Getting into Argentina was a little complicated because our dogs flew in cargo. We had to go to a different building to pick them up. It took almost 3 hours to get everything done. Once we got settled, we found Buenos Aires to be a great place for dogs. It seems like everyone loves dogs in BA. People were constantly coming over to say hi. There are lots of parks and green space around. They aren’t official dog parks and don’t have fences, but people regularly take the dogs off leash to play. Dogs in Argentina are pretty well trained. It’s also a common site to see dog walkers with at least 10 dogs all walking together at the same time. When we had to get a rabies shot, we used a mobile vet that comes to your apartment. That made everything really simple.

I’m in Bariloche, only tried taxis with my dog. Only advice I have is to carry a little blanket/towel, or offer to put your jacket on the seat so your dog can sit on that. That usually unlocks it here for me… if there’s something between my dog and the car seat, drivers are happy to drive us. I can’t go long distance on busses with my dog though. They aren’t allowed, so If I want to take him with me, I’ll have to hire a private driver.

Entry Requirements for pets from Non-high Rabies Country into Argentina

Medical requirements : .

To enter Argentina dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies. The directions don’t indicate if they require a 1 or 3 year formula.

For a primary vaccine, you can travel 21 days after it has been given.

Puppies and kittens younger than 3 months don’t need the rabies vaccine, but they will need a signature from the government vets saying no cases of urban rabies have been reported in the last 90 days.

If you are coming from a Rabies Free country (WHO), the government vet will indicate this on the health certificate (CVI) and the pet doesn’t need a rabies vaccine. However, Argentina is not rabies free, so you will have to get one upon arrival.

Your dog or cat will need treatment against internal and external (fleas and ticks) parasites within 15 days of the health certificate (CVI)

Documentation Required and how to get it :

You will need to get an  International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) issued, signed, and stamped by the Veterinary Authority of the country you are coming from.  (Pet Passports from EU may be used if signed by official government agency)

The paperwork can be bilingual, but it needs to include Spanish

The signed CVI is valid for 60 days , so that should be plenty of time to get the paperwork back to you.

Your pet will be inspected after you fly into Buenos Aires. There is a customs fee for the inspection.

If you want to travel to Tierra del Fuego by land within Argentina, you will need to meet additional requirements and get a certificate from SENSA

Finding pet-friendly places is simple because in Argentina, furry friends occupy a special place.

How to travel with pets in Argentina

In Argentina, traveling with pets is an increasingly accessible and enjoyable experience thanks to the diversity of pet-friendly transportation options available. From land transportation services such as buses, metro, and trains that allow the entry of companion animals under appropriate conditions, to airlines that offer flights specially designed for traveling with pets.

Requirements for traveling to Argentina with dogs or cats

To bring pets to Argentina, it is essential to comply with the requirements established by the National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa). This involves obtaining an International Veterinary Certificate (IVC) or an official passport that complies with the required health regulations.

The IVC must be issued by the veterinary authority of the animal's country of origin and must be written at least in Spanish. If you choose to use an official passport instead of the IVC, it must be valid and contain detailed information about the animal's health, including rabies vaccination, antiparasitic treatment, and a recent health examination. Additionally, this passport must be validated by an official veterinarian authorized by the issuing country's health authority.

It is important to note that passports that do not have the corresponding validation by the official health authority will not be accepted for entry into Argentina.

The necessary health requirements for the IVC or passport are detailed in Resolution GMC 17/15, which establishes the conditions that documents must meet to guarantee the health and safety of pets and prevent the spread of diseases. The requirements are as follows:

Health Certificate: The document must be issued by a certified veterinarian in the country of origin, within a maximum period of ten (10) days before the date of issuance of the International Veterinary Certificate (IVC). This certificate must confirm that the animal is in good health, without signs of parasitosis, and is in optimal conditions to be transported.

Rabies vaccination: dogs and cats must be protected against rabies through vaccines approved by the veterinary authority of the country of origin/provenance, with immunity valid within the established validity period by the vaccine manufacturer..

In the case of animals receiving the vaccine for the first time, it must be administered at least twenty-one (21) days before their entry into Argentina.

For puppies under 3 (three) months old, it is required that the veterinary authority certifies their age and that they have not been in areas where urban rabies has been detected in the last ninety (90) days before their trip.

If the country or region of origin of the animal meets the standards established by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) to be considered free of rabies, the animal can enter without the corresponding vaccination. However, the veterinary authority issuing the International Veterinary Certificate (IVC) or passport must indicate this condition of being a rabies-free country or region. The original rabies vaccination documentation must not be retained and must remain in the possession of the owner or person responsible for the animal.

3- Parasite Control

Animals must receive treatment against internal and external parasites within fifteen (15) days prior to the issuance of the International Veterinary Certificate (IVC) or the intervention of the passport. This treatment must be carried out with veterinary products authorized by the veterinary authority of the country of origin/provenance.

It is recommended to search the official website of the service or veterinary authority of the country of origin/provenance to learn how and where to manage the IVC or passport validation.

Everything About Traveling to Argentina With Pets

Traveling to Argentina with pets can be kind of complicated, as each country has its own legislation. If you plan to travel with cats or dogs to Argentina or, more specifically, Buenos Aires, take a look at these useful general tips, the documentation you’re going to need, and how to fly with a cat or dog in Argentina.

Before we begin, you should know that it’s way easier to travel to Argentina with house pets like dogs or cats, that are allowed to board the plane, instead of being in a dark, cold plane cabin, though some international associations think it best for the dog or cat to be in the cabin, as it can be safer. According to Argentina’s regulations (and, specifically, the regulations and restrictions that apply to the City of Buenos Aires), your pet “must have been vaccinated against rabies between 30 days and 12 months before arrival. An accredited vet from your home country must also complete the Certificado Veterinario de la Argentina (Argentine Veterinary Certificate) and include a copy of the rabies vaccine certificate.” If you have any other pet or animal (i.e., for sale or commercial purposes), you should look into your own country’s current legislation.

Because we’re guessing importing pets most likely won’t be your case, we’ll only provide general information for traveling with pets like dogs or cats (leave those anacondas at home!), and specific information on regulations from the US and the UK–yes, we know many of you are flying from these locations.

There are some general regulations in place that must be complied with, and these come from the International Air Transport Association (IATA)–you can check those rules in detail here . There is an exception whereby your dog cannot fly with you internationally. You should also know what to do when flying to a country where rabies is a high-risk disease:

“Effective December 1, 2021, dogs vaccinated in the United States by a US-licensed veterinarian may re-enter the United States from a high-risk country without a CDC Dog Import Permit if the dog:

• has a valid US-issued rabies vaccination certificate;
• has proof of a microchip;
• is at least 6 months old;
• is healthy upon arrival; and
• arrives at an approved port of entry”

I n all other cases, you need to take into account the following features, tips and rules for traveling to Argentina with a pet :

• When do you want your pet to travel? This is important to take into account because each country has its own regulations, as we’ve said, and you need to plan at least 30 days in advance when traveling with a pet to make proper acommodations
• What is your pet’s size and weight?
• What are the specific container requirements for your pet’s size and weight? To solve this issue steadfastly, there are worldwide standards for containers. The generally acceptable rule is that “each animal in the container must have enough space to turn about normally while standing, to stand, to sit erect, and to lie in a natural position.” Some of the recommended materials (apart from their having a proper ventilation system in place) are fiberglass, metal, rigid plastic, solid wood or plywood. Other important standardizations:

– The floor must be solid and leak-proof

– There must be handles included on the top or on the sides of the cont

– You must include “Live Animals” and a “This way up” labels

– The door should take up one whole wall or part of the container

NOTE : If you’re flying with Aerolíneas Argentinas in particular, the maximum size allowed for the crate is 44 centimeters deep, 17 centimeters tall and 30 centimeters wide. Also, having a flight reservation does not necessarily mean your pet will be able to get on the flight. There is a two-pet-per-person maximum.

General Tips About traveling with Pets

Lar’s worldwide standards for traveling with pets.

LAR stands for Live Animal Regulation. LAR’s website provides all the information you’ll need regarding pet transportation. These are the key things you should know about traveling with a pet to Argentina according to LAR–including some tips and tricks!

It’s not advisable to sedate your dog or cat; it is not forbidden, but there can be adverse effects and so it’s best not to. If your pet loses its ability to move inside the bag or crate, it might injure itself. Also, it’s a good idea to contact the airport about 48 hours before your flight to reconfirm you’re traveling with your pet to Argentina.

You should also reduce your pet’s food intake a day before, and feed your cat or dog a meal about two hours before, as it reduces stress. Before boarding, take your dog or cat for a walk, and also before leaving the airport.

Documentation Needed to Travel By Plane With a Dog or Cat in Argentina

What is the CIV (International Vaccination Certificate) for flying to Argentina and why is it so important for pet travel? The SENASA is an independent agency of the Argentine government who is not only in charge of overviewing and surveilling these kinds of procedures, but also authorizes which pets, and animals overall, get to fly and which ones do not.

For your pet’s transportation to be approved by SENASA, you’ll need to show the CIV 30 days prior to your departure date, and make sure that during that time your pet doesn’t show any symptoms of diseases of any kind. Do not take this requirement lightly: if your pet exhibits symptoms, it will have to quarantine. Keep in mind the CIV can be replaced with a valid veterinary passport.

You must contact SENASA beforehand to ensure they are ready to expedite your pet’s official authorization for entry into Argentina. Nonetheless, SENASA staff are available 24 hours a day; alternatively, you can phone (+54) 9 11 4480 – 0582 if you’re calling from another destination other than Argentina (if not, dial without any area codes).

So, this can be confusing: your pet has to have gotten a general veterinary exam 10 days before the trip (and no less than that), but the certificate itself–showing no signs of disease, as we’ve said. But the actual proof of vaccination against rabies is different. Your pet has to get the vax against rabies 30 days before the trip–except if it’s less than three months old, in which case this doesn’t apply. And so the order you should do things in has to be: first, have your pet get the shot; then, get the general exam.

Proof of Vaccination and Certificates for Dogs and Cats

What kind of information does the CIV provide?

• Name and identification: breed, sex, date of birth, fur, size and particular signs.
• Owner’s name and ID
• The actual CIV
• The sanitary certificate

The sanitary certificate comes with a small fee; but traveling with your pet itself in Argentina or elsewhere can cost you a pretty penny, which anyway varies from one airline to another (though we haven’t included actual costs, because of the changing rates and inflation in Argentina).

Traveling with Pets to and from Argentine Provinces

For traveling with pets within the Argentine jurisdictions, what you’re essentially going to need is the CIV (International Vaccination Certificate) and proof of the anti-rabies vaccine ( vacuna antirrábica in Spanish.) According to the Argentine government website : “Also, you must travel through Argentine territory with by any other documentation issued by SENASA personnel involved in the entry of the international traveler to Argentina.”

If you’re traveling to Tierra del Fuego specifically , you’ll need the CVA (Certificado de Vacunación Austral), which is valid for thirty days straight. You’ll even need to show up with printed documents, apart from other information (like deparasitation). View all the requirements on the official website .

Coming to Argentina with a Pet From the US, UK or EU to Argentina

There is a general rule, which is that whatever documentation you provide has to be translated and certified legally (an original document + a certified copy) and apostilled by a sworn translator. For instance , for the UK “it is suggested to legalise all the UK documentation to be submitted in Argentina, with the  Apostille at the British Legalisation Office, Foreign & Commonwealth Office  and translate them into Spanish.”

If you’re coming from the EU-Switzerland or EU-Norway, you don’t need to request a solicitud de ingreso temporal (request for temporary entry into Argentina)–some of those rules are detailed here, at the top of the page –if your pet has a valid EU (Swiss or Norwegian) animal passport.

• Rabies vaccine certificate Date of rabies vaccination must be at least 30 and 360 days at most before date of departure. This requisite is only required for any cat/dog over 3 months of age.
• Owner’s name and address
• Animal’s data: breed, sex, birth date, size, color and particular signs.

Health Certificate In order to apply for the Import Permit, we need you to send via fax a Health Certificate, signed by a veterinarian and also stamped by the official Sanitary Authority in the country of origin. This health certificate must be dated not more than 10 days before planned arrival.

Health certificate must include the following text:

• Name & Address of owner. Breed, sex, birth date, color, size and special signs of the animal.
• Country of origin, country of destination and countries of transit, where applicable.
• Statement certifying that “there has been no cases reported of African Horse Sickness and/or Rift Valley Fever diseases for the last three years in the area of residence of the animal and in an area of 50 kilometers within it.”
• Statement certifying that “the animal has not been during that period of time in any area or region where those diseases were present”.
• Statement certifying that “the animal has been examined within 10 days prior to departure, not showing any signs of clinical disease”.

Language You can have it done in English and we will translate it into Spanish in Argentina.

Rabies Vaccine Certificate You should send via fax with the Health Certificate the Rabies Vaccination Certificate. It is not a difficult paperwork, but you need to be very careful to include all the text needed. If any part of it is missing, we will not be able to process the Import Permit. Also, as important as that, is that the health certificate you issue MUST have the official stamp and signature of the Department of Agriculture of the country of origin.

Thank you and everyone else who was involved in Tina’s safe trip from Buenos Aires to Anchorage, Alaska. You were very helpful and your team was always professional and responsive. I felt comfortable knowing that you were watching out for Tina. During her very long trip, I was very worried about her, especially during her overnight stay in Houston. One United service representative provided me a number for the Houston kennel and I was able to speak to one of the people who was scheduled to walk her and receive an update. My very dear friends, Ray and Dyanne Brown, are thinking of traveling from Buenos Aires to Anchorage with their older dog. I have copied them with this email so they know how to contact you for information.

Buenos Aires to Munich, Germany (Jackie)

  I used Las Lunas to transport my three year old Cocker Spaniel, Charlie, from Buenos Aires to New Jersey, USA. As most pet owners can relate to, this was an incredibly stressful time and I was really anxious about him making the trip. From the beginning LATAM Pet Transport was responsive and organized; proving helpful information and answering the multitude of questions that I had. After they picked him up to take him to the airport they sent me photos and videos during every stage in the process until he was turned over about two hours before the flight to the airline personnel. I feel like they people with LATAM Pet Transport really care about the animals and are sensitive to the stresses that owners face during such times. I would definitely recommend this company. Want to travel with your pet?

• If you wish to bring a cat or dog into Argentina, it must have been vaccinated against rabies between 30 days and 12 months before arrival. An accredited vet from your home country must also complete the Certificado Veterinario de la Argentina (Argentine Veterinary Certificate) and include a copy of the rabies vaccine certificate.
• In the instance that animal is being imported for commercial purposes, these certificates must also be presented to the Argentine Consulate in your country of residence for legalisation (personal pets do not require this approval).
• Airlines must inform the Argentine airport authorities about the animal's arrival at least 24 hours in advance in order to guarantee the attendance of a vet when the animal arrives.
• Other pets (birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammels such as rodents and rabbits) do not need anti-rabies certificates, but must meet other requirements and must have a health certificate.

Traveling to Argentina with your pet

If you intend to move to Argentina with your pet, you will have to follow certain procedures and make sure that your pet meets the requirements of the Argentine authorities. Prior to travelling, check the relevant conditions with SENASA, the organisation responsible for issuing health certificates for animal importation in Argentina.

To be allowed in the country, your pet must have obtained a sanitary certificate from the relevant authorities in your home country, which proves that it has been examined by a licensed vet no more than ten days before your date of departure and that it has no symptoms of any disease. This certificate, which must either be written or translated in Spanish, states the name and address of the owner and the animal's data, such as breed, sex, date of birth, and height.

Dogs and cats

Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies no more than one year prior to the intended date of travel, and at least 30 days for those who are vaccinated for the first time. Note that the three-year vaccine is not recognised here. If you are able to demonstrate this rabies certificate upon arrival, no quarantine will be imposed, however, your pet could be prohibited from travelling if it has symptoms of rabies or any other disease and does not meet the necessary requirements. In this instance, further examination may be carried out at your expense. When departing from your home country, and upon arrival in Argentina , you must have your pet's health record ready, which has to prove the absence of parasites and infections, as well as diseases. The pet will then be inspected by the SENASA Veterinary Service. It is also recommended that you microchip it, just in case it gets lost, though this is not actually a requirement. If your pet does not have a registered micro chip, ensure that it has a tag with your name and telephone number on it instead. If you are entering the country by air, you will need to notify veterinary officials so they can inspect your pet. The airline should also notify the station manager at the point of entry up to 24 hours before arrival so that a qualified official can check the paperwork. If you have a small dog or cat, some airlines will allow it to be taken into the cabin with you, while others will insist that it is transported in the luggage hold. Be aware that some airlines refuse to transport animals altogether. It's wise to check with the airline as far in advance as possible so that you are able to make alternative arrangements if need be. It could be that you are required to use one of the airline's pet carriers, which will incur a small fee, and tax is payable on arrival, though the amount depends on the animal and time of your arrival. Contact the airline or the Argentinian embassy in your home country for more detailed information about this.

Other animals

If you are planning to import other types of pets such as birds, reptiles, amphibians or rodents, you will have to check the SENASA conditions. These animals will not need to be vaccinated against rabies, but they must have a health certificate and any other relevant documents. We hope you found this article useful!
