Your Guide cum driver will pick up from centrally located Habarana / Sigiriya / Dambulla hotel & drive by a Safari jeep to hiriwadunna village, a beautiful rural area in Habarana city. Safari jeep transfer gives you a good chance to experience the natural breeze and take photos of the attractions alongside the road.

Bullock cart ride

Usually this 03 hour trek begins with a Bullock Cart Ride to Hiriwadunna through unbeaten village tracks. There are 2 Bulls dragging the cart and ride last long from 15mins to 30mins. Rides ends near the Hiriwadunna Lake where you get off from the cart and join for Catamaran Boat Ride 

Catamaran Boat ride

Catamaran Boat Ride takes place on the Hiriwadunna lake. You will cruise admiring the amazing views besides the lake which is also overlooking the Sigiriya and pidurangala rocks. If you are interested in, you can also join with the Boatman and help out rowing the boat. He might surprise you with his craftsmanship and creativity, hat for the gentleman and a beautiful necklace for the ladies. At the end of the Tour Boat will dock by the small village on the other side of the shore.

Village House Activities & Lunch or Snack

You can observe a traditional daily live of a real village house. Should not miss a visit to the paddy field, See a garden where endemic vegetable grown. Climb the tree house next to the paddy field where farmers sleeps at night and try to keep animals away from the paddy. You can enjoy a simple traditional meal prepared by a village woman the using the Farmer’s hand-picked vegetables from the plot. If time permits you can also see how a village woman cook a traditional meal or a roti. After lunch or Snack there will be small presentation of how to make a roof out of coconut leaves and how to use kulla and mirisgala to separate rice seeds from the husks and straw.

Tuk Tuk ride

At the end of the village tour you will be taking a Tuk-Tuk ride few-miles back to the main road- Habarana.

Then you will be drop to your hotel by a Safari Jeep.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to see the culture and natural surroundings of a genuine Sri Lankan hamlet by enrolling in the 2.5-hour Habarana village tour. Your guide/driver will collect you up from the conveniently placed Habarana hotel and take you to the lovely rural Hiriwadunna village in Habarana city via tuk-tuk. The journey begins with a ride in a bullock cart by the village pond. Next, you will take a boat ride to the other side of the little village. You can arrive at the village house after taking a short stroll through the vegetable and paddy fields. You can unwind in the village house while enjoying a delectable Sri Lankan meal. After that, ride a Tuk Tuk to the tour’s starting point. After you finish the tour, you will be taken back to your hotel by a tuk-tuk.

Trek through a Sri Lankan Village: Hiriwadunna

Immersing yourself with the locals many times means getting out of the flashing city lights and exploring smalls towns that are not known to receive hordes of tourists. In Sri Lanka that meant breaking away from the capital city of Colombo and heading northeast to Hiriwadunna Village.

Hiriwadunna is a tiny village of roughly 2,500 people.

The start of the trek, which was more of a saunter, led us to the home of a family of five who cultivates shallots.

The entire patio was filled with these onion-related vegetables, and if you took a peek inside the family room of the home you’d find the floor there covered too — evidence that the crop yield had been good this season.

It’s not always that way due to the poor soil in the area,  Hiriwadunna farmers use the slash and burn cultivation, a process where natural vegetation is cut down and burned in order to prep the land for farming. Roughly every two years, the soil becomes infertile and the farmer has move locations to begin the process all over again.

The fruits of their labor are then bartered with their neighbors,  if one grows peppers the other grows beans and they trade amongst the village people. In some cases,  Cinnamon Hotels (where I stayed during my Sri Lanka visit) will buy some of their vegetable overflo.

The walk continued along the path where medicinal wild ginger grows, laundry is strung from between trees and butterflies flutter about. There are 240 species of butterflies found in Sri Lanka and it seemed as if they were all here, hovering along the low shrubs.

When we reached a colorful set of catamarans, the trek turned into a boat ride.

The boats are typically used for cruising between villages, a water taxi of sorts. But it’s more than just a practical mode of transportation, it’s also a peaceful ride through the waters covered with green lily pads.

Where are all the frogs?

“Seeing a frog on a lily pad” is actually on my bucket list . Luckily, I was able to tick that one off while staying in a Tuscan villa , because there were none here.  It didn’t matter, it was a beautiful ride.

Boating to the other side of the man-made lake, brought us to the home of a 55 year old farmer who invited us to take a peek into his world.

He was cooking lunch when we arrived.

Life seemed simple here in a sense, away from the normal stresses of a bustling metropolitan town. His days were mostly spent tending to the crops, and protecting them by keeping a lookout for hungry elephants who are a threat to his precious produce.

His watchtower was a fort on stilts.

The treehouse watchtower, is not only where the village farmer sleeps when crops are in season, but also the perfect vantage point to spot elephants down below . When one comes within the vicinity, he s creams “alea”, which means elephant, as an attempt to scare the them away.

If yelling doesn’t work, then the pop of a  Superman firecracker does.

The finale to the trek, was not a hiking expedition at all.

It was a double-ox cart ride.

We rode along bouncing in the back, through the rural village, paddy lands and green forests where men were working in the fields and children roamed about.

The few hours of this adventure was just a tiny glimpse into the everyday lives of the Hiriwadunna village people, who welcomed us into their homes and little piece of the world. It is rare to have tour visit like this, one that takes you to a rural community and doesn’t feel like a tourist trap.

How to Book: You can book the Hiriwadunna Village Trek through Chanak Advneture and the Elephant Safari tour through Cinnamon Nature Trails.

Where to Stay: I stayed at in a nearby town, at the 4-star Habarana Village  (from $88 USD), but for a more luxury experience try the Cinnamon Lodge Habarana (from $96 USD). If you are looking for a truly unique lodging experience. book a night in at Elephant Watch Hut  (from $70), where you will be sleeping in a treehouse on stilts.

Other Nearby Must Dos: While traveling through Sri Lanka I highly recommend climbing the 1200 stairs to the peak of Sigiriya Rock (the view is phenomenal) and taking an elephant safari in Kaudulla National Park .

Where to Eat: Dewata Villas Village Restaurant for a Sri Lankan BBQ experience, eat local curries at Mihini or Yaan Oya .

Language:  Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages of Sri Lanka, though English is sporadically spoken, especially in hotels and restaurants.

Compare than the city life this is some awesome experience. Very calm and green place, no pollution, no noises. I would like to invite you to make a visit in Tamil nadu, India. Here is a lot more places to visit, that will really make you feel different.

The name Hiriwadunna comes from Siri+weda+unna or Himi+weda+unna, both meaning “Buddha was here”. The village temple at Hiriwadunna is the real Bodhgaya where Prince Siddhartha attained Buddhahood – the original Ficus religiosa still stands there. Hiriwadunna is a special place indeed, been there in 2014, The scenery and aura is like a different world, detached from the rest of Sri Lanka.

Village life,cooking and great food. We had a great time here , experiencing how village life could be. Our hostesses were very friendly and explained how food was prepared and we had a great time joining in.The food prepared was delicious and plentiful. A really enjoyable experience.

Unique experience Aug 2022 We were not expecting what eventuated but once we settled in we had a great experience. A bullock cart ride, walk, canoe excursion and lunch at a Sri Lankan farmhouse were all a part of the experience. Lunch was at the farmhouse where we experienced the cooking as well as the traditional foods of the villagers complete with no utensils and a Lilly pad as a plate.

Hiriwadunna Village Tour

This private day excursion to the hamlet of Hiriwadunna in Sri Lanka showcases the laid-back rhythms of small village life. While local people fish and wash their clothes, they see species such as crocodiles, butterflies, and birds in the local reservoir. Then take a boat trip across the lake to the opposite side, where you’ll have a ‘bullock’ cart ride and a complimentary Sri Lankan lunch. At the local reservoir, look for butterflies, birds, and the odd crocodile. A traditional bullock cart is also available for hire. This is a fantastic way to experience Sri Lankan rural life.

Hiriwadunna Village tour.

You may visit the tiny hamlet of Hiriwadunna from Sigiriya to observe how the locals live. The day excursion lasts approximately 5-hours and includes a boat journey to the town (where you may observe numerous birds and maybe even crocodiles) and a stroll through the hamlet.

Expect to witness people fishing, going about their everyday lives, seeing more animals, and eating a home-cooked meal prepared by the villagers!

our driver will pick up from centrally located Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Kimbissa, Inamaluwa or Kandalama hotel & drive by a Tuk tuk to tour start point. When you visit the great ‘Sigiriya rock’ A fortress that stand up in the wildness. Where once upon a time, an aesthetic king built his hideway to rule his kingdom. Even today – Sigiriya stands like a sentinel in the sky. your experience begins the village called ‘Ehelagala’, a beautiful rural area in Sigiriya city. Tuk tuk transfer gives you a good chance to experience the natural breeze and take photos of the attractions alongside the road. GPS

Bullock cart is the first vehicle in Sri lanka. In the past once famous mode of transport of local royalty. Today this vehicle have become coordinating between the past and present.  Usually this 2.5 hour trek begins with a Bullock Cart Ride to Ehelagala through unbeaten village tracks. It adjacent to the great ‘Sigiriya rock’. You can ride the bullock cart in gravel path becomes the dust, red soil of a bund. There are 2 Bulls dragging the cart and ride last long from 15 minutes.  You might see some animals & birds , in the jungle. In the distance and the seemingly endless expanse of cool, cool green. Meander along the grassy bank of the picturesque ehelagala for a truly satisfying birding experience. Rides ends near the Lake.

Catamaran boat ride

Catamaran Boat Ride takes place on the Ehelagala lake. You will cruise admiring the amazing views besides the lake which is also overlooking the Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. That was an amazing scenery. We never forgot to take some photos of that beautiful scenery. At the same time, we saw few Sri Lankan birds were sitting on the trees & branches.

If you are interested in, you can also join with the Boatman and help out rowing the boat. While the catamaran ride boatman plucked both fresh lotus flowers & lotus leaves from the lake, you might surprise with his craftsmanship and creativity. After seeing  lotus garlands & nice hats of lotus leaves we were very much impressed. With a nice loving smile,  he  put those hats on gentleman heads and a beautiful necklace around ladies neck. At the end of the Tour Boat will dock by the small village on the other side of the shore.

Village house activities

You can observe a traditional daily live of a real village house. Should not miss a visit to the paddy field, See a garden where endemic vegetable grown. Climb the tree house next to the paddy field where farmers sleeps at night and try to keep animals away from the paddy.

One village woman who wears redda & hatte (Traditional dress of Sri Lanka) , warmly greeted us with a nice smile saying, ‘AYUBOWAN’!

Cooking demongstration

She gave you a half an hour cooking demonstration on traditional Sri Lankan cooking. You can also see how a village woman cook a traditional meal or a roti. She Shows how to make a roof out of coconut leaves and how to use kulla and mirisgala to separate rice seeds from the husks and straw. You can also try those items. You can enjoy a simple traditional meal prepared by a village woman the using the Farmer’s hand-picked vegetables from the plot.

Your lunch was served in a buffet style, rice with 5-6 traditionally cooked Sri Lankan curries and fresh fried fish in clay pots. Also you can taste desserts like fresh fruits and local cookies. Remarkable experience is lunch served on top of clean lotus leaves.

After having your delicious Sri Lankan snack with a herbal drink or lunch you can spent your time over there. 

At the end of the village tour you will be taking a Tuk-Tuk ride few-miles back to the main road- Habarana.

Then you will be drop to your hotel.
