How to Apply for a Visa

Please note that the information below changes regularly. For example, the UK leaving the EU may change the ability to travel visa-free to European countries. Therefore, you should always check the visa requirements of your country of destination before you travel.

This question comes up when you are considering travelling to one of the European or Schengen Countries or another country. Once you have obtained refugee status, you may wonder where you can travel without the need for a visa.

If you are a holder of a Refugee Travel Document issued by the United Kingdom under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees , you can travel visa-free to a lot of countries. Different countries have their own travel restrictions and require you to have a visa even for short term visits like tourism, even if you have a Refugee Travel Document.

When you are travelling, you will need to make sure that you carry your valid UK residence permit confirming your refugee status together with the Refugee Travel Document.

All the above countries issue refugee travel documents in one form or another. They allow you to leave the country that issued them and return with the same documents. Some countries allow you to travel to other countries without the need for a visa. Whereas, you may need to obtain a visa for other countries. These arrangements are usually due to agreements between countries.

Please note that in some instances, you may lose your refugee status if you travel to the country from which you sought refuge. You will need to check with the country that issued your travel documents.

Getting a Travel Visa

A travel visa is an official document, usually stamped or affixed into the bearer’s passport, that grants the right to legally enter, remain within, or leave a foreign country. A  Schengen visa , for example, allows you to travel to any of the  Schengen countries  as well as other  non-Schengen countries  that allow travellers to enter their countries with a Schengen visa.

Travellers without a valid travel visa will be refused entry into a country. And, if the individual enters the country through illegal means and is later discovered, may be punished and deported.

Each country has their own processes for applying for a visa. Generally, you will need to fill in an application form and submit any requirements that the consulate or embassy asks for, and some even require you to appear for an interview .

There are many factors that could add to your visa being approved or rejected by the consulate, and many find the process of applying for a visa stressful for this reason. You can choose to do this on your own, or get a service like IaM to help you either make the application or check the application that you filled out yourself.

Hi I am a Zimbabwean national who holds a UK refugee travel document and I just wanted to check if South Africa definitely does not require a visa as the last time a friend travelled there about ten years ago they did require one. At that time it did state that we needed one on their website but this is no longer stated so am guessing this has changed. Checked with the embassy but referred me to vfs global.

Under the 1951 UN Convention Refugee Travel Document (blue) is issued by the United Kingdom to a refugee who has been granted asylum in the UK. If someone has been recognised as a refugee then they can apply for a travel document under the 1951 refugee Convention, which is a blue passport-sized document. Information about applying for this travel document is available  on the UK government website .

The Refugee Travel Document Normally is normally issued for up to 10 years for adults and for up to 5 years for children, or in line with limited leave. It also may be issued with a shorter validity if considered appropriate.

Travel documents are normally valid for all countries other than the country asylum is claimed from and/or the country of origin.

Stateless person’s travel document

A stateless person may apply for a travel document under 1954 United Nations Convention relating to Stateless Persons. Information about applying for this travel document is available  on the UK government website . For more information on statelessness, see our  fact sheet on statelessness .

The travel document is normally valid for up to 5 years (children) or 10 years (adults) or in line with the leave granted. The stateless travel document is normally valid for all countries.

Certificate of Travel

Certificates of Travel may be issued to individuals who:

• are permanently resident in the United Kingdom, or
• have been granted Humanitarian Protection (HP) or Discretionary Leave (DL) to enter or remain in the UK for a limited period, following an unsuccessful asylum application  and  can provide documentary evidence that they have been formally and unreasonably refused a passport by their country of origin.

The certificate of travel is normally valid for up to 5 years or for the length of leave the individual has. The Home Office guidance states that the certificate of travel is normally valid for all countries but there were previously issues with the acceptance of the document in a number of countries, including many European ones. It is recommended that a particular country’s rules should be checked before applying for such a document and travelling to that country.

However, if an individual stay outside of the UK for a period of more than 2 years, that leave to remain (whether indefinite or limited) will lapse. The leave to remain will not lapse if someone comes back and left again during the two-year period – it must be continuous for the leave to lapse.

Travel outside of Canada for refugees

People in Canada as refugees can travel outside Canada, but until they become Canadian citizens, they need to be aware of several considerations. This applies to resettled refugees (whether privately sponsored or Government-Assisted) who mostly receive permanent residence status as soon as they arrive in Canada. It also applies to people who are determined to be refugees (Protected Persons) within Canada, either by the Immigration and Refugee Board, or through a Pre-Removal Risk Assessment.

It is important that a person who has come to Canada through a refugee resettlement program or has been recognized in Canada as a refugee no longer use a passport from their home country because it could cause their status to be revoked through cessation (see below).

Once refugees meet the necessary requirements, they can apply for Canadian citizenship and, once they are citizens, they can travel with a Canadian passport. However, in the meantime, whether they have permanent residence or not, they need to apply to the Government of Canada for a Refugee Travel Document in order to travel outside Canada.

A Refugee Travel Document can be used as a passport to travel to other countries (but not to the person's country of origin). However, it is not the same as having a Canadian passport. Some countries which allow Canadians to enter visa-free require a visa from a person travelling with a Refugee Travel Document. It is the person’s responsibility to contact the consulate or embassy of the country where they would like to travel to check any visa requirements.

The processing time for the travel document can vary so it is a good idea to wait to make firm travel plans (such as buying an airplane ticket) until the document has been received - and any necessary visas obtained.

Loss of refugee status (cessation)

Canada offers protection to refugees because they have shown that they are in danger in their home country. However, Canadian government has the right to remove someone’s refugee status if it believes that the person accepted the protection of their home country (known as “re-availment”) after obtaining refugee status in Canada.

This could happen if a person:

• Travels to their home country (even for a short visit)
• Travels using the passport of their home country
• Applies for a new passport from their home country

If a person has done one of the above-mentioned things, it may not automatically be a problem. It is up to the Canada Border Services Agency to decide which cases to pursue. If they pursue the case, and the person loses their refugee status, they may also automatically lose their permanent residence (if they have it).

Re-entry into Canada with a permanent resident card

For people who have permanent residence, a permanent resident card is required to return to Canada. See here for more information. 

Check to make sure that your permanent resident card will not expire while you are on your trip. It is possible to get a Permanent resident travel document while you are overseas, but it can be a hassle.

When flying to visa-free countries, you'll still have to show your passport as part of the identity check 👮‍🎫.

What is a visa?

A visa is a permit issued by a country that allows a person to enter the country, stating clearly the purpose of the visit and the duration of the stay.

Visas are closely associated with the request for permission to enter or exit a country, and the conditions pertaining to this vary depending on the country one chooses to visit.

How does it work?

Visas generally work through the simple rule of seeking permission from the country one wishes to visit.

For example, a non-EU tourist who wishes to visit Spain generally must first obtain a Spanish Tourist Schengen Visa .

Nationalities within the Schengen Area can freely travel between all member countries without a visa.

There are different types of visas, but the most common include the transit visa , which lasts for less than three days and is issued to people passing through a country to another destination.

The tourist visa is for people who wish to travel for leisure. There are also business visas issued to those who wish to engage in commerce in another country.

Fingerprinting

Several countries across the globe, including the United States of America, Singapore, and Japan, require adult passport holders to be fingerprinted on arrival.

Most countries take photos when visitors arrive, but it is becoming more common to also take fingerprints for all non-residents.

In Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, they have added iris scans as well.

Criminal history

Many nations in the world require visitors to be checked for any record of criminal history in their native country or any other country.

If the person is found to have any criminal history, they may be barred from entering the particular country of interest.

Vaccination

For countries like Chad, Uganda, and Benin, visitors are required to be vaccinated before traveling, and upon arrival, they are required to produce a current International Certificate of Vaccination as evidence.

In other countries, visitors are required to be vaccinated if they are coming from an infected area or nation.

Sufficient funds

Many nations, even if the passport holder has free access to that country, have to make sure that the visitor has enough funds to spend while in the country.

In addition to this, they may also require the visitor to show evidence of a ticket for exit.

Visa restrictions

Although holders of passports with visa-free access to certain countries can freely travel there, each country places certain restrictions to allow visitors into their country.

Make sure to check the entry requirements or call the country's embassy before buying flight tickets.

Schengen Visa Holder

If you hold a Schengen visa, it allows you to travel to certain countries without needing a separate visa.

This type of visa is a great option for those who frequently travel between different countries in Europe.

Some of the visa-free countries for Schengen visa holders include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Keep in mind that the length of your stay may be limited in some of these countries, and you may need to provide additional documentation upon arrival.

It's important to check the entry requirements for each country you plan to visit, as they may change frequently.

Visa-Free Countries for US Citizens in 2024

Once considered the best, most powerful travel document in the world, the US passport is beginning to lose its appeal. 

That’s evident from many sources, including our own Nomad Passport Index which, in 2024, ranks the US passport in a lowly 44th place, just above Uruguay but still behind Argentina. That’s a shocking statistic for a country so used to striding confidently across the world stage.

But that fall from grace has been coming for some time. In recent years, the US has become more focused on levying taxes, enforcing stringent regulations and promoting an unhealthy distaste for the wealthy.

No wonder more and more US citizens are looking for a Plan B that allows them to diversify their wealth and get a second passport to ensure they’re prepared for whatever may come.

Benefits of Owning a US Passport in 2024

According to the Nomad Passport Index , US passport holders can travel to 172 countries either visa free or without having to obtain a visa in advance (meaning these countries offer visa on arrival or electronically). 

In the modern fast-paced world of business, visa-free travel matters for US citizens. Whether you’re a digital nomad or someone looking for a more permanent place overseas to live and work, visa-free access offers many opportunities. It allows you to visit for a short period and assess if the lifestyle, climate, real estate market and job opportunities are worth relocating for.

In short, it gives you an idea of what’s on offer should you decide to apply for residence and incentives such as a digital nomad visa . US citizens can, for example, travel visa-free to Germany and apply for their Freelance Visa , which is valid for a  year and can be renewed.

So, despite the increasing government regulations and IRS tax enforcement, the US still ranks high in global terms for openness to business. That means that, for those determined to do business in the US, despite its complicated tax system and government policies, it can still be a land of opportunity.

Visa-Free Countries for US Citizens

As of 2024, US passport holders can travel visa-free or visa-on-arrival to 172 countries. As long as you do not stay longer than permitted, you can remain in those countries with just your passport. For example, in Colombia , a US passport holder can stay in the country for up to three months . 

This can be extended to six months with permission from the government but if you wish to remain in the country for more than six months, you’ll need to apply for a visa. 

Visa-Free Countries for US Passport Holders

As we discussed above, the US passport is still a fairly powerful travel document, despite the many setbacks the nation is facing. Below are some of the countries you can travel visa-free to with a US passport:

• Netherlands
• Antigua and Barbuda
• Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Saint Kitts and Nevis
• Saint Lucia
• Sao Tome and Principe
• South Korea (Visa requirements lifted until December 2024)
• South Africa
• Czech Republic
• North Macedonia
• Dominican Republic
• Switzerland
• El Salvador
• Marshall Islands
• Trinidad and Tobago
• Tonga (No visa for trips of 30 days or less)
• United Kingdom
• Vatican City
• United Arab Emirates (30 days or less).

Although these locations don’t have visa requirements for US citizens, you should still do your research before hopping on a plane and entering a foreign airport. For example, although you don’t need a visa for the Schengen Area with a US passport, from 2025 you may need to fulfil the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) requirements for entry. This is a planned electronic authorisation system of the European Union for visa-exempt visitors travelling to the Schengen area. 

If you’re planning a trip to the Schengen Area, an area encompassing 29 European countries, keep in mind that your stay in each counts towards a combined limit of 90 days. So, if you stay in Germany for 35 days and then travel to Poland, you can only stay in Poland for 55 days. 

Countries That Require Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

An eTA allows a country to screen visitors before they enter the country, increasing its security and transparency.

The US has an ESTA system for certain visa-exempt foreign nationals. Countries that require US citizens to have an eTA includes places like Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Although not used by every country, electronic travel authorisation is a far quicker process than completing a full visa application.. 

Visa-on-Arrival Countries for US Passport Holders

The Visa-on-Arrival (VOA) process is much more straightforward than the standard process of getting a visa. When travelling to VOA countries, you need to obtain a visa through immigration before entering the country.

In most cases, the applicants have to go through an online pre-approval process and approved travellers are then granted a visa through an accelerated process at the port of entry. For VOA applicants, the immigration process is faster and less stressful.

The following countries are some of those that require US passport holders to obtain a visa on arrival (VOA):

• Burkina Faso
• Saudi Arabia
• Sierra Leone
• Comoro Islands
• Solomon Islands
• South Sudan
• Guinea-Bissau

US citizens can enjoy visa-free travel to the countries above, but each may have its own rules about passport validity, duration of stay, and other such requirements.

US citizens can travel visa-free to all European Union countries and do not need a tourist visa for stays up to 90 days.

For longer stays, each country has its own immigration process and requirements. For example, some countries may require travellers to carry an International Certificate of Vaccination.

How Do US Citizens Visit Countries with Visa Requirements?

Americans can enjoy visa-free travel to the majority of the world’s countries without going through a standard visa-acquiring process.

However, a relatively small number require visiting US citizens to have a visa and go through the following process:

• Choose the purpose of a visit : This will define the type of visa that you will obtain and whether it’s a multiple-entry visa or not.
• Submit application : You will be required to submit a visa application with supporting documents at the embassy of the country you plan to visit.
• Have an interview : Make an appointment in the nearest embassy or consulate and appear for an interview.

Different countries have different procedures but all have these common steps.

Restricted Countries for US Citizens

A few nations restrict US citizens from entering.

For example, they cannot travel to North Korea without a special passport validation from the US Government. Contrary to popular belief, they are allowed to visit Cuba but, again, they will require special legal permission in advance to do so. 

Other countries like China and Russia do permit US citizens to visit, although they must complete the visa process before arrival. 

Is a US Passport Still Worth Having? 

We’ve discussed the countries US passport holders can travel to visa-free, but a passport is more than a travel document; it’s both a tangible and symbolic representation of one’s national identity.

In terms of the travel freedoms it offers, a US passport is strong, but what about the freedom, rights and opportunities available to its citizens?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the United States but at Nomad Capitalist we believe there are better options for high-net-worth individuals to reduce their taxes and protect and grow their assets. That could be in a tax-friendly country with a high quality of life and freedom or it could mean living in one country and having your business in another.

So, here are some reasons you should consider the alternatives if you are a US citizen. 

Complicated Tax System

The US has a citizenship-based taxation (CBT) system, meaning that the government will follow you to the ends of the earth and tax you wherever you live. The US is one of only two countries with a CBT system, the other being Eritrea.

There are some exclusions for US citizens overseas but in general you’ll likely liable for US taxes and at the very least you’ll be obliged to file a tax return and report all economic activity to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). That’s why it’s challenging for US citizens to pay lower taxes overseas unless they renounce US citizenship . 

Increasing Government Regulation

It is estimated that regulations cost US businesses roughly US$300 billion a year, with the costs increasing as firms grow from small to medium size. 

With the Biden administration introducing a minimum 15% corporate tax on larger enterprises to close previously legal tax loopholes, it seems the tax and regulatory environment in the US is currently being geared to punish rather than promote business. 

All it takes is one presidential signature and your business can face more costs and higher taxes. We used to think of the US as a business-friendly country, but recent events show that this may no longer be the case.

US Passport Shortcomings

A US passport may allow access to 172 countries but US citizens still must obtain a visa to travel to China, the world’s second-largest economy. The additional visa requirements may restrict entrepreneurs from benefiting from the Chinese market.

Suppose you are a businessperson interested in China? You should think about acquiring a second passport that offers visa-free access to China and allows you to work there without any restrictions.

That kind of passport exists. And China is just one of several examples – all of which means that, while a US passport has a lot of power, it may not meet your personal needs or goals. 

Visa-Free Countries for US Citizens in 2024: FAQs

A standard, adult US passport and passport card costs US$130 plus processing fees. The cost increases if the process needs to be expedited.

June 6, 2023, 11:30 a.m. —Winnipeg— Canada is a destination of choice for people looking to visit, do business or reunite with family and friends. That’s why we are committed to improving our immigration programs and services by making them more efficient and equitable for people around the world.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the addition of 13 countries to the electronic travel authorization (eTA) program. Travellers from these countries who have either held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or who currently hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa can now apply for an eTA instead of a visa when travelling to Canada by air. Effective today, eligible travellers from these countries can benefit from the program:

• Antigua and Barbuda
• Philippines
• St. Kitts and Nevis
• St. Vincent and the Grenadines
• Trinidad and Tobago

Introducing visa-free air travel will make it faster, easier, and more affordable for thousands of travellers to visit Canada for up to six months for either business or leisure. It will also help grow Canada’s economy by facilitating more travel, tourism and international business, and by strengthening Canada’s relationships with these countries while keeping Canadians safe.

This decision will also divert thousands of applications from Canada’s visa caseload, allowing us to process visa applications more efficiently, which will benefit all visa applicants.

Individuals who already have a valid visa can continue to use it to travel to Canada. Those who are not eligible for an eTA, or who are travelling to Canada by means other than air (for example, by car, bus, train and boat—including by cruise ship), will still need a visitor visa . Travellers can visit Canada.ca/eTA to find out whether they’re eligible for an eTA and how to apply for one.

Quick facts

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air.

The eTA application is used by Canadian officials to conduct light-touch, pre-travel screening of air travellers. It costs CAN$7 to apply, and most applications are automatically approved within minutes.

To apply for an eTA, travellers need only a valid passport, a credit card, an email address and access to the Internet.

Almost 20.9 million eTAs have been issued since the eTA program was introduced on August 1, 2015.

IRCC first expanded its eTA program in April 2017 to include eligible Brazilians, Bulgarians and Romanians. Canada lifted the visa requirement for all citizens of Bulgaria and Romania later that year. Today, eligible Brazilian nationals continue to enjoy visa-free air travel to Canada.

Within the next year, Canada expects to receive 200,000 (or 20%) more visitors from these 13 countries. Within a decade, increased travel from these countries is expected to bring almost $160 million in additional tourism revenue.

IRCC Adds 13 New Nations To List Of Visa-Free Countries

Today, Minister of IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) Sean Fraser announced addition of 13 new nations to the list of eligible countries for visa-free travel to Canada.

As per one of the expectations posted by INC – Immigration News Canada , IRCC adds 13 nations to the list of visa-free countries.

New countries eligible for visa-free travel to Canada: Panama, Caribbean island states of Antigua and Barbados, St. Kits and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Argentina, Morocco, Seychelles, Thailand, and Philippines.

Effective today, travellers from these countries who have held a Canadian visa within the past 10 years or who currently possess a valid United States non-immigrant visa can now apply for an eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) instead of a visa while coming to Canada.

The announcement was made at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport – Departure Terminal, 2000 Wellington Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3H 1C2.

Immigration minister was joined by Kevin Lamoureux, Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Rechie Valdez, MP for Mississauga—Streetsville, Ontario.

After media availability, IRCC Minister Sean Fraser will be attending a roundtable discussion with local stakeholders and community members at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM).

As per official press release, on the following day (June 7, 2023), Minister Fraser will also be welcoming 20 new Canadian citizens at a special ceremony hosted by VIA Rail.

With immigration minister’s schedule to have a roundtable with community members at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) indicates that there was an expectation that there could be some good news coming for filipinos community, but it was just based on the speculation.

What is electronic travel authorization or eTA for Canada?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada. An eTA is connected to a traveler’s passport electronically.

It is valid for up to five years or until the expiration of the passport, whichever comes first. If you obtain a new passport, you must obtain a new eTA.

How much is the cost of eTA for Canada?

$7 Canadian dollars is cost of an eTA per individual.

One of the frequent questions I get is which countries can I visit with a UK visa. The short answer is the UK. The long answer is you can travel to 40 countries and territories VISA-FREE with UK visa.

I encourage you all to get a US visa or at least a Canada visa first. Both these visas are long-term visas. These visas offer VISA-FREE travel to quite a few countries. But if you happen to have a UK visa or applying for one, then it is still better than not having any visas at all. There are about 40 countries and territories you can visit with a UK visa.

UK tourist visas are mostly short-term (C-Type) visas valid for 6 months. The UK does issue long-term visas for 5/10 years but it would cost an arm and a leg.

The UK visa application is not the most difficult, but it can be stressful due to its lengthy processing times and lack of customer service.

• Entry granted: 7 days
• UK visa must be a long-term visa issued for 3 or more years, visas issued for less than 3 years are not accepted
• After entering Kyrgyzstan this way, you can only reenter Kyrgyzstan again after 21 days

• Entry granted: 96 hours (4 days)

• Must be traveling to or from the country of passport. Example: Must be traveling to a third country from India via Singapore or traveling to India from a third country via Singapore. An example itinerary would be India-Singapore-Bali or Bali-Singapore-India.
• Both arriving and departing flights in Singapore must be on the same itinerary

When it comes to traveling internationally, Italian passport holders have a great advantage because They can visit a list of countries around the world requiring a visa. Besides the Italian passport visa free countries, Italian citizens can also travel to many countries with a visa on arrival or eVisa. This article will sum up the countries you can go to with and without an Italian passport as well as the visa requirements of the destination countries.

How strong is Italy passport?

The Italian passport is one of the most powerful passports in the world. As of June 2024, the Italian passport is ranking 2nd in the world, only next to the Singapore passport. It has 161 visa-free access to countries from the US to China. Since Italy is a member of the European Union, having an Italian passport gives you benefits for education, medical treatment and convenience in doing business in another EU country.

Visa free countries for Italian passport

As mentioned above, there are 161 visa free countries for Italy passport. Being a part of the EU, most of the Italy passport visa free countries are in Europe with a number of 47 countries. Apart from Europe, many are located in Central America and Asia. The rest of them are in the Pacific Ocean, Africa, South America, etc.

Although you can travel to these countries Italy passport visa free, it is essential to check the duration of stay and the permissible purpose for travel before you plan your trip. They can vary from country to country. For example, you can visit the UK for 180 days, whereas in São Tomé and Príncipe, you can only stay for 15 days.

Also, a valid passport is still necessary when you enter visa-free countries. Make sure it will be valid for 6 months after your departure date.

Where can Italian citizens travel without a passport?

Among the visa-free countries, 44 countries allow Italian citizens to travel without a passport. You can travel to these countries with only an ID. They are mainly European countries, including all the Schengen countries such as Germany and Denmark. The rest are countries in Central America, Africa, Oceania and others.

Visa on arrival countries for Italian citizens

Visa-on-arrival countries are the countries that allow Italian citizens not to apply for a visa until they arrive at the border. In total, there are 28 visa-on-arrival countries. Half of them are mostly in Asia such as Indonesia, and the other half are in Africa such as Tanzania.

After you arrive at the airport of these countries, you need to submit your application for a visa on arrival by doing some paperwork and presenting the relevant documents as required. You will receive a VOA (visa on arrival) after the process is complete.

eVisa countries for Italy passport holders

An Italian passport holder can apply for an eVisa to travel to 20 countries. They are mostly African countries such as Nigeria and South Sudan. The rest of them are in Asia, Oceania, etc.

Getting an eVisa is simpler than getting a regular one. There is no need to go to the embassy. You can simply go through the process online. Filling out the application form, uploading documents (including a passport-size photo) and paying the relevant fees are all available online. eTA countries for Italy passport

Italian citizens can obtain eTA before traveling to the following 13 countries or regions. The eTA is short for electronic travel authorization. If you are an Italian citizen, you are eligible to get an eTA online. You can visit Canada without requiring a visa, but eTA is needed if arriving by air. Visa-free travel to China welcomed by people wanting to reunite with family

Jenny Zhang has plans to travel to China soon to reunite with her 100-year-old mum, and she has welcomed a move to give Australians visa-free entry for short trips.

"This is the best policy. It will provide great convenience to Chinese people living in Australia," she said.

"The Chinese community is very happy about this news."

The 15-day visa-free travel for Australians was announced by Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday, after a formal meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

"We agreed to provide each other with reciprocal access to five-year multiple entry visas for tourism, business and visiting family members — so as to better facilitate personal exchanges, China will also include Australia in its Visa Waiver Program," the premier said.

This change will also save Australians about $110, the current cost for a single-entry tourist visa.

The new visa-free travel scheme is due to come in within the next few months.

China's tourism industry peaked in 2019 at a value of $580 billion and has been recovering slowly, according to Statista.

They had forecast that it could take another five years to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels.

Not everyone happy with move

While Ms Zhang was thrilled with the upcoming change, Ramila Chanisheff, the president of the Australian Uyghur Tangritagh Women's Association said it would not help members of her community.

"Our family members … we can not even talk to them — let alone visit them," she told the ABC.

"Not all of us will be given visas to visit our family members. And if we do, we will be worried about our safety."

Dawa Sangmo, the Chinese liaison officer of the Tibet Information Office in Canberra raised similar worries.

"The visa-free policy is not only an issue that relates to our safety, but a matter that is more beneficial to China and its government," she told the ABC.

There was not much detail in the announcement, but Premier Li did mention it would be "reciprocal", making it easier for Chinese travellers to enter Australia.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the second highest amount of tourists visiting Australia came from China, only behind arrivals from New Zealand, as of April this year.

However, overall, the amount of people travelling out of China is down 40 per cent from pre-COVID levels in 2019, Reuters reported.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and China have mutually agreed to extend the visa exemption programme for visitors from both countries to enhance bilateral ties.

In a joint statement on Thursday (June 20) at the conclusion of Chinese Premier Li Qiang three-day official visit, both countries stated that China had agreed to extend its visa exemption facility for Malaysian citizens until the end of 2025 while Malaysia will extend the visa exemption for Chinese citizens until the end of 2026.

"Both leaders (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and China's Premier Li Qiang) welcome the keen interest to continue consultations and discussions on mutual visa exemption to facilitate the entry of the citizens of Malaysia and China," it said.

The statement stated that both sides also agreed to enhance education cooperation to a new level and strengthen cooperation on vocational education, joint scientific research and digital education.

Both countries also agreed to jointly set up institutes for advanced study, enhance interactions between think tanks and higher educational institutions, promote mutual visits between teachers and students and improve cultural exchanges and mutual learning.

The joint statement for both countries emphasised the commitment to deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership, moving towards a China-Malaysia community with a shared future.
