9 Distance Learning Resources for Spanish Class

May 28, 2020 by Devon 6 Comments

Distance learning has thrown everyone for a loop, especially teachers. You’re not alone to be looking for quality and engaging distance learning resources for your Spanish class. Your students have faced so much uncertainty, and so have you! Let’s take some work off your plate and give you a list of my Spanish teacher tested distance learning resources.

distance-learning-resources

1. Record Remote Learning Lessons with Flipgrid

There’s no better way to still preserve interpersonal Spanish speaking and listening skills than with video. Flipgrid has you covered for this –it’s a free platform for educators where both students and teachers can securely record up to 5 minutes of videos. This is what I’ve been using all of distance learning and the students who participate love it and find it easy to use. Fair warning: you are not alone if you’re having trouble getting students to watch videos and post them. I recommend giving partial credit for watching and then full credit for posting responses.

2. Duolingo

I’ve been using Duolingo with students for five years now, and I highly recommend it. It feels like a game, easily keeps track of student scores (seriously, self-grading!) and they’ve made huge strides in incorporating SLA principles in their activities. Try Duolingo schools – you can assign specific topics and skills and it’s easy for students to join.  To make this a distance learning resource, I assigned weekly topics and allowed students to replace any other assignment with points on Duolingo if they were having tech issues or whatever else might pop up.

If you’re looking for a great way to review and prepare for the end of the year, or even something to assign over the summer, Duolingo is ideal. It comes in an easy to use app that vibes right with how students navigate the online space. From a communicative teacher perspective who values proficiency, I can’t say it’s perfect. But it’s the best dang thing you’re gonna get for free and I value what it can offer students with 0 teacher effort.

3. Free Professional Development for Teachers from ACTFL

This distance learning resource is for you, teach. You’re not going to believe all the distance learning resources that ACTFL – the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages – has opened up for us during this crazy school closure.

Hello, can you say…THEIR ENTIRE E-LIBRARY? Yes please. Time to finally check While We’re On The Topic off your reading list, Spanish teachers. Not to mention all the high-quality webinars and replays they have for us. They’re all focused on remote learning topics and my favorite ones so far have been “how to keep proficiency in distance learning” and “focusing on equity during remote learning”. Click here for a comprehensive list of free distance learning resources for Spanish teachers.

4. Distance Learning Assignment Planner

Are your assignments a hot mess like mine? My kids are doing assignments from two months ago and due three days from now, and emailing to ask what’s next…it’s a mess. Keep everything together with an editable typable version for you, and for your students! This is a lifesaver if you have multiple preps. I teach multiple languages, so I need to keep it all straight! Click here to get this free distance learning resource and organization tool.

5. Assign Authentic Spanish Songs

Now more than ever is the time to harness the power of music videos. These are so high-interest and will have kids drooling to learn the songs. I’ve got a curated playlist that I use -find it here and choose a song that works for your students and topic.

6. Free Voluntary Reading with Fluency Matters

Y’all, this website SAVED my life this semester. This is my favorite distance learning resource to share with fellow Spanish teachers for how hard-core they served our community during our time of need. I shared it from the rooftops on my instagram and insider email list – you can become a subscriber here to also find out about amazing resources like this – about how much I loved using the readers with my class. I had so little work on my plate while my students were using Fluency Matters readers , which gave me time to learn how to home school my four-year-old.

P.S. –  Have you ever wished the transition to proficiency were easier to do? Grab the FREE toolkit here to learn the framework for updating your practice to comprehensible input – without all the overwhelm – and prepare for the challenges ahead.

7.Youtube Channels for Teaching Spanish

My favorite youtube channel for learning Spanish is Basho & Friends – plenty of videos with content for all age groups. They have short and contemporary music videos for all types of vocabulary subjects that stick in your head.

Have you ever thought of having someone else do the talking and teaching? That’s the power of finding the right video. Ima give it to you straight- I’m an addict when it comes to finding things from youtube to use in class. There’s so much great content out there! From great songs to stories read slowly in Spanish, you’ve got so many great choices.

This is my favorite channel for Spanish book readings (great source of slow and clear input) that honestly even work in high school. They don’t care as much as they say they do, trust me. Try Froggy se Viste if you’re learning clothing, reflexives, or past tense.

8. Authentic Spanish Resources for Distance Learning

Here’s an example of how I’m using a highly engaging topic to make vocabulary meaningful.  My students are learning routines and reviewing school vocabulary, but this would be good for any Spanish 1-3 class right now.

How to Study in Quarantine Authentic Resource

9. Google Slides Activities for Google Classroom

One of the easiest way to make distance learning resources do the work for you is to have students work directly in Google Slides. You can use this whether your school uses google classroom or not – all you have to do is assign the slides, and students can watch videos, type directly into the slides, and work both independently and interactively with their work.

Here’s an example of something from Spanish class for distance learning:

I found the best new quarantine daily routines from Hispanic students around the world and asked my students to interpret and respond to what they saw. It allows for cultural comparisons and plenty of input. Here’s the daily routine specialized vocabulary lesson with 3 examples of quarantine student life around the world:

10. Virtual Field Trips for Spanish Class

Who’s ready for a bonus resource! Update as of 2021, I just recently discovered the power of virtual field trips to completely immerse students in a culture and teach empathy on a deeply impactful level – all virtually. Check out the full post on Virtual Field Trips for Spanish Class (with a full class on how to create your own and use them) here.

So tell me below..which distance learning resource for your Spanish class works the best for you? I can’t wait to see which one you choose. Before you go and try out these remote learning resources, you don’t wanna miss these other distance learning tips for teachers:

Hang in there, summer is coming. And the fact that you’re here shows me that you’re an incredible Spanish teacher who cares about their students. They might not say it, but they’re thinking it – (so I’ll say it for them). Your work matters so much to your students.

Keep at it, and I’ll see you in the trenches.

This is a fantastic post with great ideas! How do you use the music videos with your remote classes? I had lots of ways to use music in the classroom, but I am not sure how to use it when they are at home besides having them watch/listen.

October 25, 2020 at 19:12

I’ve moved my music video activities over to google slides activities so that they could interact with the material in a digital way. You can copy/paste lyrics onto a google slide and have students match them up or type in the lyrics while listening, visit the musician’s web page, etc. There’s a lot of options now that we’re digital

Thank you for all these ideas! I love your playlist but haven’t had time to go through each song/video. Are all the lyrics/videos on your playlist high school appropriate (private Christian school)? Thank you so much!

May 27, 2021 at 07:43

Hey Cari! As far as I know, they’re (pretty) appropriate. Think radio play. Although there are always slang words that are hard for me to catch and phrase differences between countries, but I played this in my own high school classroom every day. My golden rule, as flawed as it might be, is that if you didn’t catch it, your students definitely won’t.

Moscow city 360-degree virtual reality tour.

Take the virtual tour of the kremlin, moscow river, saint basil’s cathedral and red square.

The Moscow Kremlin  usually referred to as the Kremlin, is a fortified complex at the heart of Moscow, overlooking the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and the Alexander Garden to the west.

It is the best known of the Kremlins (Russian citadels) and includes five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. Also within this complex is the Grand Kremlin Palace. The complex serves as the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation.

The name “Kremlin” means “fortress inside a city”, and is often also used metonymically to refer to the government of the Russian Federation in a similar sense to how “White House” is used to refer to the Executive Office of the President of the United States. It had previously been used to refer to the government of the Soviet Union (1922–1991) and its highest members (such as general secretaries, premiers, presidents, ministers, and commissars). The term “Kremlinology” refers to the study of Soviet and Russian politics.

All of Moscow’s main streets start at  Red Square , so it’s easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum. In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil’s Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian designs, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colourful mural art.

Yuri Gagarin Is the First Man in Space. Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961

Taking a Trip!

Let’s talk about what class actually looks like the day of the virtual trip! I often get asked how long the trips take , so here’s an overview! 1. Do your start of class routine , take attendance, etc. 2. Give link to map & let students explore. This is a must the first time your students try these! 3. Field Trips for Your Music Class

virtual field trips for spanish class

Field trips offer a unique opportunity to enrich the learning experience. From being immersed in sensory activities to being able to see firsthand the places where music happens, a field trip is unforgettable for most kids.

Traditionally, field trips involve traveling to a destination, but this isn’t a requirement. Technological advances have made it possible to tour far-off places that a lack of time and money might otherwise make it impossible to visit.

Whether your music field trips are virtual or take place in the real world, your homeschoolers will find these experiences to be deeply enriching. They bring to life all of the things about which they have been learning in music education. This may mean unlocking even greater knowledge and imagination.

Here are just a few ideas for music field trips for your homeschoolers:

1. Attend a Symphony or Orchestra Performance

If you live close to a city where there is a symphony, orchestra, chamber music performance troupe or other groups, check into getting tickets for you and your kids. Finding matinee concerts on weekends is usually easy or you could choose to take in an evening performance to make the field trip even more momentous for your children.

Many cities also have youth philharmonics or orchestras. It can be especially fun and inspiring for kids to see others who are close to their own age excelling at playing an instrument. Don’t shy away from choral performances as well. Some kids are even more inspired by a beautiful voice and the way that it blends with musical accompaniment.

If you’re fortunate enough to live relatively close to an orchestra, then pay attention to their website. Many of these performance groups periodically present weekday performances for local school groups. They may be welcoming to your homeschooled students joining the group. What a fun opportunity to hear a live music performance with an audience that’s filled with kids!

Many of these programs also have fun and informative question and answer periods to make the field trip even more interesting.

2. Take a Virtual Tour

Is there a music-related destination that you and your students have always wanted to visit? Maybe it’s just too far away to be a realistic field trip, but the good news is that many famous sites now offer virtual tours. This can be a convenient and inexpensive way to get a backstage look at some of the most famous music venues in the world.

Here’s a sample of available virtual tours:

  • The Beede Gallery: A one-of-a-kind collection of musical instruments from the Pacific Islands, Africa, Asia and beyond makes this collection informative and unforgettable. It’s a wonderful way to introduce youngsters to how music is made in various countries and cultures;
  • New York’s Metropolitan Opera : This world-renowned opera company streams past performances for people around the world to enjoy. Watching even part of one of these performances is a wonderful opportunity to see powerful vocal and instrumental artists in one of the most famous venues on the planet;
  • The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow: Plenty of famous artists have enjoyed stellar careers playing in this venue. From the gilded balconies and seats from which the audience enjoys performances, the virtual tour takes viewers on a journey through the costume department and other backstage areas;
  • Carnegie Hall, New York City: Located in Manhattan, this prestigious venue has hosted everything from classical music to rock ‘n roll. Go on the virtual tour to explore the Hall’s three auditoriums, learn about its history and watch a fascinating 360-degree view of a performance by the renowned Philadelphia Orchestra;
  • Theatro Municipal, Sao Paulo: This opulent venue was built in 1903 in Brazil using materials that were imported from Europe. Get a 360-degree view of the audience, a tour of the backstage areas and see a performance of a Wagner opera by visiting the theater’s website; and
  • Burgtheater in Vienna: Europe’s second-oldest theater was originally built in 1741. Bombs and a subsequent fire all-but destroyed the venue during World War II, but it has since been restored to its former glory. As you take the virtual tour, pay particular attention to the intricately painted ceiling, which features some work by a young Gustav Klimt.

These and dozens of other virtual tours are free and easy to access online. If there’s a famous theater, venue or performance troupe to which you think it would be beneficial to introduce your students, visit their website to see what kind of resources they offer.

3. Visit a Factory that Makes Musical Instruments

This won’t be available to everyone, but if you can find a factory or musical instrument maker within a reasonable distance of your home, then it might be a good idea to ask about scheduling a tour.

Here’s just a small sampling of possible tours:

  • William S. Haynes Company, Inc. in Acton, Massachusetts, makers of flutes since 1888;
  • Tsunami Guitars in Cleveland, Tennessee, makers of solid-body electric guitars;
  • Wooden Cross Hardware in Decatur, Indiana, makers of snare drums and drum sets;
  • Cunningham Piano Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a piano restoration factory;
  • Fender Musical Instruments Corporation in Corona, California, featuring 8,000 square feet of exhibits and much more; and
  • Gibson Guitar Factory in Memphis, Tennessee, makers of world-famous guitars.

4. Tour a Local Theater or Other Music Venue

Did you know that many theaters and performance venues provide daytime tours of their auditoriums and backstage facilities? Each tour is a fascinating opportunity for kids and parents to discover how theaters work.

Many of these tours are offered for free or at an impressively reduced rate, especially if the tour is given in the name of education. Going on a tour provides a chance to see the venues in which musicals, concerts, stage plays and dance performances are given on a regular basis.

Frequently, the tour guide is extremely knowledgeable about the inner workings of the theater and the troupes that perform there. Feel free to ask lots of questions. To make the tour even more meaningful, try to attend a performance after the tour.

5. Go to a Musical Theater Performance

If you live relatively close to a metropolitan area, then you may have more opportunities than you realize to attend a musical theater show. Sometimes, these shows are a national touring company for a Broadway show. Other times, these performances are presented by local and regional troupes on a professional, semi-professional or amateur basis.

Any of these shows may be worthwhile. If you’re not sure if this is your kids’ cup of tea, then try a community theater performance where the tickets will be less expensive and the atmosphere may be more casual.

If this goes well, then it may be time to step up to a national touring company that offers plenty of big set changes, special effects and more. It’s an unforgettable experience for any kid!

6. Attend a Ballet or Modern Dance Program

Opportunities to see dance troupes abound in most metropolitan areas. From local to national professional companies, you may discover a wide range of dance styles to explore.

Don’t overlook the recitals of local children’s dance schools as well. Kids love to see performers who are in their age group. Moreover, these offerings tend to be less expensive and shorter in duration, which can be a major plus for children with shorter attention spans.

7. Go to a Recording Studio

You don’t necessarily have to live in Nashville, Los Angeles or New York to tour a recording studio. These facilities can be found in most good-sized cities, and kids may be fascinated to see all of the high-tech equipment that goes into making professional recordings. A highlight on some of these tours is being able to make your own music into the microphone so that you can hear it being played back.

8. Attend a Rehearsal for a Band or Choir

Children can learn a great deal by watching musicians and singers practice their art. Seeing the polished performance is one thing, but it is quite another to watch as artists struggle to get that performance to that point. It’s a wonderful lesson in discipline and the rewards of hard work. Try to attend the performance of the piece that was being rehearsed so that your kids can spot the differences.

9. Tour the Music Program at the Local College or University

If you live fairly close to a college or university that has a music program, then you may want to call someone at the department to see about scheduling a tour for your homeschoolers. Such a tour provides an excellent opportunity to see practice and performance venues, recording studios, libraries and other facilities that all may contribute to music education. For kids who are thinking about studying music in college, this can be a rewarding experience.

10. Take in a Music Festival

From classical music to bluegrass, music festivals are popular events across the country. Some are mega-festivals spread over more than a week with thousands of attendees, but others are quite intimate and feel almost exclusive. While some of these events focus on a single musical instrument or genre, others are quite diverse. A festival can be a relaxed way to introduce your children to new genres and live performances.

Instructors miss a golden opportunity when they neglect to follow up after a music field trip. For one thing, the kids’ minds are primed to learn more about the topic they’ve just spend an entire day seeing close up. Quality post-planning for every trip is the real key to extending and multiplying the learning experience. Here’s a roster of activities you can include in your trip follow up lessons:

Spend time asking each student what they enjoyed about the trip and ask the class to come up with suggestions for the next excursion.

Assign different class members to prepare reports about specific portions of the trip and assemble the final product into a class book to be distributed to students, parents and even trip hosts. Orchestra directors, for example, love receiving such reports from teachers. The document not only makes a nice thank-you gift but lets the hosts know how much a particular visit meant to the entire class. Try to have students work in small groups on the different sections of the report so that everyone has a chance to contribute.

Review any assignments that students completed while on the trip.

Have everyone compose thank-you notes to those who hosted field trip events, like symphony members, museum directors, sound studio managers, and more. This is more than just an exercise in social niceties. You’ll likely discover that many of the hosts reply with open invitations for future events, free concert tickets and other generous offers. Even more, the thank-you note writing teaches children a valuable lesson about networking, a skill they’ll need in their later careers.

If you’ve introduced music education into your homeschool and your kids love it, then maybe it’s time to encourage them to make their own music. At Music Prodigies, we develop accessible music curricula that are suitable for kids. It’s a fun, inventive and interactive way to learn about music, and even parents will find it enjoyable.

After the Trip: Following Up

Allow for at least an hour of classroom time on a day after the trip for pupils to share their experiences and mention anything they discovered that was surprising or unexpected. For example, someone might mention how long the symphony practice sessions are just prior to a big public performance. Kids are always amazed at how much time and dedication it takes to be a symphony orchestra member. In any case, make sure to give students time to bring up anything they want about their perspective of the outing.

These Arizona students went on a ‘field trip’ using virtual reality; here’s how it works

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The future is here. We’ve got self-driving cars and programs that can write everything from a cover letter to conversing with you.

Now, you can add virtual reality field trips to that list. Immersive experiences are now just commonplace. For many, though, it can be pricey and just a little out of reach. But Act One , a cultural experience nonprofit, wants to close the gaps in access to some of our state’s most underserved students.

The students in Mr. Abbotts’ photography class may be sitting in their North High School classroom, but they’re about to go on a trip.

“Please put your headsets on we’re going to calibrate them and have them all look the same direction and then we’re going to start the chapter,” said Act One Field Trip Manager Emanuel Class.

“They’re being transported to the Four Corners area right now,” said Aaron Abbott. He’s also a teacher ambassador for Act One. The Valley nonprofit strives to provide arts and cultural experiences for Arizona families, particularly those at or below the federal poverty level.

“We actually travel the entire state we have two vans, and we come to students anywhere, Title One schools for free and we bring the arts for them,” said Executive Director Beth Maloney.

This arts immersion experience is called “Weaving Our Story.” Local indigenous artists share their stories from their perspectives on hoop dancing, sheepherding, art and storytelling.

“I personally like it because I’m native so being able to see my culture represented in the classroom is just a very nice experience and I like it being shared with my fellow classmates and friends. It just makes me very happy,” said one student.

Act One says this was born out of the pandemic when schools and art institutions were shut down. Now the technology has grown, gotten better and this is here to stay.

“Oh it’s super cool and it’s not always possible to get them to art museums or artists they might be studying and this gives them that opportunity,” said Abbott.

It’s Act One’s second season of content. Their first season highlighted Mexican art and history. Over 18,000 students have participated in these VR field trips so far.
