Feuding Clare families who produced chainsaw during row 'not Bord Fáilte material for Ennis'

Feuding Clare families who produced chainsaw during row 'not Bord Fáilte material for Ennis'

Bernard McDonagh 'is the driving force behind the feud at this time', court told. File picture

A chainsaw was one of the weapons allegedly produced during a “horrible, unsavoury” incident last Sunday afternoon at an Ennis housing estate.

At Ennis District Court after viewing CCTV evidence of the flashpoint at Davitt Terrace, Cloughleigh at 12.30pm last Sunday afternoon, solicitor for three accused men in the case, Daragh Hassett, admitted the video “is not Bord Fáilte material for Ennis”.

On Wednesday, Mr Hassett told the court: “It is unsavoury. It is horrible and it shouldn’t have happened but my clients say they are not guilty of the charges before the court.”

Mr Hassett said the CCTV footage produced by the State doesn’t help the State case in the charges against his clients.

Mr Hassett said the footage showed one man with an “active chainsaw”, who is not one of his own clients.

Objecting to bail against the three accused, Bernard McDonagh, 55, Thomas McDonagh, 21, and Michael McDonagh, 32, all of the unofficial halting site at Kilrush Rd, Ennis, Detective Garda Noelle Bergin said a feud between two sides of the wider McDonagh family is currently "volatile".

The charges against the three McDonaghs arise from the three allegedly going to the property of cousins at Davitt Terrace, Cloughleigh, last Sunday afternoon.

Thomas McDonagh is charged with producing a slash hook during the incident while Bernard McDonagh and Michael McDonagh are each charged with producing a knife in the course of a dispute.

Thomas McDonagh is also facing three counts of alleged criminal damage.

Det Bergin said: “This is an incident which is part of an ongoing feud between two Traveller families. A number of persons arising from this feud are currently before the courts charged with serious offences.”

She said: “It is the Garda belief that tensions between both sides are extremely high”.

Det Bergin added that Bernie McDonagh is the father of the McDonaghs and alleged he “is the driving force behind the feud at this time”.

Mr Hassett said his instructions are that "there is no feud, there is nothing to row about”.

The solicitor said there are tensions around the recent death by suicide of a man in the wider McDonagh family “and about the acceptance and non-acceptance by family members about what could have been done to stop their relative from taking his own life. This will be resolved in time."

Mr Hassett said one of his clients, Michael McDonagh “lost a child recently and that has been used by his cousins to taunt him”.

He said one of the complainants against his three clients put a video on YouTube that injuries he got were self-inflicted to try to bring charges against someone else.

Mr Hassett said his clients live in an unofficial halting site that was a recent "cause celebre" in the Supreme Court where the court decided the McDonagh family should stay there.

He argued that bail could be granted to his clients with strong conditions, such as daily signing on and curfews with a cash lodgement.

However, Judge Mary Larkin refused bail to all three and remanded them in custody to re-appear in court via video link on June 8 next.

Three Appear In Court In Relation To Assault And Criminal Damage Charges

ennis traveller feud 2022

Three members of feuding traveller families today appeared in court in connection with an escalating feud between the two families.

At Ennis Courthouse, members from the Garda Armed Support unit were standing outside as a father and son from the Sherlock family and their nephew/cousin from the rival Molloy family appeared in court.

Three others remained in Garda custody today and are due to appear in court tomorrrow in connection with the feud.

In court, Insp Tom Kennedy outlined facts in relation to four alleged violent incidents that occurred on the streets of Ennis on Monday and Friday afternoons between rival family members in full view of shocked shoppers.

The families are related and in the case, Jim Sherlock (49) and son Declan Sherlock (23) of Dromard, Ennis are each accused of the criminal damage of a Ford Focus car belonging to Rosaleen Molloy on Monday at High Street Ennis.

Declan Sherlock is also accused of assaulting Sean Slattery last Friday at O’Connell Street, Ennis and assaulting Thomas Molloy at the Parnell Street Car Park in Ennis on Monday afternoon.

Jim Molloy (18) of Ballaghboy halting site, Quin Rd, Ennis is charged with assaulting Damien Sherlock last Friday afternoon at The Height in Ennis.

Judge Marie Keane refused bail to all three after hearing strong Garda objections to bail.

Det Sgt Brian Slattery said that it will be alleged that Jim Sherlock drove alleged assailants to carry out the criminal damage on the Ford Focus car when they attacked it with sticks and broke the windows of the car on a busy Ennis Street at 2.30pm on Monday afternoon.

Det Slattery said it will also be alleged that Declan Sherlock was involved “in a particularly nasty assault” when it will be alleged he used a baseball to attack Sean Slattery on O’Connell Street in Ennis at 3.30pm on Friday afternoon.

Det Slattery said: “Shoppers watched this assault and it was very frightening for them.”

Det Slattery said that the alleged assault by Jim Molloy on Damien Sherlock “was a very frightening experience for members of the public and the incident showed total disregard for anyone in the area”.

He said that “There is a history of a feud between the Molloys and Sherlocks. It has developed over past five weeks.”

Det Slattery said that it came to a height again last Friday when the alleged assault was carried out by Jim Molloy and a number of others.

Solicitor for Mr Molloy, Shíofra Hassett said that his client was attacked in Limerick prison earlier this year while on remand there and a serious threat has been made to him if he is remanded back to Limerick jail.

Jim Sherlock is a widower of nine years and said that he would relocate his five children and one four year old grand-child to Dublin is he is granted bail.

He said: “I don’t want to be part of his feud. I want nothing to do with it.”

Mr Sherlock’s son, Declan also stated that he would be relocating to Dublin if he secured bail.

He said: “I want out of this feud.”

Judge Keane said that she was refusing bail to all three stating that the feud has clearly escalated.

Judge Keane remanded all three to appear to appear via video link in court next Tuesday.

Clare County Council case versus Ennis Traveller family will be back before High Court

  • Páraic McMahon
  • February 18, 2022

*Chief Executive of Clare County Council, Pat Dowling. Photograph: Eamon Ward

A FULL HEARING in the High Court is to be held in an ongoing case between Clare County Council and an Ennis family.

At the end of January in what was a significant ruling, five Supreme Court justices ruled unanimously in favour of the McDonagh family from Ennis who had an appeal against their eviction upheld. Their case focused on their unauthorised presence on a Clare Council-owned site, having not been provided with appropriate accommodation by the Council elsewhere.

The ruling set out that it is ultimately for a Council to convince the courts in any future cases that they have fulfilled their obligations, and for the Courts to assess the proportionality of the Council’s actions.

Clare County Council had secured an injunction from the High Court requiring Bernard and Helen McDonagh, and members of their family, to immediately vacate council-owned lands at Cahercallamore, Ennis, Co Clare. The mandatory injunction, granted in 2019, was to remain in place pending the outcome of the full hearing of the dispute. The injunction was upheld on appeal by the Court of Appeal in 2020.

For several years, the McDonagh family resided as tenants of the Council in a small Traveller-specific housing development. After the destruction of their home by fire they then lived in private housing for several years, but had to leave rented accommodation when the landlord required possession for the purpose of refurbishment. In 2018, they subsequently moved to the Council owned vacant site that is the subject of this case. Clare County Council’s initial action against the McDonaghs arose out of related proceedings where the local authority sought to have the McDonagh’s vacate another site in Ennis, which they had previously resided at before it was destroyed by a fire in 2012.

Speaking at Monday’s meeting of the County Council, Chief Executive, Pat Dowling detailed that the matter will be back before the High Court. He said there is a history of litigation between the local authority and the McDonagh family over the last five years.

Dowling remarked that the family initially tried to prevent the development of social housing by trespassing on a site in Ashline in 2017 with legal action taken by the Council to stop this with the McDonagh family failing with a subsequent counter-claim. Their next location impacted on access to Ennis National School before they then moved to an “unauthorised Council site” under the flyover.

“It took us four years to get this far,” Dowling added. He said “it is only an interim application that has been heard and determined” while noting an admission from the family that they were trespassers without a planning application. “It will be argued before the High Court in a full hearing. The case has been referred back to the High Court for a full plenary hearing with oral evidence”. Proceedings have not concluded he advised elected representatives.

His statement was issued in light of motions tabled by Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) and Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF). Flynn asked for a report on the impact to the Council as a housing authority over the Supreme Court decision while Colleran Molloy sought the implications to all local authorities “granting the appeal discontinuing the injunction requiring Travellers to vacate the illegal encampment site on the Kilrush Road”.

The Chief Executive when finishing his address recommended no discussion take place on the matter with the legal proceedings still ongoing. Cllr Flynn asked that he be let have a discussion on the matter with the County Solicitor, “there are public safety issues pertinent to the case that I’d like to raise”.

Acknowledging that the matter was sub judice, Cllr Colleran Molloy said it was “very positive” that the High Court will hold a full-blown oral hearing on the matter, “hopefully the Council will prevail,” she stated.

Judge says feuding Travellers in Ennis ‘behaved like savages’ and are ‘disgrace to Travellers’ before handing out jail terms

  • Gordon Deegan
  • Published : 20:56, 15 Feb 2019

FEUDING thugs were blasted as “savages” who are a “disgrace to Travellers” by a furious judge today.

Judge Gerald Keys hit out at the men in Ennis, Co Clare before jailing three for a series of fights between the related Sherlock and Molloy families.

 Damien Sherlock at Ennis Court

Over all, he imposed jail terms that totalled 50 years and seven months on 12 members and associates of the two clans as part of four prosecutions — with most prison time suspended.

Addressing the offenders at Ennis Circuit Court, Judge Keys told them: “All of you have been a disgrace to your families — but more importantly to your fellow Travellers.”

He added: “All of you have brought great shame on your community, which seriously tests the patience of law-abiding citizens.”

Judge Keys said there is no sign of common sense prevailing in the feud.

Declan Sherlock got a three-year term

He said the feud “must stop and this court will not tolerate this ongoing criminal activity” — especially as some of those involved don’t even know what the row is about.

He hit Declan Sherlock, 23, formerly of Dromard, Ennis, with three years’ jail with one suspended for a daylight street assault on Sean Slattery on July 28, 2017.

In the fight, on Ennis’s O’Connell Street, he struck Sean ten times with a long pole while he lay on the footpath.

This was in response to his brother, Damien Sherlock, 26, being assaulted earlier that day by Thomas Molloy, 26, and James Molloy, 20, both of Ballaghboy halting site. Both Molloys were jailed for two years over this.

The Sherlock siblings’ father, James Sherlock, 50, formerly of Dromard, Ennis, was the getaway driver for the attack on Sean.

But he walked free and was given a number of suspended sentences for his role in three attacks — with his saving grace a decision to leave town and move to Leitrim.

Video captures broad daylight shooting incident in Ennis halting site as feud escalates

 11th January 2023

Gardaí are investigating after a video posted to social media appeared to show a shooting in broad daylight at a Co Clare halting site.

The video shows males getting out of a vehicle on the Beech Park halting site on the outskirts of Ennis before running towards a car and homes as a gun can be heard being discharged.

Two men then run deeper into the halting site before firing more shots and fleeing the scene. The incident on Tuesday, one in a long line of violent encounters linked to a feud in recent months, was recorded by a third person.

“Gardaí are investigating reports of a firearm being discharged in the Beech Park area of Ennis at approximately 2.45pm on Tuesday, January 10. No person was injured in the incident. No arrests have been made, investigations are ongoing,” a garda spokesperson said.

Last year gardaí increased their presence in the town as a result of a number of incidents due to feuding factions in Co Clare.

Videos of attacks on homes and cars were circulated on social media as dozens of threatening messages were sent back and forth between different groups clashing with each other in separate rows.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to come forward. They are appealing for anyone who was in the area and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to make this available to investigating gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ennis garda station on 065 6848 100.

History of Novosibirsk

Foundation of novosibirsk.

Novosibirsk is a city with a very interesting history. Unlike many other cities in Russia, it does not have a specific founder. Since the 18th century, on the left bank of the Ob, one of the largest rivers in the world, there was the village of Krivoshchekovo, where migrants from the European provinces of the Russian Empire lived. However, it did not become the basis of Novosibirsk. The city was born on the other, right, bank of the Ob, when the Trans-Siberian Railway approached it in 1893.

Originally it was just a village for the builders of a railway bridge across the Ob. It could turn out to be temporary and disappear after the completion of construction, if not for the combination of several factors that contributed to the development of trade - a large river, a railway, a flat relief convenient for building. At first, the village was named Alexandrovsky, in honor of Emperor Alexander III. For the third anniversary, it received a new name and became Novonikolaevsky, in honor of the Emperor Nicholas II.

In 1897, the first trains went across the bridge. The settlement was quickly growing. By 1898, there were already 7.8 thousand people in the village. In 1903, when the village acquired the status of a town with the name Novonikolaevsk, its population was 26 thousand people. In the 1910s, Novonikolaevsk experienced a construction boom. By 1913, the population of the city was 86 thousand people.

Novonikolaevsk, was the center of the major lines of communication, in which the navigable Ob River crossed with the Great Siberian Way and the Altai Railway. The First World War turned the city into the largest center for training troops beyond the Urals.

More Historical Facts…

Novosibirsk - the Siberian Chicago

In 1921, Novonikolaevsk received the status of the administrative center of the Novonikolaevsk Governorate. In 1925, it became the administrative center of the huge Siberian Krai - practically all the regions of Trans-Ural Russia.

The capital of the new huge region needed a new name. Here are just some of the proposed names: Krasnograd, Sibleninsk, Krasnoobsk, Sibkraisk, Sibkraigrad, Leningrad-on-Ob. On February 12, 1926, Novonikolaevsk (“a new city of Nicholas”) was renamed Novosibirsk (“a new city in Siberia”. In 1926, at the Regional Scientific Congress, it was decided to turn Novosibirsk into a “promsad” (“industrial garden”) or “city-garden”. About 120 thousand people lived in the city at that time. The city got the nickname “Siberian Chicago”.

The main elements of the renovated Siberian capital were supposed to be “social towns” - complex residential areas at factories and plants. New cadres were needed to build a new society. Novosibirsk quickly became a city of students. In the 1930s, 8 universities and 10 technical schools were opened here. The city became the Trans-Ural capital of such an architectural style as constructivism.

On July 30, 1930, due to the division of the Siberian Krai, Novosibirsk became the center of the West Siberian Krai. In 1934, a new railway bridge was built across the Ob River and the population grew to 294 thousand people. By 1939, it increased up to 406 thousand people. On September 28, 1937, the West Siberian Krai was divided into Novosibirsk Oblast with the capital in Novosibirsk and Altai Krai.

During the Second World War, the enlistment offices of Novosibirsk Oblast sent more than half a million soldiers to the front. There were 115 evacuation hospitals in the region. Almost 27% of all shells fired by the Red Army during the war were produced in Novosibirsk. Despite the fact that not a single bomb fell on the territory of Novosibirsk, the pre-war city disappeared forever. Instead of the planned residential areas/parks, industrial zones of evacuated factories appeared, a lot of buildings changed their civilian purpose to military-industrial (some of them - forever).

The evacuation radically changed the demography of Novosibirsk - people evacuated from Moscow and Leningrad brought with them a new way of life, new artistic tastes. A lot of them stayed in Novosibirsk after the war. During the war years, Novosibirsk also became the center of the musical culture of Siberia. The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater, one of the main attractions of Novosibirsk, was opened on May 12, 1945.

Novosibirsk after the Second World War

The demographic inertia of the evacuation turned the pre-war Novosibirsk into a metropolis. By 1956, its population increased to 750 thousand people. On September 2, 1962, a millionth resident of the city was born. It took Novosibirsk only 70 years to achieve this status from the moment of its foundation, which made it the youngest of all million cities.

In 1950, the construction of the Novosibirsk hydroelectric power station began; a large reservoir was created, the so-called Ob Sea. The idea of creating a Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk was implemented in 1957. About 20 kilometers south of the center of Novosibirsk, in the middle of the forest, Akademgorodok was built - a town of scientists. In 1959, Novosibirsk State University was opened.

In 1979, construction of the metro began in Novosibirsk. Opened in 1985, it became the first one in the Trans-Ural part of Russia. Today, the Novosibirsk metro has 13 stations and annually carries about 70 million passengers.

In 1990, the bridge that had given rise to the city was reconstructed. To preserve the memory of the first builders, one of its span structures was installed on the embankment of the Ob in the park “Gorodskoye Nachalo”.

The transition to a market economy led to a sharp drop in production. High-tech industries, such as radioelectronics, microelectronics, instrument making, and aircraft construction suffered especially heavy losses. In 1991-1998, industrial production in Novosibirsk decreased by more than 3 times.

In the 1990s, the economic structure of the Novosibirsk region and Novosibirsk underwent fundamental changes. The main structural change was that the production of services in the city began to exceed the production of goods, the role of industry decreased, the share of transport, trade, communications, agriculture, and a lot of branches of market services increased.

Thus, the potential points of growth of Novosibirsk reproduced on a new historical, technological, and institutional basis the initial system of its development priorities: a large transport hub in the system of transnational transport corridors, a trade, intermediary, and financial center - the center of Siberia, a large business, scientific, educational, and cultural center.

In the 21st century, Novosibirsk became the first Russian city (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) to exceed the population of 1.5 million.

Novosibirsk - Features

Novosibirsk is the most populous city in the Asian part of Russia. It is located in the southeastern part of the West Siberian Plain on both banks of the Ob River next to the Novosibirsk reservoir. The width of the Ob River within the city is 750-850 meters. The City Day of Novosibirsk is celebrated on the last Sunday of June.

The city is located in the continental climatic zone. The flatness of the territory allows both cold waves from the north and heat waves from the southwest to freely spread. That’s why both severe frosts and short-term thaws can be observed in winter. The duration of winter is 120-130 days, summer - about 90 days. The average air temperature in January is minus 16.5 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.4 degrees Celsius.

On the coat of arms of Novosibirsk you can see a schematic image of the Ob River and the bridge across it, part of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which gave rise to the city.

The economy of Novosibirsk is based on industry, trade, transport, science, and scientific services. The city is successfully developing in the absence of large resource-extracting enterprises in the region, which distinguishes it from most large cities in Siberia.

The main activities of industrial production are: production of food, computers, electronic and optical products, chemicals, vehicles and equipment, metallurgy, beverage production. Novosibirsk is one of the leading suppliers of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants and research reactors in Russia and abroad.

Novosibirsk is the largest scientific center in the Asian part of Russia. More than 100 organizations carry out research and development in this city. There are about three dozen higher educational institutions here.

It is the largest transport hub in Siberia connecting Siberia, the Far East, Central Asia with the European regions of Russia. Novosibirsk is also a river port. The city is served by Tolmachevo International Airport, the largest in terms of passenger traffic in the Asian part of Russia. The airport is located at the intersection of a large number of flights from Southeast Asia to Europe and from North America to India and Asia.

Novosibirsk was the only city in Russia located in two time zones. Since its foundation, it was growing in two parts along different banks of the Ob. And since the meridian of the hour passed right along the Ob River, there were two time zones in one city. On the left bank, the difference with Moscow was 3 hours, and on the right bank - 4 hours. At first, this did not cause much inconvenience as each half lived quite apart. In 1955, when the first road bridge across the Ob was built, the city became more connected. In 1958, Novosibirsk switched to a single time zone.

Despite its young age, Novosibirsk has 145 monuments of architecture, history, monumental art and archeology taken under state protection. 47 monuments of wooden architecture of the late 19th - early 20th centuries are of particular value. There are also over a dozen different museums in Novosibirsk.

Main Attractions of Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk Zoo - one of the largest and best zoos in Russia, where about 11,000 animals, birds, and reptiles of 770 species are kept on an area of 63 hectares in a pristine pine forest. More than 350 species are listed in the International Red Book. This zoo is visited by about one million people every year. It also hosts ecological events and festivals. Timiryazeva Street, 71/1.

Novosibirsk Theater of Opera and Ballet . Founded in 1945, it is one of the leading theaters in Russia. It occupies the largest theater building in Russia constructed in the constructivist style in 1931-1941. This unique architectural complex has the status of a cultural heritage of the Russian Federation. It is one of the symbols of Novosibirsk and probably its most recognizable building.

The main feature of the building is its huge dome with a diameter of 60 meters and a height of 35 meters. The large hall of the theater can accommodate 1,449 spectators. The theater is located on Lenin Square - the main square of Novosibirsk, where you can also find a number of interesting monuments. This theater is also known as the “Siberian Colosseum”. Krasnyy Prospekt, 36.

Novosibirsk Museum of Local Lore - one of the main museums in Novosibirsk. The historical department of the museum is located in a picturesque building of the former City Trade House (a monument of history and architecture of federal significance built in 1910).

This museum has a number of unique exhibits: a complete mammoth skeleton, collections of household and religious items of Siberian peoples collected by expeditions in the 1920s-1930s. There are also collections of numismatics, woodwork, glass, porcelain and faience, an archaeological collection, etc. Krasnyy Prospekt, 23.

Novosibirsk Art Museum . The permanent exhibition presents the following sections: icons (old Russian art), foreign art (works of Italian, French, Flemish, Dutch, Belgian, German masters), Russian art of the 18th-19th centuries (works by I. Shishkin, A. Kuindzhi, I. Repin , V. Surikov, and others), Russian art of the early 20th century, art of the Soviet period, Russian art of the late 20th century. There is a separate section devoted to the works of N. Roerich. Krasnyy Prospekt, 5.

Novosibirsk Museum of Railway Technology . This museum has a large collection of steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, carriages, which mainly operated on the railways of Western Siberia. In addition, you can see such Soviet cars as GAZ, Moskvich, ZAZ of different years of production, as well as several trucks, tractors, and all-terrain vehicles. The total length of the exhibition grounds is about 3 kilometers. It is the largest museum of this subject beyond the Urals with over 100 exhibits. Razyezdnaya Street, 54/1.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (1897-1899). Built of red brick in the neo-Byzantine style, this is one of the first stone buildings on the territory of Novosibirsk and the most beautiful church in the city. Krasnyy Prospekt, 1A.

Monument to the Laboratory Mouse . This unusual monument is located in a public garden near the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the territory of Akademgorodok. The mouse with glasses holds the knitting needles in its paws and knits a double helix of DNA.

The monument symbolizes gratitude to this animal for the fact that mankind has the opportunity to use mice to study animal genes, molecular and physical mechanisms of diseases, and the development of new drugs. Akademika Lavrent’yeva Prospekt, 10/2.

Zaeltsovsky Park - one of the oldest parks in Novosibirsk that celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2017. The park has all the conditions for a comfortable and cultural pastime: walking paved paths, rides, summer verandas and gazebos, a paintball club, an ice rink, a rope park, etc.

For history buffs, the ethnopark “Territory of Siberia” has been created, where everyone can get acquainted in detail with the culture of the indigenous peoples who lived in these places several hundred years ago. In winter, it is a great place to go skiing. There is also a children’s railway with a length of 5.3 km here. At the terminal station, you will be offered to go to the Novosibirsk Zoo, which is located nearby.

Novosibirsk Central Park - a large park in the center of Novosibirsk and the oldest park in the city. On an area of 10.5 hectares, there are summer cafes and ice cream kiosks, dozens of rides and sports equipment rental points. There is an open-air skating rink in winter. The park often hosts festivals, concerts, and tournaments. The Novosibirsk Theater of Musical Comedy is also located here. Michurina Street, 8.

The Ob River and “the Ob Sea” . The Ob is one of the world’s largest rivers, its length is more than 3,600 km. This river flows through a lot of Siberian cities. Within Novosibirsk, the river is transformed into a large reservoir, which bears the unofficial name “the Ob Sea”. The main purpose of the water reservoir is to generate electricity. Also, the shores of the “sea” are a popular recreation area for locals and city visitors.

Bishop still concerned over ennis feud.

August 19, 2010 1,135 Views

BISHOP Willie Walsh, in his final week leading the diocese, has acknowledged that he is very worried that the ongoing feud between traveller families in the Ennis area has the potential to reach the level of the feuds between members of the settled community in cities such as Limerick and Dublin.

“I’m quite concerned that the feud will escalate again. Nothing is settled by violence. Violence breeds violence. It has escalated in recent years and I’m very worried that it will escalate further and will result in very serious injury or potentially in death. We read regularly in the national media now about feuds among the settled community in the cities and how destructive they are to those involved and to the wider community. Nobody wants these matters to persist. This feud between travellers in Ennis has the potential to reach that level and I am very worried about that. Nobody in Ennis or Clare wants that. I pray that those involved will see the error of their ways, for their own sake and that of the wider community. I would ask them to consider carefully and I believe strongly that mediation can assist with this, to find another way going forward,” Bishop Walsh said. He also confirmed that he hasn’t been involved in mediating in issues between traveller families in recent times. “I previously talked to traveller families. About 10 years ago in relation to finding a location for a traveller accommodation site on the Gort Road in Ennis, a mediation process was set up to reach a consensus between travellers, residents and schools. The process helped to heal matters and that mediation process went well. That was for an agreed process and for the purpose of reaching a consensus on the location of the halting site,” he explained. The Bishop continued, “I have to say I haven’t been involved much in recent times. I was approached privately some time ago, about a month or two ago, not a direct approach by a public body. I just didn’t think I had the time to devote to it. I would have liked to have the time but time is key to a mediation process because it involves a lot of listening and when I couldn’t commit to having the time to do it, I couldn’t do it.” He added that he welcomes the appointment and use of a mediator by Ennis Town Council  to try and help to resolve ongoing issues between some travellers in the Ennis area. “The knowledge and experience of a mediator is very much needed in the matter. I certainly welcome the move and I do not question in any way money being spent for this purpose. I trust and hope that the mediation process currently underway will bring some form of peace in respect of the issues that are there. I am in no doubt about how destructive the feud has been, and is being, and I do not want it to continue, for everybody’s sake. I hope very much that the mediator manages to bring peace and understanding among those involved. It doesn’t only affect those directly involved, but the general community also, who are in fear of what may happen,” he said.
