Is it still worth travelling to Morocco in January? Absolutely! Although this depends to some extent on your intended destinations within Morocco. Because although Morocco is always warmer than Europe in January, there is considerable variability in terms of temperatures within the country itself. Indeed, there are three separate climatic zones which determine the weather in different parts of Morocco.

Morocco in January: Weather in selected regions

Although Morocco in January is warmer than the weather in Europe, this is still the coldest month of the year. In the country’s interior, the Atlas Mountains and the desert, visitors should be prepared for stark drops in temperature from day to night. Depending on altitude, even sub-zero temperatures are not unheard-of. Meanwhile, along the Atlantic coastline, temperatures are much milder, making the January weather there more ambient than other parts of the country.

For a Moroccan holiday in January, the stretch of Atlantic coastline that lies between Rabat and Sidi Ifni is probably your best bet, along with southern Morocco and Marrakech. If travelling to other parts of the country at this time of year, be prepared for cooler temperatures, especially in the evening and at night. Be sure to pack plenty of warm clothing and check for heating when booking a hotel or riad.

Marrakech in January

January may be the coldest month of the year in Marrakech, but during the day the thermometer is still likely to climb to 20°C or more. As such, it’s usually possible to just wear a t-shirt. Enjoy pleasant weather and sit out on a roof terrace in the sunshine, even in January. Once the sun sets, however, the temperature drops noticeably. 

By late afternoon or early evening, you will probably be grateful for a light jacket or a jumper.

The fact that the weather in Marrakech is slightly cooler in January also offers certain advantages. After all, not everyone welcomes early morning temperatures nudging 39°C, particularly with a busy schedule of events or a city tour planned. Conversely, those who are sensitive to the cold should bring plenty of warm clothes. Also, be sure to book heated accommodation in Marrakech .

The Atlantic coast, Essaouira and Agadir in January

The weather on Morocco’s extensive Atlantic coastline is mostly influenced by the sway of the Atlantic Ocean, which stores heat and expels it more slowly than the air. Winters on the Moroccan coast are relatively mild and somewhat rainy.

But even on the coastline itself, some discernible variations emerge. For example, although the temperatures in Essaouira and Rabat remain broadly similar, the former is considerably less rainy. Due to its unique geographical position, the picturesque harbour city Essaouira is perpetually exposed to the wind, making it a veritable El Dorado for surfers and kiters alike.

Anyone who visits Morocco in January should definitely aim to spend a couple of days in Essaouira. It is still possible to swim in the sea in January, although the water temperature is admittedly rather fresh. Agadir is generally a better prospect for a beach holiday, mainly due to Essaouira’s famously constant wind.

The weather becomes progressively drier and warmer; the further south one travels from Essaouira. Located around 200 km to the south, Agadir has comparatively little rainfall. The average temperatures in this seaside resort are also warmer than those further north. 

Northern Morocco and Fes in January

The weather in northern Morocco tends to be fairly cool and damp throughout January. The Atlantic and the Mediterranean influence the climate on the coasts. Consequently, temperatures in January remain relatively mild. Further inland, this influence declines, the weather becomes increasingly continental, and the differences in temperature between daytime and night grow more distinct.

Fez is the largest city on Morocco’s northern coast, located at an altitude of 400m. There is significantly less rainfall here than in the coastal areas. In January, temperatures in Fez can fall to below zero overnight.

Naturally, the weather in Chefchaouen, Tangier or Fez will generally be warmer than anywhere in Europe, even in January. But in comparison to other parts of Morocco, the northern part of the country is cooler at this time of year, with more rain. For this reason, spring or autumn are better times for planning a visit to these cities.

Southern Morocco and the deserts in February

Southern Morocco is home to two incredibly beautiful regions of the Sahara Desert. Both of which you can visit on organised desert tours from Marrakech . The desert climate is exceptionally warm and dry. However, although temperatures rise to unbearably hot levels during the summer months, winter temperatures rarely climb above 30°C. And at night the mercury drops to below 5°C.

January is an ideal month for embarking upon a tour of the desert or enjoying some sporting activities in the world’s most giant sandpit. Pack a sleeping bag and plenty of warm clothes if you plan to stay overnight in a desert bivouac . 

If travelling to Morocco in January, visitors can expect to enjoy much warmer temperatures than those they are leaving behind in Europe. However, January is still the coldest month of the year in Morocco. Consequently, if travelling at this time of year, the southern part of the country, the Atlantic coast south of Essaouira and Marrakech are my recommended destinations. Desert tours are also an option at this time of year. They will be a highlight of any visit to the country.

Morocco in January – is it something worth experiencing? Yes, it most certainly is – in fact travelling to Morocco in january is definitely something to consider. Read on to find out why.

Morocco. Country of sunshine and chaos. Surely a place you’d reserve for the summer months, when it is at its best and brightest. Right?

Maybe not so much. By the time you reach the middle of winter in places like the USA, CAN and Europe, you might suddenly feel a desperate need to escape somewhere, anywhere with any semblance of warmth.

Luckily, living in Europe is like winning the country jackpot. You can fly to almost anywhere you fancy and often not for a too upsetting price. So, why wouldn’t you go? Particularly in winter.

Travelling to Morocco in the colder months mean there was cloudless skies and mid-twenties (seventies) weather for my trip.

So, here are some reasons why you should definitely travel to Morocco in January (and particularly Marrakech), or during the cooler season in general.

Why you should travel to Morocco in January

Why you should visit Morocco in January

Here are some reasons why you should consider taking a trip to Morocco in winter.

If you live in Europe, you travel a short distance for a completely different climate

It boggles my mind that the country of Morocco on the continent of AFRICA is only a three hour flight from London. Yet, this is the reality of the situation.

In those short three hours, you can travel to a country where the winter temperatures are often hotter than an English summer.

Why wouldn’t you do it?

I also like the fact that after that short distance, you’re in a country that has a completely different cultural experience to the one you’ve just left. So, why wouldn’t you travel to Morocco in January?!

I’m writing this from the perspective of being Australian. Three hours travel gets me either 2/3 of the way across my country, or to New Zealand. Both are destinations I thoroughly adore, but obviously a lot more similar in cultural attitudes!

It’s an inexpensive-ish destination

Morocco isn’t the cheapest of cheap destinations, but compared to other countries (we are talking the USA, Canada, UK, those in Western Europe, Australia and NZ here, to clarify) it seems pretty reasonable.

Most meals out cost less than $15 AUD and the food was good and plentiful. Plus, did I mention I’d pay just about anything to escape a UK winter? I definitely felt like I was getting a good deal.

The only time I felt we were getting properly ripped off was when we caught a taxi from the airport to our riad.

I’d been told by a friend who frequented the place what to expect to pay and had quoted that price to the taxi driver, who agreed on it.

When we reached our destination, he raised the price and wouldn’t let us out of the car until we agreed to pay it.

As I was travelling with another female friend, we decided the safest course of action was to pay it and curse him as he drove away.

Yes, I know that we were viewed as rich westerners who could afford to pay the extra, but it’s the principle of the matter. Plus it’s always fun to be taken advantage of, particularly when you’re a defenceless woman.

The weather is perfect in Morocco in winter

Marrakech in particular seems to have splendid weather all year round , with an average temperature of 29°C (84°F) in the hotter months and 13°C (55°F) in the wintertime.

I will admit I got incredibly lucky when I visited Morocco in January, with the temperature ranging in the early twenties (that’s mid-seventies for you Americans out there). The cloudless blue skies certainly helped add to this picture of perfection.

You might be able to ski… in AFRICA

What do you picture when you think of Africa? Searing heat? Beautiful beaches? An expanse of desert? ME TOO.

Except, Morocco truly is a country of many diverse climates. Including one that features of all things… SNOW.

Yep! The Atlas mountains, which you can visit within a day trip from Marrakech, regularly see snowfall in the winter months .

So, if you’re lucky, you might be able to have a bit of a snow break during your time in Morocco.

You can go home and brag to your friends that you managed to ski in Africa. They may not believe you… but you’ll know the truth in your heart.

Sweet mint tea tastes so much sweeter when it isn’t searingly hot outside

Personally, any country that is passionate about tea is a country I can get behind.

Moroccans happen to be mad about their mint tea – drinking it morning, noon and night.

Even as a passionate tea drinker, I will concede that drinking the stuff when it’s hopelessly hot outside is a labour of love or perhaps just an addiction.

It’s so much easier to enjoy tea when there’s a slight chill in the air and you realise you’re drinking it for the comfort value, rather than because you have an outright dependency on the stuff.

So, it is glorious in the early hours of the morning during your stay in Morocco, to come downstairs and start sipping on that first cup of tea of probably twenty, because the mint sure does taste good.

You’ll still be able to do everything you want to do in Morocco in winter

Places like Marrakech are touristy, but for good reason – they have plenty on offer.

We organised every activity we wanted to do when we arrived in the city and weren’t left wanting on anything.

Every tour had spots left, we were able to walk straight into a spa and get a service. We didn’t have to wait for seating at restaurants.

Plus I think any excess heat would have diminished certain experiences, like walking up the Atlas mountains to see what was admittedly a fairly disappointing waterfall.

We would have languished in the summer sun, which would have been wholly unpleasant for all involved.

Your brains won’t be addled by the heat whilst you try to haggle in the souk

The Middle East is hands down my favourite place to shop, because haggling is the best.

It’s not only a sport, it’s a psychological game, between you and the shop owner.

And what I like about it, is that everyone comes away feeling satisfied… you feel like you’ve got a good deal. They’ve made a sale. Smiles all round.

I particularly like my souvenirs from Marrakech because I feel like I worked for them.

And I did this successfully as I wasn’t melting in the heat like the Wicked Witch of the West at the time.

Dammit, I totally cancelled a trip to Morocco because I thought it’d be too cold in January. Where did you go hiking? I was interested in a little nature trip but it seemed too cold

Oh no! You should head out there while you’re in Berlin for sure. It was warm, sunny and lovely. We went out to the Atlas Mountains, about 45 mins from Marrakech. Our Riad organised a day tour. Climbed a mountain and realised about 1/5 of the way up that I was not fit enough to be climbing anything, or possibly even walking.

Hahaha I so badly wanted to get into the Atlas Mountains! Dammit. Perhaps I can arrange for March.

I was supposed to go to Morocco years ago, but the trip fell through due to a long story. Your experience makes me want to plan a new trip. I hadn’t thought of going this winter, but maybe this is a good idea especially since Morocco is out of the Schengen zone.

Whenever I think about Morocco, I think about camels. I have never been there but it is one of the places that I would like to visit someday. I am just not sure if it requires a tourist visa or not.Travelling means I need to work and save harder.

I almost went to Morocco myself when I lived in London and it’s true, it’s so well-connected! This is what I miss living in Australia. My partner tends to be just like you, without any expectations before visiting a new location and I suppose it helps to enjoy the place a bit more. We would love to entertain this idea of visiting Morocco in the winter time (or really, just anytime we can). I would love to check out some AirBnBs in other countries as we have only tried them in the States but the idea of a Riad entices me as well. Reminds me of what traditional ryokans are in Japan.

I’ve stayed in a Ryokan as well as a Riad and they are far superior to Airbnb. Although I’ve not had a lot of good experiences with the service, so that’s probably why I feel that way.

I absolutely loved Morocco! I also went w/little to no expectations and I was completely blown away. Also, I felt like everywhere I turned was some other stunning photo waiting to happen. Great food, friendly people, interesting history– what’s not to like?

Agadir , 20 km (13 miles) south, has more resorts and milder swells, so it is probably better for beginners , though Taghazout has plenty of surf shops that teach and equip those new to surfing. January is the peak time to enjoy catching the up-to-4-meter (13-foot) waves!

Taghazout also offers camel rides in the surrounding arid countryside, good hiking in the coastal end of the Atlas chain, or spots for a quiet time on the around 20 nearby beaches.

Tip: Don't forget a wetsuit, as the ocean temperature is only around 14°C (57°F)!

3) Journey into the Desert

To see the best of the desert in Morocco, you would need to travel by road for a day over the Atlas Mountains and into the Sahara on the Algerian border. Fez or Marrakesh are popular places to begin the journey.

Mergouza is the top base town to head to for desert access , from which the warm orange dunes of Erg Chebbi are a matter of minutes away, though it is a journey into the utter wilderness. A campfire under the stars there is a magical experience, but wrap up warm in your bivouac, as its January nights approach freezing.

4) Go Skiing in the Atlas Mountains

Morocco is good as a different and relaxing (or challenging) place to ski, and it is seldom at all busy. Few people travel to Morocco just for the skiing. With history-filled Marrakesh (see 1. above) as a base, you'll find plenty more to explore to complement Oukaimeden's 20 un-pisted runs, which suit leisurely skiers and confident beginners, those who don't need much support on its crisp and dry virgin snows. 

(More adventurous skiers trek up to the High Atlas peaks like Toubkal at 4,167 m (13,671 ft), highest peak in N. Africa, and ski down.)

Oukaimeden is Morocco's top ski resort, only about 60 km (40 miles) south of Marrakesh in the Atlas Mountains, which takes 1½ hours, so it's easy to make daytrips there for some skiing (or trekking if the snow doesn't come). Its 10 km (6 miles) of slopes extend up to 3,200 m (10,500 ft), and they offer "excellent skiing and snowboarding" (Viator). Ski gear is there for hire and snowboards. 6 J-bars and one 2-person chairlift service the slopes.

Celebrated: January 12 and 13 (first day of the Julian Calendar)

Yennayer, Morocco's New Year, has been celebrated from 2018 according to the Amazigh (Berber) calendar.

It is worth catching if you are in Berber areas on January 12/13 and are interested in lively ethnic-culture events. The Berber People mainly live around the Atlas Mountains, lying between Marrakesh and Ouazazate. Oukaimeden, mentioned above for skiing, is in the Atlases.

4. Middle of the Low Season: Least Crowding and Cost

January is one of the least crowded and cheapest months to travel in Morocco. If you don't mind the cooler weather you can save on flights and hotels and see the sights with few tourists in your photos.

There are mild temperatures, even some warm days, in most of Morocco in January, so it may be t-shirts and shorts weather (or light trousers and shirts to be more culturally sensitive) if you are active. If you are in a windy area, like on the coast or in the mountains, you would need at least two layers, maybe with a light jacket.

In January, it is cold at night in the desert and mountains , so remember to take enough warm clothes. Some riads (guesthouses or hotels in traditional buildings), especially those in the north, do not provide adequate heating.

January is one of Morocco's rainiest months, but it still only comes in light showers at most on 1 in 3 days in the most interesting cities, like Fez. A waterproof is optional for city sightseeing, but a good idea if you're hiking in the mountains, or on the windy coasts or in the desert where it would be a good windproof layer.

Morocco gets warmer and drier as you head southwards, towards the equator. Coastal cities to the west, like Agadir, experience average highs of 21°C with five days of rain in January. Marrakech, located in the country’s north, has mild daytime temperatures, with mercury peaking at a maximum of 19°C. However, it gets cold in Marrakech after sundown, so pack some warm clothes for the night.

The Sahara Desert—largely off-limits in the summer months— sees significant foot traffic in January as the temperature sits comfortably at 22°C.

Morocco’s location on the north coast of Africa means that it experiences a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, dry summers.

January is the coldest month of the year in Morocco, with temperatures averaging around 10 degrees Celsius ( 50 degrees Fahrenheit). The nights can be particularly chilly with temperatures dipping below freezing in some parts of the country.

What to Pack for Morocco in January

Packing to Morocco for January means packing for cold weather. Your packing list should include lots of warm clothing, like a few sweaters, a raincoat, thermal shirts and leggins, socks, and gloves.

If you’ll be spending time in Morocco’s mountains, you’ll also want to pack snowshoes, gloves, and a thick warm jacket.

It’s also good to keep in mind that the weather in Morocco can change a lot which means even in January you should expect warmer days when the sun is out.

The ideal would be to pack clothes that can be layered so that when the temperature does rise you can take a few layers off.

A warm shawl or a scarf is also a good Morocco packing essential as it can be used as an extra layer of clothing or for when you’re inside and the air conditioning is cranked up.

An umbrella is something you can buy when you get to Morocco so you don’t have to pack one, but if you have room in your suitcase it’s not a bad idea to bring one along.

Visit the Sahara Desert

Believe it or not, it can actually be quite nice to visit the Sahara Desert in January. The days are cooler which makes for more comfortable conditions when exploring Morocco’s desert regions.

Have fun at Oukaimden ski resort

Located about 60 kilometers from Marrakech, Ouakaimden in Morocco is considered to be Africa’s highest ski resort.

If you are visiting Morocco in January and you’re a fan of skiing or snowboarding, this month is the perfect time to visit Oukaimden as the slopes are usually covered in snow.

There are a few other winter escape ideas in Morocco, such as Ifrane city which is located in Morocco’s Middle Atlas mountains, and Imlil village which is a great place to go hiking.

Take a day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira

The coastal town of Essaouira is located about 3 hours away from Marrakech and it’s a great place to escape the cold weather in January.

Being a coastal city, the temperatures in Essaouira are usually a few degrees warmer than in Marrakech, and there’s plenty to see and do in this charming Moroccan city.

Morocco is a fantastic year-round vacation destination, but choosing the best time of year to travel will depend on your interests and holiday needs.

The mild months from October to April see an influx of travelers from the northern hemisphere, who flock to North Africa to escape long winters in Europe or North America. For the rest of the year – especially in July and August along the coast –  Morocco is busy with domestic travelers and international visitors taking advantage of package holiday deals, music festivals and outdoor activities such as surfing, kiteboarding and hiking. 

Whether you come for the sun, the surf, the wind sports, the outdoors, local festivals or the rich culture, here's our guide to the best times to travel to Morocco.

September is the best month for good weather and fewer crowds

Domestic and international travelers head back to school and work after the August summer holidays, so September is a great time to visit. The weather is warm, with long sunny days, balmy waters and quiet beaches. It's also an excellent time to visit cultural sights in coastal cities such as Essaouira , Rabat , Casablanca , Tetouan , and Tangier . Inland, Marrakesh and surrounding regions can still be quite hot in September.

September to November and March to May are best for hiking and visiting Marrakesh

For sunny days and temperatures that aren't too hot or cold, visit Marrakesh in spring (March to May) or fall (September to November). Avoid the summer months of June to August unless you have a love affair with air conditioning and 38°C (100°F) heat; nights can be cold from December to February, especially in riads (courtyard homes) without central heating.

During May and October, you can travel comfortably to Morocco’s portion of the Sahara Desert – expect to find most desert camps closed from June to August due to the excessive heat. Conversely, days are shorter during the winter months from December to February and the nights and early mornings can be freezing, particularly when sleeping under canvas. Sandstorms occur from January to May, but Saharwians are used to these storms; follow their lead by wearing a Tuareg scarf to protect your face from the sand and sun.

The High Atlas region is a year-round hiking destination, but the weather is mildest from April to June and September to November, creating ideal trekking conditions for all fitness levels. If you visit in May, you'll see the M’Goun Valley come alive for the Festival des Roses. If you prefer to trek at lower altitudes consider a visit to the Anti-Atlas mountain range in springtime. This season is for wildflowers, spring blossoms in the trees and quiet hiking trails. An annual almond blossom festival takes place in Tafraoute in February or March, depending on when the trees flower and the harvest.

The mild spring and fall are also the best times to see migratory birds. The top birding spot on the coast is Oualidia ; its peaceful lagoon is a haven for resident and migratory waterbird species. Souss-Massa National Park also attracts migratory birds, which gather here in large numbers before or after their Atlantic crossings.

December to February is the season for celebrations, surfing and skiing

The weather can be cold and wet from December to February, especially in the north, but winter is an excellent time for city and cultural explorations. In Marrakesh and other hubs popular with foreign residents and visiting travelers, you can enjoy epic celebrations over the Christmas and New Year holidays. However, accommodation prices increase significantly over the peak vacation dates from December 22 until January 7. Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, falls in the first week of January, so there may be some local festivities around at this time as well. 

In deep winter, the peaks of the High Atlas are covered in snow – perfect for those who prefer to ski down rather than hike up mountains. The snow can create hazardous conditions for driving on remote roads, and some routes will close, but the main skiing areas – Oukaimeden and Ifrane – are accessible and skiing will be a fun addition to your North African adventure.

Winter is when the Atlantic swell is most consistent on the Moroccan coast. December to February sees the largest waves, and surfers flock to Taghazout, Mirleft , Sidi Ifni and other spots along Morocco’s west coast. A lively center for surf culture, Taghazout hosts an annual surf expo in October and international competitions such as the World Surf League in January and February.

June to September is the best time for festivals and kitesurfing

Morocco’s long summer days and nights are ideal for outdoor music events, as bands and musicians fill venues nationwide. Top festivals to look out for include the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music (dates vary from June to September), Essaouira’s Gnaoua World Music Festival in June, the Asilah Festival in July and October and Casablanca’s Jazzablanca in June. Rabat’s Mawazine – one of the world’s largest festivals – is set to return in 2024 after a three-year hiatus. Book accommodations well in advance and be prepared for higher prices.

During July and August, inland temperatures can soar to over 38°C (100°F), but on the Atlantic coast cooling breezes and misty fog keep temperatures down to around 27°C (80°F).  Agadir , Dakhla and Essaouira are particularly popular with domestic travelers in August thanks to the long sunny days and lifeguard-protected beaches. While the Moroccan sun is strong, beach parasols and covered outdoor seating areas are easy to find, and the ocean is calmer and warmer – perfect for swimming, riding pedalos and stand-up paddleboarding. The mellower waves from June to November are ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers.

Kitesurfing and windsurfing are possible year-round at several flat water spots in Essaouira and Dakhla due to consistent trade winds from the Atlantic, but April to September brings reliable high winds thanks to the thermal effect along the Moroccan coastline. An annual international kitesurfing competition is held in Dakhla at the end of September, drawing competitors and spectators from around the world. 

Experience Morocco without the crowds during Ramadan

Check the dates for Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting; these change each year. This important annual festival is a quiet and spiritual time to experience Morocco. Though many food establishments close during the day, you'll still find places to eat at hotels.

Depending on the area of the country you visit, Morocco weather in January can fluctuate a great deal . In the desert, daytime temperatures can be as high as 20 degrees Celsius. But once the sun goes down, things get cold. And in the mountains, it is cold day and night. January is also the wettest month of the year. If you are coming from a place like Seattle, Washington, January rain may not seem like a big deal. • If you can fit them in with your other luggage – Sleeping bags are always great to have in the winter in Morocco. The nights can get COLD and many places have no heat. And even if an accommodation claims to have heat, you can’t always count on that.
• If you can’t fit sleeping bags into your travel gear – Be sure to pack warm pajamas and/or thermals to help you stay warm at night. Disposable hand warmers and hot water bottles are also great options for getting your bed warm at night.
• If you plan to attend any of the festivities – (and even if you don’t) – be sure to tuck a couple of bags of candy into your belongings. It’s great to have candy in your pockets to share with kids as you make your way around Morocco.

Morocco in January: Why it is the best time to visit!

I've been looking forward to talking about my trip to Morocco. It was one of my most memorable trips because of the breathtaking scenery, delicious cuisine, rich history, and rich culture. It was also my first time visiting Europe (with a 12+ hour layover) and North Africa.

If you've kept up with my posts, you may know my fondness for escaping the cold . I discovered the perfect destination for this: Morocco! Visiting Morocco in January was undoubtedly the best decision I've made. The weather is perfect – cool and comfortable during the day and slightly chilly in the morning and at night.

Are you looking to visit Morocco during the winter months?

Visiting Morocco in January falls between the * low season * and * peak season * as the weather is slightly chilly and with some rain. My trip to Morocco took place a week after New Year's when most children were back in school. It wasn't crowded when I visited, and I prefer it that way. It is one of the best times of the year to visit Morocco if you prefer comfortable weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices on plane tickets. ☺︎

It may seem unbelievable, but my visit to Morocco helped cure an unpleasant cold I had suffered for weeks. I sincerely hope you don't fall ill before your trip, but the weather there may also work its healing magic on you if you do.

Even though Morocco in the month of January is considered one of the coldest months of the year to visit , it felt like early spring day weather. You might encounter rainy days here and there, but it is not enough to stop you from exploring Morocco. It is certainly not warm enough for you to dive into the ocean though, but it is comfortable enough to walk around without wearing a heavy coat.

How to pack for morocco in january.

Bring warm clothes you can layer up, such as long sleeves, undershirts, hoodies, light jackets, cardigans, &, etc .

You can wear pants, jeans, trousers, sweatpants, or long skirts for the bottoms.

A light scarf or beanie for the night chills.

When planning a trip to Morocco, remember that the weather can vary depending on the region . If you're planning to visit the Sahara desert, expect warmer temperatures. However, it may be cooler in January if you're heading to other parts of Morocco near the coastal areas or Northern Morocco.

When packing for your trip, consider selecting lightweight, easily layered clothing instead of bulky, heavy sweaters. This will save space in your suitcase and allow you to adjust your outfit throughout the day, depending on the temperature. As you explore your destination during the day, you may want to remove some layers to stay comfortable in the warm sun. I hope this tip helps you pack efficiently and enjoy your travels!

January has some popular destinations to visit, but many other areas in Morocco are worth exploring during this time too. If you're backpacking around Morocco, I suggest visiting multiple regions and making the most of your trip.

If you're planning a visit to Casablanca, January is an excellent time to go . The weather during this month is pleasant and comfortable, with temperatures hovering between 63°F and 48°F. This makes it a perfect time to explore the city's many attractions, including the Hassan II Mosque, medinas, and art deco buildings. As you stroll through Casablanca, you will notice the city's deep appreciation for art, which is beautifully displayed on numerous buildings.

If you happen to be a fan of the classic film Casablanca, you've likely already made arrangements to visit Rick's Cafe, but if you haven't yet, you might want to because it is always packed there!

Don't forget to take a trip to the nearby beaches. Even though the water temperature is not warm enough to swim, it is still worth visiting to enjoy a cup of Moroccan mint tea at a cafe near the beach!

If you plan a trip to Morocco, consider visiting its stunning capital, Rabat , in January. The weather is pleasant, with an average temperature of 63°F/45°F, making it a comfortable time to explore the city's many attractions. Don't miss the chance to visit the Royal Palace, Kasbah des Oudaias, and Hassan Tower.

You can also immerse yourself in Moroccan culture by wandering through the medina or shopping for unique souvenirs at the local markets. If you need time to unwind, the nearby beaches offer a perfect spot to relax in the sun or watch the sunset. Visiting Rabat in January guarantees a memorable experience whether you're seeking adventure or relaxation.

If you're looking for a destination in January, Fès is also an ideal choice. With its mild climate, visitors can comfortably explore the city's various attractions. The weather in Fès in January is pretty comfortable, with highs at 62°F and lows at 41°F.

The Medina of Fès, a Unesco World Heritage Site , and its bustling markets are particularly popular, offering traditional crafts, spices, and handmade leather goods. For a more guided experience, visitors can take organized tours through winding alleyways or unwind at one of the many cafes or restaurants in the area.

My personal highlight was having the most delicious Moroccan coffee in Fès - an unforgettable experience!

If you're planning a winter escape, Marrakech is a top-notch destination! Marrakech may sound familiar to you as it is often featured in television shows. With temperatures ranging from 66°F to 43°F in January, it's an ideal time to explore the city's many attractions. You'll be spoilt for choice, from browsing the vibrant markets to exploring historical landmarks you cannot find anywhere else. Be sure to visit Jemaa el-Fnaa, a cultural landmark serving as a marketplace for locals and tourists. Although it may initially seem overwhelming, take your time and enjoy shopping around!

Lastly, there are many places to offer camel rides in Morocco, and one of the popular tours is in Marrakech. Make sure to book a tour for a camel ride in the Sahara desert!

Chefchaouen

Located in the Rif Mountains of Morocco , Chefchaouen is a breathtakingly beautiful city renowned for its blue-washed buildings and charming cobblestone streets, making it a captivating destination for tourists. Although January temperatures can range from 59°F to 38°F, and you may encounter some rainfall along the way, visiting Chefchaouen is still well worth it.

Don't miss out on the stunning beauty of Derb El Assri's stairs, as they are truly a sight to behold.

The cooler temperatures, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural attractions such as Medina markets and Sahara deserts will undoubtedly pique your interest. Where To Go To Morocco In January

An important fishing port of Morocco, Agadir owes its fame to its fine sandy beaches and sunshine for about 10 months a year. Average temperatures are between 7°C and 22°C in January, they can go down to 2°C and up to 31°C in some years.

Agadir is less than an hour's flight from cities such as Casablanca and Marrakech, and fewer than three hours from the major capitals of Europe and West Africa. It is accessible by sea and by motorway and has an excellent air service. It is a true-to-life city with a marina.

ASILAH: 

Asilah is located 45km south of Tangiers. With its white houses and narrow streets, it enjoys sunshine for about 5 hours a day with temperatures in January between 10°C and 17°C on average.

CASABLANCA:

Casablanca enjoys about 5 hours of sunshine per day at this time of year. Average temperatures are between 11°C and 18°C in January.

CHEFCHAOUEN: 

Chefchaouen gets about 5 hours of sunshine per day in January with an average temperature between 11°C and 18°C.

ESSAOUIRA :

Essaouira gets about 8 hours of sunshine a day, with temperatures averaging between 11°C and 19°C in January. At the foot of the Great Atlas, Essaouira is built on a rocky peninsula. With a large choice of leisure activities to make your stay more enjoyable, from aquatic activities to other land-based activities, you will have a great time. The medina of Fez, listed as a World Heritage Site since 1981 and home to a variety of craft activities, is the most visited area in the region. Then the mountain area and its spas make the region an ideal destination in January. As well as all this tourist potential, the region of Fez Meknes is also the capital of thermal therapies.

OUARZAZATE:

In January, Ouarzazate enjoys a good 7 hours of sunshine per day. Average temperatures are between 3°C and 18°C. The majestic Ouarzazate, a mixture of Kasbah, oases, flourishing valleys and a vast desert plateau, attracts tourists of different nationalities, filmmakers, adventure-seeking tourists, writers seeking serenity and tranquillity and those who only want to spend a good holiday.

Magical Morocco: The Beginning…

‘Would you want to go to Morocco?’ – These were the words that marked the beginning of an epic 16-day adventure across several cities in Morocco.

I can’t remember the exact moment this country popped into my wanderlust dreams. Perhaps it was when Mofe of Naija Nomads talked about her visit during one of our video sessions for ‘ Through Our Eyes ‘ but when Mark asked if I wanted to go, my answer was a resounding ‘YES!’

The result of this was 16 truly magical days, navigating the maze of vibrant squares and bustling medinas, watching beautiful sunrises and sunsets over deserts and oceans. Driving through winding roads with views of snow-capped mountains and having so many beautiful and unique experiences.

Planning the Trip

Of course, the first step was planning the trip. Now, I know how planning a trip with avid travellers can be. Everyone has an idea of what experiences they are looking forward to and sometimes, managing these expectations can be difficult. So I was a bit nervous at first for this phase. But I had already sort of travelled with Mark twice before, so I knew I had nothing to worry about.

We decided on the dates we wanted to visit and had about six months to plan everything out. During that time, we worked on different versions of itineraries based on what was important to us. We also weighed the pros and cons of having a fixed itinerary, booking our accommodations and bus/train tickets in advance versus winging the trip and booking things as we go.

Since we were both not keen on staying in particular riads, (we actually planned on Couchsurfing for the most part), we leaned towards the latter option.

It wasn’t possible to fit in all four within our time frame so we narrowed down to three and Chefchaouen made the cut! ( Feyi’s trip and photos were the triggers!)

PS: It makes sense to book in advance for the popular riads or hotels as they get sold out quickly. But if you want to book places just before you have to travel, you’ll still be fine as platforms like Booking.com or Airbnb have an overwhelming amount of options to choose from. Many of which allow travellers to change dates without cost.

Just the Hassan II Mosque and a few restaurants including Rick’s Cafe. I also enjoyed walking along the Corniche. Didn’t get to visit the medina and souks which you may want to check out. Would you have time to see other cities in Morocco during your visit?

Wow! Amarachi I can’t begin to explain my excitement now. I have been on Morocco case for some days now because I plan to make a trip 30th March. I have done all kinds of sketch plan with respect to the cities I want to visit, accommodation cost using airbnb and booking.com transportation cost moving about the cities (Casa, Mara, ESS, Fez etc)…lol. In fact, in my mind and paper, all is set…lol. But then comes the almighty travel joy killer of most Nigerian passport holders. I got stuck here and have exchanged several mails to this effect. Then I just said I should check Amarachi’s site to see if there is anything about Morocco travel there and boom to my face! Wow! a whole 16 days? This babe shaa, I dey gbadu your style shaa……lol. Lovely experience. Morocco is certainly a good vacation destination and it’s a lot cheaper than going to Europe and America however there is racism there against blacks, you probably didn’t experience it because you travelled with a non black person.

A Gabonese colleague who schooled there told me how she was beaten up on the street for just being black and a lot of her black friends also experienced similar racism driven abuses.

That’s very worrisome. I’m sorry to hear that. I did read a few articles about racism in the country before travelling and I think I sort of braced myself for the worst. But apart from the Rasta thing, I don’t think I encountered any DIRECT form of abuse. I don’t know if it was because I had a partner who isn’t black (like you mentioned) or for some other reasons..

Morocco is now ringing in my ears. I am having a problem deciding between Kenya and Morocco. Your pictures were truly magical. Hope you will time to talk about their food in your next post.
