Community Overview

mission trip puerto rico

VIEW PHOTOS

Puerto Rico has experienced crisis after crisis ever since Hurricane Maria whipped through the U.S. island territory in 2017 with tornado-level winds, drenching the island with intense flooding, crippling communications, and decimating countless homes. In 2019, the island was struck by an earthquake swarm, displacing many families from their homes. The global pandemic slowed rebuilding and recovery and has left the territory in a fragile economic state. In 2022 Hurricane Fiona brought massive flooding and blackouts from the hurricane have left thousands of households to attempt to rebuild once more.

In order to help and encourage this island community who have been through so much, we're continuing to partner with incredible local organizations in Puerto Rico to connect willing volunteer groups to relief and service trips. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of real people in need, this will be a great trip for your group.

Will you come alongside the people of this often-forgotten territory on a 2024 Puerto Rico mission trip ?

NOTE: EM teams to Puerto Rico will partner with ministries with either The Family Church or The Happy Givers. Registering teams will work with an EM community coordinator to determine which ministry is the best fit.   Fill out an interest form  to get started and learn more!

Details & Logistics

Trip activities & opportunities.

In Puerto Rico we partner with a local organization called Hunger Corp to support teams like you who help families recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria.

Work Projects

Home Repairs: Puerto Rico has a large demographic of elderly people who live simple lives in small cement homes. Most do not have the means to maintain their homes. Repairs may include simple electrical, patching roofs, painting, removing debris, deep cleaning, and landscaping.

Food Production: Puerto Rico currently imports 80% of its food products even though the climate is ideal for year-round food production. Our partners are working to change this food dependence. They have purchased raw land and have been thoughtfully turning it into sustainable gardens and orchards. Your team may participate in land clearing, building raised beds, mixing and sifting organic soil, building hydroponic systems, planting trees and seeds, and other agricultural tasks.

Meal Distribution: Our partners have a kitchen dedicated to the preparation of hot, nutritious meals which are delivered to the elderly. One of the long-term goals is that the gardens will eventually produce much of the food that is used in these meals. Your team may be involved in harvesting, cleaning, preparing, and delivering meals to the elderly or the homeless.

Outreach Opportunities

Groups that serve in Puerto Rico may also have the opportunity to engage in outreach ministry through food programs, beachside prayer gatherings, beach clean-up, and kids ministry. These opportunities will be solidified as your trip gets closer.

*Experience Mission works closely with local leaders to identify work projects and ministry opportunities that address authentic needs within the community. We ask that you come with a servant's heart and willingness to adapt to the unique qualities represented in each location. Opportunities can vary significantly from one week to the next. Your team may work at one location or serve at multiple locations each day. Due to the changing needs of our community partners, we cannot confirm your specific activities until your team arrives.

Lodging, Food & Transportation

Teams serving in Puerto Rico, will be staying at an air-conditioned ministry house in a gated property.

Sleeping quarters include multiple bedrooms, small kitchens and shared living spaces all with air conditioning. Beds, sheets and pillows are provided.

There will be modern toilet facilities available where you are staying. Indoor and outdoor private showers are available.

The housing facilities have plumbing and running water. “The food and drink standards in Puerto Rico are comparable to those of the mainland United States. The tap water is safe to drink as it is filtered and treated at the source.” ( discoverpuertorico.com )

Electricity is mostly stable, but there are times when it may go out for several hours. You can expect to have electricity at your lodging facilities without any significant issues. Cell phone and data connection are decent for all major carriers, although there are many spots where it may be weak.

Breakfast and dinner will be provided at the ministry house/church, and you will pack sack lunches to bring with you to work each day. There will be at least one opportunity to enjoy a locally made Puerto Rican meal. Curious about EM's ability to accommodate specific food restrictions? View EM's Food Policy

If your team is serving with The Happy Givers in Vega Alta you will fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan.

If your team is serving with The Family Church in Rincon you will fly into Rafael Hernández Marín International Airport (BQN) in Aguadilla.

You as a team are responsible for covering the cost of your round-trip airfare to Puerto Rico and should make plans to arrive after lunch on the first day of your selected trip.

Checkout time is 10 a.m. on the last day of your selected trip. If your return flight departs later in the day you may want to walk around Old San Juan or the Old Aguadilla Lighthouse Ruins with your extra time.

Your team's transportation to, from, and while in Puerto Rico is NOT covered. You will need vehicles throughout the entire week to transport your team to various locations for work and ministry.

Because Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States you do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico! Adults will be required to show a state-issued photo I.D. card, such as a driver's license or a non-driving photo I.D.

All minors (younger than 18) need a signed and notarized medical release while in Puerto Rico. Team leaders should keep these documents on hand throughout the trip.

Health & Safety

Staff Certification All Summer Staff are certified in First Aid and CPR.

Medical Kits Medical kits that include first-aid supplies for general accidents and ailments are provided for each site. EM Staff will not dispense any medications. We ask that teams supply their own medications like Tylenol, Ibuprofin, Benadryl and Imodium as they deem necessary.

Emergency Response Plan Based on the severity of each emergency, EM has a plan for appropriate response.

- If a team member becomes seriously ill, they will be taken to a local doctor to receive appropriate medical attention and medications. If they are a minor, their Team Leader along with our staff will accompany them to the clinic. If needed, their parents will be contacted. Their recovery will be carefully monitored by our staff.

- If there is an accident that requires a doctor, but is not life-threatening and does not have the potential to cause permanent damage, Experience Mission staff will locate the Team Leader, contact parents or guardians (providing the injured is a minor), and provide safe but quick transportation to a local clinic.

- In the event that an accident occurs which is life-threatening or has the potential for permanent damage, emergency 9-1-1 services will be contacted immediately. The family will be contacted to assist in guidance for an appropriate response.

All medical care is the sole responsibility of the team member. Experience Mission requires every team member to be covered by domestic medical insurance and recommends that team members traveling abroad carry additional international travel insurance to cover any medical needs their domestic medical insurance may not cover.

Immunizations As with all mission trips, it is essential that volunteers are up to date on all childhood immunizations. Each volunteer must also have a tetanus shot.

For more information about health concerns and recommended immunizations, you can visit the CDC travelers guide to Puerto Rico . You should consult your local doctor prior to receiving any immunizations.

Puerto Rico Trip FAQs

What age group can you accommodate in Puerto Rico? These trips are open for high school age youth and older. Because of the nature of the work there, we are unable to make many exceptions. View all EM mission trips for Jr. High students .

How much do Puerto Rico mission trips cost? The cost of this trip in 2023 is $845-$995/person (depending on your chosen location). This includes all lodging, food, staffing, and trip-related expenses. Note that all construction projects are generally provided at no cost to families. Your fees help cover this blessing for homeowners.

What seasons do you offer Puerto Rico mission trips? Trips to Puerto Rico take place in the spring and summer. To see more spring options, check out this list of all available spring break trips .

Will we work with children in Puerto Rico? There may be various opportunities to engage with local families in the community, and taking breaks to get to know these families (and children) during the workweek is highly encouraged.

What paperwork is required for this mission trip? Each team member will need to fill out a team member registration form and liability waiver, and all adults 18.5 years and older are required to pass a background check . All minors (younger than 18) must have a signed and notarized medical release while in Puerto Rico. Team Leaders should keep these on hand for the duration of the trip. Your mission trip support representative will contact you if any other paperwork is required.

Where will my mission team stay in Puerto Rico? Teams will stay at a guesthouse on the campus of our partner organization. Your mission trip support representative will be able to provide you with specific details 30 days prior to your trip.

How does transportation work during Puerto Rico mission trips? Ground transportation is NOT included for our Puerto Rico trips. Vehicles can be rented at or near the airport at major US companies (Alamo, Enterprise, Hertz) or smaller local companies (Target, Charlie's, Dario's). Your team will enjoy the independence of having your own transportation as there are many local beaches, souvenir shops, and eateries to explore during your free time!

Will my team have free time? Each morning, there is time set aside for devotions and quiet time. This is a valuable time and we strongly encourage all team members to spend it with God, journaling their thoughts and experiences as the days unfold. EM will provide a physical or printable devotional journal. There is also time in the evening for what we call Evening Gathering, a moment to debrief, reflect and worship. Throughout the week there will be pockets of time to explore the community, get souvenirs and swim at the beach.

What time should I arrive on the first day in Puerto Rico? Teams are asked to arrive after lunch on the first day of their selected trip.

Can I extend my stay through the weekend? We are unable to accommodate teams after Friday morning. We encourage teams who are interested in experiencing the tourism options in Puerto Rico to book a hotel or vacation home. This is a meaningful way to support the once-thriving tourism industry as the locals continue to recover.

Will I need a passport for a Puerto Rico mission trip? No! US citizens only need to show a valid drivers license or state ID. For more information, contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection .

What do I pack for a Puerto Rico mission trip? Your work clothes should include long pants, socks tall enough that pant cuffs can be tucked in at the ankle, closed-toed shoes, t-shirts, and work gloves. Shorts, sandals, and modest tank tops are fine for free time. Ladies should pack a skirt for church. Please also pack sunscreen, bug repellant, hats, sunglasses, swimsuits, and beach towels.

Does EM have any Covid requirements for teams? We ask that teams bring 1-2 masks/person and 2-4 rapid tests in the event that someone on your team becomes sick during the trip. Outside of that, we simply recommend that teams follow current CDC recommendations regarding travel, testing, and what to do if you're exposed or get sick. View EM's Current Covid Guidance

Does EM offer any other similar mission trips? Yes! EM is also offering multiple community noptions for Caribbean mission trips .

Partner with churches to facilitate VBS, hurricane relief projects, evangelism, community outreach

Puerto Rico is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea and home to approximately 3.4 million people. It is formally a part of the United States (no passport needed for U.S. citizens!). This tropical paradise has been a popular tourist destination for years, but when Hurricane Maria hit in September 2017, everything changed. Devastated by the storm, the region has had a hard time rebuilding and is still in desperate need of practical assistance, and most of all, the life-changing hope of the gospel. Many times, it is when people are in desperate need that they are most responsive to the good news of salvation through faith in Christ. We hope to take advantage of this window of opportunity by working with local churches to repair homes, show the sincere love of Christ, and point people to the path to salvation along the way.

Puerto Rico provides a perfect opportunity for youth or adult groups to go on an inexpensive “overseas mission trip” in a foreign context without leaving the United States .

What will my team be doing?

Mission Teams will work alongside missionaries and local churches to do daily hurricane relief repairs and clean up, including house repairs. In addition, teams will be a part of youth and children’s outreach that will help churches and church plants in the areas. If teams are suited, they may also be involved with special adult outreach, beach ministry, door-to-door survey work, music/drama ministry, etc. We have several great contacts with local churches, Christian Schools, and other helpful contacts on the Island. Our vision for ministry in Puerto Rico includes evangelism and discipleship in all of our endeavors—even hurricane relief work will be focused on evangelism and discipleship.

What does a general weekly schedule look like?

Saturday. Travel day. Arrive and get settled in.

Sunday. Worship at local church. Afternoon beach day and sightseeing (Old San Juan, Fuerte San Felipe del Morro, San Juan Cathedral, numerous museums, etc.).

Monday - Thursday.  Ministry: VBS, home repairs and construction, evangelism, sports ministry, door to door visits.

Friday.  Travel day. Depart for home.

What does my cost include?

Housing. Your team will sleep in bunk bed style accommodations with access to hot showers and bathrooms.

Meals.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day! (Note: You need to pay for your own meals at the airport, while traveling, etc.)

T-Shirt.   Every participant gets an awesome mission trip t-shirt.

Pre-Trip Training Material. We provide training sessions, trip overview documents, assistance from our team of mission trip experts, and communication with in-country missionaries to make sure your group is fully prepared for your trip.

Pre, During, and Post-trip Devotionals.   This 4-week printed missions journal will help every team member grow and encounter Christ.

Note: In-country transportation is NOT included for this trip. You will need to secure your own rental vehicles in Puerto Rico for the week. For all of our international locations, transportation is completely covered as part of the cost. But for domestic locations, including Puerto Rico which is a U.S. territory, you would need to rent vehicles for the week. Anyone with a valid U.S. license can drive, and our team can help with the process of securing vehicles, but they are not included in the trip cost.

Airfare is not included in the trip cost, but will be taken care of by Servant Life's travel agent who gets humanitarian rates and often free baggage. You may book on your own if you prefer to do so, but we ask to approve the itinerary first.

Pray for good weather. If we get rain, it’s possible that the outdoor projects will be cancelled for the day. Catholic Mission Trips, Inc., will try to arrange both outdoor and indoor projects for each group.

Puerto Rico's multifaceted landscape stretches from the shoreline to the highlands. Inhabitants are deeply rooted in history, closely tied to the land and culture, and take immense pride in their Puerto Rican lifestyle.

In recent times, Puerto Rico has weathered hurricanes, earthquakes, a global health crisis, and economic difficulties, with rural regions bearing the brunt of these adversities. Amoveo's work in Puerto Rico centers on our collaboration with our local church and community development partners, who face a myriad of challenges, including the restoration of crumbling infrastructure, enhancement of living conditions, and the provision of services to a growing population.

The Amoveo Mission Base offers a comfortable dorm room setting inside a local Christian College. It includes individual showers, eating facilities, and plenty of space to plan and debrief. On the property is a fire pit and comfortable places to sit back and interact with other members of your team.

How You’ll Serve

On your mission trip to Puerto Rico, you'll have the opportunity to serve in a variety of impactful ways:

  • Home Restoration: You'll assist in rebuilding homes that were devastated by Hurricane Fiona, providing a safe and secure environment for families in need.
  • Street Children Care: You'll provide comfort and support to street children, offering them a sense of community and hope.
  • Community Center Assistance: You'll lend a hand at the local Community Center, contributing to their daily operations and activities.

  • Spiritual Connection: Through all these activities, you'll experience the work of God in Puerto Rico, deepening your spiritual connection and understanding of your faith.

Amoveo Group was founded in 2013 by leaders with decades of experience working and living among marginalized communities and exists to see broken systems fixed in communities worldwide through partnering and investing in creative and sustainable solutions. They are involved in mobilizing people, material, and financial investment in projects which spur sustainable solutions to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. 2025

In a world where many teens grapple with anxiety, worry, and stress, this year's theme, "Equipped," highlights how God provides us with the tools for a fulfilling Christian life. Drawing from 2 Corinthians 9:8, the focus is on embracing how God enables us to approach fully living out our faith with confidence. From spiritual readiness to engaging in God's mission, it's about more than going through the motions; it's living out faith in practical ways through love, kindness, and action.

puerto rico mission trip

Puerto Rico is a US territory located in the Caribbean, and while it may be a popular tourist destination, the island has faced a number of challenges in recent years. Hurricane Maria, which hit in 2017, was one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern history, leaving much of the island without power, water, or other basic necessities for months. The hurricane also caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, leaving many people struggling to get by.

In addition to the damage caused by the hurricane, Puerto Rico has also faced economic challenges in recent years. The island has been in a recession for over a decade, and many residents are struggling with poverty and unemployment. While the island has made strides towards recovery, there is still much work to be done. That’s where mission trips come in.

By planning a Puerto Rico mission trip, you can help make a difference in the lives of those in need. Whether you’re providing disaster relief or working on community development projects, your efforts can have a profound impact on the people of Puerto Rico.

What to expect on a mission trip to Puerto Rico

If you’re planning a Puerto Rico mission trip, there are a few things you should expect. First and foremost, you can expect to work hard. Mission trips are all about helping others, and that often involves physical labor like construction, cleaning, and other manual tasks. However, you can also expect to be rewarded for your hard work. Mission trips often involve cultural exchange, giving you the opportunity to experience Puerto Rican culture through food, music, and other activities.

You should also expect to build relationships with the people you’re helping. Mission trips are about more than just completing tasks; they’re about building connections and fostering a sense of community. You may find that the relationships you build on your mission trip are just as meaningful and rewarding as the work itself.

Finally, you should expect to be challenged. Mission trips can be emotionally and physically taxing, and you may find yourself outside of your comfort zone at times. However, the challenges you face can also be some of the most rewarding experiences of your life.

Steps to plan a Puerto Rico mission trip with Dream Center Esperanza

If you’re interested in planning a mission trip to Puerto Rico, Dream Center Esperanza is a great place to start. This non-profit organization has been working to serve the people of Puerto Rico, providing disaster relief, children and youth programs, and other outreach services.

  • Contact Dream Center Esperanza to express your interest in planning a mission trip.
  • Determine the dates and length of your mission trip.
  • Choose a project or area of focus for your mission trip, such as disaster relief, community development, or community outreach.
  • Set fundraising goals and begin fundraising for your mission trip.
  • Work with Dream Center Esperanza to plan your itinerary and logistics, such as transportation, accommodations, and meals.
  • Prepare for your trip by packing the essentials and learning about Puerto Rican culture and customs.

With the help of Dream Center Esperanza, planning a mission trip to Puerto Rico can be a smooth and rewarding experience.

Fundraising for your Puerto Rico mission trip

One of the biggest challenges of planning a mission trip is fundraising. However, with the right strategies and resources, you can successfully raise the funds needed to make your trip a reality.

One effective fundraising strategy is to reach out to your community for support. This could involve hosting a fundraising event, such as a bake sale, car wash, or benefit concert. You could also reach out to local businesses or organizations for donations or sponsorships.

Another strategy is to use online fundraising platforms like GoFundMe or Kickstarter to reach a wider audience. These platforms allow you to share your Puerto Rico mission trip goals and progress with a larger audience, and can be an effective way to raise funds from people outside of your immediate community.

Regardless of the fundraising strategy you choose, it’s important to be transparent about your goals and how the funds will be used. Make sure to thank your supporters and keep them updated on your progress throughout the fundraising process.

Packing list for your mission trip

When planning a mission trip to Puerto Rico, it’s important to pack the essentials. Here are some items you should consider bringing:

  • Work clothes and shoes for manual labor
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • Personal hygiene items, including toilet paper and hand sanitizer
  • Medications and first aid supplies
  • Water bottle and snacks
  • Lightweight rain jacket or poncho
  • Spanish-English dictionary or translation app

Keep in mind that the weather in Puerto Rico can be unpredictable, so it’s important to pack for all kinds of conditions.

Volunteer Opportunities with Dream Center Esperanza

If you’re unable to plan a full mission trip to Puerto Rico, there are still opportunities to get involved with Dream Center Esperanza. The organization offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups, including disaster relief efforts, community outreach programs, and education initiatives. Here are a few volunteer opportunities:

  • Community Cleaning

Volunteering with Dream Center Esperanza is a great way to make a difference in the lives of those in need while learning about Puerto Rican culture and customs. Whether you’re interested in short-term volunteering or a long-term commitment, there are opportunities available to suit your needs.

Mission trip itinerary

While the specifics of your Puerto Rico mission trip itinerary will depend on your goals and project focus, here’s a sample itinerary to give you an idea of what a typical mission trip with Dream Center Esperanza might look like:

Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Rico, orientation and introduction to Dream Center Esperanza Day 2-4: Work on project or area of focus, such as disaster relief or community development Day 5: Cultural exchange activities, such as visiting local landmarks, attending a traditional music or dance performance, or enjoying Puerto Rican cuisine (Free Day) Day 6-7: Continued work on project or area of focus Day 8: Departure from Puerto Rico

Of course, your itinerary can be customized to meet the specific needs and goals of your mission trip.

Impact of your Puerto Rico mission trip on the community

The impact of your mission trip on the community in Puerto Rico can be profound. By providing disaster relief, community development, or education services, you can help improve the lives of those in need and foster a sense of community and connection.

In addition to the tangible benefits of your Puerto Rico mission trip, you may also find that the experience has a profound impact on your own life. Building relationships with the people of Puerto Rico and experiencing their culture and way of life can be a transformative experience, one that stays with you long after your mission trip has ended.

Mission Trip or Pilgrimage to Puerto Rico

  • Historical Site
  • Mission Opportunity
  • Outdoor Adventure

From beaches, to forests, to mountains, to old colonial cities, Puerto Rico has it all. This beautiful island in the Caribbean Sea is unincorporated US territory that feels like a country all on its own. Known for its lively music, delicious food, and kind and generous people, Puerto Rico is truly a sparkling island jewel.

A mission trip or pilgrimage to Puerto Rico allows you to experience beauty of the island as well as the diversity and resilience of her people. Outside of the major cities, many people continue to struggle from the effects of recent storms, and poverty exists even in the bustling tourist towns. A myriad of opportunities to explore and serve await you in Puerto Rico. A Wonder Voyage in Puerto Rico gives you that rare mixture of foreign and familiar.

  • Celebrate the Eucharist on the beach.
  • Ponder the diversity of creation in the PR National Forest.
  • Experience the marvel of a bio-luminescent bay.
  • Explore the Spanish Colonial jewel that is Old San Juan.
  • Assist in continuing hurricane relief efforts.

Every Wonder Voyage itinerary (mission trip and/or pilgrimage) is personalized to the desires, direction and personality of each group. This itinerary is only a description of the kind of journey we can create for your unique team.

  • Day 1- It Wasn’t My Language ¡Bienvenidos! Welcome to Puerto Rico! Our week of service, exploration, and prayer in this island paradise centers on looking past our differences to see our similarities. From the moment we land, our language sets us apart, but it won’t be a barrier. Our goal is to love and serve our brothers and sisters who were affected by Hurricane Maria. As we drive toward the beautiful coastal region of Ponce may we prepare our hearts to encounter the truth that “underneath” we’re all the same.
  • Day 2 – 4 – It Was How I Cried In September 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico as a Category 5 storm.  The damage to the island was catastrophic.  Even today there are many places on the island that do not have electricity or a reliable source of clean water. We will spend most of our week working alongside folks who have shed many tears.  With hands and hearts we will serve in disaster recovery for some of the hardest hit parts of the island. Our goal is to bring a bit of joy and hope to those who continue to recover from the devastating effects of the storm. Our days will be a combination of hard work, cultural immersion, prayer and fun.
  • Day 5 – It Was How I Laughed Our goal this week has been to look past the surface of things, to dig deeper, to see our common humanity. Today we take a day for rest and recreation and laughter. Like a smile, laughter is a language that is universal. It is something that can draw us together; it is something that can foster peace and understanding. A ferry ride from the town of Ceiba takes us to the island of Vieques for a bit beach fun. The afternoon leads back to the big island for a brilliant adventure on a bioluminescent bay. The end of the day finds us back in the capital city of San Juan with hearts filled to overflowing with love and laughter.
  • Day 6 – It Wasn’t My Religion All too often our religion gets in the way of our faith. Today we have a chance to put religion aside and love those whose faith might look different from our own. We begin our day with a time to share communion with our Puerto Rican brethren. For our final afternoon on this lovely island, we venture into San Juan Antiguo (Old San Juan) for exploration and shopping.  As our evening draws to a close, a time of celebration and reflection begins the transition of our hearts toward home.
  • Day 7 – The Same Underneath Today we begin the journey back to our lives in North America. Instead of saying, “Goodbye,” we say, “Hasta la Vista,” which means “until we see this again.” It is our prayer that Puerto Rico and her people becomes a part of you, and that you make use of the lessons of love and hospitality that you have learned here. As we depart  from this beautiful land, may we be mindful of the road we have traveled this week – a road of compassion, understanding and love – a road that reminds us underneath we are all the same.

What travelers are saying ....

This was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on!! I can definitely say it was life-changing.

I loved that JE planned most of the meals to focus on the local cuisine. It was a great experience!

I love this organization! It makes planning so easy and we have never been disappointed.

Thank you for your faithfulness in serving Jesus through this wonderful ministry of student travel. I highly recommend JE!

JE is Christ-centered and they understand the importance of training students to have an eternal perspective.

The trained guides of JE have led with such excellence that our students have been encouraged to share Christ.

I’ve traveled with JE for the last nine years and I would not imagine traveling with any other company.

JE’s depth of knowledge, logistics, and well-trained guides are why I don’t take trips with any other company.

**Note: If you do not see availability for the capacities you are looking for, please contact us at  [email protected]  to discuss any possible accommodations.

Puerto Rico is a beautiful island, but it is also an island in need—physically, economically, and spiritually. Many in Puerto Rico are experiencing a crisis of hopelessness. An economic crisis from 2015, back-to-back categories 4 & 5 hurricanes in 2017, earthquakes in 2019-2020, category 1 hurricane in 2022, and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic have all taken their toll on the island’s residents.

Send Relief began responding to the needs in Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. Thousands of volunteers were mobilized in the aftermath of the storms to rebuild damaged homes, distribute meals, and share the hope of Christ through service.

Send Relief has been able to rebuild over 300 homes, clean up communities, provide hundreds of backpacks (whether it’s for back-to-school or emergency kits), and empower the local churches to share the gospel with those around them.

What will you do?

Mission teams will mainly engage in light construction to help repair and rebuild homes and churches. Members of mission teams may participate in community outreach through prayer walking, meal distributions, etc.

Next steps:

  • Register yourself and your group
  • Pay deposit to confirm your reservation
  • Confirm team roster and book flights
  • Submit flight information to Send Relief

Trip Overview

Answer God's call to be part of a multifaceted mission in Mexico that includes building a church (possibly multiple), participating in dental/medical clinics, and preaching or assisting in evangelistic meetings or children's VBS. God has an incredible opportunity for you to share Jesus in a variety of ways, and there is something for everyone who goes to contribute.

We will work with the local Conference, pastors, and members to bring hope and healing to this area. The Conference has purchased land in select villages to plant new congregations. We will do medical, evangelism, and church construction in these areas.

The construction and medical clinics will take place in the morning. Trip members may choose one or the other to participate. The evangelism meetings and VBS will take place in the evening. All participants will be assigned to a church site in some capacity and serve each evening in their role.

This trip will be a life-changing experience as you witness God work miracles in you and the lives of those you reach! You will return home energized, excited about mission in your local church and community, and praying for your next trip! You will make new friends for eternity and never be the same again!

mission trip puerto rico

This remote Puerto Rico island is an idyllic Caribbean getaway – pristine beaches, lush rainforest and artisan rum

T wo hours after sundown we pushed our glass-bottomed kayaks out onto Mosquito Bay, a small inlet on the south coast of Puerto Rico ’s remote island of Vieques, the surrounding mangrove trees silhouetted against the dark blue sky.

It was deathly silent as we paddled forward, following the voice of our guide and doing our best to keep our strokes in time as we headed for the centre of the bay. A sudden shriek pierced the silence from a neighbouring kayak. “It’s beneath you! Look down!”

The black water began to change, sparkling a glittering blue. A thick stream of diamonds whooshed under the boat as the current from the Caribbean Sea carried us forward.

We’d found the “magic” of Mosquito Bay’s bioluminescence. I dipped my hand in the warm water and the diamonds trickled down my arm like something from a trippy dreamscape. This type of plankton that glows as a defence mechanism when disturbed makes Vieques home to one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world – and I’m fortunate that I’m being shown it by the people who know it best: the island’s locals.

It’s one of several locally led experiences that show tourists a new way to explore the archipelago, away from Puerto Rico’s busy capital San Juan and the city’s popular historic old quarter, which while beautiful, contains only a taste of what this country has to offer.

Vieques lies about eight miles off the mainland and is reachable via ferry or charter flight, with the latter lasting only 10 minutes and giving you views of lush green treetops and clear turquoise waters as you glide overhead.

It was baking hot by the time we touched down. In dire need of coffee, I was taken straight to Rising Roost, which as the name suggests, is the right place for a pick-me-up. Its owners Luz Yanira and Jose are from Puerto Rico’s central mountain region and took over the cafe in 2020. They serve up some of the best brew on the island and were poised at the espresso machine when we arrived. Hallelujah.

“Make sure you try some mavi ,” said Luz Yanira. “It’s what all the locals drink here, we love it. It’s a slightly sweet, fermented juice made from bark.” I ordered a glass and sipped cautiously. It was sweet and refreshing, with that subtle fermented funk – a lot like the kombucha I’m used to back home.

The north of the island is known for its traditional food, so in addition to having American classics on the menu, Rising Roost serves up drinks such as mavi as well as Puerto Rican dishes like el bote veggie , which is a local bread called sobao that’s stuffed with scrambled eggs and vegetables, and topped with cheese.

Fuelled for the morning, we were given a brief history lesson by local resident Angie, who was born and raised on Vieques and runs a range of tours . She explained that, like in other parts of Puerto Rico, you can easily spot traces of the 400 years the country spent under Spanish colonial rule. This includes Fortín Conde de Mirasol, the last Spanish fort built in the Americas (about a three-minute drive away from Rising Roost), and, more unusually, hundreds of free-roaming horses that still share the land with the island’s residents.

“Look now, you can see the baby with her mama,” Angie pointed to them in a clearing by the side of the road. The story goes they were introduced to the island by Spanish conquistadors and have since adapted to the local environment. “They’re very friendly,” Angie added.

Vieques has 15 beaches dotted around its 21-mile circumference, each with its own unique draw or requiring a little effort to reach (we’re talking bumpy car rides and woodland walks), but for those who persevere they can be idyllic pockets of tranquillity.

La Chiva Beach is the island’s most popular and accessible as you can drive right to the shore. Horses were quietly grazing in the shade when we pulled up and headed out for a swim in the clear turquoise waters.

Our second beach is known locally as Playa Negra due to its volcanic black sand. It is reached on foot down a path covered by a canopy of palm trees, where small crabs pop in and out the holes along its sandy verges.

Puerto Rico wears the dual hat of being a US territory and a Caribbean island . It’s also the self-proclaimed “ rum capital in the world”. So, of course, a visit here would be remiss without a tasting. On to our next stop.

We’re shown big vats of honey-coloured rum bubbling away in silver brewing tanks by Roberto, a member of the small four-person team working at Crab Island Rum, the island’s first artisan distillery, which opened in 2019.

“We [the team] are all from Vieques,” Roberto said. “I used to be a musician on the main island but after Hurricane Maria I came back to help, because everything was devastated and everyone was trying to help each other, of course.” He’s not the only person I spoke to who had returned to the island to help after Hurricane Maria reaped devastation in 2017. A category 5 hurricane, 2,975 of the 3,059 deaths were in Puerto Rico alone. It’s clear the region’s recovery was very much a shared one; its island communities rebuilt by those who call Puerto Rico home.

“Then I started here in 2021, trying a bit of everything,” Roberto added, referring to the different roles across the distillery from manning the gift shop and bar work (at their onsite bar), to learning the ropes as a rum producer. “We want to try and get people here who want to work and learn something different. We’re so small right now, but little by little, every year we’re trying to make something different to get a bit bigger.”

Our day ended at El Quenepo, an open-air restaurant run by husband-and-wife team Scott (chef) and Kate (host), who also run an adjoining hotel Puertas at El Quenepo, which gets its name from the beautifully restored doors fronting each of the rooms, taken from wood from the island.

“This building is kind of an amalgamation of Vieques’s history with a lot of nods to Puerto Rico in general but particularly Vieques because we’re a super independent community,” Kate explained as plates of crispy pakora prawns and spicy harissa arrived at the table, alongside a platter of local rabbit with spinach ravioli.

“We’re really an extended family here on Vieques. The island is all mom-and-pop businesses, we’re all small. So, you are supporting the person you’re seeing, you’re supporting each and every one of these people, it’s never a corporation owned by someone else.”

We stayed at El Blok, a hotel about a five-minute walk from El Quenepo down the main strip. Like other parts of Vieques, the street is lit up red at night so as not to disorientate the thriving leatherback turtle population on the island that you have a high chance of seeing when snorkelling – which we do the following morning.

“The seabed is covered with seagrass, which the turtles feed off when we’re out of jellyfish season,” said Sarah Elise, founder of eco-tourism group Crysal Clear , which among their tours run snorkelling sessions to catch a glimpse of the turtles and other marine life.

Crysal Clear was heavily involved in a coral reef protection initiative when a Caribbean-wide bleaching event threatened the reef with disease. In addition to their tours, they’re keen to educate about marine protection and weave this knowledge into their sessions.

We snorkelled out from the beachfront (no boats required) and within minutes saw a huge leatherback turtle swimming below. Three more soon appeared, grazing on the sea floor. I peacefully floated above them, watching a little more of the island’s magic unfurl beneath me.

Where to stay

El Blok is centrally located along Vieques’s main promenade, Esperanza’s El Malecon, making it a great place from which to explore the island. Its design has taken inspiration from the surrounding coral reefs, with patterned exteriors that allow in natural light and fresh air, at the same time as giving guests plenty of privacy across all of the hotel’s 30 rooms.

Puertas at El Quenepo

This two-story intimate guesthouse , located along Esperanza beach, has been lovingly restored by the restaurateurs behind El Quenepo (which resides below). One of the main features of the property is large wooden stable doors (or puertas ), from which it gets its name. The rooms all come with four-poster beds and antique furniture, while the bespoke interiors make this a unique stay. Prices start from around $165 (£130) a night.

Condado Ocean Club

If you want to stay in San Juan for a night or two before or after heading out to Vieques, the Condado Ocean Club is a good option. This all-adult boutique hotel is set on San Juan’s oceanfront with 96 of its rooms featuring water views. The rooms are beautifully chic, with floor-to-ceiling windows and clean white finishes. Its poolside parties are a guest mainstay, with a bar, music and plenty of loungers to soak up the rays.

How to get there

Flights from the UK to San Juan via New York JFK start at £605 return with JetBlue .

You can get a flight from Ceiba (to the east of the island) to Vieques. Prices start at around £80 return. Visitors can also get a ferry to Vieques from Ceiba, which takes about 35-40 minutes and costs $4 (£3) for a return ticket.

Accommodations

In September  2017 Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit Puerto Rico. Residents on the island endured two Category 5 hurricanes in two weeks. When it made landfall, Hurricane Maria carried sustained winds well over 150 mph. It was the island’s worst hurricane disaster on record. Puerto Rico’s “super blackout” is the longest and largest major power outage in modern U.S. history. Without electricity, there is no reliable source of clean water. School is out, indefinitely. Health care is fraught. Small businesses are faltering. The tasks of daily life are both exhausting and dangerous.

Mission Discovery teams are needed to help restore hope. We will be partnering with local churches and other NGO’s to reach affected areas and assist as needed. While many organizations are ready to move towards recovery and restoration, it will be a slow and lengthy process. We will serve the people of Puerto Rico with the help and leading of our partners.

Caribbean Lutherans

The History of the Church in Puerto Rico

Denominational histories are, by their very nature, somewhat programmatic. Historians start by looking at the recorded history of the mission. Missionaries often create the most records because the nature of their work necessitates reporting progress back to their funding sources. Yet Idalia Negrón, currently the bishop of the Caribbean Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, reports in her foreword to the book that when she and Rodríguez visited the Historical Archive of Puerto Rico to research how the Lutheran mission began there, they could find no information. Rodríguez’s book is a very real witness to persistence in recovering the history of the church he loves.

mission trip puerto rico

Lutheranism in Puerto Rico grew slowly but steadily throughout the first half of the 20th century. Rodríguez highlights how, for the first several decades, annual growth averaged in the teens, but such numbers added up over time. By the 40th anniversary of the Lutheran mission, there were “a total of thirteen organized congregations, with 1,040 confirmed and 3,286 baptized members. The eighteen Sunday schools reported 101 teachers and 2,306 pupils, there were ten Luther Leagues with a membership of 362, nine Women’s Missionary societies with 275 members, and five Brotherhoods with a membership of 140.” In 1940, the mission published its first hymnal, Manual de Culto Cristiano .

Still, as a Lutheran pastor, I’ve long witnessed the significant impact the Caribbean Synod (which encompasses Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands) has had on my denomination. Caribbean Lutherans helps me understand what I already sensed intuitively. Not quite an ethnic-specific synod comparable to those the ELCA incorporated in the late 20th century (such as the Slovak Zion Synod), and also quite different from the many continental US-based synods, the Caribbean Synod continually finds creative ways to invite American Lutherans to know and see themselves differently.

GOES-U satellite launch workshop inspires educators around the United States and Puerto Rico

NOAA’s GOES-U satellite is scheduled for launch in late June as the fourth and final satellite in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites GOES-R Series. Once it reaches geostationary orbit, GOES-U will be renamed GOES-19 and replace GOES-16.

mission trip puerto rico

Margaret Mooney, Education and Public Outreach Director at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, will be attending the launch, along with over 20 teachers from 16 states and Puerto Rico, as part of the GOES-R Education Proving Ground. Mooney, who created the GOES teacher workshops said, “I had an idea for an education proving ground so that teachers would be able to work with and understand all the new satellite data coming in.”

The first workshop occurred in 2016, when 23 educators from around the US traveled to Cape Canaveral, Florida to see the launch of GOES-16 and learn about engaging students in STEM fields.

She says she is “quite happy” with how GOES-R Education Proving Ground has evolved since its inception in 2013, “The teachers are very excited to go to the Kennedy Space Center. It’s a really cool event.”

Meet the GOES-U Educators!

Nicole burt, director of education at wings of eagles discovery center and alternative education teacher on the greater southern tier boces campus in upstate new york.

“ The ability to integrate technology into the curriculum gives the content a new and fresh feeling along with keeping students engaged in what is happening in the world around them. In the museum we use our science on a sphere to educate children and adults on the ever-changing world around them. I love sharing my experience with my students. “I am so excited to be able to increase knowledge of how the satellite data from equipment like the GOES get used in weather and environmental sciences, and share this new information with my classroom students, my museum students, and the adults that frequent the discovery center. The ability to integrate technology into the curriculum gives the content a new and fresh feeling along with keeping students engaged in what is happening in the world around them. In the museum we use our science on a sphere to educate children and adults on the ever-changing world around them including topics on climate change, environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and geography. This workshop will help to guide our program to a deeper understanding of where the data came from.

I love sharing my experience with my students. I work with a diverse population that are at risk of not achieving their high school diploma. I try to show them and talk to them about all of my adventures. I want them to understand that our world is bigger than the neighborhood they live in. I want them to start to strive to be more understanding of different places and cultures. I want them to want to experience the world around them and to value the beauty of the world we live in.”

Darlene Kehn, Averill Park High School in Averill Park, New York

“ I teach elementary aged students about observing and navigating the night sky, planets, and stars, and it’s a blast! One of the things about NASA that is so impressive to me is when people’s life work comes to fruition.  My students and I have been following the OSIRIS-REx, Europa Clipper, and Artemis missions (to name a few) this past school year. I want to inspire my students to appreciate the connections between space and weather, and the engineering processes that goes into these missions .”

“I teach elementary aged students about observing and navigating the night sky, planets, and stars, and it’s a blast! I hope that this workshop will expand my knowledge of the connections between the atmosphere and space.  I also think it will be amazing to be in attendance to see the launch first hand and to share this experience with my students and coworkers.  I look forward to learning more about the satellite’s trip to space.

I have been following the GOES-R satellites ever since I was a meteorology major in college. The improvements in remote sensing have been so fun to watch and I love utilizing the satellite imagery in my classroom.  My students and I check the regional and contiguous U.S. visible satellite daily during the weather unit and use it to identify fronts and how weather systems move.  We also love observing and tracking tropical systems during hurricane season – the visual resolution is so impressive and shows how powerful these storms are.  One of the things about NASA that is so impressive to me is when people’s life work comes to fruition. I hope that after this workshop, I will inspire my students to appreciate the connections between space, weather, and the engineering and design process that goes into these missions.”

Elizabeth Torres-Rodríguez, Escuela José Julián Acosta in San Juan, Puerto Rico

“ I live in Puerto Rico and the importance of this satellite is paramount to monitor the atmospheric systems that impact our tropical area. My students have used data from it to conduct tropical meteorological research. “

“ I hope to be able to create more authentic activities that allow students to explore real science, not just the ‘answers in the back of the book’ science. “

“I’ve always been a space buff. In 2009 I went to Space Camp for Educators on a Honeywell scholarship and have incorporated activities I learned there ever since. I hope to be able to create more authentic activities that allow students to explore real science, not just the ‘answers in the back of the book’ science. I have watched sounding rockets from Wallops via the internet and then stepped on my front lawn in New Jersey to see them climbing into the sky–to watch one up close and personal is honestly going to be life changing. Touring the Kennedy Space Center is a close second!”

Miranda Fritchman, Franklin County High School in Carnesville, Georgia

“ I hope to introduce my students to both the older satellites in the series as well as this more recent version to help them see how the technology is evolving over time, as well as how satellite data can be used to make important observations and decisions regarding the Earth’s complex systems. “

mission trip puerto rico

“I was motivated to attend the launch and workshop due to my work as both a Physics teacher and as a Biology teacher to help bolster my current lessons that focus on our Ecology unit in Biology. From a Physics stand point, attending the launch itself will help me provide my students with examples of real world application of Physics. Students will be tasked with considering the Physics involved with both launching the satellite into orbit as well as the Physics considerations needed for both the satellite to maintain its position in orbit and also to collect the data required from it.

I am always eager to incorporate real time data into my lessons to help students understand how the environment and world around them may be changing over time and what impacts our own activities may be having on our planet. I am honored to have this chance to gain more information on this latest iteration of the GOES series. I hope to introduce my students to both the older satellites in the series as well as this more recent version to help them see how the technology is evolving over time, as well as how satellite data can be used to make important observations and decisions regarding the Earth’s complex systems.”

Kathryn Jeakle, Shorecrest Preparatory Middle School in St. Petersburg, Florida

“ Students really struggle with the idea that we can get data from something that is revolving around Earth. I am hopeful that I will be able to better present to them what satellites are and how they work to collect data we can see on Earth. Watching a launch is a once in a lifetime opportunity. “

“I am currently teaching 8th grade Marine Science and we talk a lot about satellites and how they collect weather data. Students really struggle with the idea that we can get data from something that is revolving around Earth. I am hopeful that I will be able to better present to them what satellites are and how they work to collect data we can see on Earth.  The added possibility of watching a launch is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am excited to learn about the GOES-U satellite, what tools it has on it as well as how it works from space to send of data.

I am also excited to see the launch. Living in Florida I have seen the trails in the sky after launches but have never been up front and in person for one.  I am also really excited I was able to invite 2 people.  My brother and dad will hopefully view it with me which will be a special moment for us.  My dad follows most of the launches online and has traveled to see them but never from one of the viewing areas.”

“ Our space unit is my students’ favorite during the year and we always end with learning about rockets and using the engineering design process to build stomp rockets. I find that the more excited I am about a topic, then the students are also more excited. “

“I am very excited to attend the launch and workshop this year! Our space unit is my students’ favorite during the year and we always end with learning about rockets and using the engineering design process to build stomp rockets.  I have wanted to ramp up the lessons about rockets, and this workshop should help me to develop my understanding and background knowledge. I find that the more excited I am about a topic, then the students are also more excited.  If I have personal stories and pictures that I can share with the students, they are more likely to ask questions and see the event as something real and achievable.”

Mark Krippner, Sartell High School in Sartell, Minnesota

“ Thinking about the mission of GOES-U, my classes often touch on a lot of these various meteorological and environmental aspects that GOES-U is going to monitor.  Most often my students take pride in keeping up with the real time happenings in earth science. I don’t turn all of my students into geologists and meteorologists, but I leave my students with an idea that there are careers out there for those with a passion .”

“Thinking about the mission of GOES-U, my classes often touch on a lot of these various meteorological and environmental aspects that GOES-U is going to monitor.  Most often my students take pride in keeping up with the real time happenings in earth science.

My goal for this conference is always twofold.  I am a lifelong learner and am always trying to better myself.  In turn, I bring this passion for the earth sciences back into my classroom where students get to see this crazy guy and how much he loves to share these stories and experiences with them.  I don’t turn all of my students into geologists and meteorologists, but I leave my students with an idea that there are careers out there for those with a passion.  I also think it is a bit motivating to have my students realize that their teacher has some experience with the real science that happens out in the real world versus their perceived lesser high school science.

I am just looking forward to the whole experience.  I am a huge weather nerd and so many things are coming together in this experience.  I am excited to share it with future generations.  Also, I have two little scientists (my boys) that are coming with me to the launch.  This will be something they remember forever.”

Luke Boughfman, JP Elder Middle School in Ft. Worth, Texas

“ One of the biggest questions I get from students is “when I’m ever going to use this?” When you can show them real world examples it helps tremendously. “

“Anytime you can learn and make yourself better it will benefit you in life. I will be able to bring what I learn to help make more engaging lessons which helps students learn. This event will not only inspire my own children, who will be watching the launch with me, but I’ll also be able to inspire my students. We are very excited to see the launch!

One of the biggest questions I get from students is “when I’m ever going to use this?” When you can show them real world examples it helps tremendously. This year after the eclipse we used goes satellite image to show the eclipse going over Texas. This made a great connection with the kids to help understand how eclipses work. Getting to see the shadow of the moon helped them understand what was happening. Before I showed this many students still didn’t understand that the moon had blocked the sun’s light. After showing the satellite information they all understood what had happened.

Learning more real world activities to help make me a better teacher will be great. The thing I’m most excited is the people you meet end up helping learn at the workshop, and you continue to learn through them over the years (Also looking forward to telling students got to learn at NASA over the summer).”

Jessica Nicks, Beacon Hill Middle School in Decatur, Georgia

“ I am interested in focusing on using the GOES-U satellite data in my resource class for students to develop their own research project. I love learning new things, so showing them an opportunity I took and how enthusiastic I am about what I have learned, models to them what being a lifelong learner is about. “

“Honestly, space and astronomy have always been a topic I feel least comfortable teaching. A lot of my professional development and endorsements have focused on life science and sustainability. I want to learn more, so I can teach it better. I want to be around people who are excited and interested in meteorology and space so I get excited and that enthusiasm transfers to my classroom and students. I had students come to me and ask me to sponsor a Meteorology Club at school about 3 years ago. I did it begrudgingly because they couldn’t find anyone else and I liked the kids.

Well, I ended up loving learning about meteorology and space along with them. I am interested in focusing on using the GOES-U satellite data in my resource class for students to develop their own research project. Every time I go to a conference with educators and specialists in a particular topic, I end up coming away excited and ready to teach my students what I learned. I love learning new things and I try to encourage this in my classroom. So showing them an opportunity I took and how enthusiastic I am about what I learned, models to them what being a lifelong learner is about.”
