No ghosts initially appear; instead, Luigi must aim his Poltergust 3000 at each of the mounted deer heads on the north wall, which makes them move up and down and causes a Blue Blaze to appear. After its defeat (using an Ice Element), two more Blue Blazes appear, accompanied by two Garbage Can Ghosts . Once Luigi captures them all, he is rewarded with a Key to the Balcony .

The Safari Room has three animal pelts on the floor (in the beta version of Luigi's Mansion , there are only two pelts, which are on the tables). It also contains two shelves of boxes under the deer heads, as well as an easy chair on the east wall. Besides the easy chair is a chest that always contains a 50- HP restoring Heart for Luigi. There is a piece of cheese that contains a Gold Mouse wedged between the easy chair and the boxes. Using the Game Boy Horror , the player can see a mirror on the south wall that can be used to teleport back to the Foyer .

Ghosts in the Safari Room of the PAL Hidden Mansion [ ]

The ghosts in this room will attack in waves. Luigi needs to initiate this series of waves by moving the deer heads. Upon doing this, two Blue Blazes will spawn. After Luigi captures these, two more will appear along with two Purple Bombers . After dispatching these, the last wave will consist of three more Blue Blazes along with the help of two Purple Punchers . As Luigi captures these ghosts, an extra Blue Blaze and Purple Puncher will appear. When Luigi sucks all these in, the room will light up and Luigi will earn the key to the Balcony.

This can get pretty hectic, so Luigi may need to lure multiple ghosts towards him, blast them with the ice element, and then quickly stun them with the flashlight before sucking them up. Luigi will be able to suck up multiple ghosts at once, but the player should watch out for the pound attack and punches of any ghosts that escaped him.

Nintendo Power hinting a Portrait ghost for the Safari Room

  • The ghost that was thought to be going into this room was speculated to be a hunter who wanted to turn Luigi into a hunting trophy.
  • This was later confirmed to be false, as the Nintendo Power issue that stated this was released one month after the game was released in Japan. It was confirmed to be an inside-like joke.

Get in the ghost-gustin’ spirit with a few basics for Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

You know, the Evershade Valley was quite a lovely (though, rather creepy-looking) place. Well, at least until the magical Dark Moon suddenly shattered, turning the once-friendly ghosts hostile. Now, a very reluctant Luigi must reunite with Professor E. Gadd to restore the Dark Moon, clear the eerie fog, and return the ghosts to their normal, helpful spirits.

Well…that sounds like quite a haunting task. But no need to fear! We’ve scared up a few tips to help you get ready to boo-gie!

In times like these, you’ll be glad to have E. Gadd on your side! The professor is ready to help the best ghost wrangler he knows—well, the ONLY ghost wrangler he knows—with some frightfully fun equipment.

Poltergust 5000 : This upgradable ghost gobbling tool has both suction and air-blasting functions that are useful for paranormal combat. You can use it to solve puzzles, find treasures, and move things around.

Strobulb : A charge-up light attachment for the Poltergust 5000 that’s perfect for stunning ghosts.

Dark-Light Device : Shed some light on mysterious hidden objects and make them appear.

Dual Scream : A device with two screens that works as a handy map and communication device. Technology!

Now that you’re all geared up, it’s time to get to work! But finding the Dark Moon shards won’t be a simple walk in the valley…

A job for Luigi…?

To take on rowdy ghosts, menacing mansions, and some rather prickly plants, you’ll want to know the ins and outs of the Evershade Valley.

Pick your mission

Since Professor E. Gadd has set up a base of operations in his impenetrable Bunker, you won’t have to worry about fighting ghosts while inside (phew!).

Select the mission that you’d like to go on and—with a little help from E. Gadd—use the Pixelator to transport from the Bunker to your destination. Being broken down into a bunch of pixels to move from one place to another may sound scary, but Luigi will (probably) be fine. Then, once you’ve completed all the objectives, pixelate back to the Bunker—easy piece-y!

What’s in those mansions?

E. Gadd will be able to direct you towards the Dark Moon shards in each of the mansions. The haunted halls of each location have a distinct vibe, along with their own tricky puzzles to solve. You’ll have to use your noodle to find your way through. While you’re at it, you could even look for—oh, we don’t know… treasure ?! More on that later.

Pro tip: Check for things that look out of place. Do you see the corner of a rug lifted? Use the ol’ Poltergust 5000 and see what happens!

Ok, you’ve got your tools and your mission, it’s time to get to the ghosts (GULP!!).

Grappling with ghosts

Grappling with ghosts may sound hard, but the Poltergust 5000 is all warmed up and ready to go!

As a ghost starts to approach you, you’ll be able to stun them with a flash of light from the Strobulb attachment. Did you see that surprised look on their face? Now it’s time to start vacuuming the stunned ghost up!

Of course, these rabble-rousing spirits won’t go down without a fight, so when they start pulling away from you, use the controls to pull in the opposite direction. You’ll see a number above their head that, once it gets down to zero, will bag the ghost and maybe a little treasure!

(Wait, do ghosts have pockets? Where were they keeping all that loot? Anyways!)

Some ghosts are tougher than others, so it may take more than one Strobulb flash and game of tug-of-war to capture them. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!

Pro tip: Sometimes Luigi will be able to look through windows, keyholes, and cracks to see into the next room. You can use this to see if ghosts are hanging out and come up with a plan of attack.

Speaking of treasure…

You can find treasure around the mansions, by solving puzzles, and by capturing ghosts. But what does it look like? And how will you be able to use it? Both are great questions and the mark of a great ghost wrangler!

Treasure can be coins, bills, and even bars of gold. You may even find gems along the way. We’re not exactly sure what they do, but we bet it’s something neat! Pick up these treasures by walking over them or drawing them in with the Poltergust 5000.

Once you’ve finished a mission and returned to E. Gadd’s Bunker, you’ll be able to unload the Poltergust 5000 to see what kind of goodies you’ve gathered up. Treasure earned will go towards unlocking powerful upgrades for the Poltergust 5000 that can increase damage, prevent the Dark-Light Device from overheating as quickly, and more.

Alright, ghost wranglers! We hope these tidbits will have you feeling ready for when the Luigi’s Mansion™ 2 HD game releases on June 27 . If you’d like to pre-order the game, please click on the link below!

Luigi's Mansion was developed with stereoscopic 3D compatibility. The Nintendo GameCube was built with 3D components which could be activated by an unreleased add-on. [2] This add-on was never released as its price would have been far greater than the console. Another unreleased add-on would have allowed the Game Boy Advance to be used as an external controller in conjunction with the game. [3] The game's remake and sequel both support stereoscopic 3D, as they were released for the Nintendo 3DS .

Early iterations [ edit ]

Concepts for Luigi's Mansion , such as character designs, were being planned during the Nintendo 64 's lifetime. [1]

The game was first revealed at Nintendo Space World in 2000 as a tech demo , [4] [5] designed to show off the graphical capabilities of the Nintendo GameCube. [6] [7]

Nintendo then decided to make Luigi's Mansion into a full-fledged game, and was later showcased at E3 in 2001, with notable changes to the design of the disc. [8] [3]

Early builds [ edit ]

Old issues of Nintendo Power (pictured below) contain details of early elements in screenshots and descriptions.

Poltergust [ edit ]

In earlier builds, the Poltergust 3000 originally featured a pressure meter ranging from one to ten, and was slightly bigger. [8] If the pressure meter reached ten, the vacuum would backfire and burst out flames, causing Luigi to fall over and lose health, his HP eventually raises back up slightly after a while. [8] Earlier versions of the game allowed Luigi to spray water infinitely. [3] The Poltergust 3000 also had different nozzles depending on what element was being used. [9] Later versions of the game had the pressure meter be updated to a "Ghost Counter", which, truthful to its name, counted ordinary ghosts, portrait ghosts and boss ghosts; similar to the previous iterations, the counter would stop to ten.

GUI changes [ edit ]

Luigi's total remaining health was shown as a fraction. [3] Coins also had their own meter. [3] Early builds reveal that Boos captured would be displayed by a whole number.

luigi's mansion safari room ghost

Originally, the Game Boy Horror had an LCD border, which would function as a red flashing radar to show Luigi the locations of both ghosts and Boos within a room, and had a clock function. [3] One clip shows that once the clock reached 1:30 on the E3 Nintendo Booth version, E. Gadd would contact Luigi and send him back to the title screen. [10] Early gameplay images from newer builds reveal that instead of showing Luigi his current gold total, the Game Boy Horror was subsequently altered to always display a first-person view camera, giving the player two perspectives in a room at once.

Early ghosts [ edit ]

luigi's mansion safari room ghost

  • The first ghosts seen in Luigi's Mansion were all blue and many had large noses.
  • Variations of a ghost similar in appearance to the final game's Gold Ghost existed in an earlier build. They would attack by scaring Luigi from behind suddenly while releasing a "BAHHHHHH" particle, causing Luigi to cry out in terror, crawl backwards uncontrollably, and lose a hefty amount of 50 health points while the amount of his maximum health also gets capped to its half; the heart beating very quickly on the counter. After a while, Luigi gets up and his health limit is raised back to normal. [3]
  • In earlier versions of the Kitchen , a ghost resembling a chef would have appeared while holding a tomato. [11]
  • A spherical ghost was seen briefly in the game's E3 2001 trailer, and was originally supposed to harmlessly bounce around Chauncey's room.

Other [ edit ]

  • The game had a different main menu, giving the options to "Skip Intro" or play "From The Beginning", though this menu was developed uniquely for the playable demo. E. Gadd also had different dialogue. [3]
  • The cutscene showing Luigi walking to and opening the door to the mansion was slightly different. The door was also designed differently. [3]
  • Ghosts had a different sound effect when appearing upon from behind the player, instead of the loud roar from behind in the final. Ghosts also did not startle Luigi upon appearing.
  • The Gallery had a different design than the final game.
  • Originally there was no way to turn off the flashlight.

Unused data [ edit ]

Unused models [ edit ].

A Phonograph, left unused in the files of the Projection room.

There are three renders of Luigi left in the game's data for the ending, each with a varying degree of happiness. The renders are a depressed Luigi holding a flower (worst), a pleased Luigi with a peace sign (good), and another pleased Luigi with two peace signs (best). [12] An unused model for Mario , labeled "bmario", is stretched to Luigi's proportions and given the backstraps for his Poltergust 3000, possibly suggesting that multiplayer was originally planned. [9]

Textures for cyan and blue-colored Ghost Guys along with two unused, non-functioning actors for them are also present in the game's data. [12]

The unused Poltergust 3000 along with the larger equipment still exists as well, along with two unused nozzles used for dust and water labeled "wpair" and "wpwater" respectively.

  • A blue ghost, Obake01 (thought to be an early Gold Ghost)
  • A green ghost, Obake02 (thought to be an early Purple Puncher)
  • Mario (missing when Mario talks to Luigi at the Bottom of the Well , while trapped in the Secret Altar , even in the early Nintendo 3DS remake) [13] [14]
  • Underground lab
  • Ghost Portrificationizer Room

Multiplayer [ edit ]

During an Iwata Asks interview, the developers mentioned a scrapped multiplayer mode where Luigi would meet another Luigi. [15]

On June 26, 2019, a modder by the name of KIRBYMIMI was looking through the code for Luigi's Mansion specifically for routines on memory referring to Luigi . One address/value referred to the quantity of Luigis that are spawned in game, and adjusting it would cause a second Luigi to appear, though without a Poltergust. This Luigi was also formerly inputless, but it became possible for a second player to control this other Luigi by adding custom code which makes him use the second controller. This Luigi shares the same animations as the original Luigi, but has difficulty opening doors and cannot pick up objects. The second Luigi also ignores any commands which take away player input, which means he can walk during most cutscenes; he can also suck up ghosts if the Poltergust was manually added. If the two Luigis move away from each other in a certain distance, the screen splits horizontally and the game does this automatically, meaning the multiplayer mechanic existed within the game's code. Additionally, the second Luigi is able to vacuum the same ghost the first Luigi is vacuuming if timed correctly. This multiplayer experience came to fruition with the inclusion of Gooigi , who shares some of the same coding and limitations of this second Luigi, in the game's Nintendo 3DS remake . [16]
