Malachite, with its beautiful, rich green color, leaves no doubt of its importance as a jewel. Its opaque strength and power demand respect, mesmerizing the viewer. Yet the movement, flow, and energy in its lines, circles, and designs soothe and welcome. It is spiritually inviting.

Malachite personifies the deep healing green of nature and represents the innate beauty of flowers, trees, roots, and plants. It manifests a deep Devic green which rules the material plane. It is a Stone of Transformation, assisting one in changing situations and providing for spiritual growth. It heals on physical and emotional levels, drawing out impurities and stimulating the Life Force throughout the aura and body.

The name Malachite may come from the Greek word malakee or malache , signifying the resemblance of Mallow leaves, or from the Greek word malakos , meaning soft. Being a carbonate of copper, Malachite is sometimes intergrown with Azurite, forming Malachite-Azurite, or with Chrysocolla, forming Malachite-Chrysocolla.

Well known to ancient Egyptians, Malachite mines were in use between the Suez and Sinai as early as 4000 BC. It was also popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans, for jewelry, ornaments, and in powdered form, for eye shadow. In the Middle Ages, Malachite was believed to protect against the "Evil Eye" and to cure various stomach ailments. Russian czars used Malachite for ornaments and paneling for their castles and intricate inlay work.

Inherent in Malachite are lighter green eye-shaped forms or bands on its surface. These “eye stones,” believed to enhance great visionary powers, were used to ward off negative happenings. They were stones of security and protection for children, and their most remarkable association today is the ability to warn of impending danger by breaking into pieces

Malachite is a protection stone, absorbing negative energies and pollutants from the atmosphere and from the body. It guards against radiation of all kinds, clears electromagnetic pollution, and heals earth energies. Keep near microwaves in the kitchen and televisions in living areas.

Throughout history, Malachite has been considered to be a talisman for children. If a piece of the stone were attached to an infant’s cradle, all evil spirits were held aloof and the child slept soundly and peacefully.

In some parts of Germany, Malachite shared with Turquoise the repute of protecting the wearer from danger in falling, and also gave warning of approaching disaster by breaking into pieces.

At one time, the appropriate design to be engraved upon a Malachite was the image of the sun. Such a gem would become a powerful talisman and protected the wearer from enchantments, evil spirits, and the attacks of venomous creatures.

Because of Malachite's peculiar markings, some of which suggest the form of an eye, it was worn in parts of Italy as an amulet to protect the wearer from the spell of the Evil Eye. Such stones were called "peacock stones," from their resemblance in color and markings to the peacock’s tail. The form of these Malachite amulets is usually triangular and mounted in silver.

Malachite is a Guardian Builder Crystal. The Guardian talismans do not reveal their inner strength. These stones rarely, if ever, form transparent crystals. Rather, they hide their strength behind an opaque mask, obscuring the power they possess. Is it safe to pair malachite with these other crystals? Thank you, Maria

Yes, malachite is pretty versatile. It works well with copper-based crystals, other green crystals or earth element stones, but can be paired with any of these “Safe Travel” crystals. Don’t use it in elixirs though.

I found your site by accident (or maybe the crystals pointed me to you) I am travelling to Canada on my own so require protection. I asked the crystals that I already had but they did not seem happy – as I was in town I went to a crystal shop (used before) for a piece of Malachite, while there two more crystals made themselves known to me so I purchased them and brought them home. I now feel that I can travel more easily and be less nervous.

Malachite is a mineral of copper carbonate hydroxide, known for its trademark green color. As Ashley Leavy , founder and educational director of the  Love and Light School of Crystal Therapy , tells mbg, malachite is primarily found today in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as Russia and Namibia.

Much of the malachite you'll see today often has bands or stripes of dark and light green. It can be tumbled into smaller stones, and there's also something called "velvet malachite," which features tiny needlelike formations, Leavy says.

Malachite can also be found naturally alongside azurite, sometimes forming into one bigger crystal. Other formations include "botryoidal formations," which look like bubbles, as well as fan-like formations of longer crystals.

Leavy says malachite has been used historically throughout ancient Egypt, Greece, and medieval Europe for everything from makeup to protection amulets. And because copper can be extracted from malachite, "you can imagine that when people saw this liquid, orange-red metal coming out of the green stones, they felt this was very magical," she explains, adding, "This links malachite with the process of alchemy and transformation and magic, so those themes are strongly connected with it even still."

And speaking of makeup, Leavy does note that you have to be particularly careful with more fibrous forms of malachite, as the dust or powder that comes off it can be very toxic if inhaled. "For the most part, tumbled pieces are totally safe to handle, but it's not a good idea to get them wet. It's also a really good idea to be super cautious if you're handling rough or fibrous malachite, and to wash your hands thoroughly," she says.

As Leavy explains, the bands seen wrapping around a piece of malachite can sometimes look like eyes, adding that this may add even more significance to the use of malachite powder as eye makeup in ancient civilizations.

In Peru, gold and silver bracelets were meant to complement each other symbolically. Gold represented the sun, the day, and the masculine. Silver represented the moon, the night, and the feminine. These two bright, powerful metals held one another in balance. In Central America, natural materials decorated men's jewelry to signify a connection to place. Metals, bone, shells, bird feathers (especially the beautiful quetzal bird), and carved stones (particularly jade for its power of fertility and life) protected and decorated the wearer.

Many traditional artisans employ the handcrafted techniques of their ancestors, which favored a slow, methodical approach in a small workshop, as opposed to mass production. Today, they preserve these methodologies while intentionally distinguishing their approaches from those of large factories. Respect for the environment, and for animal and human life drive the artwork itself. Natural materials are often a sign that a product is eco-friendly. Additionally, many artisans look for ways to reuse or recycle in their artwork. Some choose to repurpose old wood or fabric. Some recycle glass beads or up-cycle plastic and discarded paper. Others follow practices that conserve resources, like water and energy, and are mindful of the pollutants they release into the environment. Shopping from organizations that promote eco-friendly products is the best way to ensure that you are receiving a unique item that does not damage the world through its making.

Handcrafted mens jewelry captures our undying passion for symbols and meaning through a variety of designs, emblems, and carvings. In ancient Peru, men wore necklaces adorned with pendants of human, animal, and divine characters. A common symbol that has withstood the test of time is the Andean Chakana, or the staggered cross, that attests to the relationship between humankind and the cosmos. In Bali, mens jewelry integrated the cross, the sign of freedom, and Ongkara symbol for oneness and spirituality. In Central America, carved glyphs were commonly used. Animal figures and bird feathers (like the quetzal and macaw) had special significance, as did natural stones. In India, Om and Ganesha symbols are used for protection, prosperity and purity. In West Africa, Gye nyame, symbolizing Gods deep power and infinite knowledge, is still used on necklaces.

There is no right way to wear mens rings. Right hand, left hand, ring finger or thumb, where you place your ring is as much a matter of preference and comfort as it is style. Besides the common ring finger to signify love or marriage, other fingers of note are the index finger, which symbolizes power, leadership, and authority in some cultures, and the thumb, which can signify wealth. Wherever you choose to don it, a handmade ring should be as unique as the man who wears it.

Like many things, when it comes to great craftsmanship, the evidence is in the details. We asked artisans what they look for in a good necklace, and heres what they told us. Keep your eye out for the smooth functioning of the lock. It should clasp easily and cleanly. Examine the weldings of the chain joints, and pay attention to the surface of the jewelry. Is it finished in high polish? Are handcrafted details evident? Are engravings handmade? Artisans also look for uniqueness in design, integrity of workmanship, and high-quality materials. Necklaces should be free from dents, and beads should stay fastened in place. No chips in the gemstones, no cuts in the bezel, and no obvious glue marks of any kind. While these standards may seem high, we believe that artisan jewelry should aim for the stars.

The materials that comprise handmade artisan necklaces are as varied as the makers themselves. Craftspeople all over the world use metals, like sterling silver, gold, copper and brass, to perfect their designs. Cotton or nylon cord and leather are also common materials used in traditional mens jewelry. Wooden beads, cow bones, coconut shells, bamboo, and gemstones all adorn mens necklaces from across the globe.

Unique, stylish, and handcrafted. These are the guiding principles of wearing men's jewelry with confidence. There are no rules when it comes to men's bracelets. You can wear simple leather, or a combination of metals. You can go understated or bold. Colorful or subdued. However you choose to display your handmade jewelry, what matters most is that you discover pieces that attest to your own originality.

Techniques that rely on handmade craftsmanship honor the cultures and regions from which they come. In Bali, repouss, or the art of silver filigree, is still preserved by artisans today. In Central America, jewelry-makers work with natural stones, especially jade, in order to celebrate the techniques and materials used by their ancestors. In India, sterling silver jewelry is made through intricate jali carving or rawa (silver beading). Hand-casting and gemstone-cutting have also been passed down through the generations, and today, make their way into unique works of wearable art. In West Africa, fabrication (including soldering or welding) is a technique that has stood the test of time, as has leather twisting, which adorns mens jewelry from bracelets to necklaces.

The traditional techniques used to create artisan jewelry are as diverse as the cultures from which they come. In Peru, the ancient technique of handmade goldsmithing continues in the work of filigree, the art of weaving silver threads together. Originally brought to the Andes during the colonial period, filigree acquired local nuances and incorporated designs inspired by nature and daily life. In Bali, handmade jewelry makes use of a method called repouss, a decorative, detail-oriented artform that uses hammers and punches to raise metal in relief from the background of the ring. In West Africa, fabrication, casting, and forging are common handcrafted techniques, whereas in India, it is common to see cut gemstones intricately fitted within silver segments.

Malachite — Part II: Banded Beauty Comes from Russia and the Congo

One of the earliest-known sources of malachite was mined by the Egyptians in the Sinai Desert thousands of years ago. Since that time, this lovely, green hydrous copper carbonate has been mined in quantity all over the world. To describe more than a fraction of all the sources of this mineral would be impossible in a magazine article, but a handful of sources are astounding, due to the sheer quantity or unusual types of malachite they produced.

Russia’s Ural Mountains was once the source of tons of the world’s most beautiful banded malachite, and the copper mines of the Katanga (Shaba) Copperbelt of Central Africa are currently yielding huge masses of green copper carbonate. Russia is unquestionably famous for its amazing banded malachite gem material. Artisans, decorators, and museum experts agree that Russian malachite is the most beautiful in the world. It was mined in such quantities that artisans were able to produce breathtaking malachite objects that are now found worldwide. Visit stately palaces in Mexico, England and Europe, and many state buildings and countless museums throughout the world, and you can view wonderful creations made of Russia’s malachite. These objects are highly prized and eagerly displayed, and their value borders on priceless.

Legacy of Marvelous Malachite

Russian malachite exhibits light- to dark-green bands, some so dark as to be almost black. The bands can be any width, from under an inch to several inches wide. The curving, undulating bands are spectacular, taking many forms, from bull’s-eyes to graceful, sweeping curves.

Two Russian copper mines, the Mednorodyskoye and Gumshevskit, established in the Middle Ural Mountains in the 1800s, were particularly productive of large pieces of malachite. Among the multiton masses of malachite recovered was one chunk that weighed around 250 tons, with many others in the 50-ton range! These large masses were not completely solid, but were shot through with vugs and cavities. This made obtaining large slabs impossible, but explains why the Russians developed the technique called “Russian malachite mosaic”.

The czars recognized the value of this material immediately, and had huge quantities shipped to the royal lapidary works in Ekaterinburg. Established in 1723 by Peter the Great, it is named for his wife, Yekaterina, who became Catherine the Great . In them, the malachite masses were turned into objects of art in an orgy of creation: breathtaking vases, fireplace mantles and frames, clock bodies, candelabra, table and desktops, and many other items. The Russians even used malachite to decorate an entire room.

What most of us do not realize is that the huge malachite objects of art are not solid—they are veneered! The veneering technique was developed by Russian artisans because the malachite was too vuggy to be cut into large, solid slices. The technique known as Russian mosaic involves making an object out of metal, such as copper, or stone, like basalt or marble, then veneering it with thin slices of malachite. The patterns of these slices had to be carefully matched—band to band, natural design to natural design—so that the finished work looked like solid malachite.

Malachite in Many Forms

How large are some of these Russian malachite mosaics? The malachite-veneered doors leading into the heart of Chapultepec Palace, in Mexico City, are about 10 feet high. Even more amazing are the malachite columns in Saint Isaac’s Cathedral , in Saint Petersburg. There are five columns on either side of the entrance to the altar—10 columns in all. Each measures 40 feet high and 2 feet across. The core of each fluted column is a copper cylinder, and the cylinders have been veneered with malachite.

If you have ever done much lapidary work, you know how difficult it is to cut thin slices of malachite, which is a relatively soft mineral (Mohs 4). The Russian lapidary artists had to cut the Uralian malachite into thin sheets that measured only 1 mm thick! Cutting thin slabs is difficult enough; try matching them to each other so that the finished object looks as if it is a solid malachite piece. Each and every color, each and every band and swirl, had to match up! Today, the old glue is drying out, and repairs have to be made on these malachite mosaic objects. Still, you can’t see the joints where these pieces of malachite have been matched.

I was fortunate to visit Saint Isaac’s Cathedral while shooting the video “Russian Gem Treasures” . I wanted to photograph those 10 malachite columns, but ran into a problem: Photographs were not allowed unless you paid for the privilege. Officials told my producer, Michael Leybov, that it would cost me $100; however, if Michael, a Russian, took the photos, the fee was only $10! So I set up my tripod and camera and got everything framed properly, and then Michael pushed the camera plunger again and again.

As impressive as the Saint Isaac’s columns are, I found the Malachite Room, in the Winter Palace—now the State Hermitage Museum —to be the most remarkable. The room is larger than a basketball court. At one end is a malachite fireplace with gold trim. There are columns, tables, and a huge assortment of objects done in malachite and gold. Even the chandeliers were made of malachite. It was really a green sight to behold!

Evolution of Malachite Sources

I doubt there is an official count of the number of objects that were made from Russian

malachite. Czars used them as important and very showy gifts when they traveled to visit dignitaries and royals in other countries, so they are all around the world.

Unfortunately, the supply of malachite from Russia’s mines dried up long ago. The lapidary orgy ended relatively quickly in the years following the discoveries, and Russian malachite is no longer seen on the mineral market.

Fortunately, another malachite source, this one in Central Africa, came to light in the early years of the 20th century. The copper deposits, however, were well known to natives hundreds of years before the Europeans invaded. Known early on as the Roan-Antelope Belt, this vast copper-bearing region is now called the Katanga (or Shaba) Copperbelt. It extends over a vast part of the southern Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire).

The area trends northwest to southeast and covers an area of over 150 miles by over 40 miles. It holds at least six operating open-pit mines, which produce tons of malachite and other copper minerals, along with cobalt minerals.

Velvet Malachite

Some “primary” malachite has been found in the Katanga Copperbelt, but far more important are the vast tonnages of malachite that have been mined. The bulk of the malachite is solid, velvet malachite, but there are also huge quantities of superb malachite stalactites and stalagmites. These long, tapering, green structures can reach well over a foot in length and are found in multiple units of subparallel growths in all sizes. When cut across the vertical, the stalactites reveal a beautiful interior with circular bands. Many of these formations take a wonderful polish.

The velvet malachite pieces from the Katanga source can be huge. Some pieces I’ve seen exceed 3 feet in length, and I suspect their size is governed only by the miner’s ability to extract them from the deposit.

As for cutting-grade malachite, very large quantities have been mined in this African country and used in many ways. It is not unusual to see a malachite dealer at a show offering large quantities of carved and polished malachite objects like animals, ashtrays, eggs, candleholders, and just about anything else imaginable. Larger polished pieces are used for decorative displays, and lapidary artists love to work with good, solid Zaire malachite. They keep in mind that inhaling the dust of any copper species is apt to cause breathing problems over time.

Superb examples of the use of cutting-grade malachite include slices cut from stalactites, with their bull’s-eye patterns. Zaire malachite is seen in the magnificent work of Jim Kaufman and Nicolai Medvedev, intarsia artists whom we featured in the article “Russian Renaissance”, in the November 1984 issue of Rock & Gem . It seems most appropriate to me that Medvedev, a very talented Russian lapidary, has applied his talents to malachite from Zaire. His work is now seen at major gem shows and displayed in museums like the noted Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Arts , in Elmhurst, Illinois, and the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian).

Assorted Malachite

The supply of African malachite seems endless, but it should be noted that most mineral collectors are far more excited about the wonderful assortment of minerals, including rose-colored cobaltian calcite and superb, lustrous, octahedral crystals of carrollite, that come from these mines. In fact, dozens of fine mineral species have been found in the copper deposits of the Katanga Copperbelt, ensuring a good supply of minerals for the future.

While malachite is a common secondary mineral in countless copper deposits, one form of this green mineral that is particularly appealing to collectors is malachite pseudomorphs after a mineral, most often azurite. Bisbee, Arizona, was noted for its specimens, and the Russian mines certainly yielded fine ones in its day. The recent malachite pseudomorphs from the Milpillas mine, in Sonora, Mexico are considered world-class.

Two sources of unusual malachite specimens should be mentioned: the historically important copper mine at Chessy-les-Mines, France, and the more recently worked Emke mine, in Namibia. Both deposits produced fine, malachite-coated cuprite crystals. The Chessy crystals are almost always simple octahedrons, under an inch long, though some crystals do exceed that. Small clusters of two or three octahedrons were also found. This mine was worked in the 1700s and 1800s, and any specimens seen today are from old collections.

Cuprites Specimens

The malachite-coated cuprite specimens from the Emke mine came out in the latter part of the 1900s. One report I received while there was that, upon entering the mine after a blast, the miners saw an exposed wall of calcite on which were many large malachite-coated cuprite crystals on calcite. The cuprite crystals were all dodecahedrons, some of them elongate.

The cuprites, when the malachite was removed, proved to be gemmy red and could be faceted into large gems—300 carats or more. When I visited the site in the 1990s, the mine was closed and nothing was available. The internet and mineral shows are the only sources for these important malachite-coated cuprites now.

These two articles have only touched on malachite, the copper carbonate that is a wonderful display mineral and a superb and most colorful lapidary material.

Malachite: Renaissance of the Russian gem

Malachite is an ornamental stone that has a unique appearance – its deep green colour interspersed with black streaks is entirely idiosyncratic and cannot be confused with any other mineral. Everywhere in the world, malachite is rightly considered a Russian gemstone thanks to the famed deposits in the Ural Mountains. They are even mentioned in the short story collection of Russian writer P.P. Bazhov: "The Malachite Box". Despite the fact that malachite is primarily associated with the grandmothers jewellery, contemporary designers and brands found new uses for the unique stone, and one could say that malachite is experiencing something of a renaissance.

Throughout the 19th century, craftsmen worked with large pieces of malachite – fashioning them into home décor items and household utensils: jewellery boxes, vases, snuff boxes etc. There is even a malachite room in the State Hermitage Museum - the highest aristocracy used to indulge in these grand works of malachite ornamentation.

Working with the rough, jewellers began to admire unique patterning of malachite that, like lace, covered the work surface under the saw. However, guided primarily by the shapes they were making, the masters were unable to do justice to the beauty of the mineral and exploit all of the intricacies of the black - green pattern. 

Danila, the character from Bazhov's story ‘The Malachite Box’, said: “What about highlighting the beauty of the gemstone? Instead of working off its patterns, you drill them and carve flowers over them. What’s the point? This way you only spoil the beauty of the gemstone.”

Over time, the natural allure of malachite began to captivate jewellers: silver and gold brooches, as well as earrings and beads began to appear. Until recently, this was a phenomenon mainly confined to Russia. Nevertheless, over the last several years, famous houses from various countries around the world have begun to include malachite jewellery in their permanent collections: Cartier has minimalistic 'Amulette de Cartier' collection featuring pendants, ring, earrings and bracelet, Bulgari has 'Diva's Dream' jewellery, Chopard has 'Happy Hearts', while Van Cleef & Arpels has the 'Alhambra.' However, it was Boucheron who have very skillfully incorporated malachite into their high jewellery collection - ‘Nature Triomphante’ as opposed to everday jewellery.

The luxurious collection consists of three chapters, with the second being Boucheron 'Surréaliste'. It included about six pieces that showcased malachite motif. Despite the fact that this mineral  usually serves as an accompaniment to the main gems, in Boucheron it played a supporting role in only a couple of the pieces, the rest had a prominent representation of malachite. One of the most memorable pieces of jewellery – the 'Papillon Chromatic' necklace – was richly adorned with a flock of butterflies, the wings of which were carved from malachite. I was also impressed by the 'Manchette Graphique' cuff – embellished with geometric inlays and beads from this beautiful patterned stone.

Thanks to the complex design crafted by mother nature herself – malachite is quite self-sufficient and works best in a design with very few additional decorative elements. That is why it is most often used as a part of fairly minimalist jewellery, such as the earrings, pendants and rings by Roberto Coin in their 'Carnaby Street' and 'Sauvage Privé' collection, or the VMAR hoop earrings and the Q-Ore bracelets and pendants – both from the 'Mariana' collection.

Malachite does not exceed a four on the Mohs scale – a measure of the mineral’s hardness. This means the stone is relatively soft and is ideal for carving. As an example, consider the work of art by the English contemporary artist Damien Hirst that depicts the cut off head of the Gorgon medusa – the entire object is made out of malachite. Pay particular attention to how highly detailed both the head and the snakes are! In the art of jewellery, examples are usually much less intricate, and it is more common to see various flat shapes cut out of the malachite: hearts from Chopard, quatrefoils from Van Cleef & Arpels, three-leaved flowers from Luca Carati are just three among many examples.

Jewellery designers use malachite not only because of its attractive patterning, but also its spiritual associations. For example, Maral Melhem, founder of the VMAR brand, asserts that “malachite is a not just a beautiful green gemstone but it’s also important for protection as it absorbs negative energies whether from the atmosphere or our bodies. Malachite also has an ability to clear and activate the chakras as well as attunes to spiritual guidance.”

The gemstone I dedicated the article to is considered to be an inexpensive semi-precious stone, but nevertheless its potential is huge. Price and value are two different things, and now more and more jewellers are choosing their materials on a purely aesthetic basis, and not based on how they affect the price of the work after its completion.

Judge known for punishing Kremlin foes mysteriously falls to her death from a window

A prominent Russian judge has died after mysteriously falling from a high-rise building in Moscow.

Natalia Larina, 50, was known for convicting enemies of the Kremlin as well as high profile criminal cases.

She was found dead close to her apartment block on 1st Mashinostroeniya Street.

An investigation into the death has been launched, with police checking claims she had lost a large sum of money to a ‘telephone scammer’, state media reports.

Sources say she became upset she had been ‘deceived’ and left a note.

‌However, so far there has been no official confirmation of this version.

‌Ms Larina – who had a young daughter – was a criminal judge for more than 15 years, and her death came months after she suddenly quit Tagansky Court.

‌In 2015, she remanded in custody artist Pyotr Pavlensky who set fire to a door of the FSB building in Lubyanka Square in a political protest.

‌Earlier she gave a judgement against the hardline National Bolsheviks.

‌In 2011, Ms Larina sentenced Ministry of Transport official Vladimir Makarov, accused of sexually abusing his daughter.

‌‌She also acted as a judge in various high profile fraud cases.

Several high profile figures in Russia have died in mysterious circumstances in recent years, often falling from high buildings or suddenly becoming ill.

In February a prominent military blogger was found dead , reportedly by suicide, after disclosing Vladimir Putin’s  colossal losses  in eastern  Ukraine .

Pro-war correspondent Andrei ‘Murz’ Morozov revealed that 16,000 soldiers were killed in the battle for Avdiivka.

In December the body of  Vladimir Putin  ally, Vladimir Egorov, 46, was found dead following a suspected fall from a third-floor window.

He was a member of the ruling United  Russia  party and prominent politician in the oil-rich Tobolsk region in western Siberia.

Earlier that month, the deputy editor of  Putin’s ‘favourite newspaper’ was been found dead at her home in mysterious circumstances.

Anna Tsareva, 35, worked for pro-Putin newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda and was found unresponsive at her home in Moscow this morning.

Her death came just a year after her former boss  also died in a suspicious manner  following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

And in July last year, veteran Russian diplomat Alexander Nikolayev, 72, died three weeks after falling victim to a mysterious attack near his country house in the Tver region.

French citizen arrested in Moscow on charges of collecting military data

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s top state criminal investigation agency on Thursday announced the arrest of a French citizen accused of collecting information on military issues, a move that comes as relations between Russia and France have grown increasingly tense over the fighting in Ukraine.

The arrest was announced just as France hosted world leaders on the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday. Russia wasn’t invited.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said the suspect, whom it didn’t identify, is accused of failing to register with authorities as a foreign agent while collecting “information about military and military-technical activities of the Russian Federation.” It added that the information could be used to the detriment of the country’s security.

Russia’s state news agency Tass identified the arrested French citizen as Laurent Vinatier, an employee of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), a Geneva-based nongovernment organization.

HD confirmed Vinatier’s detention in a statement released to The Associated Press.

“We are aware that Laurent Vinatier, an adviser at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), has been detained in Russia,” it said. “We are working to get more details of the circumstances and to secure Laurent’s release.”

French President Emmanuel Macron told French television Thursday night that the French citizen was “in no way…working for France” and that he “works for a Swiss NGO founded by former UN chief Kofi Annan and which carries out diplomacy of working discussions.″

He is receiving consular protection, Macron said.

Vinatier’s LinkedIn page, which describes him as a “conversationalist,” says he has worked for the center for over a decade and indicates that he has had a focus mostly on former Soviet republics, Turkey and the Middle East over the years.

Russia’s Investigative Committee posted a video showing officers detaining the suspect at a cafe and driving him to the committee’s Moscow offices for interrogation. The charges carry a penalty of up to five years in prison.

The arrest comes during a strain in Russian-French ties that followed French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements about the possibility of deploying the country’s troops in Ukraine.

Moscow has warned that French soldiers would be legitimate targets for Russia if they are sent to Ukraine.

The charges against the French citizen are based on a recently approved law that requires anyone who collects information on military issues to register with authorities as a foreign agent.

Human rights activists have criticized the law and other newly endorsed legislation as part of a multi-pronged Kremlin crackdown on independent media and political activists intended to muzzle criticism of its actions in Ukraine.

Arrests on charges of spying and collecting sensitive data have become increasingly frequent in Russia since it sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

Recent high-profile arrests include Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested on espionage charges in March 2023, and U.S.-Russian journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, who was taken into custody in October 2023 for failing to register as a “foreign agent.”

A Chinese was arrested in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district for allegedly not carrying valid travel documents, police said on Friday.

The Chinese man was apprehended on Thursday near Laxmi Chowk under the jurisdiction of the Brahmapura Police Station, Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Kumar said.

A map of China, one mobile phone and three small stone statues were recovered from his possession, the SSP said.The Chinese, identified as Li Jiaqi, is a resident of the Shandong province of the neighbouring country.

“The Chinese man was arrested for not carrying valid travel documents, including visa. A case has been registered against him under the relevant sections of the Foreigners Act,” the officer said.

The SSP said senior police officers were interrogating him to ascertain the purpose of his visit to India.
