Travel Cost Calculator

Quick links, trip pricing calculator.

Travelmath provides an online cost calculator to help you determine the cost of driving between cities. You can use this data to figure out a budget for a road trip. The driving calculation is based on the average fuel efficiency of your vehicle, and you can change the gas mileage in mpg or L/100 km to match your exact make and model. Gas prices are automatically estimated based on current fluctuations, and again you can adjust these to fit your local gas station prices. Both U.S. and international units are available to make the calculations easier to use, and the output is given for both one-way and round trip travel routes.

Check the driving distance for your planned route, and see if the total driving time requires an overnight stay. If it's a long trip, you may want to research some hotels along the way . Or compare whether it's better to fly or drive to your destination.

Fuel Needed & Fuel Cost Calculations

In order to calculate the amount of fuel for a given trip using our fuel cost calculator or otherwise, you need to know the total distance you will be covering and the expected average fuel consumption of your vehicle. It works the same way for cars, trucks, buses, vans, SUVs, and even boats and planes. If you also want to calculate the fuel cost of a trip, then you need to know the price per gallon or price per liter at which you can by.

Our calculator supports entering distances in miles and kilometers. In terms of fuel consumption, it is very versatile as it accepts: miles per gallon, gallons per 100 miles, kilometers per liter and liters per 100 kilometers. In the US, miles per gallon and kilometers per liter would more frequently used, while in most of Europe the preferred metric would be liters to travel 100 km and gallons to cover 100 miles. The result in terms of fuel amount is in gallons or liters, and for fuel cost is in the currency you entered it in (you can simply ignore the currency sign, e.g. $ (USD)).

Make sure to account for the variation in fuel consumption when driving within city limits and on highways - usually the consumption is higher in the former case. Always fill your tank with more fuel than you anticipate you would need, especially during winter or when driving through desolate areas or when extreme weather conditions are expected.

    Formula for fuel amount

If you are using mpg (miles per gallon), then the formula for calculating the total amount of gas needed is:

Fuel = Distance / Consumption mpg

For example, if the distance is 500 miles and consumption is 20 miles per gallon, then the fuel you will need for the entire distance is 500 / 20 = 25 gallons.

If you are using gallons per 100 mi to measure consumption, then the formula for calculating the amount of fuel needed is:

Fuel = Distance / 100 x Consumption per 100 mi

For example, if the distance is 300 miles and the consumption is 5 gallons per 100 miles, you will need 300 / 100 x 5 = 15 gallons of gas.

Both formulas are applicable for metric units - km and liters, just make sure you do not mix metric units. Using an online fuel calculator will make sure you do not commit that mistake.

    How to improve fuel economy?

Don't like the numbers you see when you use our tool? If you wonder how you can improve the fuel efficiency of your vehicle so you can cover more miles (or kilometers) with less fuel, we have some tips that can result in significant savings, especially when applied consistently over time. Here is our list of 10 fuel efficiency tips :

  • Drive sensibly - If you drive aggressively - too fast compared to other cars, constantly overtaking other vehicles, and rapid acceleration followed by braking, only to accelerate again wastes a lot of gas. By some estimates, quick starts and hard stops can increase fuel consumption by more than 30% ! This is why this is number one in our fuel efficiency list.
  • Observe the speed limit - Different vehicles have optimal fuel economy at different velocities, but one way to increase gas mileage is to avoid driving at higher speeds. A small reduction of your average speed , say from 70 mph to 60 mph (equivalently: from 115 km/h to 100 km/h) can help you save 10 to 20% due to lower fuel consumption.
  • Follow the leader - drive at about the speed of the vehicle in front of you, if they are following the first 2 tips above. This will make sure you need to accelerate and decelerate as little as possible. If possible, overtake drivers who do not follow them, as it will make it very hard for you to do so. This will result in smaller numbers from our fuel cost calculator.
  • Check your tires - make sure your tire pressure is at optimal levels as indicated in the owner's manual provided by the auto manufacturer. If the pressure is too low your mileage will decrease significantly, not to mention that the car may become dangerous to drive.
  • Smart routing - make sure you take optimal paths to reach your desired destination. Learn the different modes of route selection your GPS employs - the shortest is not always the fastest and idling stuck in traffic will waste fuel. Use services such as Google Maps to check for traffic congestions on the planned route. Using a route you know well can also help improve fuel efficiency, since you will know in advance where it makes sense to increase speed and where it does not, because of a traffic light just ahead.
  • Air conditioning - turning it off will most likely improve your fuel efficiency by 10-15%, and will result in you having more power to accelerate quicker when needed. If it is necessary, make sure you do not set it to unreasonably low or high levels. Air temperature in the range between 64°F - 75°F (18°C - 24°C) is comfortable for most people. Due to the law of thermodynamics, each subsequent degree of heating or cooling requires progressively more energy to accomplish and maintain.
  • Remove excess weight - make sure you remove any unneeded heavy items you have in your trunk. One of the untold benefits of losing weight is that your car will be a bit more efficient as well.
  • Turn cruise control ON - when on a highway, make sure to use your cruise control option. By keeping your speed constant, it will most likely save gas and result in lower fuel costs.
  • Avoid idling - idling means 0 miles per gallon and the larger the car engine, the more gas is wasted when idling. Avoid excessive idling, when possible, in line with point #5 above to keep fuel costs low.
  • Maintain your vehicle - a well-maintained car, truck, van, SUV, etc. will operate at greater efficiency. Exact fuel savings are hard to calculate, as it will depend on the type of maintenance work your vehicle needs. However, good maintenance is sure to lead to fuel savings and smaller cost numbers coming out of our calculator.

fuel cost

All the above advice is fine, but what do you do if you have been following the above advice, yet our tool still shows you numbers that are so high you want to cry? Well, it is most likely time for a new car, or it could be just the fuel price fluctuations over which, unfortunately, neither you nor we have much influence, individually. Fuel prices in most places contain license fees and other state or local government taxes, in some places reaching as much as 50% of the final price. Financial market fluctuations, natural disasters or extreme weather, crisis, as well the geographical area you are in and the local fuel suppliers all influence the price of gas. All you can do is try to observe them and predict when you can get a more decent price.

Why you should know how much fuel you will need and the cost before buying gas for your trip

With the price of gas going up daily and your buying power steadily declining due to inflation, the unfortunate truth is that it is unwise to plan a road trip without first calculating the cost of gas. After all, gas is not the only thing you will need.

Before you plan your trip, you need to recognize that there can be lots of unexpected expenses when you are away from home. As such careful planning and a detailed budget are most important for a worry-free trip. You can typically expect to spend money on:

  • Entertainment;
  • Emergency repairs;
  • Emergency medical care.

šŸ™‹ While we took care of the fuel price in this calculator, you may also check out our speed calculator to help you plan your activities. If you plan to lease a car for your trip, our car lease calculator may also interest you.

Process used by our fuel cost calculator to find how much gas you will need as well as the cost of your trip

To calculate how much fuel you will need, here is the formula used by our fuel cost calculator:

Fuel amount= Distance / Fuel efficiency

For instance, if you wish to travel 100 km with a vehicle with a fuel efficiency of 5 kilometers per liter , substitute these variables into the formula above:

Fuel amount= 100 / 5 = 20 liters

Our calculator also uses the amount of fuel and the cost of gas in your area to calculate the total cost of your trip. For this, we use the following formula:

Trip cost = Fuel amount Ɨ Fuel price

So using the amount of fuel given in the above problem, if the price of gas was $7 , then to calculate the amount of money needed for the trip, we put these values into the formula, and we get:

Trip cost = 20 Ɨ 7 = $140

What is the best way to take a road trip on a small budget?

If you are planning a road trip for your vacation, but your budget is relatively small, here are a few things you can do:

  • Go during the offseason. Vacation rentals cost less in the offseason. This price reduction is because the demand for these places is relatively low during the off-season. So owners and agents reduce the price to attract more visitors.
  • Take a road trip with others willing to share the cost. Sharing the cost will reduce your individual payment. For instance, if the fuel price for the trip is $1000, you will pay less by splitting that cost five ways between friends. You can do this using our gas cost calculator .
  • Try camping to reduce the cost of accommodation. Campsites cost less than the average hotel.
  • Research fun, entertaining activities that you and your friends can do free of cost or for a small fee. For example, use a map to explore with your team rather than hiring a tour guide.
  • Pack food that you can quickly fix on the go rather than eating in restaurants. The cost of food can eat into your vacation money. As such, finding ways to eat for less can make the difference in the amount and type of activities you will be able to engage in.

Is it cheaper to drive or fly for long distances?

Due to the additional costs for items such as food and accommodation for several days, a road trip across great distances can cost significantly higher for long-distance trips than flying. This can, of course, be affected by these factors:

  • Number of persons on the trip;
  • Whether the cost is shared or not; and
  • Type of accommodation used.

How do I calculate fuel cost?

To calculate the fuel cost, we use one of the following formulas:

  • Fuel cost = (Distance / Efficiency per gallon) Ɨ Cost per gallon
  • Fuel cost = (Distance / [100 Ɨ Consumption per 100 mi]) Ɨ Cost per gallon

Use the first formula if you have the car's efficiency in miles per gallon (mpg).

On the other hand, we use the second formula if the consumption is in gallons per 100 miles.

How do I calculate fuel cost per month?

To find the fuel cost per month:

  • Multiply the distance per day by the number of days per month.
  • Divide this by your vehicleā€™s efficiency per gallon.
  • Multiply the answer by the price per gallon.

How much does a gallon of gas weigh?

A gallon of gasoline weighs approximately 6.073 lbs in the US.

Gasoline contains additives that affect its final weight. These vary from country to country. As such, it is impossible to give an exact weight worldwide.

Fuel Cost Calculator

Budget for your daily commute or your next road trip.

Simple Ways to Save on Gas

How our fuel cost calculator works, factors that determine fuel price, fuel cost faq.

Maya Afilalo

Gas is an expense of car ownership that can quietly add up over time. Enter your carā€™s average miles per gallon (mpg), the length of your daily commute or the next road trip you plan to take, and the cost of gas, and see how much you can expect to pay. For commuting, be sure to enter your round trip mileage rather than just one way.

Sharing a ride ā€” for example, driving to work with a colleague or offering to split driving duties with other parents ā€” is a great way to reduce spending on fuel (as well as reduce wear and tear on your vehicle). Carpooling, taking public transportation, walking, or biking just one day a week can save the typical commuter up to 1,200 miles every year, or an average of $170. 1

Choose another form of transportation

Rising gas prices are a major concern for most Americans, and the average car commuter spends $867 on fuel annually. 2 Additionally, the cost of vehicles themselves has risen sharply since the pandemic began. Biking, walking, and taking public transportation are often significantly less expensive than driving ā€” as well as less stressful. Experiment with taking an alternate form of transportation to work if possible, even just one day a week, to save time and money on gas.

Check your tire pressure

Properly inflated tires can improve your gas mileage by up to 3 percent and will last longer, saving you money on maintenance. 3 Check your tire pressure every month or so, using the sticker inside your driver door (or your vehicle manual) to see the proper pressure. Itā€™s best to adjust tire pressure when your tires are cold, before youā€™ve driven. You can buy a digital air compressor for about $30.

Keep up on vehicle maintenance

A well-maintained engine operates more efficiently, leading to better gas mileage. Regularly change your oil and replace air filters. Using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of oil and opting for ā€œenergy conservingā€ oil can contribute to fuel savings. Energy-conserving oils contain additives that reduce friction, making the engine more efficient and improving gas mileage.

Search the U.S. Department of Energyā€™s website to find your carā€™s mpg at https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml .

Drive the speed limit

Speeding is worse for your fuel economy (not to mention, a speeding ticket will increase the cost of auto insurance ). Avoid aggressive driving, such as rapid acceleration and hard braking, as it consumes more fuel. Maintain a steady speed and use cruise control on highways to optimize efficiency.

Plan efficient trips

The less you drive, the less youā€™ll spend on fuel. Try to consolidate errands into a single trip, rather than multiple separate trips. In a city, if possible park in a central location and walk to your different appointments, as stop-and-go traffic is worse for gas mileage.

DID YOU KNOW?

Research has found that driving is the most stressful method of commuting. 4

Consider a more fuel-efficient vehicle

When itā€™s time for another vehicle, consider a hybrid or electric car. Hybrids typically get 30 to 50 percent more miles per gallon than gas-powered cars. While electric and hybrid vehicles are more expensive than gas-powered cars, youā€™ll likely save on costs over the vehicleā€™s life, especially when you factor in tax credits. 5 Our Fuel Efficient Car Calculator and Electric or Gas Powered Car Calculator can help you decide whether it makes sense to trade in your current vehicle for one thatā€™s more efficient.

Below are some of the most fuel-efficient hybrid cars:

Below are some of the most fuel-efficient gas-powered (non-hybrid) cars:

* Estimated annual fuel cost savings are calculated based on upgrading from a 25 mpg car, driving 12,000 miles annually, and assuming a cost of gas at $3.50 per gallon.

Letā€™s say youā€™re driving 500 miles round trip in your 2019 Honda Civic, which gets an average of 36 miles per gallon. Divide the total number of trip miles (500) by your carā€™s mpg (36) to find the number of gallons youā€™ll use during the trip ā€” in this example, about 14 gallons .

Next, letā€™s say youā€™re driving in Arizona , where the average cost of a gallon of gas is $3.76 . Multiply the number of gallons youā€™ll use by the cost of fuel, and the result is the cost for your trip: $52.64 .

Follow a similar process to determine the cost of fuel for your daily commute. Letā€™s say you live 20 miles from work, meaning you drive 40 miles round trip every day.

Divide your daily mileage by your vehicleā€™s mpg. If you drive a 2019 Honda Civic which gets 36 mpg, youā€™ll use about 1.11 gallons of gas daily .

Finally, multiply the gas you use by the cost of fuel. If the average cost of a gallon of gas where you live is $3.76, youā€™ll spend around $4.16 daily on your commute. If you drive to work five days a week, fifty weeks a year, thatā€™s $20.80 weekly, $83.20 monthly, or $1,040.00 annually .

The average American household spends $150 to $200 on gas every month. 6 Transportation is usually the second-most expensive budget category, after housing.

Cost of Crude Oil

The primary factor influencing gas prices is the cost of crude oil, often accounting for over 50 percent of price. Changes in global oil supply and demand, geopolitical events, and decisions by oil-producing nations, especially those in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), can impact crude oil prices. For example, Russiaā€™s invasion of Ukraine increased the cost of crude oil significantly. Government intervention also plays a role; for example, when President Joe Biden released oil from U.S. strategic reserves to lower costs.

Federal, state, and local taxes contribute to the cost of gas. For example, one of the reasons gas is more expensive in California is that its tax on gasoline is higher than those of other states, accounting for about 13 percent of the price of a gallon of gas.

Distribution and Marketing Costs

The process of distributing and marketing gasoline involves costs related to transportation, storage, and the operation of gas stations. Distribution costs can vary based on the location and infrastructure.

Market Forces and Speculation

Like other commodities, the price of gas is influenced by market forces and speculation. Factors such as global economic conditions, supply and demand dynamics, and market speculation can contribute to price volatility.

Does Google Maps estimate fuel cost?

Google Maps does not currently estimate fuel cost. However, you can select your engine type and Google Maps will show you the most fuel-efficient route. You can also set the app to automatically use the most fuel-efficient route if the arrival times are similar.

How much gas do you need for a trip?

To calculate the amount of gas needed, you can use the following formula:

Total Distance Ć· Miles Per Gallon = Gas Needed

For example, if youā€™re driving 200 miles and your car gets 30 miles per gallon, youā€™ll need about 6.67 gallons of gas for your trip.

How much gas will $10 get me?

As of Nov. 15, 2023, the national average cost for a gallon of gas is $3.49, which means that $10 will get you about 2.87 gallons of gas. The average car gets around 25 miles per gallon, so 2.87 gallons will last you about 70 miles.

How much is the cost of gas to drive for 1 hour?

The cost of gas to drive for 1 hour depends on several factors, including the fuel efficiency of your vehicle, the current price of gas, and your driving conditions. To estimate the cost, you can use the following formula:

(Average Speed in mph Ć· Miles per Gallon) x Price per Gallon

For example, if youā€™ll be driving an average of 60 miles per hour and your car gets 25 miles per gallon, youā€™ll need about 2.4 gallons of gas for your trip. If the cost of gas is $3.49 per gallon, your hour-long trip will cost $8.38.

Does mileage make your insurance go up?

Mileage can increase your insurance, because the more you drive, the higher the chance of getting into an accident. Some insurance companies offer usage-based insurance and pay-per-mile insurance, which lower your premium if you drive fewer miles.

Mileage Calculator

Use the following mileage calculator to determine the travel distance, in terms of miles, and time taken by car to travel between two locations in the United States, disregarding traffic conditions.

  • Fuel Cost Calculator

Fuel efficiency varies from one vehicle to another. An online fuel cost calculator serves the purpose of calculating an estimated trip cost given a vehicle's mileage, distance travelled and prefered fuel type over a stipulated period of time.

How To Use A Fuel Cost Calculator?

An online fuel cost calculator helps estimate fuel cost under various transportation modes and aids in financial and budget planning. A vehicle's daily, monthly, and yearly fuel costs will automatically appear in the table. The calculator helps in understanding the per kilometre fuel cost based on the distance and mileage of a vehicle.

Users need to determine the price of petrol, diesel per unit in their area. Vehicleā€™s mileage depends on the type of fuel. One also needs to know how many kilometres (km) per unit of petrol or diesel the vehicle will achieve. This figure will be presented in kmpl (kilometres per litre) for petrol and diesel vehicles. Once you have the mileage, distance travelled and the fuel cost, the fuel expenditure can easily be calculated on a daily, monthly and yearly basis.
