ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS

SVALBARD 2023

Arctic expedition Svalbard

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE THE ARCTIC, Svalbard, its animals and nature up close. North of Norway, not far from the North Pole, we find Spitsbergen and the mythical archipelago of Svalbard. Visiting the high Arctic with its untouched nature is a magical experience. The adventure of a lifetime?

JOIN FREDRIK GRANATH, MELISSA SCHÄFER AND EXPEDITIONSRESOR on an expedition into the extreme wilderness of Svalbard. The goal of our expedition is to experience the dramatic scenery and all the amazing wildlife around Svalbard.

WINTER AND SPRING IS A MAGICAL TIME OF YEAR around Svalbard and Spitsbergen. The landscapes are covered in snow and there is plenty of drift ice in the fjords and areas surrounding the islands. Our ship handles these conditions well and we will travel far out into the most remote and unique areas where we best can experience the Arctic nature and its impressive wildlife, of course including the polar bear. Hopefully we also encounter other animals, like walrus, seals, birds, and when we’re on land: arctic fox and reindeer.

In March and April, after months of polar night, a world of ice comes out of darkness and the days quickly become longer. From the middle of March we have plenty of daylight and the sunsets color the snow covered landscapes and frozen fjords, shifting from dark blue, to pink, violet, red and orange.

In May, spring is beginning to embrace the Arctic and the midnight sun shines around the clock. The landscapes are still covered in snow and there is usually plenty of drift ice in the fjords and areas surrounding the islands.

ON OUR CHARMING EXPEDITION SHIP M/S FREYA we are comfortably accommodated. During the days, when conditions allow, we leave the ship with our three zodiacs to cruise around for even closer contact with the amazing life and nature, like ice bergs and glaciers, or take a walk on land or the ice. The meals onboard are prepared by our Swedish chef, and when it’s possible we can also enjoy a late-night barbeque on land or on deck. If someone would like to take a cool swim in the Arctic Ocean there’s a sauna on board where you can get warm afterwards.

M/S FREYA IS THE BEST EXPEDITION SHIP IN THE ARCTIC in our opinion. She is small enough to get close to animals and nature without disturbing, but she also has the strength and power to force her way through close drift ice in a safe way. The ship is newly renovated with spacious twin cabins, a comfortable lounge, a large upper deck with an amazing 360° view of our surroundings, and everything we need for a relaxing and exciting expedition.

WHEN WE ARE NOT EXPLORING THE NATURE outside the ship, we enjoy the comfort on deck, looking for polar bears, whales, seals and other animals, or relax in the cozy lounge.

The adventure of a lifetime?

 OUR SHIP M/S FREYA

M/S Freya is in our opinion the best expedition ship in the Arctic. She was originally built for the Swedish Maritime Administration in 1981 and was later taken over by the Swedish Coast Guard. She has been used as an environmental protection vessel as well as for research and science expeditions. In 2015 she was converted to an Arctic expedition ship and came to Svalbard for the first time in the summer of 2016. In 2018 Freya was acquired by Edvin Vidarsson and the Skattegården farm in Sweden.

Freya is built to Lloyd’s class for unrestricted trade and has the highest ice class 1A. She has capacity for up to 26 passengers in seven newly built twin cabins and four triple cabins. On this expedition we only bring 18 passengers, to make it as spacious and comfortable for everyone as possible. We also have three zodiacs (small rubber boats) on the ship, which we use as often we can when conditions allow it for exploring the surroundings more closely.

M/S Freya has a spectacular deck with a 360-degree view, a large dining room, a nice lounge and a cozy sauna where you can warm yourself after the day’s adventures. Travelling with only 18 passengers makes it feel more like being on a private yacht rather than a bigger expedition ship. We have an experienced crew of eight people plus three guides on board, everyone ready to assist and make the most out of our expedition.

 DAY TO DAY PROGRAM

ARRIVAL IN THE ARCTIC In the afternoon we board our ship at the harbor in Longyearbyen. We meet the crew and have a safety briefing while we begin cruising out of Adventfjorden via Isfjorden out into the Arctic wilderness. We settle in on the ship and in our cabins. During the evening we eat a welcome dinner, socialize and enjoy the magnificent glaciers and mountains pass by as we travel towards the land of the polar bear. Magic is ahead.

EXPLORING THE ARCTIC WILDERNESS Travelling through the drift ice, our exact route will be decided by ice and weather conditions. Our goal is to explore and experience as much as possible of what the Arctic has to offer and encounter the impressive wildlife, of course hopefully also the King of the Arctic: the polar bear. When conditions allow, we get into our zodiacs to cruise around and perhaps go on land or ice. We will most likely travel to the fjords Fuglefjorden and Raudfjorden on the north side of Spitsbergen where we should encounter the edge of the North Pole pack ice. Later in the week we travel down south on Spitsbergen’s west coast to Bellsund and Hornsund. In September, with less ice, we are more likely to travel further east and north in the archipelago during the week.

BYE BYE ARCTIC After a last breakfast together on the ship it is time to leave. There is time to explore the village some more and perhaps shop some souveniers for friends and family back home.

Please note: Our exact route and travel plans are depending on weather and ice conditions and where we expect the best opportunities at the time of our expedition. We will do everything possible to make the most out of our Arctic adventure. Flexibility is the key to a successful expedition!

During our expeditions we typically encounter polar bears and other wildlife, such as seals, walrus, foxes, as well as in summer-autumn also some whales. And of course always the magical scenery of Svalbard. There are never any guarantees for anything up here though. But we do know one thing: it will be amazing. It always is, and every expedition is unique and unlike the others.

Nature is the boss. And that is what makes this a true adventure.

OBSERVE TO PROTECT

The far north is an ecosystem in perfect balance when it has the cold and the ice it needs, but every single degree of warming has huge consequences, and this makes it extremely vulnerable. The high Arctic offers some of Earth’s most extreme conditions and it inhibits some of the strongest, most powerful wildlife. At the same time it is the most fragile place you can imagine.

All human activity leaves footprints, also this trip. On our expeditions everything happens on the terms of Svalbard’s environment and wildlife. If anything we do comes at a cost for these, we do all we humanly can to avoid it. We never disturb wildlife knowingly. If an animal seems affected by our presence we always back off and retreat. When an animal changes its behaviour because of us, we have failed. Being quiet and avoiding disturbance is a much easier task on our small ship with only 18 guests than the big ones, with dozens or hundreds of passengers.

By visiting the Arctic we leave footprints. And travelling with a ship, we can not avoid emitting greenhouse gases. We and the owners of M/S Freya are completely committed to minimizing our emissions. We look at all aspects of these operations, big and small. All from what fuel is used to the products used on board and what food is served. We are constantly looking at ways to improve our operations.

M/S Freya is owned by Edvin Vidarsson and his family who also are running Skattegården, a beautiful farm in Sweden. They have an amazing focus on environmentally friendly production and work for a sustainable future. The ship and the farm is part of the same concept. For example, the goal is to have as much as possible of the food served on board produced by the farm. Locally produced and served in the north! This way of working and forward way of thinking makes us very proud to work with Edvin, M/S Freya and Skattegården.

We also calculate all carbon emissions created during this trip, not only from the ship, but from our guests’ flights to Svalbard as well. And we carbon offset (climate compensate) everything connected with this expedition. Our goal is to over-compensate up to at least 120% - to give more than we take to our planet. This is not a perfect system, but it does help.

We follow all national and international laws and regulations as well as the guidelines set up by The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO). But we also have our own guidelines to follow in situations when they are more strict.

The number one priority for this expedition is to safeguard the place and life we are here to observe. The goal is to learn about the Arctic, its environment and wildlife by experiencing it close at firsthand.

Why Join a Svalbard Cruise with Aurora Expeditions?

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the High Arctic between mainland Norway and the North Pole. A destination of a lifetime, our Svalbard cruises and expeditions connect you to the majesty of this Arctic wilderness, where dramatic fjords, rugged mountain ranges and a fossil-rich polar desert await.

Overhead, puffins, guillemots and other native Svalbard avian circle, commanding your attention, while the scree slopes house the island’s largest little auk colony. On our Svalbard expeditions, you can expect to witness walruses puncturing the ice, beluga whales swimming alongside the boat or fluffy Arctic foxes hunting in the snow. Svalbard is also the kingdom of the polar bear – you might spot one of these majestic, elusive creatures if you’re lucky. All the Arctic wildlife found here leaves a lasting impression.

The polar summer spans from May to September, when the Midnight Sun’s endless daylight, beautiful colours and striking contrasts add an extra dimension to Svalbard’s glaciers, sea ice, majestic mountains and Arctic tundra. Summertime, when the Midnight Sun shines over the Arctic, is the best time to enjoy outside exploration and take in this frozen land. The polar winter season makes up the rest of the year and features the polar night or endless night. This is when the sun never “rises” and it remains dark throughout the day – it’s the perfect backdrop to see the Northern Lights in Svalbard.

Svalbard is large and diverse, showcasing nature’s surprisingly rich and varied landscapes. Life may be perceived as harsh, but for those fortunate enough to live here, it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else. Its inhabitants strive to live as one with nature, working in harmony to uphold their unique way of life throughout the enormous seasonal variations in temperature, light and darkness.

Svalbard Wildlife Encounters

Wildlife sightings peak with the return of migratory birds to the sea cliffs of Svalbard in the summer months. However, the opportunity to see the King of the Arctic, the polar bear, is a major highlight of most Svalbard tours. Polar bears are strongly connected to the sea and ice, as this is where their major food source lives. This means our expedition cruise often hugs the Svalbard coastline where more polar bears are known to live and roam. In the summer months, polar bear sightings occur the most in the north and eastern areas of the island and in front of glaciers while they hunt for seals.

Our world-class expedition teams include naturalists who will educate you on the polar regions and the other Arctic wildlife found in Svalbard. Some of the most common Arctic wildlife sightings include the Arctic fox, Svalbard reindeer, bearded seals, ring seals, beluga whales, narwhals if you’re lucky and a large variety of Arctic birds including Atlantic puffins.

Bird sanctuaries are common in Svalbard and the bird population reflects this. Arctic birds nest here in the summer months when the weather conditions are perfect. The cliffs and mountains protect the birds from the cold winds of the Arctic Ocean and polar regions.

Unique Svalbard Experiences

Visit Svalbard with Aurora Expeditions and participate in a number of activities unique to the High Arctic. Our Svalbard cruises provide a mix of comfort and adventure, and for those willing to explore this Arctic archipelago the memories will last a lifetime. Participate in a polar plunge  –  something most tourists look forward to when they visit Svalbard  –  or go Zodiac cruising to access parts of the coastline that your ship can’t.

Our Svalbard cruises include trips ashore where your Expedition Team will take you on walks to look for wildlife and if the chance arises take photos of the Arctic fox, Svalbard reindeer and maybe even the King of the Arctic, the polar bear, if you’re lucky. Our experienced Expedition Teams know Svalbard well and safety is always the number one priority.

For those looking for even more adventure, Aurora Expeditions offers additional optional activities like sea kayaking and scuba diving amongst Svalbard’s icy waters.

Svalbard Tours Regions

The Svalbard archipelago has nine main islands; some of these islands are connected by sea ice and expedition cruises are the only safe way to move between them. A lot of these islands are national parks, in fact, Svalbard has seven national parks in total. Find out more about the main islands below.

Texas Bar in Svalbard, an archipelago of Svalbard

Spitsbergen

Svalbard’s largest island is 39,044 square kilometres. Its landscape is dominated by rugged mountains indented by post-card perfect fjords, and more than half of the island is covered in ice year-round. Six national parks protect its delicate environment and diverse fauna, which makes it a favourite for travellers visiting Svalbard. Spitsbergen is the only permanently inhabited part of Svalbard, with Longyearbyen the biggest settlement and administrative centre of Svalbard.

Palanderbukta Fjord in Nordaustlandet, Svalbard

Nordaustlandet (North East Land)

The second largest island in the Svalbard archipelago is completely uninhabited. Situated entirely within the Nordaust-Svalbard Nature Reserve, it is made up of sizable ice caps and tundra.

Reindeer in Svalbard

Edgeøya (Edge Island)

Edgeøya is a Norwegian island situated in the southeast of the Svalbard archipelago. With an area of 5,073 square kilometres, it is the third-largest island in this archipelago. It forms part of the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve and is home to polar bears and reindeer.

Kittiwakes on sea ice in the Arctic

Barentsøya (Barents Island)

Named after the Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz, almost half of this island in the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve is glaciated. While the island has no permanent human inhabitants, it is a favourite of polar bears and seabirds, especially kittiwakes.

Harbour Seals in Svalbard

Prins Karls Foreland (Prince Charles Foreland)

This long island on Svalbard’s west coast and its surrounding seas constitutes Forlandet National Park. It boasts jagged peaks and wild glaciers that remind one of the Antarctic peninsula, alongside vast green plains and polar deserts. The harbour seal is commonly found here.

Huddle of walrus in Svalbard

Kvitøya (White Island)

When ice conditions allow, adventure seekers can discover Svalbard’s easternmost island, where polar bears roam and walrus swim. This island is the resting place of Andrée’s Arctic balloon expedition of 1897, which was one of the great mysteries of the Arctic for decades.

Svalbard is known as the kingdom of the polar bear for good reason

Kong Karls Land (King Charles Land)

This small island group is part of the Nordaust-Svalbard Nature Reserve and boasts the largest concentration of polar bears in Svalbard. Because of this, there is a ban on traffic to the island, with ships and aircraft not being able to come within 500 metres of the area.

Arctic landscape, Barents Sea

Bjørnøya (Bear Island)

The southernmost island of Svalbard is rarely visited because it can be challenging to access, with no protected bays, rough weather, strong wind and thick fog. While its history revolves around hunting, it is now an important scientific research site and the whole island is a nature reserve with restricted access.

A lone Black Guillemot

This small, remote island in the far southeast is part of the Southeast Svalbard Nature Reserve. Visiting can be a lucky dip because of heavy ice, fog, rough waters and unprotected beaches. The island has been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA), supporting breeding colonies of thick-billed guillemots, black guillemots and black-legged kittiwakes.

Svalbard Cruise Activities

Visit Svalbard with Aurora Expeditions and our Expedition Team will take you on excursions unique to the High Arctic, fully included in the cost of your expedition. For those interested in a little extra excitement, there are optional activities designed to get you closer to the action. Our Svalabrd expeditions provide a mix of comfort and adventure; for those willing to explore this remote Norwegian archipelago the memories will last a lifetime.

ARCTIC WILDERNESS

ARCTIC WILDERNESS

The unique Arctic ecosystem of Svalbard is almost entirely protected in a network of nature reserves and national parks. Our voyage takes us around Svalbard where a significant part of the land surface is reserved as special protected areas: six nature reserves, three national parks, geological reserve and bird sanctuaries. Each has its own claim to Svalbard’s magnificent natural history.

Whether by land or sea, we’ll encounter a wealth of wildlife — including polar bear, walrus, Arctic fox, reindeer, and a variety of whales and seals — in one of the High Arctic’s most pristine environments. We will also encounter a surprising variety of hardy plant life and striking geological formations throughout the archipelago.

KVITØYA

The monumental shifting of ancient ice ages built up the planes and low hills of Kvitøya. The rarely visited island is not always accessible to expedition ships, but it may provide yet another opportunity to observe polar bears in their natural habitat. While exploring Kvitøya, you can see its main attraction – walrus rookeries. The noisy cries of these massive animals drown out everything around, and you will have the opportunity to observe their life as few others will ever witness them.

This rocky island, far from civilization and almost completely covered by ice, became the final resting place of the balloon expedition of the Swedish polar explorer Salomon August Andrée.

POLAR BEARS

POLAR BEARS

Svalbard boasts one of the Arctic’s highest concentrations of polar bears. They are the world’s largest land carnivores and have become a symbol of the imperiled Arctic wilderness. This is one of the best places in the world to view polar bears hunting in their preferred habitat.

During our sojourn we hope to come across this majestic creature employing various strategies to catch seals. These wide-ranging and opportunistic Arctic nomads can be found at many places and times during our voyage.

Sea Kayaking

PHOTOGRAPHY

Svalbard is the ultimate destination for photographers interested in capturing incredible images of Arctic animals and scenery. Our free photography program gives you the chance to learn and practice your skills alongside an experienced expert. With a full itinerary of spellbinding destinations and daylight around the clock, your photo opportunities are seemingly endless. Our expert photographer will be there to help you make the most of this bounty in your viewfinder.

Hurtigruten Unveils New Norwegian Cruises to Svalbard and Oslo in 2023

The cruise line's iconic Coastal Express is getting a major upgrade

Caitlin Morton is a freelance writer based in Kansas City. Her work has appeared in Condé Nast Traveler, Vogue, and many other publications.

For nearly 130 years, Hurtigruten’s Norwegian Coastal Express has been the best, most authentic way to travel across Norway. And things are about to get even better. In 2023, the cruise company is unveiling two upgraded versions of the iconic route: the Svalbard Express and North Cape Express, both of which will allow passengers to see even more of the Scandinavian nation.

These new extended routes mark the biggest product evolution since the Coastal Express—part expedition cruise, part ferry system, part cargo transport—launched in 1893.

“We have a lot of guests that come again and again on the Coastal Express, but now we will make something a bit different,” Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten Norway, told TripSavvy. “Now we can really say that guests can experience the best of Norway .”

While the original Coastal Express travels round trip from the southern city of Bergen up to the far northeastern town of Kirkenes, the new Svalbard Express will venture even further north to—you guessed it— Svalbard , an archipelago about halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Upon arriving in Svalbard, passengers will get to experience excursions like dog sledding tours and wildlife photography lessons—the latter of which is particularly exciting, considering that Svalbard is one of the few places on the planet where you can see polar bears in their natural habitat.

Meanwhile, the North Cape Express takes guests to Oslo , marking the first time Hurtigruten will offer regular sailings to the capital city. According to Felin, this particular sailing will appeal to a new demographic for the cruise line—namely younger crowds interested in good art and good food.

“If you travel far to visit Norway, you probably want to see Oslo anyway,” Felin said. “Our dock will be just outside the Opera House, so it’s a very good way to experience a cool city.”

Both journeys will take place on board the MS Trollfjord, a current Hurtigruten vessel that will receive a complete refurbishment during the first half of 2023. Renovations will include upgraded cabins with modern Scandinavian décor and updated restaurants. Though these updates are exciting, long-time Hurtigruten fans can rest easy knowing that both routes will still include some of the brand’s most beloved features: impeccable service, onboard lecture programs, and incredibly strong ties with Norway’s coastal communities.

Courtesy of Hurtigruten

Those community ties are perhaps best seen in the cruise line’s Coastal Kitchen program . As part of this initiative, over 80 percent of the ingredients served onboard come from the ports you visit along every Coastal Express route. This past March, the program got an even more hyper-local boost by introducing a set of “ Culinary Ambassadors ”—award-winning Norwegian chefs who work with the cruise line's chefs to create new dishes and themed menus. (Don’t be surprised if you sit down to a five-course meal in which every dish features seaweed, for example.)

“We really want our guests to feel like they’re part of a bigger mission,” said Felin. “It’s not just tourism. Guests will be involved in a very critical part of Norway.”

The 14-day, round-trip Svalbard Express is scheduled to run from June to September in 2023, and from May to September from 2024 onward. Meanwhile, the 13-day North Cape Express cruise will run from late September through May starting in 2023. Outside cabins start at $7,369 per person on the Svalbard Express and $4,483 per person on the North Cape Express.

HX-Hurtigruten celebrates 131 years with North American Birthday Sale

CruiseMapper logo

HX-Hurtigruten Expeditions is marking 131 years of navigating the iconic Norwegian coastline with a North American Birthday Sale from June 25 to July 16, 2024.

Since July 2, 1893, Hurtigruten has operated nearly the same 34-port route as its Original Coastal Express Voyages, establishing one of the world’s most distinctive itineraries. In 2023, the cruise line introduced the Svalbard Line and the North Cape Line , offering an elevated cruise experience with extended day stops, showcasing Norway’s premier coastal towns and attractions.

These new routes are part of Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages, which provide a premium experience featuring all-inclusive food and beverages, enhanced onboard activities, and comprehensive lecture series by the Coastal Experience Team.

To commemorate 131 years of service, Hurtigruten is offering up to 50% off Original Coastal Express Voyages and up to 35% off Signature Voyages for departures in the 2024-2025 season. Additionally, guests can save up to 15% and receive up to 5,000 Norwegian kroner (~US$450) when booking for the 2025-2026 season. The Original Coastal Express Voyages, largely unchanged since their inception on July 2, 1893, cover the route from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, encompassing 34 scenic coastal communities set among renowned fjords, islands, and mountains. These itineraries have been vital to the coastal communities from the beginning, offering an authentic Norwegian travel experience.

Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages, the cruise line’s newest offering, aim to significantly enhance the Norwegian cruising experience and redefine small-ship sailing. The Svalbard Line, sailing in the summer, allows passengers to follow in the footsteps of early explorers to the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The North Cape Line, operating in the winter, takes passengers deep into the northern landscape to view the Northern Lights.

Driven by customer feedback and inspired by the golden age of ocean liners, these new voyages allow guests to delve into Norway’s heritage, gastronomy, and stunning landscapes like never before.

Earlier this year, Hurtigruten introduced Tom Kerss as the world’s first Chief Aurora Chaser and extended the Northern Lights Promise for the 2024-2025 season and beyond. The Northern Lights Promise reaffirms Hurtigruten’s commitment to providing exceptional opportunities for guests to witness the Northern Lights. This unique guarantee ensures that if the Northern Lights do not appear during their voyage, guests will receive a complimentary 6- or 7-day voyage to try again the following season.

Explore cosmopolitan Oslo

Enjoy time in Oslo before flying to Svalbard

Your expedition begins in Oslo, Norway’s fjord-side capital. If you have time before your flight, head out to explore the city center.

With its rich history and fashionable art scene, Oslo is a fascinating city. You’ll find museums, galleries, and breathtaking architecture – including the beautiful Opera House and new Munch Museum.

Take a stroll in the Ekebergparken Sculpture Park or relax in a floating sauna. Explore modern Sørenga and enjoy urban beach life, or try New Nordic cuisine before flying out to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago.

Longyearbyen adventures

Explore the town at the top of the world

After breakfast, it’s time to explore the world’s northernmost town, a colorful frontier settlement where people are outnumbered by snowmobiles.

Longyearbyen is perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll down the main street and you might see Svalbard reindeer pass by. Although wild, they’re curious and gentle. Admire the polar bear–inspired art or visit the North Pole Expedition Museum.

Before boarding your ship in the afternoon and continuing your Arctic journey, join an included excursion after lunch, or try an optional electric bike, dog-sledding, or hiking tour.

Expedition days

Experience pristine Arctic wilderness

Over the next three days, you’ll explore the natural beauty and rugged tundra of Northwest Spitsbergen National Park. Surrounded by steep mountains, stark glaciers, and beautiful offshore islands, we’ll scan for Arctic animals, including whales, seals, walruses, and reindeer. If we’re really lucky, we might even see the elusive polar bear hunting on the ice. In stunning Kongsfjord, you may see glaciers calving into the sea.

Be ready for adventure: we’ll seize any opportunity to launch our kayaks or set out in our small boats (RIB) to go ashore and hike or participate in a beach cleanup.

svalbard cruise 2023

Exploring the east

Scouting for polar bears, seabirds, and walruses

Be ready for anything as this stage of your journey is truly adventurous. If sea ice permits, we’ll venture across the 80th parallel north and explore the pristine wilderness of northeast Svalbard.

Perhaps we’ll head to the immense Bråsvellbreen glacier to see waterfalls tumbling into the icy depths, or to Kvitøy to look for polar bears roaming the ice. Heading south, we may explore Freemansundet and Kapp Lee, or take our small expedition boats to Edgeøya or Barentsøya.

In true expedition style, exactly where we’ll go will depend on the conditions on the day. Channel your inner explorer on exhilarating landings, hikes and kayak trips, and look out for wildlife like polar bears, walruses, guillemots and gulls.

And if the ice doesn’t allow us to pass to the east, you’ll experience just as much adventure as we delve deeper into the wonders of western Svalbard. We’ll take a flexible route through deep fjords and by soaring mountains, seeking out remarkable Arctic wildlife.

svalbard cruise 2023

Hornsund and Bellsund

Majestic glaciers, birds, and pioneer history

Your expedition cruise continues south toward Hornsund – one of Svalbard’s most beautiful fjords. Rich, colorful vegetation transforms into towering mountains along this picturesque waterway. Head out to the deck to spot seals and whales, admire Mount Hornsundtind, and watch glaciers calving into the sea.

Then we head to snow-capped Bellsund, whose cliffs are home to large colonies of auks, guillemots, and northern fulmars, while Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer can be found below. Look out for the early mining settlements here and learn about Wanny Woldstad, the first female trapper.

svalbard cruise 2023

Astonishing Isfjord

Witness living history and ecology

Our Svalbard circumnavigation continues into Isfjord’s lush fjord system, where you’ll see immense, glacier-carved valleys rich in wildlife, vegetation, and human history.

To the north, Alkehornet is home to guillemots, kittiwakes, Svalbard reindeer, and Arctic foxes. Clear traces of the area’s whaling and hunting past are visible on beaches and in bays. Farther south, we’ll pass the former Isfjord Radio satellite communication station, which is now one of the world’s most beautifully situated hotels.

Today’s activities will be determined by the ever-changing weather conditions in Isfjord. Each day, your Expedition Team will decide on the best options for exploring.

svalbard cruise 2023

Return to Longyearbyen

The last day at the top of the world

Your Arctic adventure comes to an end back in Longyearbyen. Before your flight back to Oslo, you’ll have time to explore more of Longyearbyen and do a bit of shopping – perhaps you’ll pick out a warm Svalbard sweater.

A transfer will take you to the airport for your flight home. You’ll return with more knowledge about wildlife, history, polar ice, and climate change in the Arctic, and you’ll have memories of an incredible experience.

Posted: 7 November 2023 | Last updated: 6 December 2023

Wondering what it’s like to sail on the most opulent cruise ships, waited on by butlers and sleeping under 3,000-thread count sheets in suites designed by Ralph Lauren? Wonder no more – we’ve got the lowdown on the world’s most luxurious sailings, whether it’s expedition ship-based explorations of the Arctic or Champagne-soaked floats around the Caribbean.

Dread disembarkation day? Why not simply stay onboard? No, we’re not suggesting claiming squatters’ rights at the end of your cruise, but splashing out on a cabin on  The World , described by its owners as a luxury private residence at sea. One of the best examples is Scenic Cruises. Book a sailing with this luxury cruise line and the fare includes absolutely everything, whether it’s international and internal flights or fine dining, butler service and excursions.

Luxury cruise lines can be fully all-inclusive too

Okay, so no cruise ship restaurant has bagged a Michelin star yet, but plenty of Michelin-starred chefs have helped shape the cuisine on cruise ships. Cornelius Gallagher has designed the menus for Celebrity Ascent, which sets sail in September 2023, and Seabourn has worked closely with Thomas Keller in the past. There’s no shortage of innovation, either – SeaDream Yacht Club recently launched the first plant-based menu at sea.

Collaborations between cruise lines and famous names in the world of food and entertainment are common, and now some of the world’s top designers are getting in on the act. Ralph Lauren has teamed up with Oceania Cruises to ramp up the wow factor of the Owner’s Suites on Vista, which launched in May 2023. Expect the design house’s furnishings in the living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.

Hurtigruten's Maud

Hurtigruten is celebrating 131 years of sailing the Norwegian coastline with a North American Birthday Sale, running from June 25 to July 16, 2024

Discounts include up to 50 percent off Original Coastal Express Voyages and up to 35 percent off Signature Voyages for the 2024-25 season. Additionally, guests booking 2025-26 departures will save up to 15 percent off, plus receive 5,000 Norwegian kroner (around $450).

Since July 2, 1893, Hurtigruten has sailed almost the same 34 ports as its Original Coastal Express Voyages do today. Sailing from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, the route visits 34 coastal communities set amongst fjords.

Last year, the cruise line introduced the Svalbard Line and the North Cape Line, offering a cruise experience with longer day stops, exploring the best of Norway’s coastline. These newer itineraries are part of Hurtigruten’s Signature Voyages, a premium experience that includes all-inclusive food and drinks, enhanced onboard activities and in-depth lectures by the Coastal Experience Team.

Investigating newly discovered hydrothermal vents at depths of 3,000 meters off Svalbard

by Ulrike Prange, University of Bremen

Investigating newly discovered hydrothermal vents at depths of 3,000 meters off Svalbard

Hydrothermal vents can be found around the world at the junctions of drifting tectonic plates. But there are many hydrothermal fields still to be discovered. During a 2022 expedition of the MARIA S. MERIAN, the first field of hydrothermal vents on the 500-kilometer-long Knipovich Ridge off the coast of Svalbard was discovered.

An international team of researchers from Bremen and Norway, led by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Bohrmann of MARUM—Center for Marine Environmental Sciences and the Geosciences department at the University of Bremen, now reports on the discovery in the journal Scientific Reports .

Hydrothermal vents are seeps on the sea floor from which hot liquids escape. "Water penetrates into the ocean floor where it is heated by magma. The overheated water then rises back to the sea floor through cracks and fissures. On its way up the fluid become enriched in minerals and materials dissolved out of the oceanic crustal rocks. These fluids often seep out again at the sea floor through tube-like chimneys called black smokers, where metal-rich minerals are then precipitated," explains Prof. Gerhard Bohrmann of MARUM and chief scientist of the MARIA S. MERIAN (MSM 109) expedition.

At water depths greater than 3,000 meters, the remote-controlled submersible vehicle MARUM-QUEST took samples from the newly discovered hydrothermal field. Named after Jøtul, a giant in Nordic mythology, the field is located on the 500-kilometer-long Knipovich Ridge.

The ridge lies within the triangle formed by Greenland, Norway and Svalbard on the boundary of the North American and European tectonic plates . This kind of plate boundary, where two plates move apart, is called a spreading ridge.

The Jøtul Field is located on an extremely slow spreading ridge with a growth rate of the plates of less than two centimeters per year. Because very little is known about hydrothermal activity on slow spreading ridges, the expedition focused on obtaining an overview of the escaping fluids, as well as the size and composition of active and inactive smokers in the field.

Investigating newly discovered hydrothermal vents at depths of 3,000 meters off Svalbard

"The Jøtul Field is a discovery of scientific interest not only because of its location in the ocean but also due to its climate significance, which was revealed by our detection of very high concentrations of methane in the fluid samples, among other things," reports Gerhard Bohrmann.

Methane emissions from hydrothermal vents indicate a vigorous interaction of magma with sediments. On its journey through the water column, a large proportion of the methane is converted into carbon dioxide , which increases the concentration of CO 2 in the ocean and contributes to acidification, but it also has an impact on climate when it interacts with the atmosphere.

The amount of methane from the Jøtul Field that eventually escapes directly into the atmosphere, where it then acts as a greenhouse gas , still needs to be studied in more detail. There is also little known about the organisms living chemosynthetically in the Jøtul Field. In the darkness of the deep ocean, where photosynthesis cannot occur, hydrothermal fluids form the basis for chemosynthesis, which is employed by very specific organisms in symbiosis with bacteria.

In order to significantly expand on the somewhat sparse information available on the Jøtul Field, a new expedition of the MARIA S. MERIAN will start in late summer of this year under the leadership of Gerhard Bohrmann. The focus of the expedition is the exploration and sampling of as yet unknown areas of the Jøtul Field. With extensive data from the Jøtul Field it will be possible to make comparisons with the few already known hydrothermal fields in the Arctic province, such as the Aurora Field and Loki's Castle.

The published study is a part of the Bremen Cluster of Excellence "The Ocean Floor—Earth's Uncharted Interface," which explores complex processes on the sea floor and their impacts on global climate. The Jøtul Field will also play an important role as an object of future research in the Cluster.
