2024 Northern Lights & Fall Colors Iceland Photo Tour

Embark on an unforgettable journey with us this fall in our Iceland Photo Tour . Immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty of Iceland, a landscape photographer’s dream destination.

Picture yourself on volcanic beaches , where the stark contrast of black sand meets the powerful backdrop of the ocean. Witness the majesty of some of Europe’s largest glaciers . Marvel at the dramatic mountains that seem to defy reality, as if taken right out of a fantasy movie. The waterfalls in Iceland are also a sight to behold, each one more jaw-dropping than the previous.

But the magic doesn’t end there – at nightfall, you can experience the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Northern Lights , painting the sky with hues of green and violet. Under this breathtaking phenomenon, each location becomes magical when the Aurora shines across the night sky.

We’ve scheduled our photo tour around the fall equinox, the best time of the year to photograph the Northern Lights .

2024 ICELAND PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR ITINERARY

Our Iceland Photo Tour itinerary is tentative and flexible, as it will be adjusted according to the weather conditions. During the night sessions, we will move to areas with clear skies to increase our chances of seeing the Northern Lights.

September is statistically the best time to see the Aurora in terms of solar activity, so if the weather permits, this will be an Iceland Northern Lights tour .

DAY 1: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

Our Iceland photo tour begins at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), where we will be waiting for you to take you to our first hotel.

After a meet and greet with the rest of the group and a welcome speech, we will do a quick gear review to make sure that you have your camera gear ready for the adventure!

Later, we’ll do a  sunset session around the oldest lighthouse in Iceland;  Reykjanesviti . In this area, you will find some photogenic cliffs and sea stacks where we will capture our first images. If there are favorable conditions at night, our first-Northern Ligths photography session will be in the Reykjanes Peninsula with different locations in the cliffs,  Lake Kleifarvatn, and the photogenic houses of Straumur.

DAY 2: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the second day of our Iceland photography tour, our first stop will be  Seljalandsfoss, one of the most impressive waterfalls on the island. As we get closer, you’ll see its tall elegant shape from the distance. One of the highlights here is walking behind the waterfall. Close to this waterfall, we will visit another secluded waterfall called Gljufrafoss .

We will continue along the Icelandic Ring Road until we reach one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland, Skogafoss. This massive stream of water will take your breath away. It is one of our favorite spots on the trip, and it’ll probably be familiar from popular series such as Vikings or Game of Thrones.

After Skogafoss, we’ll visit the nearby Kvernufoss. This waterfall tends to be overshadowed by the neighboring Skogafoss despite being one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Iceland. Here, we’ll show you different compositions and we’ll also walk behind the waterfall for some unique views.

If conditions are favorable, we will return to Seljalandsfoss to photograph the sunset, and if chances are in favor for seeing the Northern Lights , we will take photographs from Skogafoss .

DAY 3:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the third day of our Iceland photo tour , we’ll explore one of the most photogenic regions in the country— a landscape adorned with glaciers, glacier lagoons, and glacier beaches . Our first glacier of the day will be Svinafellsjokull glacier, one of Iceland’s most striking glaciers, which well meet at eye level after a brief walk.

Later, after checking in to our accommodation, we’ll witness a serene sunset at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon , renowned for good reason as one of the most photogenic spots in Iceland. Returning at night, we hope to capture the elusive beauty of the Aurora Borealis over this iconic spot.

iceland photo tours photos

En route to the glaciers, we’ll make stops at the Fjadragljufur canyon,  a delicately beautiful moss-covered canyon, and the distinctive Lomagnupur rock , shooting almost straight up from the ground. These locations will add diverse elements to our visual journey. This day promises not just photographic opportunities but an authentic encounter with the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland’s icy landscapes.

DAY 4:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

As the morning sun breaks on the fourth day of our Iceland guided photo tour, we’ll visit the surreal Diamond Beach for our morning shoot. Diamond Beach is an otherworldly landscape where the sunrise casts an ethereal glow on icebergs scattered along the black sand. These icebergs travel downstream from the nearby Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and wash up in Diamond Beach when the tide is low.

After the morning shoot, we’ll revisit the glacier lagoons of Jokulsarlon and Fjallsarlon, now bathed in the clarity of daylight, offering new perspectives and compositions.

The day takes a thrilling turn as we dive into one of Iceland’s most remarkable adventures—a journey into an ice cave . September marks the reopening of these wonders to the public, and we will visit them with the safety and expertise of a local Icelandic guide. Get ready for an exploration where photography meets the raw, transient allure of the ice caves, creating visually striking abstract images.

If the forecast for the Northern Lights is promising, we’ll be back at the glacier lagoons to photograph them.

DAY 5:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the fifth day of our Iceland photography tour , our journey along the Ring Road leads us to the picturesque village of Hofn. After settling into our hotel, we’ll head over to the breathtaking Stokksnes beach , featuring its striking black sand dunes and the majestic Vestrahorn as the focal point. Amidst this stunning landscape, we’ll explore diverse compositions, experimenting with reflections, framing techniques using the sand dunes, and leveraging the waves as captivating leading lines; there are limitless possibilities!

For our evening shoot, we’ll venture to the easternmost edge of our Iceland expedition—the enchanting Hvalnes Lighthouse . This coastal gem offers a prime vantage point for capturing both the iconic lighthouse and the awe-inspiring silhouette of Eystrahorn , standing tall as one of Iceland’s most captivating mountains.

Should the night sky favor us with a promising forecast for the Northern Lights, we’ll return to Stokksnes to photograph the Aurora.

DAY 6: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the sixth day of our Iceland photography trip, we’ll start our visual journey with a breathtaking sunrise shoot at the iconic Stokksnes . We’ll then hit the road and start driving back to the west.

En route to our final destination, if time permits, we’ll stop to do an optional hike to the beautiful Svartifoss Waterfall , this waterfall is surrounded by basalt columns which makes this setting unique. We’ll then continue heading towards Vik , the southernmost town in Iceland and a significant hub in the region. Nestled against the backdrop of dramatic landscapes, Vik is a true gem for photographers.

At Vik, we’ll do a sunset session at the renowned Dyrholaey Arch , where the interplay of light and shadow paints the coastal cliffs in hues of gold and amber. The black sand beach of Reynisfjara , with its striking basalt columns, offers more stunning compositions for us to explore.

As night falls, we’ll keep our eyes on the sky (and the forecasts), paying attention to the possibility of witnessing the Northern Lights. If the forecast is favorable, Vik Beach or the surrounding tidal pools will serve as our stage, where we’ll capture the celestial dance against the mirrored reflections.

Golden morning light at Reynisfjara beach

DAY 7: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the seventh day of our Iceland photo tour , we will do a sunrise photo shoot from the Black Sand Beach in Vik. From this location, we’ve experienced some of the most spectacular sunrises on our tours. After breakfast, we’ll continue our journey to the Golden Circle.

Iceland’s Golden Circle is a popular route between some of the most visited  locations on the island. We will start photographing the famous Geysir Strokkur , a fountain-type geyser that erupts every 3 to 4 minutes.

Then, we will drive a short distance to Bruarfoss Waterfall , one of the most special waterfalls in Iceland. This waterfall is part of the Bruar River; this river is melted from one of the Icelandic glaciers having a distinctive blue color, which is why Bruarfoss is also called “Iceland’s bluest waterfall”. The scenery around this waterfall is a feast for the eyes, especially at this time of year when the fall colors turn the foliage into vibrant colors .

During the day, we’ll do some editing classes , where we’ll show you the best techniques to bring the photos you’ve taken during the trip to life. During these classes, we’ll teach some basic postprocessing techniques, as well as more advanced content if you want to dive deeper.

If there were Northern Lights that night, we would be back at Bruarfoss or we would take the chance to visit Gullfoss and enjoy the location for ourselves at night.

Black sand beach in Iceland with sea stacks during a sunrise

DAY 8:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the eighth day of our Iceland photography adventure , we will drive to the  mighty Gullfoss   Waterfall , where we will photograph this massive “foss” from different vantage points using long exposures to capture the motion of the water.

After sunrise, we’ll head back to the hotel to have breakfast and pack.

After breakfast, we’ll drive west to Reykjavik and the Reykjanes peninsula to spend the last night of our unforgettable Iceland photo tour.

If the forecast is promising and we can see the aurora,  we will go back to either  Lake Kleifarvatn or  Reykjanesviti  for one last night session.

Active volcanoes, endless glaciers, lush valleys, black sand beaches, mountains & fjords, skies colored by the Aurora Borealis…Iceland is paradise for photographers for good reason. It’s very easy to feel like in a fantasy world when you see and shoot across all those spectacular locations, and this trip will help you discover all the spectacular things that Iceland has to offer.

Expect excitement like in no other trip when we prepare to go out and chase the Northern Lights. This experience can’t be described in images or words; you have to live through it and, believe me, after that you’ll understand why shooting the “green lady” is so mesmerizing and addictive.

Iceland is one of the first places that I started shooting when I first picked up a camera many years ago. I fell so profoundly in love with everything on the island that I’ve been traveling there every year since that initial trip. Iceland is our signature photo tour for many reasons, and I can’t wait to show you the magic of this place!

Iceland Photo Tour Itinerary

Let’s go explore the land of ice and fire., “the locals say that one can experience four seasons in one day in iceland. we may change our plans or timing according to the weather forecast to give you the best experience possible”, day 1 – 2.

We hit the road and move right towards Snæfellsnes peninsula where we will photograph first two iconic locations in Iceland.

The highlight of this part will be the cone-shaped Kirkjufellness Mountain with the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls in the foreground. The location offers spectacular views especially during golden and blue hour but also in the night. On the second day after the sunrise shooting we will also pay a visit to the black wooden church Búðir overlooked by the Snæfellsnes snow-capped mountains.

iceland photo tours photos

Days 2 – 3

We start so-called Golden Circle . Our shutters will be clicking fast at the geothermal area with Strokkur geyser spurting up to 20 meters (65 ft) high at 7-minute intervals. The next ”foss” (waterfall) will be the majestic Gullfoss , the largest volume waterfall in Europe.

During our Iceland Photo Tour, we will be constantly checking the KP index and solar wind activity so that we are always prepared to go out shooting the dance of the Aurora Borealis .

In the sunrise time we will photograph spectacular Reynisdrangar rock formation from the black basalt beach at the southern-most point of Iceland in Vík.

On the opposite side of the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, there is another treat waiting for us – so called Diamond beach  with washed up chunks of ice from the lagoon. This location offers countless opportunities for creative compositions and we will challenge here also our long exposure skills.

iceland photo tours photos

On the east coast, we can’t omit the breathtaking panoramic views of Vestrahorn mountain range. The location offers a huge variety of foreground from grassy sand dunes to perfect reflections in the wet sand.

Next stop will be one of the most beautiful places in Iceland and arguably in the world – Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon with icebergs floating to the sea. And if we are lucky, we might spot seals drifting on one of them.

Buckle up for a truly fascinating experience in a kingdom of ice. With the local guide, we will walk into the ice cave of Europe’s largest glacier  Vatnajökull .

Thanks to the interaction between light and ice we will be surrounded by nature blue walls. It is a true paradise for photographers and it will be undoubtedly one of our most memorable experience whilst in Iceland.

iceland photo tours photos

Day 7 – 8

The days of waterfalls. We start shooting at majestic Skógafoss and continue to Seljalandsfoss . Seljalandsfoss can be walked around and is one of the most fun-to-photograph waterfalls in Iceland. Viewing a waterfall from 360 degrees gives us really infinite composition possibilities.

It’s time to say ”Bless, Ísland” (which means ”Goodbye, Iceland” in Icelandic).

Testimonials | Iceland Photo Tour

iceland photo tours photos

I was a bit nervous regarding the extent of the physical and extreme environmental challenges of photography in Iceland at this time of year.  However, Martin’s planning and attention to the details of the itinerary ensured a very enjoyable trip.   Each and every day was fun and filled with learning regardless of what the weather dished out. Both Martin and Jan were committed to making sure everyone came away with great photos and the knowledge to continue in their photography journey.  If we weren’t outdoors on a shooting adventure, we were indoors learning how to post process our photos to their greatest potential. Regardless of the level of ability, experience or camera equipment, everyone was equally inspired and encouraged by both Martin and Jan with genuine enthusiasm for our learning. I will treasure the memories of this adventure!

iceland photo tours photos

I’m not sure where to begin because this trip was just about perfect. The actual scenery was beautiful, the weather was mild (by Iceland standards), the hotels were well chosen, the food was very good, the photography opportunities were ideal, and the fellowship of the participants was an unexpected bonus. Actually, the entire trip felt like a bonus because we were uncertain what to expect going in. I’m pleased to say that probably every aspect of this trip exceeded our expectations.  Martin is an excellent tour leader. It was apparent that he paid careful attention to all the details necessary to make the trip successful. Both Martin and Jan are excellent photographers and guides. Their personalities and styles fit together well.

We enjoyed the tour so much that we are planning on joining Inscape again in 2019 in New Zealand. We would highly recommend Inscape and trust them for any photo tour!

10 days in Iceland with Inscape Photo Tour has been one of the great trips for me. Martin and Jan opened a door to post-processing world that I never knew could make your photos go from good to wow. Martin and Jan both are passionate about photography and same passion reflects in their exemplary efforts to make sure every participant became friends with their camera and lenses and had great pictures of Iceland. Visiting Ice cave was one of the coolest experiences for most of us on the trip. Thanks to Martin for going an extra mile to reschedule Ice cave tour with another company earlier than the planned one as weather was getting miserable.  As an added benefit, everyone in the group was enthusiastic and fun to travel with.

Iceland is beautiful country and exploring it with Inscape photography tour was a perfect fit. Now, whenever I take a picture whether phone or camera, I am always thinking “Have I clipped the highlights in the sky or how can I make this composition better” 🙂  Hope to explore another part of the world with Inscape Photo Tours in future.

“Attending the workshop in Iceland 2017 with Inscape Photo Tours was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Jan and Martin are not only excellent photographers, but also great friends. They do much more than teaching you the techniques and art of photography. They know how to inspire and motivate the attendants. More than a group, it became a supportive team. I had lots of fun and I´ll never forget it.”

“I had a wonderful experience of joining Martin and Jan on a recent Iceland photography tour. The entire tour was well planned, good accommodations, safe transportation and spacious cars for 2 small groups. Jan and Martin provided knowledgeable in photography as well as the locations for the best ways to get amazing shots. It was a pleasant, fun, a lot of memories photo trip, I enjoyed every moment!”

Inscape Photo Tours provided one fantastic trip. Jan and Martin took us to the beauty of Iceland and we spent twelve days with ourselves and our camera shutter’s being busy catching the world thru their eyes.  No matter what your experience level or equipment that you brought, they could both help you.  Trip more than met my expectations.  Personally, before this trip I primarily took pictures of birds and wildlife.  Taking pictures of landscape and understanding Martin and Jan’s desire to create composition in your picture was ‘eye opening’ for me. I’m truly glad I went on this trip.  At the age of 72 I was able to keep up with the ‘group’ and they pushed us to have as many experiences with our camera as possible.  My time with my camera will be better, in the future, because of what I learned and experienced with Inscape during this trip.

Inscape Photo Tour to Iceland is a trip I would recommend to others. In November, the days are short, but the experience. Guide, Pedro, took us to all his favorite sites while we traveled the “Golden Circle.” Safety was a big priority, when around glaciers, ocean, in ice caves, and he had a very good knowledge of when Northern Lights were out and when there was weather or cloud cover. We took in lots of waterfalls, glaciers, and black sand beaches. Daily itinerary was great.

It was my second trip to Iceland with Inscape, and I came home with lots of pictures, new friends, and great memories. To be there was everything.

iceland photo tours photos

It was a photography trip for the history books!  Each day was filled with portfolio worthy images, a perfect combination of destination, subject, lighting and composition.  Martin and Jan provided amazing guidance both at location and in post-editing to help me take the best images ever.  The trip was filled with adventure, laughs and thrills.  The memories and friendships our entire group made will last a lifetime.   I’m looking forward to many more photographic adventures with Inscape Photo!

I am thankful that i was able to participate in your photo tour in Iceland. I was both a great learning experience and a chance for me to get out of my comfort zone. The student to teacher ratio was excellent! You and Jan were able to spend time with us, teaching, correcting, and sharing with us your expertise. I am glad that aside from the technical aspects which confuse me sometimes, you also taught us the value of the story behind the picture. I really appreciated that!

OUR ICELAND PHOTOGRAPHER GUIDES

Dani Fernandez Photographer Guide

Dani Fernandez

Born in Barcelona but with northern blood, he began to become interested in photography in 2019 as a result of his admiration for nature. It would end up becoming his great passion, which would lead him to discover the most beautiful places on the planet.

Mountain areas are his specialty, with the Pyrenees and the Alps being his two favorite places. There, he combines his passion for climbing and mountaineering with photography. He was a participant in our first tours, and now he is guiding groups as a specialist after a few trips.

Hugo Valle Photographer Guide

Hugo Valle is an Asturian landscape photographer living in the Aragonese Pyrenees who began his career in the world of photography in 2011, with the help of a modest bridge camera. From 2012 to the present, he has tried tirelessly to combine his dedication to photography with his passion for traveling. Which has allowed him to know and capture the most beautiful landscapes around the world; discovering in the cold and snowy areas, the mountains and the Asturian coast their favorite settings.

Jabi Sanz Photographer Guide

I have been fascinated by the possibilities of photography since my trip to Iceland in Aug 2017. I grew up in Pamplona, a small city in the North of Spain. My parents always used to take me to explore nature, not far from my city. We have the incredible Pyrenees just an hour from home. But I never had a camera or a passion for photography till that trip to Iceland, where I bought my current camera. That country blew my mind and now I can’t live without photography. I think photography makes me connect to nature different from what I have ever experienced before. Nature is my inspiration, with all the beauty, variety of colors, sounds and compositions. Nature has made me travel and get to know places that I didn’t think before I would go.

Bruarfoss waterfall Workshop

Which currency is used?

In Iceland, the currency is the Iceland Krona. Once there you can pay also all with a credit card. Although you can’t pay in euros , you can convert once there to Iceland Krona in the same airport. We suggest changing around 100-200 euros or dollars the first day and use your travel debit card there.

Highland-Iceland

Is safe to drive?

We can read on the internet that driving in Iceland  is not safe. But the reality is that  Iceland has a very good road , especially the Ring Road. Just to arrive at a few locations, you can find dirt roads, and of course, to arrive at interior locations you can need a special vehicle. Anyway, for most of the famous locations, you can arrive easily in a normal car. During winter, and when conditions are not favorable, drive-in Iceland can be not safe. This way we recommend you travel with an expert guide during this season.

Hvitserkur Northen Lights Green Reflection - ICELAND

Do I need a Visa to visit?

No, you can enter just with your passport if you have American citizenship. Also, Iceland is inside the Schengen area, which means that you just need your national id, but we suggest also bringing your passport.

Eystrahorn, Iceland

How to visit a doctor? Are vaccinations necessary?

If you are a European citizen we suggest getting the European Health Insurance Card . It´s free and you ask for it on the internet. No vaccinations of any kind are required to enter Iceland.

Do we visit Reykjavik?

Our Iceland photography workshops are focus on landscape photography . We spend the last day usually in Reykjavik before finish the tour. But we do not make a classical tourist tour around the capital. Even if half of the population lives here, Reykjavik is not a big city.

If you are interested to photograph with more time, you can ask us for an extension of the photo workshop. During the extension, we will drive also around the Golden Ring.

Is an iceland photography tour worth it.

If you are still wondering if Iceland is worth visiting, our answer is absolute YES . Iceland is an incredible country in the world. Unique locations every single step and spot you see made the island a paradise for all nature lovers and especially photographers. We are sure, that you will love it and you will want to come back soon.

Is Iceland very expensive?

Yes, Iceland can be expensive for meals and tours. But there are ways to save! Look into cooking some meals, exploring the stunning free natural wonders, and finding budget-friendly accommodation options.

What is the best season to photograph Iceland?

The best season for Iceland photography depends on what you want to capture! Summer offers warm weather, wildflowers, and the midnight sun for endless shooting. Winter brings dramatic landscapes, the Northern Lights, and unique ice cave formations. Shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer colorful foliage and good chances of aurora sightings, but can be unpredictable weather-wise.

What is the most photographed place in Iceland?

I recently did a photo tour in Iceland with Eduardo, the owner of Photo World Tours. The trip was amazing. Yes, Eduardo is a world class photographer, but to be honest there are a lot of great photographers out there. It takes more than just photographic expertise to lead a tour – particularly in the conditions of Iceland – and Eduardo has all of the talents, insight, and knowledge to do that, and on top of it all, he’s just a good guy who is really funny as well (a trait that was appreciated on some of the long drives between locations).

I was very impressed with Eduardo’s knowledge of the shooting locations, but also the small logistical details that surround the actual photography… such as when the last restaurant closed in a small town in a distant location (you don’t want to come back from a sunset shoot and find out you can’t eat until the next morning!). He also led the group with a firm but kind hand.. something that’s important when you’re working with six strangers with very different personalities.

And of course, his photographic expertise is beyond compare. His knowledge of composition and creating art is as amazing as is his technical abilities in both shooting and editing. He was very good about walking us thru the best way to shoot something, the right lens to capture it, and gave us detailed instructions with the things that were new to us like capturing the aurora.

All in all, I can’t say enough good things about Eduardo and Photo World Tours. He exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend him for a tour of anywhere, anytime.

Unforgettable trip to Iceland, with the company of a group that, although international, ended up being a great group, it took me with a great experience and new friends. We went with Eduardo Fuster as a guide and in addition to telling us the best places and tips for photography, we also had our talks about topics unrelated to photography, wanting to repeat

An incredible experience. Thank you very much Eduardo for making everything so easy.

A few weeks ago I took a trip to Iceland with this company and it was really fabulous. They gave us support and all the information we needed prior to the trip and during the trip the person in charge guided us, accompanied us, advised and taught us in any aspect related to the trip and photography. It has been a fantastic journey. I would repeat with Hugo and Edu. All the best

Experience first hand the reason why Iceland is a world renowned paradise for landscape photographers!

Iceland is a unique jewel thanks to the variety of its landscape heritage. Majestic waterfalls, geysers, floating icebergs, surreal blue ice sculptures, epic seascapes and picturesque coastal roads with stunning views onto the deep blue ocean. From sunrise to sunset you will not miss a chance to capture the unique magic of the fascinating winter light at the edge of the Arctic Circle.

This tour offers the ultimate chance to improve your photographic skills and expand your portfolio with unique landscape shots.

Day 1 : Arrival in Reykjavik

The journey to Reykjavik is individual.  We greet you at 2pm at Keflavík International Airport before we make our way to our first accommodation in Snæfellsnes National Park, which we will reach in the late afternoon.  With an introduction to landscape photography and a short get-to-know-you round, we prepare for the next few days.  If the weather conditions allow it, after dinner together we will focus on the first spots near our hotel and practice taking night shots.

iceland photo tours photos

Day 2 : Snaefellsness National Par

Our photographic journey of discovery begins in a comfortable minibus from Reykjavik to the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula. The sparsely populated peninsula reproduces all the charms of the big island in a very small area, which is why it has been called “Island in Miniature”, Snaefellsness is known for its rugged basaltic south coast with sea stacks that rise from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, but on top of it it’s known for one of the most epic landmarks of the entire island, the Mount Kirkufell with its iconic waterfalls. “A mountain shaped like an arrowhead”, that’s how it was described in the world famous TV series “Game of Thrones”. We will look for the best angles to frame the Mountain according to the conditions of the winter landscape, and hopefully enjoy the northern lights dancing above us at night.

iceland photo tours photos

Day 3 :The Golden Circle route

We leave the Snaefellsness peninsula for the famous “Golden Circle” route, winding through three equally breathtaking locations in southwest Iceland: the Þingvellir National Park, the Geyser Geothermal Area and the Gullfoss Waterfall. We’ll dwell on the classic views of the partly frozen waterfall, which in winter it has something magical due to the contrasty bluish water with the pale tones of the snowy surrounding landscape.  At sunrise we’ll walk around the vapours rising from the surreal vivid coloured ground made of hot pools, mud pots and fumaroles, where we will have the chance to photograph the famous geyser Strokkur, which “erupts” about every ten minutes and sprays vapor and hot water as high as 20m towards the sky.

iceland photo tours photos

Day 4 : Southern waterfalls and Vik ì Myrdal

We make out drive to famous waterfalls that make Iceland one of the world’s most popular destinations for landscape photography: Seljalandfoss, Skógafoss and the hidden waterfall of Gljufrabui.

Although they’re far from having the maximum water flow in winter, the surrounding Christmassy landscape, with snow-covered frozen ground and crystalline icicles, makes the waterfalls a true winter highlight.

We reach Vík í Mýrdal in time to catch the best light from the cliffs above the black beach of Reynisfjara. With fantastic surf at sunset, we let ourselves be inspired by the beautiful view of the Reynisdrangar basalt columns. These iconic rocks are of volcanic origin and are said to be petrified trolls.

iceland photo tours photos

Day 5 : Vatnajökull National Park

We catch the sunrise vibe of the coastal landscape of Vík before enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel and leave to one of the most idyllic locations of the trip: the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. Due to its breathtaking beauty it has become one of the country’s most popular attractions and is one of Iceland’s natural crown jewels. Huge icebergs break off the glacier and lie scattered in the bay, while tiny blocks of ice glisten in the sun like diamonds along the black sand beach. This is how the beach got its nickname: Diamond Beach. The glacier is the Breiðamerkurjökull at the foot of the Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Iceland. The area itself – together with the other smaller glacier bays nearby – offers endless creative possibilities for photography at any time of day, with long and short shutter speeds.

Next day we will enjoy a private tour to explore a true Icelandic winter highlight, the bluish ice caves that form along the southern front of the Vatnajökull glacier.

iceland photo tours photos

Day 6 : Vestrahorn and Stokksnes bay

After the last sunrise in the idyllic bay of Jökulsárlón, we now drive to the easternmost point of our journey, to the lively small town of Höfn on the edge of the East Fjords. Höfn lies at the foot of Vatnajökull next to a harbour which once gave the idyllic place its importance as a fishing village. Late afternoon and sunset are spent in the bay of Stokksnes in front of the mighty mountain Vestrahorn, which is considered another absolute top address and one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland. Vestrahorn is one of the numerous rocky peaks of the extinct volcano Klifatindur on the Stokksnes headland, which protrudes particularly strikingly from the mountain massif. There are great motives in this dreamlike scenery – especially in winter when the Vestrahorn rises majestically from the pitch-black dune plain. The headland itself is littered with small and large sand dunes, which together with the pitch-black sand and withered blades of grass form an intense contrast to the snow-covered mountain slopes. We will explore the most beautiful views around the bay of Skokksnes, playing with reflections in front of the panorama of the 756 meters high Vestrahorn, which is reflected in the calm sea water. If conditions are favourable we will return here at night to capture the northern lights.

iceland photo tours photos

Day 7 : RETURN TO REYKJAVÍK

Unfortunately, our photo tour is already coming to an end – so this morning we have to make our way back towards Reykjavík.  Along our route we will take photos at lesser-known, epic locations close to our route and maybe we’ll have another chance to see dancing Northern Lights – in a wonderful place – far away from the annoying artificial lights of the city, before we finish the last one Spend the night in our comfortable hotel near Keflavik Airport.  At the end of our photo tour, we enjoy Iceland over dinner and review our photographic experiences.

Day 8 : Vestrahorn and Stokksnes bay8

Unforgettable mornings, evenings and nights let us tell stories that will remain in our memories for a long time to come.  With a lot of impressions and photos in the camera, we start our journey home today.

I would definitely recommend Pall to my friends who like photography and want to see all the aspects about the stunning nature of Iceland! Thanks Pall for organizing us such a wonderful trip!

Pall knew the best spots to shoot that perfect photo and the perfect time of day so he planned our trip around the limited daylight hours. One of the positive features of a private tour is that we never felt rushed and the whole 3 days was a very pleasant at your own pace journey. Pall made sure we were comfortable and safe at all times and we do appreciate that very much.

The icing on the cake is that Páll is also a great, very well known photographer and I am a photographer and a blogger, writing about my travels around the world. Not only I had a great trip, but I also learned a lot thanks to him! Should we go back to Iceland, we won't hesitate contacting Páll Jökull Pétursson again, and we definitely recommend his impeccable service to everyone.

Images and footage of Iceland’s spectacular landscapes and dramatic features draw millions of guests every year; it is little wonder, therefore, why many shutterbugs flock to the island, hoping to add some unique and beautiful photos to their portfolio. Whether an amateur photographer using a camera-phone or an expert with professional equipment, guests can enjoy countless opportunities to capture pictures of Iceland on film.

Top Photo Tours

Small-group 3-hour early morning ice caving tour at vatnajokull glacier with photo package, small-group 4-hour northern lights tour with expert aurora hunter and photographer, beautiful photography day tour at snaefellsnes peninsula with transfer from reykjavik.

While it is possible to take some excellent photographs without tailoring your holiday to building your portfolio, those who come with such an agenda will find plenty of options to help them out. This article will provide tips, tricks and tour suggestions to aid any planning an itinerary in Iceland tailored to photography.

Northern Lights photography brings many people to Iceland.

Before getting into the best itineraries for shutterbugs, it is important to know a few things about photography in Iceland to help you get the best images possible. With the following tips in mind, you can better plan a trip that avoids common pitfalls that many guests do not see coming.

The winters of Iceland present very unique photographic opportunities.

Iceland is a country of dramatic seasonal contrasts. In the depths of winter, the landscapes are covered in a blanket of snow, the spectacular features are decorated with ice, the sun only emerges for around four hours at a time, and the night skies are often lit with the Northern Lights. In the height of summer, meanwhile, the sun never sets, allowing you to sightsee and explore regardless of the hour.

Photography lovers coming to Iceland should, therefore, consider the kind of images they want to take before arriving. Landscape photographers eager to picture the vast, remote Highlands will find accessing them very difficult in winter, whereas those looking to capture the iconic crystal blue ice caves beneath Vatnajökull glacier or the swirling aurora borealis must plan their trip for this season.

The capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik, pictured under the midnight sun from an aerial perspective.

There is no best time of year for photography in Iceland; it all depends on what images you want to take. Many shutterbugs make multiple trips to the country, to make the most of the seasonal opportunities or take vastly different pictures of the same location.

Those travelling in winter must, of course, take extra care with expensive equipment. Ensure you bring waterproof covers in case of rain, and a portable battery charger can be incredibly useful considering how quickly the cold can drain battery life.

It should go without saying, but the northern lights in Iceland can only be seen at night.

The difference between an average photograph and one that speaks of the true beauty and drama of a location can depend entirely on the time of the day that it is taken. Photography experts often refer to the golden hour, referring to the hours around sunrise and sunset, as the best time to take pictures.

In Iceland, however, this ‘golden hour’ is not quite so simple; in winter, all the hours of daylight are around sunrise and sunset, and through the nights of summer, the sun sinks low enough to provide this lighting effect.

The Diamond Beach in south-east Iceland in the golden hour of photography.

That is not to say, however, that it is futile to take photographs at any other time; in many cases in Iceland, the opposite is true. At sunrise, you may find your images of this country’s spectacular glaciers to be somewhat dull; to capture their shimmering shades of white and blue, it is often best to photograph them during the sunniest part of the day. To shoot features such as Kirkjufell mountain under the Northern Lights, you’ll obviously have to wait for night to fall.

Photography lovers, therefore, should ensure that they plan their journeys to either hit their locations at the opportune time or spend plenty of time at each site; the latter is preferable, considering Iceland’s volatile weather. It is often a good idea to plan multiple trips to your favorite locations to capture them at the best possible time of day, which is particularly easy when traveling areas such as the South Coast , as you will go back and forth along the same road.

As mentioned, Iceland’s weather is unpredictable and fickle, to the extent that the country has a saying in reference to it; ‘if you don’t like Iceland’s weather, wait five minutes.’ While this unpredictability can lead to the occasional disappointment when it comes to photography, there are several precautions you can take to avoid this.

The first, of course, is to keep track of the forecast. While not 100% reliable, Iceland’s weather website is regularly updated and the best way of determining what sort of pictures you will be able to take on any given day. It is particularly useful in winter for those planning to capture Northern Lights, as it reveals the cloud cover across the country and the aurora forecast on a scale of zero to nine.

The aurora forecast and cloud cover forecasts are essential for those seeking the northern lights.

Secondly, make sure you take equipment suited to all kinds of weather. This does not just include the aforementioned waterproof covers and battery chargers but also the correct clothing. With warm, waterproof clothing on hand, you can comfortably wait out a bad spell until conditions improve.

The final tip regarding the weather in Iceland in terms of photography is to embrace it. You may have been hoping to capture the Highlands under the gleaming sun, but with an open mind, you might find that your photographs of them under ominous black clouds have a different but equally spectacular kind of beauty.

To photograph puffins in Iceland, it is useful to have a telescopic lens.

Yes, Iceland’s nature is incredible; yes, you want the very best pictures of it as possible; and yes, you want your images to be different from all the others that have been taken. This does not necessarily mean, however, that you need to bring every lens, tripod and other accessory with you every time you go out to take photos. In fact, this can often be detrimental to your experience.

Many of Iceland’s most spectacular locations, particularly in the Highlands, require a certain amount of hiking to reach, so you don’t want to be slowed down by a load of heavy equipment you won’t use; a wide-angle lens should do the job fine. If taking a whale or puffin watching tour out on the sea, just bringing a telescopic lens may be the best; any extras brought along are at risk from being damaged by the rocking boat or erosive seawater.

A long exposure and tripod can help you capture the movement of waterfalls in Iceland.

This is not to say, however, that you should attempt to travel everywhere with as little equipment as possible. Those seeking to photograph the northern lights, or else capture a waterfall with a long exposure will be very grateful to have a tripod on hand to ensure their camera remains as still as possible.

If your photography locations are right by the roads you are travelling on, as they likely will be on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and South Coast, then you can bring all your equipment and leave what you don’t need in your car or tour bus.

If you are an amateur photographer merely looking to capture this beautiful country on camera for personal pleasure and social media, then, of course, a smartphone will do the job in the vast majority of cases.

Guides on Northern Lights tours can help you photograph the auroras in Iceland.

Many sightseeing tours around Iceland have to stick to a reasonably strict agenda, limiting your time at certain locations and usually only allowing you to visit them once a day. While such tours may suit the amateur photographer, those seeking to make the most of every photo opportunity should consider a different kind of excursion.

Photography workshops are perfect for those who seek to improve their skill set and portfolio under the guidance of professional photographers. These experts know the landscapes, are happy to help you with your compositions and post-production, and will allow you plenty of time at the most photogenic locations. Those who would rather travel independently, meanwhile, will find a range of slow-paced self-drive tours that are designed, in part, with photography enthusiasts in mind.

Below, we have compiled a list of the best of these options to help you find the perfect tour for you.

Before discussing these excursions, however, it should be noted that those unfamiliar with camera settings hoping to capture the aurora borealis will benefit enormously from taking a tour, as northern lights guides can fiddle with your equipment to help you get the best images possible.

Top Northern Lights Tours & Holidays

Photography workshops in Iceland help you to build your portfolio and skill sets.

Photography workshops are, without a doubt, the best choice for travelers seeking to improve their skills with a camera and get the very best images possible. There is a wide range of options based on the time of year and geographical location, but all have certain advantages over less specific tours.

Firstly, all guests on these excursions will be granted two seats on the bus, allowing you to bring as much equipment as you like, and pick and choose which parts you will take at each location. The bus, of course, will be driven for you, allowing you to spend every minute focused on your surroundings and images.

Your photography guides will be award-winning experts who will not only assist you on location but provide you with lectures so that you can go home with a brand new skill set as well as a vast new portfolio. They will also provide you with post-processing videos so that you can use modern technology to improve your skills even further.

Many photography tours spend a day at least around the Diamond Beach in Iceland.

During these tours, your accommodation will also be planned in advance, taking the stress off planning a holiday.

Photography lovers coming to Iceland in winter will no doubt want to capture two of the country’s most incredible and awe-inspiring phenomena: the northern lights and the crystal blue ice caves. For them, this four-day winter photography workshop is by far the best option. Every night you will set out in hunt of the auroras, providing as good a chance as possible at shooting them, and the short days will be packed full of spectacular sites.

Other than the mesmerizingly beautiful ice caves, which draw thousands of guests every year due to how rare and unique they are, you will get to photograph a range of sites along the South Coast. These include the haunting black sand beach of Reynisfjara , renowned for its powerful waves and dramatic geology; the stunning waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss ; the incredible rock arch of Dyrhólaey ; and ‘the crown jewel of Iceland’s nature’, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon .

Top South Coast Tours

Svartifoss is a beautiful waterfall, pictured in winter, in south Iceland.

While all of these features are beautiful throughout the year, the winter adds a dramatic flair to each of them, with snow stretching down to the sea, ice adorning the rocks around the waterfalls, and dark skies casting ominous shadows across the landscapes. You will also get to visit most of these locations twice, as you travel back and forth along the South Coast, to shoot them under different conditions.

  • See also: Top 11 Frozen Waterfalls in Iceland to See in Winter

As a bonus, you will also get to photograph the three iconic sites of the world-famous Golden Circle route: Þingvellir National Park , Gullfoss waterfall and Strokkur , a geyser in Haukadalur Valley . In winter conditions, all look like they were pulled from a fantasy novel.

Four days in a decent amount of time to capture these features in winter, but Iceland’s fickle weather can mean that the Northern Lights do not show, and the ice caves are occasionally closed due to flooding. Those who want to provide themselves with every opportunity to capture these phenomena could instead look to this eight-day tour .

Dyrholaey is a rock arch on the South Coast with many puffins in summer.

While it covers the same sites as its shorter counterpart, it has greater flexibility in terms of when you will enter the ice caves, and of course, four more nights for aurora hunting. It also lets you better explore and shoot the aforementioned sites, at different times of the day under different conditions.

While capturing the northern lights and ice caves should be on every shutterbug’s bucket list, some may be more interested in the photographic opportunities provided by the endless summer days. Tours taken in summer provide more time at each location, allow you to fit more sites into your day, and do not come with the worry that the Northern Lights may not show, or the ice caves may be inaccessible.

Summer photography workshops can be enjoyed by guests no matter how long their stay. This three-day workshop , for example, is perfect for those who are only coming to Iceland for a brief period. Like the tours mentioned above, you will travel back and forth along the South Coast, but rather than spending a day in the ice caves, you will have added hours capturing the incredible icebergs of Jökulsárlón and the Diamond Beach .

Iceland's glacier lagoons beg to be photographed.

Those staying for a little longer may be more inclined to take this eight-day workshop . Following the same itinerary as the eight-day winter tour, this option will dramatically improve your skills due to the sheer amount of time you will get to spend at each location. Unlike the three-day summer workshop, this option will also provide you with a chance to shoot the sites of the Golden Circle in their verdant summer colors.

For those staying in Iceland for just under a fortnight in summer, the most immersive photography workshop you can enjoy is this twelve-day option that fully encircles this beautiful island. To make it even more special, it is conducted in part throughout the bright nights, not only providing you with the ‘golden hour’ throughout all your shoots, but also allowing you to avoid all the crowds for the perfect composition.

When traveling through West Iceland, you will get to shoot the many incredible features along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, such as Kirkjufell (often called the most photographed mountain in Iceland), the towering basalt pillars of Lóndrangar , and the iconic twin-peaked glacier Snæfellsjökull .

Kirkjufell is a fantastic subject to photograph in west Iceland.

North Iceland boasts just as much diverse beauty, with subjects that range from the rhino-shaped rock Hvítserkur to the bubbling mud-pits of Námaskarð Pass , the serene lakes of Mývatn to the rapid Goðafoss waterfall .

This workshop will also take you well off the beaten track to parts of the country few get to visit. East Iceland , for example, is a sparsely populated but incredibly beautiful region, with plunging fjords, towering mountains and unmatched seascapes. The Highlands, meanwhile, are all but uninhabited, and a perfect place to capture Iceland’s nature at its most raw and dramatic.

Of course, you’ll also get to shoot the sites of the South Coast.

A bonus of taking a photography workshop in summer is the fact that you will have more opportunities to shoot wildlife; puffins and many other seabirds, for example, only nest in Iceland from May to September.

Self drive tours allow you to photograph Iceland at your own pace.

While photography workshops are undoubtedly the best way to improve your skills and raise the standard of your portfolio, they are not for everyone. If you are more inclined to drive yourself, without worrying about other guests and paying a little extra for professional guidance, then photography enthusiasts are encouraged to book a slow-paced self-drive tour.

While some self-drive tours are tailored to those who want to see as many sites as possible in as short a time as possible, there are many options better suited for photographers who wish to take their time. Self-drives have the added bonus of flexibility; so long as you arrive at your pre-determined accommodation for the night, you can spend as much time at the features of your choice as you like.

If coming to Iceland in winter for just a few days, this three-day self-drive provides plenty of opportunity to shoot the incredible sites of the west and south. You will get to photograph the haunting lava landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula , practice your urban photography skills in Reykjavík, and travel the Golden Circle. On your final day, you are free to take a day tour across the beautiful South Coast, or else hike further into nature to shoot the geothermal phenomena at Reykjadalur valley .

The Reykjanes Peninsula has a beautiful coastline, begging to be photographed.

Though the tour is tailored to those eager to make the most of bathing in Iceland’s hot springs, it can easily be adjusted to focus on photography.

Those with a little longer stay in Iceland in winter could look to make even more of the sites of the west by booking this six-day tour . For three days, you will be able to slowly explore and shoot the locations of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and its surroundings, while also having plenty of time to photograph the Reykjanes Peninsula, the capital city and the Golden Circle.

Summer travelers will find an even wider range of slow-paced tours that allow you to spend hours a day shooting at your favorite locations. This eight-day option encourages you to truly immerse yourself in the country’s west and south and offers tours that provide some unique shooting opportunities.

Urban landscape photography is possible in Iceland's capital city.

You can try your hand at wildlife photography on a whale-watching tour, shoot landscapes from the heights of Sólheimajökull glacier, and capture the icebergs of Jökulsárlón up close on a boat tour, to name but a few examples.

A similar ten-day summer self-drive will grant you an extra day marveling over the countless wonders of Snæfellsnes and provide you with a day to explore and photograph the many cultural and architectural sites of Reykjavík .

This twelve-day summer self-drive , meanwhile, grants you even more time at the glacier lagoon, and two free days in the capital. You can use these days to improve your urban photography, or else to take a tour from the city that will provide you with unique shooting opportunities.

Particularly of note are a helicopter ride over the nearby geothermal areas, allowing you to take some spectacular aerial pictures, and the Inside the Volcano tour, where you can shoot the incredible, magnificently coloured interior of an old magma chamber.

The Highlands of Iceland are best photographed in summer.

Photography lovers in Iceland have a wealth of potential itineraries that will allow them to shoot this country’s beautiful landscapes and features without having to rush. Whether you are seeking to build a professional portfolio, learn new skills or simply bring some colour to your Instagram page, tailoring an itinerary that suits your desires and needs has never been easier.

A bus with 27 people in it crashed in the south of Iceland yesterday. All 26 passengers and the driver were injured, Mbl.is reports , with some injuries considered “major” by police.

All transported to hospitals

The bus rolled over on Rangárvallavegur in the vicinity of Stokkalækur shortly before 5 PM yesterday. All aboard were transported to hospitals, some to Landspítali in Reykjavík, but others to Hella or Selfoss.

The Icelandic Coast Guard dispatched two helicopters to the scene to transport 7 people to Reykjavík. A large number of ambulances arrived on the scene as well.

Cause to be determined

Everyone aboard the bus was an Icelandic citizen. “We’re going over their injuries,” said Jón Gunnar Þórhallsson, chief superintendent with the South coast police. “It ranges from minor to major injuries.”

The bus was operated by GTS buses. The cause of the accident has yet to be determined.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs indictment looms as feds prepare to bring accusers before grand jury: report

Federal prosecutors are preparing to bring Sean “Diddy” Combs’ accusers in front of a grand jury, indicating that the US Justice Department is moving toward seeking an indictment against the embattled music mogul, according to a new report.

Witnesses have been notified by investigators that they could be called to testify in front of a federal grand jury in New York City, a source told CNN Wednesday.

The Bad Boy Records founder has been hit with eight civil lawsuits , seven of which have accused him of sexual assault. His on-again, off-again girlfriend Cassie Ventura was the first to accuse him of rape and repeated physical abuse in a disturbing suit filed in November 2023.

A second source told the outlet that investigators are being thorough and taking their time to ensure that the potential indictment is “bulletproof.”

A spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) declined to comment to CNN on the existence of a grand jury but noted the agency’s investigation remains ongoing. Combs’ attorney didn’t immediately return Page Six’s request for comment.

The rapper, 54, and Ventura, 37, settled out of court within one day of her filing suit, but surveillance footage of him violently beating her in a hotel hallway in 2016 leaked earlier this month.

Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones

In the video, the “Me & U” singer is seen exiting a hotel room with several bags, walking quickly to the elevators. She is wearing a black hoodie over her head, jeans and sneakers. Shortly after, her then-boyfriend appears in nothing but a towel and runs toward her. He grabs her by the neck before kicking her while she lay on the floor.

Ventura addressed the shocking footage for the first time last week, writing on Instagram, “Thank you for all the love and support from my family, friends, strangers and those I have yet to meet. The outpouring of love has created a place for my younger self to settle and feel safe now, but this is only the beginning.”

She continued, “Domestic violence is THE issue. It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become.”

The R&B performer told her fans that she remains on a “healing journey.”

Combs, for his part, issued an apology days after the horrendous video went viral, calling the incident the one of the “darkest times” of his life.

“I was f—ked up. I mean, I hit rock bottom, but I make no excuses,” he shared on social media.

“My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I’m disgusted.”

However, prior to the surveillance footage surfacing, Combs had vehemently denied Ventura’s allegations of abuse and rape, calling them “offensive and outrageous.”

The Department of Homeland Security raided Combs’ Los Angeles and Miami estates in March in connection to allegations of sex trafficking, money laundering and illegal drugs.
