How Pros "Barely Swing," but Hit the Ball a Country Mile

Have you ever noticed how Tour Players CRUSH the ball, even when it looks like they're swinging easy?

Dumb question, I know. We've all noticed this at one time or another.

Well, the reason pros can bomb the ball effortlessly is because...

All Great Golfers Have One Thing in Common:

Hi, I'm John Novosel, Jr., and I'm proud to say my dad was part scientist, part teaching pro, and one of the brightest minds in golf.

One day, while analyzing a Tour pro's swing, he stumbled upon something amazing:

He noticed the pro's backswing took exactly three times as long as the downswing.

In other words, a 3-to-1 ratio.

tour tempo apple watch

Intrigued, we grabbed a video of Tiger Woods and noticed the same 3:1 backswing-to-downswing ratio.

And tha t's when we had our Eureka! moment.

We spent the next several days watching every video we could find of the world's greatest golfers including...

Jack Nicklaus...

Gary Player...

Arnold Palmer...

Sam Snead...

Tom Waston...

Byron Nelson.

Guess what?

They were all 3 to 1.

Yes, their swing motions were very different, but...

Nearly Every Great Golfer Has this "Magical" 3:1 Backswing-to- Downswing Ratio

This includes today's stars such as...

Scottie Scheffler

24:8 Tempo = 3:1

Wyndham Clark

18:6 Tempo = 3:1

21:7 Tempo = 3:1

Yes, some pros have faster swings...

And some have slower swings...

But virtually ALL of them have a 3:1 backswing-to-downswing RATIO.

In other words, the same TEMPO.

When we analyzed the swings of "amateur" golfers, you can guess what we found:

Yep, their tempos were all different — no consistency.

So we started documenting all this and...

Our Discovery Became a New York Times Best Seller...

...And Yale University Scientists Verified Our Results

About eight years after we published our book...

Scientists at Yale University published their own independent research paper called, "A Biomechanical Understanding of Tempo in the Golf Swing."

tour tempo apple watch

They discovered, like us, that the backswing-to-downswing ratio for nearly all great golfers is 3:1.

Yes, every time and for every player, including...

Tiger Woods 3:1

Jack Nicklaus 3:1

Ben Hogan 3:1

Gary Player 3:1

Sam Snead 3:1

Rory McIlroy 3:1

Ricky Fowler 3:1

Phil Mickelson 3:1

Louis Oosthuizen 3:1

Annika Sorenstam 3:1

Henrik Stenson 3:1

Ian Poulter 3:1

Ernie Els 3:1

Greg Norman 3:1

Most Importantly... the 3:1 Tempo Works Wonders for "Regular" Golfers Like You!

You're probably thinking, "I'm not a pro golfer. Why do I care what THEIR tempo is?"

Because the 3:1 tempo works for everyone.

"Regular" golfers who have tried it are saying this...

"So many bad habits disappear on their own...my body is finally working as one."

"Unbelievable simple concept results in wonderful gains on the course."

— Tracey S.

"Gave me one of those 'light bulb' moments...flushed my 4-iron off the tee. They were all dead straight."

"The simplicity really is quite amazing."

"This may be the golden key...so basic, but so essential"

"Immediately started playing better...and I've been playing for 40+ years"

"The 'missing link' I thought I would never find...distance and accuracy."

"Removes the mechanics...frees up your body to respond with a tempo that delivers power and balance."

"My index dropped from 22 to 15.6...amazing all golf coaches don't put this at the top of their lists."

"Instantly picked up accuracy and distance...drives were 20+ yards longer."

This Isn't Shocking to Golf's Great Players and Coaches, Who Said This about Tempo...

tour tempo apple watch

"You can correct the errors in your swing by correcting the tempo."

— Jack Nicklaus, 18-Time Major Champion

tour tempo apple watch

"Tempo is the glue that sticks your golf swing together."

— Nick Faldo, 6-Time Major Champion

"One of the easiest things you can do right now to start hitting better shots is improving the quality of your rhythm."

— Jeff Ritter, Golf Digest #1 Coach in Oregon

So, How Do YOU Learn the Perfect 3:1 Tempo?

For a long time, even the best-of-the-best golf instructors have said...

"You can't really teach great tempo."

And they were right.

Using older methods, it was a hard concept to learn.

That's why my dad and I invented a NEW way for you to achieve perfect tempo:

Introducing...

The tour tempo app.

tour tempo apple watch

"Hear" Your Way to Perfect Tempo

Here's how it works:

The Tour Tempo app plays audible "tones."

1. Start your backswing on the first tone...

2. Start your downswing on the second tone...

3. Make impact on the third tone.

Yes, it's really easy...and REALLY effective!

Let Me Show You in This Quick Demo...

As you can see in the video, it's OK if you have a faster or slower swing speed...

Tour Tempo has faster tones (18:6) and slower tones (30:10) to suit you...

But they all get you into the magic backswing-to-downswing RATIO of 3:1.

tour tempo apple watch

Improves Your Short Game, Too!

tour tempo apple watch

Not only does Tour Tempo adjust the speed of the tones to match your swing...

It also adjusts so you can use it to build a bulletproof short game.

That's right: during our research, we noticed that tour pros also have the same tempo with pitches and chip shots...

But it's a 2:1 backswing-to-downswing ratio.

Yes, Swing Problems DISAPPEAR When You Have the Right Tempo!

When you get your tempo right, everything else falls into place.

You immediately get...

✅ Effortless and powerful ball striking

✅ The proper swing plane

✅ Automatic timing and rhythm

✅ The perfect release

And by focusing on tempo, you do NOT need to worry about...

❌ What starts your backswing?

❌ What starts the downswing?

❌ What should your arms and legs be doing?

❌ Where should your head be?

❌ What is the proper weight shift?

You can also stop bouncing from one swing theory to another.  Finally!

So, Does Tour Tempo Really Work?

"Thanks to John Novosel's research...we know virtually all good golf swings are built on a 3-to-1 ratio."

"20 more yards...the new 3-to-1 swing speed ratio for perfect, powerful tempo."

"Perfect score...Tour Tempo is scientifically proven, it’s easy to use, and it will help you in every facet of the game...the results are amazing: longer, straighter shots."

tour tempo apple watch

"Improvement the very first time you take it to the range...There's not a single golfer who should not have it."

And Here is What Golfers are Saying...

"This thing works. Dropped 7 strokes off my game in 2 weeks. If you haven’t given this a shot you are doing yourself a disservice."

"This is unbelievable, really amazing. Better ball contact both with the long game and the short game. I am really impressed."

"The best training aid that I have bought or used in my golfing career."

— J. Miller

"It works like magic. I highly recommend this product"

"PW through 5i have picked up at least 20 yards and my driver now back to ~250!!!"

"I've never hit so many pure shots in a row...From short irons to driver, it worked."

The Ultimate Apple Watch Golf Swing Practice Manual 2024

Posted by By John Austin August 1, 2023

With the latest updates in watchOS and new Apple Watch models, enhancing your golf swing has never been more accessible. The 2024 guide to using your Apple Watch as a golf swing analyzer shows just how advanced this technology has become.

tour tempo apple watch

Improve your golf game with the smartwatch on your wrist! It’s true. Your stylish and multi-functional Apple Watch is not just a fashion statement; it’s your ticket to a more precise and effective golf swing , thanks to its advanced features. With the recent update to watchOS 10 , new APIs for workout app developers have been introduced that promise to take your game to the next level. These powerful tools allow developers to harness the motion sensors in both the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra, which can detect rapid changes in velocity and acceleration—critical factors when you’re swinging a golf club.

This article will guide you through the steps of using the Apple Watch for golf swing analysis, its benefits, and how you can maximize its potential to better your game.

How Apple Watch Tracks Golf Swings

Are you curious how the Apple Watch becomes a golf swing analyzer? Your apple watch tracks golf swings in an impressive way. Let’s delve into the science behind it.

The heart of every Apple Watch is a motion co-processor, integrated into the primary chip. This is responsible for continuously tracking your golf swings. The Watch takes advantage of two primary sensors to record this: the  accelerometer and the gyroscope . Complex algorithms analyse these collected multivariate time series data and interpret details such as the arc of your swing, the speed of your club head and more.

But the Apple Watch doesn’t stop at just recording. It utilizes AI and machine learning to find patterns and any slight inconsistencies in your swings.

The Apple Watch’s ability to record, analyse and provide results instantly is what makes it an awe-inspiring ally for every golfer wishing to iron out their swing glitches. Use this technology at your disposal to gain insights beyond what meets the eye, and hit that perfect golf swing every time.

Golfing Features of the watchOS 10

Imagine perfecting your golf swing with just a flick of your wrist; sounds too good to be true, right? Here’s the kicker: with the new Apple Watch, it’s entirely possible. This gadget is not just a tech marvel but also a golf trainer that fits right onto your wrist!

Here’s how the magic happens. Apple’s latest watchOS 10 includes new APIs for workout app developers that can revolutionize the way we play golf. You see, the motion sensors on the Apple Watch, especially on the Series 8 and Ultra, pick up every twist and turn in your wrist. They are incredibly sensitive to changes in velocity and acceleration, such as when you swing a golf club. Right now, you might be thinking, “That’s great, but how does this help me with my golf swing?”

tour tempo apple watch

Well, when using apps like SwingVision or Golfshot that have access to this high-frequency motion data, they can analyze even the minute details of your golf swing. For example, SwingVision can check the serve pronation – that’s the twist in your forearm, wrist, and hand when you swing. Likewise, Golfshot can detect small wrist movements. It’s like having a golf coach on your wrist, analyzing your swing in real-time and giving you feedback on how to improve it! How cool is that?

Don’t you just love technology when it helps you play better golf? For every golf enthusiast, the new Apple Watch could be a game-changer, making every swing, every round, much more precise and controlled. With the latest watchOS, the Apple Watch is transitioning from being a passive observer of your workouts to an active participant, transforming how you play golf. Will you let this opportunity to improve your game swing by or grab it with both hands? It’s time to usher in a new era of golfing with the Apple Watch!

Top Golf Swing Apps for Apple Watch

Like any other smart technology, your Apple Watch’s functionality for golf swing analysis can be significantly enhanced with the right apps. Here are a few  top-rated golf swing apps  that transform your Apple Watch into an advanced golf swing tracker.

Using Apple Watch for Real-Time Swing Feedback

Imagine having a proficient golf coach inside your Apple Watch, guiding your every swing! That’s the kind of revolution your Apple Watch brings to your golf practice sessions. Distinct from many apps that provide post-swing analysis, what sets the Apple Watch apart is its ability to give  real-time feedback  while you’re in the game.

These insights are transformed into feedback and conveyed to you immediately. For instance, some apps can make your Apple Watch vibrate or beep when your grip is too tight, letting you loosen up instantly. Similarly, instantaneous feedback on your alignment or swing path can help you make immediate corrections. If your downswing is too steep or your swing speed is inconsistent, your watch can alert you right away, helping you improve on the spot without reinforcing the bad habit swing after swing.

How about an  on-spot tempo coach ? Some apps offer a brilliant feature where your watch will vibrate in a rhythm to guide your swing tempo. All you need to do is swing maintaining the rhythm set by your watch.

Beyond just providing numbers on your swing speed or swing plane, the real-time feedback mechanism works like a mirror, reflecting back your movements to help you understand and refine your swing as you practice. It leaps beyond corrective analysis and opens a world of self-awareness.

Take this dynamic coach with you to the golf course, and experience a paradigm shift in the way you understand and adapt your swing, making significant strides in your game. Be ready for incremental improvements through immediate corrections and become your own best golf coach with the Apple Watch!

Setting Up Your Apple Watch for Golf

One of the finer aspects of using the Apple Watch for golf swing analysis is its intuitive and straightforward setup process. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to transform your everyday Apple Watch into your personal golf mentor.

1. App Selection:  Start by exploring the App Store on your iPhone and choosing a golf swing analysis app that suits your requirements.

2. Installation:  Install the selected app on your iPhone. If you cannot find the app, check if the ‘Automatic App Install’ setting is on. Otherwise, you can manually install the app on your Watch through the Watch companion app on your iPhone.

3. Initial Setup:  Run the app on your iPhone first and go through its welcome tour or setup guide. You may need to create a user account, set up your profile, and provide some basic information about your golfing skill and goals.

4. Watch Setup:  Open the app on your Watch. It would automatically sync with your profile on the iPhone. Some apps will require certain configurations on your watch for accurate swing tracking. These could include setting up the watch on your leading wrist, checking that the WatchOS is up-to-date, calibrating the inbuilt sensors, and ensuring turning on  Wrist Detection .

tour tempo apple watch

5. Test Swing:  With everything set up, take a test swing! Once you’ve completed your swing, look at your Watch or iPhone to see the analysis result. If everything looks good, you’re all set.

6. On-Course Settings:  Before stepping onto the golf course, make sure to adequately charge your Apple Watch. Because tracking swings require a bit more power. Also, remember to enable ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode on your Watch. It can avoid any phone call or message distractions during your swing.

Improving Your Swing with Apple Watch

Your golf swing is a unique combination of multiple variables – grip, posture, alignment, swing plane, tempo, and more. It’s a complex orchestra where each note needs to be in rhythm for the performance to be melodious. With Apple Watch’s precise tracking and superior analytics, you can find that rhythm and improve your swing significantly. Here’s how:

  • Understand Your Swing:  Apple Watch gives you an in-depth understanding of your swing. With easily comprehensible metrics and visualizations, you can discern the nuances of your swing even if you’re not a seasoned golfer. The better you understand your swing, the more efficient your improvements will be.
  • Identify Weak Areas:  Apple Watch helps identify the weaker links in your swing, whether it’s a slow swing speed, inconsistent swing plane, poor tempo, or incorrect grip. With these insights, you can focus your practice sessions on these weak areas.
  • Real-time Corrections:  Real-time feedback from your Apple Watch allows you to correct mistakes immediately. This is crucial because it helps prevent bad habits from becoming ingrained in your swing, paving the way for consistent improvement.
  • Compare and Track Progress:  Over time, your Apple Watch collects a wealth of data from numerous golf games, creating a rich landscape for comparison. Comparing swings over time helps track your progress, heightening your motivation and commitment.
  • Personalized Training Programs:  Apps like Zepp Golf offer personalized training programs based on your swing data. This means your Apple Watch doubles up as your personalized golf coach, making suggestions to hone your skills based on your strong and weak points.
  • Peer Learning:  Some apps allow you to share your swing data with friends or other app users. This develops a community of learners where you can learn from others’ swings, their strengths, and areas of improvements.

Comparing Apple Watch with Other Golf Swing Analyzers

While the Apple Watch is a game-changer in golf swing analysis, there are other devices and apps in the market that compete in the same space. How does Apple Watch stack up against these? Here is a deeper delve into this:

  • Accuracy:  The Apple Watch delivers highly accurate data thanks to its powerful and precise sensors. It also leverages advanced algorithms for data interpretation. While individual results may vary, on the whole, it stands shoulder-to-shoulder on performance with other specialized  golf swing analyzers .
  • Convenience:  One upper hand that Apple Watch has over specialized analyzers is the convenience factor. It’s a multipurpose device, eliminating the need to carry an additional gadget around. Plus, it syncs seamlessly with your iPhone, allowing easy interpretation of data.
  • Real-Time Feedback:  One thing that sets the Apple Watch apart is its ability to provide real-time feedback. Most golf swing analyzers require users to analyze after each shot, but the Apple Watch’s on-the-spot analysis can significantly emphasize immediate improvements.
  • Durability:  Apple Watch balances style with durability. Apple watch can withstand sports activities, although you should wear it properly to avoid accidental damages.
  • App Ecosystem:  A lot of golf swing analyzers lack a rich app ecosystem that Apple Watch offers. This allows for a dynamic range of apps with varying features, giving Apple Watch a significant advantage.
  • Battery Life:  One common concern is battery life. While specialized golf analyzers often excel in this aspect, Apple Watch might need more frequent charging due to the power needs of continuous motion monitoring.

Comparison between Apple Watch and Golf Swing Analyzer

That said, the exact comparison would depend on the particular golf analyzer in question. However, the versatility, precision, and enriched features of Apple Watch alongside its status as an everyday accessory makes it a formidable contender in the world of golf swing analyzers.

watchOS 10 Announcement

In the latest watchOS 10 announcement, Apple introduced the new APIs. The motion sensors on both Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra can detect rapid changes in velocity and acceleration, including swinging a golf club. Can Apple Watch withstand the rigors of golf?

Yes, Apple Watches come with sturdy construction and can work well with regular sports activity. However, avoid slamming it with golf clubs or dropping it on hard surfaces.

I’m not tech-savvy. Can I still use Apple Watch for my golf game?

Absolutely! One of the strengths of Apple devices is their intuitive user interface. You can start exploiting their golf benefits with a basic understanding of how to download an app and read the resulting metrics.

Can the Apple Watch be used during competitive matches?

While rules vary across tournaments, generally wearable technology isn’t permitted during matches unless explicitly allowed. Always check the tournament’s rules before using your Apple Watch.

Conclusion and Future Developments

The realm of golf and technology have seen a harmonious conjunction with the arrival of tools like the Apple Watch, suitable for both newbies and seasoned golf players. You can now pair Apple Watch with the right apps to understand and improve the golf swing, which is a complicated blend of micro-movements.

Zepp tempo measurements with Apple Watch: Anyone using it?

I realized that the Zepp app offers tempo measurements for free with Apple Watch, but I was pretty surprised at what I measured. Pretty much all of my swing tempos are 4.8-4.3 to 1, which seems incredibly slow. Downswing times are around .27 to .23, but all backswings are over a second. Even trying to make my backswing as fast as possible, I’ve only gotten to 3.8:1, with a backswing time just under a second.

Has anyone else used the Apple Watch to measure your tempo? Is it accurate, or is my backswing just crazy slow? Any good drills for speeding up the backswing?

Tempo in the Short Game: Master it to Unlock Consistency

Tempo is one of those secrets of golf that few people truly understand. But when you do, it can change your golf game forever.

What about  golf short game tempo  though?

While most know about  golf swing tempo , what about your short game timing? Is it the same tempo as a full swing? Does it change for bunker shots or a short pitch shot?

These are all great questions and ones we’re going to answer today. If you’re ready to improve your short game and become more consistent around the greens, it’s time to work on your tempo.

Golf Short Game Tempo

Short game tempo is nothing like a full swing tempo.

Tempo simply means the total time it takes you to swing the golf club. It’s a combination of your backswing, transition, and downswing.

When it comes to full swing tempo, studies and the book Tour Tempo, have found the ideal timing is 3:1. This means that a great ball striker’s backswing takes 3X as long as their downswing.

It’s important to note that tempo does not mean swing speed .

A slow tempo or fast tempo has nothing to do with how fast or slow you swing the golf club. Tempo refers to the correlation between backswing and downswing time.

Let’s get into how to create a world-class short game swing with perfect tempo so you dominate any golf course.

Key Takeaways

  • Practice swings can train your tempo.
  • Faster tempo doesn’t necessarily mean good tempo.
  • Short game tempo is different from long game tempo.
  • There are several golf apps that will train you to have perfect tempo.

Keep reading to learn more about tempo so you can save shots around the green.

Short Game Tempo

While a 3:1 tempo is great for your full swing, it’ll lead to disaster in your short game. Think about it, chips and pitches happen from close range and you don’t need a big swing to execute the shot.

Instead,  you want a 2:1 tempo  according to John Novosel, the author of  Tour Tempo  and  Tour Tempo 2: The Short Game and Beyond . He also has an app with the same name that teaches you how to groove the perfect tempo for your full swing and short game (more on that in the next section).

As described in his second book, learning this secret can change everything,  “Got the dreaded yips with your putter or chipping club? TT2 has the cure. Can’t hit those short game shots from 40 to 60 yards? TT2 short-game tones give you the feel for the tournament player’s favorite stroke saver. Terrified of greenside bunker shots? TT2 reveals the tempo secret that makes sand play so easy for tour pros.”

While Tour pros don’t have much in common in terms of grip, swing speed, equipment, and routines, tempo is one of them. If you observe golfers closely like the author of the book did, it’s easy to figure out their short game success.

For full shots and short shots, they all have a tempo that makes it easy to hit it better than ever. The same goes with short shots, the tempo just changes on short, precision swings.

What is the correct Short Game Tempo in Golf

60 Yards and In

Once you’re inside 60 yards, your swing and approach to the game should change. If you struggle on these 40-60 yard shots with a choppy swing, tempo might be the reason.

Here’s what the author said in Tour Tempo 2,  “World-class players, when they are playing their best, adhere to a 2-to-1 tempo constant on shots from 60 yards in.”

So if you want to improve your short game immediately, it’s time to speed up your tempo!

But he elaborated by saying,  “However the time it takes a given player to execute those shots is not necessarily linked to the players full-swing tempo. The shorter swings can be significantly faster or slower than the longer swings, depending on the individual.”

As he mentioned, it’s individualized to each player.

For example these players have a 20/10 timing (which takes 1 full second); Padraig Harrington, David Toms, and Charley Hoffman. While others have a 16/8 timing (which takes .80 seconds) including Tiger Woods, Steve Marino, and Graeme McDowell.

All great players but all have their own timing for the 2/1 ratio.  This creates a fluid swing motion and ideal swing length.

This makes a ton of sense if you think about what most golfers do on these tricky 50 or 60 yard shots. Most golfers tend to take a big backswing, realize it’s too much of a swing and then decelerate on the downswing.

Click here for tips on hitting the 50 to 75 yard wedge shot.

How to hit a wedge shot 50 to 75 yards

This leads to a lot of fat shots and overall inconsistency. And also why the normal method of “swinging like a clock” doesn’t work. Avoid this practice drill as it’ll likely groove the wrong tempo.

By speeding up your tempo it can help create a crisp, clean strike on the ball and lead to a lot more greens. Head to the practice range, backyard, or local ball field to swing the club and see how tempo should feel with short shots. Take several practice swings and you’ll instantly learn a secret of a great short game.

Bunker Tempo

If you’re like a lot of golfers you might wonder how tempo changes in the bunker? Because let’s face it, most golfers struggle out of the  bunker .

In the book,  Golf Without Fear , the author Dave Pelz polled thousands of players and found that a greenside bunker shot is the second most feared shot in golf. Even the PGA Tour average is only about 50% from bunkers – despite immaculate sand, new golf balls, and custom fit wedges.

I don’t know what the excuse is for these guys but tempo might be to blame for the everyday golfer. In fact, in the original Tour Tempo book the author mentioned it’s likely 3:1 out of the sand. But he was quickly humbled after more research and has since changed his opinion since then.

Saying in Tour Tempo 2:  “I must have been on ryegrass when I told Garrity that tour players were 3-to-1 from bunkers. That was flat out wrong. Phil Mickelson’s wrist hinge on chip shots is so abrupt that his club is parallel to the ground before his hands have moved back a foot.”

At least the author admitted the mistake and changed his opinion. A faster, 2:1 tempo is also a great way to approach bunker shots so you generate plenty of speed. Don’t forget, sand is heavy and you need speed + acceleration to escape the sand consistently.

A 3:1 tempo will create a less than stellar result on a normal pitch or bunker shot. Since you can’t take a practice swing in a bunker, make sure to mentally focus on this before walking into the trap.

Tour Tempo App (iOS only)

The Tour Tempo app is one of the best ways to improve your golf swing timing. In the app you can listen to long game and short game tones or voice prompts to time your swing perfectly.

Whether you swing it fast or slow, they have a timer with the right 3/1 (long game) or 2/1 ratio (short game). For example, in the short game section they have 14/7, 16/8, 18/9, 20/10, or 22/11. These tones and voice prompts make it incredibly easy to train your swing on the range or short game area.

If you haven’t invested this $25 into your game yet, I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, the Tour Tempo app is only available in the App store for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch .

FAQs About Tempo in Golf

Do you have more questions about finding the right tempo for your golf swing? If so, keep reading to learn more and dial in one of the most important fundamentals in the game.

What is a good tempo for the golf swing? What is a 3-1 tempo in golf?

A 3-1 tempo in golf is the ideal tempo to make a consistent strike at the golf ball. This means your backswing takes 3X as long as your downswing.

Which makes sense as you need to load up on the backswing to unwind quickly on the downswing. This is where your weight shifts and you accelerate through the golf ball at impact. Remember, you can only accelerate once in the golf swing and it needs to happen at impact,  not  the transition or takeaway.

Golf Short Game

What is considered a short game in golf?

Short game is a broad golf term that is used to describe shots from close range. This might mean 10 or 20 yards off the green, depending on who you ask. But in terms of changing tempo, it’s up to 60 yards.

Your short game consists of chipping, pitching, bunker shots, flop shots, and putting. These shots tend to make up a majority of your score (especially if you’re a higher handicap golfer). This is why you should spend most of your time practicing inside 100 yards with an emphasis on wedges and putting.

What is Tiger Woods swing tempo?

Tiger’s swing speed has changed over the years, especially since his early days of swinging a driver with a steel shaft! In those days Tiger was lashing at the ball unlike any other golf on the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, due to his injuries he’s slowed down a bit but some might argue he has better tempo than ever.

Like all elite players, Tiger Woods has a 3-1 tempo; meaning his backswing is 3X as long as his downswing. If you watched the Match at the end of 2022 you could see Tiger still had plenty of speed and often hit it longer than Justin Thomas or Jordan Speith. Pretty impressive for someone who is nearly 50 years old!

Is 120 swing speed good?

Yes, a 120 mph clubhead speed is more than good – it’s more than the PGA Tour average. Anything over 100mph in terms of clubhead speed is an incredible feat for amateur golfers.

It’s important to understand that swing speed is different from ball speed. According to  Trackman Golf  the average ball speed is 132 mph with only 93.4 mph swing speed.

If you’re interested in increasing speed to hit it longer it’s a good idea to invest in a launch monitor. These small devices make it easy to measure your carry distance, swing speed, ball speed, and other metrics.

Click here to learn more about the best launch monitors in golf.

Should my backswing be fast or slow?

Faster than you think. I learned the advice “low and slow” when I started playing/practicing at the driving range and think it can hurt your game. If you take a slow backswing you will have to speed up eventually… which often leads to a rushed transition.

Instead of thinking slowly on the way back, think smooth, control tempo. This will help you speed up your backswing and ultimately create more clubhead speed. Which will translate to more power and longer shots with every club in the bag.

If you struggle with a rushed transition, experiment with different backswing times to see how it impacts your ball striking. It’s also a good idea to download the app Tour Tempo so you can sequence your swing more effectively.

Final Thoughts on Short Game Tempo

Tempo is a critical ingredient in your golf swing but it does change for your short game. Since short game shots are much closer to the hole, you don’t need a long, fluid swing.

While the proper tempo for a full swing is 3:1,  the ideal tempo for your short game is 2:1.  A quick tempo will lead to more consistency and better chip shots. Start practicing these now to see fast results!

Invest in an app like Tour Tempo or a metronome you can easily train your swing for better timing. This will make it easier to get the ball up and down to save tons of shots around the green. Whether you’re chipping, pitching, or hitting bunker shots, think about a 2:1 tempo to hit it better than ever.

Apple Watch

Tempo now lets you add custom scheduled workouts to the apple watch workout app.

Avatar for Zac Hall

One of the wonderful things about relying on indie developers to make great apps is the fact that they almost always adopt new features on day one. Take Tempo 5 for example. Apple just released iOS 17 and watchOS 10 with a new custom workout feature for developers, and Tempo has already baked in support for planning and add custom run, walk, and hike workouts.

One of the many new developer tools in iOS 17 and watchOS 10 is WorkoutKit. This lets developers add the ability to create custom workouts from their apps for the Workout app on Apple Watch.

Custom workouts based on a training schedule is just the kind of feature Tempo users have needed. Apple has now made it possible for developers to build this without making a whole new app from scratch – and it works with the Apple Watch Workout app.

From the Tempo 5 announcement today:

We are delighted to introduce Custom Workouts and Training Planner in Tempo. This new feature enables better planning of workouts and allows Tempo to also help with the pre-workout phase of the training routine. Tempo uses the latest  WorkoutKit  framework introduced with  iOS 17  and  watchOS 10  to add and schedule workouts to Apple’s robust Workout app on the Apple Watch.

Tempo has always been a fantastic way to take control of your run/walk/hike workout data with privacy in mind. The new Custom Workouts and Training Planner feature now lets you take your data and build your own workouts. These can be based on your personal training schedule. This provides a hyper personalized experience in Workout app on Apple Watch!

Tempo announces new Apple Watch integration

Avatar for Colin Jenkins

Tempo Home Fitness Studio has officially announced their new Apple Watch integration. The Tempo Studio uses 3D sensors with on-demand and live classes to track reps and provide real-time feedback. With their new Apple partnership, Tempo members can now use the Apple Watch to track their heart rate, pause and resume workouts, view the leaderboard, and more.

The new integration of Tempo and the Apple Watch is the first of its kind for a connected fitness product. While some other equipment, like the Peloton Bike+ , offers Apple Watch support through Apple Gym Kit, that support is limited and does not work when the user gets off the bike for strength or bootcamp classes.

In fact, it seems that Tempo does not even need Apple Gym Kit to provide this extensive integration. Data from the Apple Watch is used by the Tempo app and is then sent over Wi-Fi to the Tempo Studio. By using this workaround, Tempo is not only able to use the Apple Watch for heart rate data but also adds additional functionality like pausing the workout.

The ability to pause the workout from your watch is actually a huge improvement since pausing and changing weights is often done numerous times throughout a Tempo workout. I have always wished I could do this from where I was working out without having to walk 6 feet to the screen each time. Now with the new Apple Watch integration, changing weights will be a smoother and quicker process.

Connect the Apple Watch with your Tempo:

  • Make sure your iPhone, Apple Watch, and Tempo are all connected to the same Wi-Fi network and that you have both your iPhone and Apple Watch near your Tempo.
  • Make sure you are logged in to your profile on your Tempo.
  • Download and open the Tempo app on your Apple Watch.
  • Follow the on-screen steps on your iPhone.
  • Once all steps are completed, your Apple Watch should be synced with your Tempo!

Note: To make sure that your data is being accurately recorded, please check that your Apple Watch and iPhone are always nearby when you’re training and on the same Wi-Fi network.

Apple Watch now syncs with Tempo's AI-powered home gym

Tempo owners can monitor their heart rate and control their workouts from the wearable..

Tempo has rolled out Apple Watch integration for its AI-powered home gym, giving users an easy way to track their heart rate during workouts without the need for a dedicated HR monitor. Upon syncing the wearable, users can also view other data on it, including how many calories they burned during studio classes, the total volume of weights they lifted and their ranking on the leaderboard.

The company says 70 percent of its users own an iPhone, and 35 percent from that group has an Apple Watch. With that in mind, rolling out Apple integration for its product is a no-brainer. In addition to being able to view stats and data, syncing their Watch will also give users the capability to pause and resume classes, as well as to manage their workouts, without having to walk up to the smart home gym's touchscreen panel.

Tempo launched its Studio home gym cabinet, which includes a touchscreen panel, a 3D camera track workouts, weights and other equipment, in early 2020. The pandemic brought about a need for home workout solutions as gyms around the world closed down, and Tempo was one of the companies that experienced a surge in demand. In April, the company raised $220 million in funding to be able to keep up with an increasing number of orders and give its research and development efforts a boost.

Those who already have a Tempo Studio and want to sync it with an Apple Watch will have to make sure both devices, along with their iPhone, are connected to the same WiFi network. All three have to be near each other, as well. After they've logged into their profile on the Tempo Studio and download the app for the Watch, they only need to follow the steps laid out on their iPhone.

Tour Tempo Frame Counter Golf 4+

Analyze, compare & share swing.

Description.

Tour Tempo Frame Counter - Golf Swing Video Analysis - Analyze, Compare & Share It’s a proven fact that matching your tempo to that of the PGA Tour Pros with the internationally acclaimed Tour Tempo Tones is a way to instantly improve your golf swing. The first thing you need to do is find the current tempo ratio of your swing. The Tour Tempo Frame Counter App is the easiest and quickest way to do that, because it allows you to view and count sport action video, specifically the golf swing, by advancing the video one frame at a time. Once you have the tempo ratio of your swing, you then can compare it to the tempo ratio of your favorite PGA Tour Pro. To understand why you need the Tour Tempo Frame Counter App, it's important to know what Tour Tempo is: Tour Tempo is the name of the international best selling golf book that explained how amateur golfers could dramatically improve their ball striking – instantly, in most cases – by copying the tempo of the Tour Pros. It outlined the discovery of a specific mathematical ratio regarding the elapsed time of the backswing and the elapsed time of the downswing of the Tour Pros. By using this correct ratio, Tour Tempo allows you to learn how to correctly integrate the Tempo of the Tour Pros into your golf swing – both the Long Game and the Short Game. The Tour Tempo System is simple and easy to learn. All you do is react to three scientifically spaced musical notes. These musical notes alert you to start your takeaway, start your downswing, and then the third note lines you up with impact. It’s just that easy. It is used by beginners through Major Championship winners on the PGA Tour, and has been validated by an Independent Scientific Study by the Departments of Physics and Biomechanics at Yale University. Furthermore, the Titleist Performance Institute’s 3D research data accumulated from the swings of the Tour Pros also confirms the results of the Yale University study. And they also added that “Tour Tempo is the only golf training aid that has been validated by an independent scientific study.” "It will be the best thing that you will ever do for your game." - Pat Dempsey, 2002 RE/MAX World Long Drive Sr. Champion "You will get better right away! When you synch your swing to that of the Tour Pros with Tour Tempo, you’ll get better right now!" - Dan Rooney, PGA Teaching Professional "No one has ever come up with a way to teach Tempo until now." - Travel + Leisure Golf In order to improve your tempo, it is helpful to learn what your swing tempo is and have an easy way to track it as you go along. That’s where the Frame Counter App comes in. There are three important points in the swing used to determine tempo – the start of the takeaway, start of your downswing, and then when the clubhead arrives at impact. The Frame Counter App makes it easy to quickly determine your tempo on the range or on the course. (This app does not contain the Tour Tempo Tones - take a look at our Total Game App that contains the Tones If you are interested in learning more about the Tour Tempo Training system.) Find your Tour Tempo now with the Frame Counter app.

Version 1.3

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon. Optimized for latest iOS and bug fixes.

Awesome app.

The Amplifier

The ultimate charli xcx primer.

Prep for the arrival of her new album, “Brat,” with 11 songs from her catalog (and 10 bonus tracks!).

An orange dotted line.

By Lindsay Zoladz

Dear listeners,

I don’t think there’s a single song I’ve listened to more over the past few weeks than “360,” the endlessly quotable, deliriously catchy synth-pop song by one of my favorite working pop stars, Charli XCX .

I believe that most great pop music strikes a precise equilibrium between the smart and the stupid, and few artists working today understand that balance more intuitively than the 31-year-old English singer-songwriter born Charlotte Aitchison, whose rich and prolific career I’m celebrating with today’s playlist. Charli’s back catalog is deep and some of her songs can be as self-referential as an episode of “Arrested Development,” so ahead of the release of her highly anticipated album “Brat” on Friday, here’s a chance to catch up.

I first heard Charli’s music in 2011, when I was hypnotized by her early single “Stay Away,” a dark and immersive ballad that sounded like a photo negative of T’Pau’s 1987 bubble gum jam “Heart and Soul.” (I sequenced those two tracks back-to-back on an iPod playlist I listened to incessantly that summer.) Two years later, “Stay Away” appeared on Charli’s debut full-length, “True Romance,” a brilliant pop album that should have been as big as, say, Katy Perry’s “Prism” or Miley Cyrus’s “Bangerz” (to name two giants of 2013) but failed to break through beyond a small but fervent cult fan base that came to be known as (what else?) Charli’s Angels.

Over the past decade, that fan base has grown, and Charli has come to occupy her own unique space somewhere between the A-list and the underground. She’s had flirtations with mainstream success, usually as a featured artist (her brash hook was the best part of Iggy Azalea ’s 2014 smash “Fancy” ) or a songwriter (you can hear her voice in the mix of Icona Pop ’s 2012 anthem “I Love It,” which she helped write). But Charli has ultimately remained a little too adventurous and uncompromising for superstardom. As she put it in a recent profile for British GQ with characteristic shrugging candor, “I know that if I suffered in silence, pushed through it and didn’t say what was on my mind, and maybe got like a brow lift or whatever, I could probably operate in a more commercial world.” The singles from “Brat” find her sounding more comfortable and creatively fulfilled than ever in that middle ground. As she puts it on the kinetic “Von Dutch,” “Cult classic but I still pop.”

This playlist is a chronological tour through Charli XCX’s many eras, from her time as a precocious club kid to her more recent reign as a forward-thinking pop experimentalist. Her discography is loads of fun but it can also be overwhelming, so if you’ve previously been intimidated by it, consider this a road map. I had such a hard time whittling this playlist down to 11 tracks, though, that I’ve included 10 more recommendations in the Bonus Tracks, if you’re wondering where to go next.

In the meantime, grab the keys to your lavender Lamborghini, fill it up with a thousand pink balloons and get ready to party, Charli-style.

I’m your favorite reference, baby,

Listen along while you read.

1. “nuclear seasons”.

Let’s start at the very beginning, with this lush opening track from Charli’s 2013 debut “True Romance.” Representative of the ’80s-inspired sounds and emotional melodrama that define that album, “Nuclear Seasons” depicts a heartbreak so brutal and all-encompassing that it just might be radioactive. ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

2. “Stay Away”

The first Charli song I ever heard and still one of my all-time favorites, this Ariel Rechtshaid-produced ballad is full of moody atmosphere and doomed romance: “Do you remember when I said, that first time we met, ‘Stay away,’” Charli croons on the chorus. “Why couldn’t you stay away?”

▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

3. “SuperLove”

Though she’s put out quite a few classic albums and memorable mixtapes, Charli’s discography is also peppered with some excellent one-off singles, like this giddy, effervescent bop released in late 2013. Those handclaps!

4. “Breaking Up”

In the summer of 2014, Charli had her biggest solo hit yet with the dreamy “Boom Clap.” Rather than trying to replicate its formula, her subsequent album, “Sucker,” was full of sassy pop-punk and iconoclastic lyrics (the leadoff title track even included a prescient jab at the pop producer of that moment, Dr. Luke). One of my favorite “Sucker” songs is this glammy kiss-off, which takes a hilariously blithe approach to a relationship’s demise: “Everything was wrong with you, so breaking up was easy to do.”

5. “Vroom Vroom”

This sleek and brazenly minimalist 2016 single represents a pivotal turning point in Charli’s career, when she stopped chasing pop success and veered off into her own lane. She also found some simpatico new collaborators in the PC Music collective, including A.G. Cook and the visionary artist Sophie , who co-produced her experimental “Vroom Vroom” EP.

Another irresistible one-off single, from 2017, this chiming, tongue-in-cheek ode to daydreaming about boys ( *Super Mario coin noise* ) featured a playful, star-studded music video .

7. “Unlock It (Lock It)” (featuring Kim Petras and Jay Park)

To date, I’d say Charli’s full-length masterpiece is “Pop 2,” an imaginative and futuristic 10-song mixtape that balanced her most outré sensibilities with infectious melodies. It was also highly collaborative, co-produced with Cook and chock-full of featured artists. The then-rising star Kim Petras and the K-pop rapper Jay Park make cameos on this highlight, which captures the bubbly apprehension of a crush.

8. “Gone” (featuring Christine and the Queens)

Speaking of apprehension, this 2019 duet with the French singer Christine and the Queens tackles an experience that you don’t often hear depicted in a pop song: the chill of social anxiety. As Charli put it on Instagram at the time, “This song is about breaking down but it’s also about breaking free. It feels like one big external scream.”

9. “Party 4 U”

During the early days of Covid lockdowns, Charli began a livestream series that allowed her fans to watch as she worked on a new album she would eventually title “How I’m Feeling Now.” The particular emotional experience of the pandemic combined with this creative transparency resulted in some of Charli’s most vulnerable music yet. I’m partial to this melancholic, mid-tempo track, which weaves various Auto-Tuned melodies into a colorful sonic tapestry.

10. “Constant Repeat”

Charli streamlined her sound for the 2022 release “Crash,” which she described with dry knowingness as her “major-label sellout” album. For all the conceptualism, though, “Crash” briefly brought Charli back into the mainstream that had long eluded her: It became her first No. 1 album in the United Kingdom and her first to hit the Top 10 in the United States.

Finally, here’s the one I’ve got on constant repeat right now: the wryly funny, self-mythologizing opening track from “Brat,” featuring an instantly iconic music video that places Charli among her fellow underground It Girls like Chloë Sevigny and Rachel Sennott. “I went my own way and I made it,” she sings at the beginning. Now you know.

Bonus Tracks

Here, in chronological order, are 10 honorable mentions that almost made the cut: “Take My Hand,” “Sucker,” “Out of My Head,” “Track 10,” “Focus,” “No Angel,” “Next Level Charli,” “Forever,” “Lightning,” “New Shapes” … wait, that’s already 10?!

Air's Moon Safari is an era-defining French album worth celebrating, 25 years on

Air's Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin as illustrated on the cover of their 1998 deut album Moon Safari

There's no telling how many special moments have been soundtracked by Moon Safari, the acclaimed 1998 debut album from French duo Air.

An era-defining record of pristine, space-age lounge music delivered with cinematic atmosphere and a distinctively French je ne se quios , Moon Safari was a universal critical and commercial success upon release.

The lush easy-listening music was perfectly suited to post-club comedowns, hip cafes, and make-out sessions: smooth and dreamy enough to be played in the background, but singular and masterfully crafted enough to reward close listening.

It proved highly influential, too. But the wave of mellow, down tempo imitators and 'chill out' CD compilations it spawned struggled to surpass Air's chic, exquisitely woozy beauty.

'It was not meant to be played live'

Jean-Benoît Dunckel, one half of Air alongside Nicolas Godin, never expected Moon Safari's enduring success.

"We never imagined this album could work that way worldwide," he tells Karen Leng on Double J Lunch.

"It took time, it took decades, [but] the success is not by us, the audience made [it]."

This year, the duo has been playing Moon Safari in full around the world on their first tour in seven years, including Australia.

"It was not made to be played live," says Dunckel.

"We had to adapt it for the live [setting]. That is what the people want to get — this special feeling they heard the first time… to live again these feelings."

Having played two nights at the Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid Live , Air will live-stream their show at London's Royal Albert Hall this weekend.

"It's a beautiful venue," says Dunckel, who is keen to preserve a pristine performance of the album online for future access.

"It's really important to do that because… people can also discover the band live. Some people appreciate the live versions more than the recorded versions."

Performing as a trio, alongside drummer Louis Delorme, Air play inside an oblong box adorned with dazzling lights and visuals, which morph from swathes of minimalist colour to the perspective of a spaceship enjoying interstellar travel.

"We play in a box of light. It looks a bit like the studio on the cover of 10 000 Hz Legend," says Dunckel, referencing the band's second studio album — a weirder, wilder reaction to Moon Safari.

Air perform on Sydney Opera House stage with visuals of a ship in hyperspace behind them.

"It could be a home, it could be our world, our head, our architectural concept. It helps for people to enter into a world… people like [that] intimacy."

Dunckel says people often ask: "Are you not bored to play these songs you play for 20 years now?"

"Sometimes I struggle — because you have to concentrate, and you have to play. But I'm never bored. It's always a pleasure."

Moon Safari is a product of its era, but it's also aged beautifully.

It's an evocative listening experience, from the moment lengthy opener 'La femme d'argent' ushers you in with the sounds of water and slinky bassline, through to the weightless pop and robot-voiced melodies of 'Kelly Watch The Stars' and 'New Star in the Sky'.

In 1998, its retro-futuristic arrangements already sounded timeless. 25 years later, its ability to transport your mind and imagination elsewhere hasn't dated one iota.

"It could be a journey, a love story," remarks Dunckel. "That's why we're really attached to it. I think the audience is searching for that, too.

"It helps human relationships in every way," adds Dunckel. Over the years, Air fans have shared "so many stories" of what the album means to them.

"Most of the time it's for love. It's always, 'I met my girlfriend or wife this time'."

Back in 1998, Dunckel told triple j that while hiking in Iceland, his guide revealed Moon Safari was his love-making soundtrack.

There's "probably" plenty of babies in the world with some of the album's DNA in them since, Dunckel estimates of a new generation discovering Air for the first time.

"As we are getting old now, it's becoming that people say, 'oh yeah, my parents were listening to Moon Safari when we were travelling in a car; this family time'."

Sexy Boy, the surprising queer anthem

For many, debut single 'Sexy Boy' was their first introduction to Air. A seductive slice of synth-pop that brought vocoder back to the pop charts and sung in both French and English.

It's a seemingly simple song but Dunckel notes there's "a lot of tolerance and freedom" embedded in it.

"Sexy Boy, first of all, is a strange title because it breaks a certain taboo. The taboo is that heterosexual boys can check out other boys," he explains.

"Also, it became a gay slogan in a way. A gay anthem."

The song took on a new meaning in late 90s Paris when the electronic music scene's wider acceptance of the LGTBQI+ community led to more club and techno nights dedicated to queer punters and DJs emerging.

"There was a lot of gay parties," says Dunckel. "Homosexuality is everywhere in the world, and it's always existed, always there. So, it was important to liberate this movement."

Originally, the song's titular phrase was inspired by Parisian fashion culture.

"People are checking each other out all the time… In Paris, when a couple is meeting another couple, the girl is not going to check out the boy. She's going to check out the other girl: analyse what she wears, how she behaves, what is the fashion or type of the boyfriend.

"Sexy Boy is speaking about that. The fact a man wants to be a pretty man and he is checking [out] other boys."

A popular soundtrack choice, featured in teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You and noughties TV drama Queer As Folk, 'Sexy Boy' is also a testament to youth.

The French verses are "celebrating that golden age of being young," Dunckel explains.

"When you're young you don't realise you're at the top of your life. You have a lot of power, actually… because you're beautiful. Your skin, hair, you feel great, you have a lot of energy."

The makings of a classic

Despite its iconic status, Moon Safari was actually the last roll of the dice for Dunckel and Godin.

Raised in the conservative suburb of Versailles, the pair began making music together after meeting at school. But after having their demo tapes rejected by every record label they approached, they quit music and instead focused on their studies.

Each had established careers — Godin in architecture, Dunckel in mathematics — when an opportunity presented itself in a close friend landing a role with Virgin Records imprint Source.

They landed a deal with the label but ditching their jobs for a full-time career in music to support their burgeoning families was a gamble.

black and white portrait of French duo Air: Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel

"We were 26 years old. We were not sure we come be musicians for the rest of our life," remembers Dunckel. "I was already working [as] a physics teacher… I had a baby."

Thankfully, their risk was rewarded when their debut album became a breakout international hit. Air was swiftly lumped alongside a fresh wave of Parisian artists reinventing the electronic music scene in the late 90s.

Dubbed French touch, the movement included Cassius, St. Germain, Étienne de Crécy, and Daft Punk, who recorded their breakout 1997 album Homework down the street from where Air made Moon Safari.

"There was a kind of energy circulating all over Paris," recalls Dunckel. "Paris is kind of small; all the media, artists and business part of it [were] working all together."

The worlds of music, fashion, contemporary art, cinema — "everything was mixed," Dunckel says.

"At this time, new generations of young people coming from the suburbs are even inside Paris and mixing all these rich, futuristic concepts together with new machines, samplers, computer programs to make music."

A fond farewell to youth

Despite being poster boys for the future of French music, Moon Safari was an evocative, nostalgia-drenched ode to Dunckel and Godin's past.

"In a way it was the end of my youth… That's why the songs [on Moon Safari], there are a lot of regrets and it's a goodbye to our youth and the innocence of it.

"It's full of vibrations from teenage times."

Although labelled an electronic act, Air's music wasn't rooted in beats and house music. Instead, they armed themselves with analogue Moog and Korg synthesizers, vintage drum machines, vocoders and the trusty Rhodes piano.

The resulting compositions bore the esprit of Serge Gainsbourg, electronic pioneers like Jean-Michel Jarre, and the 1970s film and TV soundtracks of Dunckel's childhood.

There's a fondness for the psychedelic grandeur of Pink Floyd and ELO. But also, Burt Bacharach arrangements, particularly in the wistful French horn topline of ''Ce matin là' (This morning) and the easy-going 'You Make It Easy' and 'All I Need', both featuring the lyrics and vocals of Godin's then-neighbour, Beth Hirsch.

From its lush, otherworldly sounds right down to its title, Moon Safari gives rise to cosmic ideas and conducive to escapism. That spirit is central to Air's entire ethos.

"I think music exists in paradise and you can feel this [album] is in a strange interface between our world and something else."

Such ephemeral expressions might be surprising coming from a former physics teacher, but Dunckel says "both sides of your brain help" when it comes to making emotive art.

"There is a mathematic aspect of music, that analyses and helps you perform and conceive music. But there is something else happening, your heart is talking.

"As a musician you're organising the vibrations of your heart and the feelings into music… vibrations travelling into space and air."

"When I do a song, it's all about 'what do I feel?'" Dunckel concludes.

"For me, good means it affects me. No good means I don't feel anything… if it affects me, it's going to affect others, too. They're going to feel the feelings I do, too."
