Koh Panyee Thailand: the ultimate travel guide

This post is about Koh Panyee. Koh Panyee is a small traditional fishing village in the Phang Nga Bay in Southern Thailand. It is an island that is surrounded by stunning natural scenery, including towering limestone cliffs and crystal-clear waters.

Koh Panyee was one of my favorite places in Thailand. While most people visit on a quick day trip on a tour through the Phang Nga Bay I decided to spend a night in the village. I am glad I did.

Once the tour groups leave, Koh Panyee becomes a quiet and peaceful place that offers a unique insight into the village life of this unique place.

Koh Panyee

Why visit Koh Panyee in Thailand

Koh Panyee is special for several reasons. First of all, it is a floating village with houses built on stilts. The village is attached to a limestone rock formation and is a cluster of homes and roads that float in the sea of the Phang Nga Bay.

Second of all, Koh Panyee is a Muslim village with its own unique traditions. Muslims are a minority in Thailand and the culture on the island is completely different from the mainland.

Koh Panyee village was built 200 years ago by a group of Malay fishermen from Java in Indonesia. According to local legend, the fishermen were searching for a new home after their boat got caught in a storm, and they came across the island of Koh Panyee.

Initially, the fishermen lived on their boats, but over time they began to construct their homes on stilts over the water. Foreigners could not own any land and therefore they built their village in the water. The village gradually grew, and the fishermen began to prosper through their fishing trade. The story reminded me a bit of the Vietnamese fishing villages in the Mekong in Cambodia .

Although Koh Panyee is now also a popular tourist destination, the main source of income is still fishing. Most tourists come for a short period of time as part of a tour through the Phang Nga Bay. For a couple of hours a day, the people open up their souvenir shops, but as soon as the tour groups are gone they return to their normal life.

There are only a few places to stay on the island, but I really recommend you do. Seeing the island without any tourists is a completely different experience. Furthermore, the sunset is amazing.

Koh Panyee

The best things to do at Koh Panyee

There are not a lot of things to do in Koh Panyee. Part of the charm is its relaxed atmosphere. One day and one night will be enough to get a good sense of the town and the people. The village is not that big and it is easy to explore on foot. Alternatively, you can also rent a kayak to paddle around the village

Koh Panyee Market

Koh Panyee is a bit of a messy and chaotic village. The center is a maze of small alleys lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. Once the tour groups leave most of them close down. This is the time to explore Koh Panyee in peace and quiet.

Luckily, not everything closes down. The local grocery shops and a few restaurants are still open. I recommend you try the local chicken satay that you can buy in the market.

Koh Panyee market area

Floating football fields

One of the main things to do in Koh Panyee are the floating football fields. There are three of them and the Panyee soccer team won a couple of championships in Thailand. In the evening you can see the kids playing at the football fields.

Koh Panyee Mosque

For a long time, the Indonesian fishermen could not own land in Thailand. Meanwhile a new generation was born in the village and as soon as they could own some of the land they used it to build a mosque.

Watching the sunset

Watching the sunset over the picturesque Phang Nga Bay is a very good reason to stay in Koh Panyee. The village offers beautiful views over the sea with the limestone rock formations in the back.

Phang Nga Bay

Koh Panyee is in the midst of Phang Nga Bay. Although you have beautiful views on Phang Nga Bay from the village I can recommend a kayak or boat tour to explore everything it has to offer.

Phang Nga Bay is known for its stunning scenery, which includes limestone cliffs, emerald-green waters, and lush green islands. The bay is also home to several caves, lagoons, and mangrove forests.

Most people visit Koh Panyee as part of a tour through the beautiful Phang Nga Bay. There are many tour operators out there. You can book tours in Phuket or in the town of Pang Nga. In my experience Phang Nga offers more value for money.

Phang Nga Bay

James Bond Rock

All tours in the Phang Nga Bay visit the famous James Bond Island, which was featured in the 1974 James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun.” This small island is dominated by a tall limestone rock sticking out of the water.

James Bond island

Phu Khao Khian cave

My favorite stop on my Phang Nga Bay tour was actually not the James Bond island, but the Phu Khao Khian cave. There are several caves in the Phang Nga Bay, but this cave has 3000 year old drawings from crocodiles, sharks and other sea creatures. You can enter the cave by boat or kayak.

Koh Panyee Travel tips

Where to stay.

I stayed at the James Bond Bungalow . A basic, but lovely place to stay with friendly people. They have a nice balcony terras that looks out over the sea and the Phang Nga Bay. From there you can witness the beautiful sunset and sunrise.

James Bond Bungalows at Koh Panyee

Where to eat

Once the tourists leave, there is not that much choice. I had a lovely chicken satay in the market. It is of course also a great place to eat sea food with delicious Thai fish curries.

How to get there

The best way to get to Koh Panyee is by a Phang Nga Bay tour. Even if you want to stay on the island, most tour operators are flexible enough that they can easily organize this. I arranged for the boat driver to drop me off in the evening and then another boat driver picked me up the next morning before he picked up a new group of tourists at Phang Nga. I do recommend you to explore the caves and lagoons at Phang Nga Bay as well. .

If you really want to travel just to Koh Panyee there are longtail boats from the Surakul pier at Phang Nga. This option is not necessarily cheaper, especially when you travel alone.

Stilt homes at Koh Panyee

When to visit

The best time to visit Koh Panyee Island in Thailand is between November and April, which is the dry season. During this time, the weather is generally sunny and dry, and the sea is calm, making it ideal for water activities such as swimming and kayaking. The temperatures are also more pleasant, ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius (70s-80s Fahrenheit).

The rainy season runs from May to October, with the heaviest rainfall usually occurring in September and October. During this time, the sea can be rough, and some water activities may be restricted. However, the upside of visiting during the rainy season is that the island tends to be less crowded, and prices may be lower.

Sustainable travel

I already mentioned that during the day, Koh Panyee is no longer the quiet fishing village it once was. Tourism has both good and bad impacts on the community. It’s important for visitors to respect the local customs and traditions, and to support local businesses in a responsible and sustainable way.

First about the culture. Koh Panyee is a muslim island and therefore try to wear modest clothes and keep your bikini for Phuket. Most people only visit for a couple of hours with little knowledge about the unique culture of this village. It also means that most money goes to the tour operators. By staying and eating on the village you can make sure some profit goes to the villagers as well.

At last, take your trash back to the mainland. There is no proper waste management. Plastic pollution is a big problem in the Phang Nga Bay disrupting marine life and ecosystems.

Koh Panyi Village in Phang Nga

What is Koh Panyi Village?

Koh Panyi (Koh Panyee) is a surprising village almost entirely built on stilts in Phang Nga Bay near the famous James Bond Island and is one of the usual places to see when in Phuket . Koh Panyi is a unique and exciting site to discover, but it can be hectic, especially at lunchtime because of the many seafood restaurants welcoming visitors. The trick is to get there early and be the only visitor in the village!

koh panyee phuket 1

If you want to have Koh Panyi almost for yourself, rent a car and drive early to the Surakul pier in Phang Nga , then rent a longtail boat which will take you there within 20 minutes. It’s not cheap, maybe 1,500 baht, but it is worth it if you want to have a lot of time to take photos of Koh Panyi with no tourists on, most importantly, have a different vision of this very unusual place.

koh panyi shopping 5

The boat ride is fascinating, gliding through the mangrove and between colossal limestone rocks. Circling the village gives you an excellent idea of its size and shape. You will then disembark at the main piers, where a dozen seafood restaurants get ready for their busy lunchtime. Since you will still be there at noon, try it anyway: despite being a tourist attraction, Koh Panyi remains a real fishing village, and they serve a pretty good Tom Yum Goong .

Koh Panyi Village (Koh Panyee)

Koh Panyi (Flag Island) is a Muslim village built on stilts about 200 years ago at the feet of a giant limestone cliff. Only a tiny part of the village is on solid ground (where the mosque is), and the rest just grew from there and slowly continues to grow.

Houses on stilts in Koh Panyee

The central part of Koh Panyi is a concrete floor connecting dozens of tiny souvenir shops, and from there, a narrow maze of uneven planks leads to the population’s houses. Start exploring, and you’ll get easily lost in the network of walkways and tiny shops, all selling tee shirts, batiks and stuff made of shells. I guess some people buy those. Once you start walking away from the centre, space opens up between wooden houses, corrugated iron or a bit of everything, and you can see a bit more of the sea and the sunlight.

koh panyi 5

Koh Panyi is a complete village with a school, police station, a small health centre, and a mosque. Living space is amazingly scarce, but people are used to it. Tourists have been photographing the locals so often; that they barely acknowledge your presence. So unless you show some signs of buying something, they will keep going with their daily lives right in front of you: eating, sleeping in hammocks, cleaning, cooking and chatting. It’s odd to witness their every move directly inside their house.

koh panyi mosque

The school is no different. Kids have classes there, and it became part of their daily lives to be photographed by many not-so-respectful tourists. Just try to imagine yourself in the same situation at your school; it would feel weird, wouldn’t it? Koh Panyi is full of life, colours, sights and smells, offering plenty of photographic opportunities. And it’s still unique, but you’ll have to be talented to come up with a photo no one has taken before!

Where to eat in Koh Panyi?

The village is a popular tourist destination, and several restaurants in Koh Panyi offer fresh seafood and Thai cuisine. One of the most well-known restaurants in Koh Panyi is the Floating Restaurant, which is built on a platform over the water and offers stunning views of the bay. The restaurant serves a variety of seafood dishes, including grilled fish, prawns, and squid, as well as traditional Thai curries and stir-fries.

Another popular restaurant in Koh Panyi is the Panyi Seafood Restaurant, which is located on the main street of the village. This restaurant offers a wide selection of fresh seafood dishes, including crab, lobster, and shrimp, as well as vegetarian options like stir-fried vegetables and tofu.

Other notable restaurants in Koh Panyi include the Panyee Muteara Seafood Restaurant which offers delicious seafood and Thai cuisine. Visitors to Koh Panyi can also sample local street food like grilled squid and satay, which is available from vendors throughout the village.

KOH PANYEE, THE FLOATING MUSLIM VILLAGE

Koh Panyee is a special Muslim village floating on the sea in Phang Nga Bay. It is part of the Ao Phang Nga National Park. The floating island lies in the shadow of a high limestone rock formation in a sheltered bay at sea.

Koh Panyee is about half an hour by boat from the Phang Nga Pier in Phang Nga Bay. The village is also easy to reach from Phuket and Krabi if you book a tour.

The origins of Koh Panyee Muslim Village

The floating Muslim village was created about two hundred years ago by 3 seafaring fishing families from Java in Indonesia. They were looking for a good location with lots of fish. If they would find that place they would let them know by hoisting a flag on top of a mountain top so others could join them. They found the sheltered spot by the high rock and hoisted the flag. Slowly more people joined them, and in the meantime 400 families are living here! Nowadays only the older generation in the village still speaks Bahasa Indonesia, the younger generation mainly speaks Thai.

Limestone rock and floating Muslim village Koh Panyee

By living on the water they cleverly circumvented Thai law. The law states that foreigners are not allowed to own land in Thailand. When later on more and more tourists came to Thailand and therefore also to Koh Panyee, they got ownership. The first thing the inhabitants of Koh Panyee built at that time was a freshwater well and a mosque.

What is there to see on Koh Panyee?

Thanks to the three fishing families who found this place and decided to settle here, a complete village has been created with everything you can expect from a village.

James Bond Island Tour, floating village

There is a school, hospital, cemetery, market, stores, small museum, restaurants and of course a fish farm. Would you like to stay overnight in this special village? That is possible, because nowadays there is even a simple hotel! In the past, the inhabitants mainly lived from fishing, but nowadays tourism has also become a growing source of income.

DID YOU KNOW? 50% of the stalls on nearby James Bond Island are from the women living on Koh Panyee.

Spending the night on Koh Panyee

If you want to experience Koh Panyee without other tourists you can take advantage of the unique opportunity to stay at the James Bond Hotel (Bungalow) . It is a must for anyone interested in ordinary local life. When the tourists are gone, the restaurants and shops close and normal life goes on again.

You can rent a kayak at the hotel for 300 baht with which you can paddle around the village. The rooms of the James Bond Hotel are simple, have cold water and fans. The expensive room has a balcony overlooking the spectacular bay of Phang Nga. The owners are very warm-hearted and can help you organize a private tour to the surrounding attractions.

Muslims and their customs

Pork, drinking alcohol and smoking is prohibited on Koh Panyee. Although the inhabitants of the island have probably seen a lot of bikinis, they will hardly ever say anything about it. Despite that, it is respectful if your clothes are a little more covered on this floating island. This also makes it easier to make contact with the friendly residents of Koh Panyee.

narrow street with souvenir shops on Koh Panyi island

Most of the restaurants and stores are aimed at the tourists who visit this special place. Walk further into the maze of narrow wooden and concrete elevated paths, especially away from the souvenir shops and you’ll see the really chaotic and even messy looking Koh Panyee. Of course the prices on Koh Panyee are higher than in the less touristy areas like mainland Phan Nga.

Koh Panyee in Phang Nga Bay seen with a drone

A large expansion of Koh Panyee is no longer possible, the floating island becomes too big. For future generations this probably means that they will have to look for a place to live on the mainland.

DID YOU KNOW? The fresh water that flows from the tap on Koh Panyee comes all the way from the mainland of Phang Nga via a very long big hose that lies over the seabed.

The floating soccer fields

The most special thing to see on Koh Panyee are, in our opinion, the three floating soccer fields. The first floating soccer field was built after the 1986 World Cup with wood from old houses and everything else that was loose on the island. Not really ideal of course because the surface was anything but even and smooth. In some places the nails even stuck out. The children also had to go into the water every time the ball was shot out.

By playing soccer under these conditions, the children’s soccer techniques were better than they thought. On the mainland they won a number of championships and put themselves and the soccer team Panyee FC and the island on the map.

The children of that time are now adults and give training to the next generation of young soccer players on Koh Panyee. Check out the video below for the complete story!

How to get to Koh Panyee?

Koh Panyee is usually visited as part of the James Bond Island Tour from Phuket, Phang Nga Town or Krabi . If you only want to visit Koh Panyee and/or stay overnight there, you can discuss this with the longtail boat owner at the Tha Dan Pier or the tour agency in Phang Nga Town. From Phang Nga Bay the crossing should not cost more than 200 baht. From Phuket or Krabi it is probably cheaper and easier to join a tour. If you want to stay at Koh Panyee you can ask if you can join another tour the next day to make the journey back.

The Historical Tapestry of Koh Panyi

Approximately two centuries ago, three Indonesian fishing families, led by the intrepid Toh Baboo, embarked on a quest across the seas. Their mission was simple yet daunting: to find a new haven brimming with fish and promise. The discovery of Koh Panyi, marked by the hoisting of a flag atop its towering cliff, signalled the birth of a new community. Today, about 1,600 individuals from 360 families call this island their home, their lives intricately woven into the fabric of this aquatic landscape.

Cultural Mosaic: The Indonesian Legacy

Koh Panyi’s roots are deeply entrenched in Indonesian culture, evident in the older generation’s fluency in Bahasa Indonesia. This linguistic heritage, coupled with the predominantly Muslim faith of the villagers, paints a vivid picture of a community that has skillfully preserved its identity while adapting to the evolving landscape of Thailand.

A walk through the village.

The heart of Koh Panyi is a confluence of narrow alleyways, flanked by a kaleidoscope of souvenir shops. A stroll through these lanes reveals an array of traditional Thai and sea-inspired crafts, with the sun-dappled sea peeking through the gaps between homes. This bustling centre gradually gives way to the quieter, more intimate parts of the village, where the rhythm of daily life unfolds unguardedly before the visitor’s eyes.

Community Pillars: From Schools to Mosques

Despite its size, Koh Panyi is a self-sufficient entity, boasting essential amenities like a school, a health centre, a mosque, and even a police station. The scarcity of space is counterbalanced by a resourcefulness that is as much a part of the island’s identity as its stilted structures.

Koh Panyee (Panyi Island)

Koh Panyee settlement built on stilts of Phang Nga Bay, Thailand

Koh Panyee, the floating community in the Andaman Sea

K oh panyee or well-known “the village in the sea” the world tourist destination in Thailand which have expanded its reputation toward the traveler worldwide for ages. The wonderful island nestled in the middle of Pang Nga Bay of Pang-Nga province in the south of Thailand. Unfortunately, most tourists visit the island just for a day trip which takes only 2 hours. But to know more about Koh Panyee, it would be nice to extend your trip to stay the night at the homestay to tie in your experience with the rustic way of life of the locals that blended the entity to nature and inherited the traditional Muslim that is the primary belief of the people here.

Knowing Koh Panyee

Koh Panyee. Amazing picture by drone

Panyee Island or Koh Panyee located in Koh Panyee sub-district, Muaeng Phang-Nga district, a small island that is not less in its property as the strategic community in the middle of the Andaman Sea. Koh Panyee is about 1,600 sqm of land which most of the space is in the sea of Ao Phang Nga and the mangrove forest of Ao Phang Nga National Park . On the island has all necessary facility for living, i.e., school, health care center, mosque, and shops.

The word “Panyee” in Indonesian means “flag.” In the past, there’re three Java or Indonesian families, and one of them is “To Nabu” a leader of the evacuation of those people from Java, the agreement was anyone who finds the abundant land should flag as the symbol, and that became the name of Panyee Island finally.

Koh Panyee consists of 4 villages which are;

Fisherman village, Phang Nga, Ao Phang Nga National Park, Thailand

  • The first village: Ban Tha Dan located at the area of the shallow water in Pang Nga Bay.
  • The second village: Koh Panyee located at the area of the shallow water of Pang Nga Bay, as well.
  • The third community: Koh Mai Phai (Bamboo Island) located on the island and the mangrove forest of Pang Nga Bay.
  • The forth village: Koh Mak Noi located on the island of Pang Nga Bay.

As on limited space of the land of Koh Panyee resulted in the construction of the residences and school is in the water. Consequently, when the tide is high, it looks similar to the Panyee community is floating in the middle of the sea. Regarding those of structures were built to save from the change of tide that is the buildings constructed over the cleats installed into the ooze since the establishment.

Regarding the citizen of Koh Panyee, Muslim is the majority of the island, whereas other religions as Buddhism and Christ are the minor belief of the people, respectively. Most of the residents live the lives by traditional fishing; obviously, you will see many hinged floating baskets all around the area of the island. Apart from that, they run shops like souvenir and restaurant to serve the visitors who visit the island.

The floating football field of Koh Panyee

However, the real highlight of Koh Panyee that anyone who takes the trip to this remarkable island should not miss is “the floating football field” that also is one and only in Thailand. Indeed, it becomes the tourist magnet of Koh Panyee that attracts lots of travelers from around the world to come to see it.

The notable football field derived from the strong will of the children on the island who love to play football resulted in the establishment of “Panyee Football Club” or better known “Panyee FC” which has succeeded with the champion trophy from many tournaments. Presently, there are two football fields on the island, which are the first field that we can see the floor is made from wood and the new one which created by buoyancy.

🌴 Discover the Magic of Phuket! 🌴

The village of koh panyi.

  • 22 January 2021 10:55

Also known as Ko Panyi, this village, built entirely on stilts in Phang Nga Bay near the famous James Bond Island is a village worth visiting. This is an unusual but a very exciting place to explore. You will find lots of seafood restaurants welcoming visitors as they get there. In order to enjoy and be served well, then better get there early.

More about the village of Koh Panyee

Koh Panyee Village is a small island community which is approximately 20 minutes from Surakul pier in Phang Nga province by a longtail boat. It’s not very populated… just about 1600 people permanently living on the island. Toh Baboo is the main ancestor. So, these people living there are direct or indirect descendants plus family and friends who initially settled on Koh Panyee Thailand about 200 years ago. The Toh Baboo family and two others left their home in Indonesia looking for a fresh start.

As the story goes, they vowed to each other that the person who found a spot with lots of fish where all of them could live would signal the others with a flag raised as high as possible on a mountain. Find it Toh Baboo did. So became the name Koh Panyee, also known as Ko Panyi, meaning ‘Island of the Flag’ in Thai.

The good thing about Ko Panyi is that you can have it almost for yourself. All you need to do is just rent a car to the Surakul pier in Phang Nga, then hop on to a longtail boat for about 20 minutes. Not as cheap as you might expect though. About 1,500 baht should get you there. But trust me, the fun you will have and the beautiful photos you will take at Koh Panyee Thailand will be worth the while. Just the boat ride itself is amazing. Manoeuvring between mangrove and colossal limestone rocks is fascinating. Then you will get dozen seafood restaurants for some good lunchtime devouring.

Much as Koh Panyee Village is a tourist attraction it still maintains its reputation as a fishing village. They usually have some very good Tom Yum Goong. It is also a Muslim village that was constructed on stilts like 200 years ago beneath a giant limestone cliff. Only a small section of the village where the mosque is sits on solid ground. The other places just grew from there and it slowly keeps expanding. This village is mostly made up of large and almost vertical limestone cliffs with the area where villagers live are built on stilts on top of the shallow sea. This village is uniquely built and its informal engineering makes this place very fascinating.

Koh Panyee Village has a school, a mosque, a health centre, a few big restaurants overlooking the Andaman Sea as well as lots of souvenir shops. For accommodation and overnight stays there are bungalows. The most fascinating feature about this unique place is the floating football pitch which was built by kids from old scraps of wood and fishing rafts. This floating pitch is the reason behind Panyee FC becoming on of the most successful youth soccer teams in Southern Thailand.

The community

When you get to the village, you will be amazed at the hospitality and reception of the community. You will be received by young guides who are very eager to show visitors around. One thing that the community prides itself in is having electricity, internet and water that doesn’t come from the mainland.

Seeing as it’s such an isolated community, the locals really take care of their environment. They have lots of environmental projects such as a recycling program where they collect bottles and cans and once they are sold, the proceeds go to the school. Killing two birds with one stone – making money as well as keeping the Koh Panyee Thailand village clean. There is also a program where the teachers assist and teach the students to grow vegetables using hydroponics.

Much as this is a tourist attraction, the kids are used to being photographed by tourists as they usually go about their daily lives.  Classes go on as scheduled. The situation feels pretty weird.

Koh Panyi is a very vibrant place that is very colourful and with various smells. The place has lots of spots to take photographs.

Important to note

This village is a Muslim community so woman hear are expected to be dressed decently – no shorts skirts or shorts are allowed. However, T-shirts and jeans are allowed. What isn’t allowed is wearing clothes that expose lots of skin as the villagers won’t take it well.

There are lots of tours to Panyee. Some even include pick-up from the hotel to the village. If you’ve taken part on one of our Phang Nga Bay tours , then an extra day in the region will not hurt. This is a trip worth considering if you are on a tour of Thailand.

Round the World in 30 Days

5 Dreamy Day Trips from Krabi that Prove Thailand is Drop Dead Gorgeous

Krabi Thailand Things to do

From the stunning limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay to the glittering beaches of the Phi Phi Islands, here’s why Krabi is the perfect home base to discover the wonders of Thailand.

Ahh, Thailand.

It’s one of my favorite countries in the world to visit. In fact, I’ve included Thailand on the itinerary for 8 out of 10 of my Round-the-World trips . I just can’t get enough.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to book through these links, I receive a small commission, which I will undoubtedly blow on more flights (it’s a vicious cycle).  All of this internet voodoo takes place at no additional cost to you.

It’s so much more than just the fascinating culture and friendly smiles of welcoming locals. From gilded temples to sparkling white-sand beaches, Thailand is home to a stunning landscape that beckons travelers (like me) back again and again.

And let’s be honest, Thai food is worth the trip alone. From street food to seafood, it’s a culinary adventure.

But while the bustling city of Bangkok is a must when visiting Thailand, the incredible Thai islands are the real show-stopper.

Read More: Everything’s Better in Bangkok

I’m talking about some of the world’s dreamiest tropical islands. More than 1,400 islands, in fact. Thailand’s beautifully diverse islands wow visitors with turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and abundant marine life.

And many of those Instagram-worthy islands can be explored within a short speedboat ride of popular resort destinations like Phuket and Krabi.

Which is better Krabi or Phuket?

Yes, most of the lovely islands I list below can also be visited by day trip from Phuket. However, I much prefer Krabi as a home base for island-hopping in Thailand.

And here’s why.

A small province in the south of Thailand, Krabi is bordered by the calm, azure Andaman Sea on one side and Malaysia on the other. It’s a more tranquil option than the popular tourist hub of Phuket, and that’s why Krabi is the perfect place to unwind and relax on an empty beach.

Tip: If you don’t like crowds, never, ever go to Phuket over Chinese New Year.

Read More: Packed in Phuket: A Lesson in What Not to Do for Chinese New Year

Sure, Phuket is mountainous and beautiful. But it’s also jam-packed with high-end resorts. And that equals traffic.

So when given the choice between the mega-resorts and traffic of Phuket versus laid-back Krabi, I choose Krabi.

Every. Single. Time.

The province of Krabi boasts some of Thailand’s most spectacular beaches. Resorts here are more spread out, beaches are less crowded and sunsets are divine.

So if you’re trying to decide between Phuket and Krabi, choose Krabi. You won’t regret it.

Krabi Thailand

How to Get from Bangkok to Krabi

While there are a few international flights directly to Krabi (from Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, and China), most international flights arrive in Thailand via Bangkok.

From there, it’s a quick, easy, and affordable flight to Krabi’s (KBV) airport with round-trip flights averaging less than $100 US.

Flights to Krabi are available from both of Bangkok’s airports, Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK – where international flights arrive) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK – home to most domestic flights).

Flights from Don Mueang tend to be a little cheaper. However, if you’re arriving on an international flight into BKK and heading straight to Krabi, it’s not worth the considerable hassle to change airports.

Of course, if you’re spending a few days in Bangkok before heading on to the islands, flights from Don Mueang are a great option.

Do I need a rental car in Krabi?

It’s not necessary to have a rental car in Krabi. Transportation options are readily available at the airport and most day trips include pickup at your resort.

That said, I always prefer to rent a car when visiting Krabi. I enjoy the freedom of having my own wheels to explore on my own schedule.

And since Krabi covers a much larger area than Phuket, having a car can be an advantage to get from your resort to Krabi Town or to the pier to hire a long-tail boat for the day.

I would NOT, however, recommend getting a car in Phuket. Distances in Phuket are shorter, traffic is a real issue, and taxis and tuk-tuks are an affordable way to get around.

By comparison, driving the country roads of Krabi province is very straightforward as long as you’re comfortable driving on the left. If you do decide to rent a car, I like DiscoverCars.com for finding the best deals with no surprises at the counter.

My favorite rental car booking site to use all over the world. No hidden costs, free cancellation, and 24/7 customer support.

What’s the best time to visit Krabi?

For both Phuket and Krabi, the best time to visit is mid-November through April which is considered high season. You’ll find the holiday months of December and January especially popular, as well as the weeks surrounding Chinese New Year.

During the high season months, you’ll enjoy sunny skies and calmer seas for boat trips making this an ideal time to visit.

However, you can visit either destination year-round. But if you do visit in the summer rainy season, expect the occasional torrential downpour and a 50/50 chance of canceled boat trips.

All of my trips to Thailand have been in the high season months. Except for one visit to Krabi in July. Yes, we got a lot of rain on that trip, but we also got fewer crowds and terrific hotel deals. So there are a few perks to visiting in the low season.

How many days in Krabi is enough?

Honestly, you could spend a month in Krabi and still keep finding new islands and beaches to explore. Or you could spend just a week and squeeze in all the terrific island day trips I’ve listed below.

I’d say a week is the minimum amount of time to properly explore the region and some of the best nearby islands. But if you have 10 days or two weeks, even better.

Where to stay in Krabi

Krabi has everything from 5-star luxury resorts and charming boutique properties to budget hotels and apartment rentals. I’m a big fan of some of Krabi’s resort options since resorts of this caliber outside of Southeast Asia would be twice the price.

In other words, it’s easy to find luxury for less in Thailand.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Banyan Tree Krabi – For a real splurge, this chic beachfront resort is a true oasis. Situated on beautiful Tab Kaek Beach, each room is a spacious suite with stylish decor. The best part? Every suite comes complete with a private pool.

If you’ve always dreamed of a suite with your own private pool, this is one of the most affordable places to find it. In fact, a room with a private pool will run you twice as much per night at the Rayavadee (below).

Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort – I first stayed at this affordable, luxury resort back when it was the Sheraton Krabi and it’s always been one of my favorite places to stay when visiting Krabi.

Located on peaceful Klong Muang Beach, this resort has everything you need for a relaxing Krabi holiday…at half the price of the other two options on this list.

Bonus: There are several restaurants within walking distance so you can avoid the typical overpriced resort restaurants.

Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort

Rayavadee Krabi – When it comes to natural, scenic locations, the Rayavadee resort is hard to beat. Located on Railay Beach, Rayavadee is surrounded by soaring limestone cliffs and swaying palms. All rooms are private villas (called “Pavilions”) that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

What are the best islands to visit from Krabi?

So let’s get to the good stuff…island hopping!

If you’re visiting Krabi, here are five great island day trips to add to your must-do list:

1. Hong Island

Set against the spectacular backdrop of Phang Nga Bay, the four small islands that make up the Koh Hong group are widely considered to be some of the area’s most beautiful.

A part of the National Marine Park, the largest of the four islands is the superbly scenic Hong Island. This uninhabited island features soaring limestone cliffs and a vast interior lagoon (the “ chamber ” from whence its Thai name, “ Hong ” originates).

Hong Island Krabi Thailand

The deep emerald green of the lagoon is accessed through a dramatic cliff passage and is best explored by kayak or longtail boat. And don’t forget to bring a few slices of bread to feed the schools of tropical fish that will eagerly eat right out of your hand just a few steps from shore.

Krabi to Hong Island by Speedboat Tour

There are plenty of group day trips that visit the Hong Islands. The benefit of a group tour is that they allow you to also visit the small beautiful islands of Pakbia, Rai, Lahding, and Daeng in one easy trip.

The downside, of course, is that you’ll be visiting the islands with lots of other day-trippers.

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

Hong Island One-Day Tour by Speed Boat

A speed boat group tour is the most affordable way to see Hong Island from Krabi. This 6-hour trip allows you to take in more of the surrounding islands and also includes lunch, drinks, and snacks. The only downside is you’ll be visiting with a group.

Krabi to Hong Island on Your Own

The closest beach to reach Hong Island is Klong Muang, where I recently stayed at the Dusit Thani Krabi. A longtail boat from this quiet beach will have you stepping off the dock onto Hong Island in just over 30 minutes.

Krabi to Hong Island by Private Longtail Boat

If you want to book your Hong Island trip in advance instead of hiring a longtail boat when you arrive, this private tour is a great choice. They also provide transportation from your hotel:

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

Hong Island Tour by Private Longtail Boat

A private longtail boat is the only way to beat the crowds at Hong Island and this trip is my favorite option. Ignore the start times listed, they’ll customize the trip to whenever you want to go. My advice? Get an early start and head out by 7:30am.

Fair warning, go early if you want to capture the image above. We arrived a little after 8:00am and tour boats began to show up in force by 10:00am and continued throughout the day. On your own, you can easily visit Hong Island as a half-day trip (in the morning) and plan something else for the afternoon.

Bottom Line:  If you’re looking for a quick and easy trip to a beautiful offshore island, Hong Island is a terrific choice.

2. Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi islands are an archipelago of six islands in Thailand. The two largest and most well-known islands are Ko Phi Phi Don and its sister island, Ko Phi Phi Leh.

The islands catapulted to fame in 2000 when Phi Phi Leh’s stunning Maya Bay was featured in the film “ The Beach ” with Leonardo DiCaprio. Due to large waves that make the entrance to the bay dangerous in the low season, it’s only possible to visit Maya Bay from November to April.

However, in 2018 severe over-tourism led Thai officials to temporarily close Maya Bay to visitors. While it was initially announced to be a 6-month closure, the bay remained closed to visitors for several years.

Thankfully, as of October 1, 2023, Maya Bay is once again open to visitors. So get there while you can!

Tip: Before you book a Phi Phi Islands tour, check with the tour operator to be sure it includes a stop at Maya Bay. While the bay has re-opened, not all tour operators have added this stop back to the itinerary.

Koh Phi Phi Thailand

Can you spend the night on Phi Phi Don?

Indeed you can! And there are some gorgeous resorts on the island. Here are a few great resort options on Phi Phi Don:

Zeavola Resort  – Generally speaking, hotels are pretty affordable on Phi Phi Don. But if you’re looking for a bit of a splurge, this secluded beachfront resort is my top choice on the island.

Located on the northern tip of Phi Phi Don, this 10-acre retreat with a private, pristine beach is a true oasis on an island better known for backpackers and guesthouses.

Phi Phi Holiday Resort  – Just a bit further south from Zeavola on the tranquil northern peninsula, this resort benefits from the same scenic location at a more affordable price. While the rooms are slightly dated (compared to Zeavola), they are sparkling clean and well-equipped.

And the stretch of beachfront at this resort is so gorgeous you’ll have trouble tearing yourself away to explore the rest of the island.

HIP Seaview Resort @ Phi Phi  – Situated on a hilltop with panoramic sea views (hence the name), this boutique resort is a steal with most rates below $100 US/night. Rooms are comfy bungalow-style, most offering stunning views thanks to the elevated location.

The flip side of that? To reach the beach, you’ll need to navigate a considerable stairway.

Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands by Tour

If you don’t have enough time to spend the night on beautiful Phi Phi Don, you can still visit the island from Krabi by day trip. Due to the travel time out to the island and back, most tours last at least 7 hours.

There are dozens of tour options to choose from but this Phi Phi Early Bird – Beat The Crowds & Krabi 4 Islands From Krabi is my favorite. Why? Because it pays to get there early, this is a very popular day trip destination and most boats come from Phuket for this one.

Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands on Your Own

To go it on your own, you have two options – ferry or speed boat. The ferry is the most popular (and affordable) option and takes about 90 minutes. During high season, it’s advisable to book your tickets in advance. Ferries depart from Krabi’s Klong Jilad Pier.

All ferries arrive on Phi Phi Don’s Ton Sai Pier.

Speed boats to Phi Phi take about an hour and are available from Ao Nang Pier, Railay Beach Pier, and the Krabi River Marina.

Because timetables and prices change frequently, it’s best to get the most current information from your hotel before planning your day trip.

3. The 4 Islands Tour

One of the most popular day trips from Krabi, the 4 Islands Tour includes Koh Poda, Ko Kai (Chicken Island), Tup Island, and Phranang Cave Beach.

Chicken Island Krabi Thailand

This day trip includes 4 small islands with breathtaking beaches and terrific snorkeling. Plan on a full day for this one, too. The average trip is a minimum of 6 hours and typically includes lunch.

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

4 Island Sunset Snorkeling Cruise + bioluminescent Night Snorkel

This is my favorite of the “4-islands” trips because it actually includes 5 islands! Plus sunset and a very awesome night snorkel. You’ll spend the day exploring on a classic junk boat instead of a speed boat and a buffet dinner is also included.

Bottom Line:  If you’re looking to squeeze in several unique islands in a single day, the 4-Islands tour is your best bet.

4. Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island & Koh Panyee)

Yes, James Bond island is a bit of a tourist trap. But the boat trip to get there is one of the world’s most scenic. So, to me, it’s still well worth the trip.

Bonus:   Most tours combine the trip to James Bond island with a fascinating stop at Koh Panyee .

James Bond Island

Made famous in the movie, “ The Man with the Golden Gun, ” James Bond island is one of Thailand’s most popular photo-ops. Though the movie places the location in China, Thailand is the island’s true home.

James Bond Island Phang Nga Bay Thailand

It’s an extremely frequent stop with the jam-packed tourist boats so the tiny island is pretty much always crawling with people. My advice? Get your photo op and savor the outstanding boat ride through Phang Nga Bay.

When three families set sail from Indonesia some 200 years ago in search of a new place to live, the vertical limestone cliffs of this tiny island hardly seemed a logical choice. But the first of these families were lured by the abundance of fish and raised a flag atop the cliff to signal the others – giving the island its name, Koh Panyee or the Island of the Flag.

Today, more than 1,400 people from 315 families call Koh Panyee home.

Krabi Thailand Day Trips

Over the years they have expanded their village to include hundreds of huts, restaurants, and houses built on stilts over the shallow sea, as well as a school, a mosque, and a health center.

While fishing was once the sole industry for these villagers, tourism now dominates the local economy. Restaurants overlooking the sea here are the typical stop for lunch when spending the day touring Phang Nga Bay.

Krabi to Phang Nga Bay by Tour

Options abound from the Krabi area for a leisurely day trip around beautiful Phang Nga Bay. This is one of my favorites:

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

Island Hopping to James Bond Islands from Krabi with Speedboat

While this IS a speedboat tour, they limit the group size to a max of 17 people so it’s more of a “small group” tour than the larger speedboats. Plus the guide does a great job of staggering island visits to avoid most of the crowds. This full-day trip also includes lunch.

Krabi to Phang Nga Bay on Your Own

If you have a car and you’re up for an adventure, make the 90-minute drive to Phang Nga’s Surakul Pier.

There, you’ll find plenty of longtail boats available for hire for a tour of the bay. You can join another small group or hire your own longtail boat for the day as I did a few years ago on  Round the World #5 . It was a relaxing and affordable way to explore the bay and its top sights.

5. Koh Lanta

Originally settled by a nomadic clan of sea gypsies more than 500 years ago, today Koh Lanta still remains 95% Muslim lending it a more conservative culture than other parts of Thailand.

Stretching nearly 20 miles and boasting 11 white sand beaches, Lanta Yai is the main tourist destination in the archipelago. It’s also where most hotels and tourist facilities are located.

Koh Lanta Thailand

Koh Lanta is one of my favorite Thai islands. It’s less touristy than many others and is known for long stretches of empty beaches. So, in my opinion, it’s worth spending several days. But the island can be visited on a day trip from Krabi.

Tip:   If you do decide to spend a few days and you’re looking for a great hotel right on the beach, check out the   Lanta Castaway Resort .

Krabi to Koh Lanta by Tour

Most tours to “Koh Lanta” actually visit several of the small surrounding islands like Koh Rok and Koh Haa. Many also visit the stunning Emerald Cave on Koh Mook. Plan on a full day and several idyllic islands to explore.

Krabi to Koh Lanta on Your Own

Koh Lanta is easily accessible by speedboat or ferry. The ferry takes a little over 2 hours and can be crowded and uncomfortable during the high season.

Alternatively, from Krabi’s private speedboat dock, the journey takes just 15 minutes. Of course, that convenience costs more, but if you’re visiting just for the day, the time savings are definitely worth it.

Wrapping it up!

And there you have it, the 5 best island-hopping day trips you can’t miss when visiting the Province of Krabi.

So whether you’re looking for sunbathing, snorkeling or just a day on the water exploring some of Thailand’s best islands, Krabi is the perfect launching point.

15 incredibly beautiful football pitches around the world

Forget the vast amphitheatres of Champions League giants. There are stop-you-in-your-tracks footie grounds in some of the most unsuspecting locations

It’s the most popular sport in the world, watched by billions of people and played everywhere from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. So it’s no surprise that there are more than a few breathtaking football stadiums and pitches out there.

And we’re not just talking about the vast, architecturally impressive amphitheatres of national teams and Champions League giants. There are stop-you-in-your-tracks footie grounds in some of the most unsuspecting locations across the globe.

From waterborne stadiums in floating villages to concrete inner-city playing fields – via pitches hidden in vast forests – these are some of the most jaw-dropping places on the planet to have a kickabout. They don’t call it ‘the beautiful game’ for nothing.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
