Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage , alternatively known as Ice Breaker iOS (when it was going to only be on the iOS platform), is a puzzle physics game released for iOS devices on June 20, 2013 [2] and released for Android on Google Play on May 7th 2014 with an Amazon Appstore release on June 12th 2014. [3] The game's iOS version was published by Rovio. [4] Icebreaker A Viking Voyage is the fourth installment of the Ice Breaker series , retaining its core gameplay.

On May 14, 2013 , Nitrome published an article, where Rovio , a Finnish entertainment company, announced that they were going to help Nitrome publish their iOS game, Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage, by featuring it in their new mobile game publishing initiative, Rovio Stars.

The game's Amazon Appstore release was delayed due to issues with that particular app store [5] . Nitrome has not declined the possibility of porting to the game to other devices.

Hammerfest [ ]

Ice Breaker: A Viking Voyage begins with Icebreaker, the main character, who wishes to be like his idol, the Cutting Master. Icebreaker then joins the annual Hammerfest Icebreaking Contest created by the Village Chief, a person who will turn the winner of the contest into a 'professional' icebreaker. When the contest begins, Icebreaker gets his first chance to meet his idol.

Proving that Icebreaker was able to complete the contest, the Village Chief gathered other Vikings and The Cutting Master to his ceremony taking place at the dock's windmill, awarding Icebreaker his trophy of completing the contest. As the village chief went into the windmill to get Icebreaker's trophy, a strong snowy wind blew the Vikings off the dock and towards other places, like Troll Marsh and Under Dwell. Icebreaker grabbed tightly onto his hammer, rooting him onto the ground so he does not get blown away. By the time the village chief came out of the windmill, he saw that all Vikings except Icebreaker was left. The village chief then chose Icebreaker to save the Vikings blown away by the wind, starting his quest of the game.

Troll Marsh [ ]

As the quest goes on, Icebreaker will stumble into different kinds of obstacles, such as side quests and toll gates. Upon reaching various toll gates owned by the Gate Keeper, he demands a fee for letting players into different levels.

Under Dwell [ ]

The Viking arrives at Under Dwell in order to locate more of his fellow vikings. The quest continues as Icebreaker goes through more obstacles and side quests. He also meets new characters, such as the Skull and the Blacksmith . The Gate Keeper is also in the Under Dwell, where he continues to charge Icebreaker for passage to additional levels.

After escaping Under Dwell, the Icebreaker gets eaten by the Kraken. In order to escape, him and the vikings have to navigate through the Kraken and attempt to find an exit. Along the way, characters that the Icebreaker had met previously, such as the Gate Keeper, the Skull and the Blacksmith, are also encountered inside the Kraken.

Gameplay [ ]

The objective of each level of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage is to rescue all the Vikings by safely bringing them back to the Drakkar . Scattered throughout levels are coins , which can be paid to a Gate Keeper on the overworld map in order to access other levels.

Some levels contain certain interactive objects that appear only in that level - called "Set Pieces". Along with levels mostly comprising of ice, the player has to make use of other objects in the level in order to get the Vikings safely to the Drakkar. Each level of Icebreaker contains a par number. If the player completes the level with a certain number of cuts that is equal or less than the par number, they achieve par, pars going towards accessing new levels in the Hammerfest level pack.

Level navigation [ ]

Full Icebreaker iOS map

The full map from the second pack.

Level selection will be done on an explorable map, with a boat icon as a marker for the player's selection. [7] Tapping a location on the map causes the boat to make its way towards the selected location. Tapping the same area or the "Play" button initiates the start of the level. When a level is accessed, the name of the level is displayed along with a few indicators below.

The map is designed to be integrated into the Icebreaker gaming experience, based off map systems from 16-bit platformers such as the Super Mario Games. [8]

Completion [ ]

If a level is locked, its icon blends in with the background of the map as a drawing. It is coloured in only when the player completes the level corresponding to that icon.

Completion of a level unlocks the level on the current path that comes after the completed level. Some paths of the map split into two separate paths that will unlock two levels simultaneously.

Completing sidequests gives a golden puzzle piece, granting access to another part of the map that is attached to that level. This part of the map is only accessible through the completion of this part of the sidequest.

Level packs [ ]

Nitrome revealed in their first Developer Diary that Ice Breaker iOS/Android will consists of level packs, each pack containing levels for the player to play. Three packs were included with the first release of the game, with more free [9] level packs to come.

When a level is selected, the screen will transition to show the name of the level and its "indicators".

There are currently four available level packs, these being:

  • Troll Marsh
  • Under Dwell

Sidequests [ ]

Some levels have multiple objectives, called sidequests. These levels will not only have the objective of getting the Vikings back to a longboat, but also secondary objectives, such as also getting a Goat Herder's lost goats back to the Goat Herder's longboat. Completing the sidequest is not necessary to proceed to the next level, however, a golden puzzle piece will be awarded if the sidequest's alternate objective (the actual sidequest) is completed. This golden puzzle piece will only be kept if the player completes the level's sidequest and regular objective (rescue all vikings).

Some levels themselves are sidequests, though they are not presented on the map with this title. The only way the player would be able to complete the "sidequest" is to experiment with the game's given environment and "[solve] puzzles that might not initially be apparent" [10]

Achievements [ ]

Nitrome announced on August 7 2013 that achievements would soon be added to Icebreaker A Viking Voyage. Achievements are earned by completing challenges set by a new character, the Watcher . The watcher sets challenges by placing sign posts that are scattered throughout the levels. The signs have a balloon on them and, when sliced, will reveal a ringing bell and a new challenge. This system can be used across multiple levels, or in one level alone.

The achievements will be recorded in Game Center (iOS) or Google Play Games (Android), but they are also integrated into the game. This means they will still function even if Game Center or Google Play Games is not used. The achievements will be recorded in the game by the Watcher, who operates an airship the player can visit at any time during the game and check on the list of achievements they have earned and ones they have not yet earned.

Game components [ ]

Set pieces [ ].

Set Pieces are placed within levels as a sometimes crucial part of the game. These are essentially a type of interactive object designed for use in a single level.

Due to the word choice, there was some misunderstanding of the words' definition. [11] Nitrome said that in the fourth update, set pieces demonstrate their ability to make puzzles more engaging to players with the use of graphics designed specifically for each stage.

Ibsc-boss

The head of the Mountain Troll vomiting out liquid

Icebreaker A Viking Voyage will feature bosses found at the end of each map pack. Bosses will appear in a level, and have to be defeated in order to complete the level, as the level is usually configured in such a way that the rescue of a Viking is tied to the defeat of the boss.

The Mountain Troll is the boss of Troll Marsh , the Serpent is the boss of Under Dwell , and the Brain is the boss of Kraken .

God Powers [ ]

God Powers are a premium feature of Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage that allows the player to manipulate levels in unnatural way. They can be bought as an in-app purchase from the Shopkeeper with monetary value. Currently, three gods powers are known: Finger of the Gods , Magnet of the Gods , and Gravity of the Gods .

Interactive objects [ ]

This is a list of all the currently known interactive objects in Icebreaker A Viking Voyage.

  • Troll snot - an object that debuts in Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage. Troll snot is a slimy object that attaches itself to ice. Ice that passes this will cause a gooey strand of the snot to attach to the ice, this strand being able to be cut
  • Cannons - objects that fire spherical objects that come in contact with it - including Vikings. Two types of cannons exist, although it isn't apparent what is different between the two
  • Chains - holds on to objects
  • Goats - does absolutely nothing, but dies if exposed to hazardous objects. Goats can be returned to the Goat Herder 's Longboat in order to complete a sidequest
  • Crows - holds up objects
  • Gondolas - objects for a Viking to sit in. These structures are sometimes used by the player for traversal, and sometimes held up by crows
  • Ice bombs - explode when cut, can kill Trolls and destroy some structures
  • Pressurized stone - causes actions proportional to how much weight is on the stone
  • Chicken eggs - although probably no use to the player, chicken eggs will kill Trolls upon impacting them

Hazards [ ]

This is a list of known hazards in Ice Breaker: A Viking Voyage.

  • Fist blocks - spiked blocks that punch down and can kill Vikings via this move. Fist blocks are operated by chains
  • Runes - deadly ground that kills a Viking on contact
  • Giant head - giant faces cut out of rocks that are capable of opening their mouths.
  • Spiked objects - objects that have spikes on them. These objects are harmful to the player and kill a Viking on contact.

Enemies [ ]

  • Trolls - stationary enemies that kill Vikings on contact. Trolls can be killed via being caught in the blast of an ice bomb, crushed to death, or by chicken eggs
  • Cave Trolls - Enemies with the ability to move and fly

In app purchases [ ]

There are two types of in app purchases: God Powers and early level pack unlocks, which cost money outside of the game. God Powers can either be bought in a single pack with a certain number of one type of God Power to use, or in a pack with a certain number of all three god powers.

In order for all Nitromians to test out the God Powers, there is a level in the game for each God Power where the player is given a free God Power to use in the level. [12]

Early level pack unlocks allow the player to unlock a level pack before completing the last level of the previous pack.

Game versions [ ]

Nitrome released two versions of Icebrekaer A Viking Voyage: an iOS version (which has two versions) and an Android version.

Nitrome has denied [13] the possibility of making a free version of the game that had fewer levels [14] and just ads [14] , explaining the negative impact this would have on paid downloads [15] and the high volume of downloads necessary to make a profit from the in-game ads. [14]

The iOS version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was the version that Nitrome began developing the game for. This version was released on June 20th 2013, and was originally released in two versions: a regular version, and an HD version. Achievements for the game are connected to Game Center.

The regular version is the regular version of the game, while the HD contains several added benefits unrelated to gameplay. The HD version was later made the game's universal version.

iPhone version [ ]

The iPhone version, previously the regular version of the game, was made for iPhones and iPod Touchs and is compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and also and iPod Touch 5th Generation, iPod Touch 4th Generation, and iPod Touch 3rd Generation.

The iPhone version of the game contains the full game with no special changes. Currently, even though a universal version exists, the iPhone-only version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage is still present completely for compatibility with updates, as removing the iPhone-only version would result in purchasers of this version not getting any free updates. [16]

Universal version [ ]

The Universal version of the game, previously referred to as the HD version, was initially created for iPads, compatible with iPad 1, iPad 2, and the New iPad [17] , though it was later made the Universal version of the Icebreaker A Viking Voyage app.

This version contains more detailed sprites, no borders [18] , the ability to transfer the game to other iOS devices along with its saves [19] , and is priced higher.

When the game was first released on June 20 2013, a regular version (now the iPhone version) and HD version (meant for iPads) was released. On April 8th, 2014, Nitrome updated the HD version with Universal compatibility [20] , allowing the game to be playable on both iPhone and iPad devices [16] . Along with this, the HD version had compatibility added that allowed for it to transfer it saves to other iOS devices.

Updates [ ]

Version 1.0.0 [ ].

Version 1.0 is the first version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage, this version released on June 20th 2013 (the day the game was released for iPhone). This version contains the game's first three maps ( Hammerfest , Troll Marsh , and Under Dwell ), and 95 levels.

Version 1.1.0 [ ]

Released on October 15th 2013, this version adds Achievements to the game. Along with this, during start of level or end of level dialogue, the skip button completely skips all dialogue for that part of the level.

Version 1.2.0 [ ]

This version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was released on May 7th 2014. Released in this update was the Kraken level pack, eight avatars which can be unlocked in the player's Nitrome account , and bug fixes. Cloud saving was also added, but only for the HD version. [21]

Version 1.2.1 [ ]

This version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was released on June 2nd 2014. The update fixed an issue which prevented the game from running on iOS 5.1 with other minor bug fixes.

Version 1.3.0 [ ]

This version saw a release on September 25th 2014. This updates rewards players with free God Powers daily, as an added thank you for downloading the game. Also, for those who downloaded the game when it was free for Apple's Free App of the week , ads are displayed.

Along with this, a few minor adjustments were made to the game. One of these adjustments was for Kraken level 3 Caviar , where the par limit was increased from 2 cuts to 3 due to complaints from many Nitromians regarding the precision required to to get par, which was in some cases impossible to get on some iPhones due to the size of the screen. [22]

Version 1.3.1 [ ]

Released on May 20th, 2015, for the Universal version only, this update removes ads for those who downloaded the game when it was Free App of the Week , fixes iCloud saving, and adds 64bit support for the latest iOS devices.

Android [ ]

The Android version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage is a port of the iOS version , and was released on the Google Play store on May 7th, 2014, and on the Amazon Appstore on June 12th 2014, with a Canadian release on June 13th, 2014. The game's achievements for the Google Play version are connected to Google Play Games.

Eight Icebreaker related avatars were included in the Kraken pack update on May 7, 2014 as an appreciation gift to fans who have purchased the game. An option to receive the avatars is on the main navigation screen after the Kraken option. This icon shows a Viking avatar emerging from a pink gift box. By selecting the icon, the device's browser will load, displaying a screen with the profiles module. The user can then log into their account to receive the eight avatars. Only users with access to the app can obtain the avatars. [29]

App price [ ]

Regular price [ ].

The release of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage for Android on May 7th was celebrated with the game being put on sale for an undetermined amount of time, the game's price being $0.99 US /£0.69. This sale was done so that Nitrome would appear on charts that track app sales and for people to impulse buy [30] . The very next day, Nitrome put the iOS HD version on sale as well, the app's price dropping to $1.99 US /£1.49. The Amazon Appstore version was also put on sale.

On September 29th, 2015, the game's was put on sale again and available for $0.99 US /£0.79, but only via App Zapp [31] .

The special announcement

On June 20th 2013, Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was released for iOS. Nitrome also created their first special announcement to accompany the release.

SpecialAnnouncement2

The pop up image

The Android version was released on May 7th 2014, and was celebrated with the release of the Kraken skin . Along with this, a pop up image very similar to the one in the iOS version appeared for those who accessed Nitrome.com . This image remained mostly the same as the iOS version, only with art from the Kraken level pack, links to the game's Google Play and Amazon Appstore page, and a slightly green coloured ribbon and medal.

To celebrate the game's Android release, Nitrome put the Android version on sale for $0.99 US instead of the regular price of $2.99. Due to technical problems with the Amazon Appstore, the Amazon Appstore release was delayed. [5] Similar to the days leading up the iOS release, the upper left advertisement spot of the site sometimes displayed an advertisement that featured the Android robot, with a number stating how many days are left until the game is released.

5 days left ad

The Amazon Appstore version was released on June 12th 2014, and despite this release of the heavily delayed Kindle version, there was no update whatsoever from Nitrome about its release.

Differences from the Flash series [ ]

Nitrome revealed in Update 6 on the Ice Breaker iOS website the transitions they had to make from the flash series to the mobile Icebreaker game. Changes include:

  • The ice breaker in Icebreaker A Viking Voyage holding the hammer end in his left hand instead of in his right hand
  • The noticeable difference in graphics, mainly due to Martin Wörister handling the game's graphics instead of Markus Heinel
  • Sprites given more detail, such as the helmet of certain Vikings appearing more shiny
  • The classic Rat being replaced with a Troll
  • The addition of more background objects
  • The game's levels navigated via a map instead of a level select screen
  • A Viking Voyage features green water instead of the blue water found in the flash Ice Breaker series
  • Hazards and objects are given new appearances

Graphics [ ]

In terms of graphics, Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage features graphics superior to that of regular Nitrome games.

Resolution [ ]

As covered in update 3 , the resolution of the game differs from Apple tablet used. iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 4th Generation, iPad 1, iPad 2, and iPad 3 all have retina display.

Older iPhones will not support retina display, and neither will the older iPhone 3S and iPhone 3rd Generation.

The iPhone's with retina display (iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPod Touch 4th Generation, iPod Touch 5th Generation [33] , iPad 1, iPad 2, and iPad 3 [34] ) will display detailed sprites for characters and images, and shows sprites at 1 to 1 pixel ratio. The iPad's considerably larger screen allows for more of the screen to be seen.

The game's levels are viewed in landscape mode when played on the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5 [35] .

The iPhone's lacking retina display (older iPhones, iPhone 3s and iPhone 3rd Generation) will show the game with the less detailed sprites than the retina supporting versions (sprites such as scenery, characters, etc.). These sprites will be scaled down for the non-retina iPhones. As some sprites did not look very good scaled, Nitrome has "purposely redrawn" some of the sprites for the scaled down tablets.

The sprites used for the "scale down" tablets are used on the map of the game, regardless of what Apple tablet is is played on. This is because smaller sprites are needed for the map icons. It is not known if there are any sprite changes for the Android version.

Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage features much greater art than the previous three games in the series. The art is noticeably more detailed and shaded, and introduces elements such as shiny helmets. Update 6 on the Ice Breaker iOS website was about the transition Nitrome made. Nitrome talked about they first tried to develop an art style that was based off the existing Ice Breaker game ( Ice Breaker , Red Clan , Gathering ).

Nitromes early on aimed at trying to make characters and objects a certain size as to not affect the gameplay and environment, as these sprites would eventually make it into the game, where they may be go through tight areas. Along with this, they tried to keep the sprites interesting without becoming distracting.

As seen from concept art of the game, some objects went through many iterations, while others only a few. Notably the skull bird creature went through many different designs, evolving from a horned rock shaped beast to a Cave Troll .

Despite Nitrome's attempt to use all the characters they converted from their flash version to the mobile Icebreaker version, some characters that were converted were not able to make it into the game. An example is the Valkyrie , who, although being given a new look, was cut from the game.

Development [ ]

Development of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage started in 2012 for about eighteen months [36] at a time when Nitrome.com was getting less revenue from advertisements. [37] The game was created as an attempt for Nitrome to combat piracy of their own games, particularly illegal ports being uploaded to the App Store. [38] Nitrome earlier stated Super Feed Me was taking a very long time, and starting a new project which Nitrome would be more focused on would allow them to more quickly get a game out on to the App Store. [38] Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was unveiled to the Nitrome community on July 12th 2012 [39] , where it was 80% complete. [40] Icebreaker reached 85% completeness on August 17th 2012 [41] , reaching 90% completeness sometime in December 2012. [42]

Although Nitrome had originally decided to publish the game themselves and not rely on a publisher [43] - and even turned down offers from other publishers beforehand [43] - Nitrome accepted Rovio's publishing offer based off Rovio's reputation [43] . This new partnership was established around a year into the game's development [43] , and was publicly announced on May 14th 2013 [44] . On June 17th 2013, Nitrome announced that Icebreaker A Viking Voyage had been submitted to the iTunes App store and had been approved, and was scheduled for release on June 20th 2013. [45] .

Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage was released for iOS a day early in the Finish app store (June 19th), for the purpose of checking for bugs. [46] Upon the worldwide release of Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage, the site was updated with a new skin - Icebreaker .

With the release and success of the iPhone version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage, Nitrome later announced on July 23rd 2013 that an Android port of the game was in development. [47] The start of an Android port caused Nitrome to form two teams for development of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage - one team (called the "iOS team" [48] ) that would work on new features for the game [48] , the game's level packs [48] , and the iOS version of the game [48] , and another team which would work on the Android version [48] (called the "Android team" [48] ), this team working on making the iOS version of the game and the game's features compatible with Android, coupled with working on the Android port of the game. Along with this, Nitrome hired a proper testing team to test the various builds of the Android port of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage for bugs [49]

The Android port of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage took around 9 months to make [50] , Nitrome having to deal with various problems the game would have across many type of Android tablets, some of these problems being adjusting the game to the various resolutions and screen sizes of Android, as the original iOS build of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage had only two levels of scaling, which would be insufficient for the large variety of Android tablets [51] . Along with the game planned to be compatible with a wealth of devices that use the Google Play store, Nitrome also planned a version of the game for the Amazon App store that will be compatible with Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD [52] , and Kindle Fire HDX [28] , this version released on the same day as the Google Play version [52] . August 7th 2013 saw the announcing of Achievements and that development of the next level pack had started, [53] more information about the level pack announced the next day [54] . These Achievements were released on October 17th 2013 in the 1.1 update for the iOS Icebreaker A Viking Voyage, this update fixing a few bugs present in the original game. [55]

Nitrome announced on December 27th 2013 their plans for a simultaneous release of both the upcoming 1.2 update for the iOS version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage and the Android version [56] . This update for the iOS version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage would contain the new level pack ( Kraken ), new missions for Achievements [57] , and would also be released simultaneously alongside the Android version of the game [56] , which would also include Achievements [53] and all the content included in the iOS update [58] . Along with this, the iOS version would be updated to support cloud saving [56] (the Android version, due to being released at the same time, also having this cloud saving [56] ). In April 2014, a decision was made between Nitrome and Rovio to transfer Icebreaker A Viking Voyage from the Rovio Stars' account to Nitrome's account, this allowing Nitrome to maintain and update the game at their leisure. [59]

Transfer of the HD version of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was successful, and around this time Nitrome also made the HD version Universal, removing its iPad exclusivity and allowing iPhones and iPod Touches to download the game [20] . Despite success transferring the HD version, technical problems were encountered with the iPhone version [60] . Because one of the in-app purchase IDs in the Icebreaker A Viking Voyage game conflicted with an in-app purchase ID of the same name on Nitrome's account, the transfer for the iPhone version failed and inadvertently caused in-app purchases for the iPhone version to not be purchasable [61] . Despite Nitrome's attempts to remedy the situation, they eventually had to reach out to Apple for help. [62] During this unfortunate event, the Android build of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was completed and ready for submission to Google Play and the Amazon App store, along with the update for the iOS versions ready for submission to Apple [63] .

Due to the current transfer problem, the iOS update would not be received by current owners of the game if Nitrome decided to upload a new build of the game to their iTunes account instead of waiting for the game to transfer [64] . Because of this, and Nitrome still wanting to have a simultaneous release for both the iOS update and Android version [65] , the Android version was deliberately held back from submission to Google Play and the Amazon App Store until the transfer problem was solved [65] . Fortunately, this problem with transferring the game was resolved on April 17th 2014 [66] , and it was on this same day that Nitrome submitted the Android version of the game to Google Play and the Amazon App Store and the iOS update to the iTunes store. [66] Both the Android version and iOS update were approved by April 25th, on this day Nitrome announcing the Android version and iOS update were scheduled for a May 7th release. [67] The May 7th release saw Nitrome successfully releasing the Android version on Google Play, but due to technical difficulties having to delay the release of the Amazon Appstore version on the said appstore. [5] Fortunately, this version saw a release on June 12th 2014 [3] , which caught Nitrome off guard [68] .

Apple offered Nitrome the opportunity of Free App of the Week , which Nitrome accepted. This promotion ran from August 27th to September 5th 2014, and allowed Nitrome to spread their brand to a new audience. [69]

Beta elements [ ]

Main article: Beta elements (Ice Breaker: A Viking Voyage)

Ice Breaker A Viking Voyage contains an enormous amount of content that did not make it into the final game. Most of this is usually content relating to early images of a level, although sometimes complete characters were renamed, unused, or taken out of the game.

Reception [ ]

Icebreaker A Viking Voyage has received positive to universal acclaim, garnering on Metacritic an average "Critic Score" (average score determined by several professional reviews) of 87 [70] . John Bardinelli of Jay is Games described the game as "polished and easy to play" and "an absolute juggernaut of a game", praising the game's dialogue, art, and level diversity. [80]

Rob Rich of 148 Apps awarded the game an "Editor's Choice" award, also praising the game's humour and art, along with the diverse gameplay and clever level design, awarding the game an overall score of 4.5 out of 5, concluding his review stating "I’m not entirely sure that I could be any happier with Icebreaker. It’s an incredibly fun, incredibly diverse, and incredibly clever physics puzzler." [76]

Icebreaker A Viking Voyage has been praised for its graphics, Andrew Koziara of Appolicious describing it as "fantastic, with a muted color palate and a somewhat pixelated look that adds a retro feel to the otherwise modern 2-D visuals." [81] , John Bardinelli of Jay is Games commenting how the pixel art "looks gorgeous on an iPhone/iPad's screen.". [80] A few reviewers have likened the game's graphics to looking similar to that of graphics on Nintendo's SNES . [82] [83]

The game has also been praised for its humour, Slide To Play stating in its conclusion how the game can be "uproariously funny at times" [79] , Pocket Gamer also highlighting game's humour as being "Not occasionally-laugh-out-loud funny, but constant-smirk-on-your-face funny.". The most praised part of Icebreaker has been its gameplay, which has consistently been praised for its diversity as well as it managing to fit so much into a single game mechanic.

Criticism of the game has been mainly aimed at the game's occasional inconsistent physics, Trevor Sheridan of Apple'N'Apps describing this as "many levels miss fine tuning to the point that boulders can get stuck, ice can fall through gaps, and Vikings can slow down on a slide...you have to replay a level with the same technique, and just hope one of these stumbles doesn’t happen". Erik Carlson of Slide To Play called the physics "a tricky widget to overcome sometimes", citing how a single strategy for a level can be drastically altered by one's finger being off by a very short distance, and also how one's finger can "very easily cover up what you’re supposed to be doing in order to be successful". [79]

Another criticism of the game was two finger scrolling, Nadia Oxford of Gamezebo calling it "very awkward at times" [73] and Rob Rich of 148 apps stating that it was "problematic at times" when trying to avoid going over par. [76]

Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was the #1 iPhone app in the US and UK on June 20th 2013, along with the #1 iPad app in the UK, and #2 iPad app in the US, along with being the #1 app in many other territories. [84]

Nitrome has spoken about how the sales of Icebreaker on the Amazon App Store have been very poor, though they have said how the problems with launching it may have impacted sales. [85] Later on, Nitrome continued to still not gain much revenue from its Amazon App Store apps - Icebreaker A Viking Voyage and 8bit Doves - which points to Icebreaker A Viking Voyage continuing to sell poorly on this platform. [86]

A three game bundle consisting of Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage, Gunbrick mobile , and 8bit Doves was offered on the Apple App Store on January 29 2015. [87]

Promotions [ ]

On iOS Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was made free from August 27th 2014 to September 5th 2014 by Apple as Free App of the week. [69] Users who downloaded the game got the entire game for free, although the next update for the app caused advertisements to appear for those who had downloaded the free version.

At some point in 2014 on the Amazon App Store the game was made "Free App of the Day" [86] .

The game was again made free on iOS for a limited time starting on December 28 2014, as part of App Turbo's "App of the Day". [88]

On June 26th, 2015, Pocket Gamer and App Spy gave out on App Spy's Twitch channel an iOS download code for Icebreaker A Viking Voyage, along with four other games, as part of Free Game Friday [89] .

Porting to other devices [ ]

Nitrome has not declined the possibility of porting Icebreaker A Viking Voyage to other devices. Nitrome has stated that the sales of the game from the Android version will influence whether the game gets ported to other devices [90] , as poor sales of the Android version will severely hinder the game being ported to other devices [90] .

Porting the game has been made difficult, as early on when the game was in development for iPhone, Nitrome did not anticipate they would be porting it to other devices. [91] When porting the game to another device, much work has to be done to get the game working on a different screen size [91] . New game assets have to be made [91] , and some coding for the game needs to be rewritten entirely in order for it to work on that device [91] , such as how the edges of ice are rendered [91] .

A computer version of the game in the form of a paid download [90] will be considered in the future [90] , though Nitrome has declined the possibility of making a free flash/HTML5 version of the game [92] . Nitrome has previously stated that if making a port of the game, a PC/Mac port would next [93] .

Other mobile phones [ ]

Although Nitrome will be considering porting the game to other phone devices [90] , they have not specified which.

Nintendo 3DS [ ]

For a Nintendo 3DS port of Icebreaker A Viking Voyage, a lot of new content for already existing content would have to be made [90] , such as having to resize the game's art for the Nintendo 3DS screen [91] and reprogram the dimensions for both art and levels [90] [91] , as the Nintendo 3DS's screen has vastly different ratios than iPhone [91] , along with a smaller screen [90] .

A new way for scrolling through levels would have to be found [91] , as the Nintendo 3DS has a resistive touch screen capable of only registering a single touch at a time, unlike the iPhone which can register multiple touches at a time. Another problem for a Nintendo 3DS port would be what the top screen would be used for [91] , as the bottom screen would have to be used for the ice slicing.

Credits [ ]

In-game advertisements [ ].

The presence of advertisements in Icebreaker A Viking Voyage has changed over time. Originally, ads were included in exchange for advertizing in other Rovio games, though the ads in Icebreaker A Viking Voyage were dropped once ownership of the game was transferred from Rovio to Nitrome, later being reinstated for those who downloaded the game during Apple's Free App of the Week .

Rovio published [ ]

Upon its release, Icebreaker A Viking Voyage was published by Rovio. Rovio publishing the game allowed Nitrome to put advertising for Angry Birds in the game (specifically, in the pause menu), in exchange for advertising in Angry Birds. This attracted criticism as Nitrome had previously said that there would be no ads in the game, however, Nitrome later clarified that their "comments about their being no ads" [94] meant that there would be no "content unrelated to any party making the game" [94] (Nitrome's definitions of ads [94] ), and that what was considered "ads" by fans were actually "promotions" [94] .

Post Rovio publishing [ ]

When ownership of the game was transferred from Rovio to Nitrome, ads were presumably removed or replaced with Nitrome ones in the iOS version of the game. Because the Android version came after this ownership transfer, there was no change in the ads for the Android version.

Free app of the week ads [ ]

Icebreaker A Viking Voyage becoming Free App of the Week from August 27th to September 5th 2014 allowed those who had not yet bought the app to download it for free. Though the free version was identical to the premium version, this was changed in the next update , which caused (among other changes) ads to appear for those who downloaded the free version. The presence of these ads was something Nitrome was trying out on those who downloaded the free version [95] in order to test out the feasibility of free games with advertisements [96] .

In late January 2015, when Nitrome was asked about these advertisements they said that they were undecided on what to do with them, as although they planned to put out an update that adds an in-app purchase to remove them [97] , they did consider doing away with advertisements completely due to their initial experimental function [96] .

Advertisements were eventually removed in the next update , although only the Universal version got this update.

Icebreaker : A Viking Voyage : Présentation

Icebreaker : A Viking Voyage

Sorti en 2009 en version gratuite sur le Web, Icebreaker revient sur iOS dans une version certes enrichie, mais aussi payante. Toujours aussi givrée, la nouvelle aventure de nos vikings justifie-t-elle l'investissement ?

Icebreaker : A Viking Voyage

Points faibles

Icebreaker is well-known for spicing up the slicing formula with loads of physics-based puzzles. Swinging ropes, rotating structures, weighted levers and all sorts of pseudo-mechanical creations can be manipulated with the right cuts here and there. A Viking Voyage goes well beyond the established deviations and adds brand new features every few levels. Crows on ropes? Good idea. The anti-goat viking and the pro-goat herder are hilarious. And are you ready to play with troll snot? Your face says no, but as soon as you start playing, your fingers will say yes.

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage

There are a few in-app purchases in Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage, but they're completely non-intrusive. The game even points this out in a snarky sort of way. Instead of forcing you to pay to play, Nitrome went the route of awesomeness with a handful of optional power-ups. Finger of the Gods lets you drag vikings around the screen, which we don't have to tell you is very useful. The Magnet of the Gods attracts gold and chests so you don't have to run smack into them to collect them. Gravity of the Gods is the most creative and actually lets you tilt your mobile device to change gravity. That one can be a real game changer. All of these power-ups are limited use and can be purchased in three different package sizes depending on how godly you're in the mood to behave.

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage is Nitrome's first iOS release, and it's an absolute juggernaut of a game. Over 100 levels to play through, including a handful of challenge levels you can go back and attempt to master. Icebreaker is polished and easy to play, and the pixel art looks gorgeous on an iPhone/iPad's screen. Nitrome couldn't have done a better job bringing the series to mobile devices. A Viking Voyage is perfect!

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage walkthrough A note about coin collecting: If you can't get all the coins in a level in one go, it's okay! You can go back and try to get the remaining coins at any time. A note about par: Par can be hard! Feel free to share your tips below! You only have to save the vikings to achieve this, so don't worry about chests or coins if you are just going for par.

The First Cut

To achieve par, cut as close above the vikings head as possible.

Smashing Performance

To achieve par, cut as close above the vikings head as possible, then as close beneath the vikings as possible.

To get the chest, simply cut the rope holding it.

Two Finger Scrolling

Cut the rope to the left of the chest to send it down to the boat.

Scroll the screen so you can see both the viking in the ice, and the rope holding the hammer. Cut them both at the same time.

Cut free viking swinging on the rope to make him land in the boat.

To achieve par, ignore the chest.

Mind the Gap

Cut the icicle to fit into the shape below.

Cut down and to the right beneath the viking to send him sledding down. This will get you par.

To get the chest, after you cut the icicle to fill the gap, cut on both sides of the chest so it will fall and slide down.

The Cutting Master

Cut down and to the right on the ice sculpture's hat so it hits into the platform. It needs to jam it so it won't fall down so far when released.

To get the chest, cut beneath it so it slides to the left.

Cut to the left of the frozen viking and everything will fall to the boat.

To get par, ignore the chest.

The Par System

Cut a piece of ice first, then a viking, piece of ice, then viking.

Don't make the pieces too big, or they'll get stuck.

Cut the icicle above the viking's head and both the ropes on the right in one swipe.

As the viking swings toward the left, cut the short rope. He will continue to fly past the platform, then hang down by the boat. Cut him down.

If you're lucky, he'll bonk into the chest and you can cut that down when it swings out over the boat. Ignore the chest to get par.

Block Tipping

Cut about a quarter of the middle pillar off so it falls into the sea on the right. It still needs to be long enough to hit the right platform when it gets tipped over.

Cut a large enogh chunk of the left pillar so it slides into the middle and knocks it down.

Cut down to the left to make the other viking slide down to the boat.

Cut right above where the rope is hooked on to the far right icicle.

When the piece of ice swings to the left, cut the rope so it goes over the viking's head. It will slide down and push him into the boat.

To get the chest, quickly cut off it's icicle so it will fall in the boat. Ignore the chest if you are going for par.

Cut a slice out of the right pillar to make room for the viking to slide in.

When tht is clear, cut a chunk out of the right pillar to slide into the viking.

When he swings over, cut him out of the icicle. If you're lucky, the chest will come too.

Between the Lines

Coming Soon!

Cut the rope holding the boat.

Cut the rope holding the chest. Skip this if going for par. The troll and the chest will slide into the boat.

Time your cut of the viking so he'll slide into the boat when it swings back to the left. Tip: He slides pretty slow.

Chains vs Rope

Cut the left viking off down and to the right (Start just under where the chain blocks you). The ice block he's in will fall to the boat. Cut it in half so it will smash and the viking ends up on the boat.

Repeat with the viking on the right.

Cut the chest down with a straight cut above it.

Cut both remaining ropes in quick succession.

Cut one side of the ice off so the viking will tip into the boat.

Stuck Together

Cut the bottom left then quickly the bottom right of the triangle off. Start just inside the boat and go out. With good luck, the tall part won't fall over, and the ice block will be sitting in the boat with the chest on the bottom.

Shave both sides of the block so it looks like an upside down diamond. Something like the screenshot below.

Slice just above the treasure chest so the viking can break it free.

After that, I just kind of cut the rest of the ice off piece by piece until the vikings fell to the boat.

Cut the ropes in the following order: cage, chest, viking.

Death Awaits Below

Cut the ice below the chest to fill the holes.

Cut the chest out.

Cut the rope holding the viking.

Cut the top of the ice hammer on the left, releasing it to hit the viking.

Chip off the Old Block

Cut on the right to releast the giant ice cube. You'll want to cut it so only about 2/3's of it slides down the mountain so it will collect more speed. It will hit the viking, causing him to swing.

Time the cut of the viking's rope so the viking will collect the coins on his way down.

The Big Sneeze

Release the ice on the right. When it gets stuck, cut along the bottom so the top will continue to slide down.

Repeat when it gets stuck again. Use the height of the coins as a guide for where to cut.

Once the viking is hanging over the boat, cut the ice to release him.

Cliff Hanger

Cut the icicle the viking is in near the top. It needs to be long so it will catch on the sticky part.

Cut the snot strings on the right each time the icicle sticks, until it is hanging over the boat.

When it is hanging over the boat, cut the snot on the left. When it swings out, cut it so it will bonk the chest down with you into the boat.

Do a Barrel Roll

Cut the icicle on the top left to weigh the platform down. It will stick to the viking.

Cut the ice under the chest to cause it to slide into the boat. Then slice it again the other way so the rest of it will sink into the water to the left.

Cut the viking loose and the barrel will roll all the way around until the viking sticks to the other side. Release him into the boat.

To get par, ignore the chest and just sink the icicle it is in into the ocean to the left.

Isle of Goat (Rescue all the goats to open more goat levels!)

You can still pass the level if goats get to the boat, but it will open some new levels if you get goats to the right and vikings to the left. Follow the next three steps for par, then I'll tell you how to get the goats.

Cut down and to the left to slice through both ice spikes at the same time. The goat, viking and two pieces of ice will land in the boat. Make sure the ice pieces aren't too big to get smashed.

Cut down and to the right as close to the viking's head as possible. This will send the goat and a chuck of ice to the right.

Cut down and to the left as close to the viking as possible. If you've done it right he'll land in the boat with a piece of ice small enough to smash. This will get you par.

Get the goats on the right and vikings on the left to open some new levels. Start the level over and follow these steps to achieve this.

Cut a sliver under the top goat so it will slide down into the center with the other goat.

Cut down and to the left under the viking and across into the other pillar where the goat was. If you're lucky, he'll tumble down to the boat.

Cut down and to the right above the frozen viking's head to send the goats over to the shepherd. Cut the ice in small enough pieces to be smashed.

Cut the other viking down to slide into the boat. Cut the ice small enough to get smashed.

Snotball (You must rescue all the goats for the next level to open.)

Cut the troll down to fall into the viking side. This will start the ball spinning.

Cut down the goats already on the ball when they are over the shepherd side.

Cut down and to the right under the upper goat to slide him onto the ball. The icicle that comes with him needs to be long enough to hit the goat on the hill down to the shepherd.

Cut the vikings (and chest, if desired) down over the ship. Slide the top right viking onto the ball to get him as well. If the ball stops spinning, cut some more ice to get it going.

To get par, cut the right viking down to the ball. When it spins, cut the vikings down.

Angry Goats (Rescue all the goats to unlock the next level.)

To get par, make a single cut down and to the left on the bottom middle pillar.

To get the goats, start with the one at the top. Slice a small chunk of ice down and to the right benath the top goat. He should land to the right of the top viking.

Next, very carefully slice benath the top viking so he slides to the left while the goats stay up on the ledge.

Next cut the ledge with the two goats down and to the right so they fall to the shepherd, then cut down and to the right so the bottom goat slides in.

Cut down and to the left between the top viking and the frozen viking so the top viking will fall to the boat.

Cut below the frozen viking to tumble him down to the boat, then do the same to the last viking.

Billy Goats Gruff (Rescue all goats for another goat level to open.)

To get par, cut the right most rope on the bridge AND to the right of the viking sitting on the ice with one cut.

To get the goats, start by cutting the the right of the viking sitting on the ice. Cut it close to the wall. He'll swing over and fall into the boat, hitting the lower viking in on his way.

Cut the left piece of ice (the one you haven't cut yet) in half. It will swing over and hit the lower goat.

While the above piece of ice is swinging over, cut the bottom piece of ice off to fly over and hit the lower goat into the boat.

Cut the right most rope on the bridge. The top goat will fall down to the shepherd, and the top viking down to the boat.

Occasionally the top viking will fall to the wrong side. Start over if needed.

The Wicker Goat

Cut the very center rope to drop the platform.

Cut the left most rope. When the viking swings to the right, cut the other rope. He should land on the ramp the the opening on the left so he'll roll down.

Cut the chest if desired.

Cut both the rope holding the right viking at the same time. He should fall and roll to the left.

Cut down and to the right below the chain to slide the viking down to the next platform.

Cut down and to the left below the chain to slide the viking down to the boat.

Cut the first two icicles in on swipe.

Time your cut of the third icicle so the viking will fly into the boat.

To get the viking, cut about 2/3's of the right pillar off.

Cutting Master Returns

There's a chest at the top of the right hand tower. Keep cutting it loose until it gets to your boat.

Cut the chain off the stickies in the following order, letting the viking come to a rest between cuts: right, left, left, right, right, left.

Cut under the viking on the left. The crows will carry him up. Cut the ropes when he is above the coin.

Cut under the viking on the right. Drop him down on the rightmost coin after the platform lowers.

To get par, cut the ice on both vikings with one slice, then to the same for the ropes.

Crow's Nest

Cut the rope beneath the boat the viking is on. The crow will carry it up.

After the crow carries the viking higher than the second boat, cut the right rope of the boat the viking is in to tumble the viking into the second boat.

Cut the rope beneath the second boat. The crow will carry it up.

When the viking has been carried above cliff level, cut the right rope of the boat he is in to tumble him toward the chest. He and the chest should land in the third boat.

Cut the rope beneath the third boat. After collecting the coin, cut the left rope.

To get the chest, replay the level, but once you get to the third boat, don't cut the rope beneath it. Only cut the left rope.

To get par, get the viking into the second boat as outlined above. With one cut, release both remaining boats. When the viking is high enough, cut the right rope and he'll tumble all the way down.

The Fall and Rise

Cut the middle rope--the one without the crow.

When the crows go low enough, cut the viking loose to slide to the ice.

Trim the ice cube to a smaller size so the crows can now carry it up. If you time it right, you can get the coin.

As soon as the crows pass the wooden platform, cut the rope holding the platform.

Cut the rope the right crow is holding before the crows hit the spikes.

To get par, cut the platform rope and the right rope as the crows fly up in one slice.

Finger of the Gods

Use the freely given hand of god power to move the viking to all the coins without hitting any spikes, and then to your boat.

Ye Olde Mill

Disturb the crow on the ground under the chest. He'll fly and bump the chest causing it to swing. Cut it when it is over the boat.

Cut the middle rope--the one holding the two windmills together.

Cut the bottom left rope and wait for the viking to slide over.

Release the left crow, then the right crow.

Cut the remaining rope and wait for the viking to slide into the boat.

Feed the Troll

Scroll the screen so the boat is in the middle. Slice both ice cubes (beneath the crows) with one cut.

On the left you'll see a piece of ice that resembles a sled. Separate it so it starts to go down the hill.

As the sled goes beneath the vikings and chest, cut their ropes so they land in it. It will get them to the boat.

The Sacrifice

Cut the ice platform from just to the right of the circle up to the rope holding the troll. The viking will go to the boat, and the troll in the mouth of the idol.

Cut the viking down.

The Secret Path

This level is all about timing.

Cut the short rope holding the viking on the right. A little after he starts swinging to the left, cut him down to fall into the rightmost hole.

Repeat with the viking on the left, making him fall down the leftmost hole.

To get par, quickly cut both of the short ropes, then time it to cut both the vikings down with one stroke.

I believe the idea is to impale the trolls with the stakes on the sides of the gorge. I beat this several times with luck, but couldn't find anything repeatable.

This level takes good timing and a little luck.

Cut the second hanging troll into the spikes.

When the spikes are rotated out of the way, cut the first hanging troll down. He will land on the meat and eat it, causing the next spike platform to rotate.

When the second platform rotates out of the way, cut the fourth troll down to eat the meat on that side.

Now all the platforms are rotating. With good timing, you can drop the viking down between them all and to the boat.

Wood Floats

There are two pieces of wood suspened from ropes. These need to drop into the water below pointy side down.

So for the piece on the left, cut the left rope first, then the right and it will flip upside down. With the right piece, simply cut both ropes at the same time.

Cut the rope holding the viking in the ice ball on the right. He'll roll all the way to the left and stop when he hits the other viking frozen in ice.

Once the ball stops, cut the two ropes attatched to the viking in the ice block. You will float up and slide into the boat.

To get par, cut the second rope to flip the wood upside down and both the pieces of rope holding the other wood all at once. Then release the vikings and ignore the chest.

Checking In

Starting near the bottom of the ice pillar, slice down and to the right to make it start sliding.

When it stops sliding, cut it again a little higher. Repeat until it bumps into the cliff.

Once you run into the cliff, cut down and to the right beneath the viking. He'll sled down to the boat.

Cut the chest down when you slide under it.

Magnet of the Gods

Slice down and to the right to start the viking sliding down to the boat.

Cut the Ice

Cut the short rope on top.

When the viking swings to the right, cut the first rope on the cliff.

When the viking swings to the left, cut the middle rope on the cliff.

Cut the rope connected to the ice, the cut the rope to drop the viking to the boat.

Boulderdash

Cut the rope holding on the wood that is holding the boulder back. The wood will push the viking down to a platform.

Cut the rope every time the viking lands on one of these platforms before the boulder reaches him.

Cut the chest right before the boulder comes and it will get pushed to the boat. To get par, ignore the chest.

Cut the ropes in the right order to get the skyride down to the bottom. Cut each rope after the ride has come to a stop. See screenshot.

Once the boat has reached the bottom, cut the one of the ropes of the skyride to dump him into the boat.

Chicken Surprise

Slice down to the left right below the chain holding the chest to make the chest slide down.

Cut down and right from right behind troll at about a 45 degree angle to make him go to the chicken.

Cut another slice off from where the troll was standing to pave the way for the viking.

Cut beneath the viking to send him down to the boat. He may get stuck, just keep cutting.

Drop down any 7 trolls or rocks before dropping down the viking.

Haven't figured out the chests yet.

The Monolith

Slice down and to the right beneath the chest to get it to the boat.

Cut slightly down and to the right near the bottom of the monolith to topple the pillar over onto the boat.

Cut the top viking down to land on top of the pillar.

Then slice up into smaller pieces so all the vikings land in the boat.

Chicken Coop

The idea is to get all the troll bones down to the scale. Sometimes skulls get stuck and don't fall. If this happens, you'll have to start over.

Starting at the top, cut the troll down. He'll roll over the gap and stop at the edge.

Cut the chicken nest next and egg down in one swipe. The egg should destroy the troll and knock his bones over the edge.

On the next level down, the troll has to swing over the egg and chicken in the nest. Cut the right rope, then the left when he swings over. When he hits the chicken at the end, the bones will fall down.

To get the chest, cut left rope, then the right to swing it in the gap and down to the boat.

Cut the rope by the remaining troll. He'll roll to the chickens. When his bones fall down, it will disrupt the scale causing the vikings to fall into the boat.

Curious Crevice (Must pay 30 coins to the gatekeeper to access this area.)

Cut down and to the right to the left of the chest. This will cause it to hit into the gear below. When the viking in the icicle rotates all the way over to the right, cut him loose.

If you're fast enough, you can also cut the chest down to fall through the path on the right to the boat.

To the far right, cut the leaning domino at its base down and to the left.

Cut the domino with the viking into a smaller piece so he falls into the boat.

On the far right cut the two pillars with the notches at the same time at the narrowist point. This will get you par.

To get the coin, add an extra cut down and to the right on the pillar with the chest so the viking will fall onto the coin. Do this before cutting the notched pillars to get the coin.

The Mountain Troll (Must pay 40 coins to the gatekeeper to access this area.)

You must continuously feed the troll chicken eggs while avoiding his bodily fluids. The chickens at the top produce eggs that will fall when you swipe them.

Start by swiping the left chicken. After the egg gets in the troll's mouth, swipe the right chicken to move the viking out of the way. Repeat.

The troll will then burp out a bubble. Swipe to pop it till it is gone.

Roll another egg into the troll's mouth. He's faster now so you have to swipe the bird early than you think. If you miss the pattern will repeat, so try again.

When the troll is gone, cut the ropes to release the viking.

My First Cannon

Swipe the cannon to shoot the viking out.

Cut his rope at the right time to fly into the ship and pick up the coins. If you look closely at the background, make the cut when he's on the bellows.

A Close Shave

In this level, you can aim the cannon.

Cut a hole through the ice so you can shoot toward the boat. Do the bottome cut first. Then if trying for par, make the second cut so it also makes the viking swing on his rope and cuts down the icicle on the right to cover the spikes.

Cut tthe rope holding the viking. Aim

To get the chest, cut the ice shelf it is on and the rope so it falls to the cannon. Shoot it over before you shoot the viking. Ignore the chest if going for par.

Gravity of the Gods

You can touch the wood walls, but if you touch dirt or spikes, you die.

Cut the ropes of the trolls below you and tilt them into the spikes.

Carefully float up to get the coins, if desired.

If you want the other coin, tilt the troll on the chain out, and you in.

Manuever the troll back into the box where the coin was. Trap him there as you float by.

Continue down, floating carefully by the other chained troll.

Magic Touch

See screen shot for order and placement of first three cuts.

After making the third cut, quickly cut the piece the viking is on before he slides too far.

Break up the piece of ice the chest is in for your final cut.

Drop and Roll

Cut the top of the large icicle off to drop the chest down. Ignore the chest if going for par.

Cut above the third chain to drop the whole icicle into the gap below.

Release the ice ball by cutting the rope.

Cut the icicle between the top and the middle chains to drop into the hole below. Watch the angle of your cut. It needs to be slightly down and to the left.

Repeat, cutting between the remaining chains, but down and to the right.

The ball will knock the viking down. Cut his rope so he'll swing into the boat.

Rocket Fuel

Note that there is the big thruster engine in the middle, a small one on the wood on the right, which lowers the wood, and one above the cannon, which raises it up.

To get the chest, swipe the left side of the engine to make it go right. It will hit the barrels, which in turn will hit the chest. Lower the wood and raise the cannon so the chest will fall into the cannon, then shoot it to the boat.

Swipe the engine on the right to make it go left and fall down a level.

Swipe on the left side to make it go right to hit the viking. Make sure the cannon is raised so he'll go in there.

To get the coin, raise the cannon and lower the wood and shoot the viking at the coin.

When the viking returns to the cannon, shoot him to the boat.

To get par, ignore all treasures. When the engine falls to the lower level with the viking, swipe the big engine and the cannon engine at the same time.

Steam Powered

Cut the jutting piece of ice off the end of the ice ramp.

Swipe the boat to send it up the ramp.

The boat will hit a rock and stop. Drop the viking down into it.

Swipe the boat again. It will move forward a big more then hit another rock and throw the viking onto the platform.

Swipe the engine on the hammer to knock the viking to the finish line.

To get the chest, there is a secret engine. Swipe the barrel above and to the right of the motor boat.

Hot Air Joyride

To get the coin by the ticket booth, thrust the right engine.

Cut the first icicle down, the thrust the left engine. The viking should pick up the coin as you cross over the ice.

Cut the troll down.

Cut the ice pillar so you can get through.

Continue to the right. Cut the ceiling down so you can go over the troll.

Cut the pillar to go through to the boat. Cut the rope of the basket to dump the viking in.

You have to cut the ship down so it lands right side up in the water. Cut like the screenshot and it should land right.

To get the coin on the left, shoot the free viking over from the tallest cannon.

He'll fall back down into the left cannon. Shoot him to the tall cannon, then to the boat.

Cut down the frozen viking in the smallest piece of ice possible.

You can't shoot the viking, but the heavy stone he's hooked to. Shoot him from the left cannon, to the tall cannon, then the rightmost cannon, then the boat.

Going in Circles

You can't aim the barrels in this level.

When you get to the cannon just to the right of where you started, cut the long icicle down. When you shoot into the ice, you'll fall to the middle cannon.

Cut the ropes holding the hanging cannon. It will fall lower, hanging on the chains.

Shoot from the middle cannon to the hanging cannon, then down to the boat.

Love Triangle

You can't aim the barrels in this level. Use the cannons to get the chains out of your way.

Before shooting anything, to get the chest, cut it down.

Shoot the cannon, then slice bellow the chain beneath the viking. Cut the piece of ice that falls in half diagonally so it will fall to the boat.

Shoot the cannon twice. Slice out a chunk to the left of the viking. Then slice along his left. He should then fall into the boat. If he gets stuck, cut the bottom off his ice cube.

Target Practice

Cut down one of the rocks above the left cannon. Shoot it over to the right cannon. The coins are a good guide as to where to aim.

Shoot the rock to the right to hit the viking. While he's swinging, cut him down so he'll fall into the cannon.

Shoot the viking over to the left cannon. The coins are a good guide. Shoot him up and back down into the cannon if you want to collect all the coins.

Shoot him over to the boat. Ignore coins for par.

Sounds of the Sea

The goal is to spin the shell around counter-clockwise enough times so the viking falls out.

Cut the left ball of ice in a little less than half (down and to the right). This will get the shell moving and hit the chest into the boat.

When the shell starts swinging back counter clockwise, cut a bit more than half off the other iceball when it starts on the upswing.

If you've done it right, the shell will swing all the way around.

When the bigger chunk is on the upswing, cut it down in size, and the shell will go all the way around, dumping the viking out. It make take a little experimentation to figure out how much to cut off.

At the far right, cut between the last two chains, leaving the ledge so the vikings can't roll off. The stone viking should roll down, the live viking should stay.

Next cut between the first and second chains. The stone viking will roll down and knock the viking into the cannon.

This cannon can't be aimed. Shoot to get the viking to the high cannon.

For par, shoot the viking straight to the boat.

To get coins and start the generator, shoot him to the next lower cannon, then into the higher one. Shoot him into the stone viking.

The stone viking will swing into the upper cannon, and the live viking will fall back into the lower cannon. Cut the stone viking's rope, then shoot him to the stone boat. Go back to the first cannon and shoot the other stone viking into the stone boat.

This will start the generator and lift the lower cannon into a higher position. Shoot to get the coins. He'll stick to the wall.

The other cannon is now rotating. Cut the treasure when it's over the boat.

Releast the viking either into the rotating cannon, then shoot him into the boat.

This will open once you've completed the level Power Up.

Like Clockwork

Cut the rope holding the top platform. The chain holding the gear will roll off the edge, then land on the bottom platform,

Once it has landing, cut the rope holding the middle platform. The gear should now be hanging over the left rotating gear.

Cut the rope holding the bottom platform. This will set all the gears in motion and open the way to the boat.

If you want the chest that is rotating on the top gear, cut it so it falls into the boat. If you are going for par, just cut the viking down.

Forward Roll

When the moving platform is almost halfway up, release the rock hanging on the left. It needs to land on the platform on the right.

When the moving starts rising out of the ocean, cut the rop holding the platform the rock is on. It needs to roll over the moving platform and knock the viking in.

To get the chest, cut it down onto the moving platform. The stone will push it along to the boat.

Kick a Troll

Sadly, you don't actually get a doll if you drop the swords onto the trolls.

Cut the viking into the cannon. Shoot him up if you want the coin. Shoot him into the other coin if you want. He should bounce back to the cannon if you aim a little high.

Cut the swords to kill the trolls. Then aim the cannon at the bullseye to fly over to the boat and collect the last coin.

To get par, you've got to cut the swords to kill the trolls and release the viking in one cut.

Getting Stuck

Cut the viking's ice cube so he'll slide down and get picked up by the sticky crane.

There's a sticky platform at the top held by a rope. Cut it loose to swing over and grab the viking.

Release the viking from the stickies when you are over the boat. If you're lucky, you'll pick up all the coins on your way down.

Cave Trolls

Cut the stone on the right to fall into the cannon. Shoot it at the bottom of the rotating platform to change it's direction.

Cut the viking down. He should now safely roll down to the cannon on the bottom right.

There should be a rock in the bottom left cannon. Shoot it and it will fall down the hole trapping a cave troll beneath it.

If you want the treasure chest, cut it down and shoot it from the left cannon. Ignore this if going for par.

Wait for the near by cave troll to fly up as far as it goes, then shoot the viking from the right cannon and to the boat.

You start with a viking in the left cannon. Shoot him into the upper cannon.

If you want the coin, shoot the viking down into it. If you want the upper coin, time your shot up when the upper cannon is on the far left. The viking should ride across to the coin. Ignore all this for par.

Once your viking is back in the upper cannon, shoot him into the nest and he'll ride over into the right cannon.

Shoot him down into the lower cannon when the path is clear, then to the boat.

A Link to the Blast

Cut the vikings free. They'll fall and land in the bottom cannons. Watch for troll caves before every shot.

If you want the coin, shoot the left viking only, then shoot them both to the next level.

If you want the coin on this level, shoot the right viking only. If you want the coin on the top level, shoot him back so the vikings are on the right side. Then shoot them up.

Situate the vikings in the left and middle barrels. Shoot them both up, then shot the right viking so the are both facing upwards. To get the coins, shoot the right viking alone.

Shoot both vikings at the same time. They should eventually get to the top two cannons on the right.

Leapfrog down. It's a matter of timing and waiting. If you wait long enough, the trolls eventually fly closer together. Keep leapfrogging and you'll end up in the boat.

Ready the Cannons

Shoot the spike balls on the bottom left out to get the trolls. Don't hit the viking!

You have to hurry a bit to keep ahead of the viking. If you get all the trols away, he'll move himself to the boat.

Cut the chest down to rest on the top of the chain to carry it over to the boat.

Turn Off the Light

Cut the circle down so it falls down the curve and rolls over the flames, extinguishing them. It will then continue to the boat.

Cut the right rope holding the chest. It will fall and extinguish the remaining flame. Enter ghost.

Cut the last two shapes with vikings down when they are swinging to the right.

Second Haunting (opens when you extinguish all the flames on Turn Off the Light.

You must extinguish all the flames to open another ghost level.

Cut right beneath the viking's feet to drop a chunc of ice down. It will extinguish the flame.

Cut a triangle off the right side to slide down to the right extinguishing the flame down there.

Boost the lower engine only on the right so you are hanging on the left side of the screen. This should also flip you chest side down.

Cut the chest down. It will extinguish the flame beneath it and slide to the boat.

Boost both the engines on the right and then the left to fling the viking up to extinguish the lights on both sides. Enter Ghost.

Boost one engine so the viking is hanging down again. If you want the coins, drop him from the right side to slide down to the boat.

To get par, simply make two cuts to send the viking to the left

Ghost in the Machine

To get par, simply cut down the viking.

You must extinguish all the blue flames to open the next ghost level

Boost the two engines next to the light brown arrows on the top gear to push out the platform.

Release the viking to roll and extinguish the first flame.

Boost the two engines next to the dark triangles on the middle gear to close the next platform.

Boost the two engines next to the dark triangles on the top gear to open it back up. The viking will roll down to extinguish the next flame.

There are two flames on the bottom platform. Boost two engines four times on the bottom right gear (letting it stop in between bursts)to get the platform so it barely covers the gap. The first flame will be off center to the left, and you'll se the second flame in the archway on the right.

Boost the two engines on next to the light triangls on the middle gear to open the platform and drop the viking down to extinguish the flame.

Boost the bottom right gear to move the platform as far as it will go.

Using the engines on the bottom left gear, boost to your heart's content to move the platform all the way to the left, causing the viking to roll over the other flame and into the boat.

Bombs explode when swiped!

Cut the ice to the left of the bomb to set it swinging. Swipe to explode when it gets stuck in the pillar.

Cut to the right of the viking to set him swinging.

Time your cut when he's swinging left to get the coins on his way. You'll need to cut the rope when he's about straight down to accomplish this.

Swing Boat Ride

Boost the left engine. When the boat starts swinging back left, boost the right engine.

Repeat until the boat flips upside down. It will stick to the top of the cave.

Swipe the bomb when it's in the tip of the triangle while the boat is upside down. Then shoot the viking through the hole and to the boat.

Hitting the Spot

Shoot the first three rocks into the cup of the platform.

When you get to the bomb, shoot it over so it will roll down the platform and onto the elevator.

The bomb will roll out of the elevator and down the top shaft. Explode it when it is under the stuck dwarf before it falls.

Shoot the dwarf into the boat.

Shoot two more rocks into the cup of the platform. This will swing the iced viking out far enough to cut him into the boat.

Shoot the last viking into the boat, followed quickly by the chest if possible.

The viking is hanging right above the boat. You need to clear the way with the bombs.

Cut a bomb down. Explode it on the ledge right above the boat.

Cut another bomb, and explode the wooden platform under the viking. If you are going for the chest, bomb the the platform above the chest, then the one below the viking.

Release another bomb and explode the ledge below the viking. Then release the viking.

Boom Boom Boom

Explode the right bomb, then the one that falls down to the right shortly after that. The third bomb should rolld own the hill.

Time your next explosion so the viking will roll into the wooden Y instead of falling into the death pit. He'll land in the cannon.

Shoot the viking up on to the moving platform.

Cut the platform down when it's over the boat.

The Fortress

Drop a bomb into the first moving cannon, the shoot it up to the next cannon.

Shoot the bomb again and it will land on the platform. Explode it to kill the troll and clear the platform.

Drop the next bomb into the moving cannon. Shoot it til it lands in the next moving cannon.

Shoot the bomb at the chained platform and explode it when it is near enough to blast a hole.

If you want the chest, cut it down and shoot it over.

Cut the viking down. If you want the coins, shoot him into each one. He should bounce back into the cannon before it moves away.

Shoot him to the boat.

Squash Blocks

Cut the left rope of the viking when the first block starts to rise.

Cut the left rope of the barrel when the second block starts to rise.

Cut the left rope of the platform holding the rocks when the third block starts to rise.

A chest drops up and down above the boat. Cut it when it is swinging to the left (before you get the viking past the third block) if you want it.

If you want the chest, scroll up and cut it down. It will fall in the cannon, then shoot it to the boat.

Cut first stone down. It will roll to the cannon.

Shoot it so it lands on the very left of the lower platform, sending him flying. He'll tumble into the boat.

Cut the second stone to fall to the cannon. Shoot it so it lands to the left of the other viking to send him flying.

Shoot the viking over to the coins, then he'll roll into the boat.

Service Please

Cut the ice cube right above the viking's head when a platform is below it. It has to fit under the jutting bit of ceiling you see to the right.

Slightly before the ice will hit into the ramp, cut the ice cube down to the right about half way up (not too steep of a cut or it will slide too fast). Then when it hits the ramp it will slide across and back onto the platform.

Repeat with the second ramp. To get the chest, cut it down on top of the viking.

The Serpent

There are engines attached to the cage the vikings are in. Use them to move to each side and collect a rock in each cannon.

You might want to practice manuevering in the cage. It gets tricky later.

Shoot the serpent 2 times. He'll change course after that. Watch for the track to light up to know where he'll be.

Hit him 2 more times. Then he becomes tough to avoid. Watch the lights and hit the engines accordingly. If any part of the snake touches a viking, you have to start over.

It's often possible to get two hits on him each time he's on the screen. Try it!

Hit him two more times and he turns into a speed demon, but stays on the top and bottom tracks. He'll explode and then you win!

Treasure Hunt

The pictures on the wall tell you what to do.

The first picture refers to the level in the Underdwell called Shipwreck. After you cut the boat down (see how under the Shipwreck level above), cut the top wave of the frozen wave down and to the right so it sildes into the boat. Solve as outlined above.

The second picture refers to the level in the Underdwell called Hot Air Joyride. Cut down the ice arrow at the end of the level into the boat, then solve the level as outlined above.

The third picture refers to the level in the Underdwell called Sounds of the Sea. The hidden item is in the left ball of ice. Solve as outlined above, making sure the first big chunk of ice lands in the boat.

When you find all three, return to the treasure hunt square to open aditional levels.

Open Sesame

When the platform is in the middle, cut straight across above both the vikings to drop the whole piece of ice and baskets onto the moving platform.(See how the ice shapes match up with the platform shapes?)

Cut each basket down to its respective gear to pen the way to the boat.

Cut each viking down when they are above the coins. To get par, don't worry about the coins and cut both vikings at once when they are centered over the hole.

Home Sweet Home

icebreaker viking voyage

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage Hammerfest: Between the Lines walkthrough

This is a Par 4, and you also want the chest so let's break up the huge block.

First off, you need to make the whole block visible, so move down with 2 fingers until you see the boat with the Icebreaker.

Make the initial two cuts as shown in the screenshot in order to drop down the Vikings and Chest.

Since the chunks are still too big to break up, make two more cuts as shown in the next screenshot and you should be home free.

If it fails, try your cuts again because it will work.

I LOVE Nitrome games, and this looks amazing....but no Android, no purchase. Sorry guys.

Perfect? Dang, I never played the game or even have a device to do so, but it almost sounds like Nitrome bribed you or something! Then again, I'm no reviewer, and I like to see Nitrome succeed...

icebreaker viking voyage

Thanks for the awesome review guys!

Hi everybody! I've completed all the game (all treasure chests, coins and pars) except for level Under Dwell - Dig It where I'm stuck on getting the par!! How it's possible to complete in just 4 slices?

I've tried all possible strategy but can't manage to finish under 5 slices... Any suggestion is highly welcome ???? ????

...if you need any help on other levels... Feel free to ask ;)

I also finished everything except Dig It. Gave up and did a Google search, and didnt find an answer--then I figured it out. . .

Dig it walk through:

Cut one: far right bomb. Cut two: explode first bomb on dirt ledge and cut bomb on left Cut three: explode bomb two at left edge of wooden ramp and release lower bomb in middle Cut four: wait about half a second after the third bomb drops out of sight, and cut the Viking loose--need to time it so the Viking lands on the bomb, and then tips into the boat.

Almost impossible!

How to Par on Dig It:

Cut 1: Far Right bomb and the lower of the 2 bombs. Cut 2: Explode 2nd rolling bomb and release the first hanging bomb. Cut 3: explode the bomb on the wood and the one on the lower ledge at the same time. Cut 4: Release the Viking!

How do I get par on the serpent? It takes 1 to move to cannons and 6 to disable serpent...

The art style is fantastic, the music is fantastic, this game is FANTASTIC!!!! By far THE BEST GAME EVER launched on mobile! I don't think there will be in the near future such a great game like Icebreaker:A Viking Voyage! Only Nitrome can make a greater game than Icebreaker! GREAT WORK!!

How do I par the ship in the bottle level?

Why Ice Breakers Is SUPER fun:

This game is SO fun!!!!!!! Ice breakers is kind of hard, but that makes it AWESOME!!!! Especially Isle Of The Goat. It was SO hard. I tried it like 3 times or something!! But that’s why its so fun!!!!!! But, I just don’t think it’s fair that you have to pay REAL MONEY for upgrades. (P.S. I wanted the give Ice Breakers a 4 and a half review but I couldn’t find out how.)

Amazing, Great Graphics, And Addicting!

Great game! I used to play this when I was about 5 years old, and when later on, my dad deleted it, because he had finished it. When I got much older, I really wanted to play it again, because for some odd reason, something reminded me of it. I searched everything that would relate to the title, and it could never find it. Then years later, I was about to go on my moms ipad, and suddenly I saw the game, and it reminded me so much of my childhood. Now, I love playing it and it's probably one of my favorite games! Also, I would love an update with more levels! Amazing game keep up the great work!

I ❤️ Nitrome

Imagine a world in which you buy a game and then don't have ads and in-app purchases constantly shoved down your throat. Seriously, close your eyes and dream. Now, buy a Nitrome game and experience that world. My love for Nitrome aside, Icebreaker is just plain fun, a great mobile puzzler with enough optional challenges to allow the novice to progress and the pro to squeeze some extra value and enjoyment out of this great game. Also, I love the 16-bit aesthetic. The sound design is phenomenal too. Get this game!

How to save your crew - Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage complete walkthrough with tips and video solutions

Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage is the first game from the new Rovio Stars publishing program. It's all about rescuing your Viking chums after they've been swept out to sea by an evil wind.

In each Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage level, you have to save your pals and guide them back to your longboat.

This often involves cutting ropes, slicing up big icy glaciers, avoiding trolls, and - of course - solving puzzles.

In this guide, we'll show you how to ace every level, explain the par system, tell you how each power-up works, and offer some general guidance to get you going.

Tips

You don't need to get everything in one go. If you miss a coin but finish the level, you can always try again. You'll only need to get that one leftover coin to ace the stage.

This applies to par (more on that in a minute), too. You probably won't be able to get under par and pick up all the same coins in one go. For trickier levels, then, aim for two solid runs (one for coins, one for par). The game will take the best of both.

Examine your plan. Can you use a single long slash to make two or more simultaneous cuts? This is the key to coming in under par.

Examine the ice formations. There are often hints to the best solution in the shape of unusual outcrops or bulges.

Don't waste your coins on the gates that simply offer an alternative path through the map (unless you're really stuck on one of the levels on the main route). Save that cash for the end-of-level gates. You can always go back and unlock the bonus levels later.

There are always three coins in a chest. Other coins are floating about on the level. You don't get any coins for good performance, time, or number of cuts.

The Par System

Once you finish the Trollmarsh level Cutting Master Returns, you'll be called back to Hammerfest to learn about the Par System.

Put simply, you are challenged here to finish levels by making as few cuts as possible.

Par

Achieving par on multiple levels will enable you to unlock bonus stages back at Hammerfest. You'll gain access to two special stages when you finish five, ten, 20, 40, 60, and 80 levels under par, and you'll unlock a final bonus level for beating all those special stages.

Power Ups

There are some handy power-ups available in Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage . In exchange for in-app purchases, of course.

These 'boosts' are essentially cheats, and enable you to get through tricky levels with ease. As such, only use these if you get really stuck.

You can buy each type of power-up in groups of ten, 30, or 80. Those costs are:

10 - £1.49 / $1.99 30 - £2.99 / $4.99 80 - £6.99 / $9.99

Or you can buy a buy a bundle of all three power-ups in groups of 30, 90, and 240. The prices, you ask?

30 power-up bundle - £2.99 / $4.99 90 power-up bundle - £6.99 / $9.99 240 power-up bundle - £13.99 / $13.99

Let's see what each one does, shall we?

Finger of the Gods

Simply tap and hold your finger on a Viking to move him about the screen. You can even scoop up gold coins before dropping the cheeky chappy onto your boat.

Magnet of the Gods

Once this power-up is activated, your Vikings become walking magnets for gold coins and chests. If they come within the vicinity of treasure, it will snap to them, meaning you don't need to have perfect aim when hunting for gold.

Gravity of the Gods

Once this power-up is activated, you can tilt your iOS device to change the gravity of the level and move objects about.

Solutions

Follow the instructions in these video tutorials to finish tricky levels, finish tough stages under par, and scoop up missing gold coins.

Hammerfest

Hammerfest is the first stage in the game, and acts primarily as a tutorial for Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage proper.

You'll learn about chopping up ice and rope; find out how to pan around the level; and earn your first gold coins.

Here are the video tutorials for those first levels:

If you come back to Hammerfest later in the game, you'll unlock bonus stages for finishing multiple levels under par. Here are the solutions to those tricky special stages:

Coming soon...

Trollmarsh

Trollmarsh is the first chapter in the main Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage campaign. Here, you'll find trolls (which eat your Vikings, but explode if they come close to chickens), goats, chains, crows, and other challenges.

Let's start with the main quest. Click below for the video solution to each stage in the story.

Part 2. Covers:

Trollmarsh also contains a pair of side-quests. You'll need to finish certain levels with special requirements to unlock those stages.

Find out more in our Trollmarsh Sidequests guide .
