On our day tour, we will visit all of the main sights, and if time allows, we will make a few extra stops along the way, so you can see even more of Iceland. Kerið Volcanic Crater Lake

We will first make a stop at the Kerid Crater in the Golden Circle, a volcanic crater lake that formed around 3000 years ago. It’s famous for the stark contrast in colors – maroon mineral sediment, dark lava rocks , and blueish lake water – forming a naturally eye-pleasing sight. You can also take a walk along the crater rim or follow the paved path down to the bottom of the crater to get a better view.

The origin of Kerið began almost 3000 years ago during an eruption that was said to be grand, but when the magma emptied the chamber collapsed in on itself, leaving the crater as the shape we see today.

Want to visit Golden Circle Classis

Gullfoss Waterfall, aka the Golden Falls, is a must-visit attraction of the Golden Circle tours in Iceland. It is an astonishing waterfall originating from Iceland’s second-largest glacier  Langjökull . Its roaring cascade first runs down a gradual slope for 11 meters (36.01 ft) and then tumbles down deep into the canyon with a 21-meter (68.9 ft) magnificent, wide drop, creating impressive, beautiful mist to splash up in the air, reflecting a giant rainbow in the sunlight.

Well-paved pathways are available with different viewpoints to admire the Gullfoss waterfall. The first viewpoint is the upper deck next to the visitor center, from which you have a panoramic view of the waterfall in its entirety.

Following the path, you can walk down to the lower deck, to view another side of the thunderous drop that vanishes into the depth of the earth. Then you can see the first plunge of the waterfall from a closer distance on the lower deck. Please be aware that the path can be closed if it’s icy and conditions are not ideal.

Next up, we head out to the dynamic geothermal area Geysir, which is named after the original geyser, the  Great Geysir , which is no longer active. The area is filled with steam vents, bubbling pits, and sizzling ponds, with multicolored patches dotted here and there. The main show of the site is the active  Strokkur Geyser  that gushes 20 meters up in the air every 5 to 10 minutes. The spectacular, lively sight is the highlight of the Geysir geothermal field.

Another feature of the area is the bubbling hot springs and the steamy muddy fields, creating a sulfuric smell. The geysers create a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Iceland’s wonder.

There’s a visitor center close by, selling souvenirs, and local products, and offering many lunch options.

As one of the most famous sites and must-visits in Iceland, Thingvellir National Park has great significance in both the history and geology of Iceland. In 930 AD, the world’s first parliament was established here in Thingvellir by Vikings, making it the oldest parliament. Most surprisingly the parliament is still active and fully functioning!

Thingvellir sits right on the only visible section of the  Mid-Atlantic Ridge , which is mostly submerged in the ocean. As you walk along the pathway, you are walking in between the rift valley between two diverging tectonic plates that are home to North America  and  Eurasia , respectively.

Thingvellir National Park is home to a diverse range of scenery which includes the  Öxaráfoss waterfall ,  Almannagjá gorge ,  Hakið panoramic viewpoint ,  Silfra Fissure,  and the  Þingvallakirkja Church . The water is crystal clear at Thingvellir as the meltwater from  Langjökull glacier  seeps through the underground lava field, considered to be the best natural filter in the world.

A national treasure, Þingvellir is a great place to learn about Iceland’s history and heritage, especially if you are interested in Vikings, and how the laws of the land came about. In 2004, Þingvellir National Park was listed as one of the  UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

After our eventful day exploring the sights of Iceland, we will begin our drive back to Reykjavik. Along the way, you will see some picturesque scenery over the course of the 45-minute drive back to your pick-up point.

What can I say? It was fantastic the whole way through. We were picked up on time, the minibus was comfortable, our guide was fun and informative. She didn't just give us facts, she told us interesting stories about Icelandic culture.. In one day, we saw a volcano, a waterfall, a geyser and a national park. What a fun day! Fascinating 8 hour tour of several beautiful Icelandic sights. This tour is a small group tour of no more than about 19 people. Some other tours have buses carrying 40 - 50 people. There were frequent stops, so you’re only driving for about 45 minutes at most between stops. Plenty of time provided to explore at each stop. Our guide was Baldwin, the best tour guide during our time in Iceland. He explained each sight we visited, and welcomed questions from the group. The experience was great. 11.30 Geysir Geothermal Area

The Haukadalur Valley is known for its geothermal activity, with an erupting geyser, bubbling mud pots, and steam vents scattered throughout the landscape.

The word “geyser” comes from the now mostly dormant Geysir, but the site is also named after it. Geysir would hurl boiling water and erupt almost 70 m (230 ft) into the air, but it has been years since it erupted last. It used to erupt regularly but stopped after a series of earthquakes. Instead, you can see its brother Strokkur erupt every few minutes. It isn’t as large as Geysir, but its eruptions can reach up to 30 m (98 ft).

Geysir Geothermal Area is surrounded by stunning scenery, with lush green hills, mountains, and colorful geothermal pools.

There is a vast tourist center with a good quality souvenir shop, many restrooms, and tasty food in a modern, Nordic-vibe restaurant.

12.40 Gullfoss Waterfall

Situated on the Hvítá River (White River), Gullfoss is located in the beautiful and scenic Hvítárgljúfur Canyon. The waterfall is formed as the river cascades down in two stages, creating a stunning double-tiered drop. The first drop is approximately 11 meters (36 feet) high, while the second plunges down 21 meters (69 feet) into a narrow canyon, creating a spectacular sight for anyone lucky enough to witness it.

14.00 Friðheimar Tomato Greenhouse

Enjoy a unique food experience at Friðheimar Greenhouse restaurant, with tomatoes growing all around! Tomato soup, fresh-baked bread, tomato beer, and other goodies are served in a charming environment among the plants.

As the name suggests, tomatoes are grown all year round despite Iceland’s long dark winters. They use artificial lighting in greenhouses to do that. Visitors can enjoy a taste of their crop; many agree you will get the best tomato soup you will ever taste there!

The farm grows about 370 tonnes of vegetables yearly (primarily tomatoes and cucumbers).

16.00 Kerið Crater

Kerið Crater is a part of the larger Western Volcanic Zone – it was formed around 3,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption, leaving behind a massive caldera with a depth of about 55 meters (180 feet) and a diameter of approximately 270 meters (890 feet).

What makes Kerið so unique and captivating is the vivid colors of the rocks and surrounding vegetation. The slopes of the crater display vibrant shades of red, russet, and deep browns, creating a picturesque contrast against the azure blue water that has collected at the bottom. The changing colors of the surrounding vegetation throughout the seasons further accentuate the ever-evolving nature of this unique geological site.

Kerið is also home to a rich ecosystem, with various plant species finding a niche within its volcanic walls. Mosses, lichens, and hardy grasses cling to the rocks, creating a burst of green amidst the barren, rocky landscape.

As you set foot on Reynisfjara, you are immediately struck by the contrast between the dark volcanic sand and the crashing waves of the North Atlantic Ocean. The black sand, formed from volcanic lava, creates a striking and otherworldly landscape, unlike any other beach you may have visited.

15.00 Vík í Mýrdal

Not as well-known as its neighboring waterfall, Gljúfrabúi has a unique charm that attracts adventurous visitors from around the world.

One of the main features that sets Gljúfrabúi apart is that it is partially hidden behind a large cliff, making it somewhat of a hidden gem. Visitors must first pass through a narrow opening in the rocks to reach this stunning cascade, almost like entering a secret chamber.

Once inside, they are greeted by the magnificent sight of Gljúfrabúi, surrounded by towering moss-covered cliffs.

The waterfall tumbles down from around 40 meters (131 feet), creating a breathtaking sight as the water cascades into a small pool below. Stephan was simply fantastic! Incredibly thoughtful, attentive and insightful about all things Iceland (and beyond!) - our day was full of stunningly beautiful sights, with Stephan supplying the perfect amount of knowledge to ensure we got the most from our experience. Tours By Locals did not disappoint! Valthor is an awesome guide! He picked up part of our group that was already in town and then picked the rest of us up from the airport as we arrived. He talked about Iceland as we drove as well as answered question and explained the different places we visited. The place he picked for lunch was excellent and he made sure they had space for our large group. He was great to work with in coordinating a large group, multiple pick ups and what we wanted to see. Sigga took our family and friends group of 7 on a day-long custom south coast tour in late December 2023. We absolutely loved it! We saw black sand beaches and beautiful waterfalls, and had a nice lunch stop along the way. Sigga is smart, kind, efficient, extremely funny and kept us laughing with stories of Icelandic life and culture. Her knowledge of natural history is superb. I couldn't recommend her more highly, and will absolutely sign up for another tour with her on our next trip to Iceland!

We had Friendly talkative guide with a very comfortable Mercedes Van who was courteous n flexible- the tour itself was fantastic n time management was great - a lot of memorable experiences n mind blowing sights were thrown in - the crystal cave was an add on experience by a separate local tour operator but that an extremely challenging glacier hiking experience so less than 12 years n more than 60 need to be for-warned from participating. Get ready to be overwhelmed to a cacaphony of sights n weather experiences n unpredictability . Unfortunately we did not see the aurora due to cloudy skies but had an amazing time with once in a life time experience of walking in a blizzard, hiking on a glacier n entering an icy cave with sub zero temperatures n awesome sights of beautiful topography- topped with very friendly n cheerful people who love to party till late. Must be on every globe trotters bucket list - now planning to visit again but in Summer with longer days n different scenery experiences

Escape the south coast crowds for the natural wonders of North Iceland’s Diamond Circle

I celand has been something of a victim of its own beauty. Every day you’ll spot convoys of minibuses, coaches and hire cars trundling along the Golden Circle, with tourists taking whirlwind trips into the ‘wild’ from Reykjavik . At times, you’re more likely to be poked in the eye with a selfie stick at Reynisfjara Beach than encounter a puffin. Or trip over a tripod at the mighty Stokkur geyser than marvel, wide-eyed at the eruption.

Like other tourist favourites – Amsterdam , Bali, Venice and Tenerife, to name just a few – Iceland is feeling the strain of overtourism . But it is possible to escape the well-trodden tourist trail if you venture up to the island’s lesser-known, more remote north. Outside the town of Akureyri, a sightseeing circle of natural wonders dubbed the ‘Diamond Circle’ is an awe-inspiring alternative to the Golden Circle.

Tourism in Iceland boomed in the 2000s as tourists became ever-more aware of the stunning natural beauty of the island. The 2008 financial crisis actually helped this growth as a weakened krona made trips to Iceland more affordable. Shortly after in 2010, the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull made headlines, once again opening the world’s eyes to the glacier-capped landscapes (while also causing havoc to European air travel). These endless snowy surfaces of vast ice caps, towering waterfalls and craggy volcanic plateaus also provided the fantasy backdrop to Game of Thrones , attracting hordes of ‘set-jetters’ to the tiny island. Low-cost airlines like WOW and EasyJet began routes to Keflavik Airport in the south and it wasn’t long before the yearly number of tourists peaked far beyond the population of Iceland.

In 2023, the first international flights started to arrive Akureyri (including direct EasyJet flights from Gatwick), the quiet fjordal ‘Capital of North Iceland’. Previously it would have taken a tiny twin-prop plane, a five-hour drive or an eight-hour bus journey to reach this region from Reykjavik. This region is still relatively untrodden, but it won’t be long before those drawn to Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes find their way to the north.

Before the mini-buses turn into coachloads, I decided to make my base in Akureyri and spend a day following the route of the Diamond Circle, taking in thundering waterfalls, geothermal baths, a sprawling lake in the lava plains, and one of the prettiest fishing villages on the island.

There aren’t many airports in the world within walking distance of a city centre, but Akureyri is one of them. It’s just a five-minute drive, but I opted for the pleasant 20-minute walk along the fjord-side pathway to the handful of hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments in the compact centre.

An imposingly grey, Brutalist hilltop church, designed by the same architect as the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik, presides over the city, and the Hofn (harbour) building is as sleek and black-glassed as the capital’s Harpa Concert Hall. It would be easy – and lazy – to describe Akureyri as ‘Reykjavik in miniature’. Guerilla knitted bin covers with bulging eyes, love hearts for stop signs at traffic lights and vibrant murals tell me the artistic community is strong here. Spending a day or two in the hillside Arctic Botanic Gardens and wandering the forest pathways of Kjarnaskogur Forest Park in a famously tree-sparse Iceland is a delight. Perhaps it’s the cocooning mountains or the tiny population, but Akureyri feels quiet.

There’s plenty to see in Iceland’s northern wilderness and following the 250km route of the Diamond Circle from Akureyri means it’s possible to hit the highlights in a single day. The easiest (and cheapest) way to experience the Diamond Circle is by hiring a car and driving yourself. The limited number of roads in North Iceland means taking a wrong turn is rare. If, like me, driving isn’t your thing, tour companies run day trips around the Diamond Circle thanks to a demand for shore excursions from the Greenland and Arctic cruise ships that dock in Akureyri Harbour.

The route follows Route One east for half an hour until I hit the first awe-inspiring scene: Godafoss Waterfall. These horseshoe-shaped falls are some of the most powerful in Iceland and could give the Golden Circle’s Gulfoss a run for their money. Walking paths snake across the moss-green expanse and I get close enough to the falls to feel the mist on my face. Next, the Diamond Circle passes the expanse of Lake Myvatn, sparkling teal against the volcanic landscape. Lake Myvatn is home to a geothermal lagoon just as milky blue and ethereal-looking as the south’s famous Blue Lagoon. Like its southern sister, Myvatn Nature Baths are geothermally heated pools created by run-off from a nearby geothermal power station. The silica-rich water is a natural by-product and perfectly safe to bathe in. The minerals in the baths leave skin feeling baby-soft and are said to have healing properties for conditions like psoriasis.

Emerging soft and squishy-feeling from Myvatn Nature Baths, it’s just a couple of minutes’ drive to the ochre plains of the Hverir area of geothermal activity. With bubbling mud pots and yellow, sulphur-stained hills, it feels like I’ve landed on another planet. Walkways wind between each geyser and boiling hot pool and, unlike at Geysir in South Iceland, I don’t have to wait long for the smattering of visitors to dissipate for a people-free shot of this ethereal landscape.

Some may recognise Dettifoss waterfall from the opening scenes of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus . Cubic tonnes of grey and white water flow over a chasm as the Jokulsa a Fjollum River cuts through the landscape. From afar, human figures are dwarfed by the mighty cascade. Forty-five minutes further along the route, Asbyrgi Canyon is a vast, horseshoe-shaped glacial canyon shaped by millennia of slow ice melt. Meaning ‘shelter of the Gods’, Viking legend has it that Asbyrgi is the hoofprint of Sleipnir, the Norse god Odin’s trusty, eight-legged steed.

Just under an hour’s drive from Asbyrgi, the final stop on the Diamond Circle is the pretty fishing village of Husavik. The shamble of wooden buildings on the waterfront prompts an endless loop of Ja Ja Ding Dong to start up in my mind – this was the filming location used as Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams’ hometown in Netflix’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga . Boats putter out into the wild North Atlantic where minke and humpback whales frolic and breach the waves. You might even spot a majestic orca or two in the right season (April and May). Husavik is a great place to spend a night outside of Akureyri, affording you enough time to embark on a whale-watching trip. A lifelong fan of the camp spectacle, I opt to spend my time here at the Eurovision Museum — showcasing Iceland’s glorious history of weird and wacky song contest entries.

My day on the Diamond Circle ends back in Akureyri. With the airport so close to town I can just make out the hum of an aeroplane engine echoing off the white-tipped hills. Wheels hit the tarmac of the runway that appears to float on the fjord. I imagine passengers taking in that first breath of fresh, near-Arctic air as they disembark. Now’s the time to experience this northern outpost before the selfie sticks truly take over.

How to get there

EasyJet operates direct weekly flights from Gatwick to Akureyri Airport from £85 return between October and March. Flight time is around three hours 30 minutes.

Alternatively, EasyJet, Wizz Air, Jet2, IcelandAir and British Airways all fly direct from across the UK to Keflavik Airport and there are several daily flights from Reykjavik domestic airport to Akureyri. Hiring a car is the best way to get around North Iceland and there are a number of car hire outfits in Akureyri, or you can drive from Reykjavik. The drive takes around five hours.

Where to stay

Hotel Akureyri is split across four townhouses in downtown Akureyri and radiates sleek sophistication from low-lit lounges. Its NORTH restaurant is a fine dining affair with a tasting menu curated by Iceland’s only chef with a Michelin star.

Despite a small population (approximately 120,000, with just over 200,000 in the Greater Reykjavík area), it is a vibrant city that draws an ever-increasing number of visitors every year. It is the financial, cultural, and political center of Iceland, and has a reputation for being one of the cleanest and safest cities in the world.

The city of Reykjavík is located in southwest Iceland by Faxaflói Bay. Throughout the ages, the landscape has been shaped by glaciers, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions and the area is geothermal; after all, its name translates to ‘Smoky Bay’.

Much of the current city area was subglacial during the Ice Age, with the glacier reaching as far as the Álftanes peninsula, while other areas lay under the sea.  After the end of the Ice Age, the land rose as the glaciers drifted away, and it began to take on its present form.

The coastline of Reykjavík is set with peninsulas, coves, straits, and islands, most notably the island of Viðey , and seabirds and whales frequent the shores. The mountain ring as seen from the shore is particularly beautiful.

Mount Esjan is the highest mountain in the vicinity of Reykjavík and the most distinctive feature of the coastline. This majestic summit is also highly popular amongst hikers and climbers. Other notable mountains that can be seen from the seaside are Akrafjall and Skarðsheiði.

On clear days, one may even see as far as the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier , at the end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula .

The largest river to run through the city is Elliðaá in Elliðaárdalur valley, which is also one of Iceland’s best rivers for salmon fishing.

Transportation

There are no trains or trams in Iceland, but most people travel by car. The city also operates a bus system. There are two major harbors in town, the old harbor in the center and Sundahöfn in the east.

The domestic Reykjavík Airport is located at Vatnsmýrin, not far from the city center and close to the hill Öskjuhlíð and the restaurant, vantage point, and exhibition center Perlan. The international Keflavík Airport at Miðnesheiði heath then lies around 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city.

Cars, jeeps, and bicycles can be readily rented in the city and many organized tours are also being offered. It is, however, quite easy to walk between the major sites.

The local arts scene is strong in Iceland, with annual events and festivals , and many of the artists from which have hit the international stage.

Major events taking place in Reykjavík include Iceland Airwaves, Reykjavík Pride, RIFF (The Reykjavík International Film Festival), The Reykjavík Literature Festival, Culture Night, the Reykjavík Arts Festival, Food & Fun, the Reykjavík Fashion Festival, and the Sónar music festival.

Amongst the famous people from Reykjavík are musicians like Björk Guðmundsdóttir and Sigur Rós , and writers Halldór Laxness (born on the main street, Laugavegur ) and Arnaldur Indriðason.

Those eager to soak up the local culture should visit the city’s many museums , exhibitions, and galleries , and  check out live music  at the cafés, bars, and concert venues dotted around. You could look at the programs of what’s on at the Harpa music hall or the theatres, or else plan a few hours at the lighthouse at Grótta , the shopping street of Laugavegur, or the old harbor and the flea market.

You could even book a bird- and whale-watching tour or a visit to Viðey island. Ther possibilities are endless.

Make sure to visit the public square of Austurvöllur, one of the city’s most popular gathering places, where you’ll also find the national parliament, the Alþingi, as well as the state church, a statue of independence hero Jón Sigurðsson, cafés, bars, and restaurants.

Austurvöllur was central in the protests following the banking collapse of 2008, along with Lækjargata, home to the House of Government. You are also not likely to miss the great church of Hallgrímskirkja that towers over the city from the hill of Skólavörðuholt, from which you’ll get a great view of the city.

Try a walk by the city pond, Tjörnin , to greet the many birds that frequent the area and to visit the city hall, stationed by its banks. A beautiful park lies by the pond, ideal for a nice walk, and sometimes concerts get held there.

Further off is the campus of the University of Iceland, the Nordic house, and the Vatnsmýrin wetland, a particularly pleasant place, but be mindful to not disturb the wildlife thereby keeping to the pathways.

For a nice swim on a warm day, we particularly recommend Nauthólsvík beach, which is heated with geothermal water. Those who love a dip should also visit the Laugardalur valley , home to one of the city’s best swimming pools, which sits a short walk away from Ásmundarsafn gallery, a beautiful botanical garden, and a domestic zoo.

A walk by the Ægissíða beach, with its old fishing sheds, in the western part of Reykjavík also holds a particular charm. From there, you can see all the way to the president’s house at Bessastaðir, which is also a historical site in its own right, having been the educational center of Iceland for centuries. 

Another place that offers one of the city’s best views is Perlan , up on Öskjuhlíð hill. The hill itself is a popular place to spend a few hours, with over 176,000 trees and great opportunities for walking and cycling. Perlan also has an observation deck with great views, a café, and an exhibition center.

Furthermore, the city is a short drive from many of Iceland’s major attractions, most famously the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon . In close vicinity, you’ll also find the Heiðmörk preservation area , a favorite local site of the people of Reykjavík, as well as the Blue Mountains , one of Iceland’s best skiing venues.
