Joss Stone … Performing In Every Country In The World

joss stone counting countries

Joss has traveled to 204 countries.  Joss Stone Counting Countries.

I have spoken to so many travel legends on Counting Countries, but this interview marks my first time speaking with a person, who gained their fame outside of the travel world.  Joss Stone is a multi-platinum artist who has won a Grammy.  But of course on this podcast, we focussed on her travel accomplishments.  Joss created the audacious project, Total World Tour, which entailed Joss performing in every country around the world.

I only learned about Joss at the beginning of 2019 when Thor Pedersen, former guest, shared with me that he saw Joss perform in North Korea.  With help from Thor and Simon Cockerell from Koryo Tours, I got Joss’s email.  What proceeded next was a 13-month email drip campaign.  Joss had an interest in being on Counting Countries but it was difficult to schedule.  I increased my efforts with self-sheltering during Covid assuming Joss might have more free time.  And my efforts were rewarded with an interview in early May.

I was quite hesitant to share with Joss that many of my interviews lasted over two hours.  Prior to the interview, Joss agreed to 45 minutes.  Thankfully, she extended this time several times during our conversation.  While our talk neared two hours, I still had dozens of questions left.  I will keep my fingers crossed for a future interview someday.

I would like to remind you that Untamed Borders supports Counting Countries.  Untamed Borders specializes in challenging locations like Afghanistan, Somalia, and Yemen.  Please consider Untamed Borders when the safety of travel improves.  James, a co-founder, speaks to me about my travels to Afghanistan with Untamed Borders.

Also, I would like to introduce Counting Countries Mini.  I am hosting live interviews with  Country Counters on my Instagram account, GlobalGaz.

Very very nice project… Very nice project indeed. It’s a shame that this did not get more media attention. I mean not that I follow the media much, so I would not have heard about it myself but my friends send me links when there is such news. I had only come across it briefly somewhere before. Whereas it should definitely have got much more coverage. I checked to see if it made the headlines in the main media outlets, nope; the only web search results are announcements in Joss’s own website and some local news. Such a shame, such a shame…

Same with Anthony Asael who went to every country working with school children, doing art. At least his project was sponsored by UNICEF but it did not get main stream media attention either. Instead, the likes of Lexie Alford make the news. One more stone added to the confirmation of what a crap world we live in.

Joss may not be very knowledgeable about the world and issues, I doubt she got to see much about the world to come to any understanding of it by the way she travelled, but what she says is so right, she has a magical talent, music, bringing people together and she is wise enough to use it. Plus, it is doubtful how much the people who travel “deeper” and “longer” have an idea about the world or any care for the people.

I share Joss’s view that it’s wrong for people to call it a world tour just by going to some countries. Even Elizabeth Gilbert has done a world tour after all, by going to three countries! Oh how the world of advertisement and media channels and promotes whatever they want and masses just buy it.

Plus, her message at the beginning of this interview was very important. That there are people who are content to just stay in their small corner of the world. That people who are constantly on the move may be the troubled ones in a way, unsatisfied with what they have. Of course there is a point to see, learn and experience the world, but her way of putting it “So sweet…” about her boyfriend going to London from Devon only at the age of 20, yet finding something wrong with herself, not being content to stay where she is instead of slamming the person who does not travel is such a refreshing look. It is important to note that people can gain the wisdom travellers gain by staying in the same place.

This podcast was also refreshing as well, taking a break from the vanity project travellers.

Ric, I’m really enjoying your podcast. I’m amazed at some of the places people have traveled too. I am an avid traveler and podcaster as well. My podcast is Zipping Around The World.com. If you are ever looking for a guest, I would be interested to be on your podcast. I could offer a view from almost 30 years of traveling, and wanting to get to new countries every year, but not sure I want to hit all 193.

Hi Dan…thanks for checking in. I will check out your podcast! Ric

Rick finally got around to listening to this…what an INSPIRING interview, I mean many of us are chasing the 193, but Joss has really made a big difference to the world through her travels, music and her foundation. This is just wonderful, she really is someone who gets amazing energy from her travels and gives out that energy too. Love love love this interview.

Glad you enjoyed as much as I did. I really thought she was an impressive person and came off so well for a lot of the reasons you pointed out.

New Single: 'LOVING YOU'

This was a song I wrote when Cody and I had just started dating. I thought our nights round the fire were magical and wanted to write a song about those evenings that are so enjoyable they can run into the next day without anyone noticing. I am a night owl by nature and he is an early bird so I am often trying to convince him to stay up till the early hours of the morning with me. The song talks about coming up with things to say to make him stay. Funny thing is Cody did stay, he just fell asleep! So I went upstairs and wrote this song”.

Joss Stone’s Total World Tour

Free spirit..

  • Writer Paul Gains

joss stone total world tour countries list

Dancing across the stage, long blonde hair twirling, and barefooted no less, Joss Stone is a mesmerizing presence at Montreal’s Métropolis club.

The 28-year-old from Devon, England returned to Canada with her six-piece band for the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal 2015 delivering an array of hits like “You Had Me” and “Fell In Love With A Boy” which have helped her sell more than 12-million records worldwide.

And those figures will only rise when she releases her seventh studio album on July 31: a reggae inspired R&B record “Water For Your Soul”. Stone credits hanging out with Damian Marley in Los Angeles as the impetus to explore these sounds, and she has set an ambitious target of completing what she calls a “Total World Tour”: gigging in every single country on the planet.

Stone has sung duets with such musical luminaries as Elton John, Sting, Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox , and Melissa Etheridge, and won a Grammy with John Legend. But fame and fortune comes with a price. Four years ago she was the target of a chilling kidnap/murder plot. Fortunately, the villains were caught and they are serving jail time.

“Was that four years ago now? Goodness me,” she declares. “It kind of affects you in that you lock the door instead of leaving the door open. Things like that. You know I don’t sit up at night rocking. I can’t live my life like that. I have to continue on and keep positive and hope that people don’t try to kill me anymore. What can you do? Not a lot.”

Recently, however, Stone’s full focus has returned to the world tour and checking countries off her list. “I was in Japan [recently],” she recalls. “‘How the hell did I get here?’ And I realized the answer to my question was ‘I am here because I make music and that is the only reason I am here. That’s how I can connect with these people. I thought, ‘You know what? Let’s do a gig in every country in the world.’”

Not without its challenges, the tour has forced Stone to get creative with her scheduling, such as the time she visited Africa last fall. “There was one moment in Swaziland that was amazing,” she says. “We were going to be in Lesotho, which is pretty close. I said ‘can you sort out of a gig in Swaziland?’ And they said ‘you know what Joss? There is absolutely nowhere that you can play at all, nowhere.’ Luckily we found this venue [called] House on Fire and oh, my god, it was like walking into Aladdin’s cave,” says Stone. “It was the most unusual venue I have played in my life.”

Two days before the joyful Métropolis gig in Montreal (which was filled to capacity), she played a show in Liechtenstein, taking her tally to 44 nations. “We have done it in bits and bobs,” she laughs. “It’s kind of hard to make it work—there are so many countries where it costs such an amount of money to get there. I try to make it works so it’s not too ridiculous. And when I can have my full band, I do.”

Joss Stone Performs Surprise Gigs in North Korea and Syria as Part of Her 'Total World Tour'

The 31-year-old singer is now five years into her Total World Tour and rapidly running out of countries to visit

Forget the tour rider and luxury Winnebago: for Joss Stone a global tour is about getting off the beaten path.

The British singer — best known for her 2003 album The Soul Sessions —performed a small gig in Pyongyang, North Korea on Wednesday, as part of what her Instagram bio describes as a #totalworldtour to “bring loveliness in the form of music to every single country on our planet.”

Colin Crooks, British ambassador to North Korea, caught the secretive gig and tweeted “Amazing to meet @JossStone tonight in #Pyongyang and see her perform in country no 176 (or is it 177?).”

Tour manager Simon Cockerell, who organized the whirlwind visit , added that it had been an “utterly unique gig, great show, something really special. Let’s do it again with a full band and thousands of local fans not too far in the future!!”

Stone, 31, is now five years into her Total World tour and rapidly running out of countries to visit. In the week before flying to North Korea, she chalked off Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, and Iraq. Before that, the soul singer risked her neck to sneak across the border into war-torn Syria, to perform in the Kurdish-controlled northeastern corner of the country.

“It was a little scary crossing the border as of course we have absolutely no idea what might transpire,” Stone wrote on Instagram shortly after arriving in the Middle East. “We just have to trust the people on the ground that are advising us and looking after us.”

Stone later posted that it was “an experience we shall never forget,” adding, “Thank you to those who fed us and gave us your time and smiles and good feeling in a place we were once afraid to go. I hope to meet again in the future. Keep smiling and loving and making music and sharing your light xxx #totalworldtour .”

Question is: where next?

At the time she said: 'It was a bit harsh and a little bit odd.'

JoyRx holds its annual benefit concert on February 8th, featuring the soulful tunes of Joss Stone. Presented by Texas Children's Hospital - Austin, Live From the Heart brings together JoyRx's two passions: music and supporting children in need of Joy. Join us and celebrate, as every dollar raised brings the healing power of music to children across Central Texas.

Joss Stone: Water For Your Soul

“Water For Your Soul is about finding your own fulfilment, doing what you really want to do,” explains Joss Stone. “For me, it’s music. But water for your soul can be anything. Some people like food, some people like to dance, some like to travel. Music is necessary for me - it feeds my soul, the same way water feeds a flower. It’s also about being brave and letting go.”

Prepare to be amazed and delighted by Joss Stone. The free spirited English soul singer has been on an incredible journey, metaphorical and literal, artistic and geographic, absorbing influences and making music. Water For Your Soul is the fruit of her travels in sound, demonstrating how the teen soul prodigy has blossomed into an artist of style and substance. It is an album that pulses with the liquid groove of reggae, dazzles with the mix and match sonic adventure of hip hop, shimmers with the exotic sounds of world music and delivers the emotional belt of R’n’B.  “It’s really a combination of all the things I like,” explains Joss. “I’ll always have that bluesy, soul thing because it is in my voice. But these are new songs for me to sing, which is exciting.”

The album has been four years in gestation, the product of world travels, emotional adventures, and smoky jams with reggae royalty. A core musical strand can be traced back to LA sessions for Dave Stewart and Mick Jagger project Superheavy, on which Stone collaborated with Jamaican superstar Damien Marley. “At night, Damien and I would hang out. Wherever he goes he gets a studio, just to have the freedom to play and create a vibe. It’s like a party every day, warm Guinness and a ridiculous amount of weed.” In a hidden complex beneath the legendary Sunset Marquee, Stone recorded for a Marley solo project and jammed with his band, writing some new songs, Love Me and Wake Up. “I’ve always loved reggae and Damien gave me the confidence to go through that door. I’m not Jamaican, and I don’t speak patois but listening to Damien and his mates, this language is so gorgeous, and it’s got a melody to it and it helped me to put things together that fit that style of music.”

Joss continued her reggae education back home with legendary British based veteran Dennis Bovell, with whom she co-wrote The Answer. “He’s like a reggae encyclopaedia. And he can really sing. His pitch and range is massive. He’s funny too, a great person to work with.” But while Joss and her long term musical collaborator Jonathan Shorten embraced reggae influences, it was just one element of an ever expanding musical picture. “I like music and I’m not particularly obsessed with one style over any other. I just like listening to it and then becoming a part of it.” Another key collaborator was Mercury award winning British-Indian producer-composer Nitin Sawhney. “We became friends, I drop into his radio show and we’ve collaborated on things. His influence has been quite important. He has such a wealth of knowledge about the music of different countries, he’s really helped me to execute ideas I would get on my travels.”

Because travel is at the heart of Water For Your Soul, emotionally as well as musically. Away from the glare of showbusiness, Joss has nurtured her inner hippie, quietly dropping out from the pop scene to travel Europe for months in a beat up camper van with a boyfriend. “I just took what I had and off I went. There was a real sense of freedom, like this is life, it tastes good.” Many of the songs are rooted in those experiences on the road, working on a boat in Spain, spending a month broken down outside a bar in France, living in a forest, making new friends, moving on. Songs span the break-up of one love affair (Let Me Breathe) and the beginning of another (Stuck On You). “If there is a theme to the album, it springs out of conversations, arguments, ideas about ways of living in the world. It’s about shaking off all the crap and getting up and realising that hey you’re alive today, so move on.”

In 2014, after years of dreaming and planning, Joss began her Total World Tour, with the aim of performing in every country on the planet, collaborating with local indigenous musicians. She has visited Morocco, Dubai, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Australia, New Zealand and this year is touring South America with planned visits to North Africa and Eastern Europe. Gigs have ranged from stadium concerts to club shows and acoustic jamming sessions, while she has also been taking the opportunity to work with local charities and learn about humanitarian and environmental issues. “Musically, it kind of feeds me. And all these encounters and conversations lead to different things.”

Most of the songs for Water For Your Soul had been written and demoed before Joss’s Total World Tour began but widening horizons convinced her to completely rethink and recut the record. “There was a different energy and it was exciting.” The sound expanded to include Indian tabla, Bengali lute,  Bansuri flute, African and Asian percussion, plus gospel choirs, New Orleans horns and full orchestra. After various experiments, abandoned and revisited sessions, the final album was more or less completed in a ten day frenzy, with strings being recorded in London, percussion in Hawaii and Joss pulling it together at her own Home Grown Studios in Devon. “So now we have an album with lots of different sounds on it,” she says, brightly. “It’s not massively, scarily different, because soul and hip hop are such a big part of what I do. But it’s a little departure, a bit of an adventure.”

At 27, Stone has been in music half her life. She won BBC talent show Star For A Night aged 13, signed to a major label at 15, and released her debut album, The Soul Sessions, aged 16. She has sold over 12 million albums worldwide, her American success paving the way for a new generation of British female soul singers. And yet, in many ways, Stone is still an unknown quantity with maverick tendencies, steadfastly refusing to conform to the industries idea of a beautiful, blonde pop star. “I have pissed a few people off,” she acknowledges. “If you go outside the box that people expect you to be in, it can make some people a uncomfortable.  But, hey ho. I don’t choose to be careful. I try not to let criticism or negativity even come into my mind.”

Water For Your Soul is her seventh album and will be released on Joss’s own Stone’d label, which she set up after her deal with EMI ended in 2011. Her idealistic approach shines through her new album. “Some people play music to pay their bills, some have a story to tell, some people make music to become famous. Every reason is valid, because it’s your own personal reason, and once you’ve figured it out, you know where you’re going. The reason I do it is because it fills me up. It’s like a drug to me. It’s like it tastes good and it smells good and it’s warm. If I’m walking down the street and I hear a busker playing, it makes my day better. And I guess I’m addicted to having that in my life. And that’s why I do it, to share that feeling with other people.”
