One Day in Nusa Penida – The Perfect Self-Guided Itinerary

Nusa Penida is a small island off the coast of Bali, Indonesia . It’s home to the famous Kelingking beach, also known as T-Rex beach or bay. Many people join a tour from Bali, but if you are comfortable driving a motorbike, you can easily do it yourself too. If you only have one day in Nusa Penida, follow the itinerary below and visit all the highlights in only one day.

This itinerary is also perfect for those of you who have more time to spend in Nusa Penida. That means you can take it slower and maybe at a snorkeling tour to your itinerary too.

  • How to get to Nusa Penida

Where to stay on Nusa Penida

Where to eat on nusa penida, how to get around nusa penida, swimming at nusa penida, diamond beach, stop 2: tembeling beach and forest, stop 3: kelingking beach, stop 4: broken beach and angels billabong, stop 5: crystal bay, stop 6: garmat bay, stop 7: sunset.

Tip: Even though it’s technically possible to do this itinerary from Bali, it’s really rushed and you won’t have much time to enjoy each place. It’s a pretty full itinerary for one day, and you don’t want to be stressing about being able to catch the boat back to Bali.

How to get to Nusa Pendia

Fast boats leave throughout the day from Bali’s Sanur Port , which is the most common way of getting there. Prices vary amongst agencies, the cheapest I found was 150.000 Rp. one way (about € 9/$9.50) with Angels Billabong and Idola. You can also take the public slower boat from Padangbai , which is only 31.000 Rp (less than 2 EUR/USD). This is a great option if you’re coming from Sidemen or Amed for example. If you need to take a Grab/Gojek from Sanur in order to get here, I wouldn’t worry about it because it’ll work out the same price (for 2 people) and it’s a lot more hassle. There are fast boats to and from Lombok and the Gili Islands too. Semaya One is the cheapest with 250,000 Rp. Note that Nusa Penida has 3 different ports, so pay attention to this when you pick your boat/accommodation. Starfish and Angels Billabong serve the Toya Pakeh port, Idola and the public ferry Sampalan and Semaya One has it’s own pier close to the Sampalan port. Toya Pakeh and Sampalan ports are a 15-20 minute motorbike ride away from each other.

I recommend staying in one of the port areas if you are only going to be here for one day. We stayed at D’Kubon , which was really good value for money. It’s also conveniently located right in front of the Semaya One pier (and walking distance from Sampalan). They have a small pool and a simple breakfast is included. The Tropical Brew café in front is owned by the owner’s son and makes delicious smoothie bowls and coffees.

Besides Tropical Brew for smoothie bowls and coffee, Nemu Kitchen is the one and only place to go. If you’re staying at D’Kubon Palace, it’s literally just down the road. They have a very wide variety of different cuisines and everything is just delicious. And very reasonably priced. The staff is also super friendly and the whole atmosphere is just great. They have a cocktail happy hour in the evening too, and the cocktails are as good as their food.

The only option to get around Nusa Penida yourself is by renting a motorbike . It’s not possible to rent a car as a tourist, only motorbikes. You can rent one for as little as 70.000-80.000 Rp. a day (4-5 EUR/USD. Make sure to explicitly ask for helmets, as they don’t always give them to you. We rented our bike for 70,000 Rp. a day at Sampalan harbor. Rent the bike the day you arrive, so you can start early tomorrow. If you’re not comfortable driving a motorbike, it’s best to join a tour or hire a car and driver for the day. The roads are not in great condition and they are quite narrow. With the many curves in the road, the potholes, and the huge amount of big cars on the road, driving becomes a challenge.

Nusa Penida’s beaches are more for taking pictures than swimming. The currents here are incredibly strong and dangerous. The most famous beaches Kelingking and Diamond Beach are NOT recommended for swimming. If you are a very confident swimmer and you are used to swimming in strong currents, you could get away with it. But many people get into the water overly confident and get into trouble. We spent quite some time on the island and saw many people nearly drown. Some managed to get out themselves, others had to be rescued. I don’t want to think about the amount of people who weren’t so lucky and drowned here. So be very careful here and don’t think it won’t happen to you, that’s what those other people thought too.

There are some places on the island that are better suited for swimming if the tides allow. I will indicate those in the itinerary below. However, if your main idea is to chill on a beach and to go swimming and snorkeling, the Gili Islands are better suited for you.

One day in Nusa Penida itinerary

Leave your hotel early in the morning, to make the most out of your day. If you didn’t rent a motorbike yet, do so the moment they open. Note that in order to visit all locations on the map below, you’ll need about 4 hours of driving time. If you want to spend an hour in each place too, it’s going to be a 10-hour day. If this sounds like a bit too much for you, you can easily spread this itinerary over 1.5 or 2 days and go on a more relaxed pace.

It’s a circular route, so you can start from anywhere. If you want to see the sunrise and/or sunset, it’s best to start with Diamond Beach and go clockwise.

Stop 1: Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

Diamond Beach is prettiest in the morning, as the sun hits the beach and the water. The colors are at their best early in the day. Another plus is that there are not so many people yet. This is the only beach on the island for which you need to pay entry in addition to parking (at the time of writing). Parking is 5,000 Rp per bike and the entry is 25,000 per person. It’s the same way to both Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach, the entrance is for both beaches. No need to pay again.

It’s only possible to go down to Diamond Beach when the tide is low. If the tide is at its highest, the beach disappears. But if the tide is low enough, it’s possible to make your way down. You do need to go down very narrow and busy stairs. It’s already quite difficult for people to pass each other and unfortunately, Instagram has made the top part of the stairs a photo hotspot. So many people want to take their picture here, blocking the way for people wanting to go up and down. Especially later in the day. At the lower part of the stairs, you’ll need to use a rope to help you get down and back up, as the steps here are too eroded to just walk. It’s not so difficult, but some people get nervous and need to take their time, causing a queue here.

So by going early you can avoid all of this and take your picture on the stairs without blocking others if you want to. There are plenty of other nice viewpoints on the cliff where you can take pictures too.

Diamond beach, Nusa Penida

Atuh beach is the beach right next to Diamond Beach. The beach you see on your left hand side when you make your way to the beaches.

Contrary to Diamond Beach, Atuh is actually nicer at high tide as the water covers all the rocks that are in front of the beach. The stairs going down to Atuh are wider and in a better state than the stairs to Diamond Beach, making it a lot easier to visit this beach.

Atuh is one of the few beaches on Nusa Penida that is good for swimming. The rock formations in front break most of the waves, so the current is not so strong here. If the tide is low the water is too far back to swim. But at higher tide, Atuh provides a nice swimming spot.  Still, be careful of course, and only enter the water if you know how to swim.

nusa penida self tour

This part is also home to the famous treehouse . One of the many Instagram hotspots of Nusa Penida. There is also a really nice viewpoint on the cliff between Atuh and Diamond Beach, from where you can occasionally see turtles and manta’s swimming below. Especially on the side of Atuh Beach.

The next stop on this itinerary is Tembeling Beach and Forest. As the name already indicates, you’re passing a forest, which leads to a small beach. The best part of Tembeling is it’s fresh waterhole though. It’s only small, so for this spot too: the earlier the better.

Note that you’ll need to park your bike on the main road already, not where I put the pin on the map. I think that if you really insist they will let you pass and drive on your own, but the road is very narrow, there are some steep parts and it’s generally in really bad condition. So the guys at the parking will tell you it’s not possible to drive down, and you’ll either need to walk or take one of their motor taxi’s down. We walked, and it took us about half an hour.

The fresh waterhole at Tembeling Beach and Forest

Kelingking Beach is the most iconic of Nusa Penida’s beaches. It’s the picture that pops up everywhere when you search for Nusa Penida. This beach is actually best enjoyed from above, especially if you only have one day to explore Nusa Penida. Getting down is very tricky. If you thought Diamond Beach was challenging, it’s better to not attempt to go down to this beach. Also, if you only have one day and you want to visit all the places that I mentioned here, you probably won’t have enough time to go down this one.

If you do decide to go down, do so very carefully. The first part is fine, the steps are well carved and it’s not so difficult. But then, the stairs turn toward the right and slowly disappear. The steps become less and less clear until they completely disappear and you’re climbing down rocks. Do consider wearing sneakers if you’re planning on going down. Otherwise, go barefoot. It’s a long, challenging, and crowded way down, but once you’re down the beach is really pretty. But unfortunately not suited for swimming. Again, if you’re super confident swimming in these kinds of waters you’ll be fine, but if not please don’t try. It’s not worth the risk.

Kelingking Beach is the most iconic beach of Nusa Penida

Broken Beach is a beach with a beautiful arch which you an cross. It provides really nice views, but it’s not possible to go down to this beach. If you want to swim, you can do so at Angel’s Billabong, which is a natural infinity pool. It is only safe to swim here during low tide, however. At high tide, waves crash into the pool and leave with so much force, that they can drag you out. So only swim here at low tide and stay a safe distance from the edge of the pool. Waves can be unpredictable, even at low tide.

Broken Beach, Nusa Penida

Crystal Bay is the easiest to get to of all the places in this itinerary. It’s not the nicest beach, as it’s quite small and super commercial. It is however the best place to have lunch on the beach, as there are plenty of warungs here. It’s also one of the few places where you can swim at Nusa Penida. So if you want something to eat or drink and go for a swim, this is your stop. If not, I’d say it’s better to spend some more time at the other places in this itinerary and skip Crystal Bay.

Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida

If you didn’t like the sound of Crystal Bay, but do have time for an extra stop, head to Garmat Bay instead. This beach is a lot more natural. And if the tide is high enough, you can swim here. It’s really good for snorkeling actually! But, it’s only possible to enter the water from the beach at high tide. At low tide the water pulls back so far and the corals are exposed. So you’d have to walk over the living corals to get to the water, damaging them at the very least, and possibly killing them. I’ve seen people do it, but please don’t. Just because other people do it, doesn’t mean it’s ok. They might not know, or don’t care. But you’d damage the very thing you’re so excited to see.

Garmat Bay is a lot more natural than Crystal Bay

So I didn’t mark this one, as it kind of depends on where on the island you are at the time of sunset. Garmat Bay doesn’t have a nice view for sunset, it gets blocked by rocks. But you can watch the sunset from the Broken Beach area, or find a nice beach bar between Toya Pakeh Harbor and Sampalan Harbor. It might not have the perfect view of the sun dropping behind the water, but you’ll find a nice place to enjoy the sunset, with Bali as a backdrop.

This was: One Day in Nusa Penida – The perfect self-guided itinerary

If you have more time than just one day to spend on Nusa Penida, I do recommend spreading the itinerary over 2 days. This gives you some extra time to enjoy the beaches as some are a little challenging to get to. This also allows you to go down to Diamond Beach and Kelingking Beach without feeling too rushed.

Snorkeling with manta rays is a popular thing to do in Nusa Penida, which I didn’t include in this itinerary. Because I have to say, I can’t really recommend it. We only heard positive things about it, but when we got there, it was just sooo crowded! And you only get 15 minutes to snorkel with them. So it’s kind of like, get in, get some footage, and get out. It was definitely not the experience I wanted or expected, as there was no time or space to really observe these beautiful animals and enjoy their presence. There are too many people around and it all feels a bit stressful.

There are some diving schools on the island though, so if you really want to go, I recommend talking to them to see if they can offer you a better experience. They might give you more time and maybe a different time of day too. Or, you could opt for a snorkeling tour that doesn’t include Manta Point and enjoy the beautiful corals and fish around the island. We actually enjoyed the corals a lot more than the manta’s.

17 Jun Nusa Penida Travel Guide: Perfect for Budget and Solo Travelers!

Nusa Pendia

Over the years as pictures of the curved spine of Kelingking Beach have gone viral online, Nusa Penida has become a main attraction to visiting Indonesia. A part of a a trio of smallers islands, Nusa Pendia sits at the southeast coast of the main island of Bali.  Here you will find less Western restaurants, a much quieter atmosphere, some untouched wilderness, and the iconic, epic coastlines!

In this travel guide you can find all the information needed to plan your own trip:

Ways to Experience Nusa Penida

A trip to Nusa Penida can be experienced in different ways. For most people, visiting Nusa Penida means a taking a guided day trip tour from Bali. However, it’s becoming increasingly popular to go to Nusa Penida on your own, stay a few days and explore at your leisure time. There are pros and cons to both options and the way in which you decide to visit Nusa Penida greatly depends on any time limitations and how you like to travel.

Visiting On Your Own

Flexible planning, you’re on your own time

More planning involved on your part

Need to arrange getting to Nusa Penida

Must rent a motorbike or hire a driver

Ability to stay several days and explore the island in its entirety and experience a quiet paradise

Opportunity to explore many beautiful places, Nusa Penida is known for Kelingking Beach but there’s so much more

Visiting on a Tour

Structured day, possibly with a group depending on the tour

Usually package deal, everything planned for you

Transportation to the island usually included

Transportation on the island included

Tours are typically day tours from Bali without the option of staying on Nusa Penida

Tours usually only take you to the popular spots. And even if given the ability to choose where to go, your options are limited in just one day because of how far locations are from one another

In terms of price comparison, it depends. Exploring for one day on your own, could very well be much cheaper than a day tour package (depending on the tour). However, if you stay a few days, obviously the costs go up but you’re getting more experiences than a day tour.

As I mentioned, there are pros and cons to both, so choose whichever suits you best! Either way there’s no doubt you will enjoy this majestic island.

Booking a Day Trip Tour to Nusa Penida

A day trip can be taken on your own to the island, however with a shorter amount of time an organized tour may be more worth it.

Many days tours are offered by street vendors and hotels in Bali. However, you can also book ahead of time online. Below are some great options on GetYourGuide

Getting to and from Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is small island close to the mainland of Bali; to get there it is about a 30 minute boat ride from Sanur Harbor (on Bali). However, it can also be accessed from Nusa Lembongan or from Lombok. The most popular way is from Bali though.

Booking a Boat Ticket to Nusa Penida from Bali

*If you are taking a tour to Nusa Penida, boat transportation is usually included, but double check.

Securing a boat ticket to Nusa Penida can be done in many ways. Some hotels will help you arrange it, which may include pick up from the hotel and the boat to Nusa Penida.

You can also book online at 12Go  or Klook , both of which are very reliable for all modes of transportation. Keep in mind, if you do book online, this should be done at least a day in advance. The longer you wait, the price usually goes up.

The other option is the old school way, booking from a vendor. There are many vendors on the streets within Bali who will provide transportation and tours to Nusa Penida. Or you can wing it, and show up to Sanur Harbor and buy your ticket from there. Boats and ferries leave everyday, I would just recommend showing up early.

Whichever way you buy your ticket though, I recommend comparing prices across the board and weighing your options. Some ways of booking may be more expensive than others, however, some may include transportation to Sanur Harbor.

What I did:

I booked a ticket for a speedboat online at Klook , the day before, which was 165,000 IDR (~$12 USD). I actually ended up missing my boat due to oversleeping and not reading the fine print about arriving early, but they just stuck me on the next boat leaving at no extra cost, so no problem. Don’t panic if this happens to you!

Getting to Nusa Penida

In summary..

Ways to Book a Boat Ticket to Nusa Penida:

  • At your hotel
  • From a street vendor
  • Online at 12Go or Klook

Tips When Booking:

  • Compare prices
  • Haggle/bargain if you can
  • Consider the pros and cons and price differences of booking a ticket that includes transportation to the harbor vs. getting there on your own
  • Book as early as possible to get a better price
  • Check your ticket for the time you’re supposed to arrive at the harbor

Getting to Sanur Harbor

Most speedboats and ferries to Nusa Penida will leave from Sanur Harbor. When purchasing your ticket, I would double check that this is your departure point. After doing so, I would check Google Maps to see how far away you are from Sanur Harbor, because given its location and Bali traffic, it might take you up to 45 minutes drive to get there. This detail is important to planning your arrival time so you don’t miss your boat (like me lol!).

If you’re taking a tour, most likely it will provide hotel pickup to the harbor, therefore you will not need to worry about the logistics of getting there. Make sure this is the case though.

If you are not on a tour, the cheapest way to reach Sanur Harbor is using the GoJek or Grab   app. You can also take a taxi, this is a good option to support locals.

When you arrive at Sanur Harbor, there’s a small fee for drivers to enter the parking lot, to avoid this fee just have them drop you off outside of it and walk in. Be sure to arrive early at the harbor before your boat leaves. And don’t worry if you missed breakfast, there’s a lot of places to buy food and drink at the harbor!

nusa penida self tour

Arriving at Nusa Penida

After about 30 minutes on a speedboat, you will arrive at Nusa Penida. If you’re on a tour, a vehicle will be waiting for you.

Otherwise, unless you have prior arrangements, at the harbor you can bargain with someone to rent a motorbike or catch a ride to your hotel or next destination. Don’t worry about no one being there, if anything its overwhelming how many people bombard you with offers. I wasn’t ready for this, so keep a cool head, b e prepared to be rushed and given higher prices,  and use your haggling skills!

If you decide pay a driver, depending on where your hotel or hostel is on Nusa Penida, it’s about 100,000 IDR (~$7 USD) to get there with one of the drivers from the port.  (2019 price)

From Nusa Penida Back to Bali

If you booked a tour, your transportation back will obviously be covered. However, if not you simply go about it the same way you did to get there. Hotels on Nusa Penida will have information about returning back to Bali, or you can book online on 12Go .

Sanur Harbor to Nusa Penida

Transportation on the island

How to get around Nusa Penida is a detail I did not consider before coming and a lot of people don’t. Unlike Bali there are no rideshares, public transportation, or taxis. It’s either you rent a motorbike or car yourself, or you have a private driver.

Renting a motorbike

Renting a motorbike on Nusa Penida is a popular option, especially for backpackers on a budget staying a few days. But although it’s a cheap option, there is one thing to consider: the roads on Nusa Penida are notorious for being really, really bad. There are tons of potholes and many portions of the road are just torn up gravel, most of which are up and down steep hills and curvy roads.

I know many people think they’re invincible, but seriously driving a motorbike in Nusa Penida is only for experienced drivers. If you do opt to rent a motorbike, be extremely cautious, wear a helmet, and have travel insurance –  I saw a lot  of accidents.

To rent a motorbike, you can do so from your accommodation, from a vendor, from the harbor when you arrive OR online here . Motorbikes should be around 75,000 IDR ($5 USD) per day.

nusa penida self tour

Renting a motorbike with a driver

When I visited Nusa Penida, I had never driven a motorbike in my life. When I heard about the roads, I knew it would be really stupid to try on my own. Now after seeing those roads, I know I could have gotten really hurt, even if I did know how to drive.

But being on a budget, I didn’t want to break the bank getting a private car to go around the island by myself, so I actually paid someone working at my hostel to drive me around on their motorbike. It was a lot of fun and I got to witness beautiful views without the stress of driving myself.

I paid 300,000 IDR (~$20 USD) per day. To do this, just ask your hotel or hostel if they offer the service, if not they most likely will know someone to call.

Renting a private car with a driver

If you’re not traveling alone, renting a private car with a driver is a really good option because it’s safer than a motorbike and you can split the price with your fellow travelers. When you arrive at the port of Nusa Penida, you can hire a driver there, just by asking one of the men. You can also book from your hotel/hostel, or online at Klook or GetYourGuide . Renting a private car with driver is around 500,000 IDR (~$35 USD) per day (2019 price) .

Places to See on Nusa Penida

On the west coast of nusa penida:, 1. kelingking beach.

Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

Photos of this unique, curved coastline is what has started to draw more and more people to Nusa Penida; it’s probably the most visited part of the island! And even if you’ve already seen a thousand photos online, it’s unreal to personally stand in front of the T-Rex shaped cliff, and watch the blue waves roll into the rock face.

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) and entrance fee 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) (Unless you’re driving yourself on a motorbike, you usually won’t have to pay this).

Arrive early morning if you want to miss the crowd.

2. Angel's Billabong

Angels Billabong Bali Nusa Penida

Most people describe Angel’s billabong as a natural infinity pool because when it’s low tide, it sits above the ocean water and you’re able to swim there. If you’re like me and didn’t know this, you might end up there at high tide! You won’t be able to swim, but you will see how clear the water is and you’ll witness some massive waves coming in and hitting the rock face!

Cost | Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

Tip | if you want to swim here, you need to come at low tide. ask the locals when this is, 3. broken beach.

nusa penida self tour

Walking distance from Angel’s Billabong is Broken Beach. This cove is surrounded by cliffs that eventually form a natural bridge. Although you are not able to go down to the beach, the overlook is still a sweet spot. Watching the waves roll in through the opening in the wall was mesmerizing.

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

To really get the full experience, make sure and walk around the cove and over the natural bridge!

4. Manta Bay Viewpoint

Manta Bay Viewpoint Nusa Penida Bali

Manta Bay is just on the other side of Broken Beach. Sometimes, you are able to look down and see the magnificent manta ray swimming below. When I visited, I wasn’t able to see any because there were so many waves, but because it’s so close to Broken Beach, its worth it to check and see!

Parking 5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) – you only pay once for Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, and Manta Bay Viewpoint

Go at low tide to have a better chance of spotting a manta ray!

On the East Side of Nusa Penida:

5. pura goa giri putri cave.

nusa penida self tour

On my way to the East Coast of Nusa Penida, I stopped at Pura Goa Putri Cave which is a Hindu Temple inside a cave! In order to enter, you have to crawl through a small opening. Once inside the ceiling opens up and you follow a pathway leading to multiple prayers sights and then come out the back of the cave. It’s really so interesting!

20,000 IDR (~$1.50 USD)

Bring a sarong if you can, as you have to cover your knees to enter a Hindu temple. However, if you don’t have one, they do offer some at the temple for you to borrow.

6. Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida Bali

Diamond beach, like Kelingking beach, has started to really blow up on social media. And for good reason! This beach is paradise, but (when I visited) without the crowds.

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) for parking and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) entrance – this covers Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

When going down to the beach, be careful on the stairs as they become more narrow.

7. Atuh Beach

nusa penida self tour

Atuh Beach is the most “commercial” of the beaches meaning it has plenty of lounge chairs and local food vendors or warungs. I ate a delicious lunch here with an incredible view of crystal clear water. Also, if you buy food or drink, they offer you a chair for free to lounge in later!

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) for parking and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) entrance – this covers Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

Many people who look up photos of Atuh Beach see photos of Sebele beach, which has been mistakenly called Atuh Beach. Sebele beach is actually on the other side; I did not know this when I visited; I definitely need to go back to see that beach too!

8. Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) Viewpoint

Thousand Island Viewpoint Nusa Penida Bali

This viewpoint was probably my favorite! There was no one there except for a few people passing through, so I got to sit and enjoy the view for awhile without any disturbance. And that’s really what you need to take in this view, because it’s absolutely magnificent!

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) to park and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) for entrance – this covers Thousand Island Viewpoint and Rumah Pohon Treehouse

This place is interchangeably called Thousand Island Viewpoint or Pulau Seribu; it’s the same place!

9. Rumah Pohon Treehouse

nusa penida self tour

The Rumah Pohon Treehouse is another instagram phenomena. Just next to the Thousand Island Viewpoint, the treehouse offers another perspective of the cliff and is a picture perfect scene.

*I was definitely under the impression the treehouse was just a cute place for pictures, etc. however you can actually book to stay there! Keep in mind, it is very simple accommodation, just a mattress from what I’ve heard, so you’re really just paying for the view.

5,000 IDR (~$0.40 USD) to park and 10,000 IDR (~$0.80 USD) for entrance – this covers Thousand Island Viewpoint and Rumah Pohon Treehouse

Keep going past the treehouse, up the hill for another lookout!

Other Places to See on Nusa Penida

These places are a little more off the beaten path, and I never got to chance to visit myself. Next time!

Nusa Penida Island In Bali: Travel Guide & How To Visit

The beautiful, exotic Nusa Penida island lies just 25 kilometers from Bali, the most famous tourist destination in Indonesia.

Nusa Penida is a much smaller island than Bali, but it has some of the most amazing scenery in the entire Bali province (which it’s part of).

We’ve visited Penida more than a dozen times over the years, but it never gets old. This island is definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Indonesia .

The island can be visited on a day trip from Bali (same day return), but I think it’s better to stay and spend at least a few days sightseeing. There are so many good photo spots, hikes, and other things to do in Nusa Penida!

This travel blog will explain what to do in Nusa Penida, how to get there, where to stay, best transport options and tour packages, and some of the top sights to see. I’ve also included a handy Nusa Penida island map for trip planning!

Where Is Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a small island located southeast of Bali, Indonesia. The distance from Bali is about 25 kilometers (15 miles).

Penida has two small neighboring islands sitting right next to it called Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, and together these are known as the Nusa islands, but Nusa Penida has become the most famous of the three because of its scenic cliff views and stunning beaches.

How To Get To Nusa Penida

From Bali, the only way to reach Nusa Penida is by speedboat or ferry, with the speedboat journey taking about 45 minutes or so. There’s no airport in Nusa Penida, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Bali (DPS). You can shop for flights to Bali at Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of speedboat companies in Bali making the trip to Penida daily, and they all depart from Sanur Beach at various times. If you’re staying in Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, or elsewhere in south Bali, you can also drive over to Sanur and catch a boat. Some boat companies include a shuttle service from these areas in their total price.

I wrote a complete guide on how to get to Nusa Penida with one of these speedboat companies if you want to go there independently and arrange everything yourself. It’s more economical than booking a tour package, but also a bit more complicated.

The other option is booking a day tour to Nusa Penida with a Bali-based tour company. This can be a good option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Visiting Nusa Penida Island – Tourist Fee

Since 2023, there’s now an entrance fee for tourists arriving by boat at Nusa Penida, and it’s intended to pay for better infrastructure on the island.

You’ll pay this in cash when you first get off the boat in Penida, and the fee is 25k Rupiah for adults and 15k for children. It gives you entry to all three of the Nusa islands: Penida, Lembongan, and Ceningan.

This ticket also gives you entrance to all of the main attractions and beaches on Nusa Penida, so you don’t have to pay a second fee at Kelingking Beach anymore, for example.

Overall, it’s a positive change, because in the past you had to whip out your wallet and pay a small entrance fee at every tourist spot in Nusa Penida. That was a bit tiresome. Nowadays, you pay once at the harbor and you’re done.

Transport: How To Get Around On Nusa Penida

Even though Nusa Penida is a much smaller island than Bali (with about 4 percent of Bali’s land mass), it’s still not exactly tiny. You can expect to spend hours driving around if you want to see the best sights on each corner of the island.

Just like in Bali, you have two main transport options for exploring Nusa Penida: motorbike rental (self drive), or hire a car and private driver.

Many of the roads in Nusa Penida are still very rough and narrow, so I don’t think motorbikes are a good idea here, although lots of people seem to do it with no issues. Remember to wear a helmet, honk your horn before hills and blind turns, and be prepared to pull over to the side to let cars pass. There’s not a lot of room on the road.

When I visit Nusa Penida I’ve always rented a car with driver (you can book here ) because it’s safer and more comfortable, and the prices are only a bit higher than what you’d pay in Bali for a full day of driving.

Scooters are also easy to rent from your accommodation (or other places) in Penida, and you can expect to pay about 75k Rupiah (~$5 USD) per day with a full tank of gas.

For short taxi trips (like hotel transfers to/from the dock) you can usually arrange those on the spot or with your hotel, although they’re not very cost effective.

Unfortunately the Grab and Go-Jek ride hailing apps are not yet available in Nusa Penida (only Bali), but maybe that will change eventually.

What To Do In Nusa Penida

• kelingking beach.

The Kelingking Cliff is the most famous view in Nusa Penida, and probably one of the most iconic views anywhere in Bali.

This is an incredible ‘T-Rex’ shaped rock sticking out over the ocean, with perfect turquoise water splashing around it. The first time you look over the edge of the cliff and see this view, it really is breathtaking!

After you’re done admiring the scenery at the Kelingking Cliff, there’s also a path to go down to the beach at the bottom.

The hike down to the beach is a major workout, a bit scary, and takes at least two hours roundtrip, but you’re rewarded with one of the best white sand beaches in Nusa Penida Bali.

• Paluang Cliff Viewpoint

Everyone goes to Kelingking Cliff, but there’s another spot located very close to it with its own amazing scenery, called Paluang Cliff. It’s just a 5 minute drive from Kelingking.

Paluang may not be as well known as Kelingking, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s a great alternative spot that gives you views of the Kelingking T-rex from the other side, without the crowds.

There are swings and photo platforms at the Paluang Cliff, plus a Balinese temple with a quirky car shrine, called the ‘car temple’ of Nusa Penida.

• Broken Beach

For most visitors to Nusa Penida island, one of the first stops will be Broken Beach. This is a cool circular cove formed in the rocks, complete with a leftover arch.

This area is also one of the popular hangout spots for the manta rays, so you’ll most likely get to see some rays floating around in the sea nearby.

The bottom is filled with turquoise water from the waves coming in, and there’s even a small white sand beach. You can’t actually go down to the beach, just admire from above, but what a cool view it is!

There’s a few old local legends associated with this place that say it was created either by a giant’s footsteps or by an angry sorcerer.

It’s definitely a very unique kind of formation that I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else in the world.

• Crystal Bay

One of the popular spots on the west side of Penida is Crystal Bay. This is a good hangout or suntanning spot, and it has plenty of food and drink shacks for refreshments. Snorkeling gear can be rented here, or you can just sit around and chill out while eating some chicken satay.

The great thing about Crystal Bay is that it’s one of the best spots to catch the sunset in Penida. Last July, I went back here with a buddy and we sipped Bintangs with our toes in the sand while the sunset came down over the rocks on the coast.

• Banah Cliff Point

The great thing about Banah Cliff Point is that it actually has half a dozen different view points along the cliffs, and at each view point you can walk right up to the edge of the cliff and look down at the waves crashing on the rocks.

From these cliffs you can usually see a bunch of tiny manta rays and speedboats floating around on the ocean below. You can also see the Banah rock, a doughnut shaped rock sticking out of the ocean. Great stuff!

• Tembeling Cave & Beach

The Tembeling beach and forest is a hidden spot tucked away in the cliffs on Nusa Penida’s west coast, with a natural pool and small waterfall to enjoy.

My favorite feature of this beach is the awesome sea cave that opens up to a view of the huge cliffs on the coast, but this place is also becoming popular for the Tembeling natural pool, which you can take a dip in and relax.

The access to this beach is a bit tricky, but it’s one of our favorite spots in Bali!

• Atuh Beach

This is one of the nicest beaches on the south end of Penida island. Unlike Suwehan Beach, Atuh is not a secret and there are sunbeds, beanbags, and a couple of nice food and drink shacks here.

The highlight of Atuh Beach is probably the big elephant shaped rock in the ocean (locals say it looks like a stiletto), and the big variety of sea life that can be seen trapped in the rocks at low tide.

• Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

Have you ever wanted to sleep in a wooden tree house and wake up to the sounds of the ocean? Here’s where you can do it. The room and bed are very basic, but the views and location are out of this world.

You’ll fall asleep to the sound of geckos chirping in the trees, and wake up to an incredible sunrise over the Raja Lima islands, with dolphins and manta rays swimming and jumping in the distance.

• Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, named after the pointy diamond shaped rock on the beach, is another utterly incredible “cliff beach” on the southeastern coast of Nusa Penida island.

It’s accessible since late 2018, when a path down to the beach was carved into the side of the cliffs. I’ve even seen some wildlife occasionally, from monitor lizards to dolphins and manta rays.

This place is also becoming popular thanks to the scenic swing, where you can take pictures while swinging between two palm trees over the beach.

• Teletubbies Hill

The center of Penida island has these big round hills named after the background scenery from the Teletubbies kids show.

They look kind of like the Chocolate Hills in Bohol Philippines , and using a drone here gives you some unique perspectives.

If you come here during or just after the rainy season (roughly December to April), then the hills are a perfect green color.

Between April and May, the hills are a more yellow color, but still neat to see. During the summer however, the hills will turn dry and brown, so they won’t look as nice.

• Suwehan Beach

Looking for a hidden beach with perfect white sand and turquoise waves? Suwehan is one of the best hidden beaches in Penida.

The hike down to the beach takes about 30 minutes and it’s exhausting, but very worthwhile. This is one of my favorite places in Penida. There’s even a cool pointy rock that looks like a Christmas tree.

This beach is a hidden gem that still isn’t included in most Nusa Penida island tour packages, but you can get there with a scooter or car charter. Careful, because the road is quite rough.

• Suwehan Tree House

In 2018, the locals built some tree houses at the top of Suwehan cliff. There’s four of these tree houses now, and you can stay the night in them!

Don’t expect luxury, but there’s an outside shower/bathroom and a small food shack for ordering meals, and the beds look comfy.

The best part is that you have a stunning view of the ocean and cliffs, and it’s just a short distance from Suwehan Beach!

This is a Hindu temple inside of a big limestone cave, located on the east side of Penida. To reach it, you have to climb more than one hundred steps to the top of the hill.

After crawling through a tiny hole in the side of the mountain, the inside opens up to a huge cave about 300 meters long, with high rock ceilings!

Hindu ceremonies are still performed here, but it’s also open to tourists. Exploring this cave is an interesting experience, for sure.

• Nyanyad Beach

This is a mostly unknown beach on the south end of Nusa Penida, with a small temple and giant hills on both sides of the beach.

The road to Nyanyad Beach is a bit tricky to find, but well worth the effort. Google Maps will try to steer you onto a wrong road that leads to a lighthouse.

Once you reach the parking area for Nyanyad, the hike down to the beach only takes 15 minutes, with concrete steps all the way, and the beach has perfect white sand!

This spot is another hidden gem that isn’t included in most Nusa Penida island tour packages, although you can get there with a scooter or car charter.

• Peguyangan Waterfall

If you want to try a sketchy, remote Nusa Penida hike with steep paths to get your adrenaline going, this one is for you.

Peguyangan is a small waterfall and natural swimming pool at the bottom of some cliffs on Nusa Penida island, and you reach it by climbing down hundreds of steps on a bright blue stairway.

It’s not for the faint of heart, but the ocean and cliff views here are incredible, which is why I’d rate it as one of the best hikes in Nusa Penida.

There’s even a neat little ultra scenic hotel at the top of the cliffs called Waterfall Inn , with stunning views of the whole area.

Best Nusa Penida Photo Spot

It’s hard to pick the best Nusa Penida photo spot, but I’d say it’s probably a toss-up between Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach . Both are amazing.

Two other great photo spots in Nusa Penida would have to be Suwehan Beach and the Nusa Penida treehouse . These are stunning, and Suwehan is still pretty underrated.

Nusa Penida Hike List

Probably the most epic Nusa Penida hike is the famous Kelingking Cliff , where you can climb down a steep stairway to reach a pristine white sand beach at the bottom.

Another good Nusa Penida hike is Tembeling Beach And Forest , which has a nice mix of jungle and beach scenery, plus a sea cave and natural swimming pool.

If you really want an off-the-radar Nusa Penida hike, check out Batu Siha Beach . This is a new one I explored in 2019, and it’s still untouched except for locals. The path is intense and exhausting, but there’s a white sand beach at the bottom.

The hiking trails in Nusa Penida tend to be very short and intense, because you’re usually climbing down steep cliffs to reach a secluded beach, temple, or waterfall at the bottom.

Unlike Bali, Penida island doesn’t have any mountains or volcanoes to hike. This also means waterfalls are scarce on the island, although there are a couple interesting ones like Peguyangan Waterfall .

Best Sunset Spot In Nusa Penida

There are lots of great sunset spots in Nusa Penida.

The island has a long west-facing coastline, and pretty much anywhere on the west side is good for watching the sunset.

Two favorites are Crystal Bay , which has a relaxing beach, and Amok Sunset , which is a nice restaurant with views over Nusa Ceningan. The views at Kelingking Beach or Paluang Cliff can also be pretty nice.

Sunset time in Nusa Penida Bali can be anywhere from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM, depending on the day and month. You can check that here .

For a good sunrise spot, check out the Nusa Penida treehouse , on the southeast side of the island.

Water Sports In Nusa Penida

The main water sports in Nusa Penida are snorkeling and scuba diving, and these are exceptional! The section below talks about these activities in a bit more detail.

Unlike Bali, Nusa Penida is not really known for good surfing or waves. However, two other good water sports in Nusa Penida are jet skiing and boat charters.

A boat charter can be great for snorkeling, fishing, or just relaxing while sightseeing around the coast of the island. You can book this with Pulau Private Charters , and they have cruise options to fit every need.

I’ve been itching to try a jet ski tour around Nusa Penida, because it looks like an amazing way to see the epic coastline from a new perspective. The only company currently offering this is Jet Ski Safari Bali Wibisana , and it’s not cheap!

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling In Nusa Penida

The coral reefs around Nusa Penida island are fantastic for diving and snorkeling, and you can even swim with manta rays, ocean sunfish (‘mola mola’), and all kinds of other colorful fish.

In fact, Nusa Penida is one of the best places in the world to swim with manta rays and giant mola mola fish. The latter can only be seen by scuba diving, but manta rays are easy to see while snorkeling near the surface. Take a look at Underwater Photography Guide’s handy writeup for scuba diving in Nusa Penida and Lembongan , including seasonal tips and the best diving spots.

For snorkeling, some of the best spots in Nusa Penida include Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, and Toyapakeh Wall. It’s possible to visit all of these spots in a day trip. There’s also an underwater Buddha statue , but sadly they don’t seem to be allowing access anymore.

Nusa Penida snorkeling tours can be arranged on the spot at Toyapakeh boat harbor, or it’s also possible to book them online as day tours departing from Bali, complete with hotel pickup and speed boat transfer.

What To Bring

If you’re putting together a Nusa Penida packing list, here are a few ideas of good things to bring.

Most of the items below can probably be found on Nusa Penida island in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

  • Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Snorkeling Gear: Many of the areas around Nusa Penida have nice corals and fish, and you won’t want to miss out on them. Snorkels and masks can be rented on the boat too, but if you plan to do multiple tours it’s more economical to bring your own gear.
  • Water Shoes: Save your feet some grief and wear water shoes! We got some cuts while walking to shore from the boats.

Nusa Penida Restaurants

The flurry of tourism is bringing lots of new restaurants and cafes to Nusa Penida, so now it has a bunch of great options!

Here are just a few of our restaurant recommendations:

  • Penida Colada : This was one of the first great restaurants on the island, with a big menu, beach vibes, good food and good presentation. Plus the name is cool!
  • Secret Penida Cafe : Another nice beachfront cafe in north Nusa Penida with Western and Indonesian food.
  • Penida Espresso : Best smoothie bowls on the island, and they’re very reasonably priced. Nice for a hot day.
  • Sweet Spot : One of the first indoor cafes on the island with air-conditioning! Great breakfast here.
  • The Chill : Ocean view pool with no minimum spend! Nice atmosphere with a wade-up bar and swings.
  • Amok Sunset : Fancy cliffside restaurant and bar with a pool, and great sunset views over Nusa Ceningan.
  • Warung Nengah Mesin : Mother’s cooking. Simply delicious. This is a local warung in the south part of the island, so it’s easy to reach from many of the major sights.

Nusa Penida Massage & Spa

Nusa Penida doesn’t have a lot of massage places compared to Bali, but I’m sure that’ll change over time as more tourists arrive. A foot massage is the perfect way to unwind after a full day of hiking or touring.

One of the best massage places in Nusa Penida would have to be Tejas Spa Warnakali , which has ocean views and is part of the Adiwana Warnakali Resort . You don’t need to be a guest at the resort to get a massage there, it’s open to the public.

For budget spa and massage places in Nusa Penida, you can check out Little Papaya , Juara Spa , and Dhipalia Massage . However, we haven’t tried these ones yet, so I can’t vouch for the quality.

Other Nusa Penida Tips

  • Credit Cards: Almost all restaurants, hotels, and other charges in Penida are cash only. Best thing to do is bring plenty of cash with you from Bali. I also like to book my bigger purchases online (like hotels and drivers), that way I can pay for them with credit card and save my precious cash for those little roadside warungs and fresh coconuts!
  • ATM: Penida still has very few ATM options. The most reliable seems to be the Bank BRI booth at Sampalan , but it only lets you pull 1 million Rupiah per try.
  • Cell Service: Phone reception is strong with Telkomsel in most of the main areas of Penida, although you may lose service in some places while driving around because of the hilly terrain of the island.
  • WiFi: The WiFi situation in Penida used to be very poor compared to Bali, but it has improved dramatically in the last few years, so most hotels already have good WiFi that can be used for browsing, streaming videos, and sending emails.
  • Convenience Stores: There are lots of small mini marts, especially around the north shore, where you can buy cheap snacks, drinks, toiletries, sunscreen, and other such things. Sari Yoga Mart and Bagus Mart are two good options. However, their selection is much smaller than what you’ll find shopping in Bali.
  • Language: The locals in Nusa Penida speak Balinese with a distinct dialect, and although many of them also understand Indonesian, they’re not schooled in English (unlike in Bali). This means most Nusa Penidans only know a little bit of English that they’ve been able to pick up from tourists, so be patient and come prepared to explain things by pointing or showing pictures.
  • Mosquitoes: There is some dengue fever present in Nusa Penida, but it seems to be less common than in Bali, which is probably because of the drier climate in Penida. You won’t need bug spray for visiting the beaches or really any of the popular tourist sites, but we have seen mosquitoes at the Tembeling forest and Goa Giri Putri, as well as near some of the hotels in Nusa Penida. Thankfully there is no malaria in either Penida or Bali, so you don’t need to worry about anti-malarial medications or anything like that. The entire Bali province is certified malaria free according to this Lancet study from 2018.

Is Nusa Penida Safe?

Yes, Nusa Penida is very safe!

We live in Bali off and on. Violent crime is unheard of in Penida, and petty crime is also rare. Just take normal precautions. This is a tight knit community and the locals are very kind and hospitable.

Balinese are religious people, so please don’t disrespect the temples or local culture. And do be careful if you hike any of the steep cliffs like Kelingking Beach!

Nusa Penida Wildlife

Just like Bali, the island of Nusa Penida is full of wonderful wildlife, and if you’re lucky you might see some during your visit.

Animals living in Penida include bats, spiders, monitor lizards, and monkeys (Balinese macaques). You can see the monkeys at Kelingking Cliff and other places on the island. At the Goa Giri Putri cave , there are even two species of endangered purplish-orange crabs that live nowhere else on Earth except Nusa Penida island.

Nusa Penida is a bird sanctuary with many endangered bird species, including the very nice Bali starlings. Not many of these are left in the wild, so sightings are rare, but it’s hoped their numbers will improve.

Snakes in Nusa Penida include pythons, vipers, spitting cobras, and sea snakes. The only one I’ve seen here personally is the island pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis).

In the main tourist spots of Nusa Penida, you aren’t likely to ever see a snake. If you do, treat it with extreme caution! Venomous snakes in Bali can be very dangerous and there’s no anti-venom available in Penida.

One time I almost stepped on a very venomous island pit viper while hiking in Nusa Penida. My foot landed within inches of the snake, which was coiled up in the center of the path, but thankfully its head was turned away from me and it didn’t see how close my foot landed.

The triangular head and bright red tail on its green body was a giveaway. This was in a less traveled part of the island with lots of foliage. It wasn’t in a tourist area.

If you go snorkeling or scuba diving at Nusa Penida, you can get up close with the gentle manta rays and gigantic ocean sunfish (‘mola mola’), and all kinds of other colorful fish and coral. We’ve also seen sea turtles and dolphins in the waters around Penida.

Best Time To Visit

Nusa Penida has a drier and more sunny climate than mainland Bali, so any month is great for visiting.

The best time to visit Nusa Penida island really just depends on what you’re looking for.

Bali’s rainy season runs from November to April. It’s less crowded during this time, and the rain is mostly at night, but the weather during the day can be hot and humid at 90-95 F (32-35 C).

From May to August, the temps are a lot cooler, and it’s more breezy and sunny. This is the high season so it’s a little more crowded.

Penida is spectacular at any time of the year, but I think the best months for photography are March to May (right after the rainy season ends), as this is when the island is covered with green foliage.

However, if you’re just looking for the nicest weather, May to August are the most comfortable months of the year.

Is Nusa Penida Worth It?

If you’ve kept reading this far and you still aren’t sure whether you should visit Pineda, then the answer is YES, Nusa Penida is definitely worth it!

This island has some of the best natural scenery anywhere in the Bali province, and some of the best views anywhere in Indonesia for that matter. It has great photo spots, cliffs, caves, beaches, hikes, water sports, and more.

There are even lots of nice hotels and restaurants popping up, and it’s becoming easier to get around the island. Overall, it’s well worth crossing the short distance from Bali to Nusa Penida in order to see all of the things this island has to offer.

How Long To Stay

Don’t be a day tripper. There are so many good things to do in Nusa Penida island. You need to spend at least 2 days to see the best highlights, even if you don’t do any snorkeling.

I would try to spend 3 or 4 days in the Nusa islands if possible, but you could easily fill a week, especially if you plan to do snorkeling or scuba diving.

Nusa Penida Itinerary

Here’s what a sample 4-day itinerary for Nusa Penida could look like:

  • Day 1: West Nusa Penida . Visit Kelingking Beach , Paluang Cliff , Pererenan Cliff , Banah Cliff Point , and Tembeling Beach .
  • Day 2: East Nusa Penida . Visit Diamond Beach , Atuh Beach , Rumah Pohon Treehouse , Teletubbies Hill , and Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple .

Nusa lembongan & ceningan.

While you’re busy exploring Nusa Penida island, don’t forget there are also two other nice islands located next to it — Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, respectively.

The islands of Lembongan and Ceningan are connected to each other by a colorful yellow bridge, and even though they don’t have the epic cliffs and dramatic scenery of Penida, they’re still worth a visit for their nice hotels , seaside cafes, and laidback atmosphere.

It’s easy to go between the Nusa islands with a short and cheap boat ride. Some people even base themselves in Lembongan while touring Penida.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at Saren Villa on the north coast of Nusa Penida , and paid 240k Rupiah ($15 USD) for a private double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.

This is one of the cheapest options in Penida, and it's in a great location near the best restaurants! We were happy.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.

This is so useful, thank you! We are going 28/29th Dec and wanted to do a private tour whilst we are there, do you have any suggestions? All I can find is day tours from Bali to Nusa Penida but we will already be there. Thank you in advance!

Hi! In that case, you could just book a private driver since you’ll already be on the island. They can take you to some of the best places on the island, or you can suggest places that you’d like to visit. Enjoy!

Nusa Penida Day Trip: What to See in One Day

' src=

Nusa Penida is the largest island of the Nusa Islands just off the east coast of Bali, Indonesia. The island is popular with tourists due to the island’s pristine beaches, magnificent viewpoints , a coastline that resembles the head of a tyrannosaurus rex and gorgeous dive sites .

I’ve been to Bali many times and each time I stay in Canggu to get pampered and eat at the best cafes . But this time around, I left Canggu! * Gasp * And I ventured out to see something different. So glad I did because Nusa Penida is everything I wanted and more!

And there are so many things to see on Nusa Penida that you may want to stay at least two days on the Island. But if you can only spare one day from your itinerary, you can still see some of the best highlights on Nusa Penida in one day.

So if you like unspoiled beaches and rustic island vibes, then keep reading and find out how you can spend a day on Nusa Penida.

What you need to know before taking a day trip to Nusa Penida

Before spending the day on Nusa Penida, look at my post on  everything you need to know before going to Bali . I included a lot of information, including how to get around Bali, how to get a prepaid SIM card and other essential Bali travel tips.

Here are a few additional tips for going on a day tour to Nusa Penida:

  • You can visit Nusa Penida for the day from Nusa Lembongan or Bali.
  • Doing a self-exploration tour of Nusa Penida is possible. But you should be at least an intermediate rider when riding a scooter. The roads on Nusa Penida are super rough and bumpy!
  • Bring enough cash for scooter rental and food for the day .
  • Bring enough water , especially if you are going during warmer months.

Nusa Penida 1 day trip: What to bring

Exploring Nusa Penida as a day trip is super fun! For a guaranteed good time, make sure you bring the following:

  • a small backpack for all your belongings
  • a pair of versatile shoes that is ideal for walking over sharp limestone into the rock pool and riding a scooter
  • quick dry clothing  because you will be in and out of the water all day
  • bathing suit because there are many gorgeous beaches around the island
  • a small towel to dry off or to sit at the beach
  • enough cash for the day since most places will only take cash
  • plenty of water for the long scooter rides around the island
  • lots of sunscreen to block all the UV rays while you are scootering around
  • hat and sunglasses to further block any sun rays

How to get to Nusa Penida

1. small boat from nusa lembongan to nusa penida.

Catch a small boat to Nusa Penida from the north end of the Yellow Bridge on Nusa Lembongan . You will see many signs for the boat going to the biggest Nusa island. Park your scooter as indicated.

A return trip to Nusa Penida costs 120K IDR per person . There isn’t an exact schedule for the boat, but they will start the journey once the boat is full. The trip to Nusa Penida takes about 20 minutes .

The boat will drop all passengers at the pier at Toya Pakeh Beach , which is on the northwestern coast of Nusa Penida.

A small boat from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida

2. High-speed boat from Bali to Nusa Penida

Many companies offer fast boat services from Bali to Nusa Penida .

All the fast boat companies are along the beach in Sanur at the end of Jalan Hang Tuah . Each company will have several boats going to Nusa Penida as early as 7:30 am and returning as late as 5:00 pm . And the price may include pick-up and drop-off at specific locations in Bali.

Check schedules and prices with Penida Express . Prices start from 196K IDR per person .

How to get around Nusa Penida

There are three options to get around Nusa Penida . Either rent a scooter and get around the island yourself, hire a car and driver to take you around the island or join a tour. I’ll explain the pros and cons of each option.

A self-guided tour on a scooter gives the most flexibility in touring Nusa Penida in one day

1. Rent a scooter for a self-guided tour of Nusa Penida

Once you arrive in Nusa Penida, plenty of people will approach you and offer you deals on renting a scooter. A scooter rental costs 80K IDR or so. You get a moped, helmet and a full tank of petrol.

The advantage of a self-guided scooter ride is you are on your own schedule . So you can do whatever you like at your own pace.

However, if you are unfamiliar with driving a scooter, you may not want to try it in Nusa Penida . Part of the road to Kelingking Beach is quite rough – it is quite bumpy for at least 20 minutes, and it feels like the entire road is full of speed bumps.

So, before renting a scooter, be aware that the roads are not for inexperienced drivers. Ask yourself: is riding a scooter the best option to explore Nusa Penida ? And if not, there are other options as well.

2. Hire a car and driver for a self-guided tour of Nusa Penida

An alternative option is to hire a car and driver to take you around the island .

The advantage of this option is that you leave all the navigating and driving to someone else . And you get to sit in an air-conditioned car between visiting different attractions.

However, it will cost you at least 250K IDR per person and another 250K IDR for hiring a driver . It is a comfortable option but not the cheapest option. Getting a few other travellers to rent a private car might be worthwhile.

3. Join a Nusa Penida Day Tour

Another option is to join a one-day Nusa Penida tour . Many tours go to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan or Bali.

You can find many tour operators in Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan or online. The fee starts from 300K IDR per person .

Also, there are numerous Nusa Penida day tours from Bali as well. They offer Nusa Penida one-day tours and multiple-day tours if you want to spend more time in Nusa Penida.

One-day Itinerary for self-tour of Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a relatively big island but the toughest part about getting around the island is the road condition . Many parts of the road are not paved and super bumpy. Which means it would require more travel time between attractions.

It is possible to see most the highlights of Nusa Penida in one day. However, it is quite fast, and you will have to start early.

Below is a suggested one-day itinerary for Nusa Penida if you are touring the island on your own scooter.

  • Arrive in Nusa Penida around 8:00 am .
  • Rent a scooter at the pier, and off you go!
  • First, visit  Crystal Bay Beach to see the clear crystal water and enjoy a refreshing coconut at the beach.
  • Drive about 55 minutes to  Broken Beach . The distances between the two beaches look close, but there is only one road that will take you from one beach to another. Make sure to visit Angel Billabong while you are there.
  • Next, drive about 30 minutes to Kelingking Beach to see the famous tyrannosaurus rex coastline. If you only take photos from the top of the cliff, it should take no more than 30 minutes or so. But if you want to descend to the beach below, you will need more time, especially for the climb coming back up. It is quite a trek to go back up!
  • Go back to the pier! Make sure you leave yourself sufficient time to get back to the pier.
  • Catch the last fast boat back to Nusa Lembongan or Bali.

Nusa Penida one day trip: things to do in Nusa Penida

Whichever mode of transportation you choose will be great because there are many things to do in Nusa Penida. I included all the attractions on the map.

The famous Yellow Bridge linking Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. And it is the spot where you can take a boat to Nusa Penida

1. Crystal Bay Beach

A white sandy beach with crystal clear water where you can swim and dive . The beach definitely earned the name because the water is crystal clear!

And it is one of the best spots to snorkel in Nusa Penida . Not far from the beach, you snorkel in crystal water and find fish swimming in the shallow water.

Or if you want to relax at the beach , choose one of the beach lounge beds on the beach.

Don’t worry about finding food. There are several vendors selling food and beverages like fresh coconut.

nusa penida self tour

2. Broken Beach

Another famous hot spot on Nusa Penida is Broken Beach . At the southeastern tip of the island , the area used to be a large cave but part of the area collapsed . From an aerial view, it looks like a giant crater with rocks and water inside . You can walk around by following the path.

If you have seen Broken Beach on Instagram, the famous shot is the area where a strip of land resembles an arched bridge.

3. Angel’s Billabong

Close to Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong is a quiet blue rock pool with big waves crashing at the cliff’s edge .

Take a look at all the different hues of blues and greens within the rock pool once the waves have settled. You can cool off from the sun by dipping into the rock pool . But be careful of the sharp limestone!

4. Kelingking Beach

Anyone who goes to Nusa Penida would want to see the tyrannosaurus rex! The outline of the coast looks like the head of a t-rex . And it is probably one of the best Instagram spots in Bali !

Most people hover over the coast to take photos of the dinosaur’s head from various viewpoints .

And for those who want to get up-close and personal, you can descend the hundreds of steps down the back of t-rex and descend to Kelingking Beach . The view of the coast is marvellous no matter where you are at.

Tyrannosaurus rex at Kelingking Beach

If you are spending more than one day in Nusa Penida

The one-day Nusa Penida itinerary only covers the highlights of the western part of the island. There is so much more to see on Nusa Penida, so I highly recommend staying overnight on the island.

Here are some of the best attractions on Nusa Penida if you have another day:

  • Tembeling Beach and Forest – a serene natural pool that is excellent for swimming while the beach is further away from the coast.
  • Teletubbies Hill – the green rolling hills got its name from the children’s show because it resembles the round green hills in its background. It is a different scenery than all the well-known ones around Nusa Penida. And it is especially magnificent when viewed with a drone.
  • Rumah Pohon “Tree House” – the famous Instagram Nusa Penida treehouse, Rumah Pohon is located at Thousand Island viewpoint on the east side of the island.
  • Diamond Beach – once you park your scooter in the designated parking lot, walk towards the coast and descend the steep staircase along the huge rock wall. You can see beautiful coastal cliffs and water from the stairs, and the view is spectacular. The beach is more swimmable than the nearby Atuh Beach.
  • Atuh Beach – hike down the steep path to a gorgeous white sandy beach in a small cove with beautiful turquoise water surrounded by erratic limestone rock formations. Visit during high tide to see the turquoise water or low tide to see a completely different beach.
  • Swim with Manta Rays – join a tour from Bali to swim with Manta Rays .

Where to stay in Nusa Penida

If you spend only one day in Nusa Penida, you can only see one part of the island because the road terrain is so rough that it is hard to get around the entire island in one day.

So it is highly recommended to stay at least one night in Nusa Penida to explore other attractions.

There are many types of accommodations (hostels, hotels, villas), including one of the best places for glamping in Bali .

Here are some of my top picks:

  • Check prices & reviews: Airbnb
  • Check prices & reviews: Agoda

Ah, just the post I needed! I have dived all around Penida, and I have even been to two of the other Nusa islands, but never made it to the actual Penida island! Thanks for the tips, I will be referring to these when I head over soon 🙂

' src=

Well technically you’ve been to Nusa Penida especially if you did all the diving around the island! How amazing! I hope you have blog posts about that! 🙂

' src=

I wish I’d had this post before I went to Bali last year! Then again I didn’t actually make it to Nusa Penida – so hopefully I’ll go back again and use this 🙂

You have to go back to Bali! I know I already want to go back! 🙂

' src=

This is beautiful! I’ve always wanted to visit indonesia, the islands are absolutely gorgeous! Saving this for later because it will definitely come in handy 🙂

I hope you will go someday! I already want to go back! 🙂

' src=

Great article, thanks for the info! Do you have any recommendations on who to hire for a self-guided tour with a private car and driver?

Hi Stephen! Thank you so much! I rented the scooter and did an island tour on my own. I don’t have a specific contact. But once you are on the island, people will approach you to rent scooter and car + driver. I contemplated to hire a car and driver with some of the people I met on the boat going to Nusa Penida but ended up doing the scooter thing instead. Hiring a car and driver is not the cheapest option so sharing a car might be an option as well. Hope this helps! 🙂

A Detailed Nusa Penida Itinerary | How to Spend 1,2,3 Days on the Island

One of the top places that I recommend visiting during a trip to Indonesia would have to be the beautiful island of Nusa Penida.

Located just off the southeastern coast of Bali, you will find an island full of pristine beaches, blue waters, vast viewpoints, underground temples, and plenty of windy roads.

This guide will go over how to put together the best possible Nusa Penida itinerary, whether you have 1, 2 or 3 days to visit the island.

*  Affiliate Disclosure : This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase through the links provided, at no additional cost to you. Thanks for supporting the work I put into TripTins!

1) How to Get to Nusa Penida

Since Nusa Penida is an island and has no airport, the only way to get there would be by boat.

There really are only three places that have direct ferries to Nusa Penida – 1) Bali, 2) the Gili Islands, or 3) the nearby Nusa Lembongan.

You will most likely be arriving in Nusa Penida at the Toya Pakeh Harbour or potentially at the nearby Buyuk Harbour.

To see the latest ferry schedules I would recommend heading over to a website like Baliferry, Gilitickets, Giligetaways, or Directferries .

While they include several of the ferry companies, they do not necessarily have them all on there either, so be sure to research around. Below are the approximate prices and times of the ferries to Nusa Penida:

  • From Bali (Sanur Harbor) | ~$17 – $25 USD | 1 Hour
  • From Gili Trawangan / Air | ~$45 USD | 2 Hours
  • From Nusa Lembongan | ~$10 USD | 20 minutes

» If coming from Bali, most ferry companies include hotel pick up with the cost of the ticket. This usually only applies if you are staying from southern Bali up to Ubud.

» You can also take part of a “do it yourself” day trip from Bali if you do not have the time to spend the night on Nusa Penida. Simply grab the first ferry of the day, and then head back to Bali on the last departure. Feel free to leverage any single day from the itinerary down below when putting that day trip together.

Nusa Penida Ferry

2) How to Get Around

When it comes to Nusa Penida, there are two main ways to get yourself around the island – by scooter or by private driver.

A third potential option here (and mostly for those day visitors from Bali) is to take a guided day tour of the island with everything taken care of for you – car transfer, ferry tickets, guide, etc.

» If you are comfortable enough on a scooter / motorbike, you can rent one from the harbor area or your hotel for as little as $5 – $10 USD per day . Some of the roads of Nusa Penida are in very poor condition, with tons of uneven terrain throughout.

I have heard of plenty of accidents happening on the island with those who were not experienced enough. So please do not rent a scooter if you do not have the expertise.

» If you want to play it safe, I would recommend hiring a driver for each day you are on the island, so you can be taken to any attractions that you would like to visit. Expect to pay around $40 USD for a full day driver on the island. You can either find them at the harbor area or have your hotel help set one up for you.

» Lastly, you could join a tour that will take you around the island if doing so as a Bali day trip. You can choose from a few different types of options here depending on what attractions you want to visit:

  • From Bali: Nusa Penida Small Group Tour by Speed Boat
  • Bali: Day Trip to East Nusa Penida, Atuh & Diamond Beach
  • From Bali: Swim with Manta Rays in Nusa Penida
Check out this Nusa Penida private tour option that includes a driver for the day as you pick & choose the highlight that you are most interested in visiting

3) Where to Stay

Nusa Penida is relatively new to the tourism landscape which is why many of the roads throughout the island are just not up to standard.

You also won’t find too many tourist hotspot areas like an Ubud or a Seminyak. Many of the accommodation options are just sprawled throughout.

A lot of the popular spots though are more on the western side of the island closer to the harbor area.

Below are some highly rated options based on price point in that area. What is also great about Nusa Penida is that it is budget friendly with the most expensive options not even $100 per night.

  • Luxury: Semabu Hills Hotel Nusa Penida | Daphila Cottage
  • Mid Range: Singabu Bungalows | Sawit Garden Cottages | Crystal Bay Bungalows
  • Budget: Miko Bali Bungalow | Prasi Sunset Bungalows

Sawit Garden Cottages

4) Helpful Tips & Notes

» Staying on the island overnight gives you the chance to get up early and stay late to avoid the crowds . Many of these attractions can get quite crowded during the day, so by being on your own schedule, you will have a better chance to really enjoy each place.

» As mentioned before, the roads are bumpy and can be quite dangerous . Only rent a scooter if you have the appropriate experience.

» The island can be broken into two main parts – the western and eastern side . Most day trippers will focus on the western side as it is closer to the harbor area and has some of the top attractions, while the eastern side is a bit less crowded.

» Bring cash with you from Bali. While there are ATMs on the island, they are harder to come by so plan accordingly and bring enough cash along.

» For lunch, plan on eating at a warung nearby some of the beaches or other attractions . I would not venture far off your route for the day just to go to a certain restaurant since it can take a good amount of time navigating the roads.

» For dinner, you may not find too many options around depending on where you are staying . There may just be a handful of them that are within walking distance from your hotel, and don’t expect anything too fancy there.

» Many of the attractions require entrance/parking fees, but these are usually no more than just one dollar or so . Be sure to have some small change with you throughout the day.

A Nusa Penida Itinerary

Now that you have some background on how to get to Nusa Penida, how to get around, and where to stay, let’s dive into some potential 1,2, and 3 day itinerary options for your time exploring the island.

I have written up three separate days of attractions down below, so feel free to mix and match the days based on how long you have on the island.

Day 1 will include the most popular attractions on the west coast, day 2 will focus on the east coast, and day 3 will have a little bit of everything.

Depending on the type of traveler you are and your travel pace, feel free to add or remove certain attractions along the way. If you want to spend one full day just at the beach then go for it!

I have also included the map below which shows day 1 in blue, day 2 in orange, and day 3 in purple.

5) Nusa Penida 1 Day

Whether you are staying on the island for the night or just taking the day trip from Bali, below is what a 1 day Nusa Penida itinerary can look like. Since it is only a single day, this will entail all the main and easily accessible attractions on the western side of the island.

Angel’s Billabong

Angel’s Billabong is a beautiful natural tidal pool on Nusa Penida overlooking the ocean. To enjoy the tidal pool though, you must plan your visit around low tide. As the tide gets higher, the water from the ocean starts splashing its way into the tidal pool.

This not only ruins the serene views of the pool, but it also means you will not have the chance to head into Angel’s Billabong either as it would just be too dangerous.

» Learn more in the Angel’s Billabong Guide up on the site

Angels Billabong Nusa Penida

Broken Beach

Just a few minutes’ walk from Angel’s Billabong you will find another top natural attraction on the island – Broken Beach.

While the beach is not accessible, you can enjoy some 360-degree views from up top as you circle the beach and walk above on the rock arch.

Down below you will be able to see the waves crashing through the arch alongside the scenic rock formations lining the beach.

» Learn more in the Broken Beach Guide up on the site

Broken Beach Bali

Kelingking Beach

Arguably the most popular attraction of Nusa Penida is Kelingking Beach. From the viewpoint area above, you will be able to take in one of the top views in all of Indonesia.

Out in front of you will be this massive T-Rex shaped peninsula, the crystal-clear waters, and the sandy beach itself.

Here comes the fun part though – in order to reach the beach, you will need to head down a steep and somewhat dangerous pathway that is built into the cliffside walls.

It should take around 30 minutes or so to get from the viewpoint area to the beach itself, but once you are down there, you can fully enjoy all that Kelingking has to offer.

» Learn more in the Kelingking Beach Guide up on the site

Kelingking Beach Viewpoint

Crystal Bay

If you are staying overnight on the island and are not in a rush to get back to Bali, then you should end your day with a sunset experience at Crystal Bay.

Since it is the main beach on the western side of the island, you will find that many people head there to enjoy a nice sunset.

Out in the distance you will be able to see Nusa Ceningan with the sun slowly setting behind the island.

Quick tip – you can also make the walk to the more seclusive Pandan Beach, which is located just on the southern side of Crystal Bay.

6) Nusa Penida 2 Day

If you have 2 days to spare when visiting Nusa Penida, you will be able to enjoy even more of what this beautiful island has to offer. While you can keep day 1 as is from above, day 2 will focus on the eastern side of Nusa Penida.

The below attractions can be completed in a clockwise direction as you make your way from one place to the next and enjoy much of what eastern Nusa Penida has to offer.

Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple

The first stop of the day can be the Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple.

Now this is not your normal temple. Instead, you will need to maneuver your way through a small hole built into the mountainside, and once through, you will be greeted to a massive cave temple.

There are several chambers throughout the cave with various rituals going on as you make the walk around. When it comes to authentic cultural experiences, this is one of the best you can ask for on Nusa Penida.

» Learn more in the Goa Giri Putri Cave Temple Guide up on the site

Goa Giri Putri Ceremony

After leaving the temple, continue the drive around the island, where you will soon arrive at a parking lot located directly between Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach.

From the parking lot, you will be able to visit both beaches over the course of several hours.

To get to Atuh Beach, you will need to head down a steep staircase until you reach the beach level.

Once you arrive at Atuh Beach, feel free to grab a chair in the sand, have some food/drinks from one of the warungs and take a dip in the water.

After finishing up at Atuh Beach, you will need to make that walk back up to the parking lot area, where you can then check out Diamond Beach.

» Learn more in the Atuh Beach Guide up on the site

Nusa Penida Atuh Beach

Diamond Beach

Before heading down to Diamond Beach itself, you can walk around the top area to get some nice views of the beach from above. Once you are ready, it is time to make your way on the staircase built into the cliffside wall.

The walk down offers some breathtaking views of the staircase, the massive cliff, the clear waters, and the beach itself. After reaching the bottom of the staircase, you can once again enjoy yet another beach on Nusa Penida.

After enough time down below, it is back up the staircase, and to the parking lot, where you can continue to the last stop of the day.

» Learn more in the Diamond Beach Guide up on the site

Diamond Beach Staircase

Rumah Pohon Treehouse & Thousand Islands Viewpoint

Just a few minutes’ drive towards the opposite side of Diamond Beach you will find one of my favorite viewpoints on Nusa Penida.

The spot is called the Thousand Islands Viewpoint but it is also home to the famous Rumah Pohon Treehouse. Just note if you see one of these mentioned, you are essentially visiting both of them.

From the viewpoint spot you will have the view of Diamond Beach from an alternate angle alongside several of these massive rock formations jutting out of the water down below.

You will find a few treehouses around the viewpoint area that overlook these views as well. If you are interested, you can actually reserve a night at the treehouse and wake up/go to sleep with that view.

7) Nusa Penida 3 Day

Having three days to explore Nusa Penida will give you the chance to visit all of the above and then decide what types of activities you would like to take part of on your last day on the island. Below are a few different options to choose from based on your preference.

1) Two of the other highly rated attractions that are located right in between the west and east side of the island include:

Tembeling Beach & Natural Pools

The Tembeling Beach, Natural Pools and Forest is one of the less visited attractions on the island. It offers the chance to get away from the crowds a bit, but still enjoy a very beautiful place on Nusa Penida.

There are a few different parts to Tembeling that you will get to experience during a visit. First is the drive down as you pass through the Tembeling Forest.

Once you are at the parking lot area, you will walk down the stairs and be welcomed to a large natural swimming pool.

From there you will take in views of a “secret beach” with hundreds of rock piles set up in the area, and soon after will come across a second smaller natural swimming pool.

Finally, there is Tembeling Beach itself – a small beach to relax at with some great views.

» Learn more in the Tembeling Beach Guide up on the site

Tembeling Natural Pool

Peguyangan Waterfall

Another less visited attraction on the island is the Peguyangan Waterfall. It is not just a simple waterfall though. From the parking lot area you will make your way down a steep blue colored staircase that is built alongside the cliff wall.

Once you reach the bottom of the staircase you will arrive at a temple area and a natural spring that is spouting out water to cleanse in. The water then makes its way over the side of the cliff resulting in the Peguyangan Waterfall.

2) Another option here is to head on a scuba diving or snorkeling trip off the coast of the island and have the chance to see some manta rays. This was something I didn’t have the chance to do it, but it is certainly on my bucket list for next time around.

3) Finally, if all the sightseeing on the first two days was enough for you, then why not just pick a beach on the island – it could be one of the beaches mentioned above or a less visited one, and just spend the day relaxing in the sand and enjoying the beautiful water.

» One of my recommendations here would be the less visited Suwehan Beach , located on the eastern side of the island. You can definitely combo the beach along with one or both of Tembeling and Peguyangan if you would like.

Pandan Beach Nusa Penida

That about wraps up a potential 1,2 or 3 day Nusa Penida itinerary to better help you plan your trip to the island. If you do have any questions or comments, feel free to add them in below.

Also don’t forget to check out the other Indonesia itineraries and guides up on the site like a One Week Java Itinerary , 3 Day Ubud Itinerary or 7 Day Bali itinerary .

The Best Nusa Pendia Day Trip from Seminyak Bali (2023)

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning I may receive a small commission for qualifying purchases and bookings at no extra cost to you. THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT! More info: Read Disclosure & Privacy Policy

Nusa Penida Island is a must-see on any trip to Bali. You might be wondering if it’s even possible to go to Nusa Penida for the day from Seminyak and how exactly you get there.

Well, Nusa Penida island is one of the best places to go if you want to get away from the busy streets of Seminyak and have a great, quiet journey.

Well, there are a few choices, but the best one is to go on a day trip to Nusa Penida, a beautiful island off the coast of Bali.

With its beautiful cliffs, white-sand beaches, and clear, blue waters full of sea life, Nusa Penida is a tropical paradise.

I hope this post will help you make the most of your day trip from Seminyak to Nusa Penida by taking you through the highlights of this fascinating place.

A Day Trip to Nusa Penida from Seminyak

To really fall in love with Bali, you need to get away from the unclean beaches and busy tourist areas like Kuta.

Go on an adventure on the (kind of) untouched islands in the middle and out to sea. The best way to do that is to take a day trip to Nusa Penida.

A day trip can be planned from most of Bali’s beach suburbs on the main island, like Kuta, Seminyak, and others.

Alternatively, you can book online at least one day ahead of time. You can make reservations online with a different of ferry companies.

It might not be the cheapest day trip in Bali, but it might be the most memorable.

I would recommend booking through Klook . We never had any issues, and you can trust them.

How to Get to Nusa Penida from Seminyak

Most boats leave from Sanur Harbour, which is the best place to start your trip to Nusa Penida.

Private and public boats look alike, so if you don’t have time to stay on the island for a few days like we did, I suggest you go on an epic day trip. It looks like there are two main-day trips.

Details of the two most well-known Nusa Penida tours.

BEST NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP TOURS

These are the two most well-known Nusa Penida tours. We took the Bali Nusa Penida Tour, meeting at Sanur Harbour.

Please keep in mind that this only includes the ferry ride from Sanur to Nusa Penida. You will need to rent a motorcycle or private car to get around the island on your own.

  • Nusa Penida Tour from Bali (Meet Up at Sanur Harbor). It is a popular day trip from Bali to Penida, with all the highlights.
  • From Bali: Swim with Manta Rays in Nusa Penida. The most incredible experience was swimming with giant mantas.

The first tour is called the BEST Nusa Penida Tour from Bali (Meet Up at Sanur Harbor) .

It basically goes to all the best beaches and view points on both the East Tour and the West Tour in one day.

Which includes snorkelling opportunities. This is the one we took.

A DAY TRIP TO NUSA PENIDA: THE DETAILS

As long as you get to Sanur Harbour on time, getting on the ferry is pretty quick.

We reserved our ferry tickets two days ahead of time, so we didn’t have to worry about finding the right tour on the spot.

Instead, we went straight to the tour company to get our tickets.

(This tour did not operate in the same manner as other locations where you had to present your QR code before proceeding.)

You will need to get a bracelet or ticket in person, and you will need to keep it safe until you get back to Sanur.

Otherwise, you might not be able to get on the ferry. Make sure you remember this, even if you book ahead of time.

Taking a Day Tour to Nusa Penida from Bali

Also, please remember that the Nusa Penida day trip tour we booked did not include getting to and from our hotel. Those things will need to be arranged separately. I suggest taking a Grab taxi or a scooter to get to Sanur Harbour.

The boat ride from Bali’s Sanur Harbour takes 30 minutes, so if you’re staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta, getting to Nusa Penida quickly for a day trip is easy.

We stayed in Ubud during our day trip to Nusa Penida, so we left our villa an hour early and got to the harbour by 8:45 am.

A happy woman faces Kelingking Beach with uplifted hands.

EXPLORING NUSA PENIDA: What you can expect to see on a Day Trip to Nusa Penida

We arrived early and reached Nusa Penida island by 10:15 a.m.

You’ll have to explore the island on your own using a motorcycle or a private car once you get there.

Just keep in mind where the tour company spot is, and pay close attention to the time when you need to return to board the boat to return to Sanur Harbour.

The Best and cheapest way to have a great day trip on Nusa Penida

To get a better bargain, move a little further towards the waterfront boat stalls from the tour companies’ booths.

Most importantly, you should know which side of Nusa Penida island you want to explore, the east or the west.

This will tell you how much a taxi or scooter ride will cost.

If you don’t have experience riding, I don’t suggest getting a scooter because the roads on the island are a bit bumpy.

The iconic KELINGKING Beach, Nusa Penida

Do not think you can see both sides of the island in one day; that is impossible on a day trip. If you genuinely want an entirely immersive experience, you must choose one or the other. Most importantly, bring cash because Nusa Penida doesn’t have many ATMs.

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour

  • Kelingking Beach (West side)
  • Angel’s Billabong (West side)
  • Broken Beach (west side)
  • Diamond Beach (East side)
  • Crystal Bay Beach (West side)
  • Treehouse (East side)
  • Many panoramic viewpoints (East side)
  • Teletubbies Hill (East side)

Natural attractions of Nusa Penida

Kelingking beach.

You have probably seen a lot of pictures of Kelingking Beach on Instagram, even if you don’t use it. When you visit the viewpoint above the beach, you will understand why it’s a travel blogger’s dream location on Instagram.

However, it’s also a great place to visit for those who don’t feel the need to make their friends envious of their beautiful travel photos.

It’s pretty amazing to look at, even in real life.

The path down to the beach wasn’t very safe, but most people, including my husband and me, were happy with the view from above.

I wouldn’t suggest going down unless you are a fitness expert. It’s not for everyone.

happy couple posing at Kelingking Beach

After enjoying the breathtaking views of Kelingking Beach, we had lunch at one of the eateries that are close to the cliffs that overlook the shore.

There aren’t many restaurants around, so this is an excellent place to eat if you want to see the highlights of the side you’ve selected and save time.

Naturally, Kelingking Beach is the first thing you see when you get there.

Next, we visited Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong on Nusa Penida’s western side (I can only vouch for the side we visited).

Our driver took us there. The fact that these two are in the same place and can be reached in five minutes is fantastic. There’s no reason to worry about driving in a hurry.

You would probably need an hour to see both and enjoy the incredible natural formations.

A woman posing at Broken beach, Nusa Penida

BROKEN BEACH

When you get to the places where Broken and Angel’s Billabong are, it’s up to you which one you would love to see first—they are 5 minutes apart! Broken Beach is on your left.

It looks like a round pond with the ocean rushing below a rock bridge.

The name comes from the way the rocks around this beach are shaped, which looks like an arch.

This arch-shaped thing looks like a hole in the wall at first glance, which makes it look like it’s broken.

Photo of Broken beach

It’s a great place to stroll around, but if you want to see more of the ocean, make sure to stroll around the nearby rocks.

You should know that there might be other tourists there depending on when you get there, so be ready to wait a little while to take pictures.

ANGEL’S BILLABONG

To the right of Broken Beach, around the coast, is Angel’s Billabong, a beautiful natural feature on Bali, Indonesia’s island of Nusa Penida.

This one-of-a-kind rock formation on the southwest coast of the island forms a peaceful natural infinity pool with a view of the huge Indian Ocean.

The pool’s clear water makes it a safe and peaceful place to swim at low tide, revealing a fascinating underwater world.

ANGEL’S BILLABONG Photo in Nusa Penida, Bali.

CRYSTAL BAY

Our day trip to Nusa Penida ended with a visit to Crystal Bay Beach. It looks like this is where most tours end, whether they are private or with a group.

If I’m being honest, though, this beach wasn’t very interesting. As you might guess, it was very crowded, and we didn’t like it at all.

There was no shade at all, but they did have sunbeds with umbrellas that I think you could rent.

At this point, though, you won’t have time to rest because you need to get back to where the tour company is on the harbour so they can take you back to Sunar.

We did go swimming, though, because it was too hot and we needed to cool off. They also have some simple shower rooms that cost less than £1 or $1.

Absolutely! A day trip from Seminyak to Nusa Penida is an adventure you will never forget, full of amazing views and one-of-a-kind activities.

The natural beauty of this island paradise will take your breath away, from the stunning Kelingking Beach to the mesmerising Broken Beach.

Many people visit Nusa Penida to explore hidden caves, snorkel with colourful marine life, or just relax in the calm waters.

While a day trip may not cover everything this island offers, it is a great way to get away from Seminyak’s busy streets and take in the wonders of nature.

PENIDA TOUR – DO IT YOURSELF

For those of you that plan to spend a few days on Nusa Penida Island, I have put together the perfect 3 Day Nusa Penida Itinerary which includes all of the spots on the tours mentioned above, plus more!

DIY TOUR – DAY 1

Here is an overview for Day 1 of your DIY Penida Tour:

  • Crystal Bay
  • KelingKing Beach

CRYSTAL BAY

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida is a palm tree haven and an awesome snorkeling location on the west coastline of Nusa Penida Island.

Crystal Bay is one of the best beaches to explore and the perfect spot to begin your DIY Tour!

The drive towards Crystal Bay is an experience in itself, passing through local villages and palm tree lined roads, eventually coming to a dead end on the beachfront.

There is a number of beach shack cafes, traditional temples, a coconut palm tree forest, and colorful umbrellas along the shoreline at Crystal Bay, all of which overlook a gorgeous beach cove and a nearby rock island.

Just offshore, there is a colorful reef system beneath the surface of Crystal Bay Nusa Penida, a very popular spot for snorkeling with all sorts of fish, turtles, and other sea critters.

ANGEL’S BILLABONG

Angel’s Billabong is one of Nusa Penida’s most popular attractions. This natural infinity pool is framed by rock cliffs and hangs out over the ocean and it’s a must-see location on your DIY Tour!

Angels Billabong can be found on the far most western tip of Nusa Penida’s coastline.

When you arrive at Angel’s Billabong there is a parking lot on the cliffs you will be asked to pay a parking fee of 10,000 IDR.

There are a number of viewpoints at Angel’s Billabong, my personal favorite was down in the infinity pool itself. The water is clear as crystal and the temperature of the water is just right.

Due to its popularity, the best time to visit Angel’s Billabong is early morning to avoid crowds.

BROKEN BEACH

Broken Beach is one of many awesome locations on the island and it is not to be missed on your DIY Tour!

Featuring a natural archway that stretches over turquoise waters, it’s easy to see how it got its name Broken Beach.

Although you can’t go swimming at Broken Beach, it is such an unreal setting in itself.

You can take a panoramic walk all the way around the cliffs and discover several different viewpoints offering incredible views of Broken Beach.

Broken Beach Nusa Penida has become a very popular spot for tourists and locals alike, so if you want to have this awesome location to yourself and avoid the crowds I recommend visiting in the early hours of the morning.

KELING KING BEACH

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and it’s the best location for sunset to finish off Day 1 of your DIY Tour.

Kelingking Beach has quickly become the biggest tourist attraction on the island thanks to Instagram and for a good reason, I mean just look at this view!

Keling King Beach, also known as Kelingking Secret Point, is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

The reason why Kelingking Beach is such a popular location is that the cliffs form the shape of a T-Rex.

The head of the T-Rex can be seen on the left of the bay and the body and tail wrap around to the right.

Access to the beach is possible but explore at your own risk. There are stairs and railings made out of timber that lead down the spine of Kelingking to the beach, though don’t completely rely on this and take your time when descending down to the shoreline.

Kelingking Beach also boasts multiple viewpoints around the edge of the cliffs, offering spectacular views up and down the coastline of Nusa Penida.

DIY TOUR – DAY 2

Here is an overview for Day 2 of your DIY Penida Tour:

  • Rumah Pohon Treehouse
  • Goa Giri Putri Cave

Atuh Beach is hands-down one of the most beautiful beaches on Nusa Penida Island, featuring a large cove with crystalline waters, golden sands, and a coconut palm forest.

Atuh Beach is located on the far most eastern point of Nusa Penida Island. From the main town of Toya Pakeh, it’s approximately a 45-minute drive to reach Atuh Beach.

Pantai Atuh Beach can be accessed from either the left-hand side or the right-hand side of the cliffs via the concrete steps that are cut into the side of the mountain.

The entrance fee you will have to pay to visit Atuh Beach is 10,000 IDR.

It’s the perfect spot to go for a swim to cool off and beach bum under one of many straw umbrellas that line the shoreline.

There is also a couple of small beach cafes selling fresh Indonesian cuisine, cold beers, and fresh coconuts.

You could easily spend a couple of hours down on Atuh Beach and not get bored.

DIAMOND BEACH

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida features a glistening white sand beach surrounded by verdant cliffs and turquoise water.

Diamond Beach Penida is located on the far most eastern point of  Nusa Penida Island .

When you arrive at the car park you will have to pay a small entrance fee of 10,000 IDR before making your way down the stairs to the beach.

There are two beach areas at Diamond Beach, one has vivid green mossy rocks and tidal rock pools but unfortunately quite of bit of trash was washed up on the sand here.

The other area of Diamond Beach boasts glistening white sand, coconut palm trees, small caves, and calm waters which is the perfect spot for swimming.

A small warung resides down on Diamond Beach Bali where you can purchase cold refreshments and local dishes such as mie goreng and nasi goreng for as little as $3 to $5.

RUMAH POHON TREE HOUSE

Rumah Pohon Tree House can be found on the far eastern tip of the island and it’s one of the best places to visit in Nusa Penida!

At the jump-off point, there’s a small ticket office where you will have to pay 5,000 IDR for the entrance ticket to Rumah Pohon Tree House.

The hike down the ridge takes no more than five or ten minutes to the first viewpoint that overlooks the bay known as Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu).

Once you are satisfied with marveling at Thousand Island viewpoint, continue the adventure further down the ridge and you will see the Nusa Penida Treehouse on your left-hand side.

If you want to get that perfect Instagram photo of the Nusa Penida Treehouse you can stand on the hill on the right-hand side of the track to capture the best angle.

Don’t end your adventure here, hike for another two minutes past the treehouse to yet another awesome viewpoint of the cliffs and beaches!

TELETUBBIES HILL

Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill) is best known for its lush green rolling hills and incredible viewpoints that overlook the entire Nusa Penida Island.

The best way to explore Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill) is on foot. Take a short hike to get a different perspective of this incredible landscape from nearby peaks.

When you arrive, you’ll see rolling fields of green and rounded peaks that give Bukit Teletubbies Hill its name.

On a clear day, you can see the neighboring island of Lombok and the almighty  Mount Rinjani , the second-largest volcano in Indonesia.

In the valleys between Teletubbies Hill are terraced fields of food crops and random clusters of coconut palm trees.

I recommend flying a drone camera here to capture Bukit Teletubbies from above.

GOA GIRI PUTRI CAVE

The Goa Giri Putri Cave is one of Nusa Penida’s most underrated tourist spots but not to be missed on your DIY tour around the island.

Pura Goa Giri Putri cave temple is located on the northeastern tip of Nusa Penida Island.

Take the winding staircase midway up the mountain and you’ll be greeted by a man that will bless you with some holy water to the forehead before heading into the cave.

The entrance fee is by donation, so something around 20,000 IDR will be acceptable.

Pura Goa Giri Putri cave is an impressive 300 meters long and 15 meters tall.

Follow the pathway to the end of Goa Giri Putri cave to a viewpoint of a small village in the lush green mountainside.

You can exit the cave here or head back the same way you came to the entrance.

DIY TOUR – DAY 3

Here is an overview for Day 3 of your DIY Penida Tour:

  • Manta Point Snorkeling
  • Peguyangan Blue Stairs & Waterfall

MANTA POINT SNORKELING

Snorkeling at Manta Point Nusa Penida is one of the most epic experiences to be had on the island.

The majority of the manta point snorkeling tours operate out of Toya Pakeh Bay on a daily basis and the best time to go is early in the morning around 7:00 am.

You can head down to one of the many tourist offices in Toya Pakeh to organize your snorkeling trip to Manta Point.

The cost of a snorkeling tour is around 200,000 IDR and I recommend booking the day before to secure your spot on the boat.

The tour includes all snorkeling equipment and it will stop at 3 different snorkeling sites – Manta Point, Toya Pakeh Wall, and Crystal Bay.

The tour starts between 7:00 am – 8:00 am and finishes around 12:00 pm.

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

Snorkeling at Manta Point is the best way to begin the 3rd day of your DIY Tour!

BANAH CLIFF VIEWPOINT

Banah Cliff Nusa is one of the best viewpoints along the southwest coastline of Nusa Penida Island.

Banah Cliff is not quite as popular as Kelingking Beach , though it’s equally as impressive in my opinion.

There are not just not one but two incredible viewpoints at Banah Cliff.

At the jump-off point to the right is the panoramic view and sunset point and to the left is the official Banah Cliff.

The panoramic viewpoint at Banah Cliff Nusa Penida faces west and offers extreme views of surrounding cliffs, perched high above the ocean.

On a clear day, you can actually see the tail of the T-Rex at Kelingking Beach.

Be very careful when taking photos at Banah Cliff as there is no safety barrier to protect you from falling hundreds of feet to the ground. Know your limits.

The other viewpoint at Banah Cliff faces east and offers an awesome viewpoint of an arched rock island just off the coastline. Again, please watch your step along these rocky cliffs.

TEMBELING BEACH & LAGOONS

Tembeling is one of my favorite spots to visit on Nusa Penida Island.

Featuring a number of cool things to see including pristine white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, natural lagoons, hidden caves, and cliff-jumping spots.

Tembeling Beach and Lagoons are located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

See below for 5 awesome things that you can see and do at Tembeling Beach;

PEGUYANGAN WATERFALL

Last but not least on your 3-Day DIY Tour, the ultimate adventure awaits at Peguyangan Waterfall and the Instafamous Blue Stairs.

This location is off the beaten path and it takes a little longer to get to, though it is an experience not to be missed during your visit.

At the jump-off point for Peguyanngan Waterfall, you will have to pay a small parking fee of 5,000 IDR.

A sarong is also required to be worn as there is a sacred temple at the bottom of the cliffs right next to Peguyangan Waterfall.

If you don’t have a towel or sarong to wear, they can be rented from the parking attendant for an additional 10,000 IDR.

There are 750 blue stairs that are impressively constructed into the side of the cliff giving access to Peguyangan Waterfall.

It’s a good workout hiking down and then back up again that’s for sure!

There are several viewpoints that make for great photo opportunities as you make your way down to Peguyangan Waterfall.

After a 20-minute hike down the blue stairs, you’ll arrive at the sacred water temple that has 4 waterspouts.

The waterfall itself is not your common 50-meter meter waterfall, like those you will find in  Bali , but rather a waterspout between a crack in a rock where crystal clear water flows out into tiered rock pools and into the ocean.

GETTING AROUND NUSA PENIDA ISLAND

Nusa Penida is quite a large island and it can take up to one hour to get from one side of the island to the other. The best means of transport on the island is on a scooter.

The roads on Nusa Penida Island are not very well maintained so please be aware of this and take it slow on the loose gravel roads.

Be sure to have travel insurance and wear a helmet as an extra precaution.

There are a number of scooter rental shops dotted along the beachfront at Toya Pakeh harbor that will be able to sort you out with some wheels when you arrive on the island.

Alternatively, most accommodations will help you to organize a scooter rental for the time you plan to spend on Nusa Penida Island.

You can expect to pay around 70,000 IDR per day for a Nusa Penida scooter rental with a full tank of gas.

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the biggest of the three Nusa Islands (and most epic), located just off from mainland Bali. BUT did you know it’s only a 30-minute boat trip from the Sanur Harbor in Bali so it’s VERY easy to reach quickly for a Nusa Penida day trip if you are staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta. There are so many awesome things to do on Nusa Penida Island and there are two main different Nusa Penida day trip tours I suggest you look at.

a man swimming under a manta ray in the ocean.

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trips from Bali

In this blog post, I’m going to detail the two most popular Nusa Penida day trips from Bali. The first option is the Manta Ray Snorkel Tour . It’s honestly the most amazing experience to swim with gentle Giant Manta Rays. The tour takes you from Bali to Penida to snorkel with mantas but also to snorkel at other locations where you will find beautiful corals and even spot turtles. The second tour is the BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour , which basically takes you to all of the most iconic viewpoints and beaches on Nusa Penida in one day.

BEST NUSA PENIDA TOURS!

These are the four most popular Nusa Penida Tours. I’ve done all four and they are AWESOME !

tree house nusa penida, nusa penida treehouse, bali treehouse accommoation, tree house villa bali, bamboo treehouse bali, rumah pohon treehouse, the treehouse bali, airbnb treehouse bali

  • Manta Ray Snorkel Tour (from Bali) – Most amazing experience to swim with Giant Manta’s.
  • Manta Ray Snorkel Tour (from Penida) This is the cheaper option if already on Nusa Penida.
  • BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour (from Bali) Most booked day trip fro Bali to Penida with all highlights
  • Nusa Penida Car Rental with Driver : Great way to see all the highlights and tourist spots.

BEST NUSA PENIDA DAY TOURS

If you are staying in Bali.. take a day trip on a speedboat to explore the highlights of Nusa Penida. It takes just 35 minutes to get from Bali to Nusa Penida by speed boat. Yep, in just one day you can snorkel with Manta rays and visit lots of the best beaches and viewpoints.

Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour

Manta Ray Nusa Penida Tour (from Bali): Snorkeling with Manta Rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best wildlife encounters I’ve had in my life. The Manta Rays are majestic and very friendly. With a wingspan of 5m, these gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them. The Nusa Penida Manta Ray Snorkel Tour includes pick up and drop off from your hotel in Bali and all transport and tickets included.

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour : Get picked-up from your Bali hotel, take a 35-minute fast boat to Nusa Penida and then visit the most popular viewpoints, beaches and snorkel spots on the island. This small Nusa Penida Highlights Tour group tour is the most highly reviewed day trip for Nusa Penida Island. You’ll visit all the most popular spots and can request certain viewpoints on your itinerary. Places you will visit are sites like the ones listed below:

Angel’s Billabong

  • Kelingking T-Rex Beach

Broken Beach

  • Rumah Pohon Treehouse
  • Snorkeling at Crystal Bay
  • Thousand Island Viewpoint

Okay, that was a the brief overview of the two tours I will detail in this article. Below, I’m going to go into the exact details of what each tour involves as I have personally done them both!

Nusa Penida Day Trip – Snorkeling with Manta Rays

This is a tour you simply cannot afford to pass on. I know for some people they are on a budget in Bali or they prefer not to book tours but I guarantee you, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to float around with Giant Manta Rays.

  • Swim with the massive reef manta rays of Nusa Penida
  • Visit Crystal Bay, Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach
  • Snorkel in scenic spots around Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan
  • Enjoy a delicious beachside lunch overlooking a white sand beach
  • Explore some of the most diverse reefs on the planet

nusa penida self tour

The tour includes lunch, and several other snorkeling spots near Manta Point where you can see turtles, corals and tropical fish. You’ll also cruise through a few beaches on top of the Manta Point snorkel.

As soon as we plunged into the water, we found ourselves looking directly at a huge Manta Ray, one of the most impressive beings of the sea. It was completely surprising, I assumed we’d be hanging around waiting for them. More than five of these Manta Rays were making repeated circuits in the bay, delighting the cluster of snorkelers. Unlike turtles or fish that tend to swim away at the presence of humans, the Manta Rays were consistently interactive, circling back time and again. They would often approach you directly and then quickly swerve off to one side at the very last moment.

  • Lunch Included

Snorkeling with Manta Rays Availability

You can use this calendar below to see the availability of tours. It’s important to book this tour in advance during high season as it can be a very popular activity on Nusa Penida and they try and limit the number of boats in the water.

nusa penida self tour

Gamat Bay Snorkeling

As part of the Manta Ray Snorkeling tour , you will get to snorkel at Gamat Bay aswell. We jumped off the boat, and immediately realized the water at Gamat Bay is much colder than at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. I’m not sure why that is. The second thing we noticed was the incredible coral structures and rock formations beneath the surface. The depth ranged from a few meters closer to shore all the way down to perfect free-diving depth of 5-20 meters.

Our guide told us this is where you can see a turtle if you are lucky. We looked long and hard and finally, we found a turtle who let us chill near him for ten minutes as he went about his business. The water clarity at Gamat was perfect!

BEST of Nusa Penida Tour: Epic Day Trip

This BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour from Bali via fast-boat is the best way to see Nusa Penida in just one day. The itinerary looks like the following:

  • Hotel pickup by car
  • Fast-boat to Nusa Penida
  • 4-5 Sightseeing spots on Nusa Penida
  • Fast-boat to Bali
  • Hotel drop-off by car

nusa penida self tour

The BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour is the most convenient way to see Nusa Penida in just one day. There are three set spots on the itinerary but you can customize the schedule and spots to visit by discussing with the tour guide and tour company, which is quite important. You may have some bucketvlist items that you want to guarantee that you see so just discuss that in advance and they will make it happen!

Below I’m going to detail each of the spots on the itinerary and/or those spots you can add to the itinerary by customizing it!

Kelingking, kelingking secret point, kelingking point, kelingking beach nusa penida, kelingking nusa penida, kelingking secret point nusa penida

Atuh Beach is one of the most picturesque and beautiful beaches on Nusa Penida, an island off the southeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia. It’s s a stunning white sand beach surrounded by the huge cliffs and remarkable rock formations. An arch sits directly out from the shore while several islets string off in the distance.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, found on the far eastern edge of Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is famous for its incredible natural scenery. The beach showcases an extraordinary setting marked by clean white sands, transparent turquoise waters, and high cliffs. The beach’s distinct rock structures, which look like shining diamonds, give this beach its unique name. A carved staircase descending the cliffs allows entry to the beach, presenting stunning wide-angle views on the way down.

But the key feature here is the rock shaped like a diamond in the shallow waters. After all, I think this diamond-like rock is what gives the beach its name.

Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

The Tree House (Rumah Pohon) on  Nusa Penida  has become something of an iconic spot. It is perched up on the mountain at Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) viewpoint near Atuh Beach.

It is part of the Thousand Island viewpoint area costing only 10,000 rupiah to park and enter, which is less than $1 USD. The best part about this treehouse is that it is actually a house and you can rent it out for pretty cheap considering how popular this spot has become and how insane the view is.

Teletubbies Hill

Teletubbies Hill is a great spot to understand just how diverse the landscapes are on Nusa Penida and it was incredibly interesting flying the drone here scoping out all the different contours, valleys and canyons in this region.

Angel’s Billabong is one of the magical spots to visit on Nusa Penida. A crystal clear tide pool cascades into the ocean on the east coast of Nusa Penida. Angel’s Billabong is an enchanting natural wonder located on the island of Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia. This unique rock formation, nestled on the island’s southwestern coast, forms a tranquil natural infinity pool that overlooks the vast Indian Ocean. During low tide, the pool’s crystal clear water provides a safe and serene spot for swimming, revealing a mesmerizing underwater world.

Broken Beach is an incredible little cove on Nusa Penida island. The highlight of the cove and the reason it is called Broken Beach is due to the archway that wraps around the bay allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean. Broken Beach is also one of the spots on the  Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali .

The arch at Broken Beach has been formed over many, many years and is now a true spectacle. From above the cove appears almost circular and closed in, however, at eye level the arch is quite high.

Kelingking Beach

The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-rex doesn’t disappoint. I still remember the moment I laid eyes on Kelingking Beach. I watched the crystal clear water slowly form into a wave before crashing below us, in what seemed like slow motion.

Nusa Penida has so many amazing views making it hard to pick ‘the best one’. But when the cliffs form in the shape of a Tyrannosaurus Rex at Kelingking Beach it is bound to be a crowd favorite. Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida is one of the MOST epic spots in all of Indonesia and worth voyaging out to visit from Bali.

Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay is probably the most popular beach on Nusa Penida for a number of reasons. It is the best sunset beach, facing directly west. This alone makes it a winner for people trying to have a sunset beer and watch the sun go down.

It’s also the jump-off spot for snorkel tours and is only a 30-minute drive from the main port, Toyapakeh. Most importantly, unlike many of the crazy beaches on Penida, you can snorkel and swim with relaxing conditions.

Of course, if you have more time than just a day trip you can check out my blog post about my 27 favorite things to do on Nusa Penida and enjoy exploring the island.

TOP 3 PLACES TO STAY ON NUSA PENIDA

I’ve written a massive, detailed guide about the Best Places To Stay on Nusa Penida …. BUT If you just want me three favorites right now, here they are!

a pool with lounge chairs and a thatched roof.

  • My TOP Pick: Atalaya Villas – Bungalow Style, Beautiful Palm Trees, Great Location.
  • Beach Bungalow: Santen Bungalows – Stay on the beach, Best Value for Money
  • Luxury: Nay Palad Hideaway – Oceanfront, Beach Access, Beautiful Pool

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  • Book your ticket:   Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go . You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook .
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida Tour – Everything You Should Know Before You Go

Just 45 minutes from Bali by boat, Nusa Penida has beautiful views, stunning landscapes, and one of the most gorgeous beaches we’ve ever seen. If you’re thinking about doing a Nusa Penida tour , this post covers everything you need to know before booking.

What’s in our guide to a Nusa Penida tour?

If you know anything about Stephen and me, you’ll know that we hardly ever recommend tours. We prefer to travel independently, staying away from the tourist crowds and seeing things at our own pace.

But the spectacularly beautiful Nusa Penida Island, not far from the south shores of Bali, is a tricky place to travel independently.

For a start, there is little public transport available, and you can’t even hire an ojek (motorbike with driver) without a lot of hassle. Even taxis are hard to come by.

Lots of tourists rent motorbikes when they get to Nusa Penida. If that’s your plan, read the section below about driving on the island before you do it!

Most people see the main sights of the island on a guided tour. You can choose to:

  • Get to Nusa Penida yourself, spend a few nights on the island, and book your tour while you’re there.
  • Take a one day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali, squeezing everything into about 10 hours, depending on traffic.

We did the first option, but the tour is basically the same either way.

If you want to see the incredible sights on Nusa Penida, read on to discover…

What you Need to Know to Plan Your Nusa Penida Tour

Nusa penida video tour.

Here’s what you’ll see on your Nusa Penida tour. Watch the video and then use the post to plan your trip!

Should you choose a West Nusa or East Nusa tour?

West nusa penida tour.

The west side of the island is the more popular one — and rightly so. It takes you to visit four scenic spots, including the most perfect beach we’ve ever seen!

kelingkin beach nusa penida

This is the tour we chose. It goes to:

  • Angel’s Billabong . A natural tidal pool, swimmable at low tide.
  • Broken Beach . An inaccessible beach with an impressive stone archway.
  • Kelingking Beach . The most beautiful beach on earth?
  • Crystal Bay . A great beach for swimming and sunbathing.

East Nusa Penida Tour

If you can’t stand crowds, you might want to opt for the east side of the island, where fewer tourists go.

The East Nusa Penida Tour goes to:

  • Atuh. A simply gorgeous Nusa Penida beach.
  • Raja Lima. A viewpoint that’s perfect for Instagram.
  • Gili Putri Cave. A Balinese Hindu cave temple.
  • Teletubbies Hills. Green rolling hills named for their resemblance to the Teletubbies’ home.

Sights and Highlights of the West Nusa Penida Tour

Angel’s billabong, nusa penida.

After a juddery hour on the road, driving in a long line of almost identical four-wheel-drive SUVs, we arrived at Angel’s Billabong. The parking lot was jammed. Was this tour going to be a terrible mistake?

busy parking lot near angel's billabong nusa penida

As we walked along the cement trail to the viewpoints, we weren’t feeling much better about our choice. Every space along the cliff held a girl in a bikini top striking adorable poses while her boyfriend took pictures. Actually, that’s not quite true. Only the Western girls were inappropriately dressed!

Side note: Yes, I know I shouldn’t judge people based on their choice of clothing, but wearing next to nothing in a relatively conservative country is just not cool. Would it kill you to show some respect by throwing on a beach cover-up?

We pushed our way through the crowds for our own photos and selfies and finally climbed down to the Billabong. Though the waves were crashing into the pool and churning back out to see, one guy ventured out near the edge.

man swimming in angel's billabong with huge waves crashing

The crowd gasped as an especially large wave yanked him off his feet and threatened to drag him out to sea. He managed to regain his footing and retreated back to safety.

Angel’s Billabong is only safe for a swim during low tide and when the waves are small. If your guide says to get out of the water, get out of the water.

Broken Beach, Nusa Penida

Once we were done at Angel’s Billabong, our guide, Madé, walked us a short way down the trail to Broken Beach.

The actual beach, being at the bottom of a steep cliff, is inaccessible from the top. The only activity here is to admire the stone archway leading into the beach and take more photos for Instagram!

If you walk across the archway, you’ll get the best view of the beach. When we were there, sadly, there was a dead dog washed up on shore.

You get used to this kind of contrast when you travel in countries like Indonesia. Good and bad often come hand-in-hand, all becoming part of your travel experience.

(If you’re interested in helping the stray dogs on Bali, check out the Bali Animal Welfare Association ) →

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida

At first, we thought that Kelingking Beach was just another pretty viewpoint, where we’d snap a few pictures and move onto the next thing. Then, we noticed that there were people down on the beach, hundreds of feet below where we stood.

This is where our Nusa Penida tour took a turn towards the incredible.

Kelingking Beach is best described with this picture.

Kelingking beach from above

It is a perfect stretch of golden sand in a perfectly protected bay. Looking down (way down!) at the beach from the cliffs above is a dizzying experience.

When Madé, our tour guide, said “You can go down”, I didn’t believe it. How could we possibly get from here, way in the sky, to there, down at the sea?

As it turns out, there is a trail, if it can be called that.

It dips down off the plateau and onto the ridge that juts out into the sea. At the beginning, it is fairly steep and precarious, with low fences made of branches lining each side.

steep trail down to kelingking beach

The second half of the trail is steeper, in worse repair, more crowded, and even more terrifying. If you choose to go down, you’ll need nerves of steel and arms and legs to match.

steeper trail down to kelingking beach

As we slowly scrambled our way down, sweaty tourists on their way up assured us it was worth it. Starting to feel breathless and dizzy from the extreme height, I wasn’t so sure. If Stephen hadn’t been there egging me on, I would have turned around after 5 minutes.

But I’m so glad I didn’t!

Kelingking is the most beautiful beach we’ve ever sunk our toes into.

Only a small percentage of the tourists up top ever make it down to the beach. The climb makes it feel all the more special — like you’re in a secret club of crazy brave people.

tourists in bikinis and swimsuits on beautiful kelingking beach

After playing in the crashing waves for a while, we sat on the beach and absorbed the views.

Though we loved the beach, I have to admit I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle the climb back up! I resigned myself to being stranded for the rest of my life on the stunning beach. But, as the tide came in, leaving only a tiny bit of beach exposed, I realized I would have to leave with everyone else.

My worry was all for nothing. Going up was much easier than coming down! Plus, the people in front of us were so slow that I had plenty of time to rest and catch my breath.

Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida

After the sweaty, dusty climb out of Kelingking Beach, we considered skipping Crystal Bay and heading back early. But, we had visited there four years ago when we were on Nusa Penida and really wanted to see how much it had changed.

man climbing a tree root in crystal bay nusa penida

Another 40-minute drive took us to the familiar beach.

In 2014, there were only two small drink stalls and a small handful of people on the beach. Now, it is lined with little restaurants, beach chairs, and people soaking up the sun.

By the time we arrived, many of the day trippers and boat trippers had already left, so it was busy but not overcrowded.

Sinking into the crystal blue water and washing off the accumulated grit, sunscreen, and sweat from our day tour on Nusa Penida was the best feeling in the world. Crystal Bay made the perfect end to a tour that, if not perfect, was well worth the time and money.

How much does a Nusa Penida tour cost?

We were already on the island when we decided to do a tour of Nusa Penida. Before we booked, I emailed four of the main Nusa Penida tour companies for pricing and details.

Two of them never replied and the two that did offered me the same tour at significantly different prices.

This is typical in Indonesia, where pricing is often based on getting you to pay as much as possible, rather than offering the same price to everyone.

  • Penida Tours was the most expensive at 1.35 million IDR (94 USD) per person.
  • Discover Nusa Penida offered us the same tour at 1.5 million IDR (104 USD) for two people.

Instead of going with either of these companies, we asked our hotel to arrange the tour. They use a local tour company called Sampalan Trans Company. Our Nusa Penida tour cost us 700K IDR (50 USD) for a car and driver for a full day. We arranged the tour at around 8pm the night before we wanted to go.

What is included on a tour?

Our tour included:

  • Car and driver for a full day
  • Transportation to Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay
  • All entry fees and parking fees were included

The more expensive tours also include:

  • Lunch at a restaurant (value 110K IDR / 8 USD for two people)
  • English-speaking guide (our guide only spoke a little English)

Should you do a Nusa Penida day tour from Bali?

If you’re going to do a day trip to Nusa Penida, you’ll have to book everything in Bali or before you leave home. This greatly simplifies the trip, but will also cost you more.

A Nusa Penida day trip from Bali is busy, but you’ll just be able to squeeze in all the Nusa Penida must sees!

crowds looking over angel's billagong

Most of the Nusa Penida tour companies offer the exact same things, with varying prices.

The only major difference can be in the quality of fast boat you get to take. It’s important to travel with a reliable company, since the fast boats can often be late or have mechanical problems — and the safety levels can also vary!

Expect to pay around 100 USD per person for the full day with everything included.

If you like to book ahead, this day tour from Bali includes everything I cover in this post and has excellent reviews.

This tour costs a little less but it doesn’t have any reviews yet!

You can also do a 2-day tour from Bali that includes Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. This tour includes and overnight stay on Lembongan, plus snorkelling on both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. More Nusa Penida Tours →

What should you bring on a Nusa Penida tour?

  • Bathing suit & towel – you can swim at Kelingking and Crystal Bay
  • Beach cover up – to be respectful of the Indonesian culture
  • Suncreen – most of the day you’ll be in direct sunlight
  • Lots of water – it’s easy to get dehydrated on this dry island
  • Shoes other than flip-flops – the Kelingking climb is much easier in proper shoes
  • Camera – to capture the best views in the world
  • A small backpack – don’t bring a big beach bag or purse, as you’ll need your hands free for Kelingking

Things You Should Know Before You go to Nusa Penida

1. the roads are insanely lousy..

Except for a few nicely paved stretches, the roads on Nusa Penida are indescribably bad. Roads that were originally meant for a few local villagers on motorbikes are now packed with scores of SUVs every day.

In most places, the asphalt has worn away to infrequent chunks, which are connected by rocky, sandy, potholes. Even the good parts of road are narrow, winding, and crowded, making the driving hair-raising either way. It makes for a very bumpy ride.

line of tour vans on nusa penida

2. Avoid renting a motorbike on Nusa Penida.

When you first get to Nusa Penida, you might be fooled by the perfectly paved beach road into thinking that driving a motorbike there will be easy. But inland, the roads transform into pot-holed messes, with sandy rocks, huge potholes, steep hills, and little or no asphalt. Unless you’re an excellent motorbike driver, I wouldn’t even try it.

It might be all part of the adventure — or it could be a great way to earn a trip to the hospital.

If you want to know more about staying safe on a motorbike, read our complete guide to renting a scooter in Bali .

3. Everything is farther than it looks on the map.

Even though the sights look close together, don’t let that fool you. It takes about an hour to get between each stop. You’ll spend a good part of the day in the car, shaking and rattling your way from one destination to the next. If you’re prone to car sickness, take your nausea meds!

traffic jam on nusa penida

4. Nusa Penida is not the deserted paradise it once was.

If you’ve heard how secluded and tranquil Nusa Penida is, you’ll be in for a shock! The four destinations on the West Nusa Penida Tour are as crowded as the Mona Lisa on a holiday weekend. There are bikini-clad tourists everywhere, all jostling for that perfect Instagram shot.

At least that is what it was like in early July. If you visit in low season, you might have a better experience.

tourists waiting to get an instagram shot on nusa penida

5. The views will actually take your breath away.

Despite these setbacks, we did come away from the day thinking “that was great!” We love observing and interating with people from all different cultures. The landscapes are incredible and Kelingking Beach is an experience we’ll never forget.

6. You should definitely stay a few nights on Nusa Penida.

Unless you have time to stay for a few days on Nusa Penida, I would hesitate to recommend coming here at all. The great appeal of the island is the slow pace of life, away from the Aussie surfer dudes and ultra-spiritual yogis you find on Bali.

Great Places to Stay on Nusa Penida

We loved the beautiful Namaste bungalows , which is where we stayed on our 2014 trip to Nusa Penida. It’s about halfway between the fast boat dock at Tojapakeh and Crystal Bay.

namaste bungalow nusa penida

Just down the road from Namaste is Bintang Bungalows , where our good friends just stayed. They said it was great!

We also really enjoyed our villa at Petak Cottage on the north side of the island. It is walking distance to Penida Espresso, where they make delicious smoothie bowls. It also gave us an amazing view over Mount Agung as it was erupting!
