Single, Love Travel, Over 40?

Age-matched travel across six travel styles

Holidays for Singles 40 & Above

Short a travel buddy and don’t want to travel alone.

Maybe you were a backpacker in your twenties, or even pushing it out to your 30's. Or perhaps you've passed the milestone of 40 with travel memories yet to create.

Where-ever you find yourself, now it's your chance to travel solo for the first time.

IS SOMETHING HOLDING YOU BACK from your Dream Holiday?

The idea of (now) travelling alone isn’t your idea of a fun holiday, and you’re left wondering about the options for solo travellers over 40.

Travelling solo in your twenties or thirtes, isn’t the same daunting prospect compared to being over forty – backpacking is the norm or there’s the option to join touring companies like Contiki or Top Deck. But Contiki and Top Deck have a cut off age, and you’re no longer in their sights. How easy is it in your twenties?  – no end of options for finding travel buddies and meet other solo travellers along the way. In your 20’s plenty of travellers are still single – there’s lots of other ‘twenty somethings’ doing the same.

DWINDLING OPTIONS?

Friends not up for the same travel plans you have in mind, or the same passion? Or your circle of single friends has shrunk and you’re wondering your options for travel without a travel buddy?

GETTING STARTED

Wherever you are at with your travel plans, you definitely made some inroads as you got this far and you found us – Wow, a travel company for solo travellers fo over 40 year olds , perhaps is what you’re thinking.

We’ll, you’re right – you fit right in! Because, we only look after solo travellers.

Nice change to the other mainstream packages out there – ads loaded with images of the perfect couple touring Europe, or soaking up romantic moments at a tropical resort, and so on and so on…. tragically failing to show single travellers in the picture.

Find Your Travel Style

Not all solo travellers are the same, and that’s why we’ve created 6 travel styles to pick from

  • 'Discovery' – leisure touring
  • 'On The Go' - walking and adventure tours
  • 'Marine' – ocean and river cruising
  • 'Combo' - mixing it up with tour & cruise combination packages
  • 'Relax' - chill out resort package
  • 'Essentials' - mindful on the budget, without scrimping on value for money

Age Matched Groups

Most of our tours are created for single-solo travellers 40 years and over , with a mix of age groups offered;  40 years & over, 45 years & over, 50 years & over , 40 to 59 years, and there’s others.   And our Cruise Circle for Solos  cruise groups are best suited to cruise fans 40 years and over. Our age-matched groups have a proven track record, and you can read the countless testimonials from your fellow solo traveller.

Best Trips for 40-Somethings

Your 40s are a great time of your life to travel, but they’re an even better time to travel with Backroads. We take care of the logistics so that in your busy life, you can be sure that every precious day you spend on vacation will count to the fullest. Besides, group travel is a built-in way to meet new friends. You may have outgrown those hostel dorms long ago, but you’ll never outgrow the need to share experiences with a group of peers. Ready to give us a try, but don’t know where to start? Or maybe you’re just looking for inspiration for your next trip of a lifetime? Here are ten of our favorite destinations – each one a perfect fit for travelers in their 40s.

1. Alaska's Kenai Multi-Adventure Tour

Man with walking sticks climbing up grassy hill

Picture yourself: Arriving at the top of a steep hike up green heath-covered slopes only to suddenly behold the Harding Icefield, a plain of glacial ice stretching 700 square miles from one mountain range to the next.

Why Backroads: Alaska is big. Very, very big. You could do it solo, but why not let us connect the dots between highlights, from a sea-level ski town near Anchorage to the 6,000-foot mountains of the Kenai Peninsula? Besides, we know the best places to cycle, hike and kayak along the way. If you were to plan this trip yourself, you’d have thousands and thousands of miles of beautiful backcountry to choose from. With us , it’s just miles and miles to enjoy.

Why now: Even if you’re a consummate traveler, the Last Frontier is so far from the rest of the United States that you might not have knocked it off your bucket list in your thirties. And that’s okay. But we’re giving you a reminder poke to make sure you get here while in your most active years. Alaska’s views make jaws drop at any age, but the demanding trails of this big landscape bring big rewards.

2. Croatia Multi-Adventure Tour

5

Picture yourself: Taking to the streets of Hvar, the “Ibiza of the East,” clad in a wide-brimmed hat and potentially something made out of linen like you just walked out of a Wes Anderson movie.

Why Backroads: We’ve been in on the secret of Croatia since tourism was scarcely a glint in the post-war nation’s eye. As such, our laundry list of Croatian secrets is endless. Island-hopping on a 100-plus-year-old boat, dining in a country garden and biking through vertical fields of lavender are just the beginning.

Why now: Croatia has a vibrant young energy. And social life here doesn’t end when you graduate college. There’s room for people at all stages of adulthood at the beach, where locals high-dive from the sea cliffs, or at the kitchen table, where homemade lemon grappa is passed around after a spectacular meal. If you feel young, Croatia’s infectious energy will suck you in and prove you right.

3. Argentina's Patagonia Walking & Hiking Tour

5

Picture yourself: Watching the evening fall from the porch of our frontier lodgings at Estancia Cristina (a guest favorite), where it’ll soon be lights out (as in, the electricity will be turned off for the night!). After the boat ride past the groaning glaciers of Lake Argentino that brought us here, you watch the sun alight on ice-rimmed mountaintops and suddenly feel tiny compared to the vastness of nature.

Why Backroads: Patagonia demands a high level of logistics and guide support with its massive distances and remote trails. It also offers up a world-class collection of not-so-rustic comforts, such as Argentina’s truly gourmet food and wine. We’re experts at weaving together both.

Why now: The dynamism of Patagonia’s favorite activities – horseback riding with gauchos, sharing a steaming gourd full of yerba maté, uncorking a stellar local red around the roaring fire – make this the perfect trip on which to enjoy the company of traveling companions… or soon-to-be new friends.

4. Iceland's Glaciers & Coast Multi-Adventure Tour

Man and woman looking down a hill to a river

Picture yourself: Soaking in geothermal waters at our hotel’s outdoor hot pool after a bracing day in the elements, breathing in steam while you watch evening clouds gather over the moody Icelandic moors.

Why Backroads: In Iceland’s saturated tourism market, we go beneath the volcanic crust. Some of our signature Backroads activities are playful cultural experiences – how about riding a vintage sheep cart across the black-sand marshes? Others take us to wild locations way off the beaten path, such as the isolated islet of Heimaey.

Why now: We know your 40s are busy, which is why it’ll be a pleasant surprise how easy it is to fly to Iceland from the United States. Besides, Iceland is trending. With recent blockbusters shot here such as the Game of Thrones series and several Marvel movies, there’s an excitement to getting up close with landscapes that, though otherworldly, may also seem strangely familiar.

5. Peru Walking & Hiking Tour

5

Picture yourself: Hiking a jungle trail through the pass of the Sun Gate and suddenly beholding the citadel of Machu Picchu surrounded by clouds and precipices far below you.

Why Backroads : Our connections in Peru are unparalleled. Be invited into a remote Inca weaving village, sit down for lunch at the home of farm-to-table pioneers and take every step accompanied by our local guide – a legal requirement to visit certain sites such as the Inca Trail, but in our case, after many years working together, just another part of the Backroads family. Bonus? It’s one less thing you’d need to try to organize on your own.

Why now: Peru is a blast of zany culture shock. You’ll be approached by friendly but insistent vendors. You will have to haggle. And from Cusco’s bohemian bars to Sacred Valley microbreweries, there’s a hopping backpacker scene. At this age, your social battery is still fully charged... or at least fully rechargeable!

6. Tuscany by the Sea Bike Tour

tuscany

Picture yourself: Sitting beneath striped awnings on a Mediterranean village promenade, in your hand a crisp glass of white wine vinted in vineyards through which you pedaled earlier today, your cycling muscles embraced by a warm salty breeze. Ahh, il dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing.

Why Backroads: With a 45-year history leading trips in the area and a wealth of Italian employees, we’re Tuscany experts. This is one of the world’s most iconic cycling destinations, and we can show you why. Plus, we’re one of the few outfitters to pair Tuscany’s greatest hits with the unspoiled coast of the Maremma region.

Why now: If you’ve got the travel bug, you may have visited Italy in your 20s or 30s, snapping pics by the Trevi Fountain and hitting a beach day on the Venetian Lido. We invite you to dive deeper. Your youthful backpacking years were for knocking Italy off your bucket list; these years are for savoring the flavor notes of its rural heart.

7. Costa Rica Highlands to Coast Multi-Adventure Tour

78

Picture yourself: Sitting on the edge of a loaded river raft, paddle in hand, howling with adrenaline and laughter as you and a boatful of new friends zoom down a chute of white water only to land with a satisfying splash!

Why Backroads: Costa Rica is an embarrassment of natural riches. We can help you choose how to spend the ideal six days. Hint: the docket includes hot springs, coffee plantations, tortilla- and mojito-making classes and, of course, beach time.

Why now: Because you deserve a vacation that engrosses you completely. One that lights you up with a thrill a minute, but leaves you feeling completely recharged. You’d be surprised just how relaxing a day of adventures can be when they take place in the silky air of the tropics and end on the teakwood deck of a languid eco-resort.

8. Portugal's Algarve & Alentejo Bike Tour

658

Picture yourself: In the saddle of a bike, surrounded by dusky-green olive and cork trees. The road slips between the dazzling white-and-blue houses of a tiny village; at the dusty crossroads you hop off your bike and duck into the bead-curtained door of a café for a quick cimbalinho (espresso).

Why Backroads: We’ll be your guide to Portugal’s up-and-coming luxury scene, from gourmet restaurant projects to sumptuous resorts retrofitted into ancient buildings. We also offer an ideal Portuguese combo : explore the backwaters of the uber-authentic Alentejo wine region, then hit the discovered (but absolutely worthwhile!) beach paradise of the Algarve.

Why now: This small and quirky Atlantic nation, practically its own sub-region of Europe, is having a moment. Artsy and gourmet small businesses are thriving and the proud Portuguese are charmingly unflappable amid all the attention.

9. New Zealand South Island Walking & Hiking Tour

nz

Picture yourself: Stepping onto the creaking wood of a swinging bridge across the foaming white gorge of the Matukituki River. On either side, the steep slope is a shaggy canopy of southern beech trees strung with moss and pulsing with green shadows. Up ahead, the stony shoulders of the Southern Alps loom.

Why Backroads: We’ve created a balanced confection that makes the most of this hiker’s paradise, which you likely flew a long way to reach. Connect the towns of Wanaka and Queenstown, the Franz Josef and Rob Roy Glaciers, rain forest, beaches, wine country and an optional excursion to Milford Sound.

Why now: You were probably still a teen or in college when the Lord of the Rings movies came out. If those flabbergasting landscapes are still indelibly stamped in your mind, we promise you: the reality is even better. What’s Backroadses , my precious?

10. California Wine Country Bike Tour

567

Picture yourself: Biking on Sonoma County’s Bohemian Highway in the mossy shade of towering redwood trees, when suddenly the forest opens up to a bright patchwork of vineyards. The Backroads leaders signal you to turn off the road through old oak gates, where an ivy-covered building waits on a hill. Tasting, anyone?

Why Backroads: We’re based in Berkeley, so this is our backyard. There are many ways to see this world-famous region; we’re here to show you why cycling is the best one. Along the way we’ll give you a taste of the mighty rivers, oak woodlands, sea cliffs, blossoming orchards and yes, redwoods – which have us convinced that the West Coast is the best coast.

Why now: Your 40s are a time to go from appreciating wine to developing a taste for it. Going to the mecca of the craft is a fascinating master class. And if you haven’t done Napa and Sonoma yet, you’ll soon see that it’s a cliché for a reason. Even with all the money and hype, the friendly rural undertones of this region make a visit here just a whole lot of fun.

UB40 is ALWAYS a treat for the senses live. Their sound is larger than life. How could it be anything less? With Veteran member Robin Campbell on rhythm and lead guitar who also sings with the deeper, melodic voice. Duncan Campbell giving the lead vocals all he's got, throw in some subtle smiles and a whole lot of sophisticated charm as well. Earl Falconer on bass, making a center stage appearance for a few songs of his own, including, Bulldozer, a fantastic new one from the current album "For The Many". Martin Meredith on saxophone playing straight to your soul, Lawrence Perry dazzling on trumpet, and humbly standing in for The one and only Brian Travers was Ian who really carried the music quite well and is an absolute gentleman. Norman Hassan gives you voice, percussion, character and some very fancy dance moves! Tony Mullings on keyboards lays down a very complicated array of sounds that infiltrate the music and make it what it is, he adds so much to the richness of their brand of Reggae. Jimmy Brown sets the tempo on the drums and gives this fine group of genuine, talented, musicians a wild ride to lay down all of their musical contributions to and float you away on rythm, melody, beat, love songs, politics, thought provoking, smile producing MUSIC! This is a band that if you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see live, and you miss it, you missed more than you will ever realize. They are so good to their true and loyal fans, both on stage and off. There's obvious reason why this is 40th anniversary tour, 40 years of material, all authentic (even the covers!) all genuine, all solid, and inspirational. UB40 is the finest entertainment I've ever had the privilege to experience. Go. See. Them.

Toto Announce ’40 Tours Around the Sun’ Live Album and DVD

Toto have announced a new live album and concert film. Titled 40 Tours Around the Sun , the set captures the classic rockers performing in front of more than 18,000 fans.

The concert was recorded on March 17, 2018, during the band’s stop at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. The performance featured many of the band’s best-known tracks -- including “Rosanna,” “Hold the Line” and the omnipresent “Africa” -- along with deeper album cuts from throughout its career.

You can see a trailer below.

Among the bonus material, 40 Tours Around the Sun also promises a “storytellers segment in which the band’s four key figures, David Paich, Steve Lukather , Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams, plunder their back catalog, describe the background behind their first demo and reveal the genesis of Michael Jackson ’s ‘Human Nature.’” The latter track, made famous by the King of Pop, was penned by Porcaro.

40 Tours Around the Sun arrives on Sept. 13 on digital formats, with two-CD and three-LP sets releasing a week later. Those wanting the DVD or Blu-Ray will have to wait until Nov. 15. You can see the track listing for the album below.

The release is just the latest event in Toto’s modern renaissance. The band’s popularity has surged in recent years thanks to new fans discovering their body of work. Much of this can be attributed to Weezer ’s cover of “Africa,” which became one of the biggest songs of 2018.

Earlier this year, Toto announced the final portion of their two-year 40 Trips Around the Sun tour. The trek began in 2017 and celebrates the band’s 40th anniversary.

What people love about USA Tours

The 7-day Southwest Highlights tour was amazing! Alex and Amber were terrific guides that helped to give us options to make the most of our time at each tour stop. They also took care of setting up camp most days and prepared great meals throughout the trip. The trip was well organized, and we stopped often during the drive. I recommend this tour to people who want an active vacation, checking a number of National Parks off their list, but don't want to do all of the research needed to make it happen.
Most Amazing Family Vacation Ever! The 7-day private tour of the Southwest National Parks (hotel version) Hard to put into words but this was the perfect way for our family to experience the dramatic sites and cultural experiences of the southwest National Parks! We had the most amazing tour guide (Thanks Marie!) and the agenda was the right balance of keeping us engaged while covering so much ground. Each National Park had its own unique and wonderful qualities and this 7-day tour gave us just enough time to soak up the natural beauty. Also, there are hikes and tours for all ages (we let the boys take on the more difficult hikes while Mom and Dad took the more accessible routes. The pick up and drop off in Las Vegas was very convenient and allowed us just enough time to enjoy a few nights in Las Vegas. Would HIGHLY recommend!
Everything was great organized, our CEO Megan was so kind and well prepared.

Bindlestiff Tours

"Fabulous! I just returned from Bindlestiff's Grand Canyon & more 3 day tour. It was Fabulous! It provided a well-planned itinerary of fascinating places (Zion National Park, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon (optional & a must!), Monument Valley & the Grand Canyon. We were a perfect size group of twelve international travelers in a comfy van plus our delightful Tour Guide, Jade. We had enough time to immerse ourselves in each location and enjoy each experience. When on the road, Jade played upbeat themed music, weaved interested facts into a story and allowed quiet snooze time; plus the rest stops were well-spaced. On the first day we actually were in 3 states!!! Jade's yummy restaurant selections served the needs of each of the travelers' dietary requirements and the overnight accommodations were clean, comfortable & provided a nourishing breakfast. A special shout-out to Jade for her ability to ""herd cats"" while being attentive to each traveler's personal needs. She engaged with each of us in conversation and was delightful with a good sense of humor. A warm Thank You to Jade and Bindlestiff Tours!!!

"the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.

The Most Anticipated Concert Tours Of Summer 2024

Uproxx authors

Although summertime is often associated with festival season, there are also plenty of artists doing their own tours. Those artists may have some festival appearances scattered throughout their itineraries, but the sunny weather is a solid incentive to open up the outdoor amphitheaters and arenas for some memorable live music, fest or not. From Missy Elliott’s first-ever headlining tour to the indie-rock fan’s dream combo of The National and The War On Drugs , check out the most anticipated summer concert tours of 2024.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @21savage

The London-born, Atlanta-bred rapper 21 Savage has been touring North America since May 1, but he has several arena and amphitheater dates left on the American Dream Tour. That includes stops in Southern cities like Tampa, West Palm Beach, Birmingham, and, of course, Atlanta. He’ll be joined by J.I.D, Nardo Wick, and 21 Lil Harold.

Adrianne Lenker

pic.twitter.com/B5RSIpvieg — adrianne lenker (@AdrianneLenker) March 28, 2024

Over the years, Big Thief has become one of the most known names in contemporary indie rock. Frontwoman Adrianne Lenker , as her tour agenda showcases, has become wildly popular in her own right. Following her recent solo album, the sparse, somber Bright Future , Lenker brings opening act Twain along for a slew of dates, many of which are sold out, starting June 9 in Austin.

Bryson Tiller

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bryson (@brysontiller)

Louisville vocalist and songwriter Bryson Tiller recently released his self-titled album back in April. He is currently touring behind it, and it continues through nearly all of June. Along the way, Tiller will make stops in cities like Nashville, Minneapolis, New York, Atlanta, and more.

Since her 2022 debut album, the dark, sprawling Preacher’s Daughter , Ethel Cain has steadily ascended through the ranks to become a pillar of indie-pop. Cain has hinted at new music here and there, but for now, she’s going to keep touring. That resumes with a North American tour this month following a slate of European dates. Her new schedule includes appearances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Hinterland, and others.

Future / Metro Boomin

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Young Metro 3 Times 💔 (@metroboomin)

We Still Don’t Trust You unwittingly became the catalyst for the most fruitful hip-hop beef in recent memory when Kendrick Lamar dissed Drake and J. Cole during his guest verse on “Like That.” Future and Metro Boomin themselves have mostly stayed out of it — relatively, at least. After all, they do have a massive tour to focus on. The duo kicks things off in Kansas City on July 30 and wraps it up in Vancouver on Sept. 9.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Green Day (@greenday)

The Saviors Tour will travel across the globe, in which Bay Area pop-punk trio Green Day will perform their most iconic albums, 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot , in full to respectively celebrate their 30th and 20th anniversaries. For select dates, they’ll bring along Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ❕WUNNA❕🥷🏻✝️ (@gunna)

Gunna is a fixture of Atlanta rap, and he’s taking that idiosyncratic ATL style all over North America plus a small handful of European dates for The Bittersweet Tour. With opener Flo Milli, the YSL affiliate will visit cities like Miami, Orlando, and, obviously, Atlanta.

Janet Jackson

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Janet Jackson (@janetjackson)

The queen of new jack swing, Janet Jackson, will embark on a large North American tour starting June 4 in Palm Desert, California. For last year’s tour, she brought Ludacris along as her opener, and this year, she’s bringing St. Louis rapper Nelly. The Together Again Tour will make stops in Anaheim, Salt Lake City, Denver, St. Paul, and plenty more cities.

Jhené Aiko announces tour dates for ‘The Magic Hour Tour.’ She will be joined by Coi Leray, Tink, UMI, and Kiana Ledé. pic.twitter.com/WgAFyWlluF — Pop Crave (@PopCrave) March 26, 2024

From the middle of June to the end of August, Los Angeles R&B mainstay Jhené Aiko will tour North American arenas with openers Coi Leray, Tink, and Umi in tow. It kicks off at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on June 19 and wraps up at Columbus’ Nationwide Arena on Aug. 22.

Justin Timberlake

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Justin Timberlake (@justintimberlake)

Earlier this year, Justin Timberlake released Everything I Thought It Was , his first studio album since 2018’s folk-tinged Man Of The Woods . To promote the new record, he’s currently on The Forget Tomorrow World Tour. It includes stops in cities like Tulsa, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and many more.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Khruangbin (@khruangbin)

The Houston instrumental trio Khruangbin recently released A LA SALA , an album that leans into the group’s psych-pop proclivities. They’re touring behind it all summer in both Europe and North America, and joining them will be openers Arooj Aftab, Men I Trust, John Carroll Kirby, and Peter Cat Recording Co.

Lizzy McAlpine

View this post on Instagram A post shared by lizzy (@lizzymcalpine)

Back in April, singer and songwriter Lizzy McAlpine released her third studio album, Older . She’s celebrating its release with a summer tour that takes her all the way from Washington, D.C. to Sydney, Australia and back to the States. McAlpine has a busy summer ahead of her, but that gives you plenty of chances to catch her show.

Megan Thee Stallion

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Megan Thee Stallion (@theestallion)

Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion is bringing the Hot Girl Summer Tour all over the globe. It’s currently underway, having stopped at cities like Minneapolis and Baltimore and will soon head to places like New Orleans, Dallas, and Meg’s very own Houston. Joining her will be Memphis rapper GloRilla.

Missy Elliott

It’s hard to believe that someone as influential as Missy Elliott has never done her own headlining tour before. That is, until now. Alongside friends like Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, and Ciara, The Out Of This World Tour will start on July 4 in Vancouver and conclude on Aug. 22 in Rosemont, Illinois, right near the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. This is certainly a show you won’t want to miss.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @mitskileaks

Having wrapped up a slew of European dates, Mitski is headed back to the States in August to tour behind last year’s excellent The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We . She’ll usually be doing multiple nights at sizable theaters, such as three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre and two nights at Detroit’s Masonic Temple Theatre. Joining her will be openers Arlo Parks, Lamp, Laufey, Alvvays, Wyatt Flores, Sharon Van Etten, and Sierra Ferrell, depending on the date.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ODESZA (@odesza)

Odesza is a go-to festival headliner for many booking agents, and it’s easy to understand why. Their seismic strain of EDM is perfect for big fields and arenas alike. They embark on The Last Goodbye Finale Tour with openers Big Boi, Bob Moses, and more in tow, performing multiple nights at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, and NYC’s Madison Square Garden along the way, as well as a hometown-adjacent run at The Gorge.

Help! A Gas Station Charged Me $1,500 and My Bank Won’t Believe It’s Fraud.

After returning home from a wedding in Mexico, a traveler found a huge charge on his credit card and suspected a gas station attendant was responsible. Wells Fargo didn’t believe him.

A photo illustration of a person’s outstretched hand and arm. The hand is holding a silver credit card and a gas nozzle and black cord is wrapped like a snake around the person’s arm.

By Seth Kugel

Dear Tripped Up,

Last October, my extended family spent a week in Todos Santos, in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, for a wedding. All went well, but when I got back, I noticed an unusual charge on my credit card: $1,500.49, made on the day we flew home to the United States from San José del Cabo. The merchant appeared to be a restaurant in Mexico City. I recalled that when we went to fill up the rental car at a Chevron station near the airport, the attendant placed the card in a hand-held machine and then told me it had been rejected, requiring me to use a second card. Nothing else unusual happened that day, and reviews on Google for this gas station contain eerily similar accusations of fraudulent charges from other tourists. I disputed the charge, but Wells Fargo repeatedly denied my claim, even when I asked the Better Business Bureau to intercede. Can you help? Nate, Wayland, Mass.

We cannot be sure the fraud occurred at the gas station, but if so, it’s a clever scam. The worker presumably slipped your card into a bogus card reader and charged you $1,500 just as you were rushing to return your rental car and catch a flight out of the country, knowing you were unlikely to report the crime to Mexican authorities. It’s a good reminder for travelers that we need to be ever vigilant on vacation, even when we’re cranky or tired or stressed or otherwise out of our element.

It’s also a good excuse to consider how dependent we have become on our credit card issuers to save the day in such situations. As you found out, that doesn’t always happen.

Humor me while I consider the situation from the perspective of a bank like Wells Fargo. What might seem like obvious fraud when it happens to us is not necessarily a crystal clear crime to a fraud claims team tasked with sifting out their clients who are honest vacationers from others who may themselves be fraudsters.

Since I trust you are in the former camp, I reached out to Wells Fargo and soon afterward, a representative got in touch with you by phone and agreed to refund the charge, plus interest. A week later, you received a check for $1,609.96.

“We take customer concerns seriously and seriously investigate all customer claims,” wrote Jennifer Landan, a spokeswoman for the company, in an email statement to me. “We worked directly with our customer on this matter, and it is resolved.”

But, of course, it should have been resolved earlier and without my intervention. Was there anything you should have done differently? Was there anything Wells Fargo should have done differently?

The answers are yes and yes.

Though you explicitly gave your permission for Wells Fargo to discuss the incident with me, Ms. Langan told me the company would not talk about the particulars of your case. But she did leave a clue, writing to me that Wells Fargo encourages customers to act “when they receive a fraud alert, phone call or correspondence about a transaction.”

So I asked you to look through your phone and email messages with Wells Fargo at the time of your travel, and the bank did send you a fraud alert, via text, at about the time of the transaction. You didn’t get it at the time, you said, because you had not been able to receive messages while in Mexico. And you somehow missed it when you got back home.

Though I encourage everyone to disconnect while traveling, I will henceforth recommend an exception for text messages so you can monitor your credit card transactions. (You might even consider having your bank alert you every time a transaction occurs, even if it is not suspicious, which can also be helpful in monitoring what exchange rate you’re getting.)

What happened on Wells Fargo’s end that led them to reject your claim multiple times? Though I couldn’t get specific details from Ms. Langan, we do know exactly what the Wells Fargo representative said, since you recorded the call with her permission.

The agent told you it was “normal procedure” for Wells Fargo’s fraud teams to deny fraud claims if a chip card was in the owner’s possession the entire time, which you told them it was. But technically speaking, that was incorrect: The card was briefly out of your hands when the station attendant took it and inserted in a hand-held machine at your car window.

OK, so you didn’t see the text alert and didn’t correctly parse exactly what “in your possession” meant. But given your continued appeals and the online reviews of the gas station and others in the area that corroborate your account, it’s disappointing Wells Fargo continued to be so stubborn.

The representative you spoke to conceded the team who worked on your case could have done better. “We are going to try to revise our procedures,” she said, noting that she had coached the person who made the decision on how to do “better, thorough research.”

That’s good to hear, although I’d feel more confident if I had heard it straight from an official company source rather than on a recorded phone call.

Here’s another piece of advice for travelers as mobile card readers become the default form of payment in many places: When possible, ask for the machine and to insert (or tap) the card yourself, watching the screen carefully. In much of the world (though for some reason, not in many American restaurants), the days of a merchant taking your card to the back to run it through a machine (and potentially a skimmer to steal your information) are long gone.

Though you were quite reasonably frustrated with Wells Fargo, let’s be clear here. The real villains are those who committed this crime in the first place and somehow, whether at the gas station or elsewhere, managed to charge $1,500 to a business called Comida Corrida in faraway Mexico City.

I got in touch with Grupo Horizon, which operates the Chevron Emerald gas station you went to, as well as dozens of Chevron stations in the states of Baja California Sur and Sinaloa.

Gilberto Gómez, the company’s business director, responded by email, saying he was unaware of such issues and encouraged you to send him details. “We take follow-ups to this kind of complaint very seriously and meticulously,” he wrote in Spanish. “If there is any harm to our customers attributable to the gas station, we address it.” (I’ve given you his email address and you told me you would follow up with him.)

But considering the Google reviews at this location and several other (non-Chevron) gas stations in the region, I am skeptical that Grupo Horizon is not aware of the problem. Mr. Gómez did not respond when I followed up twice about whether he had seen the Google reviews.

I also got in touch with the Los Cabos Tourism Board. When its managing director, Rodrigo Esponda, got back to me, he said he was “deeply concerned about the situation,” and had spoken to the Baja California Sur state attorney’s office, which told him it was investigating the matter. He also recommended that tourists who have complaints about a business in the region should register them with Mexico’s federal consumer protection organ, Profeco.

In the meantime, could the solution simply be to pay cash at Cabo-area gas stations? Alas, no: There are also reports of gas station attendants switching out large bills customers pay with for smaller ones and demanding more. And don’t even get me started on the Tripped Up complaints that come about the poor customer service travelers encounter in car rental agencies near Mexican beach destinations. The best solution for sun-seekers may be to skip the car rental altogether and hire a driver, use car-share services or take public transportation.

Sturgill Simpson to release new album under a new name, embark on 2024 concert tour

new 40 tours

A decade following the breakout success of his May 2014-released album "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music," Sturgill Simpson has announced not just his forthcoming eighth album — July 12's "Passage Du Desir" — under a new alias, Johnny Blue Skies, but also a 28-date North American tour.

Famously, Simpson noted he would only release five studio albums under his name. His Johnny Blue Skies debut will be released via his own independent label, High Top Mountain Records. Simpson (credited as Johnny Blue Skies) and David Ferguson co-produced songs recorded at Nashville, Tennessee's Clement House Recording Studio and London's Abbey Road Studios .

"Passage Du Desir" is currently available for pre-order at shop.sturgillsimpson.com .

The Passage du Desir is a shopping district in downtown Paris' 10th arrondissement, or district, located a 20-minute drive east of the Eiffel Tower.

In a 2021 feature for the Nashville Tennessean , part of the USA TODAY Network, Simpson noted that he idealized a career in which he was free of making records that sustained a self-branded industry as a machine.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"To me, that sounds like prison. It's a job, you're a politician."

Instead, the past decade has seen him achieve Grammy-winning acclaim for five full-length studio albums, two COVID-19 quarantine bluegrass projects — "Cuttin' Grass Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" — and acting in film and television roles, including "The Dead Don't Die," " Queen & Slim ," " Killers of the Flower Moon ," and " The Righteous Gemstones ."

Regarding the sound that his Johnny Blue Skies debut could encompass, he offered to The Tennessean in 2021 that he would need to "(have) something to say" and be "really excited about" a "really great idea for a record."

"I'll put it this way, if I go back into the studio it'll be because I thought of the complete and total reinvention that gets me excited," Simpson said. "But it won't be my name. I'm done with that all that."

Sturgill Simpson tour 2024 tickets: What you need to know

Fans are being asked to register before tickets go on sale. Ukraine-Russia war latest: Putin warns Russia could provide long-range weapons to attack West - and issues new nuclear threat

Vladimir Putin has warned he could supply weapons to other nations to strike Western countries in a meeting with international journalists. The Russian president also reaffirmed the country's position on using nuclear weapons. Follow live updates below.

By Nicole Johnston, Asia correspondent in Beijing

Putin's St Petersburg summit comes right out of the same playbook as China's President Xi Jinping.

So how do you get a read on China's geo-political thinking? One way is by wading through the dry and detailed pronouncements of its president, that's where the nuggets are.

In 2022, Xi said: "The world today is undergoing major changes, unseen in a century.

"The most important characteristic of the world is chaos and the trend is likely to continue."

In the world according to Xi, the time is right to reorder global governance with China at its pinnacle, where it belongs. His view is that the US anchored world order is breaking down.

Many countries in the global south are on board with China, chaffing at the dominance of the US led international system and ready to countenance a shake-up.

Russia is in lock step with China.

Both countries need each other. Though Russia needs China more, for trade and diplomatic cover.

In this great power rivalry, the China-Russian axis could draw in other regional disrupters like Iran and North Korea.

If that happens it will be a formidable alliance based on hostility towards the US, sympathy for Russia, a deep fear of subversion and in the case of China, a relentless goal to unify with Taiwan.

Ukraine's main hydropower company says it has initiated proceedings to secure damages for Russia's destruction of the Kakhovka dam and power station a year ago today.

State-run Ukrhydroenergo said it estimates the damage to be around €2.5bn (£2.12bn).

The explosion of the dam on 6 June 2023 - which sent huge amounts of water across swathes of southern Ukraine and left thousands of people without drinking water - was met with global outcry and accusations of a war crime.

"The company's actions aim to compensate for the losses caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant," Ukrhydroenergo said in a statement.

"The company believes that initiating international arbitration process is the most promising way to compensate for the losses."

The firm said Vladimir Putin, his government and other authorised bodies had been informed.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska have arrived in Normandy for an event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

French President Emmanuel Macron greeted the Ukrainian leader with a hug as he arrived, and the president was applauded as he went to take his place inside the event.

Several other political figures including UK defence minister Grant Shapps embraced Mr Zelenskyy as they greeted him.

Earlier, the Ukrainian president said he was "honoured" to participate in the anniversary event and said he would also take part in "important events and meetings aimed at strengthening our country".

"This event and day serve as a reminder of the courage and determination demonstrated in the pursuit of freedom and democracy," he said.

"Allies defended Europe's freedom then, and Ukrainians do so now. Unity prevailed then, and true unity can prevail today."

Earlier today we reported claims by Russian officials that Ukrainian drones hit an oil refinery and fuel depot in Russian border regions.

Rostov regional governor Vasily Golubev said an overnight drone attack struck the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, causing a fire to erupt.

Meanwhile the governor for Belgorod, a Russian border region which has come under frequent Ukrainian fire during the war, said a drone hit an oil depot and caused an explosion.

No casualties were reported in either attack.

The trial of a US soldier accused of stealing is under way in Russia's far eastern city of Vladivostok.

Staff Sergeant Gordon Black flew to the city to see his girlfriend last month but was arrested after she accused him of stealing from her, US and Russian officials said.

The 34-year-old, who was on leave at the time, faces up to five years in prison if found guilty.

The US army said the soldier had not been given official clearance to travel to Russia's far east.

According to Russian news agency RIA, Sgt Black will give evidence during the trial and respond to the allegations against him.

He has been cooperating with authorities, the report said.

Following today's court session, Sgt Black's girlfriend, Alexandra Vashchuk, told reporters "it was a simple domestic dispute" during which the soldier "became aggressive and attacked" her.

"He then stole money from my wallet and I didn't give him permission to do it," she said.

Joe Biden has just addressed the crowds at the US national D-Day commemoration in Normandy, alongside French president Emmanuel Macron.

The US president began with a retelling of the devastation and evil unleashed on the world by Hitler and told the stories of some veterans in the audience.

"Every one of them knew the probability of dying was real, but they did it anyway," he said.

Mr Biden prayed that America never forgets the importance of alliances, noting NATO as the "greatest military alliance in the history of the world".

"Isolationism was not the answer 80 years ago, and it is not the answer today," he said.

"We know the dark forces that these heroes fought against 80 years ago, they never fade."

He added: "The struggle between dictatorship and freedom is unending. Here in Europe we see one stark example. Ukraine has been invaded by a tyrant bent on domination."

Mr Biden continued: "Make no mistake, the autocrats of the world are watching closely.

"To surrender to bullies, to bow down to dictators, is simply unthinkable. Were we to do that, it means we would be forgetting what happened here on these hallowed beaches.

"History tells us that freedom is not free: If you want to know the price of freedom, come here to Normandy and look."

Russia has detained a French national on suspicion of collecting information on Russian military activity, investigators have said.

The man had visited the country repeatedly over several years, Russia's Investigative Committee said.

He's also said to have held meetings with Russian citizens.

The man has not been named.

The outcome of the US election this November is unlikely to have any impact on Washington's policy towards Russia, Vladimir Putin has said.

In comments cited by the Russian embassy in the UK, the Russian president said the Kremlin does "not think there will be any serious changes".

"You know perfectly well that the current developments in the US are political infighting; they are burning themselves out, their state and their political system," he said.

Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump are their parties' presumptive nominees for the looming election.

Several polls are putting Trump ahead of Mr Biden, despite his recent criminal conviction.

Earlier this year, Mr Putin said he would prefer to see Mr Biden re-elected to the White House as he is "more experienced".

But he has also enjoyed a previous good relationship with Trump, who has often praised his leadership.

Hungary will attend a Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland next week despite Budapest strengthening its ties with Moscow.

Foreign minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed at an economic forum in St Petersburg that his country would be represented at the summit on 15 June.

The summit is aimed at building support among dozens of countries for a 10-point peace proposal from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which includes Russian troops fully withdrawing from Ukrainian territory.

Russia has not been invited, and has branded it a waste of time.

Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral ties during a meeting in October.
