Fast Travel (Skyrim)

  • Edit source

Fast Travel is a method of travel in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . It is a way of quickly "teleporting" to any previously discovered location . The travel takes place almost instantaneously in real-world time through a loading screen , but in game time will still pass by as if the Dragonborn had walked there. When using fast travel, the time elapsed may be longer than the time it would have taken to run to the destination, especially when the distance is short.

Fast Travel can be done via the world map or by using one of the carriages stationed near the main gate of many cities. Fast travel via world map is free, but can only be done to a location that has already been discovered. Travel via carriage is limited to major cities, regardless if they have been visited or not before, with a fee relative to distance and the size of the destination city (for example it costs more to travel from Whiterun to Dawnstar than from Windhelm to Solitude even though the distance between Windhelm and Solitude is greater). The Hearthfire DLC allows the Dragonborn to hire a carriage for their homestead , which will also go to smaller cities  and towns ( Darkwater Crossing , Dragon Bridge , Ivarstead , Karthwasten ,  Kynesgrove , Old Hroldan Inn , Riverwood , Rorikstead , Shor's Stone , and Stonehills ).

With Dawnguard , fast travel can also be done between Castle Volkihar and the main island of Skyrim by boat. With Dragonborn , the initial trip to Solstheim must be by boat. (Conventional fast travel can be used later, between the docks at Windhelm and Raven Rock .)

  • 1 Conditions
  • 2 Fast travel time

Conditions [ ]

The fast travel cannot be done while in any of the following conditions:

  • While indoors
  • While jumping
  • While falling
  • While mounting or dismounting a horse .
  • While being too close to enemies
  • While being pursued by enemies/ Hold Guards
  • While taking health damage (e.g. from poison )
  • Riding on horseback.
  • Under the effect of a Fortify Carry Weight potion that is strong enough. There is no limit on fast travel distance while the potion is in effect. However, the effect of the potion immediately wears off after the arrival causing the Dragonborn to be overburdened again.

Fast travel time [ ]

Approximate time to travel between cities/towns wearing Light Armor , measured by in-game hours:

  • The amount and type of armor worn affects how much time passes during fast travel.
  • Fast traveling while on foot or on horseback takes the same amount of time. The only difference will be how the Dragonborn arrives: on foot next to the horse, or on horseback.
  • Any positive or negative effects (such as from a disease ) will still progress during fast travel.
  • Neither the Dragonborn, their horse, or any companion will encounter any enemies during fast travel.
  • Due to the respawning of enemies , dragons and creatures being scripted to happen when fast travelling; if fast travel is never used, after a certain time, encounters with them will reduce noticeably.
  •  PC     360     PS3    When arriving at a location by fast travel, random creatures can spawn in front of the Dragonborn. For example, a non-hostile bandit might spawn every time they fast-travel, who can be talked to but will become hostile if attacked. A similar bug happens when fast-traveling to Falkreath , causing all of the Hold Guards to spawn at the entrance to the city.
  •  PC    Fast traveling with followers to northern cities like Windhelm or the College of Winterhold can trigger a sliding effect on arrival. Normally, this effect is not critical; however, it is possible to sometimes slide for a very long distance and fall from a cliff.
  •  360    After waiting in a location for a long time (two or three weeks), or if multiple other characters have been played before returning to play as the affected character, fast traveling to a location might spawn enemies that have made into thralls (or raised as zombies) in the past. They will attack each other unless they are in the same faction. (Only bandits or spiders, for example).
  •  360     PS3    If fast travel is selected to any location and the back button is immediately pressed, the fast travel will not occur, the game will no longer be paused and the character menu will not be able to be opened. The pause menu can be opened, but saving the game will be the only option that functions, not loading an existing save. The "quit game" option is available, however, allowing a more time consuming reload of the game by saving and exiting the game. Reloading the game will fix this.
  •  360 (Fix)     PS3 (Fix)    Manually shut down the console, as any attempt to open the Xbox or PS3 menu will result in the loading circles on every option and they will never load.
  •  PC     360    Fast traveling on horseback to the College of Winterhold may cause one to appear several feet above the bridge.
  •  PC (Fix)    Quickly Fast traveling to another place before the horse falls off may solve the problem.
  •  PC     360     PS3    Sometimes, when attempting to fast travel, the game will say "You cannot fast travel while guards are pursuing you," even if guards are not pursuing the Dragonborn.
  •  360     PS4    Fast traveling from a snowy location can sometimes cause it to snow in areas that do not normally experience snowy weather conditions.
  •  PC (Fix)    Fast traveling to any location will fix this.
  •  PC (Fix)    Exiting the game to the desktop restarting will fix this.
  • By opening the Journal and pressing the "show on map" button for quest objectives it is possible to access the map, and thus fast travel even under circumstances that normally prevent access to the map, such as after the Dragonborn dies or at the beginning of the game while Helgen is under attack.

Skyrim:Transport

skyrim fast travel or not

There are multiple methods of transport in Skyrim.

  • 1.1 Movement Speeds by Method and Conditions
  • 3 Dragon Riding DB
  • 4 Horse Riding
  • 6.1 Dead Man's Dread CC
  • 7 Fast Travel

Walking, Running, Strafing and Sprinting [ edit ]

Walking is the slowest speed at which you will normally move. To walk, use the movement control appropriate for your platform. You cannot move faster than at a walking pace while you are overencumbered .

You will generally spend most of your time moving at a moderate run ; running uses no stamina . You can also strafe or sidestep using the left or right "move" commands.

Sprint by holding the sprint control key (or toggle on/off for the Special Edition ). Sprinting is significantly faster than running. As it consumes stamina, you can only sprint for a limited distance. You will generally exhaust your stamina more quickly when sprinting in heavy armor or when wielding a heavy weapon.

Walking or running backwards is slower than going forwards, and you cannot sprint backwards or sideways.

Movement Speeds by Method and Conditions [ edit ]

Falling [ edit ].

Also see information on falling , which can hurt or kill you.

Dragon Riding DB [ edit ]

As part of the Dragonborn DLC, you can ride a dragon once you have acquired all three words of the Bend Will shout. For more information see Dragon Riding .

As you cannot steer a dragon while riding it, the main functionality of this method of transportation is for fast travel .

Horse Riding [ edit ]

You can travel much faster on horseback than on foot. You can also ride a horse while overencumbered for normal or fast travel. For complete information see Horses .

Carriage [ edit ]

Carriages will carry you between the nine capital cities of each hold in Skyrim for 20–50 gold. They are the fastest means to get to cities which you have not yet discovered - although in the plain game, they are only available in the five major hold capitals: the four smaller hold capitals can be the destination but not the origin of a carriage journey.

The fare to the five larger hold capitals of Markarth , Riften , Solitude , Whiterun , and Windhelm costs 20 gold, whereas going to the four smaller hold capitals of Dawnstar , Falkreath , Morthal , and Winterhold costs 50 gold.

With the Hearthfire add-on , homestead carriages also provide transport from the three homesteads to Darkwater Crossing , Dragon Bridge , Ivarstead , Karthwasten , Kynesgrove , Old Hroldan Inn , Riverwood , Rorikstead , Shor's Stone , and Stonehills . There is no charge for these services beyond the initial cost of hiring the carriage driver.

When first arriving at one of the five major hold capitals, you can speak with the carriage operator for some local information. Carriages will not operate when you are overencumbered .

The carriage drivers are:

  • Alfarinn ( Windhelm )
  • Bjorlam ( Whiterun )
  • Engar ( Windstad Manor ) HF
  • Gunjar ( Lakeview Manor ) HF
  • Kibell ( Markarth )
  • Markus ( Heljarchen Hall ) HF
  • Sigaar ( Riften )
  • Thaer ( Solitude )

Ferrymen DG [ edit ]

Three ferrymen are added by the Dawnguard add-on and can transport you between three coastal cities for 50 gold, or to Icewater Jetty for 500 gold. You can also take a self-service ferry between Icewater Jetty and Volkihar Keep .

With the Bittercup Creation , you may have to ask Harlaug to bring you to the island of Giant's Tooth . He will continue to offer transport to the remote island for 50 gold.

  • Gort ( Windhelm )
  • Harlaug ( Dawnstar )
  • Jolf ( Solitude )

skyrim fast travel or not

Dead Man's Dread CC [ edit ]

With the Dead Man's Dread Creation , you will have the opportunity to acquire the Dead Man's Dread , an ancient pirate ship that serves as a player home . Once you have claimed the ship as your own, a map inside allows for instant sea transportation. This map will bring you to Solitude, Dawnstar, or Windhelm. You will also unlock the ability to travel to Volkihar Keep (or rather, Icewater Jetty) and Raven Rock once you have discovered these places. This mode of travel is one-way.

Fast Travel [ edit ]

You can fast travel from any exterior location to any location marked on your in-game map and which you have discovered (visited). Discovered locations are indicated on your map or compass with light-colored markers. Dark-colored markers, on the other hand, are places you have had marked on your map but have not yet discovered yourself, and therefore are not available for fast travel. Although fast travel transports you "instantly", a more "realistic" amount of game time will have passed upon arrival; however, such elapsed travel times are the same whether on foot or horseback.

With the Dragonborn expansion, fast traveling while riding a dragon transports you almost instantly in game time.

You cannot fast travel when near any hostile enemies, when overencumbered (unless you are on a horse), nor when falling, jumping, or during the animation of mounting a horse. Fast travel is totally disabled when playing in Survival Mode , except while riding a dragon.

Skyrim – How to Fast Travel Between Towns, Cities, and More

How to Fast Travel – Skyrim

Fast travelling is going to be your best friend in Skyrim. The world is massive, and you’ll be juggling a ton of quests constantly sending you to each corner of it. To make sure you don’t waste your life running around the map, here’s how to fast travel and save yourself a lot of headaches.

First, you’ll need to make sure you’re outside. You won’t be able to fast travel inside a cave, building, or other structure. Next, make sure you aren’t in combat and that there aren’t any enemies nearby. You won’t be able to fast travel unless you’re safe. And last up on the warnings list, you cannot fast travel if you’re overburdened, or carrying more in item weight than the max capacity your stamina affords you.

Then, pull out your map. Hit Circle on PlayStation and B on Xbox to bring up your menu, then hit the down button to head to your map. Move your cursor over a landmark you’ve visited at least once before, be it a city, a cave, or other notable location. Select this, and choose to fast travel there at the prompt. You’ll then find yourself magically teleported to your desired spot.

Fast Travel

  • VisualEditor

Fast Travel is available from the world map . On the map, dark markers indicate locations you know about but have not yet visited, while light markers indicate locations you have discovered. Select any light marker to travel there.

You cannot fast travel from interiors or while in combat . While fast travelling, time moves forward depending on how far you go. If you have a horse, it will fast travel with you. If you fast travel to a city, your horse will be placed in the nearest stable.

The name of this method of transportation can be misleading as within the game, the time taken to reach the destination is not any shorter, it only appears instantaneous to the player.

How to Unlock The Viper Job in FF14 Dawntrail

How to unlock the pictomancer job in ff14 dawntrail, final fantasy 14: dawntrail is changing a controversial game mechanic.

For Skyrim fans who feel they may be using fast travel a little too much, a mod for the game adds some limitations to the feature which can force the Dragonborn to stop and smell the digital roses. With its high fantasy setting, complete with a vast open world for exploration, not to mention affording the chance to fight ancient dragons, TES5 is truly one for the ages and is even considered an RPG suitable for newcomers to the genre.

Part of what makes the game so accessible is that it gives players the option to fast travel, whereby they can instantly move between already discovered locations at whim. While fast travel is important in many open-world titles , there are some who feel it can interrupt the more immersive role-playing elements. As such, there are a number of players who choose to not use it, but for those who can't help themselves and don't want to switch to Survival Mode, there is a way to stem this temptation.

As spotted by PC Gamer, Nexus Mods user digitalApple released "Regional Fast Travel," a mod for Skyrim that changes the way this travelling feature works. According to the description, fast travel can be disabled if the location a player wants to travel to is in a different region, is not considered a "habitation or dwelling," or the area has not been assigned any data that makes it a "location" as such. There are also some additional rules that can be enabled, such as not being able to fast travel to the College of Winterhold until completing the "First Lessons" quest, as well as stipulations for other guilds and factions.

Given such limitations, it almost puts Skyrim on par with the third entry in the Bethesda franchise, Morrowind . That game too had limitations when it came to fast travel, such as having to use transportation to and from settlements, forcing players to wander the land by foot as the game had no horses to speak of. Fortunately, as Morrowind is one of the smallest Elder Scrolls releases in terms of map size , this was less daunting than in other entries in the series.

In any case, it shows that people like digitalApple are still giving a lot of love to TES5 . Over the years, modders have attempted to improve on Skyrim 's vanilla format , adding so much more to the already expansive title. It's one of the reasons the epic RPG is still going strong to this day.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - Anniversary Edition is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

skyrim fast travel or not

Another noob question.I was wondering if it's better to fast travel or not seeing that you level up through taking on enemies which seem would appear more often if the player did not fast travel.Would like to know if experienced skyrim players suggest fast traveling or not. Thanks in advance.

Well, it depends. If you want to train, I wouldn't recommend doing it while you walk somewhere, especially if you're doing something important (like going to a main quest). If you want to train, I highly recommend going to a dungeon that you think you can handle and beating up all the enemies inside. Fast travel whenever you can, it's safer and quicker. If you're starting out, you won't be able to fast travel, but you'll still want a fast, safe journey, won't you? I recommend visiting the major cities before you do most major things, but still while you have some good armour and weapons. If you're Argonian, river-travel if you like. Your only dangers are slaughterfish, and the flow takes you along so you don't have to do ANYTHING.

You miss more than you may realize fast traveling, especially as a new character attempting to get money. When you travel, you cross herbs. Hundreds and hundreds of herbs! Stacks, and piles and mounds and scads of herbs! Alchemy is the single most lucrative cash-cow at the lower end of the level spectrum, your afternoon constitutional will give you enough materials to make shelves and shelves of potions to sell! Then there's combat skill ups and hides/ore for smithing. There are also random encounters in the world that you'll miss out on if you fast travel absolutely everywhere. The old orc looking for an honorable death, the Redguard mercenaries shaking down every Redguard woman they come across, the distraught villager escaping the bandit camp, the poor boy set out to collect the escaped pit-wolves. And my personal favorite, the bandits impersonating an Imperial Patrol..poorly. All kinds of fun little encounters.

Personally I prefer not to fast travel as it adds to the experience. I can't tell you how much more I have discovered since I stopped fast traveling. Makes the game more exciting. The only time I fast travel now is when I'm tired and I'm just trying to finish my current quest before I call it a night.

Michaelgamet

PelagiusIV <-- I was going to say that, it's got more to do with the outside world, if you are getting something done before going to bed, or leaving for work. Otherwise if you have time, take the time to see the countryside. Spoiler once you go to the Rift you can find a way to get a free horse, if you work it right. Work on getting stamina regen gear so while you run around, you can use sprint more often. If you have a horse, those random encounter sometimes make him run off, you can use detect life to find him again. It's not a low level spell though.. it's saved me time and time again.

Mini Mongo

Drog Do Faal Mongonite Lahvu

Don't fast travel. You miss funny encounters, herbs, treasure, side quests, more herbs, and it adds to the experience. I personally prefer to act as if I am my character, I search everything as much as possible, take things slow, read books, practice magicka at the College of Winterhold, to small quests and never fast travel. All of this makes you feel as if you are there, and for your obsessive Skyrim, that is what it is all about, playtime and the feeling of being there. Of course, if you are, like a very high community, someone who does the main quest and then say they have completed the game at 30 hours, when they have missed out 470 hours, then don't.

Oh .. BTW don't fast travel the day before your wedding! lol She knows, you don't need to go get her. Failed: Attend your Wedding. I still have trouble finding my way around Skyrim. Seems like the signs for getting from city to city are too vague. I end up cutting through the rocks and bushes.. and this always leads to encounters with wildlife and Giants. I last tried to take road from Whiterun to Morthal, I had the hardest time.

I found that entering, exiting a city (via their gate's), or out of a Jarl's place to stop and listen to the guard's. They always have a bit of something that will update your map, and give you another place to loot and level up. I also try to carry as little as I can (Mjoll the Lioness from Riften is a "mule" for packing loot), and bring a pick along when I walk or quest as there are many kind's of ore to get, turn into ingot's and make into armor. When I can, I also DE some thing's I loot just to move up my enchantment skill, depending on the price of the item (which generally shows more than what you'll get until you get your Speechcraft up). Also, when you go to the village to begin your trek up High Hrothgar, there's an NPC who will pay well for bear pelt's. There's a lot of advantages to fast travel, and some disadvantages. Sometimes it takes just as long to fast travel than as it does to run. Wolves, Saber Cat's and Bear's are good to make Hide Armor to sell. You also miss a lot of eye candy if you fast travel, not to mention very possible ambushes by Dragon's when you appear at your destination via fast travel.

Tilse

I try to only fast travel when doing quests that require locks of back and forth or backtracking. Otherwise I'm focusing more on discovering areas, meaning I'll be fighting enemies along the way as well. It also helps since now I'm hunting more animals, thus getting more hides/materials I need for smithing, which beats having to buy the stuff.

Twiffle

in the past i have always fast traveled and yes i have missed some gems, my current build i have just started does do some but only strictly to stables and by carriage only, so if i want to get to Morthal i have to walk from Solitude and Falkreath from whiterun or markarth etc. only problem i find when i walk is wieght, i end up with so much but only third of the way there, i never have a follower, but thats another thread -

Gowsh

If you have the time available IRL, a stroll in Skyrim is almost always pleasant or interesting or pleasantly annoying. Just admiring the scenery works for me most of the time. Even on paths you've traversed before, new stuff occasionally pops up,

DdraigGwyn

I have decided that fast travel really should be a skill in the Magic set. As it is, the process doesn't really fit with the rest of the game: being able to travel to any site you have been, without interacting with anything along the way, seems odd unless it really is a magical power. I would like to see it as a skill that you can improve like any other. At the start of the game you can only fast travel to the closest Hold that you have already visited . The Perk tree could add increased distance, a wider variety of targets that you can reach and maybe at the 100 level, the ability to Fast travel from inside buildings or caves. I would also make cart travel much more expensive and the price be proportional to the distance traveled.

What do I do If I'm unable to fast travel due to being stuck in combat in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim?

If you are unable to fast travel due to being in combat, first make sure that there are no enemies near your character by looking for red dots on your compass or enter a nearby building. If there are no enemies nearby, try loading an earlier save.

You can follow the steps below to help prevent this issue from happening again:

  • We generally suggest making fairly frequent saves and alternate save game slots. This way, if one save game file goes bad, you can use one of your other recently saved games.
  • We also suggest copying any save games to an external memory device, if available, each day to keep a backup copy.
  • Avoid saving on top of the same save repeatedly.
  • Avoid using glitches or cheats in game.
  • Tweak your saves to not be auto-saving and do only manual saves, however, this runs the risk of not saving and losing process.

  1. Is not fast traveling really worth it? : r/skyrim

No, it's not worth avoiding fast travel. Like Oblivion before it, Skyrim was quite clearly designed with fast travel in mind. On the other hand, ignoring the carriages and walking to new places to get the fast travel points is definitely a lot more fun. Reply reply. Thatbastardson.
