Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green came out decades ago, there is still a sizeable amount of fans who obsess over the game’s brilliance. And rightfully so, the game is the definitive Pokemon experience; it has all the original Pokemon that we grew up loving and not to mention the nostalgia!

But times have changed; the games are old, and this isn’t a bad thing per se, but we’ve grown accustomed to newer and fast-paced gameplay.

The 2000s were a different era. People had a good attention span and had patience. In this modern age, we want everything as fast as possible.

Pokemon games from the past are prone to these problems, of being slow-paced and taking time to get to the reward. Fortunately, there are some tricks that you can use. If you’re on one of the best Pokemon emulators , you can just speed up!

But speed isn’t the only issue here. There are some great Pokemon in the game that evolve only after trading. Now, who is going to trade with you?

There are also Pokemon, which were only available at certain events. Now, unless you have a time machine, this will be a problem.

But don’t worry, GameShark cheats take care of this problem for you. So we decided to rank the 10 best Pokemon Fire Red cheats that you should utilize in your next play-through.

(Note – The cheats may or may not work for Pokemon Leaf Green even though they’re the same game. There are different cheat codes for Pokemon Leaf Green!)

Table of Contents

What Is Gameshark?

gameshark

Before we deep dive into the list, if you’re new to cheats in Pokemon, you won’t be familiar with what GameShark means. GameShark, simply put, is a tool used in gaming consoles to do some things that the game won’t allow you.

For example, obtaining an item, rewatching cut scenes, etc.

Devices like the GameShark were top-rated back in the day, especially for the GameBoy and the PS1. These devices allowed you to do a lot of exciting stuff with your console.

But nowadays, as almost every Pokemon Fan is playing on an emulator, you can just use the cheat code we provide without the device itself.

Also, remember to not activate a lot of cheats simultaneously; it may break your game if the cheats aren’t compatible.

Make sure to make multiple save files just in case. The codes given below are tried and tested, but taking precautions is good.

The most requested cheat is now available! We’re thrilled to announce that we already have the codes you’ll need to change the nature of any Pokemon you find in the wild. Pokemon nature modifier cheat is useful for breeding more powerful and competitive Pokemon.

Before entering a battle, enter and activate the code. The cheat only works for wild Pokemon and is therefore useless when selecting a starter Pokemon.

To make the most of your Pokemon’s nature, you may need a Pokemon Nature Chart to help you improve your Pokemon’s stats.

A commenter going by the handle Problem Solver has posted some very useful information about fixes and other things you should know if you’re using GBA4iOS, so take a look.

Hey everybody, so this is just a brief introduction and solution to a variety of the glitches you may encounter while using the codes and how to fix them to enhance your gameplay. If you are using GBA4IOS V2.1 or any other emulator that enables the codes to work (Please keep in mind that several versions of the emulators you are using such as Myboy, JohnGBA, or VBA emulator may be outdated versions so not all codes may register depending on what emulator you are using. Also, versions of the games you have downloaded do not register all of the codes for them to work. It is recommended you use versions 1.0 squirrels version of fire red or US version. If you’re having difficulty with a code that won’t work, drop a comment, and I’ll help you out any way I can.) 1.) Pokémon Modifier and encounter code. (Only input the 2nd master code for GBA4IOS users then input the encounter code afterward if you input them in any other sequence they won’t work!!!) So when using this code, of course, you will be able to run into any Pokémon as long as you type in the code and encounter code correctly. While using this code sometimes the Pokémon you want to catch may result in 1 hit KO’ing your Pokémon. To fix this error simply delete the code or disable it, go to a Pokémon center restore your Pokémon by talking to the person behind the counter and then enter a battle with any wild Pokémon the glitch should be gone if the problem persists still delete the code and reinput it again. If the Pokémon appear like a huge question mark with the name “??????” It means the encounter code is wrong, double check just to be safe. Also, as a side note if the Pokémon you caught using this code when evolving stays on the message “…?” Simply release it from your PC and catch it again recommended you use the Experience code to get back to the level you were at. 2.) Infinite Exp code. Using this code sometimes causes your Pokémon to keep leveling up even after you’ve disabled the code from the menu. The reason this occurs is due to a slight error in the registering of the code after you used it. For example, if you have the code enabled and you save the game, then return to it, later on, to play again even after you disabled the code. The game registers the code as still active resulting in endless level ups to fix this just delete the code wait for the level up of the Pokémon to finish and then save and restart your game and reinput the code all over again to stop the endless increase in level. 3.) Catching and stealing Pokémon from trainers. It is recommended you save before using this code so that if your game becomes corrupt or freezes, you have a point of save origin to refer back to. Now then this glitch typically occurs after you catch a trainers Pokémon watch the video that’s posted first to know how to use the code. Now, to solve this issue, unfortunately, there is no way to get around the bad eggs when you catch a trainers Pokémon. If caught correctly, the bad egg will not show, but in case it does simply delete the code and then restart your game from your save point. Do not save the game if a bad egg appears or it will ruin your game completely. Definitely check your PC as well after you’ve caught the trainers Pokémon because sometimes the bad eggs may not show up in your Pokémon line up but maybe in the PC box for some odd reason. 4.) Pokémon level modifier. So there really isn’t a huge variety of problems with this code, but I recently ran into one which is that when using the code sometimes when you go back to edit the code lets say from Lv 30 to encounter a Pokémon at lv 60 it will keep showing Pokémon at Lv 30. When you encounter that error, it’s because the game registered the code Lv 30 permanently simply delete the code and reinput it to encounter whatever Level of Pokémon you are searching for. Got any other glitches that I didn’t cover on here? Drop a comment below, and I’ll help you out as much as I can. Good luck everyone, hope this answers some questions you all might be having or some issues you all may be experiencing. Problem Solver

Unfortunately, some cheats will not work for you, specifically those with multiple-liner cheat codes. You need the paid version of the app for it to work fully.

The majority of these cheats have been tested by the PokeHarbor team and are 100% compatible with Pokemon FireRed (US) Squirrels or FireRed V1.0. If it doesn’t work, look for and download the FireRed (US) Squirrels version.

Is there a cheat I’ve missed, or do you have a cheat code for Fire Red (any version) that you’d like to add to the list above? You can help our fellow Pokemon players by simply submitting your working Fire Red GameShark codes, CodeBreaker codes, or Action Replay cheats in the comment section below.

If you’re looking for a nostalgia kick, there’s nothing better than playing one of the earlier Pokémon games. Pokémon Red was one of the first Pokémon games for the Game Boy and still holds a special place in most gamers’ hearts.

Pokémon Fire Red is the 2004 remake for the Game Boy Advance, and while developers Game Freak HQ kept the core gameplay unchanged, they did add over 20 new Pokémon for each version (FireRed and LeafGreen). Pokémon Fire Red is an ideal place to start if you want to relive your childhood.

While plenty of Pokémon ROM hacks are difficult , such as Pokémon Phoenix Rising or Pokémon Omega Red, most gamers don’t expect the base version to be challenging. Surprisingly, Pokémon FireRed can still be tricky to play for newbies and Pokemon veterans alike due to its lack of modern quality-of-life features.

The good news is that most Pokémon ROMs contain various cheat codes and programs to make your life just a little bit easier and help you catch ’em all.

In-Game Cheats

While most cheats rely on a cheat program like GameShark v3, Pokémon FireRed has some in-built features that make playing the game easier. These aren’t necessarily cheating, but they’re essential to helping you complete the game.

Upgrading the Pokédex

You can update your Pokédex once you’ve completed the main story and collected over 60 pokémon. Simply visit the Professor in Pallet Town once you meet the required criteria to receive an upgrade that allows you to visit new locations and unlocks new evolutions for your pokemon.

Safari Zone Glitch

If you want to catch Pokémon without wasting valuable time in the Safari Zone, lightly tap right and left to change your character’s orientation without actually moving. Doing so will still allow you to encounter wild Pokémon without lowering your timer.

Trainer Card Upgrades

Upgrading your trainer card changes your star rating and the look of your card. You can upgrade your card up to four times by completing the following challenges:

  • Complete the main story
  • Complete the National Pokédex (except for Mew, Celebi, Deoxys, and Jirachi)
  • Complete the Kanto Pokédex
  • Get a score of 200+ in the Dodrio Berry Picking and Pokémon Jump minigames

Secret Items in Pokémon Fire Red

If you want to get the rarest items in the game, you’ll need to get the Itemfinder. You can get the Itemfinder — once you’ve caught 30 Pokémon — from one of Professor Oak’s aides. You can find them on route 11 between Vermillion City and Lavender Town, on the upper floor of the gate.

Once you have the Itemfinder, you can return to specific locations to find unique secret items associated with some characters you met before. It may take a while since you need to stand in exactly the same spot they did. Some items you can find include:

  • Leftovers from where the Snorlax was (near Cycling Road and Silence Bridge)
  • Macho Brace from where Giovanni was in Viridian Gym
  • Sacred Ash from the spot at Navel Rock where Ho-Oh was
  • Soothe Bell from the Pokémon Tower where Mr. Fuji was

Gameshark Codes

The best way to access Pokémon cheat codes is with a dedicated program like GameShark or Action Replay. These come standard with any GBA emulator, including the Visual Boy Advance and the My Boy emulator for Android.

Using Gameshark to Enter a Cheat Code in Visual Boy Advance

Open VBA as usual and select your Pokémon FireRed ROM. Once it starts running, open the VBA cheats menu and select “Cheat List” from the dropdown menu. Choose Gameshark and then enter the Pokémon code you want to use.

You can enter multiple codes at once and even write a description for each cheat code so that you know what it does. Once you hit OK, the game will resume with your chosen cheats.

Using Gameshark to Enter a Cheat Code in My Boy

The basic process of enabling cheats in the My Boy emulator is the same as for VBA since both use GameShark v3 as their base cheat engine. Open your ROM like you would when you play Pokémon FireRed and then tap the menu button in the top left corner.

Tap “Cheats” and then “New Cheat.” You’ll get a new window where you can type your cheat name, a description of the cheat, and the cheat code. When you’re done, tap the three dots in the top right corner and select “Save” to save your cheat.

Hit the back button on your phone to resume the game. The free version of the app allows you to enter a single line of code per entry, so you’ll need to enter multi-line cheats line-by-line as different cheats.

If you want to enable multiple cheats at once, you’ll need to tap the plus in the top right corner while in the Cheats menu. You can also edit, disable, or delete cheats while in this menu.

Best Pokémon Fire Red Cheats

Most popular pokémon cheats.

While you can use Pokémon Fire Red cheats to modify almost any part of the game, the following are the ones you’ll probably use the most. Some reduce the grind to level up pokemon, including giving you all the TM/HM items you need. In contrast, others make it easier to walk through walls, get uncommon items, or even make sure you get the right pokemon with a wild pokemon gender modifier or pokemon nature modifier.

Catching Pokémon

A great wild Pokémon encounter cheat spawns a legendary Pokémon encounter or shiny Pokémon encounter. Start by entering the master code:

000014D1 000A

1003dae6 0007

Once you’ve successfully input the master code, follow it up with one of the legendary Pokémon you want to catch.

You can also use a master code and Pokémon ID to spawn normal Pokémon without waiting for random battles. It’s a little bit trickier because there are two master codes depending on the Pokémon’s number.

Pokémon from 1 – 250 will need the following master code: 17543C48 E65E0B97.

If you want to spawn a Pokémon of 250 and above, you’ll need to use this master code:

8C050415 EB447C7A

AD86124F 2823D8DA

A0CCA92E 61571E3B

E2302908 64FD3288

25AF3162 06D16963

If you still want the experience of catching Pokémon yourself but don’t want to spend too much time finding the right one, consider using a code to guarantee your Pokémon will have the desired nature. A Pokémon’s nature can hugely impact its stats and moves, so getting that perfect nature can mean the difference between success and failure.

The cheat has a master code and the Pokémon nature identifier that you’ll need to apply before the battle.

The master code is: AA3BB0ED 41CD5D95

And the nature identifiers are:

These codes can be tricky to use since you need to enable your desired location code before walking through the nearest door or entrance and disable it immediately. If you don’t, you’ll keep teleporting to the location whenever you go through a door. However, it’s a great way to get around if you don’t feel like exploring or dealing with wild Pokémon all the time.

Pokémon Max Stats

This cheat is a lifesaver if you’re sick of leveling up your Pokémon. The cheat works off your Pokémon’s position and arrangement and levels that particular Pokémon to max level.

Infinite Items Cheat

The infinite items cheat has two parts: the first affects the inventory slot, while the second part is the name of the item you want to make infinite.

So, to get unlimited rare candy in slot 1, you’d type: 82025840 44, where the first bit makes Slot 1 items infinite, and 44 represents “Rare Candy.”

The first part of the code is as follows:

  • Modify Item in Slot 1: 82025840 xxxx
  • Modify Item in Slot 2: 82025844 xxxx
  • Modify Item in Slot 3: 82025848 xxxx
  • Modify Item in Slot 4: 8202584C xxxx
  • Modify Item in Slot 5: 82025850 xxxx

You can duplicate almost any item by using its unique identifier in the game, including:

Green Scarf: 101

Pink Scarf: 100

Dragon Claw: 151

Deep Sea Tooth: 00C0

Deep Sea Scale: 00C1

Blue Flute: 0027

Smoke Ball: 00C2

Green Shard: 0033

Yellow Flute: 0028

Wiki Berry: 0090

You can even obtain all of the evolution stones, including:

Stone of the Sun: 005D

Moonstone: 005E

Fire Stone: 005F

Thunder Stone: 60

Water Stone: 61

Leaf Stone: 62

Getting the Most Out of Pokémon Fire Red Cheats

While activating cheats is relatively simple, it can interfere with how your game runs. If you have an incompatible Pokémon Fire Red Rom, you’ll experience crashes and glitches. You can also break your game by enabling too many cheats at once.

To get the best experience using Pokémon Fire Red cheats, follow some best practices to keep your game stable and fun.

Only activate a maximum of three cheats per game. Cheats often alter variables within the game, and if you mess around with too many of these at once, the game won’t be able to reconcile them, leading to crashes and glitches. Also, be sure to turn cheats off after using them to prevent future glitches on your save game.

Use recommended emulators such as:

  • GBA4ios for iOS
  • My Boy for Android
  • Retroarch for MacOS
  • Visual Boy Advance for Windows

Save your game before applying any cheats. Once you’ve activated a cheat, check your bag. If you see any irregularities, exit without saving the game and restore your original settings.

You may find that some cheats don’t work immediately. Go in and out of entrances or doors to refresh the game world at least five times before giving up. Sometimes, cheats can take a while to affect the game, and changing locations can force these cheats to take effect.

Get the Most Out of Pokémon Fire Red with Cheat Codes

Playing Pokémon Fire Red or Leaf Green on a GBA emulator can feel like a blast from the past, but it’s a game that still holds up. Pokémon Fire Red is a perfect place to start if you’re playing due to nostalgia or want an old-school introduction to the Pokémon series.

As with all older games, Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green have rough edges that can detract from your enjoyment. They can be extremely grindy and luck-based, especially if you want to collect all of the Pokémon and hit all of the achievements.

That’s where having a GBA emulator can help. Most emulators come with GameShark v3 or another cheat system built-in.

Using Pokémon FireRed cheats is extremely simple. Once you’ve found the GameShark codes that adjust the game to your needs, all you need to do is enter the cheat code and let the emulator handle the rest.

All Pokemon Fire Red Cheats for GameShark

pokemon fire red emulator cheats

So you’re here because you’re either looking for a list of Pokemon Fire Red cheats or you’re wondering how to use them with your current emulator. The good news is that we’ll be covering both in this guide.

Below, we’ll be going over all notable Pokemon Fire Red emulator cheats and sharing the cheat codes for each. Before that, we’ll have a quick section explaining how you can use these cheats codes with the mGBA emulator. Surprisingly, the process is actually much simpler than you might think.

The cheats that we’ll be listing below are all GameShark codes. Keep in mind that for some codes, you will first need to enter a master code before entering the specific code that follows it. Each section that requires a master code will have it and explain which to enter first.

For example, for codes that require a master code as well, you would enter it in the following format:

[master code] [cheat code]

You obviously wouldn’t include the brackets, that’s just for the example above. In practice, it would look something like this:

AA3BB0ED 41CD5D95 93F04759 F95753D9

If you ever need to jump to any particular cheat, you can easily do so by using the table of contents below to go straight to it and find the code.

Also be sure to check out our list of the best Pokemon Emerald ROM hacks as well.

Let’s not waste anymore time and jump right in!

How To Use Fire Red Emulator Cheats?

First things first, we recommend you use the Game Boy Advance emulator known as mGBA. It’s hands down the best Pokemon Fire Red emulator you can find get and it supports Fire Red cheat codes.

Finding The mGBA Cheats Menu

Right off the bat, if you try to open the mGBA cheats menu without already having a game loaded up, you’ll notice that you’re unable to select it and that it’s greyed out. You can’t get into the cheats menu without a ROM already loaded in mGBA.

Load Your Pokémon FireRed ROM

  • First, go ahead and load up your Pokemon Fire Red ROM into the mGBA emulator.
  • Now that it’s loaded and running, go to Tools > Cheats

Go to Tools > Cheats

Now you will see the mGBA cheats menu popup and if this is your first time adding a cheat code, it will still be blank.

  • Click Add New Code to add a new cheat code

Add New Code

  • Click into the box that says Enter codes here…
  • Copy and paste or type your cheat code into this box
  • Depending on the type of cheat code that you’re using, you may want to select the Code type at the bottom if you’re using GameShark codes or Action Reply MAX codes, but often you will likely find yourself just using the Audodetect option anyway as it usually works quite well (it is recommended after all)
  • Once you have finished entering your cheat code, click the Add Lines button to add the code
  • Now find the (untitled) cheat code on the left and double click on it to rename it
  • Go ahead and enter a new name for this cheat code so that you can easily find it in the future
  • You may enable or disable any Pokémon cheat codes from here at anytime by simple clicking the checkbox (an empty checkbox means this code will not be used and a checked box means it will be)
  • You may also enable multiple cheats at once, including a master code followed by a space and the subsequent cheat code after it

When you’re finished, you can exit out of the cheat code menu and go back to your game to resume playing. If you find that your cheats didn’t take yet, try closing mGBA, reopening it, and reloading your ROM.

Unlimited PP

I can already hear some of you making jokes about this one. No, unfortunately this cheat code doesn’t work in the real world fellas. In Pokemon Fire Red, PP is the number of times a Pokemon is able to perform a certain move. Certain moves have relatively low PP levels, meaning that they can’t be used very often during battles without replenishing it. With this code, you can use these moves as often as you want.

Well now that we’ve gone through all the cheats in Fire Red and went over how to use them with the mGBA emulator, you’re all set! Hope you had lots of fun testing these GameShark cheat codes out.

There are other emulators that support cheat codes as well, but listing out each one and how to enter and save cheat codes would be rather time consuming. Another GBA emulator option that allows cheat codes would be the Visual Boy Advance (VBA emulator). It has a VBA cheats menu that you can use to enter GameShark codes for Fire Red as well.

How to enter Cheat Codes in Pokemon FireRed

Applying these cheat codes is a breeze with the right tools. Such tools range from cheat-device emulators to cartridges such as Game Shark, Action Replay, or Codebreaker. These tools work by manipulating the game data, making them an essential part of the cheat code application process.

A cheat-device emulator or cartridge essentially acts as an interface between your game and the cheat codes. When you input cheat codes using one of these tools, they modify the game's pre-existing code, altering the game's course to your advantage. Whether it's Game Shark, Action Replay, or Codebreaker, each tool has its unique process for code application. So, it's crucial to follow each step precisely for effective results.

Once the codes are correctly input, the game adapts accordingly, granting access to hidden items, unlimited health, and much more. The world of Pokémon LeafGreen suddenly becomes even more thrilling!

Remember, though, to use these tools responsibly. Overreliance on cheat codes can detract from the game's original experience and challenge. But, occasionally, they can inject an extra dose of fun into your Pokémon adventure.

In need of some Pokémon Fire Red cheats to help your way through Kanto? Cheats and glitches have been a part of the Pokémon series from the very beginning, and Pokémon Fire Red is no different.

A remake of the original Pokémon Red game that started the worldwide phenomenon, Pokémon Fire Red remains incredibly popular all these years later, which of course means the cheats remain popular as well - so if you're after unlimited rare candies, max stats or of course a way to catch the elusive Mew, we have you covered.

Check out the video above to see the five best cheat codes in Pokémon Fire Red. Or keep on reading for the full list and details on how to use them.

How to use Pokémon Fire Red cheats

If you're playing the old-fashioned way with a GameBoy Advance and are using a Gameshark or Action Replay to cheat, then all you have to do is type in codes to activate your chosen cheat - though beware that some of these codes are rather long!

However, these devices usually require a master code to be used first. The master code for Pokémon FireRed is as follows:

More like this

3AF85ACA C4D18CEC 8E883EFF 92E9660D

Simply type in the master code using your Gameshark or Action Replay and you're ready to cheat - all you'll have to do is enter the codes for your chosen cheat which are all listed below.

However, if you're using an emulator such as the Visual Boy Advance for Windows, you'll have to follow a few more steps to use Pokémon Fire Red cheats:

  • Open up the VBA emulator
  • Now select File, then Open and now choose the Pokémon Fire Red ROM
  • Select Cheats and then Cheat list from the VBA menu
  • Select Gameshark
  • Enter your codes of choice
  • Select OK twice and you will be back in the game

Just a few pointers first - obviously save your game before using any cheats, and try to only use a maximum of three at a time or you may start encountering problems in your game. Be aware that cheats may not work every time, and turn off cheats after use!

How to Upgrade the Pokédex

After completing the main story and collecting at least 60 pokémon, visit the Professor in Pallet Town to receive the National Pokédex. You can now visit new locations and evolve your pokémon into more advanced forms.

Secret Item Locations

Once you get the Itemfinder, you can revisit locations where characters previously stood and use it to uncover rare items. You must be standing in the exact same spot they were when you use the Itemfinder.

Berry Glitch Fix (for Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire)

For this, you'll need two GBA consoles, a link cable, any one of Pokemon Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen Versions, and a Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire cartridge. Start up Pokemon Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen, and hold B+Select on the title screen. Connect this console to the other containing the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire cartridge, and follow the directions given to you by the game. This allows you to download a fix to a glitch in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire that starts near the end of every year and affects time-based events; most prominently, the growing of Berries.

Determining Pokemon's feelings towards you.

When you use an item on one of your Pokemon outside of a battle, such as a Potion, the Pokemon will either move closer or away from you in the short intermission sequence. How far the Pokemon moves depends on how much it likes you. If it does not move at all, it feels neutral.

Go to the left side of the Gamecorner. Talk to the guy that looks like a fisherman, and he will give you 10 free coins.

Ditto Breeding

You don't need to find one pokemon of each gender in order to breed them. You simply have to put your pokemon of choice and a ditto into the daycare center. After a short while, the old man will tell you that they found an egg, and when it hatches, it will be whichever pokemon you matched up with Ditto

Saving Time in the Safari Zone

When you are in the Safari Zone, it counts the number of steps you take to determine the amount of time you have left. Well, if you want to catch a rare Pokémon, but don't want to run out of time, enter the grass, then lightly tap the directional pad. You will change the way you are facing, but it will not count as a step. You can have near-infinite time in the Safari Zone doing this. It is helpful when some Pokémon, such as Chansey, appear in only one section of the Zone.

In Fuchsia City, you will notice a lot of Pokemon in enclosures, this is because there is a zoo right in Fuchsia City. This makes it look very big, but size wise it isn't. Gameplay wise, there is quite a bit to do. When navigating around, you can get to all areas without Cut, but it's easier to cut bushes down to work your way around Fuchsia.

Firstly head to the Pokecenter by heading to the left side of town, then head down and to the right. Heal up and head to the house on the left. The man inside will delete moves (including HM moves) off your Pokemon. For more information check out the Move Tutors Guide .

The Safari Zone is not only a great place for catching Pokemon, it is also crucial in gaining two important HMs in the game, Surf and Strength. Head as far north as you can go in Fuchsia, and enter the building at the top. This is the Safari Zone.

When you encounter a wild Pokemon you will have four options, Throw Ball means you will throw a Safari Ball and will try to catch the Pokemon. Throw Bait will keep the wild Pokemon around for longer. Throw Rock will make the Pokemon easier to catch but it will be more likely to flee. Run means you will just run from the wild Pokemon. Now here is a small tip if you get into an area a long way from the entry and have very few steps left or are running low on cash. Stay in one spot, and by lightly tapping the direction buttons, you can turn around. This will not count toward your steps but you will still encounter wild Pokemon! Also note, EVERYWHERE you go in the Safari Zone counts as steps, including the "Rest" houses. Listed below are the wild encounters and rates. Note that fishing is the same anywhere in the Safari Zone.

Now here is what you need to do to finish the Safari Zone and get all the items:

  • From the Entrance head to the top right hand exit into Area 1.
  • In Area 1, head right and north up the stairs. Continue north to find a Leaf Stone.
  • Head back to the stairs and this time head to the left and down the next set of stairs.
  • Head to the left and bit and up. To the right on the grassy peninsula near the water is TM11 - Sunny Day.
  • Leave the Peninsula and head north-west to find a Max Potion.
  • From the Max Potion head to the left and up the next set of stairs, to the right and down those stairs.
  • To the right of here is a rest house (nothing inside really) and below it a Full Restore. Head north from the trainer house and to the left.
  • When the route splits, take the bottom route still heading to the left into Area 2.
  • Continue left and go north up the first set of stairs you come across.
  • Follow the path and when you've gone down some stairs head to the left to collect Quick Claw.
  • Head back to the start of Area 2. If you head down you will be in the top part of the Entrance Area.
  • Nothing new here except if you come back with Surf. So instead, head to the northern part of the grass and head up the stairs.
  • Follow the path and down the next set of stairs.

**From here you can head south into Area 3. (You will probably need to enter once more to get these, because it is unlikely you can get to the final house if you go down this south route. So instead do the bits between the double stars in your next trip.) Continue south and then head to the left and collect the Max Revive. The head up the stairs and to the left. Follow the path and at the base of the next set of stairs is a Max Potion. Return to where you were before the stars.**

  • Head north, past the three pools and to the right a bit is TM47 - Steel Wing.
  • Continue to the right and then head up. Collect the Protein.
  • Now head west and all the way south down into Area 3.
  • From the teeth head to the left. South of the hut grab TM32 - Double Team.
  • Head inside the hut.

Talk to the man inside and he will give you HM03 - Surf. Now you have Surf, you can travel on water by pressing A next to a Surfable area. Now leave the Safari Zone. Now let's head to the Warden's house, the one to the right of the Pokecenter. Talk to the Warden Inside and give him his teeth. As thanks, he will give you HM04 - Strength. This can be used to move large boulders like the one in the Warden's house. Teach it to one of your Pokemon. move the boulder in his house and grab the Rare Candy.

Heal up and get ready for the next Gym Battle. When you're ready, head over to the gym. When you enter it looks relatively easy to get to the leader...however the walls are invisible. Here is a map showing the walls so you can navigate through the Gym:

The specialty in this gym is Poison, so let's try a few trainer battles first, starting with the bottom left and bottom right trainers:

Head to the right hand side of the gym and head up to fight the next two trainers:

When you get to the very top, head all the way to the left and down to fight the next two trainers:

Now onto the leader, Koga:

The biggest thing to watch out for in this battle is Toxic. This Poisons your Pokemon and the damage inflicted increases each turn. Be sure to stock up on Antidotes beforehand. If Toxic is getting the better of you, try inflicting a status effect on the opponent as soon as possible, this reduces the chance of a successful Toxic. You could also use a Poison type, which aren't affected by Toxic. I would strongly advise a Psychic type though as this is best against Poison. The two Koffing are nothing new and should be easy, however they have the Levitate ability so Ground attacks won't hit them at all. Muk has pretty good Spec. Def. and has pretty high Attack. Acid Armor boosts its Defense, but a Psychic type should mow him down pretty easy. If his Pokemon get low on health, Koga has a Full Heal and two Hyper Potions just to make things a bit harder.

Once you have the Tea, exit Celadon to the east. Now enter the house to the right with the guard, which have not allowed you to pass previously. Give him the Tea, and he will let you through. You can now enter Saffron City through any of the four guard houses. Leave the guard house to the right and enter Saffron City.

Center Area

Center Area (east)

safari zone cheats fire red

In the entrance gatehouse to the Safari Zone, pay the requisite ₽500 to enter and receive 30 Safari Balls before heading inside the Safari Zone proper.

In Yellow Version, if you bother the attendant here, he will allow you to enter the Safari Zone even if you don't have ₽500. Instead, he will take all your remaining money and give you a number of Safari Balls proportionate to the amount you paid, leaving you with a single Safari Ball if you have no money at all. It seems the developers did this to avoid an uncommon scenario that could prevent you from making any further progress in the game: if you have no money and no method of earning any more, you cannot enter the Safari Zone to obtain HM03 and the Gold Teeth, both necessary items to complete the game. No such check exists in Red and Blue, so it is quite possible, though extremely unlikely, to get yourself into this situation in those games.

Interestingly, there is an out-of-bounds hidden item inside the entry gatehouse. The Itemfinder will ping if you use it, but, unfortunately, there is no way to unearth the hidden Nugget in here.

Safari Zone mechanics You have a 500-step counter while inside the Safari Zone. Running out the counter will automatically return you to the entrance, as will running out of Safari Balls. Turning on the spot does not count as a step, but can still be used to trigger wild Pokémon battles. You are restricted to the 30 Safari Balls you bought when entering, and any unused Safari Balls are lost once the game is over. The Safari Zone also has different battling mechanics to the rest of the game. The Pokémon here do not attack you but have a nasty habit of running away from battle, and those with higher Speed stats are more likely to flee. Instead of sending out a Pokémon to fight, you're restricted to throwing rocks and bait, which affect the capture chance and fleeing chance of the target Pokémon. Each rock you throw at the wild Pokémon doubles the chance of catching it but also makes it angry for 1–5 turns, and an angry Pokémon is twice as likely to flee. Conversely, each thrown bait halves the chance of catching the Pokémon but also lulls it into an eating state for 1–5 turns, during which time it is four times less likely to flee. For all these unexplained mechanics, the strategy that gives you the best chance to capture a Pokémon on any given encounter is simply to throw Balls at it and ignore rocks and bait entirely. The only time you might ever want to consider rocks and bait is if you are running low on Balls, but you will be significantly reducing your capture chances if you do this. A little later on, Red and Blue players can take advantage of a glitch to bypass all these odd mechanics and catch Safari Zone Pokémon using standard battle mechanics. For a full breakdown of these mechanics, take a look at the Safari Zone mechanics section.

Center Area : Besides the tall grass, there isn't much of interest in the Center Area at the moment.

Pokémon evaluations Exeggcute ( evaluation ) — Rating: C . Though it will be underlevelled and belongs to the Slow experience group, Exeggcute has a nice Grass/Psychic typing and can evolve immediately into the powerful Exeggutor. It wants the Psychic TM to be truly effective, however. Rhyhorn ( evaluation ) — Rating: D . Another underlevelled Pokémon in the Slow experience group, Rhyhorn won't evolve until level 42. While its physical stats are incredible and its movepool is great, it requires a long grind to become powerful, and still has low Speed and Special. Chansey ( evaluation ) — Rating: D . Chansey isn't a bad Pokémon, but it is extremely difficult to catch. Its abysmally low Attack means it can't effectively use any STAB moves, but it does at least have a strong Special and a wide special movepool. Tangela ( evaluation ) — Rating: D . A rare Safari Zone encounter, Tangela has a terrible movepool consisting entirely of Grass- and Normal-type attacks. It lacks SolarBeam or even Petal Dance , and its Attack stat is too low to use Normal-type moves effectively. Dratini ( evaluation ) — Rating: D . Available for the first time in Yellow Version, though at the low level of 15, Dratini only evolves into its powerful final form at level 55. This is a long grind due to Dratini's low stats and Slow experience group.
In-game trade preparation To complete all in-game trades, Red and Blue players should catch a Nidorino to trade for a Nidorina on Route 11, while Yellow players should catch an extra Tangela to trade for a Parasect on Route 18. You'll be reminded shortly when to trade these in, although none of these trades is worth it for anything except completion purposes.

Head north-east and take the narrow eastern path into Center Area (east).

Center Area (east) : In this area, a few new Pokémon are available, though Kangaskhan is found in Area 2 in Yellow, while Tauros is found in Areas 2 and 3 in Red and Blue, being most common (though still very rare) in Area 3.

Pokémon evaluations Kangaskhan ( evaluation ) — Rating: D . Kangaskhan is a tough Normal-type Pokémon with good stats and an excellent movepool. However, it is also a rare Safari Zone-exclusive encounter that is likely to run away, making it extremely difficult to catch. Tauros ( evaluation ) — Rating: D . Tauros doesn't fair too well in-game largely because it's so rare and hard to catch, and then will be a little underlevelled. If you do get one, it's a strong Normal-type Pokémon with great Attack and Speed and a fantastic movepool.

Head east and climb the rocky plateau to the north. At the northern edge is a Carbos . Take the westernmost stairs down off this plateau and head north. A patch of land jutting into the central body of water has TM37 ( Egg Bomb ) on it.

TM37 can be bought infinitely at the Celadon Department Store and contains Egg Bomb, a mediocre Normal-type move with 100 power and 75% accuracy. It can only be learned by Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Chansey and Mew, which all have much better options.

To the north-west, you can pick up a Max Potion . Proceed east from there, using the small rocky plateau here to bypass the tree, and pick up the Full Restore on the other side. Finally, go up around the plateau to the west and take the western exit to Area 2.

Area 2 : Check if you have any new Pokémon available to you in Area 2 before continuing.

In-game trade preparation (Yellow) This is the only area in the game where Kangaskhan can be caught in Yellow Version, and you can catch a spare one to trade away for a Muk much later on. This isn't worth it for anything other than completion purposes.

Head west, ignoring the first staircase to the north and the path exiting south, and instead pass through the patch of tall grass to the north and take the set of stairs here. Come down off this rocky plateau using the stairs to the south-west, and then go as far north as you can. To the east from here is TM40 ( Skull Bash ).

TM40 is a one-time TM which teaches Skull Bash, a 130-power Normal-type move with the massive drawback of requiring a charge turn to execute. Pass.

Loop around the bushes to the north to find a Protein and continue west. Head all the way south and exit south into Area 3.

Area 3 : Pick up the Gold Teeth to the south, then head west and pick up TM32 ( Double Team ) in plain sight.

Using Double Team to ramp up your evade stat can be very useful if luck is on your side. After enough uses, it can feel almost impossible for your opponent to hit you, and with enough luck, it can be so good that it earned itself a ban from competitive matches. Still, it takes time to use it repeatedly over a few turns, and in-game you can often one-hit KO an opponent with supereffective hits. If you want game-breaking strategies, X Accuracy and one-hit KO moves are quicker and far superior. TM32 is also infinitely available to buy from the Celadon Department Store, so you can at least try it out without having to worry too much.

There is also a hidden Revive which is inside the nearby statue. Enter the Secret House by this statue and speak to the man inside to receive HM03 ( Surf ).

As well as being an HM move which allows you to travel over bodies of water on the overworld, Surf is an excellent Water-type move in its own right, being a little less powerful than its closest competition, Hydro Pump, in exchange for near-perfect accuracy and higher PP. It should be a staple move on any Water-type Pokémon for a strong and reliable STAB attack, though a handful of other Pokémon can learn it too. Its only downside is that once it is learned, it can't be forgotten short of trading the Pokémon to Gold, Silver or Crystal, so think carefully before teaching it.

If you have defeated the Fuchsia Gym Leader, you can now use Surf outside of battle after teaching it to a compatible Pokémon. Exit the Secret House and surf south over the small body of water here. Head south into the patch of tall grass and pick up the Max Potion a little to the east before climbing on to the rocky plateau. Head east and descend the other set of stairs here to pick up a Max Revive before exiting to the east.

Center Area : You'll emerge back into the west side of the Center Area. Head east and surf across the water to pick up the final item, a Nugget . That's all for the Safari Zone unless you want to catch any more Pokémon, so either exit to the south or, more likely, have the step counter run out to return to the entrance.

Link to area overview

Back in Fuchsia City, head for the Warden's house, which is the building directly east of the Pokémon Center. Now that you have the Gold Teeth, you can return them to the Warden to receive HM04 ( Strength ).

Strength is used on the field to push large boulders around, which will be needed to solve a few puzzles later on. In battle, it's an unremarkable 80-power Normal-type move that's outclassed by moves such as Body Slam. However, because it is an HM move, it can be taught infinitely, so if the TM for Body Slam has already been used up on a Pokémon, Strength is a reasonable alternative.

You can put Strength to work immediately and push the nearby boulder to one side so you can claim the Rare Candy .

Surf round-up With Surf now available to use outside of battle, a large portion of the game opens up to you. There are also some areas you have previously visited where you can now pick up new items and Pokémon. This guide will first take care of some in-game trades before continuing to the surf round-up.
Red/Blue in-game trade 6/9 : Nidorino ↔ Nidorina Red and Blue players should withdraw their Nidorino for this in-game trade before flying to Vermilion City and heading east on to Route 11. Proceed all the way east into the gatehouse, then head upstairs and talk to the young man by the window to trade your Nidorino away for a Nidorina.
Yellow in-game trade 3/7 : Tangela ↔ Parasect Yellow players can instead withdraw their Tangela for another rather pointless in-game trade. From Fuchsia City, take the western exit into the Route 18 gatehouse, then head upstairs and talk to the man here to trade Tangela away for a Parasect.

Surf on to the water directly south of the Pokémon Center. You'll spot two houses to the south. Surf in between them and examine the west side of the eastern house, on the tile closest to land, to find a hidden Max Ether .

Yellow players should now head to Route 6, just north of Vermilion City.

Pokémon evaluations Psyduck ( evaluation ) — Rating: D . This is the only place that Yellow players can catch a Psyduck or, rarely, its evolved form, Golduck. It'll be very underlevelled compared to the rest of your team but is otherwise a decent, if somewhat bland, Water-type Pokémon.
In-game trade preparation (Yellow) Catch a spare Golduck here if you can, even if it is rather rare, to trade away for a Rhydon later on. If you don't want to hunt for the rare Golduck, then alternatively you can get one by evolving a Psyduck, though you will have to train it from level 15 to level 33 to get it to evolve.

Make your way west from the Pokémon Center to the small pond in the centre of the city. Surf across and talk to the elderly lady on the other side to receive TM41 ( Softboiled ).

Softboiled can only be taught to Chansey and Mew. If you're using one of these two Pokémon, Softboiled has some utility for its out-of-battle effect, which transfers 20% of the user's HP to a chosen party Pokémon. Given Chansey's gargantuan HP, this can save you a few trips to the Pokémon Center. In battle, it's also useful for simply healing the user for 50% of its maximum HP, though using items is still superior without taking up a moveslot. TM41 is unique, but this isn't much of an issue as there is hardly any demand for it.

Fly to Lavender Town so you can head south into Route 12. Continue south, passing through the gatehouse, until you come to the first Fisherman. Just south from him on a small isolated section of land sits TM16 ( Pay Day ), which you can reach with Surf.

Pay Day is a weak 40-power Normal-type move without much battling use and generates money equal to twice the user's level whenever it hits the opponent. This isn't much, so it is not worth using up a moveslot for this. TM16 is unique, so use it carefully.

Pokémon evaluations Slowpoke ( evaluation ) — Rating: C . This marks the first opportunity for Yellow players to catch a Slowpoke, though higher-level ones are available later on at the Seafoam Islands. Water/Psychic typing is fantastic, but Slowpoke takes a lot of hits due to its abysmal Speed.

Now that you have Surf and have tidied up any previous areas, you can take a detour to pick up Zapdos, a level 50 dual-type Electric/Flying Legendary Pokémon. It's an excellent Pokémon, particularly if you don't have an Electric-type Pokémon on your team and have saved the Thunderbolt TM for it.

Purchase a handful of Ultra Balls and bring along a Pokémon that can put opponents to sleep, because Zapdos has a very low catch chance if it isn't inflicted with any status conditions. Freeze is equally good but far harder to inflict, while poison, burn and paralysis aren't quite as good but are still better than using no status condition at all. Also, make sure you have enough room in your PC Box for Zapdos and a handful of other wild Pokémon that you might be interested in.

Fly to Cerulean City and withdraw Pokémon that can use Surf and Cut. Head toward the eastern exit of the city by passing through the burgled house and using Cut on the bush before Route 9. Head all the way east through Route 9 on to Route 10, recognisable by a large patch of tall grass bordered by water on the north and east sides.

It might be worth healing up at the Pokémon Center just to the south here, which is the nearest one to the Power Plant but also cannot be accessed via Fly. This means that using Dig or an Escape Rope to leave the Power Plant will return you to this Pokémon Center, saving you the trek through Route 9 from Cerulean City.

Surf on to the water to the north and follow it around to the east and south. As it banks around to the west, you'll spot a PokéManiac (F) above you.

PokéManiac (F) Pokémon Type Lv. Exp. Moves Rhyhorn Ground/Rock 30 867 Horn Attack , Stomp HP: 92 , Attack: 61 , Defense: 66 , Speed: 24 , Special: 27 Lickitung Normal 30 816 Supersonic , Stomp , Disable , Defense Curl HP: 98 , Attack: 43 , Defense: 54 , Speed: 27 , Special: 45 Reward ₽1500

Just to the north-west of him is the entrance to the Power Plant, so head inside.
