What Are the Challenges of Living in a Tiny House?

Are there any financing options available for purchasing a tiny house.

I’m Theodore, and I love tiny houses. In fact, I’m the author of Tiny House 43, a book about tiny houses that are also tree houses. I think they’re magical places where imaginations can run wild and adventures are just waiting to happen.

While tree houses are often associated with childhood, they can be the perfect adult retreat. They offer a cozy space to relax and unwind, surrounded by nature. And since they’re typically built on stilts or raised platforms, they offer stunning views that traditional homes simply can’t match.

If you’re looking for a unique and romantic getaway, a tree house tiny house might just be the perfect option.

"My decision to build a Tiny house was based on a ton of research and lots of comparisons between builders. In the end, I am delighted that I chose Oregon Cottage Company as my builder." Pam Chase, Willamette Valley, OR
"I just received my brand new Ynez Cottage & I love it! I have already had many visitors — including people who just knock on the door asking to see inside. A family even a family followed it in from the expressway (on the day it was delivered). Everyone has commented on the craftsmanship and design." Nancy Juraszek, Carpinteria, CA
"I drove to Cottage Grove, Oregon to meet Todd Miller and tour his model home. Wow! It's absolutely beautiful. The quality of construction is the best of the best. It's structurally engineered to withstand just about any disaster thrown at it." Brenda Ruble to Kent at the Tiny House Blog, Portland, OR
"When I started researching tiny houses several years ago, I found a blog photo of the Ynez and tracked down the Oregon Cottage Company. Todd worked closely with me to accommodate my home office and pet-friendly interior. After living in it through all seasons, I find that it completely fits my aesthetics and active lifestyle." Pam McLellan Eugene, OR
"Todd blends total competence in the architectural field with a generous, patient, and thoughtful personal nature. I cannot imagine having a more seamless interaction from start to finish." Luke Thompkinson, Vashon Island, WA

More amazing tiny homes! Check out all the tiny house ideas, and gather inspiration for your own tiny home!  Which one would YOU live in!?

14 More Amazing Tiny Homes! | Tiny House Ideas

Tiny houses are all the rage! Why? It all began with the  small house movement , an architectural and social movement that advocates living simply in tiny houses. General speaking, a tiny house is any home less than 1,000 square feet, built with the intention of living purposefully and sustainably. A conscious movement to have less, and do more. Or, to do more with less. Either way, the tiny house is a step toward using your space; walking away from the trend of having space for the sake of space. Tiny houses are lovable and creative homes. Homes that you can very easily order, buy off the market, or build yourself ! From small and basic (plywood everything), to astoundingly complicated (walls that move), we've rounded up some more of our own favorites here! Check them out!

I pulled a 33 ft RV around for 14 years ( and lived in it) and I am more than a little aware of what an vehical can pull as far as weight goes. I see these tiny homes made of a LOT of wood(heavy) and on wheels. But there is no mention of how much they weigh. I ended up pulling my (lived in) RV with a one ton dually. Even tho I had been pulling it with a 1/2 ton that was set up to tow. The wt of truck and RV only came to 17,000 lbs. which is a feather wt for my truck ( I had it set up to tow a 40 ft Fifth wheel which would have weighed in at around 24 to 34,000 plus pounds. The truck was rated to pull 36,000 lbs. Sooo seeing these tiny houses on wheels and. no info for wt. is a little scary to say the least. Where would I get THAT info?

View Escher by New Frontier Design

In a world where the principles of minimalism and sustainability are gaining increasing popularity, the movement on tiny house plans has garnered substantial attention. Leading the charge in this movement are Tiny Houses on Wheels (THOWs), which present innovative design solutions enabling people to live comfortably while reducing their carbon footprint.

There are many ideas regarding THOW concepts and design that shed light on the advantages of mobile living solutions, the harmonious relationship between sustainability and compact living, off-grid concepts, and practical furniture options for these diminutive yet highly efficient dwellings.

The tiny house movement, particularly Tiny Houses on Wheels, is gaining traction as people embrace sustainable and minimalist living.

  • THOW offers a unique lifestyle with the freedom to wake up to different views and locations regularly.
  • Living in a tiny house on wheels isn't just about simplicity, it's about sustainability.
  • It holds a promising future, serving as a solution for modern nomads and creative spaces that integrate sustainable living.
  • It offers economic efficiency through reduced upfront costs and lower ongoing expenses, making resources available for experiences and adventures.
  • It inherently has a smaller ecological footprint due to their minimized space and eco-friendly materials.
  • Going off-grid is possible with solar power, water filtration, propane appliances, composting, greywater systems, and rainwater collection.

Emergence and Popularity of THOW Lifestyle

With the world increasingly pivoting towards sustainable living, the tiny house on wheels lifestyle is catching on. More and more individuals are redefining home design and creating their mobile tiny homes. Swapping ostentatious mansions for compact, efficient homes, these pioneers are changing the face of home living.

Imagine waking up with a different view every day—lush forests one week, sunny beaches the next. That's not holidaying—that's living the THOW lifestyle. The mobile tiny homes are not just revolutionizing spaces, they're revolutionizing experiences. In fact, there’s a trend in the market that offers tiny house on wheels for sale .

For a tiny home to be comfortable, it must be well designed. Unique designs often embrace multi functionality. Every piece of furniture serves more than one purpose, adding layers of functionality to compact spaces.

It isn't just about simplicity—it's about sustainability. These homes, often built with recycled materials, epitomize green living. Some of the best models feature solar panels, composting toilets, and even rainwater catchment systems. They're a testament to what's achievable when we prioritize the planet as much as comfort.

THOW designs hold a promising future. They act as the solution for the modern nomad, integrate sustainable living, and bring forth a lot of room for creativity. Whoever said big things come in small packages must have known about tiny house on wheels—a lifestyle choice that’s redefining our concept of home and living.

Benefits of mobile living solutions

The appeal of mobile living solutions, goes beyond the freedom to travel and explore. It offers various benefits that can make you look for a tiny house for sale!

Here are the primary advantages that make THOW an appealing choice for individuals seeking a more sustainable lifestyle in a minimalist house.

Economic Efficiency

THOWs offer a significant financial advantage. Conventional homes often come with burdensome mortgages and utility bills, whereas tiny house on wheels owners benefit from lower upfront costs and reduced ongoing expenses. This financial freedom allows individuals to channel their resources into experiences and adventures rather than being shackled by mortgage payments.

Reduced Environmental Impact

Tiny houses on wheels inherently possess a smaller ecological footprint compared to larger, traditional homes. With their minimized physical space, they require fewer construction materials, less energy for heating and cooling, and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, THOWs are often designed with eco-friendly materials and systems that amplify their positive environmental impact.

The capacity to relocate one's home at will is a major draw for tiny house on wheels enthusiasts. Whether individuals yearn for a change of scenery, wish to explore new destinations, or need to move for work or family reasons, it offers ultimate flexibility. This mobility empowers individuals to live life on their own terms.

Streamlined Living

The limited space encourages a minimalist lifestyle. Many discover that downsizing their possessions and concentrating on what truly matters leads to a more fulfilling and uncluttered existence. THOWs compel inhabitants to prioritize essentials and eliminate excesses.

Combining Sustainability with Compact Living

Compact living is the heart and soul of the movement, but it's more than just dwelling in a small space; it's about fostering an environmentally responsible and sustainable lifestyle. Here, we explore design principles and ideas that demonstrate the synthesis of sustainability and compact living in THOWs:

Energy Efficiency

You can integrate energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, and well-insulated walls and windows to curtail energy consumption. Solar panels and wind turbines can also be incorporated to generate renewable energy, empowering homeowners to live off the grid.

Sustainable Materials

Construction can employ sustainable building materials like reclaimed wood, bamboo, and recycled steel. These materials not only mitigate environmental impact but also infuse unique character and charm into the home.

Rainwater Harvesting

Capturing and utilizing rainwater for non-potable purposes like watering plants and flushing toilets can be an eco-friendly enhancement. It diminishes water consumption and dependence on municipal water sources.

Composting Toilets

Traditional flush toilets are notorious water guzzlers. Composting toilets offer a sustainable alternative by transforming waste into nutrient-rich compost, thereby reducing water usage and fostering eco-friendly waste management.

Off-Grid Tiny House on Wheels Ideas

Many enthusiasts dream of going off-grid to attain self-sufficiency and liberate themselves from utility bills. The following are off-grid THOW concepts and solutions to realize this aspiration.

Solar Power

Solar panels are a popular choice for off-grid living. They can generate electricity to power lights, appliances, and even heating and cooling systems. Battery storage systems permit the storage of surplus energy for use during cloudy days or at night.

Water Filtration

Investing in a high-quality water filtration system is imperative for off-grid living. It guarantees a clean and safe water supply, whether sourced from a well, a creek, or a rainwater collection system.

Propane Appliances

Propane-powered appliances, including stoves, water heaters, and refrigerators, can operate independently of the electrical grid. Propane stands out as an efficient and dependable energy source for off-grid living.

Composting and Greywater Systems

As previously mentioned, composting toilets can significantly reduce water usage and eliminate the need for a sewage connection. In addition, greywater systems can treat and reuse wastewater for non-potable purposes, further minimizing water waste.

Rainwater Collection

Installing a rainwater harvesting system can furnish a sustainable water source for your off-grid THOW. Properly filtered and stored rainwater can serve various household needs.

Space-Saving Furniture Options for Your Mobile Home

One of the most formidable challenges is optimizing the utilization of limited space. Ingeniously designed and space-saving furniture can revolutionize the functionality of a tiny home. Consider the following furniture options to make the most of your mobile living space:

Folding Tables

Wall-mounted or collapsible tables can function as dining areas or workstations when required and can be conveniently stowed away when not in use. These tables are especially advantageous in kitchens and home offices.

Murphy Beds

Murphy beds represent a classic space-saving solution. They can be neatly folded up against the wall during the day, liberating valuable floor space. Contemporary Murphy bed designs often incorporate additional storage options.

Loft beds create supplementary floor space by elevating the sleeping area. Beneath the loft, you can harness the space for a home office, storage, or even a cozy sitting area.

Modular Furniture

Modular furniture pieces can be customized and reconfigured to serve different purposes. For instance, modular sofas with built-in storage can be adapted to create a seating area, a guest bed, or even a dining space.

Wall Shelves and Storage

Harnessing vertical wall space is critical. Wall shelves, pegboards, and other storage solutions can help maintain order and accessibility without cluttering the limited floor area.

Sliding Doors and Pocket Doors

Traditional swinging doors can monopolize valuable space when opened. Sliding doors or pocket doors offer sleek alternatives that optimize room space.

Multipurpose Furniture

Hunt for furniture pieces that multitask, such as a sofa that transforms into a bed or an ottoman endowed with concealed storage.

To conclude, Tiny Houses on Wheels (THOWs) epitomize a unique and sustainable way of life, intertwining mobility, compactness, and ecological mindfulness. By embracing it, individuals can relish the advantages of economic efficiency, minimized environmental impact, simplified living, and the liberty to explore new horizons. To further elevate the sustainability and functionality of these homes, the inclusion of off-grid solutions and space-saving furniture is paramount. Whether you are an eco-conscious adventurer or an individual seeking to streamline and simplify your life, THOWs offer an enticing avenue to lead a more sustainable existence without sacrificing comfort and convenience.

Delve into the expanding realm of Tiny Houses on Wheels (THOWs), where the intersection of sustainability and simplicity provides an exceptional way of life, economic effectiveness, and the liberty to travel, all while reducing environmental impacts and adopting a lifestyle in a minimalist house.

Take a Virtual Tour of IKEA's New Sustainable Tiny Home

IKEA has designed and built a sustainable tiny home, and the space is available for free virtual tours online.

Sophie Hirsh - Author

Oct. 2 2020, Updated 2:38 p.m. ET

There are so many benefits to moving into a tiny home (as long as you can handle living in close quarters, of course) — and IKEA wants to give tiny house hopefuls an inside look at the lifestyle. So, IKEA has designed and built a sustainable tiny home , and the space is available for free virtual tours online.

Along with brand studio Vox Creative, IKEA created the “stylish, sustainable, and affordable” 187-square-foot tiny home , after being inspired by their “shared commitments to sustainability, inclusivity and innovation.” The goal of the project is to prove “that anyone, anywhere can live a more sustainable life,” according to IKEA.

“We built a sustainable tiny home from the ground up to better educate and inspire consumers to bring sustainability into their own lives,” IKEA added. The brand also helps this project will “[generate] awareness of the tiny home and [illustrate] the big impact that small, daily decisions can make for a better, more sustainable world ."

You can take a free virtual tour of IKEA's tiny home online.

The tiny, mobile house was actually built back in March, and IKEA planned to take the tiny home on a tour across the U.S., stopping at various sustainable events around the country, letting people explore the small space. But once the coronavirus pandemic struck, IKEA obviously had to change plans.

So, IKEA and Vox Creative worked with Curbed to launch an in-depth virtual tour of the tiny home . The virtual tour is scattered with details about the space-saving furniture, electricity, appliances, and more, as well as tips on how people can make their own homes (whether tiny, large, or anywhere in between) more environmentally-friendly — because whether or not you’re ready to move into a tiny home, there’s so much to learn from the tiny home lifestyle.

IKEA's tiny home was photographed for the virtual tour on a sunny open field, flanked by a cozy outdoor seating area and solar panels. Once you virtually enter the Scandinavian design-inspired home, you’ll see eco-minded details like a water-saving sink, a gas-free portable cooktop, a wooden countertop made from “the whole tree,” and kitchen cabinets made from recycled plastic bottles.

Are tiny homes sustainable?

Of course, whether or not a tiny home is sustainable depends on the actual details of the home in question — but generally, tiny homes do have a lower environmental impact than larger homes. Tiny homes use up less land, require less electricity, generate fewer emissions, and require less building materials. They also force residents to downsize, often encouraging a minimalist lifestyle where owners only buy things they truly need.

According to Virginia Tech PhD Candidate Maria Saxton, who studied the environmental impact of living in tiny homes, people’s energy consumption typically goes down by about 45 percent when they move into a tiny home, as Curbed reported.

Saxton also found that tiny home owners were more likely to grow their own crops, buy less, recycle more, and produce less garbage — all things that can lower one’s environmental impact.

In addition, tiny homes often result in significant cost savings, as well as reduced time cleaning and maintaining the home and property.

11 Best Tiny Houses With Genius Floorplans (Videos & Pics)

' src=

Over the last years, we have interviewed and filmed a ton of tiny houses. Houses on wheels primarily.

Some of our home tours have gotten over 1 million views on Youtube, and if you have looked on Youtube for “Tiny Houses” you will have seen some of our home tours.

In this post, we have gathered the very best of the best. We hope you will enjoy it as much we enjoyed visiting all these wonderful people in their amazing tiny homes!

Table of Contents

We’d like to thank each and every one of these amazing people for letting us film their homes. We are very thankful for the opportunity to share all these great tiny spaces with our readers!

Before We Start…

We have something you need to see if you are in the process of finding out whether a tiny house is something for you.

We put together a list of the best furniture ideas for tiny houses and homes. It’s solutions like these that makes people realize that they could actually make it work inside a small space.

[su_box title=”Tip”]Check our list of the best tiny house furniture that should undoubtedly inspire you to see how it’s possible to get all you need in a small space! There are 23 ideas to get your creative juice flowing[/su_box]

Let’s dive in!

Tiny House by Chattanooga

We had the pleasure of filming one of the fine tiny houses from Chattanooga   last winter.

They do a really good job and they are also very popular. The houses are built kinda like a 5th wheeler with a gooseneck mount for a truck. And you need a good truck to two this bad boy.

We also took a bunch of pictures from inside the house.

Let’s start with some of the pictures.

where to tour tiny homes

The inside is very spacy and the kitchen area takes up a lot of the space. This makes perfect sense as many tiny house people love to cook. (Trust me, I’ve interviewed a lot of them 🙂

where to tour tiny homes

See more pictures of the Chattanooga tiny house here .

We love how this house is very open, white, and just overall spacey. There are many different ways to configure the house. You can seal off the bedroom area above the toilet among other things.

Here’s the video home-tour we did of the house:

Modern Tiny House from Denmark

This tiny house is actually built and designed 30 min from where we live! We live in Denmark and last year one of our friends called us to let us know that we needed to go to “Odder” – a small village outside Aarhus (Denmark’s 2nd largest city) where we live.

And we were NOT disappointed when we went to see that little cute house!

Man, these guys did a great job with the design and floorplan of this house. It’s just different than what you normally see and definitely has that Northern/Scandinavian minimalistic and modern feel to it.

Here’s a shot from the outside.

Tiny house from denmark from the outside

The dark panels and the staircase really make this house stand out. We really like the mix of dark and light colors here.

staircase and kitchen area

Here’s the interior design of the house. The layout is very unique and it really makes sense when you study the floor plan.

There’s plenty of space upstairs and the open space in the middle is great when you need that little extra space.

The space above the bathroom/toilet can be used for watching TV. Notice the dining table as well as the cute and stylish windows.

Maria really enjoyed filming this Tiny house. It was really fun to actually film a Danish tiny house (As we are Danish), But it was also very different from many of the other designs we have seen so far.

Here’s the video home-tour we did of the house last year:

The floorplan (as well as the images) are from their website (in Danish, but there’s a translate button at the lower right corner).

Interior plans and layout of the floorplan

Bear’s tiny homes

Mark from Bear’s tiny homes   is another really great guy we had the pleasure of meeting last year. He showed us around in his really cool tiny house. Lot’s of great features here as well.

The front porch can slide completely in under the house to make it easier to transport. The house is 24 feet (7,3 meter) long and 207 sq.ft. (19 M2).

It’s a very nice house with cozy cabin-style wooden walls and surfaces.

bears tiny house from the outside

Here you really get the feeling that you are inside a nice warm cabin in the woods. A very cozy and open space that instantly inspires you to relax and take it easy.

The simple metal lamp in the center of the house is a great touch as well. A very unique house and not like anything else we have seen.

Bears tiny homes wooden ceiling

The wood finish is consistent throughout the house.

Of course, you can tell from the pictures but the house had a really nice smell to it. You kind of felt like being in the middle of the f orest. One of the very nice features of this house is how they have placed the master bedroom downstairs.

So many tiny houses would have you sleep upstairs but not everybody can climb the ladder. Especially for elder people, this layout is really great.

Here’s the home tour we filmed with Mark inside the house:

Tiny house with a big porch

The next house we filmed a few weeks before the one above.

We stayed in it for two nights to really get the feel of it and we loved every second of it!

It’s a really nice layout for a super tiny house. You basically just have the kitchen and living area downstairs and then you climb the stairs and enter the sleeping loft. I LOVED sleeping in this cute little home.

Being able to wake up in the middle of nature and just open the window and enjoy your little sleeping loft was a great experience.

Here’s a picture of the house from the side. It has wheels below the little front porch and can be towed.

cozy tiny house in nature side

This is the entrance on the left (behind the cap) where you enter directly into the kitchen/living room area.

We love the white and modern feel of this house. Many American designs are more traditional and covered with darker wood and paint, which can be super-cozy as well. But for a house this tiny we typically prefer very light colors on the walls.

where to tour tiny homes

Upstairs you have the sleeping loft which is very tiny.

You can easily sleep up there but you have to bend your neck to get up there as you will see in the video below. We had a little trouble getting up there but we are also both pretty tall.

It’s one of the smallest floor plans we have seen, for a house that didn’t feel too small or claustrophobic (at all).

I think another reason for this is how they have placed the windows. We got a lot of daylight into the main living area.

As we said, we stayed in this tiny house for two nights and it was a great experience.

We loved everything about it and we could easily live in a house like this if we didn’t have kids (luckily we have Max).

And here is a drawing of the layout.

Titan tiny homes

We met Bob from Titan Tiny Homes in Florida last year and he was also kind enough to let us film his amazing tiny house.

It’s a 28 feet (8,5 meter) model and it was brand new when we filmed it. Another really great layout and some really nice and clean white lines along the walls and ceiling.

It has 256 sq.ft. (24 m2) on the ground floor and it has 150 sq.ft. (14 m2) upstairs.

titan tiny homes from the outside

Here’s the kitchen area with glitter on the wall. Pretty cool.

They did a really great job on mixing black and white into the space to create some masculinity and style.

It also has a full burner stow and a ton of cabinet space. So storage is not going to be a problem.

Bob from titan tiny homes

The loft is spacious and you have a great view over the house from here. Bob also put some nice lamps on the wall between the windows which are really cozy during night time.

It has a California King mattress upstairs with a really nice sleeping arrangement. There’s also space for another TV around the bed or you can choose to have extra storage for clothes or stuff.

where to tour tiny homes

In the video, you get an explanation of why the doors are placed on the side in the back of the house.

It makes room for a much larger living area and when you add the high ceiling you get a very open and nice tiny house. It just doesn’t feel small or squeezed in any way. Great job!

The second sleeping loft above the toilet can also be used for storage. So you don’t have to sell everything or do any extreme downsizing to be able to live in this space.

“The Abbot” by Cornerstone Tiny homes

The next one is one of our favorites. Maybe because Brett was such a great guy. We love the color of this house as well.

This is a 27-foot (8 meters) model with a 12-foot (3,5 meter) front porch

Blue is such a great color for the exterior of a tiny house if you ask us.

The little round window is a cute detail and we also fell for the big window and the Murphy bed !

I can’t believe more people put a Murphy bed in their tiny house. We honestly haven’t seen it before and we have filmed a ton of these houses!

cornerstone house from outside

Here’s a shot from the inside of the house.

Very spacious and light. It didn’t really feel like a tiny house when we are sitting there. It felt more like a regular living room And I think the reason would be the amount of daylight coming into the living area through the big windows.

I love how they have these huge windows to let the daylight into the living space.

And here’s a little shot of the Murphy bed. But you can’t really catch this on a photo. Watch the video below instead.

Brett shows the Murphy bed around the 4:50 mark.

Tiny house with murphy bed

The (downstairs) bedroom has a barn-door-style door to close it off. When the Murphy bed is down you can phone got a little writing desk. And inside the Murphy bed they have put in lighting and an electrical outlet so you can charge your phone at night.

This next house is very different from the other tiny houses we have visited. It’s located centrally in the city in a garden.

Dutch tiny garden pod

We filmed this cute little garden pod in The Netherlands. The owner was kind enough to show us around after we talked to the architect behind the project.

It’s working as an office space but it has everything you need to live in it: A kitchen( ette ), sleeping sofa, and a toilet.

The house is 280 sq.ft. (26 m2) and it has some very unique features like the top window section (easiest to see in the video below) and some beautiful wooden panels outside the huge windows.

garden pod from outside view

Inside the house, they have built-in bookshelves all the way at one of the sides. It looks great and they have a special-made ladder that attaches to the shelving units so it’s fixed.

A very nice twist!

I think this is a little too much with all the stuff but it is used as an office So the owner chose to have a lot of books and work material close by. Here’s a shot that was taken from the entrance of the house.

You have the little kitchenette to the left and the door in the middle leads to the bathroom, which you can see in the video below (along with the rest of the house).

The best detail is the loft windows. They are angled so the light enters most of the day (explained in the video below).

inside garden pod shelving

This little garden pod was really a gem.

Hidden in a city-garden it had everything you need to live in it full-time, even though the owner uses it as an office at the moment.

The next house is another tiny house on wheels.

“Skylight” from Free Range Homes

This is also a very nice tiny house. We love the layout of this one. It’s 24 feet (7,3 meter) long.

We also filmed this house last year and it’s so unique and well done that we had to include it in this post.

They actually put a tub inside this house, but that was hard to catch with the camera lens so you will have to check the video below to see that .

tiny house form outside view

Here’s Maria sitting on the sleeping loft.

Notice how natural and light everything seems. It was a pleasure being up there and it didn’t feel small at all, probably because they have given everything a light finish.

Again, that’s really something we recommend people do with the tiny homes. It just makes it feel bigger!

Maria sitting on the loft

The dining area (right next to the entrance on the left) is also super spacious. You can easily sit 8 persons here when you add chairs around the table.

The table can be separated into two parts and placed along the wall to the left (besides the entrance). You can see that motion in action in the video below.

A REALLY neat detail that we really loved!

And of course, there’s plenty of storage built-into the seats. You can lift up the seat of the bench and have a ton of stuff down there.

dining area inside the house

Just as a lot of the other tiny houses this house had a full-size fridge and a four-burner stove.

So you don’t have to compromise on the kitchen space and interior. For most of the houses, we have seen people really like to cook. So it’s important to have what you need to cook a good meal.

“A New Beginning” tiny home (one of our absolute favorites!)

We had the pleasure of filming Adam Lehman’s home-built tiny house at the Tiny House Festival north of Colorado last year. He actually built everything here himself and he did an amazing job!

The house is 270 sq.ft. (25 m2) and we were impressed by how much storage and space it had. You can read more about it on this Facebook page .

The tiny windows at the top is a really nice feature that adds so much atmosphere to this design!

Tiny home from outside

Here’s the view from the entrance and up towards the sleeping loft. The loft is super spacious because the ceiling is extra high.

The contrast between the white and dark wood is great and really gives this house that extra atmosphere.

The dark colors on the inside are the same color as the darker wood on the exterior. Just a cool details we didn’t notice at first.

The table can fold down and make more floor space in the house. A great feature. We also love the little kitchen area and the sofa below the big window. There’s a lot of light in this house with all these windows. There are more than 13 windows as we start counting!

This is a picture taken from the sleeping loft toward the entrance of the house.

where to tour tiny homes

You should absolutely watch this video we filmed inside and outside the house last year. There is so many great details we cannot capture on a photo. We explain it all in the video.

Danish tiny home with huge porch

We had the pleasure of visiting Karen Jelnes in her tiny home in our hometown Aarhus. She showed us around her summer home which she built with her husband. They are both architects and as soon as you see the house you can feel the love and passion they threw into this project.

It’s only 236 sq.ft. (22 m2) and they live here with their two kids during the summer period.

From the outside, you can enter the house through the kitchen which is the main part of the house.

The exterior of the house

The glass-doors can slide open to include the huge front porch as part of the living area.

The porch is a good place to eat and be outside even when it rains.

The kitchen is split into two parts: one indoor part and another outdoor part. A fun way to include the outdoor space in the daily life of a family.

Here’s Karen in the indoor part of the kitchen. You can look directly out into the garden area and you really feel connected to nature when you standing here with the glass-doors aside.

The outdoor part of the kitchen is made with the same wood finish as the exterior of the house. Very nice detail.

Inside the small kitchen which is opened up

There’s much more to this house but we didn’t get any good pictures from the rest of the house. So be sure to watch the video below to see how they manage to fit two children in a pretty small bedroom.

Small brick house in San Francisco (160 sq.ft.)

This small house in San Francisco is totally it’s own.

It was originally a laundry boiler room and now serves as a guest apartment. It has a full-size kitchen and a living room.

small-house

It’s squeezed in between other buildings, and the cute factor is high!

The toilet is in the mezzanine section

When you climb up the stairs, you first reach the mezzanine section, where you find the tiny toilet and drawers with space for clothes and belongings.

It’s small, but above the entrance the architects placed a skylight, to lighten up the area.

When you climb the last stairs you get to the sleeping loft. Besides the bed there’s a small window, which is a very nice touch:

bed

The apartment is very clean and simple – not for everyone, but for the city dwellers with a taste for simplicity it can be the perfect spot. The kitchen is big enough to actually cook, and there’s extra table space under the stairway.

Here you can see how the rooms are divided.

You have to like cooking if you were to live in this space full time, as it takes up most of the ground floor.

floorplan

The entrance door is big, and the glass sections let in a lot of light.

The architect placed the upper floor on top of the brick-part, and I would personally have kept the brick-style all the way up, but it does fit in well with the surrounding buildings.

Prototype apartment from New York

This is a test apartment from New York City, showing some cool furniture designs.

We especially love how the flatscreen slides out in front of the left side  murphy bed , to transform the room for a movie night.

transforming-apartment

The Murphy bed to the left might only be used as a guest bed though, because I don’t think you would sleep this close permanently in a “real apartment” space. So it could probably be replaced by a mattress.

The Murphy bed couch is always a great touch, and a really good idea for a studio apartment, where you only have one room.

You NEED to see this as well..

We have written a really good article with 35 great ideas on how to get the most out of a studio apartment .

Converted grain silo

When Christoph Kaiser spotted a flat-pack grain silo from the 1950s for sale on Craigslist, he thought his storage problems were over. But a quick Google search for similar projects led him down an entirely different path.

With a whole lot of hard work and a budget of around £78,800 ($100k), Christoph created a truly genius tiny home that perfectly suits his lifestyle.

<p>With a background in residential design, Christoph meticulously planned every inch of the silo’s 26-foot-high frame. He wanted the interior to reflect the elegant curves of the silo’s shell, which meant designing and building bespoke cabinetry and furniture that would hug the walls.</p> <p>He even constructed the home's ultra-cool sliding door himself, using a material usually reserved for greenhouses, Polygal. As he was: Harry Styles superfans flock to his tiny hometown's walking tour

HOLMES CHAPEL, England — Customers come from around the world to Simon Wakefield’s bakery in this village in northern England — and not just to sample his quality sausage rolls.

“We get lots and lots of fans,” he says, referring not only to W. Mandeville’s tasty product but also a notable ex-employee: Holmes Chapel’s most famous son and global pop megastar Harry Styles .

“People come in from all over the world ,” the fourth-generation baker says as groups of young tourists crowd into the bakery to take selfies and buy pastries. “All over the U.K., but then Brazil, the U.S., Australia, Japan, everywhere.”

A poster of Harry Styles inside the W. Mandeville bakery in Holmes Chapel, northern England, where the pop star once worked.

W. Mandeville is one of the stops lining the Harry Styles walking tour that began operating earlier this month in the singer’s hometown, which is about 20 miles from the northwestern city of Manchester. A local not-for-profit set up the tour after growing numbers of fans have flocked there in recent years, with all proceeds going into a fund for the village.

The superfans, known as “Harries,” are led to the Twemlow viaduct — residents say Harry had his first kiss there — which is covered in colorful messages to Harry and has even spawned its own hashtag. They’re also taken through the village, where many line up at Wakefield’s craft bakery to pose for photos with a poster of the former One Direction member as a teenager wearing an apron. Styles mentioned his Saturday job in his breakthrough interview on Britain’s talent show “The X Factor.”

Harry Styles

At the Holmes Chapel train station, a life-size cardboard cutout of the “As It Was” singer greets fans, who can sign a message to their idol in a notebook. Those notebooks are later delivered to the star by his dad, Desmond, who lives locally.

Station manager Graham Blake, 62, explains that Styles’ father gave the last five books of fan messages to his son as a birthday present. “He said, ‘He’s got everything,’ and people have put down these stories from the heart. He said, ‘I’m going to wrap it up in a big red bow … because he does love his fans,’” Blake said of Desmond.

Fans on a guided tour of Harry Styles' hometown approach Twemlow viaduct in Holmes Chapel, northern England, where it is claimed he had his first kiss.

On the first day of the tour, a dozen devoted Directioners follow their guides through the village and out through the lush green countryside. Styles superfan Suzanne Tinsley shows her fellow walkers the lyrics she has tattooed on her arms, including “ Treat People With Kindness ,” her favorite song.

“Harry Styles has got me through a lot, he means the world to me,” Tinsley explains. “I know people say ‘It’s just a pop star,’ but when I feel like I can’t get through the day, I just listen to Harry and he makes me feel better,” she said. “He makes me smile.”

Messages are inscribed on the walls of the Twemlow viaduct near Harry Styles' hometown.

The walking tour runs weekly throughout the summer, with tickets priced at 20 British pounds, or roughly $25. Organizers say that demand has driven them to add additional weekend tours due to Taylor Swift fans in the area taking a detour during the U . K . leg of her tour . Swift and Styles dated between 2012 and 2013 and Harry even brought her home to see Holmes Chapel.

Styles also returned in 2013 to film a documentary about his life, “and ever since then, people have watched the documentary and thought, ‘I want to see where this superstar grew up,’” explains 16-year-old Ben McCormick, one of the tour’s guides. “So people are coming, they’re spending money in local businesses, they’re interacting with all the people in the village,” he added. “It’s created a really positive environment that all of us here can get involved with.”

We have talked about moving into a larger home many times through the years, but I honestly love our home and the coziness it provides. I think living in a small home has made our family stay close. Let's start in the living room, shall we? This is what you see when you first walk into our home. As you can see, I love whites and blues. I guess if I had to describe my style, it would be thrifted, cottage style...with tons of plants. I have plants EVERYWHERE in our home...a little known fact about me, when I was little, I wanted to be a botanist. I once turned the back room in our home into my laboratory. I dug up every flower, plant and weed I could find and planted them in cups and bowls so I could study them. Needless to say, that didn't pan out, but I still have a strong love for plants.

A few little details about our living room...that huge chalkboard above the mantel used to be a mirror on a dresser. I just painted it and it's been there for a few years now. You can find the tutorial HERE ! The TV console is actually a shelf from Target.

The plant behind my husband's leather chair (which I try to camouflage with a blanket), is a Fiddle Leaf Fig  plant. If you ever read Better Homes and Gardens, then you have probably seen one. I am absolutely in love with them, and have two. The shelf beside the couch is an old whiskey display that my father-in-law brought me a few years ago. I painted it white, and it is one of my favorite pieces in our home. Most of the furniture pieces in our home started out dark or in bad shape, and I have painted them with Chalky Finish Paint . I love chalk based paint...it adheres to furniture with no sanding and really sticks. A little goes along way, so you don't have to spend a ton of money to change the look of a piece of furniture.

I just got these faux paperwhites in the mail yesterday! They are from Magnolia Market (you know, Joanna Gaines shop from the HGTV show, Fixer Upper). They really make it feel like spring!

Our living room leads into our dining area, which is right off of our kitchen. That grey cabinet that you see on the left used to be a cherry wood and glass curio cabinet. I painted it glass and all with Chalky Finish Paint in Relic a few weeks ago so I could store my crockpot, pressure cooker and other kitchen gadgets in there without having to look at them.

There are two more pieces from Magnolia Market in our dining area too. My husband bought me the "Today is a good day for a good day" metal sign for Christmas, and I bought myself the amazing Farmhouse Serving Plank that you see in the middle of our table. I use it to serve dinner on in the evenings, and it's great to use when we have guests over as the world's largest cheeseboard.

This is the view from the living room that shows how our dining space, kitchen and breakfast nook/office are all connected. This is where I spend most of my time. I created a kitchen island using a sideboard that I found at Wayfair. It houses my cookbooks, some fun dishes, our indoor grill and is where I do all of my meal prep when cooking dinner. Since we are super limited on cabinet space, I added hooks to each side to hold my colanders and strainers.

I removed some of our cabinet doors so I could see my dishes. Our kitchen cabinets were originally cherry, and in really rought shape, so I painted them using chalky paint too. The backsplash is actually peel-and-stick faux wood flooring planks that look a lot like our wood floors. I wanted a rustic look, but nothing too permanent. This is the second time I've used this product for a backsplash, and I love it. You can see the tutorial I shares showing how to use them as a backsplash HERE ! It's by far one of my most popular posts!

This is where the business of blogging happens. I LOVE all things aqua, and white of course, so this is my favorite space...it inspires lots of creativity. It can see our patio and back yard from here, and the windows let in a ton of light. And of course...I have plants everywhere! Those hanging planters are from IKEA. I saw them in one of their commercials and had to have them. You can even see the cat food bowl tucked in beside my smaller Fiddle Leaf Fig plant. Just keepin' it real here.

So, that's a quick tour of our little home. You can find our Blue and White Bedroom HERE and our Back Patio HERE !

WOW....loved the tour of your home. Your place looks soooooo fresh and inviting. You are SO CREATIVE. Will be trying the "chalky Paint" on some of my stuff. I have never heard of it before. Who makes it....etc.

Hi, Mickie! Thank you so much for the kind words! The chalky finish paint is made by DecoArt. I use it on EVERYTHING. I've painted tables, shelves, the curio cabinet (including the glass), mirrors, my kitchen cabinets, two of our bathroom cabinets and a few dining chairs. It is amazing! You need to finish it off with DecoArt's Creme Wax to pull out the color and really protect it. Hope this helps! ~Jess

I loved taking the tour of your small house. I also have a small house and have come up with some ideas for storaage, etc., etc., etc. My colors are different, but, still make my rooms look larger.

I love the faux wood backsplash - I would have never thought of that! I think it would even be a good idea as a backdrop for food photo shots.

So crisp, fresh and clean! Great job! Love everything. Now it is time to enjoy the fruits of your labor with your family and friends.

Where did you find the white curtains hanging in your blogging space? I LOVE them. You have a beautiful home. I went from a 1,400 sq ft house to a 2,600 sq ft house thinking we "needed more space." We didn't like it; it was terrible to keep clean and we seemed so far away from each other in the same house. We downsized back to an 1,800 sq foot home and I am so happy we did. It is cozier and we seem closer as a family again. It's so weird how the size of a house can do that. Love the home tours!

Hi, Miranda! I bought them at Target! You know, it's funny, we have tons of friends that live in huge homes and they have encouraged us to move "up" as well. When we take a step back, we see the disconnect in some of their families. I feel like everybody just goes off to their own space and you really lose the family closeness. Thanks so much for stopping by!!!

Thanks do much for sharing your home! I, too live in a small space...400 square feet to be exact! I love to decorate and have a blue, white, soft turquoise color scheme. Love your grey, too. I've never used the chalky paint but will try it soon. I'm refinishing my cabinets and kitchen arrangement at the moment...have you ever painted your countertops? I have laminate but would love to have the look of marble or granite. Ideas?

I have painted my countertops in the past. We recently had new ones installed after saving up for them. There are tons of countertop paint kits that work really well. I love the one Rustoleum has as Lowe's.

I adore your home! I want to be a landscape architect so I love plants too :) Thank you so much for playing along and being a part of the tour!

Jessica! I love your home! Your office is in the perfect spot! I adore the pop of color! It is great to be on this tour with you!

So pretty and not so perfect that min doesn't instantly wonder what my kid will break. I envy your deeper desk. My goal is to so more of my desk and less electronics very soon. I have this annoying Ooma phone and a ELEPHANT sized black printer taking up my Zen-space. Thanks for opening up your home to all the snoopers in the world including myself.

HI Jessica.

Love the updated backsplash and it is exactly the look I am going for in my bathroom. It looks wonderful in your kitchen. I was wondering if you can share with us the painting technique and colors that you used on the updated kitchen backsplash. I am so anxious to get this project going.

Thanks for sharing.

Would you mind telling people where the updated wood planks are from? It isn't mentioned anywhere in this post.

Hi Jessica.. I'm a 68 year old grandma, living a real small budget. Can't afford anyone to remodel my tiny kitchen. Do have a DYI counter top suggestion? It has to be something I do myself.. Help please.

I love the vinyl backsplash idea so much! I saw it on Pinterest and Remodelaholic and just posted a blog about how I wanted to tackle it this weekend for my bathroom! I was thinking about trying to get a white washed look but not sure if I can achieve that on vinyl? But I also love your updated version and the color you used! Now I'm even more excited to attempt this! Curious how your chalk paint is holding up in your kitchen? I've been contemplating it but read different reviews.

Hi, Valerie! The chalk paint really held up. The key is to make sure you either wax it at the end or add a coat or two of polyurethane. Hope this helps! xoxo Jess

I love your casita!!!!!! Did you use the planks behind the stove too? I’m afraid it will melt.

For the peel and stick flooring used as the kitchen backsplash, how hard was it to remove them when you wanted to replace them? Did it do much damage to the wall?

They were really easy to remove, and other than pulling a little paint off, there wasn't much damage at all. I changed it out to a different peel and stick last year and it was pretty easy.

Love your back splash! I'm curious about the house you have your bananas and canisters in. Is it glass or just open? Where did you find that?

Thanks, Anne! It's a terrarium that I bought at IKEA years ago. I took out the side panels at one point and used it to house my canisters and bananas.

I based my whole kitchen remodel off that yellow, gray, tourquise fabric at our old house because of your kitchen, lol
