Mass Effect 1: How to Go Back to the Normandy

Image of Zhiqing Wan

With the release of Mass Effect Legendary Edition for PC and consoles, new players and veterans can now experience the sci-fi trilogy with 4K visuals and improved framerates. The core of all three games does remain the same, though, which means that new players may get confused by some of the more obtuse mechanics in the game. Here’s how to go back to the Normandy in Mass Effect 1 .

The Normandy is the ship that Shepard commands in all three games, and it’s also where you get to talk to your squadmates one on one, and plan where to go next for your missions. However, whenever you do disembark on a planet, the game never really explains to you how you can get back to your ship.

Going Back to the Normandy in Mass Effect 1

You’ll usually be transported back to the Normandy automatically after completing a mission, but if you want to leave halfway, there’s a way to do so as well.

While on a planet surface, enter the Mako and press the Square button, or X if you’re on Xbox One. An onscreen prompt will pop up asking if you want to return to the Normandy, simply confirm your selection and you’ll be transported back to your ship, ready to depart to another planet.

If you’re in the Citadel, head to the C-Sec Academy under Wards locations by using the fast transit system, and take the central elevator up to the docking bay. You’ll find the Normandy docked there, and you can enter from the airlock.

That’s all you need to know about how to go back to the Normandy in Mass Effect 1 . Be sure to check our guide wiki for more tips and information on the game.

Resident evil 9 may already have sealed its protagonist's fate, ps plus free games for september 2024 explained.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is out now for consoles, packaging together three of the most critically acclaimed sci-fi RPGs ever with updated visuals and refined controls. For those that are experiencing the sci-fi epic for the first time, it can be a lot to take in at first. Once players complete one of the first missions that Mass Effect 1 has to offer, they are then taken to the Citadel , which can be quite confusing to navigate for first-timers. There are a lot of NPCs to speak to and a multitude of areas to scour through.

By following this guide, Mass Effect 1 players can learn how to leave the Citadel and fly to another locale by way of the Normandy. It may seem like a struggle at first, but once players know exactly how to get to the ship, it'll make their lives much easier.

RELATED:  Mass Effect 2: Where to Find Credit Chit

Around the Citadel , players should have noticed several fast travel terminals that are known as Citadel Rapid Transit. By interacting with these devices, players can quickly navigate to different sectors of the Citadel, and since it's a pretty vast area, the transit system can definitely come in handy. Once players go back to the Council and officially become a Spectre to finish off the mainline quest here, the Normandy will be opened up for Shephard.

Once at the Transit system, players should choose "Wards Locations" and then "C-Sec" to be taken to the academy. From there, enter the elevator that's right in the middle of the room to be taken to the docking bay. The Normandy will be on the left-hand side of this walkway that's in front of the elevator. After a brief cutscene, players will be back inside of the ship and can use it to get to a different destination. Players should to the Combat Information Center and use the Mass Effect  Galaxy Map .

It'll look like the Citadel is the only area that's able to be traveled to, but if players zoom out of the map a total of three times, a bunch of other locations will appear, and by selecting one of them, players can travel there and finally leave the Citadel.

Now that players are free to travel wherever they like, they'll be one step closer to stopping Saren from bringing back the Reapers .

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Spotlight: SSV Normandy SR-1

Spotlight is a semi-regular feature where the RPG Site team highlight and examine locations, characters, systems and features of RPGs that deserve retrospective recognition.

While a lot of RPGs have brilliant hub areas that players return to repeatedly throughout an adventure, I've found few as memorable and special as the SSV Normandy SR-1, Mass Effect's traveling home hub that becomes the personal vehicle of Commander Shepard a few hours into the game. Here, to celebrate N7 day 2015, we celebrate and look back on this iconic RPG vehicle.

me_normandy1.jpg

The Normandy is integral to the player's view of the Mass Effect universe - not just because it facilitates travel, but because it's where the player really fully assumes the role of Commander Shepard properly - not with big galaxy-altering decisions, but with smaller dialog choices in the meaningful personal conversations that take place there, slowly allowing players to build and understand the voice of 'their' Shepard between missions.

It's the first thing players see properly in the series, streaking through a Mass Relay, and in many ways it represents the state of the Mass Effect universe as players first enter it, the perfect light-touch introduction to the series' sprawling lore. A small first collaboration between Humans and Turians, conversations about the Normandy introduce the player to the concept of the First Contact War between the races, the following truce, and in envisioning the timing around its construction, exactly when and where the first Mass Effect title and its characters stand on a timeline compared to that major in-universe event.

While the Normandy proves a vital bit of context to the lore of the series merely through its design and utility, the vehicle ultimately only truly comes into its own when populated with Mass Effect's memorable cast of party members, each taking up a spot in their own personal favorite area of the ship.

Down in the lower decks, Tali feels most at home next to the engine while Ashley and Wrex stay close to the armory as possible. Garrus, lacking guns to calibrate, situates himself next to the next best thing, the Mako. Up above Kaiden chills in the mess area, while Liara takes up residence in the medical labs.

normandy_engine.png

Each of these locations speaks to the character in question - there's no backdrop more perfect for hearing Tali's backstory than next to a pulsating engine, for instance - and while Mass Effect lacks the dynamism its sequels would later introduce, with characters going about more business and moving about the ship more fully, there's much memorable in how the party appear aboard the Normandy in Mass Effect.

That main crew is backed up with several non-playable but no less important characters who keep the Normandy ticking over including Dr. Chakwas, XO Pressley, and of course Joker, the pilot. Joker's relationship with the ship in particular helps to imbue it with a sense of character long before Bioware saw fit to give it a voice or a body - and again speaks to just how well the ship is presented and written about within the narrative.

Later iterations of the Normandy would get bigger and would with that be populated by even more characters, but there's something about the intimacy of the Normandy and its simple three-tiered design that makes it far more accessible than later versions (even with those lengthy elevator rides) and yet far more impressive than the cramped confines of Knights of the Old Republic's Ebon Hawk, the Normandy's spiritual predecessor.

It'd be easy to perhaps credit all that made those moments aboard the Normandy great to the characters aboard it, but in truth it goes beyond that. The gorgeously sleek and iconic design of the ship's exterior and interior certainly aid that, the game ensuring it's given plenty of deserved visibility when arriving at planets and systems. Better still is the memorable music which somehow manages to loop through the entirety of the significant time you spend there without ever becoming an irritation while channeling the spirit of space exploration Mass Effect so encourages.

normandy_bridge1.png

Through repetition, the Normandy becomes home - players adopt a procedure when they arrive back based around an order in which they check in on their crewmates and their personal equipment locker. By the time the game reaches its final act and the ship is taken away from you, the player is itching to take it back just as much as Shepard and his crew. It's then, at that late hour, the Normandy truly becomes 'yours', its crew essentially mutinying from the Alliance in order to side with you on one final mission - with that, it further endears itself.

While the Normandy is actually in a sense the one to ultimately save the day in Mass Effect, the game's final action-packed moments filled with it performing aerial acrobatics without you even aboard, its greatest trick is saved for the sequel. Cruelly destroyed during the opening of the game, seeing a ship which you'd populated for some 40 hours or more split in two by an overwhelming force was a gut punch at the opening - and one even more impactful, arguably, than the fake-out of the death of Shepard him or herself.

The Normandy would prove too powerful an image for destruction, and lives on conceptually in a vastly different, much larger successor that survives through both subsequent games. The reveal of that rebuilt iteration remains one of my favorite iterations of the series, and proved a hugely uplifting moment after Mass Effect 2's downbeat opening hour or so. The SR-2 is magical too - but few home hubs in video games and few ships in science fiction will ever be as dear to me as the Normandy SR-1. I put it up there with the Enterprise, with Galactica, with the Millennium Falcon - and that's incredibly good company to keep.

Bioware certainly has their work cut out for them in providing the crew of Mass Effect Andromeda with a worthy successor.

Normandy (Mass Effect)

Normandy (Mass Effect)

Fictional spacecraft From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Normandy -class SR [lower-alpha 2] are two fictional spacecraft in the Mass Effect video game franchise. She first appears in Mass Effect as the SSV Normandy SR-1 , the product of a joint venture between the human Systems Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy, and described as the most advanced military stealth starship in the galaxy within the series. An improved version of the ship known as the Normandy SR-2 , though no longer a commissioned spaceship of the Alliance Navy, is later constructed by the anthropocentric paramilitary organization Cerberus and appears from Mass Effect 2 onwards. Both iterations of Normandy have Jeff "Joker" Moreau (voiced by Seth Green ) as the pilot in command , while the SR-2 is integrated with an artificial intelligence entity known as EDI (voiced by Tricia Helfer ). She functions as the primary means of transport and base of operations for the player, in the role of Spectre Commander Shepard , and their crew, as they travel throughout the Milky Way and fight hostile aliens such as the Reapers .

The Normandy has been praised by critics for its visual design, level design, and its appearance in the original Mass Effect trilogy, where it plays a pivotal role in the war against the Reapers and their servants.

Normandy SR-1

The Normandy derives her name from the Normandy landings of World War II . The initial Normandy was created in 2183 as an advanced prototype "deep scout" stealth frigate with help from the Turians , a race of aliens who were once hostile to humans. Most of her revolutionary technology is incorporated into her source of propulsion, the Tantalus drive core, which is also the source of her stealth capabilities. By temporarily "tucking in" and "storing" the heat energy produced within her hull to evade detection, Normandy can travel undetected or drift passively for a lengthy time of observation, though this technique is not without danger. The stored heat must eventually be released, otherwise the ship risks cooking her own crew alive. To aid in the stealth, the Tantalus drive allows Normandy to move without the use of heat-emitting thrusters. The Normandy is armed with GARDIAN (General ARea Defensive Integration Anti-spacecraft Network) point defense lasers, a spinal mass accelerator cannon, and advanced Javelin disruptor torpedoes, as well as kinetic barriers.

Normandy SR-2

With great labor and elaborate secrecy, Normandy SR-2 was built by Cerberus to be a larger, more powerful vessel upon the original's destruction. Envisioned with a more hospitable interior design based on the layout of the original (with five decks compared to SR-1's three), more crew-oriented comforts and civilian accommodations (like leather seats, a small kitchen area, and two observation decks, one of which contains a bar) are available. She features greater space in living quarters, research laboratory, and cargo bay. She now possesses shuttles that can be used for more precise landings the spacecraft cannot attempt. The list of upgrades is numerous, which the player has the option of researching and applying in the second and third games. Combined with her speed and maneuverability, Normandy is now capable of significant offensive feats, equipped with Javelin disruptor torpedoes, point-defense lasers, and the Thanix cannon, a Reaper-based weapon. She's even defensively great, thanks to the addition of kinetic barriers, deflective armor , and stronger shielding. Finally, Normandy is also given an onboard AI in the form of the "Enhanced Defense Intelligence", colloquially referred to as "EDI", who later becomes a squad member in Mass Effect 3 . [2] [3] EDI coordinates many of the ship's combat functions, assisting, and even supplanting human piloting if needed.

Cerberus's many alterations produced a craft nearly double the original's size and mass, now armed and armored with even more sophisticated tech. All this required an even larger Tantalus drive core to compensate. This new core is housed within a sphere which holds element zero and is technologically different from the original Tantalus core; the manner in which it generates an immense output of power for the ship is meant to evoke a super-collider . [4] The ship still retains the SR-1's stealth characteristics, but is now more sustainable. However, unlike the SR-1, the SR-2 can no longer land on every planet due to her increased mass, requiring shore parties to use a shuttle to get to a planet's surface.

The Normandy SR-2 first enters service in 2185, two years after the end of Mass Effect . The Illusive Man had Cerberus build the SR-2 as the headquarters of the Lazarus Cell —the newly-revived Commander Shepard and his/her team—to aid them in their mission to stop the Collectors ' galaxy-wide campaign of human abductions. The ship's communicator was modified to provide instantaneous contact with the Illusive Man. As part of the final mission of Mass Effect 2 , the severity of the damage Normandy receives while fighting the Collectors is heavily dependent on how many upgrades the player managed to research and purchase for the ship.

In Mass Effect 3 , Normandy , while not receiving any major modifications, undergoes a further retrofit in 2186; although the retrofits are not completed in time before the Reaper invasion, she is repainted in the Alliance Navy colors of blue and white after reentering the hands of the Systems Alliance on Earth following the events of Mass Effect 2: Arrival , becoming more like a military vessel once again. [3] In spite of her relatively small size compared to other starships in the series, the Normandy is Alliance's "tip of the spear" that punches well above her class, and continues to be touted as the fastest, the stealthiest, most advanced, and most iconic vessel of the Alliance fleet. She is the flagship that led the charge of united Citadel alien races in the Battle for Earth at the game's finale.

In Mass Effect , the SR-1 carries the M35 Mako , a six-wheeled infantry fighting vehicle equipped with thrusters, a 155mm mass accelerator cannon , and a coaxial machine gun . The Mako is designed to fit in the small cargo bays of Alliance scouting frigates such as Normandy . Its small size and low weight allow it to be easily deployed to virtually any world. In Mass Effect 2 , the Mako can be found at the crash site of the destroyed SSV Normandy on Alchera, partially encased in ice and rock but otherwise almost completely intact.

M-44 Hammerhead

In Mass Effect 2 , the SR-2 carries the M-44 Hammerhead , a hovering infantry fighting vehicle that functions as a replacement to the Mako . It is only usable in the DLC missions Firewalker and Overlord , and does not play a main story role, nor does it return in Mass Effect 3 .

UT-47 Kodiak Drop Shuttle

In Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 , interplanetary flight personnel carriers stored in the SR-2's cargo bay are two UT-47 Kodiak that can be used to make landings the new Normandy could not attempt. The A-model shuttles are employed significantly more in Mass Effect 3 , where they (along with the ship) are retrofitted to Alliance specs, repainted in Alliance colors, and are now armed with mass accelerator cannons on both sides of each craft. The Kodiak is nicknamed "Combat Cockroach" by Alliance marines because of its durability and looks.

The idea of the Normandy as a mobile hub which transported the party from planet to planet was inspired by the Ebon Hawk starship in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic , a previous BioWare game. [5] Early concepts of the ship explored the designs of a fighter jet, a cruiser, a smuggler's ship, and a stealth vessel, while a lot of drawing work was involved in visualizing the variety of machinery housed within the ship's interiors. [4] Normandy's final design references delta-wing fighters and the Concorde for an aggressive, futuristic look. [4] The ship is depicted with sufficient cargo space to store the Mako , and her sizable crew meant that the ship's interiors needed to be presented as a living space where crew members could live comfortably for months at a time. [4] When docking on space stations, Normandy is received by extendable arms which attach to the ship; the designers purposely never included visible landing gear on the Normandy as the ship is meant to hover. [4] Senior Art Director Derek Watts of BioWare stated in a mini-documentary that the "SSV" letters were originally written on the ship's hull, but the developers opted to remove them due to the fact that they would appear to say "ASS" if the ship ever flew upside down. [6]

The destruction of the Normandy SR-1 early in Mass Effect 2 allowed the team freedom to review and amend her design. [4] Ease of navigation of the ship's interior as well as a sense of familiarity for returning players were prioritized as the SR-2 is supposed to feel like a more technologically advanced version of the SR-1, albeit with increased space and rooms for up to one dozen squad mates that Shepard could recruit in Mass Effect 2 . [4] A "muscle car" element to the ship's painted exterior was considered in order to give Normandy a more aggressive feel than a typical spaceship or fighter craft. [4] Customization options for Normandy's exterior, which could have gone up to five levels, were ultimately cut as scenes in outer space would not benefit from graphical quality produced by pre-rendering. Other elements which have been adjusted include the tail fins, the placement of the engine core, and the size of the wings in proportion to the fuselage. [4] The final look for the Normandy SR-2 is a sleeker exterior, a larger interior with multiple floors, and her cockpit layout had been overhauled to improve recognition. [4] For Mass Effect 3 , the design team wanted to convey the sense that Normandy had been captured and studied by the Alliance; red and blue color changes were originally thrown into concept to show that the ship is always in high alert as it is operating during wartime. [4] A subplot involving an assassin or saboteur breaking into Shepard's quarters was considered during production, but was ultimately cut from the game's final release. [4]

Dark Horse created a 6 1/4" scale model of the Normandy SR-2 in 2011. [7]

Dark Horse Direct created a 14" replica of the Mass Effect: Normandy SR-1 and Mass Effect: Cerberus Normandy SR-2 [8]

The Normandy was praised from a design standpoint, with Andy Kelly of PC Gamer stating that her "hard 70's sci-fi edge" looks "cool", as well as "cold and functional". However, he also noted that her interior ambiance changed in subsequent games, becoming more warm and inviting after she was rebuilt by Cerberus, and again becoming colder and less comfortable in its final incarnation. [3] Edge magazine stated that both Normandy vessels were "remarkable", and that the ship's main power lies in character interactions. The ability to optionally explore the ship and speak to crew members was a "crucial" point due to the game's emphasis on choice. [2] Alex Donaldson of RPG Site stated that he found few hub areas "as memorable and special" as the Normandy SR-1, calling it "integral to the player's view of the Mass Effect universe" . [9]

EDI has been discussed within the context of her role as the AI personification of the Normandy SR-2. PC Gamer lauded EDI's characterization as an AI character and discussed her gameplay utility of being an actual spaceship as part of her role as a squadmate. [10] [11]

Kat Bailey of USgamer claimed the Sanctuary 3 ship of Borderlands 3 to be inspired by the Normandy , although she also noted that comparing it to the "iconic" Normandy "feels a little sacrilegious". [12]

SSV Normandy SR-1, the first iteration of the ship, is featured as an easter egg in the science fiction survival game No Man's Sky as part of a crossover event in May 2021. [13]

The SSV Normandy

The SSV Normandy SR-1 ( S ystems Alliance S pace V ehicle Normandy S tealth R econnaissance -1 ) was a Systems Alliance starship . She is a prototype "deep scout" frigate , first of the eponymous Normandy class, co-developed by the Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy with the sponsorship of the Citadel Council . She is optimized for solo reconnaissance missions deep within unstable regions, using state-of-the-art stealth technology powered by an experimental drive core.

Commissioned in 2183, the Normandy was initially commanded by an Alliance officer named Elli Zander. After Zander came into conflict with turian chief engineer Octavio Tatum over the limits of the ship's drive core, Zander was removed and David Anderson placed in command. Shortly thereafter, the Normandy was handed over to Commander Shepard when the Commander became the first human Spectre , and served as Shepard's main source of transportation and base of operations.

The Normandy is named after the Battle of Normandy in 1944, a pivotal battle of the Second World War .

Internal Layout [ ]

The Normandy is built on three main decks:

Command Deck [ ]

The Normandy's command deck

This contains the bridge in the bow (where Shepard can talk with Joker ), the airlock, the CIC containing the galaxy map (overseen by Navigator Pressly ), and the comm room towards the stern. The comm room also serves as a conference room for debriefing after missions, and allows Shepard to privately consult with the Citadel Council.

The Comm Room

The Combat Information Center (CIC) of the Normandy is unusual. Alliance ships usually place commanding officers in the middle of the room, to facilitate communication with subordinates, but the CO's station in the Normandy's CIC is at the back. This is because the Normandy has a turian design and their commanders prefer to look over their subordinates rather than be in the midst of them; the engineers wanted to observe how well it functioned within the human command structure. When necessary, the Normandy's officers can utilize unique suit radios to communicate with the ship's operators. The cockpit area is equipped with an internal kinetic barrier, designed to protect the pilot from exposure to vacuum if air pressure is lost in the CIC.

Quarters [ ]

The second deck, composed primarily of living quarters, may be reached by descending one of the two stairwells located on either side of the CIC.

The mess

This is the location of Normandy's habitation deck containing the mess, crew sleeper pods, the captain's private cabin and office, escape pod hatches, and the medical room where Doctor Chakwas can be found. Liara T'Soni spends her time in the lab and storage room at the back. The medical room also contains a medi-gel dispenser.

Kaidan Alenko can be found at a control panel in front of the sleeper pods. Shepard's personal equipment locker is located directly across from Kaidan.

Shepard's Locker is stocked with free gear when:

  • Shepard first boards the Normandy toward the end of Citadel: Expose Saren . Locker contents are not dependent on Shepard's level if their level increases later.
  • Merely going to the system will not stock the locker. Shepard must land on the planet. In the case of Therum, where Shepard cannot leave until the mission is complete, the locker will therefore be accessible only after the mission.
  • These locker contents are dependent on Shepard's current level. Therefore, if Shepard picks up the gear later at a higher level, it will be higher-graded gear.

Although the same locker is apparently stocked (the other three are non-interactive), there is a separate locker stocked for the Citadel and each of the mission worlds. Therefore, Shepard can return to a mission world later to pick up gear when the Commander is of a higher level. For example, if Shepard lands on Noveria but leaves immediately without performing any missions, the "Noveria locker" is available, but the gear need not be taken. Shepard can then go to Feros, and a "Feros locker" is made available although it is the same interactive locker in the Quarters. Shepard can take the gear while at Feros, then go back to again to Noveria and pick up gear from their locker again.

Shepard can only take gear from each locker once. For example, once gear is picked up from the "Noveria locker", going to Noveria again later will not restock the locker.

Engineering and Storage [ ]

Engineering

An elevator located in the quarters can be used to descend to the engineering and storage sections of the Normandy. The M35 Mako is stored on this level, Ashley Williams is cleaning rifles next to the squad lockers, Garrus Vakarian is attending to the Mako, and Urdnot Wrex is idly observing opposite the Mako. Across from Wrex is the Alliance Requisition Officer , who can sell Shepard new equipment.

Opposite the garage, a door leads to the engineering section proper containing the Normandy's drive core. Here Shepard can find Engineer Adams and Tali'Zorah nar Rayya observing and maintaining the core's functional integrity.

Technology [ ]

The Tantalus Core

The Normandy's IES (internal emission sink) stealth system is her most notable feature. For centuries, it was assumed that starship stealth was impossible. The heat generated by routine shipboard operations is easily detectable against the near absolute zero background temperature of space. The Normandy, however, is able to temporarily "store" this heat in lithium heat sinks deep within the hull.

The IES stealth system has a few limitations: The system doesn't work during FTL flight because this blue-shifts the Normandy's emissions beyond the sinks' ability to store, and even while out of FTL, any visual scan (i.e. looking out of a window) will reveal her. However, this is rare since most ships rely on scanners rather than visual contact and spotting another ship in space is difficult. The Normandy can go to 'silent running' for around 2-3 hours, or drift passively through a system for days before having to vent and give away her position. The stored heat must eventually be radiated, or it will build up to levels capable of cooking the crew alive.

The stealth system is powered by an experimental piece of equipment called the Tantalus Drive Core which is, proportionally, about twice the size of any other ship's core - Tali'Zorah nar Rayya is fascinated with how the Alliance managed to fit it into such a compact vessel. Joker mentions the oversized drive core affects the Normandy's balance, but it's nothing he can't handle. The Tantalus drive generates mass concentrations that the Normandy "falls into", allowing her to move without the use of heat-emitting thrusters. The core not only makes the Normandy quiet and fast, but also means she can run at FTL speed for much longer before having to discharge the drive. It is staggeringly expensive at 120 billion credits , or equivalent to the drive core costs of 12,000 fighters according to Rear Admiral Mikhailovich .

Should the Normandy’s design prove useful in field tests, it is expected that a follow-up class incorporating "lessons learned" will be produced.

Like all frigates, the Normandy is equipped with GARDIAN point defense lasers, kinetic barriers , and a spinal mass accelerator cannon. It may also be equipped with advanced Javelin dual disruptor torpedoes .

Mass Effect [ ]

During her shakedown run , the Normandy launched from Arcturus and headed to Eden Prime to covertly recover the Prothean Beacon that had been unearthed on the planet. Unfortunately, a surprise geth attack complicated the mission and the beacon was destroyed. The Normandy then travelled to the Citadel , where Captain Anderson resigned as commanding officer, allowing Shepard to assume command in his place.

The Normandy in battle

Though Shepard works for the Citadel , the Normandy is still considered to be under Alliance jurisdiction, and her unique design means Shepard is often asked to complete missions for Steven Hackett , especially those requiring discretion. The Normandy is also the subject of an inspection by Rear Admiral Mikhailovich , who is annoyed that she was given to Shepard rather than being assigned to his flotilla as was intended. He refers to the Normandy as being 'over-designed', too expensive (costing as much as a heavy cruiser ), and having no practical use. In response, Shepard can correct him and defend the Normandy's innovations. Joker's handling of the Normandy saves Shepard on several occasions: providing an extraction from Therum ; dropping the Mako "under the radar" of the AA guns on Virmire , avoiding the following nuclear explosion; and performing a supposedly impossible Mako insertion on Ilos , among others.

The Normandy's stealth systems made her the only ship that could get Shepard into the Terminus Systems undetected, to pursue Saren Arterius to Ilos, but the Council refused to take such a risk, and Ambassador Donnel Udina locked out the ship's systems remotely. With Captain Anderson's help, Shepard stole the Normandy and took her to Ilos, where Joker dropped the team safely in the Mako before rendezvousing with the Fifth Fleet in the Andura sector.

During the Battle of the Citadel, the Normandy led the assault against Sovereign and distinguished herself with her impressive speed and maneuverability, which, once Shepard had disabled the Reaper 's shields, allowed her to destroy Sovereign. After the battle, Shepard took the Normandy out into space to find a way to stop the Reapers.

Mass Effect 2 [ ]

Escape pod launching from the doomed SR-1

The Normandy is shown patrolling the Omega Nebula for geth , near the planet Alchera . An unidentifiable starship suddenly appears and moves to intercept the Normandy, despite the frigate's stealth systems being active. Realizing that the ship is hostile, Joker initiates evasive maneuvers. The pursuing ship unleashes a barrage of beam weaponry that easily penetrates the Normandy's defenses. The Normandy's kinetic barriers and weapon systems are knocked out with a single hit. Within seconds, the Normandy is crippled as more hits breach the upper deck of the ship and destroy one of the starboard engine nacelles.

The sudden attack claims the lives of over twenty crew members, Navigator Pressly among them. The order is given to abandon ship and the surviving crew evacuate the ship via escape pods. Commander Shepard stays behind to save Joker , who is still desperately trying to pilot the disintegrating ship. Shepard manages to place Joker in the last escape pod as their attacker makes a final pass on the Normandy, completely destroying the ship. While Joker's pod is successfully ejected, Shepard is knocked into space by the final explosion and drifts into the orbit of Alchera along with debris from the Normandy.

Within the next two years, Commander Shepard's body is recovered and revived through the Lazarus Project by the pro-human black ops organization Cerberus . They give Shepard command of a new ship similar in design to the Normandy SR-1 but larger and bearing the insignia of Cerberus. Shepard and Joker decide to designate this new ship the Normandy SR-2 in honor of the original Normandy.

SSV Normandy is destroyed

The new Normandy is nearly twice the size of the original, comprising five decks, compared to the SR-1's three decks. If Shepard asks the ship's artificial intelligence how Cerberus managed to obtain the confidential schematics for the Normandy SR-1 to build the SR-2, it is revealed that Cerberus used their substantial influence to jump-start the Alliance's decision to build the original SR-1 in the first place, and subsequently obtain the secrets of advanced turian technology that the project required for themselves.

Throughout the rest of 2185, Commander Shepard uses the new Normandy to scour the galaxy looking for the best biotics , scientists and warriors in an effort to build a team capable of taking on the Collectors and putting an end to their galaxy-wide campaign of mass human abductions.

NormandyDecal

  • The Normandy's virtual intelligence (heard only during the "profile reconstruction" sequence of character creation, when entering or exiting the airlock, and in Bring Down the Sky) is voiced by Belinda Cornish .
  • According to Ashley's sister, Sarah, the Alliance broadcast a news video about the Normandy on the extranet which featured some of her crew members.
  • Sometime after the Battle of the Citadel, a console is added to the end of the line of sleeper pods as can be seen in Shepard's first appearance in Mass Effect 2.
  • The Normandy is not the only ship of her class that the Alliance has constructed. A Citadel NewsNet broadcast in Mass Effect 2 mentions that a "Normandy-class" stealth frigate, the SSV Ain Jalut , was used by the Alliance to launch a raid upon a batarian colony world.
  • STG agents, on orders from Sur'Kesh, procured schematics of the SSV Normandy's stealth systems to develop dreadnoughts with stealth capabilities that serve with the Salarian First Fleet .
  • In-game, the Normandy is substantially larger on the inside than on the outside.
  • According to The Art of the Mass Effect Universe , the SSV Normandy was based on delta wing fighter planes and the Concorde .
  • The periodic visual and audio effects of the Normandy's drive core pulsating only occur when the player is looking almost directly at the core.

ME1 cut workbench

At some point during Mass Effect's development, a workbench was available in the garage. When interacted with, it would apparently allow Shepard to spend omni-gel to craft many types of gear. [1]

  11. How does the Normandy move through space? : r/masseffect

Standard travel still uses thrusters, that is why the Normandy has heat sinks for its stealth system, taking the heat from the thrusters. Current theory has a formula that calculates effective mass by having delta m = blah blah blah/C 2 - v 2 and it's that bottom bit that's important.
