Knowsley Safari Park review

June 7, 2016 by Jenni

Knowsley safari park review

A couple of weeks ago we took Lucas to Knowsley Safari Park *. The safari park is an impressive 5 mile wild animal safari drive as well as a walk round park like you would expect of a zoo. It is currently home to over 750 fascinating animals.

Knowsley safari park

I really couldn’t have picked a worse day to go, it was pouring down to the point that we couldn’t see out of the windscreen driving there on the motorway. However, we didn’t let this dampen our spirits and were excited to see the animals up close.

Knowsley safari park

As you enter the drive, there are 3 paying kiosks to minimise the wait of entering. You follow the drive round and can either turn left to the car park to walk around or continue straight to go into the safari drive. There are also some toilets that you can park next to if you need to use them before going into the safari part. We went round the safari first, my favourite part of the drive is seeing the lions walking so close to the car in their enclosure and couldn’t wait to see Lucas’ reaction. Unfortunately, due to some changes in the lion group they weren’t in their normal enclosure as they needed to be monitored closely. We still saw them but it wasn’t the same experience as I have previously had, I will check before we go next whether they have been reintroduced.

Knowsley safari park

Due to the rain a lot of the animals were hiding, the deer were out in full force, nothing put them off! When we did spot the animals though, it was amazing, seeing them mixing together in a natural type habitat without any bars. We spotted a couple of Zebra, Rhinos with babies, Buffalo, Tigers and Camels. We didn’t go into the monkey enclosure as we were booked onto the Baboon Bus at 12. The safari drive took us about 40 minutes but would have taken longer if it wasn’t for the rain and if the lions had been out.

Knowsley safari park

The weather cheered up and we parked up and had a bit of our picnic before getting on the Baboon Bus. The bus takes you around the full safari, not just through the monkey enclosure. The bus driver introduced himself and said he wasn’t a tour guide but would tell us anything he could. Turns out he knew pretty much everything there was to know, he was very knowledgeable and friendly throughout the journey, pointing out the animals and telling us about them.

Knowsley safari park

Once we drove into the monkey enclosure they were jumping all over the bus, swinging from rope that hung from the bus. Lucas found it highly amusing, touching the window where the monkeys were. We spent about 20 minutes in the monkey enclosure and probably just under an hour and half on the bus.

Knowsley safari park

Once the bus pulled back into the park we had a walk around looking at the other animals. There are some more lions in the park, we also saw sea lions, tortoises, meerkats, birds of prey, elephants and my favourites, the giraffes. There is a bat cave but we decided not to venture in their until Lucas is a little older. There are also fairground rides and a train that you can go on, we will definitely go on the train next time we visit.

Knowsley safari park

We had a fab day out and even with the rain at the beginning it didn’t spoil it. There is plenty to see and do whatever the weather x

The giraffes are so cute! :D Looks like a fun day. I would be scared to handle meal worms anyway, even being over 6 :p

knowsley safari park bats

Hahaha....I must say I didn't mind either! I thought of you when I was in the bat enclosure - I think you'd have hated it!

Looks like a great day out and the workshop looks like a really interesting opportunity - would never have thought they fed meerkats with dog biscuits though!

Haha...I know! It was a surprise to us too! I don't know which were more horrible, the mealworms or the dog biscuits :D

Seriously, that's only £6.50 extra? Bargain, that looks amazing!! I am a bit scared of land snails though, no idea why, they just freak me out a bit...

:D I didn't touch the land snail - I figure I've had to peel enough from people's socks and my growing plants!

knowsley safari park bats

Not so keen on the creepy things but those giraffes look super cute!

:D The giraffe was really sweet. You can't touch them, but they look much more 'downy' than I ever realised :)

This sounds like an amazing day! We would love to do something like this.

It was amazing. Well worth the extra £6.50. It turns a trip to the Safari Park' into something really special :)

This looks amazing, and bats are one of my favourites too. Great to see that the workshops are not over priced either. Looks like a day you wont forget in a hurry!

We won't - it was really nice, a lovely day out :)

What a lovely day and one to remember too

Indeed. Hopefully both of the boys will remember it - I think they'll definitely remember the bats and meercats! :)

What a fab event! Cheap too - I never knew that's why the tongues were black #countrykids

It is an excellent price. I didn't even realise they had black tongues beforehand! :D

As above! I never knew their tongues were black for that reason:) a great post and I learnt something too!

Thanks very much Prudence! I learnt far more than I'd care to admit :D

knowsley safari park bats

What a fab session! I bet they will remember so much more by getting involved, than from looking at signs by the enclosures. We've looked after a couple of bats and they are the most amazing creatures. I have great respect for them. #CountryKids

Wow, that must have been an interesting thing to do! I once looked after a hedgehog, but it's not as cool :D

This looks fantastic, my boys would love something like this! What a great learning experience x #CountryKids

It was fantastic fun, it really was. The best way to learn! :)

What a fascinating day with so much to learn and do. Sounds a strange rule on the under 6's but at least you got up close to the giraffes. The bat enclosure looks amazing. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids

You're welcome and thank you for hosting. I don't understand why 6 is an age at which you are allowed to handle mealworms and feed giraffes, and the Rangers didn't really either, but usually rules are there for a reason, so you just go with it :)

This look so fun! We went to something similar and my kids love it! Great to get close to animals.

It is great - I can't imagine you and your kids enjoying the bats though Eileen - one woman got poo'ed on! :D

Awww I love Giraffes & its a dream of mine to get close to one! #countrykids

If you aren't anywhere near Knowsley I imagine other parks and zoos do similar things! It was a really great experience :)

What a brilliant idea, will have to investigate if any places do this closer to us, for when Monkey's older.

I think it's brilliant. I'm sure they'll remember it forever :)

Hissing cockroaches! OMG, I would have been screaming and running out of the room! What a great learning experience though, and a bargain price! #countrykids

Hahaha....the Hissing Cockroaches were a bit much - fortunately there were only 3 in the box....I think....

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I read every one and try my best to reply!

There is nothing more kids love than a day at the zoo.

Ice cream, tigers, amusement rides and a whole lot of fun is what Chester Zoo and Knowsley Safari Park offer.

But with both being in such local proximity, it can be hard to decide which attraction to visit.

Here's our guide to help you decide.

Chester Zoo

Convenient for those using public transport, the Number 1 bus from Chester bus exchange and the X8 bus from Chester station drop you directly at the zoo entrance.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and improve our understanding of you. This may include adverts from us and third parties based on our knowledge of you. More info

The Number 1 and X8 bus from Liverpool also have a direct drop off.

There is also a National Express coach to pick up visitors from further a-field.

Those coming in the car can expect free parking, but be warned, Sat Nav's get confused with the address.

Knowsley Safari Park

As the park is primarily a drive through safari, a car is most convenient.

Those who do come via public transport are advised to take a local taxi in order to get to the park.

In the school holidays, the 530 Safari Xpress leaves Liverpool city centre and takes you directly to the Safari Park.

For those who do not own a car, the baboon bus allows visitors to experience the full safari drive with your very own guide for an additional £5 per person.

Variety of animals

With over 500 species of animals, you can see a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertabrates.

Expect bats, birds of prey, ratites, rodents, ungulates, carnivores, honeybees and primates in their natural habitat.

Things to do for kids

A whole host of activities are available at the zoo from; souvenir making, face painting, climbing frame play area, mini golf, a fun ark, animal experiences and daily animal talks.

Similar to Chester Zoo you can watch the sea lion displays, keeper talks, animal encounters, birds of prey displays and amusement rides.

Food and drink

The zoo caters for every foodie.

Restaurants include; The Street Kitchen, a food court, Bembe kitchen and BBQ, market place and ice cream parlour, coffee house and plenty of kiosks.

As well as on-site restaurant, the Oasis, guests can bring your own picnic to eat at the park, visit the outdoor grill in the summer or grab an ice cream or a coffee.

It always pays to book in advance. If you do this, entrance to the zoo costs £16.36 for an adult, £13.18 for a child and two and under go free.

There is also a 10 percent discount for students and seniors.

This is a big difference from the price on the gate which is £26 for adults and £22 for children.

Carers with a disabled guest go free.

A special offer is taking place, as mums go free this Mother's Day , while all other tickets will cost just £10 until March 23.

Winter prices are currently £14.00 for an adult and £10.80 for a child.

If you're planning to visit at any other time, an adult ticket costs £15.75 if you book ahead online, or £17.50 on the gate.

A child (3+) ticket costs £12.15 or £13.50, as above, and kids under 3 go free.

There is also an upcoming Easter offer which enables visitors to 20% off ticket prices if booked in advance online.

Aimed at inclusivity for everyone, Chester Zoo works with Autism Together for visitors on the autistic spectrum.

There are also multi-sensory experiences for visitors with visual impairments.

Those with wheelchairs and limited mobility can relax, as the zoo can make provisions.

Aimed at providing an enjoyable day out for all, Knowsley offers parking for disabled, assistance dogs, baby changing facilities and a wheelchair/pushchair friendly entrance.
