Zoopla adds new ‘how long is my journey’ tool to searches

Zoopla has added a new search feature to its website, allowing users to search for properties based on the travel time from a selected property to any designated location such as a place of work, school or family member’s home.

The new feature enables journey times to be calculated to any particular location via a variety of transport methods including train, bus, driving, cycling and walking.

Once a user selects their chosen locations and preferred method of transport, each search result displays the travel time to those locations.

Lawrence Hall, head of communications at Zoopla, said: “We are always looking to innovate and add new and useful tools for consumers to help them make smarter property decisions.

“Commute times and distance to a particular location are a key consideration for any home mover and we’re delighted to be the first major property portal to add this feature.”

Should I book a cruise online? Here's what to know.

travel time zoopla

  • Travelers can book cruises online through the cruise line or third-party sites.
  • Booking online offers convenience, but there can be some drawbacks.
  • Travelers who need help with their booking may have to contact the cruise line or third-party site.

Travelers can buy almost anything they need for a cruise online, from flip-flops to sunscreen to the trip itself.

Many travelers book cruises through travel agents, but that’s not necessarily the right move for everyone. “Some people don't want to deal with people,” said Joanna Kuther, a New York City-based travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants. “They want to go online. They don't want to have one conversation.”

But with seemingly endless search results and websites vying for prospective guests’ attention in ads, the experience can be overwhelming. And while booking online offers convenience, there can be some drawbacks.

What are the best websites to book a cruise online?

When booking online, Kuther recommended going directly through the cruise line – if you know which one you want to sail with.

Travelers can easily browse itineraries, the line’s ships and their layouts, and other add-ons and promotions offered. If customers reserve other aspects of their trip, like flights, directly through the line, they will also have greater protection in the event of disruptions.

Cruise booking tips: There's more to it than picking your travel dates

“So if there's a cancellation or a delay, it's their job to get you to that ship,” Kuther said. “That's their commitment.” However, she noted that travelers may not have as many choices as when booking their flights themselves. (Cruise lines often have in-house vacation planners who are familiar with the brand.)

Travelers can book cruises via third-party sites as well and may be able to find deals doing so. Booking.com introduced a cruise option late last year, allowing travelers to book sailings, flights and hotels in one place. Other sites like Expedia and Orbitz also offer the category, and there are cruise-specific sites as well like Cruisebound.com and Cruise.com.

Those can also offer a comprehensive way to see what cruises are out there. Brandon O. Smith, who runs the YouTube channel The Weekend Cruiser , said Vacations To Go’s search function is particularly good. Many travelers also like Costco Travel because it’s “kind of built into their ecosystem,” he added.

Travelers booking through online travel agencies may have to pay fees that cruise lines do not charge, however, Smith said.

What if I need help with my booking?

Customers who book online on their own may have to contact the cruise line or third-party site when they have questions or issues, and the customer representative’s familiarity with the kind of trip they’re taking might vary. “And I think that's one of the big shortcomings,” Smith said.

Some travelers who have used third-party booking sites have had to jump through hoops to get help when their plans have gone awry.

Should first-time cruisers book a cruise online?

There is a wide range of lines and ships that cater to different types of vacations.

( click here for USA TODAY’s cruise line guide).

Smith recommended new cruisers work with a travel agent who can help them determine what kind of voyage is right for them. “Word of mouth is a great way to find people, and finding people who know your style of cruising,” he said. “So, if you're a family of five, you want to find somebody that's familiar with looking for larger families.”

If a traveler is looking for highly personalized advice, he said, “You're not going to get that through an online booking tool.”

Khabarovsk Krai occupies a long swathe of Russia's Pacific coastline, a full 2000 kilometers of it, going as far south as Sakhalin and north to Magadan Oblast . At nearly 800.000 km², it's Russias fourth largest province. In the north, taiga and tundra prevail, deciduous forests in the south, and swampy forests in the central areas around Nikolaevsk-on-Amur . As a testament to its size there are more than 50 thousand lakes to fish in, more rivers and streams than you would care to count, and several mountain ranges intersect the region, including the northern reaches of the Sikhote-Alin mountains shared with Primorsky krai. The highest point is Mount Bery, towering nearly in fact, three quarters of the area is occupied by mountains and plateaus.

V isiting the Eternal City for the first time? Rome is one of the most visited cities in Italy and we created an easy travel guide to Rome so that you know the best things to see and do.

How to Get Around Rome

Getting around the cobbled-stoned streets of Rome is not hard. I’ve walked, biked, and bused throughout Rome and loved it! All are great ways to get around and the method you choose depends on how much time you have and your personal preference.

I recommend the  Big Bus Tour  or a Golf Cart Tour in Rome if you are short on time or if you booked your travel in the dead heat of summer (which can be intensely hot).

With these tours, you’ll see all the top Rome attractions with audio commentary in your language of choice. If you choose an open top tour bus, the added benefit is free wi-fi and for 3 extra euros, you can use your ticket for two days (it is worth it).

When it comes to seeing Rome, walking can not be avoided especially when getting to an attraction that require climbing hilly pathways or navigating ancient streets. In my opinion, being on foot is one of the best ways to travel in Rome.

Exploring the narrow streets can lead you to the most marvelous pasta, the creamiest gelato, or the most perfect pasta! I highly recommend visiting the Trastevere neighborhood for  Italian street food .

Public Transportation

This is the best option for getting to a part of town that is more than 20 minutes on foot, especially if visiting a museum or park. Save your energy and use public transportation for less than 2 euros. You can purchase them at the tobacconist store.

You will need to validate your ticket upon boarding the bus (it’s an honor system). Getting caught with an un-validated ticket can result in a fine. You should also use a really good map of Rome.

Bike or Vespa

Peddling around the city on your own time feels so liberating. Bike rental is very affordable and is an enjoyable way to experience the outdoors, get some exercise to make up for all the  Italian breakfasts  that you eat, and explore Rome.

You can find rentals for as little as 13 euros for 24 hours, complete with lock, for a standard bike. The price for e-bikes is higher.

Getting around on a two-passenger scooter is loads of fun!  Rent a Vespa to skirt traffic or explore outside the city. They can be rented by the hour or day. This will make your trip to Rome memorable as you travel in true Italian style!

How to Get to Central Rome from FCO Airport

There are several options to get from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the center of the city. I found the train to be the quickest and most affordable especially if you’ve had a long day of travel and want to get to Termini station.

The most economical way to get from the airport to the city center is via a shuttle bus service from the airport. You can travel conveniently between Rome’s city center and the airport and take pleasure in a stress-free arrival or departure from the city.

The ride takes about 50 minutes and departures run from the airport every 30 to 40 minutes so you have time to collect your luggage. Shuttles stop in Terminal 3’s arrivals section. Look for the respective service at the arrival platform.

Terravision offers a shuttle service for less than 8 euros it’s quite popular. The buses are air-conditioned and there is no cost to bring your luggage aboard. It goes directly to Termini station with no extra stops.

Another option is the public transportation system, which costs about 6 euros. The bus stops multiple times in the city center, including one close to the Vatican and one at Termini Station, throughout the 45- to 1-hour one-way trip.

Buses halt in Terminal 3’s arrivals section, at number 14. You can purchase tickets at the airport desk or online.

A taxi is quite expensive. It will set you back almost 50 euros and the ride takes just as long as a shuttle service (about 50 minutes). You can find the taxis at the arrival level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The Leonardo Express train is less than 20 euros and runs every 15 minutes during peak periods. It is operated by Trenitalia and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

If you wait to collect your luggage, and then make your way to the window or kiosk to purchase your ticket, note that many others will be doing the same. Hate long lines? You can purchase tickets in advance and be ready for validation after boarding the train.

I can’t recommend a car rental unless you plan a day trip and need a set of wheels. Rome is completely walkable. Not to mention, even Italians know that finding a parking space can be a hassle.

Tips for Visiting Rome

I adore visiting Italy. And no trip would be complete without seeing some of the most iconic and historic spots in the Eternal City.

Don’t make the mistake (that I made on my first trip) and skip these incredible spots! Fortunately, I was able to see them on return visits!

Whether you are visiting the Vatican for the first time or returning because you tossed a coin into the Trevi fountain, these Rome travel tips will come in handy to make your stay enjoyable.

  • Be prepared! Read these tips on the essentials for an international flight .
  • Think comfort when flying coach , it will help you stay calm and confident.

For a safer travel experience, Dubai’s security police have issued a travel advisory

DUBAI AIRPORT RAIN

Dubai: Planning a trip through Dubai Airport? Avoid last-minute hassles by familiarising yourself with their security guidelines.

Dubai Airport Security Police have issued an updated travel advisory to ensure safe travel for all passengers.

Get exclusive content with Gulf News WhatsApp channel

Brigadier Hamouda Balsuwaida Al Ameri, Director of the General Department of Airport Security at Dubai Police, advises travellers to familiarise themselves with the guidelines before their flight.

He said that Dubai prioritises passenger safety, so regulations exist for items allowed in your carry-on luggage. “By understanding these rules, you can ensure a smooth and efficient security check,” he added.

Top Tips for a seamless security experience

Following security protocols demonstrates trust in the staff and ultimately safeguards everyone. Here’s how to make your experience a breeze:

• Minimise Metal: Opt for minimal metal accessories. Remove them before inspection and place them in the designated tray.

• Pack Smart for Electronics : Carry no more than the permitted 15 mobile phones in their original packaging. Leaving them unpackaged risks confiscation due to lithium battery concerns.

• Liquids: Limit liquids in your carry-on to containers of 100ml or less, if necessary.

• Banned Items: Sharp objects, lighters, flammable materials, and toy weapons are strictly prohibited in your carry-on.

• Minimise Congestion: Limit the number of people accompanying you to the airport to avoid crowding.

• Unattended Luggage : Leaving your luggage unattended is a security breach. Keep it with you at all times.

• Helping Others : Avoid carrying bags for unfamiliar individuals. You could unknowingly become involved in smuggling.

• Medical Needs: If you have prescribed medications or implanted medical devices, have the prescription readily available on request.

• Luggage : Do not leave your luggage unattended for any reason to comply with international laws and regulations.

• Avoid carrying bags for unknown individuals to prevent potential involvement in smuggling illegal or hazardous materials, leading to legal consequences.

• — If carrying medications, ensure they are accompanied by a prescription and be prepared to present it upon request.

  • Eid Al Adha weekend weather: Hot, dusty weather in UAE, chance of rain in Fujairah and Al Ain
  • Dubai promises safe and joyful Eid Al Adha celebrations with compressive security plan
  • Eid Al Adha 2024: Dubai reveals massive Eid cleanup plan, BBQ ban in green areas
  • Eid Al Adha prayer timings announced in the UAE

Weather Considerations

During unpredictable weather, your safe arrival remains our top priority.

• Follow Instructions: Heed the guidance of security personnel on the roads leading to and around the airport.

• Arrive Early: Give yourself ample time (at least 3 hours) to avoid missing your flight due to last-minute delays or the urge to speed.

• Farewell Logistics: Minimise goodbyes with well-wishers at the airport to maintain smooth traffic flow.

Here are the best and worst times to travel for Fourth of July

Whether you're flying or driving, we have intel—plus, what to book last-minute

Erika Mailman

We’ve waited for it all year, and summer travel is here! People are checking out of work, kids are saying “check you later” to their teachers, and packing up their suitcases. No one’s setting alarms unless if it’s to catch the next train. Expedia  reports that things are heating up for fellow travelers on the road and in the air. In fact, the week leading up to the Fourth of July is going to be busy and expensive. Prepare yourself!

Here’s some data to help. Usually, the Friday before July 4 makes for the highest ticket price of the summer. But this year, July 4 falls on a Thursday, which complicates things. Instead, it’s Wednesday the 3rd that’s going to be that wild travel day with a few too many people trying to do the same thing: turn it into an extra long weekend. Besides that, Saturday, June 29 is going to be zoo-ish: try departing on July 1 or 2 instead. And for the return, Sunday, July 7 is the busiest day, so plan for July 5 or 8 instead. And in order to get the best deal for airfare, Expedia recommends booking 21-60 days in advance, which means you will want to book by June 13. That’s…well, it’s tomorrow. Get on it!

If you’re looking to find a deal for your flight, the best deals for that long weekend (departing July 3 and returning July 7) are here, based on data collection on June 5. Prices may have changed, so check before booking:

Los Angeles to Austin, TX: $253 (25 percent lower than usual)

JFK to Miami: $307 (25 percent lower than usual)

Seattle to San Diego: $286 (30 percent lower than usual)

Chicago to Palm Beach: $258 (50 percent lower than usual)

Orlando to Newark: $192 (50 percent lower than usual)

Right now, for the timeframe June 29 to July 7, Expedia shows that the most popular flight destinations here in the U.S. are New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Orlando. The most domestic lodging searches (which you might think would match but don’t) are for Dallas and New Orleans. If you like being in the trending spots, that’s where to go. Or alternately, maybe you would actively avoid these busy cities.

A few final tips we hope will help: First, book a morning flight. It’s 50 percent less likely to be canceled than a flight that departs after 3pm. Get to the airport earlier than you think you need to: you might have to troll the parking lot to find a space for your car given the hordes of other people trying also to park, plus you’ll need more time to get through security. TSA recommends getting there two hours ahead of time for a domestic flight. If you can get away with minimal packing, avoid checking a bag and keep everything in your carry-on. You won’t have to go through that check-in line and can go straight through security so long as you have your boarding pass, and then on to your gate.

If you’re driving for the holiday as opposed to flying, start your trip on Wednesday morning and try not to drive on Sunday, July 7. Good luck, everyone, and be safe!

Unlocking 3x More Conversions: How Zoopla Transformed Property Search with TravelTime

5 minute read

Zoopla , one of the biggest names in the world of property websites, embarked on a transformative journey to enhance the property search experience for its users.

Central to their success was the integration of TravelTime , a groundbreaking API that redefined property search parameters to focus on personalisation through time-based location insights.

Perfecting the personalised property search

Creating a high-converting property website or app is a complex task.

The key lies in connecting potential buyers or renters with property listings that match their unique criteria. However, this challenge becomes complex when considering the diverse factors that influence a property choice.

Zoopla, one of the UK’s leading property websites, recognised that one critical factor for homeowners and renters is commute time data.

Property seekers were not only looking for homes - they were looking for residences that provided an optimal commute to their frequently visited and most important locations, such as offices, schools, green spaces, or family homes.

Traditionally, property search platforms rely on distance-based search parameters. But Zoopla chose to revolutionise this approach, with TravelTime.

travel time zoopla

Zoopla introduced TravelTime, a groundbreaking API that empowered Zoopla to go beyond the conventional property search.

There are three key ways that TravelTime is being used by Zoopla:

1. Zoopla is embedding journey time data into every search

Instead of just asking users to select a specific location to live, Zoopla prompts them to identify their frequent travel destinations or desirable location features. Property seekers can also specify transport mode preferences and their maximum acceptable travel time to reach these destinations.

TravelTime API then harnesses this data to create a customised search area and personalises the search results ranking more effectively, answering queries like, "Find me a home within a 15-minute drive from my office."

zoopla embedded journey time data into every search

2. Zoopla is personalising every journey using Travel Time

The Single Consumer Profile unifies the data that Zoopla holds about a consumer and generates insights, providing a snapshot of their current needs and journey. 3. Zoopla is performing more intelligent property matching

Using TravelTime data, Zoopla is increasingly able to harness data science to find their property seekers the right property. Higher quality leads to agents, which enables agents to get more value from Zoopla meaning they are less likely to churn, and the end-users remember Zoopla for a great homefinding experience. Further down the road, this means that the users want to use Zoopla in future to sell their home.

zoopla performing intelligent property matching

This dynamic approach frees users from the confines of predefined neighbourhoods and knowing exactly where they want to live, offering a more personalised and flexible property search experience.

“More than 20% of property seekers don’t know where they want to live. For a very long time, we just had to hope that these users would do their own research and come back to Zoopla to perform this final search. Now, with TravelTime, we can help these users much earlier on in their property search journey, providing a more personalised discovery process based on what they need to be near, how long they want to travel, and by what transport mode.”

- Ben Amos, Senior Product Manager, Zoopla

Driving a 300% increase in conversions

The impact of TravelTime was nothing short of remarkable. Within just 10 months of its launch, Zoopla had “achieved an impressive 300% increase in conversions”.

These conversions represented users who had not only expressed interest but had taken the next step by booking viewing appointments, and is 3x higher than when using just distance.

By delivering highly relevant search results based on commute time preferences, Zoopla empowered its customers to make well-informed decisions. This newfound confidence in their property choices translated into higher conversion rates.

"We’re pleased to announce that our travel time tool has achieved an impressive 300% increase in conversions. We believe that because the results are more relevant to the quality of leads we pass to our members is higher. We’re delighted that the tools and services we provide our consumers can deliver such commercial benefits to our members."

- Matt Cohan, Chief Product Officer, Zoopla

How TravelTime works

TravelTime’s success can be attributed to its ability to filter out misleading results and present only the most relevant options to users.

For instance, the API can demonstrate that a mile’s distance in the suburbs might take only 5 minutes by car, but in a bustling city, it could be an hour-long commute—something that distance-based search methods often overlook.

Furthermore, TravelTime factors in locations with efficient transport links, even if they are physically further away. This prevents the exclusion of potentially attractive areas for prospective buyers. Chris Hutchinson, Chief Customer Officer at TravelTime, demonstrates this value: “TravelTime is uniquely positioned to deliver public transport insights, as well as driving, walking, and cycling - or a combination. This makes it more effective for the end-user, particularly when it comes to searching in a city.”
