For many old school tattoo lovers, American traditional tattoo style is the only style. A lot of different common elements come to mind, but the old school tattoos were here first and for many the choice as their only tattoo style.

Among the most significant and acclaimed tattoo genres is American traditional tattoos.

First adopted by men, but as it progressed women were getting more traditional style inspired tattoos , too.

There are some basic characteristics of these tattoo designs that can help someone find their best tattoo artist and tattoo design.

Classic americana tattoo style – history of old school tattoos.

After World War II, the tattooed hero, Norman Collins aka Sailor Jerry pioneered this popular style in Hawaii which was the crossroads for millions of American men at the time. Such pieces imbue their bearers with the same ideas from which they were born: a rejection of mainstream culture and the search for a new identity with the revival of traditional style tattoos.

The first to follow the art were those who wanted to escape the limitations of society in search of something else. And they were none but mariners. Captain James Cook and the crew were inspired by their travels in the East and began to tattoo each other to share their travel stories.

With time, tattoos remained within a small section of the spectrum of American culture: Homeless sailors and circus freaks.

And as the various classes of American men united at Honolulu’s intersection during the war, there was a tattoo shop run by a heavily tattooed former Navy man named Sailor Jerry .

He refined his style through sheer mastery of the creative techniques into what we reverence as traditional style today.

American Traditional Tattoo Style Guide

The traditional tattoos can always be recognized by several distinct characteristics :

• they are highly saturated (which makes them look good on any skin tone)
• the designs looks simple (as in 2D) but looks can be deceiving
• less shading is used, usually minimal
• it is meant to look like a drawing
• outlines are bold and black
• colors are generously filled under the skin (which helps them age better)

American Traditional Tattoo Meanings – Common Elements & Symbols

American attoos include all kinds of symbolism from the most ancient to the most recent ones.

At first sight they seem very lucid, almost absurd, but they have a long history that brought these tattoo designs where they currently are.

Most common motifs are:

• lucky 13 tattoos
• ship (nautical)

These common classic americana tattoo motifs can have universal or a completely personal meaning.

Below we will explore the origin of each of these popular motifs with examples.

Swallow Tattoos

Traditional swallow tattoos are one of the most common old school tattoo motifs.

First associated with the sailors tattooing them to indicate they have sailed nautical 5000 miles, they are also associated with the idea of return. Swallows have a migration pattern to return home to San Juan Capistrano once a year, which brings out a strong connection to always coming back.

Additionally, some believed that if a sailor dies at sea, the tattooed swallow will carry his soul home to heaven.

In American old school tattoo culture , it was quite common to see swallows tattooed in pairs. Often, a sailor would get one swallow tattooed and upon his return home, would add the second to represent the successful end of the journey.

Anchor Tattoos

Traditional anchor tattoos are of course also tied to the sailor’s life, linking it to an early old school nautical motif.

At sea, the anchor is the most secure object in a sailor’s life.

This security can be metaphorically also applied to important people in our lives, which is why you would commonly see “Mom” on the anchor – hinting back with a mom tattoo to the most secure relationship in our life that keeps you grounded.

The anchor also represented a sailor’s ability to stay grounded and calm during various unforeseen obstacles and challenges the sea would present while they were away.

The traditional anchor tattoo design often has a ribbon along the bottom of the anchor, displaying the name of a family member or loved one, in constant memory while the sailor was away.

In the maritime life, some say anchor tattoos indicate that the sailor has reached the rank of boatswain. Also, wearing an anchor tattoo symbolized having crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

Shark Tattoos

Sailor Jerry had a real sailor’s approach to shark tattoos.

You want to hate ’em, but you gotta love ’em.

Getting an animal tattoos for many are about taking on its traits. Strong family ties are depicted with wolves or bears. Powerful personality with tigers.

But getting a shark tattoo is more about what you overcome. A shark on your arm says you’re willing to stand your ground. It says you’re not about to become someone else’s seafood.

Sailors would often get inked with a shark tattoo to protect them from dangers at sea.

Along those lines, the shark also showed others strength and the command of the sea, giving the confidence boost and protecting the sailor, as the shark has no natural predators in the ocean or in nature.

Its the motivator for the sailor to show confidence and control of the sea, while constantly moving forward.

Given sharks can never stop moving, this reference represented the constant journey of a sailor at sea.

Dragon Tattoos

The traditional dragon tattoos started thanks to Sailor Jerry.

He was in one of the first contacts with the Japanese tattoo masters. Jerry’s dragon tattoos were oriental and Asian inspired.

For many tattooed sailors, dragons symbolized that they have served in Asia.

Golden dragons on the other hand meant that one has navigated beyond the International Date Line.

Skull Tattoos

Traditional skull tattoos carry a strong memento mori  (remember your death in Latin) aspect with them.

Given that we take our tattoos with us to the grave, skulls and other death themes are important in the tattoo world.

On the other hand, in the ancient world and in Jerry’s day, skulls were often the marks of warriors, mercenaries and adventurers – people whose life choices represented coming to terms with death or setting oneself against it.

That said, skulls are commonly represented with daggers – either behind them or stabbing right through the or through other animate objects like in the example of butterfly skull tattoos .

Because daggers were weapons easy to hide, they were quite often used by murderers and traitors. The dagger therefore is an ambivalent symbol: it can represent both the hero and the villain.

Snake Tattoos

Snake tattoos represent potency and power, rebirth and new beginnings.

They are typically shown coiled and ready to strike, or already biting the hand.

There is a strong representation of a don’t-tread-on-me mentality, which gives the snake totem a powerful message of warding off evil, misfortune and potential brawls.

Sailor Jerry’s favorite snake to ink was a King Cobra.

Snakes or serpents are believed to be one of the oldest symbols being used in mythology, religion, and art. Accordingly, it appears in Egyptian iconography, it’s one of the most important symbols in the Bible.

Depending on culture, in some places on the Earth snakes can be seen as foe or friend, a symbol of life or death; truly dualistic element.

Panther Tattoos

Traditional panther tattoos are usually done as totems of prowess and virility, with an added element of symbolizing a connectedness to nature.

Sailor Jerry was famous for his panther tattoos, representing these animals particularly ferocious and masculine.  He would draw their claws red, often bloody, open jaws and occasionally in the company of a naked woman.

Among other meanings are guardianship, freedom and courage.

In the traditional tattoo world, there has been a variety of ways the panther was depicted. One of, if not the most popular, is the crawling panther. This is tattooed to give the appearance of the panther crawling across the wearer’s skin.

Panther tattoos were at their highest popularity during the ‘50s and ‘60s, when soldiers and greasers alike got tattoos of the predator during World War II.

It’s likely that so many of them choose the design because of its see-it-a-mile-away, tough-guy aesthetic, but some people think it’s because the dense shading of the design made a perfect cover-up.

Lucky 13 Tattoos

Lucky 13 tattoos are heavily tied with the spiteful nature of many tattoo lovers.

Historically on the margins, this subculture of superstitious sailors, prison gangs and outlows liked turning common and traditional symbols on its head.

That’s why Sailor Jerry took the number 13 – infamous for bringing bad luck – and proclaimed it the lucky number in the tattoo world.

The old school tattoo motto of facing your fears and bad luck was sealed for years to come.

This is one of the explanations for the Friday 13th to be commonly known as the tattoo holiday, when tattoo shops will charge $13 (or £13 in the UK) for certain tattoos on this day.

Eagle Tattoos

Traditional eagle tattoos were the symbol of an idealized America for the old school tattoo master Sailor Jerry.

A country that stands with the courage of its convictions and backs down for no one. Jerry’s eagle tattoos are fierce and iconic, often depicted in association with the flag.

Pin up Girl Tattoos

Traditional pin-up girl tattoos were done by sailors in the old times to give them the only connection to their old life in their hometowns while out at sea.

The term pin up represents the ideal of femininity, but also subverts the usual ways women are portrayed in art.

From maidenly perfection to vixenish temptation.

Nowadays, both women and men wear pin up girl tattoos.

Popularized in the World War II as a morale booster for airmen, seamen, and the likes of the army, these pin up girls weren’t always representations of a woman that someone knew, but rather a “fantasized” version of a good luck charm for those on duty.

They represented “back home”, where things were more relaxed and fun, instead of the horrors of war.

Ship Tattoos

Traditional ship tattoos displayed the boats as both practical and metaphorical for the sailors.

It’s where you go for work as a sailor – but it also represents danger and adventure.

150 Traditional Old School Tattoo Designs

Old school tattoos, or American traditional tattoos, are the foundation of tattoo art in the Western world.

For almost a hundred years now, this style has been among the most popular and fascinating movements.

Even the development of new trends and techniques hasn’t put an end to the reign of the classic American sailor tattoo.

In this article, we’re going to explore the history and meaning behind old school tattoos.

We’re also sharing some of our favorite designs – both original old school tattoos and more modern designs that they’ve inspired.

The history of old school American tattoos

Although there is evidence that various cultures around the world practiced tattooing for thousands of years, this form of body art took a relatively long time to reach Europe and North America.

It was only in the 1700s that European sailors began getting tattoos. The earliest evidence concerns the crew of the British captain James Cook.

During their voyages in the Pacific, sailors would get tattooed by the local communities.

In this manner, for Europeans and later Americans, tattoos became the domain of sailors: only sailors reached areas such as Polynesia, where it was easy to get a tattoo. The first tattooing business in the U.S. wouldn’t open until as late as 1870.

But the tattoos sailors received in Polynesia and other remote areas of the world were different than what we now describe as old school tattoos.

For example, most Polynesian tattoos were tribal patterns similar to the ones that the natives wore.

So what are American traditional tattoos?

What we now call ‘old school tattoos’, or classical tattoo designs, started to appear in the early 1900s and reached their heyday in the 1930s and 40s.

They were relatively simple designs, using color and a bold black outline. Importantly, there was little to no shading – the fill was mostly solid.

In addition to black, the palette originally included only three other colors: red, yellow, and green. Later on, artists began using purple ink as well.

Many people believe that for a traditional American tattoo to appear genuine today, you should stick to only these colors.

In terms of American traditional tattoo designs, some were more popular than others – partly because they held specific meanings for sailors.

Examples of traditional tattoo art include swallows, stars, pin ups, daggers, anchors, sharks, and Hawaiian motifs, among others. We’ll look at these staples of old school tattoos in more detail in the next section.

Not many people are aware that these simplistic designs have a fascinating story to tell. And that story starts with the tattoo legend, Norman Collins – better known as Sailor Jerry.

Sailor Jerry – the father of old school tattoos

Norman Collins – soon to be known as Sailor Jerry – was born in 1911 in Reno, Nevada. By the time he was a teenager, Collins had taken up travelling the country on freight trains.

This is when his passion for tattoos started. Initially, he’d create tattoos with only black ink, drawing them freehand using a needle. Back in those days, tattoos were nowhere near as popular in America as they are today.

In 1927, Collins met Gib ‘Tatts’ Thomas, another legendary tattoo artist, who taught him how to use a tattoo machine. Soon after that, he joined the Navy.

While in the service, Sailor Jerry traveled to China and Japan, where he developed a passion for traditional Asian art. He was the first Westerner to learn from Chinese and Japanese tattoo artists, which helped him develop his own signature style.

This style is what we’d come to know as old school tattoos. By the 1930s, Sailor Jerry had left the Navy and began working as a tattoo artist in Hawaii.

Then, in the 1940s, World War II brought thousands of American soldiers into the area. As it happens, Sailor Jerry’s tattoo studio was in the vicinity of Pearl Harbor.

This was a turning point for American tattoo art: thousands of soldiers on shore leave in Honolulu began frequenting Sailor Jerry’s studio. Before long, Sailor Jerry’s tattoos were known the world over.

In this way, Norman Collins pioneered the American classical tattoo designs.

This was only one of his achievements, though. He was famously always working towards improving his technique, corresponding with Japanese tattoo masters even at a time of open hostility between Japan and the U.S.

He also studied electronics and improved the way tattoo machines work, as well as introducing the use of purple ink in classic American tattoos.

Other notable figures

It would be inaccurate to say that Norman Collins was single-handedly responsible for popularizing classic American designs.

Before and after Sailor Jerry, there were a number of other tattoo artists who contributed to the creation of the style. Gus Wagner, Amund Dietzel, Herbert Hoffman , Bert Grimm and his student Bob Shaw are just some of the most significant figures in the movement.

Ed Hardy and Mike Malone, Sailor Jerry’s apprentices and legends in their own right, are also worth mentioning. It is to them that Collins left his Honolulu tattoo studio before his death in 1973.

Old school tattoo meanings

Armed with an understanding of the context and history behind classic tattoos, we can fully appreciate the American traditional tattoo meanings.

We’ve established that just before and after WWII, these tattoos were the marks of sailors, in the Navy and beyond. Later – from the 50s to the 80s – tattoos in America were marks of counterculture, often of the criminal kind.

As with every other kind of tattoo, old school designs often have personal meanings and only the wearer knows their full significance. Still, Sailor Jerry’s classic designs have universal meanings transcending the personal level of significance.

For example, since the sailor culture is rich in superstition, oftentimes tattoos served as protection from specific dangers that a sailor may encounter.

Many designs also marked achievements, such as reaching a landmark location or sailing a set number of miles.

The designs could also indicate the sailor’s position in the crew’s hierarchy, their status, or rank.

Many of the designs include a ribbon. Writing can be placed there, for example a name, date, or single-word statement. Phrases such as ‘Death before dishonor’ or ‘Homeward bound’ were also common additions.

Back in the day, most old school tattoos were flash designs. A flash is a design displayed in a catalogue or on the wall of a tattoo studio, reused for many customers. Essentially, it’s the opposite of a custom design.

Let’s look at specific traditional tattoo meanings, outlining the details of the most important designs.

Ship tattoos

A ship, as you may expect, represents all aspects of a sailor’s life. After all, a sailor’s entire existence is bound up in the vessel on which they work.

The ship is more than a workplace to a sailor. It also represents the freedom and adventure they experience while sailing.

Back in the day, a tattoo with a fully rigged ship meant that the sailor had travelled around Cape Horn in Chile.

A major milestone on the Clipper route – a traditional sailing route between Europe and the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand – Cape Horn was infamous for the extremely dangerous sailing conditions.

Anchor tattoos

Anchors are among the old school tattoo designs that survived the transformations in tattoo art through the decades. They are as popular in tattoos nowadays – in all styles, from geometric to watercolor – as they had been back in Sailor Jerry’s heydey.

An anchor represents protection , stability, and safety. On an active ship, it’s the strongest symbol of security in a sailor’s life.

Today, anchors still hold the same significance in tattoos. They represent the idea of security, as well as symbolizing being grounded and balanced.

Often, traditional tattoos with an anchor would also include the name of the sailor’s girlfriend or wife, or the word ‘Mom’.

This is a testament to how the person ‘grounds’ the sailor. It could also be a reminder of someone who’s waiting for them back on land.

Furthermore, the symbol of the anchor in a sailor’s tattoo refers to achieving the rank of Boatswain or Chief. It can also signify the milestone of having sailed across the Atlantic.

Swallow tattoos

A great example of small traditional tattoos, swallows – like anchors – are still highly popular today.

These small birds are famous for travelling long distances as part of their migration pattern, always ultimately returning home. As such, they represent a safe return home for a sailor.

Old school swallow tattoos are also marks of achievements for a sailor. Back when tattoos were first becoming popular, new sailors about to set out to sea would get a swallow design.

Later on, each swallow came to represent 5,000 miles sailed. In some circles, they indicated that the sailor has crossed the equator during his travels.

Certain placements for swallow tattoos have their own special significance.

A pair of swallows tattooed on the chest is supposed to carry the sailor’s soul to heaven if he drowns. Meanwhile, a swallow on the back of the hand indicates a good fist fighter.

Like all birds, swallows can also be symbols of freedom in tattoos of any style . Because they mate for life, they also represent one true love.

Heart tattoos

A sailor’s life involves long periods of time spent away from home. A heart tattoo is a reminder of loved ones.

Getting a heart tattoo – often with a name – is a way to take a loved one along for the journey.

Star tattoos

The distinctive nautical star is an important element of old style tattoos.

This symbol represents the North Star, used as the main reference point for maritime navigation. It’s also a reference to the rose of the compass – the lines indicating the cardinal directions of North, South, East, and West.

Therefore, it’s literally a guiding star. The tattoo is a good luck charm for a sailor, reflecting hopes of a safe return home and reminding them of what’s important.

For some sailors, nautical star tattoos represent certain achievements and experiences. For example, sailing a certain amount of miles may warrant a star tattoo, or surviving a particularly dangerous voyage.

Two nautical stars on the chest are the marks of a good fighter, and are a means of warning others not to mess with the sailor. Interestingly, this likely comes from the light signal that a ship displays to others as an order to yield and give way – starboard and port lights on.

Similarly, some accounts say that a red and green nautical stars on the chest of a sailor mean that he won a bar fight in a foreign port.

Shark tattoos

In traditional tattoos, sharks are symbolic of what the sailor has overcome and what he’s willing to do.

They represent strength of character and body, as well as the qualities of being fierce and unstoppable.

Shark tattoos were also protective charms. In case the sailor fell into the water, a shark tattoo would supposedly protect him from being eaten by a real shark.

Eagle tattoos

Eagles in old school tattoos usually represent America.

Sailor Jerry often used eagles in his designs, frequently in the company of the American flag. It is said that to him, the eagle represented an idealized version of America.

In general, eagles also symbolize freedom and courage. Because they fly so high up in the sky from the ground, they represent man’s connection to the divine.

An eagle killing a snake is also a common motif in old school tattoos. Unsurprisingly, this design usually represents war.

This can be a real conflict between two nations or physical entities, or it can mean a metaphorical clash. Sometimes, it stands for an inner conflict between two sides of one person’s character.

Eagles usually represent positive, admirable qualities, and serpents often get the rough end of the deal – symbolizing treachery and lies, among other things. For this reason, this design can represent the triumph of good over evil.

Interestingly, the Mexican coat of arms depicts an eagle devouring a rattlesnake. It has been inspired by a legend, according to which the Aztecs would build a new city in a spot where they saw an eagle eating a snake.

Snake tattoos

Snakes, as we’ve just seen, are often a negative symbol. Due largely to the unenviable role that the snake plays in the Bible, snakes are associated with lies and betrayal.

However, there have been plenty positive associations with snakes in different cultures over the centuries.

In old school tattoos, snakes tend to mean danger. Specifically, the danger the sailor can represent when crossed. They thus serve as protective symbols against evil and treachery.

In his snake tattoos, Sailor Jerry most often depicted cobras, usually mid-strike.

Pharaoh’s Horses

This classic design completely mystifies most people, as its meaning is not immediately clear.

In fact, the traditional tattoo of three horses heads – always arranged in the same pattern – is a reference to the Bible.

Specifically, to the Pharaoh’s Horses, which appear as Moses closes the Red Sea. Disregarding the storm and the volatile waters, the horses charge in attempted pursuit.

Although it’s technically a Bible reference, this tattoo design doesn’t necessarily reflect strong religious faith.

It’s generally accepted that the Pharaoh’s Horses design means fortitude, determination, and strength in the face of adversity. It also symbolizes the longing for freedom and the triumph of spirit.

You’ll notice that the horses are always shown in the same way in these tattoos. The particular composition of the design comes from a 19th century paining by John Fredrick Herring Sr.

Pig and chicken tattoos

This is an odd pairing that deserves an extended explanation.

Stories claim that during shipwrecks, if there was lifestock on board – such as farm animals – they were the most likely to survive.

This might seem counter-intuitive – after all, pigs don’t strike most people as the best swimmers. (Neither do chickens, for that matter.)

However, the point is that animals such as pigs and chickens were kept in wooden shipping crates. If the ship was destroyed, these crates would stay afloat – thus saving the animals while the sailors may have perished.

This is where this pair of tattoos comes from. Traditionally, the pig tattoo should be placed on the left foot, and the chicken (or rooster) on the right. Together, they would protect the sailor from drowning if the ship was destroyed.

Hawaii-themed traditional tattoos

If you’ve read the history of old school American tattoos above, the presence of Hawaiian themes probably won’t surprise you.

Sailor Jerry settled in Hawaii after leaving the Navy, and spent most of his life there, working as a tattoo artist. Hawaiian motifs were a part of his signature style, and they remained popular in the broader old school tradition.

For sailors and soldiers, a Hawaiian classic tattoo – often depicting a hula girl – could simply mean that they were stationed in Hawaii.

Pin up girl tattoos

Pin ups were incredibly popular during World War II, often used in official wartime propaganda. Their presence in classic tattoos is mostly just a reflection of the times.

For sailors, pin up tattoos could be a reminder of a specific woman back home, or they could simply be a permanent alternative (or addition!) to having a pin up poster.

Old-school tattoos are rooted in the American serviceman’s interpretation of traditions and symbols that go back thousands of years. Every tattoo or ‘Flash’ is a personal statement but there are certain common meanings. Here are a few of our favorite Tattoo Meanings.

LADY HEAD TATTOOS

Lady head tattoos are often associated with beauty, femininity, romance, desire, independence, or good luck. They can also represent a heroine, muse, or a lover. Lonely sailors at sea thousands of miles away from their homes would often get these women to remember the loved ones they had left behind. Many of the most popular lady head tattoos depict gypsy women of the European Romany culture, whose travel & nomadism were romanticized as a free way of life.

SWALLOW TATTOOS

In addition to indicating that a sailor had sailed 5000 miles, swallow tattoos are also associated with the idea of return. This "return" symbolism is rooted in two ideas. The first was the swallow's famous migration pattern, always returning home to San Juan Capistrano. Second, it was believed that if a sailor dies at sea, birds carry his soul home to heaven.

ANCHOR TATTOOS

At sea, the anchor is the most secure object in a sailor's life, making it the perfect representation of stability. This is why you'll often see anchor tattoos emblazoned with "Mom" or the name of a sailor's sweetheart (the people who keep them grounded). Anchors have become popular within general tattoo culture over the years, but the symbolism is still the same. It's a reminder of what keeps you steady.

SHARK TATTOOS

Sailor Jerry’s attitude toward sharks embodied those of many a sailor. You want to hate ’em, but you gotta love ’em. Sometimes animal tattoos are about taking on its traits. A lion shows you’re brave. A panther shows you’re tough. But a shark’s more about what you overcome. A shark on your arm says you’re willing to stand your ground. It says you’re not about to become someone else’s seafood.

DRAGON TATTOOS

Jerry deeply admired the work of Japanese tattoo masters and was the first Westerner to enter into regular correspondence with them. Yet he was also determined to beat them at their own game. Jerry's dragon tattoos , clearly Asian in nature, embody these conflicting attitudes. They’re more like exotic ghosts than living beings — like totems of an earlier, fascinating era.

SKULL TATTOOS

A tattoo is one of the few indelible decisions we make in life, representing a commitment to your dying day — this is one reason skulls and death themes are big. The other is that tattoos, in the ancient world and in Jerry's day, were often the marks of warriors, mercenaries and adventurers – people whose life choices represented coming to terms with death (“Death Or Dishonor”) or perversely inoculating one's self against it (“Rats Get Fat While Brave Men Die”).

HAWAII TATTOOS

After WWII, Jerry remained on his beloved Hawaiian Islands the rest of his life. He loved its beauty and exoticism and that it was as far away as he could get from a world he increasingly viewed as a screwed-up place, devoid of honor and conviction.   From his legendary hula girl to more scenic pieces, his Hawaii tattoos reflected his sense of the islands as a kind of paradise on earth.

MILITARY TATTOOS

Being in the service isn't just a job, it's an epic chapter of life. One where buddies can save your life and one decision can determine your fate.   This intensity breeds an appetite for ink, for tattoos that commemorate a fallen comrade, that link a man to his platoon, flight crew, or ship...and that declare a particular military credo, such as the marines “Semper Fi”.

SNAKE TATTOOS

Snake tattoos represent potency and power. Unlike panthers, which are usually depicted in mid-action, snakes are typically shown coiled and ready to strike, representing a don't-tread-on-me sensibility, thus warding off evil, misfortune and potential brawls. Sailor Jerry's favorite snake to ink was a King Cobra.

PANTHER TATTOOS

Panthers are usually inked as totems of prowess and virility, sometimes also symbolizing a connectedness to nature. Sailor Jerry's panther tattoos are particularly ferocious and masculine – drawn with red, often bloody claws, open jaws and occasionally in the company of a naked woman (who, for some reason, Jerry always made a redhead).  

LUCKY 13 TATTOOS

There's a long-standing tradition in tattoo culture of celebrating that which others fear (hence the thematic prevalence of things like skulls and knives). Sailor Jerry's Lucky 13 motif is probably the most famous set of tattoo designs that flip a bad luck symbol on its head. The series showcases Jerry's iconic design sense along with his sense of humor.  

EAGLE TATTOOS

Eagles are symbols for America, representing honor, prowess and intelligence. For Sailor Jerry, as a patriot who was acutely aware of (and vocal about) the shortcomings of his country, the Eagle was a symbol of his idealized America. A country that stands with the courage of its convictions and backs down for no one. Jerry's eagle tattoos are fierce and iconic, often depicted in association with the flag.

Pin-up Girl Tattoos

Pin-up girls represent the ideal and extremes of femininity — from maidenly perfection to vixen-ish temptation. The woman inked on a sailor's arm would be the only feminine form he would see for months. Applying his bold, refined style to the pin-up, Sailor Jerry created what could be argued as the world's most iconic pin-up tattoos .

Ship Tattoos

For a sailor, ships are both practical and metaphorical. It's where you go for work – but also for meaning and adventure. Sailor Jerry loved ships and held master papers on every major type of vessel. His legendary clipper ship tattoos represent both the call to adventure and the determination to be "Homeward Bound". And they're eminently seaworthy – Jerry always inked his riggings to be nautically accurate.

Heart Tattoos

A sailor staring down a long stint at sea- including the possibility of not returning home-often wanted a heart tattoo to keep his loved ones close. Sometimes these hearts were just images. Other times, they read "Mom" or featured the name of a special girl. Hearts still remain one of the most popular tattoos for both sailors and civilians.

Nautical Star Tattoos

Representing the North Star (historically used by sailors use for navigation) a nautical star tattoo was believed to keep a sailor on course. As such, they were also considered to help guide a sailor home.

Pig and Rooster Tattoos

The superstition behind this tattoo has to do with the wooden cages where roosters and pigs were kept in on ships. When ships wrecked, the lightweight wooden frames became personal flotation devices, giving them a surprising survival rate. A sailor hoping for good luck would get a rooster tattoo on top of the right foot and a pig tattoo on top of the left.

Shellback Turtle Tattoos

Like a ship at full mast, a shellback tattoo showed a sailor's experience at sea. Once a sailor crossed the equator, he earned the right to get a turtle inked on his body. The longer someone had spent at sea, the more tattoos they could show off.

What is the American Traditional Tattoo?

Also called Old School tattoos, the American Traditional is a style of tattoos that originated in the United States (hence the name).

When I think about this style, as an American, a few things come to mind: war heroes, military men, and those with extreme nationalistic pride, to name a few.

Though in the past this style may have been used exclusively for these groups of people, today, the American traditional style has surpassed its association with war.

It has even moved past belonging to only the United States as a tattoo style– this style has traveled around the world.

But what defines an American traditional tattoo style ?

This style may seem simple at first, but there’s a lot of work put in to make it look so saturated with color with such clean lines.

Simple in nature, these tattoos are only for a highly professional artist to perform because one mistake with the line surrounding an object, and the entire tattoo could be ruined.

This is not to scare you from getting an Old School tattoo, but to explain that just because they are known for being simple doesn’t mean they are easy.

The lines on these tattoos are bold and outline shapes in thick black ink– there’s no hiding the linework in this style.

Lines in an American traditional tattoo do not only serve to outline but form the entire shape of the tattoo inside and out.

Equally as important as the lines is the use of color in traditional tattoos.

Solid colors are incorporated into the image along with black and white, but as we’ve mentioned, when the colors are used they are always highly saturated.

That’s not all– there’s a specific color palette used in this tattoo style that dare not be altered.

Reds, yellows, and blues are used with minimal use of other colors.

This creates a unique tattoo that will most definitely stand out as being an Old School tattoo.

As for the designs covered by an Old School tattoo style, the sky’s the limit.

Although many early tattoos in the style were pin-up girls, anchors, flags, and eagles, there are no longer any boundaries to where an American traditional tattoo design can go.

They can represent anything from a horse to a geisha.

What’s unique about American traditional is not only its stylistic rules but its special history.

The History of the Old School Tattoo Style

The history of the United States of America is not a long one– and neither is the story of its tattoos.

However, the story of the American traditional tattoo style is an interesting one filled with war, circus performers, new inventions, and world-changing tattoo artists that not only affected the tattoo style but also the way tattoos are viewed in society.

Let’s take a closer look at just how fascinating and in-depth the story of the Old School tattoo style can be:

Early Old School Tattoo History

So how did the American traditional style start, anyway?

America’s unique way of tattooing started as early as the American Civil War and has come forward all the way to the present day.

This is according to Martin Hildebrant , who opened New York City’s first tattoo shop in 1846.

He is reported to have tattooed soldiers from both sides of the American revolution.

These soldiers were said to have received tattoos of loved ones, as well as getting tattoos for identification if they to be lost at the battle.

In the 1880s, traveling circuses were popular in America and the performers often had tattoos.

The interesting lifestyle of the artists and clients surrounding this environment had a potentially huge influence on the style of the traditional tattoo.

For most of the 19th century in the United States, tattoos were for those who were on the fringes of society, that is, maybe, until Captain Cook.

This British explorer and his gang are famous for popularizing tattoos with Westerners.

He and his crew showed off tattoos they received as tokens of long voyages across the world.

He was part of the reason why tattoos began to come out of the shadows.

In 1891, Samuel O’Reilly invented the electric tattoo machine, revolutionizing the industry and rocking it to its core.

This caused the tattoo business in the United States to grow very quickly, and artists from all over the states were searching frantically for new ideas to meet the influx of new customers.

This is said to have been how the original ideas built off of Hildebrant’s days were eventually spread across the country.

The World Wars Expand the American Tattoo World

It wasn’t until the next war, actually during both of the World Wars, that the Traditional look started to evolve into its unique style.

During WWI, instead of professional artists, soldiers themselves would tattoo patriotic symbols onto each other.

No matter how bad the stigma was at that time, it didn’t matter if they thought they could die any day.

In fact, it became more than just a doom and gloom endeavor.

The fact that they made up slang for getting tattoos while in the service such as getting ‘screwed, stewed, and tattooed’ means that getting tattoos actually became the cool thing to do.

Traditional tattoos at this time were especially popular with American sailors, who like Captain Cook, received tattoos along their voyages to remember the places that they visited.

Another very important reason these men got tattoos is that they wanted to be identified as Americans clear as day so that allies would know not to mess with them.

Fast forward in time, when WWI veterans showed up back to their homes with glaring pin-up tattoos and eagle tattoos , their moms may have been taken aback but their friends certainly were impressed.

This is due to the fact that there was a great rise in the popularity of American tattoos during the 1920s.

This isn’t to say all the sigma was gone and America was embracing the art of tattooing– but it’s safe to say that tattoo culture was slowly rising from the fringes.

When WWII started, every man and for that matter, everyone in the world, was inconceivably nervous.

This was especially true of men who were about to be shipped out to the war.

The solution to their troubles was bars, women, and tattoos.

Working out of Honolulu, this is where Sailor Jerry came into play.

This was a ‘first wave,’ of what we now think of as a New School tattoo style, which was brought on by artists Sailor Jerry (considered the ‘father of Old School’) and Bert Grimm.

These artists, among others, transformed the rambunctious yet fearful emotions of young military men by offering them priceless tattoos that could show them excitement in a world full of uncertainty.

For those who were lucky enough to survive the 1940’s, the decade saw many American men leave home without any tattoos and come home with tattoos representing their rank in the military, as well as of pin-up girls, the U.S. flag, and eagles.

These tattoos showed the veterans’ masculinity and patriotism and were done in the only way they knew how– the Traditional way.

Therefore, this time, even more veterans showed up back home after the war with tattoos in the American traditional style.

One Small Step Back and One Huge Step Forward

The 1950s proved a step backward in American tattoo history.

In this highly conservative decade in United States history, the sense of rebellion that came with tattoos was felt but not acted on nearly as often.

It wasn’t until the 1970s in the United States that tattoo stigma started to explode into obliteration.

The punk rock scene and many different counter-cultural movements pushed tattoos into the mainstream more than ever before in the country.

By this time, tattoo culture was moving rapidly and new styles had already been developed.

However, Traditional style tattoos were very common.

Old School Tattoos in the 21st Century and Beyond

As far as stigma goes in the United States today, in 2005 it was estimated that 40% of Americans had at least one tattoo.

And seeing that the American traditional is one of the more popular styles in it country of origin, that’s a lot of people who have Traditional body art!

Today, Neo-traditional tattoos (which I think should be called ‘new school’, but that’s just me) are highly popular because they take the Old School ideas and add new techniques– they bend the old rules a bit.

American traditional tattoos are not just popular today with military men or people who are patriotic– anyone including non-Americans can use the style to show just about any design, as long as it is simple enough to fit the constraints enough for it to be a Traditional tattoo.

Why is the American Traditional Tattoo Style Important?

The Traditional art of tattooing is an essential part of United States History.

Too often, this part of its history is not told and it is somewhat difficult to find a lot of information out about it.

This is why it is so important to share this history.

The stigmas against tattoos in the United States may not be as prevalent as they were decades ago, however, the country is certainly not at the point where its tattoo history is common knowledge.

Another reason why this style’s history is important is that it informs the current Traditional style.

Learning about how the style has evolved over the course of over a century of history allows us to better understand the style.

This may allow artists aspiring to use the style in their work to do a better job.

Last, it’s important for anyone receiving an American traditional tattoo to be knowledgeable about its history.

No one wants to get a tattoo and know nothing about its roots (certainly no one who would reach the end of this page).

If you are going to wear it forever, at least know the basic concepts behind its meaning and where it came from in tattoo history.

At it’s genesis, tattoos were commonly limited to circus performers, sailors, or other military personnel. More often than not, the tattoo designs held a deeper meaning. This is especially true for sailors. Their tattoos frequently served as reminders of home and loved ones, to mark milestones in the service, and so much more.

For 16-year-old Amara Francis, April 19 is a day that she has filed away in her mind as one that moved her deeply.

It was the day she met Charles Shay, a decorated World War II and Korean War veteran who hails from the Penobscot Nation tribe like she does, at a restaurant in Normandy, France.

In June 1944, Shay was a 19-year-old U.S. Army combat medic. He is credited with saving the lives of soldiers during the storming of the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Now he is 99.

A dinner with Shay was part of a World War II-themed trip to Europe that Francis and 37 of her peers from Old Town High School took last month. It was the first international trip of what Christina Turner hopes will be many more for students at Regional School Unit 34.

Turner, who has taught social studies at the school for the past seven years, began planning the trip in September 2022. She got the green light from the school board later that year.

If the board’s support continues, she hopes to travel with students to a different location every two years. Turner imagines trips to Rome, Greece and the Galapagos Islands because they are relevant to their lessons at school and get them “out of the classroom and into the real world,” she said.

During their April break, students visited museums and famous sites in London, Normandy and Paris, but dining with Shay was arguably the most unforgettable part. June 6 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, known as the largest seaborne invasion  in military history.

In a recent interview  with the Associated Press, Shay reflected on the landings in Normandy that led to the liberation of France and Europe from Nazi Germany occupation, including the moment his friend died in his arms.

“I guess I was prepared to give my life if I had to. Fortunately, I did not have to,” he told the news agency.

Francis, who is a junior, was moved to tears when she saw the bronze bust of Shay  at the Charles Shay Indian Memorial at Omaha Beach. The park also features a turtle sculpture made by Shay’s nephew, Tim Shay. The turtle, a sacred animal in the Penobscot tradition, points toward Indian Island, where Francis grew up hearing stories about Shay’s heroism and role as a tribal elder.

Francis recalled experiencing many “hard emotions” as she walked the beaches of Normandy. For her, the day was about reflecting on the historic events that once unfolded there and how Shay saved wounded soldiers from drowning in the sea.

His actions earned him a Silver Star. He also earned France’s Legion of Honor in 2007.

“There were tribes that sent people away not knowing whether they would return,” Francis said. “People were out there fighting for a country that didn’t recognize them yet, but they were willing to do whatever it took to clear that beach.”

Shay mostly stayed quiet during the dinner with students, but Marie-Pascale Legrand, a French woman who has helped care for him since he moved from Maine to Bretteville-l’Orgueilleuse, a French town in the Normandy region, told his story. She also wrote a book about his life, “Spirits are guiding,” which will be released this month, the AP reported.

Shay was taken prisoner by German forces in March 1945 and liberated a few weeks later. After the war, he reenlisted in the military, and he landed in North Korea in 1950. He received several honors for his work as a medic during World War II and the Korean War.

It’s one thing to hear about Shay’s heroic actions, but to shake his hand and thank him was surreal, senior Wyatt Vickers said. He also got Shay’s signature.

Vickers felt it was evident, just by the way Shay carried himself, that he had lived through so much history, the student said. “I have so much respect for that man,” Vickers added.

Seeing thousands of “white crosses and stars of David grave sites as far as the eye can see” at the Normandy American Cemetery also touched the 18-year-old.

“The energy there was really powerful. It was hard to grasp,” he said.

Students visited Winston Churchill’s underground war rooms, the Royal Air Force Museum, the Eiffel Tower and Napoleon’s tomb, among other sites, during their trip. Turner believes that by exposing students to new places, cultures and foods, they will have a greater appreciation for the world, including its history, she said.

When it came time to part ways with Shay, students filed into a line without prompting from chaperones, knelt down to look him in the eyes and shook his hand. It was a proud moment for an educator who works with a population that some see as self-involved but have shown how thoughtful they can be, Turner said.

“I think they all felt, like I did, that this was a gift,” she said. “I could live to be his age and never, ever forget it.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Porn performer Stormy Daniels took the witness stand Tuesday in the hush money case against former President Trump, who looked on as she detailed their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she got to keep it quiet.

Prosecutors allege Trump paid Daniels to keep quiet about the allegations as he ran for president in 2016. Her testimony aired them very publicly as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee seeks to win the White House again.

Trump denies having sex with Daniels , and his lawyers unsuccessfully pushed for a mistrial midway through her testimony.

It was a major spectacle in the first criminal trial of a former American president, now in its third week of testimony in Manhattan.

Meeting Trump

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner, she said. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff.” He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

Payments for silence

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential, and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter, and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission . She said she learned that Cohen wanted to buy her silence.

Mistrial push

Midway through her testimony, Trump’s lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels’ testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter’s details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered that Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

Cross-examination

Trump’s lawyers tried to attack Daniels’ credibility, suggesting she was motivated by money and that her account has shifted over the years.

“Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” defense lawyer Susan Necheles asked Daniels at one point. Daniels acknowledged she did.

“And you want him to go to jail?” the lawyer asked.

“I want him to be held accountable,” Daniels said. Pressed again whether that meant going to jail, she said: “If he’s convicted.”

The defense pressed Daniels on the fact that she owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees stemming from an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit, and on a 2022 tweet in which she said she “will go to jail before I pay a penny.” Daniels dug in at times in the face of pointed questions, forcefully denying the idea that she had tried to extort money from Trump.

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared. He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

On the way out of the courthouse, Trump called it “a very revealing day.” He didn’t address Daniels’ testimony explicitly but claimed the prosecutors’ case was “totally falling apart.”

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels’ testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, President Biden was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism .

The Friday Night Fever skate tour organised by Pari Roller & Mobilités is one of the largest meet-ups of its kind in the world. The weekly, 13-mile urban skate, established during the late-1990s craze for inline skating, regularly attracts upwards of 800 participants. It’s fast-paced fun — and I’m determined to stay upright, come cracks or cobblestones.

I can feel the texture of Paris vibrating up through my shins as I gather pace alongside a middle-aged woman. She’s twinkling in portable fairy lights, French pop seeping from a speaker tied to her backpack. Clearly this isn’t her first rodeo. Pro skaters swoop between junctions and down underpasses, snaking backwards and slaloming around lampposts. Setting a steadier pace, groups of friends laugh and chat, and several sets of parents are in the mix with off-road prams. Marshalls in high-vis jackets whizz up and down to block traffic, offer a steady arm and shout safety instructions, occasionally blowing a whistle. Passersby stop and stare.

Periodically, the procession pauses, allowing stragglers to catch up. These moments give me time to soak up my surroundings: I watch a glittering bateau mouche glide along the Seine as we congregate on the Pont Royal; marvel at the lit-up art nouveau marvel of the Galeries Lafayette; and enjoy being part of a wild, fleeting spectacle amid the pavement cafes west of Pigalle.

A gruelling incline sees me and a few other first-timers fall to the back, where a merry gang of cyclists, e-scooters and longboarders brings up the rear. In the blink of an eye, the carnival disappears over the hill. The skaters have outrun me this time, but there’ll be other nights to earn my stripes.

1.3 million Michiganders to travel for Memorial Day, according to AAA

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - AAA reports that approximately 1.3 million people from Michigan are expected to travel during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

About 1.1 million people will take a family road trip, traveling 50 miles or more to reach their holiday destination.

AAA expects nearly 44 million people to travel nationally for the holiday.

It is the second-highest Memorial Day holiday travel forecast since AAA began tracking 24 years ago.

Mac McClung 's vert may be just a smidge less next dunk contest ... 'cause the high-flying hooper just got his whole arm tatted in NYC!

TMZ Sports has learned the 25-year-old guard hit up tattoo artist Michelle Santana out in SoHo after peeping some of her work on social media.

We're told McClung wanted an arm sleeve with sentimental meaning ... so the two got together at Bang Bang Tattoo and created a showpiece.

The sleeve on his right arm features a lot of intricate work ... there's the ocean, a butterfly, birds, and a kid reading a book under a tree which Santana says represents McClung keeping his inner child's hopes and dreams alive.

The piece also features a mountain ... which we're told signifies where McClung came from in Virginia.

Mac also repped his high school, Gate City, in Scott County, VA.

"He had the design, everything very clear in his head so he decided where each element would be placed in which area of his arm," Santana said.

The arm tattoo took just two sessions. Santana -- who's worked on Ella Mai , Becky G , and Kelsea Ballerini -- told us they plan to add more to the pieces.

If Mac -- who played college ball at Georgetown and Texas Tech -- doesn't share pics before, the work will be front and center on the court when McClung hoops this upcoming season, whether it's in the NBA or G-League.

Of course, McClung's known for his insane hops and dunking ability ... winning his 2nd Slam Dunk Contest during NBA All-Star weekend in February.

Mac's just one win away from tying record-holder Nate Robinson .

Hobby Airport runway back in service after lightning hits it, officials say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- According to the Houston Airport System, a Hobby Airport runway returned to service on Monday evening after a lightning strike forced its closure.

A post to Hobby's social media channels stated that runway 13R was closed for repairs due to the strike.

Jim Szczesniak, Houston Airport System director, explained in an interview on ABC13's Live at Five that the strike was on an intersection of the runway, calling it the worst spot for a lightning hit.

Based on the airport's social media posts, the repairs began at about 4:30 p.m. Officials announced the reopening at about 7 p.m.

Before the closure, flights were already at a standstill at Hobby and Bush airports due to the weather, with ground stops ordered.

At one point during the closure, Hobby Airport's flight status site showed multiple departures scheduled at 4:55 p.m. and later pushed back by more than three hours. There were also a handful of cancellations.

The airport system asks passengers to contact their airlines for flight status information.
