It all began 20 years ago in a home garage in Ljubljana...
...the capital of Slovenia, with two motorcycles and three enthusiastic individuals: Matej and Martina Malovrh, along with their good friend, Blaz Zganjar, all of whom are still deeply involved in running the company. Matej had a vision of attracting foreign riders to our neck of the woods, and Blaz and Martina joined him in pursuit of that vision. At that time, very few foreigners knew where Slovenia was, yet we succeeded in attracting a few enthusiastic riders from overseas within the first year. Our primary marketing tool was a $50 USD webpage.
SMTours (short for Slovenia Moto Tours) is born. The initial idea was to organize tours in Slovenia only. Matej and Blaลพ bought two BMWs, F650GS and R1200GS. The first guided tour of Slovenia and Croatia welcomed three guests from Florida (Thank you Hank, Larry, and Liliana), with a friend's black Kia Sephia with red mirrors and a sporty spoiler serving as the support vehicle on the tour.

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is where it all started 20 years ago and remains the base of all AMT operations today.
Inspired and satisfied with the 1st season, we set up five different guided tours going to Bosnia for the first time. The company added BMW RT and Yamaha TDM to the fleet for more variety. A real breakthrough was three groups of riders from the States joining our tours. They have all been our loyal clients for many, many, many years, and some of them still are, serving as our big promoters (Thank you, Alan Singer, Bill & Valerie Robinson, Thomas Knox, Tom Sullivan, and many more).
This was also the year when Martina and Matej got married and went to the States for their honeymoon and visited many AMT clients on the way.

Our fleet welcomes our first support van, an Opel Vivaro, alongside a diverse array of motorcycle brands including BMW, Hondas, Suzukis, Kawasakis, and Yamahas. The number of guests grows rapidly as we expand our tours to Montenegro, birthing our legendary Beautiful Balkans Adventure. Simultaneously, the iconic 'Don't be a chicken, ride Slovenia!' T-shirt is introduced. Additionally, this marked our debut attendance at the BMW MOA Rally and the publication of our inaugural brochure.

With more tours on the road, there were more encounters with the police. Fortunately, they were mostly nice encounters.
Keeping the spirits up even in rainy weather.
The company gets a new name - Adriatic Moto Tours. Changing the name was one of the best decisions. We extend our tours to Central Europe, adding our 15-day Czech-Hungary tour to our repertoire, where we combined European historical places and riding for the first time. The tour became very popular.
We start running the tours under Adriatic Moto Tours brand name.

These were the years when the company was evolving, diligently enhancing its expertise, honing its strengths, and refining its tours and services. In 2008, we introduced Tour Booklets and GPS devices, significantly elevating the quality of our tours. The team expanded. Until this point, Matej, Martina, and Blaลพ had managed all tours and office operations.
We significantly broadened our tour offerings by expanding into the Balkans, incorporating Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Greece. Additionally, we debuted our first Italian tour, named Tuscany Sardinia Corsica, which greatly bolstered the popularity of our tours. Finally, we upgraded our beginner's $50 website to a more sophisticated platform.
Not only did the AMT family grow, but so did Matej's and Martina's, who welcomed their daughter in 2008.
We introduced and prepared Extensive Tour Booklets for each tour to ensure our guests receive the best possible experience.
In 2008, we introduced GPS rental for riders at a rate of 10 EUR per day.
Nevertheless, those were still the days when maps were relied upon, as GPS navigators were just emerging.
The team expanded with the addition of another guide Rozle.

First bike delivery to Venice was made by a hired truck.
The development and recognition of our company were enhanced by the creation of a new and more sophisticated website.
The home garage and office finally became too small with almost 60 bikes in the fleet and more people getting involved. We bought new business premises in Ljubljana. This was a significant investment and a major step forward.
Introducing our Romania to Istanbul adventure earned us the title of true connoisseurs of the Balkans, as we traversed virtually the entire region. The business soared to a new level, serving nearly 500 clients annually, while Martina, Blaลพ, and Matej welcomed reinforcements in the office, garage, and guiding team.
We began attending the Ulysses AGM in Australia annually which led to a significant increase in the number of Australians joining our tours.

Wow, we made it to 10 years! This was a significant milestone and confirmation that we were on the right track. By this time, we had established ourselves as a well-known tour operator, recognized as the expert for the Balkans. Being the first company to initiate tours in the Balkans back in 2004, we had become acquainted with all the best roads and destinations over the course of 10 years of operation.
Despite our profound affection for the Balkans, we ventured into the Alps for the first time and introduced two legendary tours: Top of the Alps and Alps Deluxe & French Riviera.
Well done! Ten years of organizing tours and continuously improving :-)

These were the years of tremendous growth: our business flourished, word of mouth spread rapidly, cementing our reputation within the touring industry. Our fleet expanded each season.
In 2019, marking our 15th anniversary, we achieved record-breaking success. With approximately 160 motorcycles in the garage, over 900 clients, and more than 60 tours under our belt, it was truly a milestone year.
The AMT family experienced significant expansion as well. Our office staff expanded, more guys joined the garage team, and the number of guides exceeded 20. These were undoubtedly the golden years, with the world seemingly at our fingertips. We even ventured beyond Europe to organize tours in Thailand and Laos.

The sudden onset of Covid-19 pandemic brought tourism to a standstill, prompting the implementation of a free cancellation policy due to widespread tour and rental cancellations. In 2020, our turnover plummeted to zero. We launched the parallel Adriatic Convertible Tours early in the year, but the pandemic abruptly halted its progress.
Fortunately, by late summer 2021, there was a glimmer of improvement, allowing us to conduct a few tours before facing another setback in October. Nonetheless, we were grateful to resume operations.

These two seasons marked our return to form, allowing us to restart our tours on a full schedule. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing. Despite being understaffed in 2022, we remained highly motivated to regain our momentum, and indeed, we succeeded. We onboarded new office staff, trained new guides, and fortunately managed to retain lots of our experienced guides.
While 2022 started off somewhat slow, it was still a solid year, especially considering the uncertain and unstable spring months. However, 2023 proved to be exceptional, carrying forward the momentum from our best year, 2019.

4SC2404 - Adriatic Rollercoaster Extreme!
We began our journey in Klagenfurt, heading south over the winding Loibl Pass into Slovenia. After about an hour, we crossed the border and continued our ride. Late in the morning, we arrived at the Postojna Caves, an impressive limestone cave system that is among the largest and most famous in Europe. We took a small train deep into the cave and explored the stunning stalactites and stalagmites on a guided tour. After this visit, we hit the road again. Our route led us through the Slovenian countryside, past dense forests and small villages. The roads were sometimes narrow and winding, which made the ride particularly exciting. In the afternoon, we crossed the border into Croatia and eventually reached our destination for the day: the medieval town of Motovun, perched on a hill in the green landscape of Istria. The region is known for its truffle forests, and the view from Motovun over the surrounding hills was a perfect ending to our first day on the road.
We started our second day by riding from Motovun to Brestova. From there, a relaxed 20-minute ferry ride took us to the island of Cres. On Cres, we explored the town and enjoyed its pleasant beachfront promenade. While some of the group took the opportunity for a refreshing dip in the sea, others cooled off with a delicious ice cream. After our time in Cres, we continued to the next ferry, heading to the island of Krk. Once on Krk, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch with views of the marina and promenade, savoring freshly grilled fish among other delights. In the afternoon, we returned to the mainland via the impressive Krk Bridge and made our way back to Motovun. The day offered a perfect blend of relaxation, culinary pleasures, and scenic views, adding to the richness of our journey.
On our third day, we first made our way quickly through the busy region around Rijeka to reach the impressive Jadranska Magistrala. This coastal road is a real highlight for motorcyclists, with its many bends and breathtaking views of the mountains, cliffs and Adriatic coast. We enjoyed lunch right by the sea, which some of us combined with a refreshing dip in the Adriatic. The Jadranska Magistrala offered us fantastic driving moments and an impressive view. The last photo stop gave us a view of the maritime surroundings before we continued inland over the Velebit Mountains. An exciting mixture of long, fast bends and tight hairpin bends - exactly what makes a biker's heart beat faster. On this day, we experienced the diversity of Croatia, from the Mediterranean coastal landscape to rugged mountain regions and dense forests, which also impressively reflected the entire tour. After a final coffee stop, we drove past the Plitvice Lakes (more on this tomorrow) to our extremely pleasant hotel, which provided the perfect end to an eventful day.
After three intensive days of driving, we allowed ourselves a break today - at least partially. The morning was free for everyone to do as they pleased, so the group split up. Some were drawn to the Plitvice Lakes, where turquoise waters, picturesque waterfalls and a boat trip across the largest lake provided unforgettable impressions. Others could not resist the temptation and spontaneously set off on a short motorcycle tour, exploring the Croatian hinterland and enjoying the freedom of the road. Others used the time to relax in the hotel, where the pool and spa provided relaxation. In the afternoon we got together again, because of course we wanted to collect kilometers and explore new countries on our extreme tour. So our route took us to Bosnia-Herzegovina, where we startet a fantastic loop through the Bosnian and Croatian hinterland. In just one week, we had already experienced four countries - further proof of how varied this fantastic tour is. Back near our hotel, we still hadn't had enough. We fortified ourselves with espresso, refreshed ourselves with water and got our fuel ready to go. And off we went to the next round. We really put our bikes to the test on a section of yesterday's route and covered as many kilometers in one afternoon as some people don't even ride on a day tour. But on an extreme tour, this is of course possible :)
We start our day trip in the Plitvice Lakes National Park on narrow but well-paved roads. It's a leisurely start to the day, although the tightly winding bends demand our full attention. After leaving the national park, the route takes us through numerous small villages and towns whose facades still bear the scars of the Balkan War. Ruins and bullet holes remind us of their past. As extensive building work/renovations are taking place in the old town of Karlovac, we only make a short stop here before continuing on to ลฝumberak National Park. For a long time, we drive along the Croatian-Slovenian border, where the roads are very narrow and often in poor condition. A high level of concentration and precise driving lines are required. But the effort is rewarded with a fantastic view of the surrounding hilly landscape. When we reach the end of the national park, our stomachs are rumbling. An idyllic restaurant in the middle of the forest makes it almost difficult to get back on the bikes after a good meal, and the ride becomes more relaxed after the Slovenian border. Well-maintained country roads with long bends lead us to our destination hotel near Novo Mesto.

How to Motorcycle to Manang, Nepal
This guide explains everything you need to know about riding a motorcycle to Manang, Nepal. If you’re planning a ride into the heart of the legendary Nepalese Annapurna mountain range, start here…
Motorcycle Guide: Manang Nepal
By Maddi and Oli (Tilly2Wheels)
Round the world motorcycle travellers
Welcome to Manang
Known for its incredible natural beauty, rich culture and spectacular views, Manang is set high on the north of the Annapurna mountain range. This 99km long road to Manang remains mostly unpaved, and therefore untouched by tourists due to its challenging accessibility. And thatโs exactly where the beauty lies, a road less travelled, endless and changing landscapes, little traffic, and all set amongst the mighty Himalayas. An adventurerโs dream…
Itโs unpaved roads and rugged landscapes gives you a real adventure and challenge. And after you conquer the mighty Manang, you’re rewarded with not just spectacular views of almost 8,000m giants surrounding you, but a beautiful ride into the valley of Manang, and incredible people and culture.
And this guide explains everything you need to know about how to ride there on your own motorcycle and have your own Manang adventure.
Route –ย This 99km journey starts from Besisahar, also known as the Gateway to the Himalayas; and finishes in Manang at 3,500m altitude. It is one way in and one way out, so after you conquer the this road you get to do it all again backwards!
Mileage –ย
- Kathmandu – Manang: 269km
- Pokhara to Manang: 200km
- The road to Manang, or the deadliest road to paradise, starts from Besisahar and is a 99km climb.ย
Days –ย Minimum 4 days (riding days only) return to either Kathmandu or Pokhara with the slow valley traffic and off-roading
Time of year –ย The best time to visit Manang is Autumn from September to November, and Spring from March to May.
Permits –ย Permit required โ ACAP permit, more info below
Our ride to Manang
This guide explains what you need to know about riding a motorcycle to Manang. But if you’re interested in what happened on our mad ride there (including the first crash and mechanical breakdown of our entire round the world trip!) then have a read of our story here.ย

When to ride to Manangย
The best time to visit Manang is Autumn from September to November, and Spring from March to May. During these months, you can expect clear blue skies with temperatures ranging from 10-20ยฐC during the day but can drop to below freezing at night. Pack the thermals!ย
Highly recommend avoiding riding to this area during both winter and monsoon season due to poor inaccessibility with either heavy snow or landslides from the heavy rains.
Motorcycle choice
A low to mid-range cc adventure bike with off-road tyres. If you can, avoid a heavy load, lighter the better. We did manage to get our loaded Triumph Tiger 800 up but less weight would have been helpful on the steep inclines and may have saved our clutch plates.

Accommodation
There are plenty of accommodation options in Manang village itself. Colourful huts, guesthouses and small motels. No need to pre-book.ย If you need to stop on the road going up, thereโs plenty of village homestays and hotels available.
Manang is 3,519m high and you can expect to feel some symptoms of altitude sickness after climbing from 760m in Besisahar the same morning. Plenty of rest and hydration. Or a local remedy is raw garlic, chew on this and hopefully your symptoms subside like ours did. Not nice in the helmet though.ย
Things to see
If you are a hiker as well as a biker, there are plenty of hiking trails to suit all fitness levels with various durations. Some a short 20m stroll to 2 days or even 2 weeks. Tilicho Lake, Gangapurna lake or the mighty Annapurna Circuit to name a few.ย
Or if you prefer to sip on traditional milk tea and enjoy your homemade Nepalese momos while taking in the views, there is no shortage of places to eat or 8,000m high mountains and valleys to marvel at.
ATMs and money
There is one ATM in the Manang village however when we visited it was out of order. Recommend taking cash out in Besisahar to cover your accommodation, meals etc.
Finding fuel
Besisahar is the last town before Manang with a fuel station. Depending on your tank capacity, carry extra fuel. If you find yourself really stuck you can find bottles of fuel in some villages, you will just need to ask the locals and have a fuel filter handy just in case!ย
Permits for riding to Manangย
You will need the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit – as of June 2024, this will cost you 3,000 NPR per person.ย
This permit is not available online and must be purchased at the tourism information centre either in Kathmandu or Pokhara.ย
It is important to keep this permit with you to provide to each check point on the route. There are 4-5 checkpoints that you will need to check in and check out of with your passport and permit details. They do take this very seriously and there are hefty fines if you miss one. They are however easy to spot at the entrance of the villages and there is always a person waving you down to take your details.ย
Road conditions
Manang remains mostly untouched due to its challenging accessibility. As of June 2024, 80% of the route is off-road with small paved sections near the villages.ย
We recommend having off-road experience to tackle this route, it will make your ride much easier and more enjoyable! This road is jammed packed with adventure and will give you a nice challenge! You will experience water crossings, mud, large rocky sections, steep inclines with tight curves, gravel and narrow sections along sheer cliff drops that will make your head spin!
Riding gear
In the recommended months for Nepal (mentioned above) you’re generally looking at good weather, but it can get cold at altitude and you may get a sweat on when off-roading. Outside of those months you can expect cold and wet weather. So it’s a good idea to choose the right riding gear for the job and that generally means a layered system approach with a waterproof throwover that you can just chuck on if the heavens open, a compressible down jacket to wear under your riding gear if it gets cold and a breathable and vented riding jacket.ย

Aperol Spritz: A Favorite of the Masses, Literally
At any cafe across the globe, there’s a good chance you’ll spot someone sipping an Aperol Spritz. However, despite the cocktail’s universal appeal, you’re likely to do a double-take if you pass a church offering a free spritz to woo visitors to attend mass.
Such was the case in Urbino, Italy (in the Marche region) when a Franciscan Friar (now nicknamed Don Perignon) advertised a “2 for 1” Sunday evening offer of “ Messa & Apericena ” to attract more young churchgoers.
After evoking considerable controversy, Brother Antonio Ricatti and his bishop apologized, explaining that the poster wasn’t intended to offend. It was an effort to draw more young people to Italy’s increasingly empty churches. The ploy worked because the size of the congregation doubled.
That’s the power of a Spritz!
A Very Short History of the Spritz
In the 19th century, Austrian soldiers stationed in Italy found local wines less palatable than their beloved Rieslings. To enhance the flavor, they began adding a “spritz” (German for “spray”) of water to the Italian wines.
Over time, the recipe evolved, incorporating soda water and bitters. The resulting drink gained popularity in Italy and across cities worldwide. One key factor contributing to its widespread appeal was its relatively low alcohol content, making it an easy-to-drink cocktail.
According to a study reported by Forbes, the Aperol Spritz has emerged as a top choice among cocktail enthusiasts in the United States , claiming the number one position in 22 states.
Interestingly, the cocktail is more popular in states with warmer climates, like California, Florida, and Arizona. Additionally, states with significant Italian American populations, such as New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey, have embraced the Aperol Spritz as a favorite.
Furthermore, the Aperol Spritz ranks as the eighth most popular cocktail globally. Sales of Aperol have skyrocketed from 9,000 to 390,010 bottles between 2010 and 2022, reflecting its growing popularity.
Everyone Remembers Their Virginal Aperol Spritz
I sipped my first spritz at a bar near Piazza Santo Stefano in Bologna, Italy. This beautiful “square” (of irregular shape) is surrounded by seven churches, many of which are interconnected.
Light, bubbly, and a bit bitter, the bright orange drink was as pleasant and as easy to imbibe as a soft drink.
With my husband and friends, we lingered at our outdoor table and enjoyed lively banter before dinner, munching on olives, chips, and mini-paninis.
Many Italians, especially in northern Italy, congregate at bars and cafes in the evening (typically after 7 PM) to meet for an aperitivo.
The same term, aperitivo , refers both to the drinks consumed AND the social ritual of leisurely meeting for a drink, nibbles, and conversation. An apericena refers to the same social ritual but with more abundant food offerings.
An Italian friend told me that Italians rarely have work-related meetings over meals, so aperitivo is a perfect time to meet colleagues in a convivial, unpressured setting. An Italian aperitivo (often wine, vermouth , Campari and soda, an Americano, or a spritz cocktail) stimulates the appetite and “opens up” the stomach before dinner.
Recipe for A Basic Spritz
According to Spritz, Italy’s Most Iconic Aperitivo Cocktail, with Recipes (Ten Speed Press), a “bible of spritz,” the basic recipe for the cocktail today is as follows:
- Three parts Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine)
- Two parts bitter liqueur (like Aperol or Campari)
- 1 part soda
- With an orange or lemon slice or olive for garnish.
About the Spritz Book
This breezy little book, filled with rich historical and cultural information about the spritz, is a delightful read before or after a trip to Italy.
Perhaps late in life, when reading it, I learned that the term “cocktail” refers to any alcoholic drink with three or more ingredients.
The book includes beautiful art deco illustrations and graphics and recipes for 50 classic and modern spritz cocktails from top mixologists so readers can make this delightful tradition one of their own.
S pritz lovers will want to keep the book close at hand. The cocktails are perfect for holidays, special occasions, and spending time with friends.
