STA Travel goes into administration with travellers still trying to get refunds

An empty airport passenger counter.

Thousands of travellers who booked holidays before the coronavirus pandemic are now in limbo after student travel agency STA went into administration.

Key points:

  • All 27 STA outlets are "closed for the foreseeable future"
  • Customers are being advised to contact airlines, hotel companies and banks about refunds
  • The business employs 180 full-time employees

Deloitte joint voluntary administrator Jason Tracy said they were undertaking an "urgent assessment" of the company's financial position and exploring whether a global restructure or business sale could be achieved.

"COVID-19 has brought the travel industry in Australia close to a standstill," Mr Tracy said.

All 27 STA Travel stores across Australia will be closed for the foreseeable future.

The company currently employs 180 full-time staff across the country.

"We appreciate this will be a stressful time for all involved, and in particular customers and employees," Mr Tracy said.

"We will be communicating with them as soon as possible as we assess and understand the situation, and options going forward."

Customers affected by the announcement are advised to contact their airlines and hotels regarding the status of their bookings, as well as their banks and credit card companies, but some are struggling to get their money back.

Brisbane-based Trinity Rafferty had booked a four-week holiday to Europe with her husband in September 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Ms Rafferty said she was "absolutely gutted".

"We're not made of money. We did everything, we saved like mad," she said.

"We paid cash for everything. We didn't put anything on credit because we had the money there. Biggest mistake we could have ever made."

Ms Rafferty said she had been trying to get a refund of more than $10,000 after Australian Government travel restrictions were introduced in March, but was only offered a credit.

She said she was only offered a "blue voucher" valid for 12 months after her original holiday plans, despite paying full price for a refundable ticket.

"How dare this company say, we signed up with terms and conditions saying that if anything happened, if we cancelled within a certain amount of time, that we would actually get a full refund," Mrs Rafferty said.

"But now they've done this and now they're saying that, 'no, we're not going to give you a refund', and they're holding our money ransom."

'It's a lot of money just to say bye to'

Vanessa Churches has a similar story. She had booked a holiday to the US with her husband and in-laws.

Ms Churches said she was trying to recoup $22,000 from STA Travel and was also offered store credit.

"It's a lot of money just to say bye to," Mrs Churches said.

She said her in-laws were depending on the refunded money to fund their retirement and that she had postponed IVF plans because of the uncertainty.

Ms Churches said she had lost contact with her store representative in the past 24 hours.

"I think [we were] all a bit stressed out yesterday when we heard about it and not being able to contact anyone," she said.

The ABC has reached out to STA Travel for comment.

Mr Tracy said the announcement was a result of reduced demand for travel because of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

"The collapse of STA Travel in Australia and New Zealand is certainly related to trading conditions caused by the pandemic, and has been preceded by its Swiss holding company recently filing for insolvency," Mr Tracey said.

The travel industry has been hit hard by COVID-19, with Virgin Australia entering administration earlier this year and Qantas this week announcing a $2 billion loss .

With international borders closed, Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham urged Australians to go on domestic holidays to try to pump some money back into the ailing industry, but Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce criticised border closures between states that are making that difficult.

"We don't have clear guidelines for when the borders will open, when they will close," he said.

"So we have this situation where there are large numbers of states and territories that have zero cases and they're not even open to each other."

"It feels like there are no reality-based decisions, it's just maybe the politics, and we think that will cost jobs and [cause] businesses, particularly a lot of the small businesses in Queensland, to go out of business," he added.

"We need to get people back in jobs, otherwise we're going to have a cliff that's going to be bigger than the financial impact that COVID-19 has already caused."

Aussies lose $20,000 and $34,000 dream holidays as STA Travel goes bust

Australians who have paid up to $20,000 and $34,000 for dream holidays have lost their hard-earned savings after industry giant STA Travel became the latest victim of the coronavirus pandemic.

The travel agency has closed 27 Australian stores and 180 staff are now out of a job after administrators were called in.

With the company facing financial difficulty, STA Travel has left behind a trail of unhappy customers who don't have much hope of ever seeing their hard-earned cash again.

sta travel australien

One customer devastated by the news is Vanessa Churchas, who has now lost $20,000 she borrowed from her in-laws for a family trip to the US.

"I'm owed just under $20,000. We are so upset and angry and frustrated right now," Ms Churchas told A Current Affair.

"Also that was the money they were hoping to get back to use for their retirement. They actually used their super to be able to pay for this holiday, so this was their retirement money.

"Like we're not the kind of people that can just give up five, 10, 15, 20 thousand dollars.

"So, as you can imagine it's very stressful right now, we really don't know what's happening with any of the money."

sta travel australien

Fresh out of school, India Kidd and her boyfriend John had their big European adventure all planned.

"We worked so hard for this and we wanted it to go towards a trip of a lifetime," Ms Kidd said.

The young couple handed over their savings to STA Travel and like so many others they have now spent months pushing for a refund after COVID-19 caused the cancellation of their travel plans.

The pair handed over $34,000 to the travel agent and then reluctantly settled for a credit note in lieu of a refund. But after news that the company is in administration, with no hope of redeeming their credit note they want their money back.

"We're young, we weren't just handed this money, we worked so hard for this," Ms Kidd said.

"Me and my boyfriend both got two jobs, we were working probably 60 hours a week, he was doing landscaping and doing Coles of a night-time, we were just working our f-----n arses off just to be able to afford this trip.

sta travel australien

"I have emailed their head office, we were on hold for five hours yesterday to them and just nothing, literally nothing."

Trinity Rafferty was supposed to be celebrating her husband's 50th birthday in Europe but instead their suitcases are empty and they're out of pocket $10,000.

"We had booked to go to France, Italy and the Mediterranean for four weeks," Ms Rafferty said.

To add insult to injury Ms Rafferty says STA Travel were still chasing her for money only a few weeks ago and all customers claim they only learned about the company going bust via social media.

sta travel australien

Now the fate of their money lies in the hands of the administrators, Deloitte, which says it's commenced an urgent assessment of the financial position of the company.

Ms Churchas is still hopeful that her in-law's money will be returned.

"I don't want to say goodbye to money because I'm having faith that we will get it back," she said.

sta travel australien

Insolvency lawyer Michael Lalji from Shine Lawyers says there are few hopes for those who have lost their money.

"The practical reality is that when a company goes into administration it is the end of the road for customers and creditors," he said.

"Customers who've lost 10, 20, $35,000 are typically going to receive very little of their money back in either a liquidation or deed of company arrangement."

Deloitte said: "While the Administrators have been investigating options for customers to recover moneys paid for bookings, they are not confident that significant recoveries will be possible.

"Given the situation, customers holding bookings should contact their airline or hotel regarding the status of their bookings. They can also consider contacting their credit card provider or bank."

Jason Tracy, Joint Voluntary Administrator and Deloitte Restructuring Services partner

COVID-19 has brought the travel industry in Australia and globally close to a standstill.

The collapse of STA Travel in Australia and NZ is certainly related to trading conditions caused by the pandemic, and has been preceded by its Swiss holding company recently filing for insolvency.

We are undertaking an urgent assessment of the financial position of the Group's business to consider options that may be available, however these are extremely limited at the moment.

We appreciate this will be a stressful time for all involved, and in particular customers and employees.

We have notified creditors, including customers where we have been able to access their details, of the first meeting of creditors.

Regrettably, options for customers at present are limited to what they might be able to achieve via airlines, tourism operators as well as banks and credit card providers.

Customers should refer to www.deloitte.com/au/STATravelGroupAU for future updates and also email [email protected] , particularly if they wish to submit a proof of debt.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

sta travel australien

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

sta travel australien

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

sta travel australien

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

sta travel australien

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

sta travel australien

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

sta travel australien

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

sta travel australien

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
