become an expert in the region and has photographed extensively in China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and India, capturing images that articulately convey the cultural diversity and stunning beauty of this fascinating continent.

4. Denis Dailleux

Though he has photographed various locations, Denis Dailleux is inseparably linked to Egypt , a country with which he has had a long and complex love affair, that has engendered some truly stunning imagery. His images convey a deep understanding of the Egyptian people and their culture, capturing their humanity and resilience.

He first visited the country in 1992, to join his Egyptian lover whom he had met in Paris a year earlier, and immediately fell in love with the country, captivated by its beguiling beauty and the warmth and generosity of its people.

He spent the next three decades visiting the country (before eventually, living there for several years), capturing its unique essence with love, tenderness, profound respect, and a masterful eye for form, light, and color.

5. Martine Franck

One of the finest practitioners of her time, and, like her husband Henri Cartier-Bresson, a major proponent of the humanist style, Martine Franck spent much of her life traversing the globe, capturing utterly compelling depictions of everyday life with remarkable grace and artistry. Her subjects and locations were as diverse as Tibetan temples, and industrial Northern English towns, whilst she also photographed her homeland extensively, notably in 1976, when she and four female compatriots, were commissioned by La Fondation Nationale de la Photographie to document their countrymen and women on vacation, during which she captured her now iconic photograph ‘Swimming Pool Designed by Alain Capeilleres, La Brusc’.

6. Alex Webb

Renowned photojournalist, and judge of our 2020 Street Photography Award (alongside his wife and fellow photographer Rebecca Norris-Webb) Alex Webb is a master of capturing the decisive moment, rendering images filled with energy and movement that communicate brilliantly the atmosphere of the scene.⁠ ⁠ While he has photographed extensively in his homeland, Webb is best known for his vibrant and dynamic work in Latin America and the Caribbean. His images capture the region’s unique atmosphere, rich colors, and intricate details, offering a captivating glimpse into this part of the world.⁠

7. Maggie Steber

One of the finest photographers of her generation, Maggie Steber has dedicated her life to documenting some of the most important stories of our time, a mission that has taken her to some 70 countries, and encompassed everything from the African slave trade to natural disasters. Forthright and rooted in compassion, her images, which have graced the pages of many of the world’s most important publications including, National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, and The Guardian, cut to the heart of the human condition, leaving a lasting impact on viewers worldwide.

8. Frédéric Lagrange

Frédéric Lagrange is a French-born photographer whose breathtaking imagery showcases the dramatic beauty and cultural diversity of our world. Over the last decade and a half, he has traveled extensively, visiting approximately 100 countries across almost every continent, focusing particularly on secluded shores and remote areas, such as the wild and rugged Wakhan Corridor in northeastern Afghanistan. His stunning images, which have been published in The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and The New Yorker (among others) evoke a sense of intrepidity and solidify his position as one of today’s most talented travel photographers.

9. Sebastião Salgado

One of the medium’s most masterful living practitioners, Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Salgado is renowned for his powerful monochromatic images that tell the human stories behind some of the most important issues of our age.

During the course of his near-five decade-long career, he has traversed the globe, capturing extraordinary images, though it is perhaps his depictions of his homeland for which he is best known. In 1986, he travelled to the notorious Serra Pelada gold mine, to photograph some of the 50,000 workers who worked in terrible conditions. His most recent project, the landmark, Amazonia a series of stunning images of the landscapes and people of the world’s largest rainforest captured during a series of trips over the course of six years, is one of his most impressive, communicating the dramatic beauty, incredible biodiversity, and rich cultural heterogeneity of what the photographer calls “paradise on earth”, and thus highlighting the importance of its conservation at what is a crucial tipping point in the fight against climate change.

10. Pia Riverola

One of the best-known travel photographs of recent years, Pia Riverola , is renowned for her dreamy, pastel-hued renderings, which flawlessly capture the very essence of their subject matter.

Whether it’s vibrant flower markets in Mexico City, neon-lit and rain-drenched streets in Tokyo , or the lush landscapes of South American jungles, Riverola ‘s photographs exude a nostalgic and dream-like quality, displaying her masterful understanding of light and inducing a powerful sense of wanderlust.

11. Bruno Barbey

One of the finest photographers of our time, Moroccan-born, French photographer Bruno Barbey, has spent the last five decades travelling the world capturing powerful images that display his unique artistic voice and intrepidity. Over the years he has photographed in Brazil, China, India, his homeland France, and Morrocco, his birthplace, returning on numerous occasions to capture stunning, color-rich images that convey the unique essence of the country.

12. Jimmy Nelson

Judge of our recent Portrait Award , Jimmy Nelson, has dedicated the last ten years to documenting indigenous cultures around the world, which face increasing threats to their traditions and ways of life.

Nelson ‘s adventurous spirit was ignited during his childhood through his father’s work as an exploratory geologist. His first major project involved an epic journey on foot across Tibet in 1987, while seven years later, he documented the newly-opened People’s Republic of China in his acclaimed project “Literary Portraits of China,” which was exhibited in Tiananmen Square before touring globally.

However, it was his subsequent travels around the world to photograph remote cultures using a traditional 50-year-old plate camera, that laid the foundation for the project for which he is best known. “Before They Pass Away”, comprises stunning portraits of 35 different indigenous communities across the globe, capturing their unique traditions and practices in the face of globalization and industrialization.

13. Jim Richardson

Though born in the US, Richardson is immensely proud of his Celtic roots and has spent much of his career focusing on Ireland and Scotland. The latter has been a particularly prominent subject, his fascination with the wild landscapes of the Scottish highlands and the remote islands off its western coastline, engendering a wealth of captivating landscape images that articulate its unique, rugged beauty.

14. Matthieu Paley

French-born Matthieu Paley is one of the finest contemporary travel photographers, whose practice focuses on remote areas, and those communities that call them home.

Working on assignments for National Geographic and other leading publications, he has captured profoundly fascinating photo essays on hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, Greenland’s Inuit and Afghanistan’s Kyrgyz nomads (which he did over the course of a decade), leading to a number of notable awards, including a 2017 World Press Photo award for his portrayal of a Uighur woman in western China.

15. Brooke Holm

The 2nd Prize Winner of our 2018 Color Award for her breathtaking depiction of an Icelandic landscape, Australian-American artist Brooke Holm is one of the most exciting emerging proponents of travel photography. Inspired by satellite imagery and therefore, captured almost invariably from above, her depictions of some of the world’s most beautiful natural scenery are akin to paintings. Rich in color, texture and form, they offer a divergence from conventional viewpoints, showing the natural world at scale, in an attempt to subvert traditional anthropocentric narratives and advocate for coexistence with our environment and its inhabitants.

16. Galen Rowell

Equal parts adventurer and photographer, Galen Rowell spent the majority of his extraordinary life traversing some of the world’s most lofty areas, and capturing stunning landscape images that convey the beauty of the subject.

Throughout his career, Rowell undertook assignments for prestigious publications like LIFE and National Geographic, fearlessly venturing into remote and unforgiving locations, capturing them with unmatched artistry that still resonates today. His work not only showcased the natural wonders of these landscapes but also left a profound impact on the field of photography, inspiring generations of landscape photographers and ensuring his legacy lives on through his work.

17. Ami Vitale

Considered one of the most important conservation photographers of her generation, Ami Vitale has spent her career travelling the globe, traversing more than 100 countries and capturing stunning images that illuminates the often-overlooked heroes and communities whose efforts to protect wildlife and the natural world are truly inspiring. A Nikon Ambassador and regular contributor to National Geographic, Vitale has received numerous awards and commendations over the years, among them a Lucie Humanitarian Award and numerous World Press Photo prizes, which stand as a testament to her dedication and talent in her field.

Few can rival Jody MacDonald when it comes to intrepidity. 19. Evelyn Hofer

Few, if any photographers in history captured the essence of cites in the manner of Evelyn Hofer , the enigmatic German-born photographer who, throughout her impressive career, travelled the world photographing its landscapes and people with rarely-matched grace and artistry.

Whether it was Dublin, Paris, Florence, or the cities of her adopted homeland, the United States, Hofer’s photographs capture the essence of the subject. Instagram was made for dreaming and therefore it was made for travel. It was in Queensland, Australia last year that we met a bunch of Instagram travel photographers and they really showed us the ropes.

We had long chats with Top Travel Instagrammer, Garry Norris about photography and he inspired us to spend more time on this social channel. Instagram was our new pet project.

A couple of months ago, we introduced you to the best Australian Instagrammers in Travel. It was fitting because they were really the first country to really embrace Instagram. Well, this month we want to introduce you to our favourite women Instagram travel photographers. As a woman, I love celebrating talent and success in the field of photography. The ladies are leading the pack when it comes to Instagram and here are our favourite Travel Instagram Photographers celebrating Girl Power. I really love these accounts they are all so unique, filled with beauty, inspiration and incredible photography. So get over to Instagram and follow them now!

Kirsten Alana

Kirsten Alana was the first real travel Instagram photographer we got to know. We had the pleasure of traveling with her quite a bit and picking her brain. She has always been so generous with her knowledge and she’s hugely talented. She’s been on countless Top10 Travel Instagram lists and it’s well deserved. I love following along to see what she and her man @dante8 are up to and reading here well crafted captions to go with her fantastic photographs.

We met Jen in Egypt and were totally blown away by her photography skills. She is a master at iPhone photography. So much so that her Instagram photography is featured in Apple’s World Gallery #shotoniPhone6

Miss Jetsetter

I have no idea how we discovered Miss Jetsetter, but I’m glad we did. I love her pastel hues in her photography. She is always somewhere exciting and her photographs will take you away to a far off place. Plus, she’s a great lady, she’s always been so supportive of us.

YoungAdventuress

We first took notice of Liz while in Queensland Australia. We were doing the same campaign #Room753. However, we never saw each other. She was doing adventures in one spot and we were doing them in another. But we kept up to date on her travels through Queensland through here Instagram photography and we’ve never stopped following. She’s now New Zealand’s premier Instagram photographer and she is always showcasing exciting photographs and adventures to her followers.

LaurenepBath

What can we say about Lauren. She’s the world’s most famous Instagram Travel Photographer and has amassed a huge following. We’ve met her now in both Canada and Australia and she’s as fun in real life as she is at taking amazing photographs. She is constantly crisscrossing the globe sharing a diverse range of photographs.

We just met Chrysti in South Dakota and had an amazing time with this gal. She was one of the first travel photographers on Instagram and has been going strong ever since. If you are wondering why you haven’t heard of her yet, well, health issues forced her to take a year off but she is coming back with gusto and showcasing her beautiful iPhone photography to the world.

The Blonde Abroad

I really enjoy Kiersten’s Instagram feed. She mixes fashion with travel in the most exotic locations. Plus she’s gorgeous. (I can say that, I’m a lady) Her photos always put a smile on my face as she really showcases what it is like to love life and live it to the fullest. I’m always transported somewhere to paradise.

Legal Nomads

What I love about Jodi’s account is how diverse it is. She isn’t afraid to post something out of the ordinary. LegalNomads main focus is food travel, but her photographs show the fun and excitement that travel brings. When you follow LegalNomads you are treated to a window into Jodi’s very exciting life!

We discovered Jewelszee when we discovered the other amazing Australian Instagram travel photographers. We have yet to meet her in person, but she already feels like a friend. She is supportive and generous. We are small potatoes compared to her, but she regularly visits our account to say hello and give our photographs a like. Like many of the other women in this list, her photographs are diverse displaying a range of photography skills.

StephBeTravel

I love Steph Be’s Intagram photography feed. She’s a master at citysapes, but then as you scroll through her photographs, you see that she’s a master at everything. I love her beach shots, fun people shots, selfies and landscapes. It is a feed that makes you want to travel.

AdventurousKate

Kate is a power player in the travel blogging world and is going strong on Instagram too! She is constantly travelling and her feed really shows off the places that she visits. I love the blend of photographs that she shares. It’s a mix of landscape, cities, food, portraits and art. It’s so much fun to follow along and see what Kate is up to each day.

A Lady in London

Don’t let the name fool you. A Lady in London has been to more than 100 countries! Her colourful photographs create a mosaic of sunsets, flowers and luxury living. Named top Instagram in travel by the likes of Esquire & Harper’s Bazaar she also posts for one of our other favourite Instagram Travel Accounts, BBC_Travel.

Inside Travel Lab

Inside the Travel Lab was the very first person we followed in Instagram. Abi has a real eclectic stream of Instagram photographs and I love it! She’s always finding the interesting perspectives and angles and captures exactly what she feels like. There isn’t an agenda in her photographs, it’s a stream of her varied and fun travels.

Rikerama is my kind of Instagram style. Rich hues of travelling the world. Lately she’s done some excellent portraits. She’s another talent coming out of Australia but her feed will take you around the world.

Sherry Ott is an excellent photographer that doesn’t get enough recognition in my humble opinion. Each week on her travel blog, Ottsworld, she highlights the best of Instagram and her Instagram stream is filled with amazing world travels. She doesn’t have one specific style, she has many. Sometimes her shots are saturated, sometimes they’re simple and other times she’ll post a still life and then she’ll freeze a moment in time. I love seeing what moments Sherry chooses to freeze in time.

Nellie is always doing an amazing adventure and her Instagram travel feed proves it. Be it on safari in Africa, jumping out of a plane or trekking in Bhutan, Nellie does it all. Her photography captures each event beautifully. I really love the colours of her feed. They just pop as much as the adventure jumps off the page!

This past March I gave the keynote at the Women in Travel Summit, focusing on gender inequality in the travel blogging industry. One of my topics was about how women are often overlooked in travel photography, especially women of color. So it makes me very happy to see you curating a list of female travel photographers and including some women of color on the list. Thank you for that. 🙂

It’s a tough subject to broach. Just days after my talk, a prominent blog did a featured list of travel photographers and it was entirely men. I pointed this out and the blogger responded that these were his favorite photographers and he didn’t think that he had to fulfill a quota of women if he was talking about his genuine favorites.

And while I do understand why he felt this way, I think it’s important to be cognizant of the content you’re consuming. Be critical of your own taste. If you’re not following female photographers, start following some! If you’re not reading blogs by people of color, start reading some! If you’re not reading fiction by LGBT authors, why not start searching for some on Goodreads?

This list will help people broaden their horizons when it comes to travel photography, and I’m really happy about that.

Thanks Kate. Yeah, I had something else I was going to post today and then changed my mind so I went through everyone’s accounts and took screen grabs from today since the post moved. If it was going up next week like I orignally planned, I probably would have been a week behind in my screen grabs:-) It’s nice to keep it up do date thought and I’m glad you noticed. I think women are really making a mark in photography, especially in Instagram. Dave and I were talking about how so many of our favourite Instagrammers are women. That’s what sparked this post. The people we follow with the some of the biggest numbers are the ladies, like Izkiz who has more than two million followers! I didn’t include her in this post because she tends to showcase other people’s photos these days. It’s only every once in a while I see her own shots in her feed, but she’s a heavy player in photography and it is a fun feed. It also focuses more on DeluxeFX so it’s not necessarily travel. Great point about being aware. I have to admit, I didn’t think about the colour of skin of the photographers, I was just brainstorming what photographs and Instagram accounts I like. I wasn’t about numbers either, Dave and I discussed who we love seeing in our feed. Everyone in this list is unique and talented, and most importantly, they transport us to a destination through there photographs. I think that’s important for travel photography – to make the viewer want to visit that destination. There are women we follow with bigger numbers and while their photos are superb, they don’t make us want to travel or even focus on travel. They are a different type of Instagram photographer. Like fashion, lifestyle or artistic. They’re not travel so they’re not on this list of ours. We really thought this through in the sense that we wanted to showcase female travel instagrammers, but you are so right, in today’s world, we need to be sensitive of everything. Equality in this world should be at the forefront of all our minds. I know I want to live in a world where everyone is treated equal and keeping the conversation going is important. I’m glad that we are naturally diverse in what we read and follow, but I think we can all definitely do better. Thanks for sharing your wise words.

If someone is enjoying life to the fullest, it’s Disa. Wherever she goes, she embraces the opportunities that the place gives. From tenting to petting a reindeer or chilling in a hot tub, she knows how to bring the best out of each moment.

10. Monika Jeske

If you are looking for magic, you should definitely check out Monika’s photography. She uses spectacular skies to emphasize the beauty of locations such as Sicily or Jordan.

Apart from these, she also takes everyday places, like Prague’s old town. And she gives an extra touch to them with her editing style.

11. Rach Stewart

Rach is a photographer from New Zealand, mainly taking photos of mountain landscapes. Her images are incredibly refined and thoughtfully composed.

She plays with colors like a true artist. The smooth transition between shades of the blue hour and cotton candy clouds in her pictures is remarkable.

12. Stijn Dijkstra

Stijn loves creating dramatic images. He often uses silhouettes , sunsets , and flares to reach the desired atmosphere. He often uses a bird’s-eye view to include as much scenery as possible.

Nazariy uses his photography to capture the moment while hiking and traveling through gorgeous places. You can often see a patch of sky, a ray of sunlight, or a passing cloud giving his images an extra touch. He knows how to play with shadows and contrast to create his own style.

Unlike the other accounts in our list, @roamtheplanet is not an individual artist. It’s a photography community built on a passion for adventure.

Thrainn is an Icelandic photographer traveling through his country. The sheer beauty of Iceland shines through his photos, from glaciers to highlands and waterfalls .

16. Gábor Nagy

Gábor is a Hungarian photographer with a passion for traveling and adventures. His work is special because he often manages a minimalistic style of landscapes , with only two or three elements in the picture.

24. Manuel Dietrich

Manuel is passionate about capturing his adventures from California to Germany to Norway. He loves having mountains and lakes in front of his camera.

His composition technique is dynamic. He often creates a foreground by letting plants and stones into his frame. A preset is also available so that his followers can reproduce the unique color tones he’s using.

25. Marvin Kuhr

Marvin is yet another travel photographer who prefers to take a minimalistic approach. He doesn’t overcrowd his frame. He visibly composes each subject of his while consciously using compositional rules. He mainly travels in Europe. But he has also visited locations such as La Réunion and Canada.

26. Emmett Sparling

Other photographers on our list mostly take photos of mountain sceneries. But Emmett regularly visits exotic places and seashores. He has a vibrant and colorful photography style.

He often plays with different lighting conditions. And he ventures into underwater photography , taking portraits and wildlife photos.

27. Brayden Hall

This German travel photographer takes pictures of landscapes as much as castles, villages, and cities. He prefers to do photoshoots at sunset or sunrise, which adds to the dreamy atmosphere of his shots. Looking at André’s photos really makes you want to travel through Europe and visit some of the places he captures.

I watched these kids jump into the small cracks of the reef of the Ocean Road in Havana. I really wanted to photograph them but knew I needed a different approach.. so I put my camera down, took off my shoes & shirt and stood on the cement wall... I jumped in. It was a terrifying leap into a small opening. The kids clapped & any lasting tension faded away. I swam around watching as one by one they jumped in, often hooting to show my support. It was obvious my presence had become less of a nuisance and I may have even earned a small sliver of their respect. I grabbed my camera and starting making pictures.. all the while making sure that they knew my first priority was just being an observer. Encounters some of the world's most fascinating people, Christopher Roche's wonderfully composed images epitomizes great travel photography. Take this picture as an example, which depicts a prostrating pilgrim who sees the final stretch of a Kora (a circumambulation around a sacred site Kailash). The journey has taken her at least three weeks. Roche was a  2016 Sony World Photography Awards National Award winner and shortlisted in the  2017 ZEISS Photography Award .

Pilgrims had the option of having their hand cut off in exchange for walking to Karbala, and many did. I heard a story of a man who returned for the Arba'een pilgrimage for the third time. He was requested to lay his hands down and have one removed. He explained he had already lost both his hands and in response, they shot him. Many on this journey were killed or imprisoned for a minimum of two years. . . Local Iraqis living on this route offered shelter to Shia Muslims and allowed them free passage during the night. They would even mark their homes to signal they were safe and cook all through the night. These children are from a large family who housed Shia Muslims during the days of Saddam Hussein. The men and women refused to be photographed, but they allowed me to photograph their children. It felt wrong to show their faces so I photographed them through the mokeb shelter they still use to shelter pilgrims. . . I travelled through Southern Iraq with an Iranian documentary film crew co-directing and photographing the Arba'een Pilgrimage. It remains the world's largest annual public gathering - attracting over 25 million Shia Muslim pilgrims. . . "Arba'een should be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in several categories. The biggest annual gathering, longest continuous dining table, the largest number of people fed for free, the largest group of volunteers serving a single event, all under the imminent threat of suicide bombings and ISIS." Discover 27 of the most innovative and prolific female photographers and how they've shaped the artform

With today being International Women's Day, it's a great opportunity to take a look at some of the most important, influential, and contemporary women who shaped and are continuing to shape the world of photography.

Despite being an industry traditionally skewed towards men – with names like Ansel Adams immediately springing to mind – some of the world’s most recognized images have been captured by women, working both in the field and operating their own successful photographic studios.

Some of these women are household names in the industry, with the likes of Annie Leibovitz and Dorothea Lange having carved out their place among the best photographers ever . Other names, though, are less known to the masses – but their work and impacts are no less significant.

So let's take a look back at some (but obviously not all) of the most pioneering female photographers and the contributions that they've made to the art of photography, along with some modern names making their marks today…

1. Anna Atkins

A friend of Henry Fox Talbot, Atkins was an English botanist and photographer. She published Photographs Of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions , the first book with photographic illustrations. 

Some sources claim that she was the first woman ever to create a photograph – though others suggest that it was Talbot's wife, Constance, who actually holds this distinction.

2. Julia Margaret Cameron

With a position in Victorian England’s high society, Cameron captured many legendary figures in her short career, which started at the age of 48. She often posed her various sitters as characters from biblical or historical stories, copyrighting all of her photos.

Among her most famous subjects were Charles Darwin, Henry Taylor and Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Ellen Terry and Alice Liddell. 

3. Bertha Beckmann

1815–1901

Beckmann was possibly the first professional female photographer in the world, opening a photographic studio in Leipzig, Germany in 1843 with her husband – a business that she continued to run by herself after his death in 1847.

She moved to the United States in 1949, and would open two studios in New York as well as receive a diploma for special services to portrait photography. An important figure in daguerreotype photography, The Leipzig Museum of City History maintains an exhibit of her work.

4. Mary Carnell

Based in Pennsylvania, USA, American photographer and clubwoman Mary Carnell ran her own photo studio in Philadelphia and in 1909 was the founder and first president of the Women’s Federation of the Photographers’ Association of America. 

A trailblazer of women's representation, Carnell also served as president of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Old Guard State Fencibles, president of the Professional Women's Club and sat on the board of directors of The Plastic Club.

5. Signe Brander

Brander documented the city of Helsinki, Finland and the everyday lives of its inhabitants in the early 20th Century. She created 907 photos of the changing cityscape, often employing a horse-drawn carriage to transport the heavy equipment.

It has been noted that, while women working as photographers was not uncommon in this time period, Brander's position as a city photographer – and her technical acumen for doing so – was indeed rare.

6. Dorothea Lange

Co-founder of Aperture magazine, Lange is responsible for one of the most famous images in photographic history: the iconic ‘Migrant Mother’ shot of Florence Owens Thompson during the Great Depression, which would become the world's most reproduced photograph.

Beyond the sheer visual strength of her photographs, such was the power of her work that it prompted the government to intervene and provide aid to the camp depicted in this series of images. 

7. Tina Modotti

Italian photographer Modotti was a revolutionary activist for the Communist Party, as well as a model and actress. Much of her work involved highlighting Mexican culture, which she began shooting in 1922. 

In 1923 she would open a portrait studio in Mexico City, together with partner and noted photographer Edward Weston, cultivating a successful business. Among her circle of "avant-gardists" were figures like Frida Kahlo, Lupe Marín, Diego Rivera, and Jean Charlot.

8. Berenice Abbott

Abbott started as a darkroom assistant for Man Ray in Paris, but quickly established herself as a visual artist in her own right. She is best known for portraits of between-the-wars cultural figures, urban design and architectural photographs of 1930s New York, and scientific interpretation shots. 

Abbott subscribed to the principles of the 'straight photography movement', which placed great significance on photographs that were not manipulated in either their subject matter or development process.

9. Margaret Bourke-White

Bourke-White is best remembered for her iconic images of World War II and Gandhi at his spinning wheel. In 1941, she became the United States' first female war correspondent.

She holds a number of other distinctions, including being the first foreign photographer allowed to take images of Soviet industry, as well as having her photograph on the cover of Life magazine's first ever issue.

10. Helen Levitt

Levitt was a pioneer in street photography and captured subjects in New York City with her Leica . She has been called “the most celebrated and least-known photographer of her time.”

Such was the significance of her work that she received two grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, and she came to the attention of and worked with both Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans. She would later work in film, getting her first job with surrealist Luis Buñuel.  

11. Gerda Taro

Holding the unfortunate distinction of being the first female photojournalist to have died while covering the frontline of conflict, Taro was a German-Jewish war photographer active during the Spanish Civil War.

Taro was the companion and partner of Robert Capa, actually born Endre Friedmann; "Robert Capa" started as a nom de plume for the work produced by both photographers (much of the early work credited to Friedmann / Capa is in fact believed to be Taro's).

12. Dorothy Norman

Norman was a writer, photographer and social activist who depicted the early 20th Century through sensitive portraits. She donated many photos by herself and husband Alfred Stieglitz.

Her activism and photography were motivated by "a desire to advance both art and action", leading her to take portraits of notable figures including Albert Einstein and Jawaharlal Nehru (who would become India's first Prime Minister).

13. Marion Carpenter

Carpenter started working for the Washington Times-Herald at the age of 24. In 1945 she became the first woman member of the White House News Photographers Association, as well as the first female national press photographer to cover Washington, DC and the White House. 

Even more notably, she was the first woman press photographer permitted to travel with a US President on a daily basis. She developed a warm professional and personal relationship with Harry S Truman. 

14. Diane Arbus

New York-based Arbus documented minority groups who were subject to social prejudice. Her black-and-white portraits famously worked to normalize marginalized subjects including strippers, cross-dressers, carnival performers, tattooed men, nudists and dwarves.

She was awarded a Fellowship by the Guggenheim Foundation in 1963, and in 1972 (a year after she committed suicide) she became the first photographer to be included in the Venice Biennale.

15. Vivian Maier

Maier generated an astounding body of work, consisting of over 150,000 images, but remained in obscurity until her images were distributed online after her death. Her photography encapsulated life in American cities, with a focus on the less fortunate members of society.

Her photographs languished in obscurity until they were purchased in a sale after she failed to make payments on her Chicago storage space. After being shared on Flickr in 2009, the photographs went viral. The story of Maier's work and its discovery was the subject of Oscar-nominate documentary, Finding Vivian Maier .

16. Sara Facio

1932-present

Facio co-founded La Azotea, the first publishing house in Latin America dedicated to photography. She also established the Fotogalería of the Teatro Municipal General San Martín, one of the most prominent exhibition spaces in Argentina.

Her subjects included prominent Argentinian cultural figures, writers and poets such as Julio Cortázar, María Elena Walsh and Alejandra Pizarnik, and her work sits in the collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. 

17. Annie Leibovitz

1949-present

Arguably one of the most famous female photographers alive, Leibovitz is best known for her engaging and intimate portraits – particularly of celebrities. In 1991 she became the first woman to hold an exhibition at Washington’s National Portrait Gallery.

A photographer for Rolling Stone magazine, her cover shot of John Lennon and Yoko Ono – taken just hours before Lennon's assassination – has achieved iconic status. The Library of Congress declared her a Living Legend, a distinction she shares with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Walter Cronkite and Steven Spielberg. 

18. Nan Goldin

1953-present

Goldin’s work features and explores LGBT bodies, moments of intimacy, the HIV crisis, and the opioid epidemic. A recovering opioid addict, her intimate images often document her own life and those who are close to her.

Like Diane Arbus, her work focuses on celebrating marginalized lifestyles and groups, with her first solo show in 1973 dedicated to her time spent with the gay and transgender communities.

19. Cindy Sherman

1954-present

Sherman’s one of the most influential people in contemporary art. She has worked as her own model for more than 30 years, capturing herself in a range of personas and assuming multiple roles: photographer, model, makeup artist, hairdresser and stylist.

An inspiration to photographers such as Flora Borsi, Sherman was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship in 1995 and received an honorary doctorate from London's Royal College of Art in 2013.

20. Shirin Neshat

1957-present

Iranian-born Neshat has a collection of images with a strong commentary on cultural and gender inequality in her native country. The challenges of being a Muslim woman is a great motivation behind her images.

Her work has been honored at the highest level, including winning the International Award at the Venice Biennale and the Silver Lion for best director at the Venice Film Festival. In 2020 she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society.

21. Francesca Woodman

Best known for her creative mono self-portraits, Francesca Woodman also shot women who were blurred (due to movement and long exposures), merged with their surroundings. At just 22, she committed suicide, leaving behind evocative images that influenced a generation of artists.

Most of her photographs were shot on 6x6 medium format cameras. She also worked in video, with her pieces being shown at the Helsinki City Art Museum in Finland, Miami's Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, the Tate Modern in London, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York. 

22. Petra Collins

1992-present

Collins is an artist, model, photographer and one of the leading voices of the New-Wave Feminism movement. She has landed major campaigns at Adidas, Gucci and Nordstrom, and retains complete creative control over them.

In addition to her photographic output, she has also emerged as a director and filmmaker, with her work spanning documentaries to music videos for artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Selena Gomez, and Cardi B.

23. Deana Lawson

1979-present

As an American artist, educator and photographer born and based in New York, Lawson’s work primarily focuses on issues of intimacy, family, spirituality, sexuality, and black aesthetics. 

She was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize 'for significant achievement in contemporary art' and her work has featured in museums and galleries such as New York's International Center for Photography, Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

24. Julia Fullerton-Batten

1972 - present

German-born, London-based fine art and commercial photographer Julia Fullerton Batten is known for her distinctly creative style, often in unusual locations using cinematic lighting. Since she started her full-time freelance photography in 2001, Batten has produced 17 major projects exploring everything from the relationship between mother and daughter to documenting feral children and her 2021 series examined the art of contortionism. Her work is instantly recognizable and deeply rooted in theatrics, her use of color is captivating and her images have a deeply mysterious quality to them. She's got a permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery, the Musee de l'Elysee and Lausanne. 

25. Carolyn Mendelsohn

Best known for her award-winning series, Being Inbetween which examines the complex transition between girlhood and womanhood, Carolyn's striking portraits have been exhibited all over the UK including the Norther Eye Fringe, Impressions Gallery and it has been featured online on Buzzfeed and The Guardian. Although her career started in the world of film as a director and filmmaker, her passion for photography developed when she became a Mum and had to look after three small children. She is an ambassador for both Nikon and the Royal Photographic Society and in 2020 she has crowned the winner a portrait series in the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards.

26. Anna Neubauer

Austrian born photographer and visual artist Anna Neubauer is best known for her ongoing work centered around people with visibile differences. Through thought-provoking images that tell a story, Nebauer hopes to address the importance of diversity in inclusion while bringing the surreal world of her imagination to life. In the Portrait of Britain Vol5. two of her photos were selected as winning images and she has previously won the Female in Focis award, also by the British Journal of Photography, she came 3rd placd in the Portrait category at the Sony World Photo Award in 2022 and was crowned the Adobe Rising Star of Photography 2021. 

27. Lucia Griggi

Cornwall, England-based commercial and editorial photographer Lucia Griggi made a name for herself in a predominantly man's world. As one of very few female surf photographers, Lucia's love of water (despite her fear of the ocean) pushed her to take shots that no one else was taking. Throughout her varied career, Lucia has shot everything from penguins to people, sporting events to stunning landscapes using photography as a means to travel the world. Check out our interview with Lucia conducted to celebrate International Women's Day.

Sara was born in Milan and moved to NYC to chase her dreams of becoming a fashion photographer, but it wasn’t long until she began to question her decision. The world of fashion made her question her own beauty ultimately leading her to take a leap of faith and travel the world. Sara's goal is to capture the beauty of women in their natural element through her portraits and passion project, Quest for Beauty .

Jaz O'Hara 

Jaz spent 8 years living a nomadic lifestyle - she has traveled to Sri Lanka, Beijing and beyond. Jaz documented her time during each adventure. In 2015, she wrote a very emotional piece  on her experience in Calais Jungle in France - the post went viral and sparked a huge, supportive response, which led to the creation of The Worldwide Tribe  - a platform that aims to spread awareness raise funds for refugees. The Complete Guide to Travel Photography

As travelers, our cameras can feel like a fifth limb—an essential tool with which to move through the world and absorb new experiences. They make it possible to document the people we meet. They provide tangible memories of the remarkable beauty we travel so far to see. Ultimately, they help us communicate what words cannot.

In the digital era, the tie between travel and photography feels more innate than ever. Photography has become more accessible and affordable to dabble in (who even needs a real camera with phones these days? ). On the flip side, it can feel as if documenting and sharing our travel experiences has become half of the seeing itself. In her essay on pushing herself to take a photo-free trip , Allie Jones asks a question we can all relate to: “If you visit a trendy upstate New York museum and don’t take any photos, were you ever really there?”

As the routine of snapping and sharing becomes as habitual as rinse and repeat, others urge us to become more thoughtful with our travel photography. Just because we can photograph and share everything, in a matter of seconds, doesn’t mean we need to. In his feature, Tyler Moss explores the #nogeotag movement , and looks at just how our photo sharing can drastically alter a destination—and decide who gets to experience it. For professional photographers Gray Malin and Alex Strohl , the “how” of nailing their iconic travel photographs has relied more on patience, and analog techniques like driving massive props cross-country, or waiting for the perfect shot in sub-zero temps, than on any new developments.

And, just in case you were starting to let your Instagram feed convince you that you’ve seen it all, we’ve pulled in photo studies from photographers whose work we can’t help but ogle. Jessica Sarkodie shares a refreshing look at the unspoiled beaches of her native Ghana. 1. Ksenia Minerva

Ksenia, 25, still lived in St.Petersburg in early 2021, working as a motion designer who daydreamed of adventure. She bought a mobile home in June, took her dog Busty along for the ride and the pair began travelling Russia.

She uses a gas cooker to prepare food, sleeps in the mobile home and a tent, replenishes her water supplies at gas stations, charges her equipment using solar batteries and even manages to use a hair straightener with the aid of a small power generator. 

She travels the taiga, the Far North, as well as southern Russia and likes to stop overnight in the mountains, woods and even desert islands. All of this beauty is, of course, shared with her followers. She also does streams to talk about the difficulties of living in the wilderness.

3. Anna Korob

In 2018, Anna accidentally came across an old silver ruble from the time of Nicholas II’s reign. This led to an obsession with numismatics, followed by history and Russian architecture. She began collecting coins, studying the past, visiting old mansions and churches across the country and documenting it all in her blog.

“Each trip is like a little lifetime of its own. Thousands of kilometers by car through swamps, fields or highland serpentines, morning coffee at gas stations, misty dawns, interesting new acquaintances and stories told by locals, as well as chance encounters with wild animals and so much more…” Anna writes. 

With her blog, she seeks to draw attention to disappearing architectural monuments, claiming that there are thousands to explore - from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. 

5. Artem Ray

Given that international travel was temporarily halted during the pandemic, Artem set about traversing Russia. 

Half a year ago, he began showing interesting Moscow and regional spots on his Instagram account. As a result, his blog turned into a mixture of the coziest and most atmospheric locations with wooden ‘izbas’, French-style castles, lighthouses and the most beautiful mansions across Russia.

“This life with its daily grind sucks you in like quicksand. You’re constantly solving issues related to work, studies and accommodation and, at some point, you begin to realize that you’re living the same scenario over and over again, while new experiences are reduced to a minimum… Traveling across Russia and blogging about it, therefore, are a source of inspiration, motivation and of sense of purpose, as well as a source of pleasure,” Artem writes.

NBC Select Travel Awards 2024: The best hardshell and softshell suitcases

At NBC Select, we spend hours researching, testing and reviewing products so that you can be more selective and informed about the things you buy. For our first-ever NBC Select Travel Awards, we spent months thoroughly testing travel gear covering various categories.

We traveled across the globe to Tokyo with hardshell suitcases and packing cubes , commuting to and from our New York City office with weekenders and duffel bags and tried toiletry bags , noise-canceling headphones and more.

After all of our testing, we collected thoughtful feedback for every product. After sifting through all editors’ reviews, we found the products deserving of the Travel Award winner’s stamp of approval.

Below, we rounded up the best hardshell and softshell suitcases, plus information about how we evaluated each product.

How we picked the best hardshell and softshell suitcases.

Arguably one of the most important types of bags you’ll take with you on a long-haul trip, a great hardshell and softshell suitcase should be durable, spacious, easy to maneuver and able to hold up well against scratches, scuffs and potential damage (especially if you regularly check in your bags).

• Durability: Overall, we wanted to see that once the bag was fully packed, it was easy to pull and roll around on various surfaces, including carpet, tile and pavement. We also wanted to see if the fully packed suitcases held their shape well with items like clothes and shoes inside. Plus, it was important to ensure that the suitcases held up well against elements such as water or accidental spills.
• Maneuverability: Similar to durability, we prioritized maneuverability in the hardshell softshell suitcases we tested. We wanted to ensure the handles weren’t flimsy or prone to breaking, especially after pulling and handling the bag for hours. Additionally, we wanted to make sure the suitcases were relatively easy for the average person to lift and carry if they plan on using them as carry-ons.
• Spaciousness: We wanted to make sure the suitcases we awarded had sufficient room to hold common articles of clothing such as t-shirts, pants, shorts, underwear, and certain types of shoes. Ideally, the bag would hold at least a few days' worth of outfits. We also wanted to make sure they were compatible with packing cubes, which help to keep belongings more organized.

Best overall hardshell suitcase: away the bigger carry-on.

Away The Bigger Carry-On

Away’s The Bigger Carry-On is the best overall hardshell suitcase because it delivered when it came to all of our testing criteria. This Away suitcase, as the name implies, is a subtly larger version of the brand’s standard carry-on suitcase. The bag can fit multiple packing cubes and has ample room for clothing, toiletries and shoes. It also comes with a small bag for storing dirty laundry.

Additionally, it comes with a TSA-approved lock, which NBC Select associate reporter Bianca Alvarez found useful during her travel testing.  “I loved using this carry-on and was able to pack roughly around 10 days worth of clothes with the help of packing cubes,” she says. “I also thought that the inside features were convenient.” Aside from space for clothing, it also has straps and buckles, which help flatten and secure the items in the bag, which makes it easier to close. The handle is easy to adjust and the wheels roll smoothly and handle various surfaces well, whether upright or at an angle.

Best lightweight hardshell suitcase: Quince 21” Carry-On

Quince 21” Carry-On

During our testing, we found that the Quince 21” Carry-On balances durability and maneuverability well. While the suitcase keeps belongings safe and secure, it’s also easy to lift and place in an overhead compartment or into the trunk of a car, especially when it is fully packed. NBC Select associate updates editor Zoe Malin tested the bag and loved how well it handled different terrain. “I dragged this bag through the streets of New York, on multiple flights, checked and not checked, and dragged it up flights of stairs and it looks great,” she says. While the bag is prone to some scrapes (the case with many hardshell bags), it comes with a small sponge to help wipe scuffs away.

Best budget hardshell suitcase: Bagsmart Carry-On  

Bagsmart Carry-On

The Bagsmart Carry-On can hold a surprisingly large amount given its size, according to NBC Select managing editor Leah Ginsberg, who tested the bag. “I was really impressed by this carry-on. Its dimensions are smaller than the average carry-on,” she says. “But it held a lot of things and the quality is good for the price.” The suitcase is slightly smaller than the standard carry-on size for most major airlines but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice space for storing clothing or other travel items. It also has 360-degree wheels, an adjustable handle with four heights, TSA-approved locks on the zippers, multiple compartments for organizing clothes and an expandable zipper on the side.

Best softshell suitcases

Thule Subterra 2 Carry-On Spinner

Thule’s Subterra 2 suitcase is the perfect softshell carry-on for your travel needs, whether you’re using it for a quick trip or taking it on a long-haul vacation. Former NBC Select editorial operations manager Shari Uyehara says that while testing the bag, it “helped make traveling a lot easier” — she loves its sleek, stylish design, and how well it’s held up after multiple trips. It’s made from a polycarbonate shell and a durable nylon/polyester blend that’s designed to be water-resistant and to withstand the impact of travel wear and tear, according to the brand.

The suitcase also includes an easily-accessible removable panel that compresses your clothes to maximize packing space, which Uyehara says she loves most of all. “I love how spacious it is and that it can easily hold all of my items,” she says. She also says that, compared to other carry-on suitcases she’s tried, this one is lightweight and very easy to wheel around.

Best lightweight: Calpak Luka Soft Sided Carry-On

Calpak Luka Soft Sided Carry-On

Malin, who’s never used soft-shell luggage before, says that this suitcase is “ideal to use for a short trip”, because of its spacious yet lightweight design. When testing the suitcase for a weekend trip, Malin says she fit three full day outfits, three pairs of pajamas and three workout outfits inside of the suitcase’s main compartment, plus underwear, bras and socks.

It’s made from Calpak’s puffy, polyester Luka material, which the brand says is designed to withstand travel — the flexible material also makes it easier to close (and overstuff, according to Malin). The carry-on also has 360-degree spinner wheels and two front pockets with a padded laptop compartment, which Malin says is her favorite part of the bag. “The sleeve makes it really easy to take my laptop out, which would be super helpful if I was going through security at the airport,” she says. Malin says she can store extras like her resistance bands and Bala bangles in the larger part of the pocket, and it’s an easy bag to wipe clean.

Mary Earps is poised to leave Manchester United and join Paris Saint-Germain in a move that will reportedly make her the highest paid female goalkeeper in world football.

The club future of the England star, crowned the best goalkeeper in the women’s game at the start of the year, has been under intense speculation with her contract at Old Trafford set to expire this summer.

While there have been negotiations over a new deal, Earps is now on the brink of leaving United to sign for PSG on a free transfer, Le Parisien report.

United turned down a world-record bid for their goalkeeper from Arsenal last summer but are now set to lose her for nothing.

The report suggests Earps’ move to the French capital could be announced before the end of the week.

Earps joined United in 2019, helping the club win the Women’s FA Cup last season after beating Tottenham 4-0 in the final.

However, the future of United’s women’s team has come under scrutiny following comments from their new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe and his INOES staff are presiding over a pivotal summer at the club with key appointments already made off the pitch in an attempt to lift the men’s team from its current malaise.

The women’s transfer window opened this Monday but in an interview with Bloomberg, Ratcliffe suggested immediate focus will be solely on the men’s team.

Asked what they are doing with the women’s team, Ratcliffe replied: ‘Well they’ve just won the FA Cup.’

He continued: ‘We haven’t gone into that level of detail with the women’s football team yet.

‘We’ve been pretty much focused on how do we resolve the first-team issues, in that environment, and that’s been pretty full time for the first six months.’

Fourth of July deals are already gearing up, and Everlane’s Summer Sale event is officially here with some of the deepest discounts we’ve ever seen from the label. As one of the Strategist’s resident experts on clothing basics, I’ve compiled a list of the very best pieces, from wedding-guest-appropriate dresses to butt-flattering jeans and sleek leather sandals. Starting off strong, I spotted this classic linen shirtdress that’s 70 percent off.

Our managing editor, Kelsie Schrader, calls this crewneck tank her “go-to office shirt” right now. She owns it in black, but you can snag it in this gray shade.

And if you prefer spaghetti straps, I found another tank made from the same lightweight Supima cotton.

Or here’s a dressier top with a charming tie-wrap closure.

When the weather finally starts to cool down, you’ll be glad you scored these jeans on sale for just $33.

Everlane’s Way-High jeans are, you guessed it, ultra-high-waisted. And because they’re made from 98 percent cotton and 2 percent elastane, they have just enough stretch.

As the name suggests, here’s an easy pair of shorts to pull on for on-the-go summer days.

If you’re looking for office-appropriate pants, I found a modern twist on regular chinos featuring wide legs, front pleats, and a removable D-ring belt.

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. “In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”
