You are here, trek, kent and others look to cambodia for production.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (BRAIN) — Cambodia, already the biggest bicycle supplier to the EU, is making up ground in the U.S. market as well due to the recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Trek Bicycle plans to move production of at least 200,000 bikes from China to Cambodia next year, according to multiple sources who spoke with BRAIN at the recent Taipei Cycle show and elsewhere. The bikes are opening-price-point models with aluminum frames and will be made at the A&J (Cambodia) factory. Since opening in Cambodia in 2006, A&J has made bikes for Bianchi, Scott, Felt, Rocky Mountain, Norco, and Kona there.

A Trek Bicycle spokesman did not reply to multiple inquiries from BRAIN to comment on the move.

The production is being shifted away from Giant Manufacturing's facilities in China. Giant Manufacturing's Irene Chen said she would not comment on Giant's OEM business, but noted that the company is focused on e-bike and high-end traditional bike manufacturing and is seeing growth in those areas.

"The overall global economy and market poses many uncertainties due to the trade war between U.S. and China," Chen said. "Giant will continue to take leverage of its Asia and European production facilities, focusing on short supply lead time and global positioning to maintain its growth opportunities in this challenging market."

Kent International also plans to move a large share of its production from China to Cambodia in the next few months. One of Kent's major Chinese suppliers is building a new, 500,000-square-foot factory in Cambodia. Kent's CEO, Arnold Kamler, said the factory will begin shipping some bikes in September 2019.

"Assuming the 25 percent tariff takes effect, the idea is to move essentially all of our production from China to Cambodia," Kamler told BRAIN. He said that to comply with U.S. Customs rules of origin, the Kent bikes from Cambodia will have at least 35 percent of their value from Cambodian parts or labor and will have Cambodia-made frames and forks.

While most of Cambodia's bike factories are near the Vietnam border in the north, the factory that Kent is working with is in the south, near the nation's capital city of Phnom Penh.

Cambodian bikes are imported in the U.S. duty-free because of the country's Generalized System of Preferences status. Bikes from most other countries (including China and Taiwan) have been historically subject to a U.S. import duty of 11 percent. With the imposition of a 10 percent tariff on Chinese bikes in September, the tariff advantage over Chinese bikes is now 21 percent. Trump's 10 percent tariff is set to increase to 25 percent in January, furthering Cambodia's head start on China.

Manufacturers are also looking to Vietnam and Indonesia as alternatives to China. And production of higher-priced bikes is shifting back to Taiwan, although that country does not have the capacity or available labor to resume supplying all the brands that moved production to China in recent years.

Europe has been ahead of the U.S. in moving bike production to Cambodia, which is now the largest bike supplier to the EU. Most bike imports into the EU are subject to a 14 percent tariff that is waived for Cambodian bikes under the EU's GSP Plus program. Under GSP Plus, the EU even waives a 14 percent tariff on the costs of shipping bikes from Cambodia. The shipping cost tariff is collected on imports from most other countries.

In Europe, there are some concerns that the European Commission could end the GSP Plus status for Cambodia because of human rights concerns. And Taiwan still has the edge on Cambodia in exports of higher-value bikes and e-bikes to Europe.

Last year, Cambodia was a distant third, behind China and Taiwan, in supplying the U.S. with bikes, as shown in the chart at the top of the page.

Despite the tariff advantage and lower labor costs, manufacturing in Cambodia remains a challenge for a number of reasons. The country lacks an industry cluster, so many components must be imported, adding to the cost and lead times. The country also lacks a deep-water port, so exporters need to use smaller feeder vessels to get inventory out of the country, adding to cost and lead times. The country has at times been politically unstable and labor strikes have shut down some factories for weeks at a time. However, companies doing business in Cambodia say those factors are improving each year.

Marc Sani contributed with reporting from Taiwan.

Cambodia is the third largest supplier to the U.S., but growing fast.

All American Made

Where Are Trek Bikes Made? 2024 Overview

' src=

As the largest bicycle company in the United States, Trek manufactures nearly 50 percent of all the bikes sold in the USA. They make all styles of bikes, including mountain bikes, road bikes, professional-grade bikes, and bikes for kids. Understanding the scale of its operations, you may wonder where they make Trek bikes and if they produce them in the United States.

Where Are Trek Bikes Made Guide

In the rest of this guide, we’ll explain exactly where Trek bikes are made and other interesting information about the company.

Trek bikes are made in China, Taiwan, Cambodia, and other countries. Trek Bikes are no longer fully produced in the USA; however, they do assemble some of their bikes in the United States.

Which Trek Bikes Are Made in the USA?

Trek Bikes Made in the USA

Despite having an awesome American legacy, less than 1 percent of all Trek Bikes today comes from the United States. In 2014, they made somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 bikes in the US , but in 2013, they made around 50,000. We have continued to see a steady decline in the number of bikes that they make in the United States. Let’s have a look at the bikes made in the US:

  • Madone 6 series
  • Trek Madone 5.2
  • Trek Emonda SLR 8
  • Project ONE

Even these bikes, we would exercise caution in thinking that they fully make them in the United States because we get the feeling that they only assemble them here. Every bike that they make in the US will come from its sole factory in Waterloo, and it will have a label on it that says, “Handbuilt in the USA.”

Unfortunately, due to the lack of manufacturing that this company now does in the US, you have reason to exercise caution. For example, they say that only the red and white bike frames for the Trek Madone 5.2 were made in the USA.

Made in Waterloo

At the manufacturing facility in Waterloo, Wisconsin, they continue to build Trek bikes, but we would advise caution about believing in this too much. Unfortunately, we believe it is quite little in comparison to the past.

Believe it or not, like many American-made companies, Trek started from humble beginnings in a big red barn. They chose an operation that sat in the middle between Madison and Milwaukee. One of the funny things about this company comes from how they will occasionally put the face of their employees on coffee mugs as they did with their road bike manager .

When you buy the more quality Trek bikes, that would show you where you get the American-made bikes from Trek. For example, look for custom-built bikes as well to receive the ones made in Waterloo.

Some of the things that they do at the factory in Waterloo include sanding, bonding, and painting bicycle frames. They also assemble the chains and tires on the bicycles. Many of their US-made bikes will consist of carbon fiber since these are more high-end materials.

All of the carbon fiber frames come from Hexcel, a company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, so as long as you buy a carbon fiber framed bike, you will have an American-made frame. Hexcel has provided its services to Trek for over 25 years.

Along with the original factory in Waterloo, Trek also has its headquarters in Waterloo, where they hire 1,000 employees. Anyone interested in the history of this brand may want to tour its headquarters in Waterloo. You can learn more about their visitor tours here , where you will learn about their history.

Here is a cool video showing just how passionate Trek is about their bikes.

Why Did Trek Bikes Stop Making in the US?

We saw the manufacturing numbers halve from 2013 to 2014. It dropped from 50,000 bikes per year down to 25,000. Today, only around 10,000 Trek bikes get produced in the United States. Once upon a time, all Treks came from the United States, but you can’t say that anymore.

Trek first began building its bikes in 1976, but over the years, as the bicycle industry has outsourced its manufacturing more and more, we saw Trek do the same.

The increased labor costs and lower profit margins meant that they sent the jobs overseas to stay competitive with other companies. We do like that this brand appears to have held out longer than most. The first bicycle brand to start manufacturing overseas was Schwinn in the 1980s, and we saw a gradual slide from there where all the other companies followed.

Gradual Decline in US Manufacturing

Instead of an instant halt to production at Trek, we have seen a slow and gradual decay of its US manufacturing. Trek continues to this slow decline, and we don’t know where it will end and if all bikes will eventually be made overseas.

In either 1994 or 1995, we started to see them making most of their welded frames, such as the aluminum frames in Taiwan. The only exception to this was their tandem bikes. We believe that the real transition started in 2007 to 2008 because this was when their bikes stopped showing the “Made in X” stickers. Still, we think they held out longer than some of the other biking companies.

Be Careful About “Made in the USA” with Bikes

Don’t be taken in at the first sight of “Made in the USA.” Now, we’re not necessarily talking about Trek Bikes but the biking industry in general. Many times, they made put “Made in the USA,” but if you look closer, you will see the fine print that says, “Frame designed in the USA.”

Another trick that companies will sometimes use is to import the frame unpainted, and once they have painted them, they can claim that they were made there. Every country will have different laws on what is and is not acceptable for things like this.

One of the recent tricks that they use is to say, “Manufactured in America,” which means the same thing as “Assembled in the USA with Domestic and Foreign Parts.” You want to stay hip to the games that companies will play if you want a true American-made product, rather than some company padding its pockets of well-intentioned patriots—it’s more unacceptable than stating the true origin upfront, in our opinion.

Made in the USA – Getting the Custom Bike Experience

Custom-made Trek bikes offer a one-of-a-kind bicycle that differs from all the rest. You have two options, but both of them involve American made bikes. First, you can head to the headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin, to meet the individuals who brought your bike idea to life. Before that, you order it from your local Trek retailer.

Upon buying a custom bike in this way, you receive the VIP tour of the Trek headquarters and have a look at the design and manufacturing of your bicycle. You take a group lunch ride with the employees, which has become a personalized and favored experience unlike anything the competition offers. The Trek Race Shop will also provide you with tips on how to race better.

For the second custom-made option, you order the bike from the factory by visiting it onsite to discuss how you would like it built. After you order it, they will ship it to your retailer for pickup. You receive a personal design and spec consultation with this choice and a factory tour. In many ways, they’re kind of the same, but the second option offers you one-on-one support when ordering. Whatever option you choose, they will handle assembling the bike, but they don’t do this with a mass assembly line.

Here is a cool video showing custom Trek bikes being made:

Touring the Factory in Waterloo

You don’t necessarily need to buy a custom-built bike to tour the factory in Waterloo. You can schedule a tour on Wednesdays if interested in better understanding what they do at the facility there. For example, you will learn how they don’t manufacture the frame at that location, but you see the painting booths, the wheel manufacturing, and the design area.

The tour doesn’t cost anything, and the guides are incredibly knowledgeable about the facility and willing to answer questions. You will see every phase of the bike manufacturing process that they control in Waterloo. It’s also a fascinating way to learn the history of Trek and how it began. We wouldn’t recommend taking this tour in groups larger than 12 since it can be difficult to move around.

Made in Taiwan

In the last couple of decades, Taichung, Taiwan, has exploded into the bicycle manufacturing scene. The whole of Taiwan has become a major producer of bikes, including Trek Bikes, usually through Giant, a biking company that produces parts for most bicycle brands. Giant has the world’s largest bike manufacturing facility in Taichung.

Trek does its manufacturing in Taichung. Many would award this city with the title, “Bike manufacturing capital of the world.”

Let’s have a look at what Trek Bikes does in Taichung. At this factory, under the label Giant, they produce one million bikes, and in total, they produce 6.3 million every year at all nine of their factories. This shows you the deplorable state of US manufacturing, where they only now produce an estimated 10,000 bikes per year.

We would say that Taiwan and China produce lower-tier to mid-tier bikes. Giant produces more of their low-level bikes in China. We did hear that Giant shuttered a factory in China in 2019 due to the 25 percent tariffs on Chinese goods. The production rate in Taiwan doubled as soon as this happened.

Giant went on to blame former President Donald Trump—as if everyone should be outraged about a Chinese factory closing—since it was no longer profitable to produce the bikes in China. While there are plenty of legitimate reasons that someone could pick a bone with any US president, the only people upset about a Chinese factory closing down are the ones profiting off it.

Since the late 1980s, Giant has produced bikes for Trek as it has for many other biking companies, and today, they build many of the Trek bikes. Follow where Giant produces its bikes, and you will often find that they make Trek bikes there. Despite some of the negative connotations about foreign manufacturing, we wouldn’t necessarily say that bikes made in Taiwan would be the worst thing ever. You have many specialists here that understand how to build a quality bicycle. While it may not be American-made, it does have its advantages.

Made in China: Trek Bikes

All of the big bicycle brands have a manufacturing presence in either China or Taiwan—Trek manufactures in both. The lower-end Treks will often come from China since it costs less to produce them here, and they use lower-quality materials. Some of the locations where we believe that they manufacture Trek in China include:

  • Jiangsu, China
  • Guangdong, China
  • Heibei, China
  • Zheijiang, China

Most of the Trek bikes come from Taiwan, not China, but you still have some that come from this country. In the past, they produced more in China, but because of US tariffs, they now produce bikes in Taiwan. They have six factories in China where they produce bikes .

Trek Bikes does have a manufacturing presence in China, but they don’t make all of their bikes there.

Most of the Components are Made in China or Taiwan

Trek commonly produce the components for their bikes in countries like China or Taiwan. Even if you have a bike that says, “Made in the USA,” we would advise caution on thinking of it as fully American-made since that rarely happens with this brand anymore. The only exception to this would be their carbon frame bicycles, but many of the components will come from China and Taiwan.

Trek Bikes Go to Cambodia

In 2018, Trek Bikes announced plans to move the production of 200,000 of its bicycles from China over to Cambodia. We believe this decision came at the heels of the US tariffs against China. Many of the bikes with aluminum frames now come from Cambodia. They make them at the A&J Factory, which first opened in 2006. This is, in fact, a Taiwanese-owned factory.

Along with Trek Bikes, they make Kona, Norco, and Kent there as well. The choice to move production from China marked a deliberate action to take production from Giant in China and put it elsewhere due to the Trade War.

This is a 500,000-square-foot facility in Cambodia, and it sits near the nation’s capital of Phnom Penh. We found this an interesting choice because most bike manufacturing in the country happens closer to Vietnam in the north.

Behind Taiwan and China, Cambodia remains a popular manufacturing spot for bikes, but it struggles with the infrastructure. Because of that, many of the components must be imported to build them. That could be one of the reasons that we don’t see more manufacturing of bikes here.

Like with China, you can expect more entry-level and lower-priced Trek bikes to come from here. The one issue that has come up often with manufacturing in Cambodia comes from its poor treatment of factory workers.

Trek Bikes and Manufacturing in Germany

When we say that Trek makes its bikes in Germany, we mean their subsidiary Diamont Bicycles, a German brand of bikes. Trek first acquired the brand in 2002, and they make a stylish city bicycle. The brand has a history in Germany that goes back to the late 19th century. They manufacture in Hartsmanndorf, Germany, where they employ an estimated 250 workers.

Unfortunately, like with the US, we have seen Trek gradually lower the amount of production in Germany. They once employed 600 workers, but they now only employ 250 in the country.

The facility in Hartsmanndorf shows you the only directly owned factory under the Trek Bikes label. All of the other manufacturing comes from third-party factories like Giant. Diamont gives you an example of one of the oldest bike manufacturers in Germany. The factory does appear to have a decent output of 150,000 bikes.

Made in Hungary

Along with its manufacturing switch to Cambodia, Giant, Trek Bikes’s manufacturer, announced plans in 2018 to switch over to Gyongos, Hungary. This decision came during the US Trade War with China, and they lobbed high tariffs on goods. Giant has said that it will construct a $72 million facility with the aim of better serving the European market and reducing its dependence on Chinese manufacturing.

The choice to manufacture nearby will reduce the cost of taxes and transport. Building the new factory in Hungary will allow them to produce one million more bikes next to its market.

Are Trek Bikes Made in India?

While Trek does sell its bikes to the Indian market, they do not produce bicycles in the country. They have also said that they have no plans to produce in India. It first entered the market there in 2018, and they have said that they plan to sell to over 125 cities in India.

Favoring Countries with Cheap Labor

Unfortunately, we don’t see Trek Bikes bringing back manufacturing to the United States any time soon because it appears to favor the countries with cheap labor the most. For example, China, Taiwan, Cambodia, and Hungary pay lower wages than countries like the USA or Germany.

We were even surprised that they have kept as much manufacturing in Germany as they have because outsourcing to countries with cheaper labor appears to be the norm. We believe that even their manufacturing in Germany could change with Hungary 494 miles away.

For those who want American-made products, as Americans, we can only blame ourselves that the manufacturing has gone to places like this because of how we often go for the cheaper products despite them being made elsewhere. If we want American manufacturing to return, we must make it clear that we support American-made products rather than those made in other countries. Your money is a vote for American manufacturing.

Considering how Trek Bikes receives 60 percent of its business from the United States, we think that they should do a lot more manufacturing in the United States, but we can only fairly ask that of them by supporting the American-made bikes that they produce.

What Trek Does Do in the US

While they don’t have a great record of manufacturing in the US, especially in the last decade, we wouldn’t write them off completely. The brand hires American workers for its engineering, testing, and design. We respect that the brand has at least kept that much in the United States over choosing to send it elsewhere.

Don’t See a Barn, See Something Bigger

Trek has a saying at their factory in Waterloo that we find inspiring. The American heritage of this company has separated it from the other choices because it all started in something so humble as a big red barn and grew from there. Over time, the company expanded to become a billion-dollar business that has a presence around the world. Trek has since outgrown the barn that it started in, but the founding principles of “Don’t see a barn, see something bigger” have always guided the mission of the brand.

Conclusion:

That does it for this guide, if you have further questions about where Trek bikes are made or if you know any information we should add to this guide, let us know in the comments below. Like some of the other brands in the biking industry, Trek doesn’t do much production in the United States, but they do have a history in the United States. You can still buy bikes from Trek that were made in the United States, but we would advise heavy research in advance to make sure that you bought one made here. Beware as well of how a higher cost on the bikes doesn’t always mean that they made them in the United States.

Hi, my name is Kevin and I’m from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Choosing products made in America is important to me because it supports local economies, creates jobs, helps the environment, and ensures ethical labor practices. I also find that American made products are usually of higher quality so although they’re a little more expensive, you save money in the long run. Before starting this website I was in the USMC infantry and nowadays I work on this website as a hobby.

I’ve been looking for an American made bike but can’t seem to find any that meet my needs. What would you recommend for someone who is an intermediate mountain biker?

Hey Matt, there are a lot of good alternatives to Trek. We have a full article on bikes and there are plenty of mountain bikes on that list that would be suitable for an intermediate lever rider. After checking it out if you have any questions just let me know.

Riding a Bike in Cambodia: Everything You Need to Know

Arise Cambodia

Photo by Humphrey Muleba on Unsplash

Riding a bike it’s one of the best ways to explore this beautiful country. But before you hop on two wheels and pedal off into the sunset, there are a few things you should know. Cambodia’s roads can be chaotic, the traffic wild, and the climate hot, so you’ll want to prepare properly for your cycling adventure. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know before saddling up, from choosing a bike and dressing for the heat to navigating road conditions and staying safe. By the end, you’ll be ready to ride like the locals, soaking in the sights and sounds of Cambodia along quiet back roads and bustling city streets. The open road awaits!

Is Riding a Bike Safe in Cambodia?

Is riding a bike in Cambodia safe? The short answer is, it depends. Cambodia’s roads can be chaotic, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid cycling altogether. With some precautions, you can have a fun and safe ride.

First, stick to less busy roads when possible, especially when you’re just getting used to the flow of traffic. Head out early in the morning or in the evening when the roads are emptier. Country roads and dirt tracks away from the main highways are good options too.

Always wear a helmet, it could save your life in a crash. Reflective and brightly colored clothes will make you more visible to vehicles and other bikes. Use hand signals, make eye contact with drivers, and be very cautious when changing lanes or turning.

Bike rentals are cheap and plentiful, but inspect the bike first and test the brakes. Consider a mountain bike for rugged roads. Bring spare tubes, a pump, and basic tools in case of flats or other issues.

The biggest dangers are busses, trucks, and taxis. Give them a wide berth, as drivers often don’t check their mirrors or blind spots. Watch out for vehicles pulling over suddenly or doors opening into traffic. And never assume you have the right of way, even if you do!

With vigilance and defensive riding, cycling in Cambodia can be a thrilling way to experience the country. Take in the sights at your own pace, chat with friendly locals, and discover places you’d never see on a tour bus. Happy riding!

Top Tips for Navigating Cambodian Roads

Once you’ve rented a bike and gotten out on the road, here are some tips to keep you cruising confidently:

Follow the flow of traffic

Cambodian roads can seem chaotic, but there is a flow. Go with it, not against it. Ride on the right, pass on the left.

Watch out for obstacles

Potholes, stray dogs, and oblivious pedestrians are common, so ride defensively. Sudden stops or swerves can surprise drivers and other cyclists, so scan the road ahead and signal before changing direction.

Make yourself seen and heard

Ring your bell when passing or if traffic is merging into your path. Ride with a white front light and red rear light at night to increase your visibility. Reflective tape or gear is also helpful.

Share the road respectfully

Whether it’s a family of five on a moto, an ox cart, or a massive tour bus, share the road generously. Don’t cut people off or make aggressive maneuvers. A smile, wave, and polite “Sua s’dei” (Excuse me) go a long way.

Ask if unsure

If confused by signs or unsure of the best route, don’t hesitate to pull over and ask a local for help. Many Cambodians speak English and will happily provide directions or point you the right way.

With caution, courtesy, and common sense, you’ll soon feel comfortable cycling through Cambodia’s vibrant streets. Take in the sights and sounds, chat with friendly strangers, and enjoy the thrill of the open road! What an amazing way to experience this culture . Happy riding!

Choosing the Right Bike for Cambodia

When choosing a bike for riding in Cambodia, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Type of Bike

For casual riding around town or short trips into the countryside, a beach cruiser or mountain bike will work great. These provide an upright riding position and wider tires to handle rough roads. Road bikes with narrow tires are not ideal for most areas in Cambodia due to poor road conditions.

Quality and Comfort

Don’t expect high quality or comfort unless you bring your own bike or pay top dollar. Rental bikes and cheaper bikes sold locally typically won’t have the best components or be the most comfortable. Still, for short rides they’ll get the job done. Look for a bike with front suspension, padded seat, and working brakes at a minimum.

Used or New

You can often find used bikes for sale from guesthouses, rental shops or markets. These may be cheaper but quality and condition can vary. If buying used, thoroughly inspect the bike and take it for a test ride. New bikes from Giant, Trek or smaller brands can be found at some shops in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Expect to pay $200 to $500 or more for a new mountain bike.

Rent or Buy

If you’re only in Cambodia short-term, renting a bike is probably your best option. Daily rentals typically start around $3 to $5. Weekly rentals may be $15 to $30. Be prepared to leave a deposit, usually a passport. If staying long-term, buying a bike, even a used one, will likely save money and give you more flexibility. You can often resell the bike when you leave.

With the right set of wheels and a sense of adventure, you’ll be ready to hit the roads and trails to explore all the beauty Cambodia has to offer. Have a great trip and ride safe!

Where to Rent Bikes in Popular Destinations

If you want to explore Cambodia by bike, you’ll need to rent one! Luckily, bike rentals are inexpensive and widely available. In most towns and cities, you can find bike rentals on nearly every corner. Some popular spots include:

Siem Reap – Being the gateway to Angkor Wat, Siem Reap has no shortage of bike rentals. You’ll find them all over town, especially near Pub Street and the Old Market area. Rentals start around $2-3 USD per day for a basic bike. Some hotels and hostels also offer complimentary bike use for guests.

Phnom Penh – Cambodia’s busy capital has many bike rental shops, particularly around the riverfront area. Prices are similar to Siem Reap, around $2-10 USD per day. Stick to riding around the riverfront, as the traffic elsewhere in the city can be quite chaotic for cycling.

Kampot – The laid-back riverside town of Kampot is a perfect place to explore by bike. You’ll spot multiple bike rentals along the river road and across from the Old Market. Prices may be slightly higher here, around $3-7 USD per day due to Kampot’s popularity. The countryside around Kampot, with scenic roads through rice paddies and pepper farms, is ideal for cycling.

Kratie – Kratie’s main street adjacent to the Mekong River is home to several bike rentals, with prices starting around $2 t0 5 USD per day. Kratie’s sleepy atmosphere and proximity to dolphin-spotting sites make it a great town for casual cycling. Ride out to the village of Kampi to spot the rare Irrawaddy dolphins that live in this stretch of the Mekong.

No matter where you rent, be sure to check that the bikes are in good working order before riding off. Have a great trip cycling through Cambodia! Let the adventures begin.

Riding a Bike in Cambodia FAQ

Riding a bike in Cambodia is a fun way to explore, but there are a few things you should know before hopping on two wheels.

Traffic & Road Conditions

Cambodian roads can be chaotic, so take it slow until you get used to the flow of traffic. Expect lots of motorbikes, tuk tuks, cars, and even the occasional elephant! Potholes and uneven pavement are common, so watch out for obstacles. The only traffic laws seem to be “might makes right”, so be very careful.

Bike Rentals

You can rent bikes for $1 to $3 USD per day in most tourist destinations. Some guesthouses offer rentals, or look for shops with bikes out front. Make sure the bike is in good working order before riding off.

Wear a helmet, it could save your life. Also wear bright, reflective clothing, especially at night. Watch out for vehicles pulling out or changing lanes without warning. Go with the flow of traffic and be extremely cautious. Locals may honk as they pass you—don’t be alarmed, it’s just to let you know they’re there.

Theft Prevention

Bike theft is common, so lock your bike whenever leaving it unattended. Bring your own sturdy lock, as some rentals may not provide one. Lock the frame and both wheels to a stationary object like a bike rack. Don’t leave valuables in the bike basket where they can be easily snatched.

Where to Ride

Head to riverside areas, beaches or countryside roads. In cities, stick to designated bike lanes when possible. Ask locals or do some research on bike-friendly routes. Certain major highways prohibit bikes, so check before riding out of town.

Riding a bike in Cambodia can be a thrilling way to get around if you exercise caution. Follow these tips, ride defensively, and enjoy the adventure! Let the stunning scenery and culture surround you as you pedal through this captivating country.

So there you have it, everything you need to know to get out and ride a bike in Cambodia. Don’t be intimidated, just get on two wheels and go explore. Let’s dive in!

  • Follow manufacturer’s guidelines for battery care
  • Check weight capacity and power specifications
  • Consider off-road or mountain biking suitability
  • Prioritize safety features

What is the range of the electric bike?

When buying an electric bike, one of the most important factors to consider is its range, which refers to the distance it can travel on a single charge. The range of an electric bike is determined by its battery life and the availability of charging infrastructure.

Battery life varies depending on the model and capacity of the battery, with some bikes offering a range of 20 miles while others can go up to 100 miles on a full charge. It’s crucial to assess your needs and choose a bike with a range that suits your daily commute or desired riding distance.

With the increasing popularity of electric bikes, charging infrastructure is becoming more accessible, making it convenient to recharge your bike’s battery. So, how long does it take to fully charge the battery? Let’s find out in the next section.

How long does it take to fully charge the battery?

To fully charge the battery, it usually takes a certain amount of time. The charging time of an electric bike can vary depending on the model and battery capacity. On average, it takes around 4-6 hours to fully charge the battery. However, some electric bikes come with fast-charging capabilities, allowing you to charge the battery in as little as 2-3 hours.

When it comes to battery life, it is important to consider the range of the electric bike as well. A larger battery capacity typically means a longer range, but it may also require more time to charge.

So, when buying an electric bike, it is essential to inquire about the charging time and battery life. This information will help you determine how long it will take to charge the battery and how far you can travel on a full charge.

Now, let’s move on to the next question: What is the weight and size of the electric bike?

What is the weight and size of the electric bike?

The weight and size of an electric bike vary depending on the model and specifications. Electric bike weight can range from around 40 pounds for lightweight models to over 70 pounds for more heavy-duty options. It’s important to consider the weight of the bike, as it can affect maneuverability and ease of transportation.

Additionally, the size of the electric bike can vary in terms of frame size and wheel diameter. Some electric bikes are designed with compact frames and smaller wheels for easy storage and maneuverability in tight spaces, while others have larger frames and wheels for a more comfortable ride.

When considering the weight and size of an electric bike, it’s essential to choose a model that suits your needs and preferences.

Moving on to the next important question, does the bike have different modes of assistance?

Does the bike have different modes of assistance?

One important feature to consider when buying an electric bike is whether it offers various modes of assistance. Modes of assistance refer to the different levels of power assistance provided by the bike’s motor. Having multiple modes allows you to adjust the level of assistance according to your needs and riding conditions.

For example, you may want a higher level of assistance when climbing a steep hill, but a lower level when riding on flat terrain. This flexibility can greatly enhance your riding experience and make the bike more versatile.

Additionally, it is important to consider the battery range of the bike. A longer battery range means that you can travel farther distances without needing to recharge. This is especially useful if you plan on using the bike for long commutes or extended rides.

Now, let’s move on to discussing the maximum speed of the electric bike.

What is the maximum speed of the electric bike?

How fast can you go on the electric bike? One important factor to consider when buying an electric bike is its maximum speed. This determines how fast you can travel and is crucial for those who want to reach their destinations quickly. The maximum speed of an electric bike varies depending on the model and its specifications. Some electric bikes can reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour, while others may have lower maximum speeds. It’s important to check the maximum speed of the electric bike you’re interested in to ensure it meets your needs. Additionally, consider the battery range, which determines how far you can go before needing to recharge. Taking both the maximum speed and battery range into account will help you choose the right electric bike for your needs. Now, let’s explore if there are any additional features or accessories included.

Are there any additional features or accessories included?

Consider whether there are any extra features or accessories included with your electric bike. Many electric bikes come with additional features that can enhance your riding experience. Some common accessories include front and rear lights, fenders, a rear rack, and a bell. These accessories can be convenient and practical, allowing you to ride in various weather conditions, carry items, and stay visible on the road.

Additionally, some electric bikes may have additional features such as a built-in display for monitoring your speed, distance, and battery life, as well as different riding modes to suit your preferences. Having these extra features and accessories can add value to your electric bike and make it more versatile and enjoyable to ride.

Now, let’s move on to the next section and discuss what warranty and customer support are offered.

What is the warranty and customer support offered?

When considering the purchase of an electric bike, it’s important to think beyond the bike itself and consider the additional features and accessories that may be included. This could range from things like fenders, lights, racks, and even smartphone connectivity. Bicycle Manufacturing: A Success Story in Cambodia

Bicycle Manufacturing: A Success Story in Cambodia

  • Sao Phal Niseiy
  • July 5, 2020 1:30 PM

Unlike most sectors, bicycle manufacturing has continued and sales increased during the COVID-19 pandemic PHNOM PENH--As exports of bicycles manufactured in Cambodia surged in the first five months of 2020, a bike producer suggests that more needs to be done to ensure the country’s competitiveness.  According to a report from the General Department of Customs and Excises , Cambodia’s bicycle exports increased by 26 percent in the first five months of the year during which 876,612 units worth $197 million were shipped overseas. These bicycles were exported mainly to the European Union (EU) where 495,341 units were sent to 28 countries, making Cambodia the biggest bicycle supplier in those countries. Moreover, 223,912 bicycles were shipped to the United States (US), 125,602 to the United Kingdom and 338 to Japan.  One of the bicycle manufacturers in the country believes this upsurge in exports may signal a healthy expansion of the bicycle international market for the country. “While the exports to the EU are healthy and even increased a little, there has been a big growth in exports to the US particularly,” said Jon Edwards, CEO of A&J Worldwide, a major bicycle producer in Cambodia, said in an email interview.  Exports have steadily increased, going from $331 million in 2018 to $418 million last year. Countries Easing Lockdown and the US-China Trade War May Be Driving the Export Upsurge Looking at what may be driving the surge in Cambodia’s bicycle exports to foreign markets amid the pandemic, Edwards mentioned two possible reasons.  “The ease of ‘lockdown’ worldwide has released a ‘pent-up demand’ for bicycles,” he said. “[This] is driven by desire for exercise and once again enjoying the freedom of being outside. Also, the need for healthy and safe local travel, and avoiding public transport.”  In addition to reopening as the pandemic slowed down in their cities, many countries have been investing in cycling infrastructure, Edwards said. In the United Kingdom for example, the government is, he said “closing roads to motor cars and also installing cycling lanes to encourage cycling.”  The “green movement” aimed at protecting the environment is playing a role in encouraging people to use bicycles, which is one of environmentally friendly ways of traveling, Edwards said.  One other factor contributing to the expansion of Cambodia’s bicycle imports is the trade war between the United States and China, which has had its share in galvanizing the many investors to seek production bases outside China, he said. “Many manufacturers are encouraged to spread out to other manufacturing bases, and [have] motivated many leading brands to adopt a China+1 sourcing strategy,” Edwards said. “This has been a great opportunity for Cambodia as the government welcomes new investments and makes establishment of new factories relatively simple.”

Cambodia’s Bicycle Production Needs to Be Competitive As the European Commission ruled a suspension of part of the trade preferential Everything but Arms (EBA) trade scheme granted to Cambodia due to what the EU considers the country’s democratic backsliding and numerous violations of human and labor rights, some garment and footwear exports will now face tariffs along with all travel goods and sugar worth $1.09 billion. Unless the commission modifies or changes its ruling, the decision will come into effect next month. However, made-in-Cambodia bicycle products are not affected at this point.  And until now, bicycle manufacturing in the country has gained good advantage as, Edwards said, “a low-cost manufacturing base coupled with favorable export programs, such as GSP [Generalized System of Preferences] in the US and Canada, and EBA in the EU.” According to the ministry of Commerce , under the EBA scheme, Cambodia’s bicycle producers enjoy a 14 percent tax relief on exports to the EU. When asked how he sees the future of Cambodia’s bicycle manufacturing, Edwards responded that the bicycle business will remain healthy. “[T]hings like infrastructure spending to encourage cycling are not short term. “Also, the green movement is going to grow in the future,” he said. “So, while the rush to take up cycling this year will temper slightly, the part of ‘cycling in everyday life’ for more and more people will remain stronger than before COVID-19.” Still, regardless of whether the EU trade privileges are withheld or withdrawn, Edwards suggested that the country, just like other least developed countries (LDC), needs to work hard to ensure its competitiveness and work with the major markets to retain its interests gained through these exports. “As Free Trade Agreements (FTA) all around Cambodia are being progressed (the latest being the EU-Vietnam), there is a natural erosion of that advantage, which doesn’t seem to be accounted for in the economic assessment of these various trade agreements,” he said. Thus, the Cambodian government as well as the governments of other Least Developed Countries must engage with the EU and the US to look for ways to protect the advantage for all, Edwards said. This, he said, will allow them to persistently attract foreign and domestic direct investments and continue to trade their way out of poverty.

woman riding a red road bike made by the trek bikes brand

T rek Bikes is one of the most popular and the most respected USA-based bike brands right now, and for a good reason. They offer models in all categories and all price points, for all types of cyclists. Let’s learn more in our in-depth overview!

No matter if you are an absolute beginner who can’t even ride, or you’re a pro cyclist with years of experience in the legs, Trek Bikes has a bike for you.

With more than 40 unique models, it’s both very easy and very challenging to find exactly what you’re looking for. Our in-depth overview teaches you all you need to know about each model series and many other things related to Trek.

Technologies

Trek’s range of models, trek mountain bikes, trek bikes – road, trek hybrid & city bikes, trek gravel & cyclocross bikes, trek adventure & touring bikes, trek tt/triathlon bikes, trek electric bikes, electra bikes, trek women’s bikes, kids’ trek bikes, new or used trek bikes.

History

The first bikes Trek made were touring steel frames , but as the business evolved, so did the selection of models. Soon enough, Trek began producing road racing bikes, and then mountain bikes from both aluminum and carbon.

The first Trek-branded all-aluminum bike left the production lines in 1985 and the first full-carbon model came out in 1989.

Today, Trek offers high-profile road bikes such as Domane, Madone, and Emonda; hardtail and full-suspension models like Marlin , X-Caliber, or Slash; Checkpoint and Boone gravel and CX bikes; and dozens of other popular model names in a wide range of categories.

Over the years, Trek has pioneered or perfected many of the best technological solutions used in the top-level cycling sport.

Over the years, many of these advanced technologies have been passed down from best Trek bikes to mid-range and entry-level classes, improving the cycling experience for beginner and intermediate cyclists as well.

Technologies Trek use

Here are some of the most ground-breaking technologies developed by Trek so far:

  • OCLV Carbon:  Optimum Compaction Low Void carbon frames developed in 1991 — some of the lightest and stiffest in the world.
  • Alpha Aluminum: Trek’s refined aluminum frames that rival carbon frames in terms of strength and overall weight.
  • Active Braking Pivot: A revolutionary patented system developed to keep the rear suspension working while braking.
  • RE:aktiv: Advanced suspension system that provides dynamic flow that automatically adapts its performance to the rider and the type of the terrain.
  • Full Floater: Trek’s rear suspension system that allows for extremely supple and responsive rear suspension action, giving you the impression of bottomless travel.
  • IsoSpeed Suspension: Road bike suspension that decouples the seat tube from the top tube, diminishing the fatiguing impacts of the road.

One of the secrets to Trek Bikes’ long-lasting success is that they make bicycles for EVERYONE. No matter what kind of riding you wish to do or how much you can stretch your budget, you can find a suitable model in Trek’s lineup.

Their beginner bikes such as FX, 820, or Marlin start at around $400; whereas their elite road models such as Domane or Madone cost upward of $12,000.

Below is a full list of ALL Trek model lines available at the moment of writing this article, organized into logical categories.

new or used bike

That means that you can probably easily sell them when you decide to upgrade and get a decent part of your investment back. Of course, assuming the bike is still in good condition.

If you have the money to spare, we recommend going for a new Trek bike that you will be able to sell for a decent chunk of the original price in the future, if you decide to do so.

Whenever possible, new is always better. It’s true that you can buy a bike with better specs for the same amount of money if you look for used, but you should only do it if you have enough experience to determine whether the bike is in good shape.

Trek bikes sizing charts

One of the benefits of buying a Trek bicycle is that you can usually choose from a large number of sizes. Most Trek bikes are usually available in 6 to 7 sizes , but some series come in up to 8 sizes (Domane).

Trek also offers size-specific wheels on many of their MTB models, such as the Marlin series. That means that the smallest frame sizes come with 27.5″ wheels, whereas larger frame sizes are 29ers. This ensures the best possible fit for riders of all heights.

One big plus is that Trek also offers height and inseam-based bike size charts , which is something that many other brands avoid. Therefore, to find the right size, just compare your height and inseam to the chart provided for every single bike.

The Trek Powerfly 5 Review may be an extremely advanced electrical off-roader that comes with spectacular specs to deliver unmatched skillfulness.

It offers the sort of power you’ll have to be compelled to tackle difficult cross-country terrains, however still feels natural on a leisurely weekend cruise round the neighborhood!

I was interested in buying a used xcalibur 7 and it’s a woman’s model. I can’t find any differences in the mens and woman’s besides the seat and coil spring. Is the frame and everything else the same? Thanks

Hi Jack, Good question. Unlike other mountain bikes with the top tube curving down for women’s bikes, there is not much difference except the frame size and the things you mentioned perhaps?

What’s the difference sl series. I’m confused, can you please explain.

Hi Antonio, It’s just an acronym: AL: Aluminium. CF: Carbon Fibre. CF SL: Carbon Fibre Super Light. CF SLX: Carbon Fibre Super Light Extreme etc 😉

Reviews of cambodia bike tours.

Thank you Siem Reaper for an amazing adventure. Professional guides sharing special experiences and locations. Phearon was our main guide. He was great. So helpful and friendly, and introduced us to the real Cambodia. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was by far the best trip we’ve ever taken; the guides were fantastic, and you won’t go wrong having Mr. Ron show you around. We completed the 7-day cycling and had such a great time that we are looking forward to planning an Asian cycling adventure with Siem Reaper Travel again.
This was a excellent trip, with Pok as a knowledgeable guide. We got great insights into Cambodian and temple history and left with a deep appreciation of the area and Cambodia's turbulent past. We would perhaps have liked one more day to explore more of the countryside and perhaps visit farms, rice growing and a lotus farm and understand more about more local food. The bike riding was fun and not hard, and each day left plenty of time for exploring more of Siem Reap.

Phnom Penh – Sen Monorom – Kratie – Banlung – Virachey National Park – Banlung – Siem Reap

ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Overnight in a minority village and rustic homestay, enjoying a traditional BBQ
  • Cruise the Mekong River, with possible sightings of the critically endangered freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins
  • Experience a three-day jungle trek and camping overnight in Virachey National Park, incorporating a night hike to spot nocturnal wildlife
  • Take a cycling tour exploring some of Angkor’s iconic temples

Days 1-2: Phnom Penh – Sen Monorom | Visit a Minority Village and Overnight Homestay

Arrive at Phnom Penh, with the rest of the day at leisure to explore Cambodia’s fascinating capital city. The following day, we travel to the charming town of Sen Monorom, dubbed the “Switzerland of Cambodia” for its picturesque lakes, forests and rolling hills. Enjoy a late lunch at a highland coffee plantation. In the evening, visit a local minority village, with time to explore and play with the children before the village elders return from their day’s work in the fields. Together with your homestay hosts, prepare a traditional BBQ meal, accompanied by a few shots of home-brewed rice wine.

Day 3: Sen Monorom | Jungle Treks and Waterfall Lunch

Spend the day trekking through lush jungle, highlighted by spectacular views and rugged  mountainous terrain. We leisurely explore a waterfall and cave, before reaching Leng Oung Waterfall. Enjoy a refreshing swim while a traditional bamboo soup and BBQ is prepared for lunch beside the waterfall. Afterwards, trek through more dense jungle on the way to Leng Ken Waterfall. After a brief rest, we take a different route back to Pou Tang Village.

Days 4-5: Sen Monorom – Kratie – Banlung | Cruise to Spot Irrawaddy Dolphins

We travel to the small riverside town of Kratie, famous for sightings of the rare, freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins. The afternoon and evening are at leisure. The following day head off early to board a traditional fishing boat. Cruise to the Kampi Dolphin Pool, the largest dolphin pool on the Mekong River and natural habitat of the critically endangered, Irrawaddy dolphins. During the boat trip, we try and spot these elusive, freshwater dolphins. In the evening, meet your guide at the hotel for an informative briefing on the next three days of trekking in Virachey National Park.

Day 6: Banlung – Virachey National Park | Trekking and Camping Amid Wild Nature

Transfer to Kachon, where we board a narrow longboat to cruise along the Sesan River. Enjoy stunning panoramic views of jungle-clad mountains within Virachey National Park. Accompanied by a local ranger, commence trekking through a variety of landscapes, including patches of tropical forest interspersed with rice paddies and dense jungle. Cross the O’Plong River, either by wading (dry season), or bamboo raft or small boat (wet season). Hike-up to the highlands, rewarded with sweeping scenic views. During the trek, our guide will explain about wild forest foods, such as edible fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants and trees, as well as indigenous hunting techniques. Arrive at a forest campsite for an overnight stay.

Day 7: Virachey National Park | Jungle Treks and Night Hike for Nocturnal Wildlife

Rise early and commence trekking through dense jungle and vegetation. Literally off-the- beaten track, much of the wild jungle trail needs to be hacked through with a machete. We are rewarded with beautiful forest surrounds and panoramic views through the tree canopies. Enjoy lunch and a refreshing swim (depending on the season). Continue southwest back towards the Sesan River, arriving in the afternoon at a campsite set-up beside a small stream. In the evening, we participate in a guided night hike, with a marvelous opportunity to spot nocturnal animals, including the Pygmy Slow Loris, a minuscule primate and Civets, small jungle cats.

Day 8: Virachey National Park – Banlung | Morning Trek and Island Cruise

Enjoy the last leg of this amazing three-day trek, heading back east through the forest. In the afternoon, we arrive at the village of Leng Auw, where a small boat takes us over to the island of Koh Pong. While lunch is being prepared, have a swim or relax on the lovely sandy beach. Afterward, cruise to Kachon and drive back to Banlung, arriving late afternoon.

Days 9: Banlung – Koh Ker – Siem Reap | Immersed in Ancient Civilisations

Drive to Siem Reap, stopping for lunch en-route in Steung Treng. We later make a visit to  Koh Ker, a remote 10th century temple complex and former capital of the Khmer Empire,  engulfed in dense forests.  In the late afternoon, we arrive in Siem Reap, a charming provincial town and gateway to the Angkor Archaeological Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the stupendous remains of an ancient  Khmer civilisation, dating from the 9th to the 15th centuries.

Day 10: Siem Reap | Cycling Tour of Iconic Angkor Temples

Spend the day exploring some of Angkor’s most iconic and  astounding temples within the Angkor Archaeological Park, on a leisurely bicycle tour covering around 14km (9mi). Highlights include Ta Prohm, a 12th century Buddhist temple  distinguishable by overgrown fig tree roots bursting through its massive stone blocks – evoking a ‘forgotten city’ ambiance. We also cycle to Angkor Thom, an inner-walled city that served as the Khmer Empire’s ancient royal capital. Its spectacular centrepiece, Bayon, is known for its giant, enigmatic smiling faces carved into the stone towers.

View of Ta Prohm part of Angkor's grand temple complex at Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Day 11: Siem Reap | Angkor Wat Temple Sunrise and Departure

Awake pre-dawn to take-in an unforgettable sunrise over Angkor Wat, a 12 th century temple complex ranking as one of the world’s greatest ancient wonders and largest, religious monuments. This magnificent architectural masterpiece is the dominating central feature of the Angkor Park. Afterwards, transfer to Siem Reap International Airport for your onward flight.

NYC congestion pricing is coming. Here’s how to get out of it

Avatar for Micah Toll

New York City is on the brink of implementing congestion pricing, a bold move aimed at reducing traffic in Manhattan’s most congested areas. While this initiative promises to alleviate gridlock and generate funds for public transportation, it also means drivers will face additional costs to navigate through certain parts of the city. But what if I told you there’s a way to avoid these fees entirely?

Starting on June 30, 2024, vehicles entering the Congestion Relief Zone in Manhattan, which includes local streets and avenues below 60 Street, will be charged a new entry toll.

According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), the move is designed to help with NYC’s infamous congestion considerably. “The toll will result in 100,000 fewer vehicles entering the zone every day, relieving crowding in what is today the most congested district in the United States.”

Daily tolls to enter Manhattan will vary based on the vehicle and time of day, but most passenger cars will be charged $15 to enter during the day, and motorcycles will be charged $7.50.

But there’s an easy way to enter Manhattan and avoid paying the toll: just ride a bike. Or better yet, an electric bike. Using bike lanes across the bridges or taking a bike on the subway are both easy ways to get into Manhattan without paying congestion pricing, and still ensuring you’ve got your own wheels to navigate the city.

Bikes are a great way to get around NYC. According to the MTA, the average speed of cars in Manhattan is around 7 mph (12 km/h). But bicycle riders can easily surpass that speed and slice past traffic by using the bike lanes. To go even faster with less sweat, electric bikes make the ride even more efficient.

Why e-bikes are the perfect solution

There’s no getting around the congestion pricing if you’re in a car. Your options to avoid paying congestion pricing are either start driving an ambulance or get a bike. And these days, getting a bike quite often means getting an e-bike, since e-bike sales are through the roof. Pedal bikes are still an amazing option, but e-bikes make it easier to go longer distances without the same exhaustion, especially for riders who haven’t been on a bike in years. Electric bikes are not just a trend; they are a revolution in urban transportation. Here’s why they are the best way to bypass congestion pricing in NYC:

1. No congestion fees

This one is obvious. E-bikes, like traditional bicycles, are exempt from congestion pricing. This means you can zip through Manhattan’s busiest streets without worrying about paying extra fees. As the city gears up for congestion pricing, this exemption becomes a significant financial advantage for daily commuters.

2. Speed and efficiency

NYC traffic can be notoriously slow, with cars often moving at a crawl, if moving at all. E-bikes offer a swift and efficient alternative, especially with their ability to navigate through traffic with ease. Most e-bikes can reach speeds of up to 20 mph on throttle only (meaning no pedaling necessary), and others can reach 28 mph with pedaling, making them a viable option for quick commutes across the city.

3. Eco-friendly

Reducing your carbon footprint has never been more critical. We’re in a race against the clock here. If we’re to hope that we can still save our planet and maintain a habitable climate into the future, we’ve all got to play a part. E-bikes are one of the greenest modes of transportation, producing zero emissions during use. By opting for an e-bike, you contribute to a cleaner environment, supporting NYC’s goal of becoming a more sustainable city.

And yes, without going down the rabbit hole on this subject too deeply, you’re correct that there is a carbon price tag associated with manufacturing an e-bike. But the average amount of emissions offset by e-bikes is so much larger than the emissions generated from their production and use that it’s not even worth giving more than a paragraph to that flawed argument.

4. Health benefits

Riding an e-bike is not only good for the environment but also for your health. Even with the motor assist, you can still get a decent workout , which can improve cardiovascular health and reduce stress levels. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of wind in your hair as you cruise through the city.

5. Cost-effective

Top comment by steve v..

The article mentions a controversy on wearing helmets. While I don’t enjoy putting one on when I ride my Super 73, I can’t imagine what credible argument there could be to not wearing a helmet.

Beyond avoiding congestion fees, e-bikes are cost-effective in other ways. They require less maintenance than cars, and you won’t have to worry about parking fees or fuel costs. Over time, the savings can be substantial, making e-bikes a smart financial choice. Some riders have found that switching to an e-bike from a car has saved tens of thousands of dollars over the years.

Making the Switch

If you’re convinced that an e-bike is the way to go, here are a few tips to get you started:

Choosing the Right E-Bike

  • Consider your commute: Think about the distance and terrain of your daily commute. Different e-bikes offer various ranges and power levels, so choose one that fits your needs. That’s an issue my wife recently grappled with when she switched to e-bike commuting each day.
  • Test ride: Before making a purchase, test ride a few models to find one that feels comfortable and suits your riding style.
  • Check local regulations: Familiarize yourself with NYC’s e-bike regulations to ensure your new ride is compliant. For example, UL-compliant batteries are required to sell an e-bike in NYC.

Safety First

  • Wear a helmet: There is a hot debate about helmet usage, but especially for new riders in a city where pedestrian and cycling injuries and deaths are on the rise due to heavier cars and distracted drivers, a helmet is an important piece of safety gear. Safety should always come first. A good-quality helmet can protect you in case of accidents.
  • Follow traffic rules: E-bikes are subject to the same traffic laws as traditional bicycles, and these rules are even often the same as cars. Obeying traffic signals and signs is crucial for your safety and the safety of others.
  • Be visible: Equip your e-bike with lights and reflective gear , especially if you plan to ride at night.

Maintenance

  • Regular check-ups: Keep your e-bike in top condition with regular check-ups. Simple maintenance tasks, like keeping the tires inflated and the brakes checked, can ensure a smooth ride.
  • Professional servicing: For more complex issues, don’t hesitate to take your e-bike to a professional. Regular servicing can extend the lifespan of your e-bike and avoid small issues turning into larger issues. For folks that commute daily on their bikes, this is even more important. E-bikes require significantly less maintenance than cars, but it is still important to do routine checks.

As NYC prepares to roll out congestion pricing, now is the perfect time to rethink your daily commute. E-bikes offer a practical, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative to driving, allowing you to navigate the city with ease and avoid extra fees. Embrace the future of urban transportation and join the e-bike revolution today.

By making the switch, you’ll not only save money but also contribute to a healthier, more sustainable city. So, what are you waiting for? Hop on an e-bike and ride your way out of congestion pricing as you blow past all of those suckers on the bridges!
