Garbett Point Trek – An exciting one day trek near Mumbai (INR 350)

What is Veganism ? It is a way of living which seeks to exclude all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for clothing, food or for any other purpose. The people who follow such way of living are called the Vegan . Abhi!! How come a travel post is related to Veganism? A couple of days ago, I was a bit lucky to do the Garbett Point Trek with a vegan mountain climber “ Kuntal Joisher ”.

Dhom Dam Garbett Point Trek

Who is Kuntal Joisher ? Kuntal is a vegan mountaineer and a software engineer based out of Mumbai who became the first human in the world to have ascended any 8000-meter mountain ( Mt. Lhotse ) living a 100% vegan lifestyle. He is also the first mountaineer to have climbed  Mount Everest  on a completely vegan diet. I met Kuntal on my way to Everest Base Camp in the year 2016 and since then I have been following him quite closely.

“I wanted to climb Mount Everest on a vegan diet or not at all.” – Kuntal Joisher

Oh! I may end up writing endlessly on the life of Kuntal. So, let’s first talk about the Garbett Point Trek . Situated about 5 kms from Matheran Railway Station , in the hidden hilly regions of Bhivpuri village in Diksal, Garbett point offers a panoramic view of the lush green Sahyadri mountain ranges nearby. Garbett point trek is a one-day adventure trek filled with untouched natural beauty and is a perfect option for those who are looking for a quick weekend gateway from the city of Mumbai/Pune.

This particular trek was organized free of cost to raise awareness and funds for  Sunsar Maya of which Kuntal is one of the Board of directors. Sunsar Maya is a non-profit organization that works to provide educational opportunities, emotional support, after-school care, nutritious meals and regular health check-ups to the orphan and vulnerable young minds in Nepal.

How to reach Garbett Point Trek from Mumbai/Pune

The cheapest and the convenient way to reach Garbett Point Trek base village (Diksal) is via railways . The nearest railway station is the Bhivpuri Road station which is just a few meters away from the Diksal Village. For those coming from Mumbai, you can catch a Karjat bound local train and get down at Bhivpuri Road station (E.g. CSTM 4:50 AM – Bhivpuri Road 06:58 AM).

How to reach Garbett point trek from Pune Mumbai-min

If you are coming from Pune, you can catch an early morning train for Karjat and then another local train for Bhivpuri Road Station. At Bhivpuri station, you can ask anyone for the route to Dhom Dam (Diksal village) which is the start point of the trek.

For the return journey, you can take a shared taxi to reach Neral from Dasturi Naka (end point of Garbett point trek). Local trains from Neral are available to reach other parts of Mumbai.

Difficulty level of Garbett point trek

I would rate Garbett point trek as a  moderate level trek  in terms of difficulty. It generally takes around 4-5 hours to complete the trek –> 3-4 hours of ascending to reach the Garbett Point from Diksal Village and 1 hour of descending to reach Dasturi Naka which is the end point of the trek.

Few stretches while ascending are quite steep and one needs to be extra careful while trekking in monsoon season as it becomes quite slippery. If you are planning to do the trek in summers, I would recommend you to start your day early as it becomes extremely hot in the afternoon.

My journey to Garbett point trek

A couple of weeks ago, while scrolling through the news feed on my Facebook account, my eyes glued to a post by Kuntal. He was planning to organize a moderate grade, one-day trek, zero waste, and vegan-friendly hike to Matheran via Garbett point as a part of the first-ever “ Walk, Hike, Go ” to be held in India. Without a second thought, I texted him and asked him if could join him on this trek.

Woo-hoo!! I was on cloud nine!!! I was super excited to do a trek with one of my inspiration. Last time, when I met him on Everest base camp trek back in the year 2016, we barely interacted for a couple of minutes. But in the short interaction, I was so much inspired by his way of living the life. We exchanged our social media handles and I wished him good luck for his Everest expedition.

15 th September 2018 – Finally the day arrived for the Garbett point trek!!

I started from Pune around 3:30 am and took the Latur CSTM Express train to reach Karjat by 6:00 am. From Karjat station, I took a local train and reached Bhivpuri road station which was the planned meeting point of all the fellow trekkers. Within a few minutes, everyone arrived and we were around 50 in the count. Yes, you heard it right!!!

Onacheaptrip at Dhom Dam Garbett Point Trek

And Kuntal was one among them, I was so happy to see him after so long. After a brief introduction, we headed towards the Diksal Village where we had breakfast. The initial trail is a dirt road, which passes next to the Tatoba Temple and takes you to the Dhom dam which is also known as Bhivpuri Lake. The view of the dam with huge mountains in the backdrop covered under clouds was a perfect moment to capture.

We could see a roaring waterfall in the distance and there were quite a few around Garbett point trek route. After walking along the Dhom Lake for around half an hour and climbing a small steep hill, we made it to the first landmark- “The hill with a huge tree”.

General introduction at Garbett Point Trek

Kuntal giving an introduction about Sunsar Maya

It was a day of blue skies with the sun shining to its brightest; the weather was extremely hot and humid, a rarity in Mumbai during this time of the year. The breathtaking views of the lush green surrounding regions kept us motivated to move further.

Our next stop was at a small village Sagachiwadi which is built on the hilly terrain. Walking across numerous paddy fields at such altitude was a moment to remember. You can ask for directions from the villagers, they are very helpful and will be more than happy to help you. Also, you may get your water bottles filled here.

The further climb from the village is very steep with again a big tree as the next landmark. From here you can sense that Garbett Plateau is just nearby. After hiking for around 20-30 minutes, we finally made it to the Garbett Plateau.

Lush green Garbett Plateau

Garbett Plateau Matheran

Wow!! I haven’t seen anything much greenish!! The plateau reminded me of the childhood paintings with lush green carpet and small huts and water bodies in the vicinity. Almost every one of us lay down on the vast plateau, the blistering heat had already knackered quite a bit.

Beautiful Dhom dam Garbett Point Trek

At the plateau, one has two alternatives to choose from, either climb up the steep section to the Garbett point and descend to the Dasturi Naka (end point of the trek) or take the longer route amidst jungles (30-40 minutes) to reach the Dasturi Naka. Being such a huge group and keeping safety in view, we decided to take the longer route.

Owing to the extreme humidity, the sky finally opened up and it started pouring down heavily. We were enjoying every bit of raindrops falling over our tired body. Within a few minutes, I was completely drenched. All the tiredness was gone!! Thank you rain Gods for being so kind on us.

After walking for half an hour, we finally made it to the Dasturi Naka. During the entire trek, I loved every bit of my conversation with Kuntal. I was so happy to know more about him, and wish I could follow his lifestyle, especially the “Veganism”.

Morbe Dam as seen from Garbett Plateau

After reaching Dasturi Naka, we took a shared cab for Neral (INR 70) and decided to do lunch over there. It was time to put an end to yet another exciting trek. With all the happy memories, I boarded into a train for Pune.

Stay and food options at Garbett Point Trek

As such, there is no stay option at the Garbett Point trek. One can pitch a tent somewhere on the Garbett Plateau but remember winds are generally quite strong at the plateau and putting a tent would be tough. One can combine the Garbett Point trek with Matheran trip and stay somewhere in Matheran. For more details, check out my earlier post on Matheran .

The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.

At the start point, there are few dhabas which serve the local Maharashtrian food. There is no food option along the trek route, so I would advise you to carry all the eatables along with you. Also, remember to carry at least 2 water bottles with you. Once you finish with the trek, you can have delicious lunch at Dasturi Naka as there are few food options available over there.

Best time to visit Garbett Point Trek

Undoubtedly, the rainy months of  July, August and September  is the best time to visit the Garbett Point trek as the surroundings are lush green and the weather is extremely pleasant. But remember, for the most part of the day the surroundings may not be visible from the Garbett Point due to the heavy fog.

September to February will be the perfect time to visit Garbett point trek if you looking to have a glimpse of Dhom dam and its nearby regions. Summers are extremely hot so I would advise starting with the trek very early.

Cloudy at Garbett Point Trek

The trek was organized to raise awareness and funds for  Sunsar Maya . Giving is not just about making a donation; it’s about making a difference.

Do contribute:  Walk Hike Go! Mumbai

A long-term wait to do a trek with one of my inspiration Kuntal finally got fulfilled. Hopefully, I will be joining him for more treks in the near future.

History of garbett plateau.

Garbett Plateau doesn’t have a great historical background. It was discoverd and gain importance due to its connectivity to Matheran. The credit for discovering the scenic Garbett Plateau goes to Hugh Poyntz Malet, the Thane district collector, in 1850.

How to reach Garbett Plateau from Mumbai And Pune

Bhivpuri Road Station is the nearest railway station to the Garbett Plateau trek starting point.

Catch a Mumbai local train going to Karjat or Khopoli and get down at Bhivpuri railway station. The starting point is just a walkable distance from the station. You can get any local help there.

Things to do at Garbett Plateau

garbett plateau

  • Enjoy the panoramic views from the plateau.
  • Visit the Garbett Point temple.
  • Take a walk through the nearby forests.
  • Have a picnic lunch or dinner on the plateau.

Food Availability at Garbett Plateau

bhivpuri to garbett point trek distance

Food is not available throughout the route. While we were trekking, we found one stall where the locals were selling lemon juice, tea, and other snacks. But you cannot rely on those. Because, if the weather is not apt, they might not pitch their stalls there.

Hence, carry your own packed food and a good amount of water, as it is a long trek.

You can find many shops and small hotels in the Bhivpuri station area where you can have your breakfast or get your meals.

Height – 2,625 feet (800 meters) above sea level.

What to Expect at the Garbett Point?

bhivpuri to garbett point trek distance

The mountain range is often covered with fog. You can capture beautiful timelapse there.

If you are trekking in a rainy season, then you will definitely catch rain.

It is always windy up there and the winds are quite strong.

Trek Distance and Route of Garbett Plateau Trek

bhivpuri to garbett point trek distance

There are two routes for the Garbett Plateau trek

1. Bhivpuri – Bhivpuri (16 km)

2. Bhivpuri – Matheran Dastur Naka (around 10 km)

Usually, trekkers prefer the second route where they can start the trek from Bhivpuri and end in Matheran.

There are two routes to reach Matheran Dastur Naka from Garbett Point. One is from inside the village and the other one is a track route that can eventually lead to Neral Station.

The latter offers incredible views of peaks in the Sabyadri Mountain range such as Peb Fort, Irshalgad, Prabalgad, etc.

Trek Difficulty of Garbett Plateau

This trek is easy and can be done by beginners. Although, this is one of the longest treks in Maharashtra and requires a lot of walking and hiking. If you are physically fit and have high endurance, this trek is just for you.

Time needed for Garbett Plateau Trek

Total 6-7 hours (To and Fro)

The ideal time to reach the summit would be 3 hours from Bhivpuri Station. Another 2-3 hours would be needed to descend from the Neral-Matheran Side.

Even if you decide to come back to Bhivpuri’s side, it will take around 3 hours.

This trek route has wonderful waterfalls and mountain trails; we had stopped at many places to enjoy the trail.

I would personally suggest you start trekking early in the morning around 7 a.m. So that, by the evening time you would reach the base village.

Night Trekking and Camping at Garbett Plateau

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Saloni (@_solivagent__)

Yes, you can trek at night here. Also, you can pitch your own tents at the summit. There are no specific rules for that.

Watch out for the winds, as the winds are very strong. Pitching a tent would be difficult. If you are camping in the rainy season, then make sure your tent is water-resistant.

Decathlon has a good range of tents that are specifically made for the Sahyadri terrain. They are water-resistant and sturdy enough to withstand Sahyadri’s harsh weather conditions.

Some of their tents provide UV protection as well making these tents suitable for summer camping as well.

Garbett Point is an open plateau and hence it is almost always colder. If you are going there in the winter season, then be sure, that you are backed up with good winter clothes.

Garbett Point is amidst a mountain range and lush greenery, so carry torches.

Things to carry

  • Good trekking shoes (especially in monsoon) as it gets really slippery in the rainy season.
  • Enough water (you can refill water at one of the many water bodies you may encounter en route)
  • Enough food (There are no shops throughout the trail, so pack your meals in the base village itself)
  • Raincoat (avoid umbrellas as it gets windy) (at one point we had to stop walking due to fog and winds)
  • Camera (Garbett Plateau offers unique scenery and if you are lucky enough you can also see fog and shoot a serene timelapse.

For Night Camping at Garbett Point

  • Sleeping Bag
  • Sleeping Mat

My Personal Experience of Trekking to Garbett Plateau

Weekends used to be all about trekking for us. Garbett Plateau had been on our wish list forever. Finally, one post-lockdown weekend, my friend and I decided to go for it. Train tickets were hard to get unless it was an emergency, but somehow we snagged some!

We reached Bhivpuri station, grabbed breakfast, and started towards the base of the trek. The sun was already getting strong. This was a longer trek, so we didn’t see many people around.

The trail was beautiful and kept changing. We crossed farms, jungles, plains, small mountains, even waterfalls and ponds! We took our time, enjoying the scenery.

Finally, we reached a small shop run by a local couple, selling juices and tea. We sipped on lemon juice and chatted with them. They surprised us by saying we weren’t even halfway yet, and there wouldn’t be any more food stops. Noon was approaching, so we decided to pick up the pace.

The couple also gave us tips on the way down, and we took a picture with the friendly uncle before saying goodbye. But within 20-30 minutes, the weather did a complete flip-flop. It got gloomy and super windy. We knew rain was coming.

The wind got so strong we couldn’t move. We were stuck on a narrow mountain path! All we could do was wait and hope the storm would pass.

Our rumbling tummies couldn’t wait any longer, so we enjoyed our packed lunch with a view. The storm finally calmed down, and we were back on the trail.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shivani (@hello_h_e_l_l__)

Then, like a peek-a-boo, the plateau emerged! Surrounded by mountains, it was half-hidden in the fog. We weren’t alone – other hikers were using this route to go down too.

We decided to make our descent from Matheran. We stopped often, just to soak in the beauty around us. The way the fog and wind danced together looked like a nature timelapse come to life!

By late afternoon, we were feeling the trek. To top it off, my fear of heights decided to show up. There were a few small hills to climb, and the rain made them slippery. We were completely alone! But my friend helped me through the panic, and we finally reached the top.

The view was incredible! We snapped some pictures, kicked off our shoes, let our hair down, and even took a nap on the bare ground. All our tiredness seemed to melt away.

After a relaxing break, we started our descent towards Neral. This route was a breeze – a simple jungle path with stunning scenery.

On our way down, we crossed the Matheran Toy Train route and caught a breathtaking sunset. We could even see the forts of Peb, Prabalgad, and others standing tall in the Sahyadris.

We were having a great trek but lost track of time. It got dark fast! Suddenly, we saw a big pile of rocks blocking the way – a landslide! This can happen in monsoons, that’s why the Matheran Toy Train stops running this time of year.

We tried to cross a muddy patch, but our feet got stuck! Even a crane was stuck there. It was getting dark and scary, we didn’t know what to do. Luckily, some locals helped us out and showed us the way.

Finally, we started going down again, this time on a proper road. It was dark and there were no lights, so we felt a little unsafe. We even checked Google Maps and realized we had 6 more kilometers to walk!

But then, good luck! A car stopped and gave us a ride to the station for only 200 rupees.

Here’s what we learned: Start trekking early so you have enough daylight. Don’t underestimate the dangers – you can get lost in the jungle, and the darkness can be risky. Always plan ahead and be prepared!

Responsible Trekking in Sahyadri

  • Be sure that you are only leaving footprints in the beautiful nature of Sahyadri.
  • Do not litter garbage.
  • Carry a garbage bag for your litter.
  • Carry a metal water bottle rather than a plastic one.
  • Carry your food in the lunch box rather than plastic bags.
  • Avoid feeding wild animals.
  • Do not harm plants and animals in the area.
  • Do not contaminate the water bodies.
  • Do not play loud music in the jungles. Enjoy nature’s peace and let everyone enjoy.
  • Do not engage in activities like consuming drugs and alcohol.
  • Do not write anything on the historic places such as walls.
  • Sahyadri can be really unpredictable in terms of nature. Ensure you are taking every safety measure while wandering.

Garbett Plateau: About the trek

garbett plateau

Garbett Plateau is a famous trek in the Matheran region of Maharashtra and one of the best treks for beginners. July-September is the best time to do this trek, as the entire area is lush green & the climate is also pleasant.

The main Garbett point is at an altitude of 2625 ft.

The trek starts from the beautiful Dhom lake, a sight in itself during the monsoon season.

Best Season:  Monsoon (July-September)

Difficulty:  Easy-Moderate (Endurance: Moderate)

After finishing the trek, you can go towards  Matheran  & then take  a shared cab or rickshaw  to  Neral  station & take the train to Dadar. The taxi will cost INR 80 .

Trek Route & Difficulty

garbett plateau

It is a good trek for  physically fit beginners  who can run 5 kms in under 40 mins or are moderately active.

The  hike  is around  10 kms long , but after reaching Garbett Point, it is a straight walk towards Matheran.

It will take about  4 hours to get the top from Diksal .

During monsoons, you can also enjoy the season  Diksal waterfall  just when you  start the trek .

In recent years, the trek has become pretty famous, and now the trail is  appropriately marked  & hence you  do not require a local guide  to do the hike.

The first part of the trek from Dhom lake to Sagachiwadi is easy and doesn’t require much effort.

Sagachiwadi  is almost at the  50% mark  of the trek; one can take a break for some time because the climb to Garbett point from this village is steep & will require  1.5 hours to reach the plateau  & another 30-40 mins to get to the end.

The final patch from Garbett point to Dasturi Naka (Matheran) is approximately 3kms, a gradual walk.

Garbett plateau trek guide, abdullah alam, 11 jul 2021.

Garbett Point and Garbett Plateau are situated at the top of one of the several mountains in the Matheran range. It it is at approximately the same altitude as Matheran, but having an open vista all around, with very few tall trees, it offers incredible views of the range all around. Here's how to get there.

Route #1: Bhivpuri

The route from Bhivpuri is the longer of the two. It is more scenic and beautiful, but also longer and slightly more difficult.

Here are the details -

Arrive at Diksal village. Bhivpuri railway station is located at the edge of Diksal, making it a convenient access point for the trek. From here, walk up to the reservoir of Dhom dam. The reservoir is near Diksal, and takes barely a couple of minutes to walk there.

Once at the reservoir, look for a trail that begins along the left bank of the reservoir. The trail is quite scenic, and runs at ground level along the bank for quite some distance, crossing streams and waterfalls. After walking some distance you will come across a river that runs into the reservoir. Cross this river to find the trail that leads up to the next village, Sagachiwadi. The trail leading to Garbett Plateau skims around Sagachiwadi. Follow the trail to reach Garbettt Plateau.

Garbett Point is another point a small climb up from the plateau, the highest point of that particular mountain.

Dhom Dam Reservoir

Route #2: Matheran

This route is the easier one. Along the winding road upto Matheran, there is an opening in the wall on the left side, from where a trail that directly leads to Garbett Plateau begins. The local drivers there know where this is, and will drop you off at the right spot. The route is straightforward and well-made, and leads right to the plateau. A lot less challenging, it is perfect if you just want to visit the plateau to chill out for a while.

The Bhivpuri route is tricky to climb down in monsoons; the last leg of the trail is steep, with water trickling over the rocks. Easy enough to climb up, but trickier to climb down. Doable, but difficult. Here is an itinerary that I would advise to follow -

  • Train to Bhivpuri
  • Bhivpuri -> Dhom
  • Dhom -> Sagachiwadi
  • Sagachidwadi -> Garbett Plateau
  • Garbett Plateau -> Matheran
  • Matheran -> Neral
  • Train back home from Neral

The route to Matheran from Garbett Plateau begins on the right side of the hillock on which Garbett Point is situated.

View from the end of Garbett Plateau

View from the end of the plateau

Cloud Formation

On one end of the plateau, lies Garbett Point. On the other end, the plateau ends into a cliff that forms a ridge with another mountain a little distance ahead (pictured above). That ridge, along with Garbett Plateau itself, form ideal conditions for orographic lift; a phenomenon where air moves up a sudden rise in the topography, either due to anabatic wind or simply horizontal winds being pushed up against a mountain.

This rising air cools down adiabatically, resulting in the rapid formation of clouds. If you are lucky, you might be able to see this happen up close.

First time I saw photos of Garbett plateau trek OR Garbett point trek I couldn’t resist looking at the photos again and again. That moment itself I planned that this was going to be my first monsoon trek that year. And here i was standing on Garbett plateau imagining how come such a beautiful place went unnoticed from me for so long. During monsoon clouds constantly cross Garbett plateau playing hide and seek with rain. This plateau view from the Garbett point of Matheran is what dreams are made of. Every once in a while clouds clear up to show beautiful views with Morbe dam on one side & Dhom lake on the other. In this Garbett point trek blog you will get all the information to plan this Garbett plateau trek yourself. More adventures like Garbett at the end of the post.

pre monsoon clouds at Garbett plateau trek

Matheran is one of the most famous hill stations in India where vehicles are not allowed. Normal tourists reach Matheran via the Neral toy train or just drive on the normal road to reach Dasturi Naka ( which is the entrance point of Matheran). These tourists then visit different view points of Matheran by walking or on a horse. However adventure lovers like me love to reach Matheran by trekking from base village to these view points. There are more than 10 Matheran trekking routes . Garbett point is such a beautiful view point in Matheran & this trek is a way to reach it from the base village. The namesake Garbett point provides a beautiful view of the Garbett plateau as seen by my friend Vicky just before monsoon.

Is Garbett point trek difficult for beginners ?

What is the difficulty level of Garbett plateau trek? Garbett trek is one of the easy sahyadri treks with perfect views in monsoon. You will need to have basic stamina to do this trek but trust me the views are so beautiful that no one will feel tired.

How long is the Garbett point trek ?

Niraj, how much time does it take to complete Garbett plateau trek ? It will take about 2.5 hrs to reach Garbett point and another 30 minutes to reach the main Matheran area. But make sure to have buffer time as you will click photos. Even the khadoos people who dont like to click photos turn into a photographer after reaching here. If you are planning a descend trek you will need 90 minutes to get down.

Khane me kya hai ?

Many hotels are available at Matheran & Diksal which the two end points of the trek. However i would suggest to support locals of Sagachiwadi which is at mid point for the trek. You can get tasty home made food here. ( checkout my trek food & trek gear )

Stay & Camping at Garbett Plateau

Hotels are available in Matheran which as you know is a famous hill station. Camping can be done on Garbett plateau in winter. In monsoon winds are too powerful for tents at Garbett point as well as Garbett plateau. Camping near Dhom dam seems to be a feasible option.

How to reach Garbett point trek from Mumbai and Pune ?

garbett plateau trek route map gpx Garbett point trek to Matheran, how to reach Garbett plateau trek Matheran

Garbett point trek to Matheran starts at Diksal, one walks through Diksal to reach Dhom dam. Walking around the dam we reach the Diksal waterfall . After a small stream crossing & a small climb we reach a big tree & further to a village called Sagachiwadi which is surrounded by paddy fields. From here walking pass a well we climb to reach the Garbett plateau.

Once we reach Garbett plateau we need to climb to the Garbett point where the trek is officially complete. From here one can reach Dasturi Naka ( entrance point of Matheran) take a shared taxi to Neral railway station and head home.

Nearest Railway Station is Bhivpuri Railway station (Diksal) & Neral Railway station ( For Moving to Matheran)

These two railway stations are very well connected with Mumbai and Pune. From Mumbai one can catch a Karjat local and get down directly at these stations. While coming from Pune one also get on a Karjat train and change to local trains at Karjat to get down at these stations which are 10-15 minutes away.

From Matheran to Neral station there is plenty of connectivity with shared taxis charging Rs 70 per head.

Garbett Point Trek to Matheran : TheFreeBird’s Story

As part of my #ProjectMatheran I am covering all the trekking routes to Matheran. Since the time I had seen photos of Garbett plateau I was counting days till monsoon. As soon as it started raining I took the first train to Bhivpuri road railway station. From station one needs to walk through the Diksal city (15-20 minutes) to Dhom dam from where the Garbett trek starts

Dhom dam & Diksal waterfall during Garbett trek

Dhom dam has a huge expanse. The size of its banks changes through the year with the amount of water . During monsoon the water rises more and we need to walk more as backwaters rise in certain areas. Once I started walking past the dam I could see the Diksal waterfall & the BIG tree on its right side. The first target was to go near this waterfall

As I reached near the waterfall the sound of a near by water stream became louder and louder. I was enticed to take a plunge in this stream but the water was too cold. I didnt want to wet my shoes at the start of the trek hence I took them off for stream crossing.

Water stream crossing near Diksal waterfall enroute Garbett point trek

The stream though not that big got me excited for the actual trek i.e climbing which starts from here. Taking the route on right side we reach this BIG TREE where we had out first snacks for the day. This tree’s shadow would be a blessing during a summer trek . With a small brunch we were once again on the trail.

The big tree near Dhom dam and Sagachiwadi

Gradually climbing higher we first reach Sagachiwadi. The trail passes through many paddy fields before reaching here. With proper sunlight this would be a sight to behold but that day it was very cloudy . We made out way through the village. There are few food options available in this village. If not for the brunch 10 minutes back I would have definitely had something here. #SupportLocals

Garbett trek through Sagachiwadi

Many kids were excited to see us in full trekking gear. Some took fancy to my friends DSLR. He took many photos which no one ever got to see again. Classic DSLR guy !!! Passing through the village we reached a well where we filled our bottles

Garbett point trek to Matheran BLog - The well near Sagachiwadi

Just after the well is a sign directing us to start climbing the short hill to reach the Garbett plateau. The cloudy climate had started to clear up and the view was getting better & better with each step. Soon the weather cleared up & Dhom dam became visible.

I was finally going to reach the Garbett plateau after waiting months for monsoon to start. But as fate would have it, it was a huge anticlimax as clouds gathered all over the plateau minutes before I reached it. I was praying for the nature god to clear the climate and give me a sneak peak for the view around. We waited for some time in vain and started to walk towards the Garbett point. The clouds did clear up a bit but not as much as a photographer would have wanted..

When you see my updates, you'll be motivated to go out in nature and get some fresh air & peace

The clouds continued to play with the mountain. The trees & Garbett point disappearing within clouds every now & then did provide a unique experience. We walked towards the Garbett point which was mostly hidden behind clouds untill we reached near it .

Garbett point from Garbett plateau surrounded by clouds

As we started climbing towards the Garbett point the clouds were back in action. Wind speed increased drastically making it even difficult to walk. I mean come on Nature God do you really want me not see anything on this Garbett trek ??

But even the darkest cloud has silver lining . The wind picking up speed bore unexpected fruits as the the clouds started to clear up & soon I was shocked to witness this Garbett plateau unravelling its beauty in a magical way.

The famous view from Garbett point Matheran had disappeared today and only railings were visible to identify the view point

Garbett point engulfed by clouds

Above is what Garbett point view of the plateau looks like without clouds but I feel the cloud experience is a hundred times better. Since no view was visible we moved ahead towards Matheran market. Its about 2 kms of walk to reach the main market. Even the inner trails in Matheran were cloudy.

Walkign through clouds in Matheran

We passed under many trees to finally reach the main road of Matheran which runs besides the railway track. This Garbett trail meets the Matheran railway track at this point which conveniently happens to be a tea stall. A cup of tea always tastes good when you been trekking for hours completely drenched.

Matheran's toy train stopped for monsoon

With the hot tea in our systems we walked over the railway track to reach Matheran railway station where the toy train was parked for the monsoon season. The train service is stopped in monsoon due to constant landslides. We went to the main market area, moved around a bit before calling it a day

Next move was to reach Dasturi Naka, get into a shared taxi to Neral railway station. A day well spent in sahyadris

I saw similar pre monsoon clouds just yesterday where we couldn’t see scenery at all. We waited for half an hour for the clouds to clear up but they didnt go away. Got no photos 😓

Garbett is always covered in clouds. Sometimes you dont get to see much due to cloudy weather. But trust me its equally beautiful & be sure it would be much more memorable than the photos

  • There isn’t an age restriction on any of our experiences, everyone is welcome. However, the average Vagabond customer is anywhere between 20 – 32 years old. The experiences involve a good amount of time spent with the group. Depending on what experience you’re opting for, there could be a lot of walking and physical exertion.
  • It’s important to understand that most of our experiences include very rustic accommodation and not a luxurious means of transport. These may be basic in their facilities, but the hospitality is homely and comforting. If you’re someone who doesn’t like compromising on your comforts while travelling, this experience may not be very enjoyable.
  • Most of our trips have a healthy number of solo travellers. We encourage you to join us solo, especially if you’re tired of waiting on your friends. We promise you’ll return with many more.
  • We try our best to be responsible travellers. Everyone is welcome to explore with us, but we pay utmost importance to cleanliness on all our experiences. We encourage you to # LeaveNoTrace  behind while you discover the beauty of the outdoors.
  • It’s important to understand that in a limited amount of time, only a limited amount of experiences can be had. We like to cover a few places in-depth rather than just ticking off a long list of things-to-do and places-to-go. However, if you are that kind of traveller, on almost all trips you can feel free to wander by yourself to places of your interest.
  • At a Vagabond Experience, it’s important to stay open-minded and positive when things don’t go as per plan. The essence of traveling in a group is being able to help each other out when in need. The weather could go bad, and plans could get altered. In such situations, we urge you to have faith in your group leader to make the most informed decision for the group.

Years of experience:  We’ve been leading trips around the country since 2014. Our time in this field has helped us learn things about places and people that would not be possible without the amount of experience we have. This knowledge about the destination contributes to a more wholesome and enriching group experience.

Footfall:  Since our inception, we’ve led more than 4,500 people on treks, backpacking trips, camps, and outdoor experiences. Be rest assured, we’ve dealt with all kinds of people.

Safety first:  Given the time we’ve spent in the travel field, we know and believe in the importance of safety. All our Experience Managers are first-aid certified, and carry a well-equipped first-aid kit on every trip.

Solo / female traveller friendly:  Over the years we have noticed a trend in the increasing number of solo and female travellers on our trips. Many of our trips end up having a good amount of solo female travellers.

Group size:  We’ve come to realize that taking large groups of people compromises on an intimate interpersonal experience. Thus, our trips are led with a fairly small group of travellers who find it easier to get to know each other over the course of the trip.

No discrimination:  At Vagabond, we believe that your age, social class, gender or sexual orientation shouldn’t determine if you’re allowed on a trip or not. Anyone and everyone should feel safe and welcome to experience and explore new places.

Flexible itinerary:  On a Vagabond experience, you’re free to stray away from our scheduled itinerary and explore the place on your own. You do you. We’re not your travel guides. We’re here to facilitate a better understanding of the location and help you experience it in your own comfort zone.

Mindfulness to nature:  Over the years we’ve seen the places we visit turn filthier and less pristine. We don’t want to contribute to that any further. At a Vagabond experience, we encourage you to reduce your waste and leave the place cleaner than it was. Check out # LeaveNoTrace

In-depth research: We're not a tour & travel agency. Every experience we offer you has been researched and experienced firsthand by our core members. We visit the locations ourselves and curate an experience that we believe to be in sync with our ideologies.

Overview :

How do you determine your fitness?

Trekking requires good cardiovascular fitness. One can improve this by going for a run on a regular basis and breathing exercises also helps. Smoking also hampers lung capacity, avoid smoking if you want to improve your cardiovascular health.

Even though trekking requires full body strength but strong lower body helps a great deal. Hamstring, Glute and Calves are main muscles that are put to test on treks to name a few. Gym goers often pay less attention to lower body workouts and hence sometimes struggle on trek.

Some treks have less elevation gain (height gain) but are long treks, those trek require good endurance. Endurance can not be built overnight, it takes a long time and constant active lifestyle.

Just because you take long walks, do yoga or go to the gym does not necessarily mean that you are in good fitness. The type of workout you do and your cardiovascular fitness is what matters on treks.

If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 25 then you should only start with Easy treks.

How do we grade our treks ? Easy:  Ideal for first timers but if you are not in good fitness or have a less active lifestyle then select treks which have less than 2 hours of climbing.

Easy Moderate:  Ideal for first timers, but requires good endurance as these treks may have longer duration of climb even though terrain may be easy. Moderate:  These trek require good fitness and the terrain can be challenging, like constant climb or tricky patches. These are usually recommended only if you have done a few treks before and have done well on them. Fit and active beginners can also do these treks but we always suggest to start with easy treks.  Moderate-Difficult:  These trek are only for trekkers who have done few moderate level treks before and have good fitness and endurance.

Difficult:  These treks either have long trekking hours or have technical climb or both. Only suitable for people who trek regularly.

The Sunday Sunbathing - Trek To Matheran Via Garbett Plateau, Western Ghats, India

Photo of Dipanwita Chakraborty

When you are bitten by that crazy bug called wanderlust, your heart always wants to run away from the usual humdrums of everyday life at any given chance. And, if you get to wander every weekend, nothing like it.

I always promise myself that I would remain at home during weekends but my heart keeps nagging me to let loose, run away and escape. After returning from Dudhsagar a week before, I had decided to take a break from trekking for sometime. Yes, you heard me right… “Take a break from trekking”. There has hardly been any weekend that I was home since the start of May 2015 hence, my guilt ridden conscience advised me on the above.

Well, come Friday evening and my feet started itching, fingers already on the keyboard searching for next trekking schedule on Trek Mates India .  ;)

Couple of friends had already planned to tempt me by sharing pictures of the upcoming Sunday trek. The conclusion, I decided to keep my promise of staying at home over the weekend for some other time. Booked myself for the Sunday trek, “Trek to Matheran via Garbett Plateau” .

I have been supremely late in posting about this trek due to some xyz reasons but it’s better to be late than never.

Matheran is a splendid hill station in Raigad district of Maharashtra . Located around 90 kms from Mumbai and 120 kms from Pune , Matheran is also known as the smallest hill station of India . It is also known to be the most unpolluted hill station of Maharashtra and Asia’s only automobile-free hill station.

This exquisite place was discovered in 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane.

Matheran is located at an elevation of 2625 feet above MSL. It covers an area of 8 square kilometers in Sahyadris, The Western Ghats. It has also been declared as the eco-sensitive region by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India.

The close proximity to Mumbai and Pune makes it a popular weekend getaway destination.

The hill station is also a home for large population of monkeys including Bonnet Macaques and Hanuman Langurs. This place is a haven for snakes from harmless keelbacks to pythons to deadly cobras and vipers.

There are several trekking routes to Matheran to reach the famous Sunset Point, Garbett Point and One Tree Hill Point

We were to trek to Matheran and reach Garbett Point via Garbett Palteau. The usual itinerary of this trek is to start from Bhivpuri station and trek towards Garbett point. However, due to the sudden vanishing act of the monsoon, there was a last minute change resulting in “The Reverse itinerary”. Which meant the otherwise ascending point was now to be the descending point of our trek. And, the supposed monsoon trek was re-named as “The Sunburn Trek”

Well, the sun and the heat could not lower the enthusiasm of 28 headstrong soulss which were absolutely geared up to achieve the collective goal of exploring the most unpolluted hill station of Maharashtra.

Arun Kumar Dash was our trek leader along with Amit Angane as co-lead. We boarded the early morning Karjat fast local and were supposed to meet at Neral station. The adventure started long before the trek. One of our trekmates, Kartheek missed the train. Hence, we decided to wait for him at Neral until he managed to reach by the next train.

While Kartheek was on his way to Neral, we enjoyed a longer breakfast break. Be it school or trek, we always love to have longer breaks. ;)

We drove till the starting point in private vehicles from Neral station. Had our usual straight circle introduction round. Once again, the majority of this group consisted of CAs and first timers. Arun led us from front and Amit was the back lead.

The sun was at it’s brightest self and ready to burn. The first few minutes of the trail was muddy. The discussion on possibilities of the story ahead in the next sequel of Bahubali and debating on the reasons as to why had Kattappa killed Bahubali made the walk less tiring and more fun. Everyone kind of jumped into the discussion and started pouring in their personal versions of logical reasoning behind Bahubali’s murder.

Arun had warned us of the presence of snakes and we were very much keen on coming face to face with one but to our disappointment, not a single snake came to greet us. The surrounding was beautiful with wild flowers at full blossom and numerous colorful butterflies fluttering over. I had not carried my camera and missed it the most. However, to my utter contentment, Vaibhav was considerate enough to lend his camera and I could satiate my wish of clicking pictures my own way.

A lesson learned- Never ever leave your camera behind when you are on for trails.

After half an hour’s walk, we were ready to climb to the Garbett Point. The climb was quite easy and quick but tiring due to the heat. Amrita and I quickly grabbed our place under a huge tree and settled down. Everyone followed and so did the Langurs.

We headed for our descend towards the Garbett Plateau after a longgggg break.

Lunch at Garbett plateau followed by crazy photosession. The pictures are proof of the craziness that followed.

The descend towards Bhivpuri was like a never ending affair. We encouraged all first timers by ensuring that they were just 10 minutes away from the target village each time they inquired about the amount of time left to reach there. The sun and the heat really pierced deep into the skin. We were dehydrated to core. After around an hour, we reached the nearby village, refreshed by the village well and rested till everyone reached.

The villagers were celebrating Dahi-Handi , children dancing on bollywood tunes. How could our trekmates miss this kind of fun. Vaibhav, Aman, Ansh and Shatrughan joined the village folks and enjoyed the rain dance.

The next leg of the trail was a simple walk along the lush green fields till we reached a small pool with waterfall. Completely sun burnt and exhausted of the heat, everyone jumped into the pool and had a splash. Amrita and I quit the idea of getting into the water and rather enjoyed watching everyone play.

The last leg of the trek was walking along the shores of the Bhivpuri lake. The lake was simply beautiful, calm and serene. The reflection of green hills in the still water of the lake was something worth waiting and watching. Had evening refreshments at Diksal village, near Bhivpuri station.

We had to catch the 6:51 PM Karjat local back to Mumbai from Bhivpuri station, which is 5 mins walk from Diksal. We were late. By the time we neared Bhivpuri station, the train had already arrived. And then, started the ultimate run of the season. All 28 trekmates ran to catch the train as if it was the run for life. Mumbai RPF extended the helping hand by stopping the train till all of us boarded safely. A big thank you to Mumbai RPF.

Although awfully sun-burnt, I was happy that I had decided not to take break from trekking so soon. May be, I would spend few more weekends trekking till the world comes to an end.

My next target is to go for a range trek. I hope this materializes in next to no time.
