  • Divurumpola: Divurumpola is situated 15kms from Seetha Eliya on Nuwara-Eliya – Welimada Road. Divurumpola is said to be the location where Sita underwent the famous fire ordeal Agni Pariksha, in order to prove her chastity. From the flames arose the fire god Agni who was invoked by Sita. He lifted her from the flames unharmed and presented her to Lord Rama who explained this test was only necessary to prove the truth of her purity and innocence to everybody. Divurumpola is said to have been the location of this episode because the Sinhalese name means a ‘marketplace of oath’. Today the temple is respected as a suitable place for oaths that can be helpful in settling disputes between parties.
  • Ravana Waterfalls: It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country. This waterfall measures approximately 25m (82 ft) in high and cascade from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals. But this is not the case in the dry season, where the flow of water reduces dramatically.
  • The falls have been named after the legendary character Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, it is said that Ravana (who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave. At the time, the cave was surrounded by thick forests in the midst of the wilderness. It is also believed that Rama’s queen bathed in a pool that accumulated the water falling from this waterfall.

  • Kataragama Temple: This is the temple of Lord Karthikeya Subramaniam at Kataragama. Lord Karthikeya was requested to go to the battlefield by Lord Indra on the last day of the war. The benefit was one of the most powerful weapon – Brahma asthra aimed at Lord Rama for the second time was rendered useless by the presence of Lord Karthikeya.

It is also a nature reserve and is located in the southern turtle breeding zones. Ussangoda is a patch of high ground by the sea and spreads over a significant area. But unlike the rest of the land surrounding, it is only covered with grasses and a few small pockets of pigmy forests. The summit of the Ussangoda area pans like a plateau for a significant length.
  • According to Ramayana, after meeting Seetha Devi Lord Hanuman decided to test the strength of the mighty King Ravana and his army of Rakshasas. In the event that unfolded Lord Hanuman’s tail was set on fire by the Rakshasas, who in turn went on to torch some parts of King Ravana’s empire. Ussangoda is one of the torched areas, which is said to have been an airport used by King Ravana.

At these times, Lord Hanuman had been instructed to fetch the life-saving herbs from the jungles of Himalaya to bring them back to life. Mighty Hanuman had gone to the Himalayan hills and lifted the whole hill and brought it back, as he was unable to identify the life-saving herbs by himself. Parts of the hill is said to have fallen in five places in Sri Lanka, namely, Rumasala in Galle, Dolukanda near Heripitiya, Ritigala near Habarana, Thalladi in Mannar and Kachchativu in the north.
  • Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple: Hanuman is often called Anjaneyar by Tamils, as his mother’s name is Anjan. This kovil is the first Anjaneyar Temple in Sri Lanka and the only one on the island dedicated to Lord Hanuman in his Panchamuga form, this means with five faces. And it is said to be the only temple in the world to have a chariot for Anjaneyar. Its chariot festival is held annually end of December or beginning of January, it is one of the most popular processions in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. Visitors are advised to wash hands and feet before entering the temple and not to cross hands inside the temple.
  • Kelaniya Temple: After King Ravana’s death, Vibeeshana was coroneted as King of Lanka by Lakshmana at Kelaniya. There are murals enshrined outside the Buddhist temple depicting the crowning of Vibeeshana. The Kelani River is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana and Vibeeshana palace was said to be on the banks of this river. The reason Lakshmana crowned Vibeeshana, was Kelaniya because Rama had to return to India as he had to continue his self-exile of 14 years to honour the commitment to his father, King Dasarath of Ajodhya.
  • Vibeeshana is considered one of the four guardian deities of Sri Lanka, and temples for Vibeeshana are found throughout Sri Lanka. A painting of Kind Vibeeshana adorns the new Parliament of Sri Lanka. In fact, there are no temples dedicated to Ravana, but many exist for Vibeeshana; this goes to prove that his stand towards dharma & justice made people revere him as a god in Sri Lanka. King Vibeeshana was considered a fair king, as he supported Rama against his own brother’s injustice. Many devotees that visit king Vibeeshana’s shrine pray to him asking his intervention to a fair recourse to their problems.

Sri Lanka Ramayna Tour Package from Chennai

Sri Lanka has significant mythological significance in several religious and cultural traditions. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama, with the help of Hanuman and his monkey army, built a bridge known as Rama Setu or Adam's Bridge from the southern tip of India to the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. It is believed that Rama used this bridge to cross to Lanka. Sri Lanka has an important place in Buddhist mythology and history also, Buddhist writings state that Buddha himself visited the island during his lifetime. Buddha's footprint is thought to be on Adam's Peak (Sri Pada). Sri Lanka's mythological significance is deep, stretching back to Hindu, Buddhist and indigenous traditions. Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum

A detailed itinerary with starting time every day and return drop timing at hotel along with time taken to visit the spots with distance to be covered on foot will be useful for senior citizens.

Dear Sir, our team shall send you the details on your email ID.

Srilanka Ramayana Yatra associates itself with Sundara kanda of Ramayana. After seeing Srilanka, many missing links of Ramayana can be known. The difficulties faced by Lord Hanuman while searching Mother Sita in Ravana’s Srilanka can be picturised only after completing this Yatra.

I applaud Tirtha Yatra for conducting this tour so well, taking us to beautiful places fully green, good roads, beautiful Asoka Vatika, especially Asoka vriksha with beautiful flowers grown only in this part of Srilanka.

All should undertake this Yatra to get over the hurdles in their lives as darshan of Sankat Mochan Hanuman located Mother Sita and unites Her with Lord Sri Ram.

We’re happy that no sooner Yatra was completed. Thanks to Tirtha Yatra team for making Sri Lanka Ramayana Yatra so memorable.

Thank you for the testimonial. We are eager to serve you on our future yatras.

We had a very good group which made the journey more divine and blissful. All hotels were very nice and the bus was comfortable.

I was part of the recently concluded Sri Lanka Ramayana Yatra from 1 November to 8 November 2019. I place on record my sincere appreciation for Team Tirtha Yatra for their sincere efforts to make the trip comfortable to yathris, especially senior citizens. True to the caption of the tour, the one organised could cover many places related to Sundara Kanda and Yudha Kanta. Coverage of these places certainly enhanced our faith in the Epic. As a bonus, we could cover many other historical places relating to Bhudha, Shiva and Karthigeya too. The accommodations arranged were, as is usual with Tirtha Yatra, excellent. Best of Satvik food was generally provided in an alien land which is not Satvik in general. The consistent greenery outside did go to lower the stress and strain of long bus travels day after day. On the whole a satisfying tour. Thanks.

It’s a Yatra for all ages. We have read various books on the epic Ramayana but to co-relate what we have read with the events that have truly unfolded, we have to visit the places. Its truly an amazing experience and I can boldly tell others that the incidents explained in the books have really happened with due evidences. The sites and places visited are truly awesome and exhilarating too as they are situated in scenic beauty spots along the beautiful beaches, lush green forests, flowing rivers and meadows on the hills. Thank You Tirtha Yatra for providing an opportunity to explore such lovely places in Sri Lanka which not only enhanced my spiritual experience but also made me to offer my obeisance to mother nature/earth. A Yatra I yearn to undertake once again in the near future.

After the visits to these two temples, you will then proceed to Kandy , visiting the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage (on your request) en route.

You will spend the night in Kandy.

Day 3 Kandy to – Nuwara Eliya

The following morning, you will be driven to Nuwara Eliya for a one night stay. En route, you will visit the Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda – about 1 hr 30 mins drive from Kandy. This Hanuman deity temple was built by the Chinmaya mission of Sri Lanka and special Pooja’s are conducted here every full moon day, which is witnessed by thousands of devotees. Thereafter, you will then refresh and freshen up at the hotel in Nuwara Eliya and in the evening visit the Gayathri Peedam.  Hindu’s believe this is where Lord Shiva blessed King Ravana’s son with supernatural powers.

You will spend the night at a hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 4 – Nuwara Eliya to Bandarawela

On day 4 of this popular Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour, you can visit the Seetha Amman Temple, which is located close to Nuwara Eliya. Alongside a stream (in which Sitadevi is said to have bathed) a temple is erected for Lord Rama, Sitadevi, Lukhmana and Hanuman.

You will spend the night in Bandarawela to end up 4th day of your Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour.

Day 5 – Bandarawela to Tissamaharama

The next day, after an enjoyable breakfast, you will be driven to Ella (about 40 minutes’ drive) to visit the Ravana Falls and the Ravana Cave.

Ravana Falls is a breathtaking sight – 1080 feet high and cascading into several mini falls. Near these Falls, several caves had formed, in which King Ravana is believed to have lived. When you enter the Ravana Cave tunnels, the architectural brilliance of King Ravana can be seen very clearly. These tunnels were a secret passage and also a means of transport through the hills.

After t h e visit to the caves, you will be driven directly to Tissamaharama and on your request, we will arrange a breath-taking wild safari tour of the Yala National Park.

If you are not interested in going on a safari tour, you have the luxury of enjoying the evening in a very relaxed atmosphere.

Day 6 – Tissamaharama to Negambo

After breakfast the next morning, you will be driven to Kataragama to visit the Kataragama shrine – dedicated to God Skanda (the God of Love and War). In July every year, a 10-day festival takes place here with a grand procession in which devotees’ exhibit talents such as hanging from hooks and other similar performances.

Thereafter, you will be driven to Ussangoda, situated on the Colombo – Kataragama road near Ambalantota – Nonagama Junction in Hambantota District. Here you will be able to view a burnt down area of King Ravana’s empire and as well as an airport also believed to be used by Him.

After the visit here, you will be driven to Galle , which is a 3-and-a-half-hour drive. In Galle you will visit  Rumasela – which is where parts of the herbs from the Himalayan hills, brought by Lord Hanuman, are said to have fallen.

The next place scheduled for you to visit is the Seenigama Temple in Hikkaduwa, which is where King of the Monkeys is said to have begun the onslaught on forces of King Ravana.

The last stop on Day 6 of the Ramayana trip in Sri Lanka is the Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple in Colombo – the only temple in the world that has a chariot of Anjaneyar.

At the conclusion of this visit, you will be driven to your hotel in Negambo, where you will spend the night.

ramayana tours from chennai

Kachchativu or Kachchatheevu is an island located about 15 miles North-East of Rameshwaran and approximately 14 miles South-West of Delft Islands within the territorial waters of Sri Lanka. There are no permanent inhabitants or any permanent structures on the Island other than a Roman Catholic Church which are currently administered by the bishop of Jaffna. As historical evidence show Kachchativu Island has been under the jurisdiction of Sri Lanka since the time of the Portuguese, Dutch and later the British rulers of Sri Lanka. (then Ceylon).

Dispute on the ownership of Kachchatheevu Island Sri Lanka

Government of Sri Lanka had always maintained a consistent policy based on historical facts on the issue of the ownership of Kachchativu. The issue of deciding Indian and Sri Lankan claims to Kachachativu was closely connected with determining the boundary line between India and Sri Lanka in the waters of Palk Bay. Government of India and Sri Lanka reached a settlement on the boundary by considering the historical evidence and the famous Non Align Movement (NAM) principle of Peaceful Coexistence. The issue has been concluded under the agreements signed by the government of India and Sri Lanka in 1974 and 1976.

According to Ramayana Yatra in Lanka Pura

Ramayana facts states that there are five sanjeevani drops in Sri Lanka. According to Hinduism Sanjeevani is a magical herb which has strong power to cure serious illnesses. It was believed that medicines prepared from this herb could revive situations where death is almost certain. Sanjeevani described in Ramayana, the great Indian epic as a as a magical herb or plant.

Kachchatheevu Sanjeevani drop Sri Lanka

It is believed that, both Lord Rama and Lakshmana were injured severely by very powerful arrows and fell unconscious. So Lord Hanuman was instructed to fetch the lifesaving herbs from Himalaya in order to make them back to life. So Hanuman went to the hills, lifted the part of the hill and brought it to Sri Lanka as he was unable to identify the lifesaving herbs alone. While he was carrying the hill, it is believed that some Parts from the hill fell down at five places in Sri Lanka including Kachchatheevu Island Sri Lanka and other 4 Sanjeevani drops are namely, Rumassala in Galle, DoluKanda in Hiripitiya, Ritigala on the Habarana Anuradhapura road, Thalladi in Mannar.

Significance of Lord Rama and Ramayana Express

Significance of Ramayan Train

Lord Ram holds a special significance in Hindu mythology, with Lord Ram being one of the most worshipped gods in Hindu religion. The mythology states that when Lord Ram was sent on an exile along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, he traveled all across India before finally reaching Lanka (current Sri Lanka) to rescue his wife from the evil Ravana.

Many temples have been constructed across the country, marking the presence of Lord Rama during his journey. IRCTC, in order to cater to the needs of devotees of Lord Ram, launched Shri Ramayana Express that will cover most of the important destinations associated with Lord Rama. The tour facilitates religious tourism in the country and it’s a very good effort under the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ initiative to give a vast knowledge of religion and culture to Indian as well as international devotees.

Ayodhya, the ancient city, is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram and setting of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Lord Rama was born in this city and many temples were built in the city to worship Lord Ram, who was known as a man of honor. The ancient city was the capital of the Kosala Kingdom and is one of the seven most important Hindu pilgrimage destinations in India.

It is believed that the birthplace of Lord Ram was marked by a temple and was known as Ram Janambhoomi which was demolished by Mughal Emperor Babur. He erupted in a mosque on the site. The city is located just 8km from the city of Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh and is situated on the banks of the river Saryu.

Just 14km away from the holy city of Ayodhya lies the town Nandigram where Bharat, Lord Ram’s brother, lived while Lord Ram was in exile. Bharat wasn’t present in the kingdom when Lord Rama was exiled and when Bharat returned, he was informed that he is the new king of Kosala kingdom. Greatly hurt by the news, Bharat travelled to Chitrakut to convince Lord Ram to return to the kingdom and rule.

Despite Bharat’s multiple requests, Lord Ram refused to return to the kingdom. Then Bharat asked Lord Ram to give him his wooden sandals and told that he would worship Lord Ram’s sandals and rule the kingdom on his behalf but he wouldn’t live the luxury of the king. It was in Nandigram that the Bharat lived for the next 14 years and worshipped the sandals of Lord Ram. Upon Lord Ram’s return from exile, Bharat welcomed him to the kingdom where Lord Ram was crowned as king. There is a temple in Nandigram which reflects the devotion of Bharat and his love for Lord Ram.

A beautiful city in Nepal, close to the Indian border, Janakpur is believed to be the birthplace of Sita and the place where Sita got married to Lord Ram. Janakpur was the capital city of King Janak’s kingdom. The city is famous for the Janaki temple which is believed to be more than 500 years old and is a major Hindu pilgrimage destination. The city is a perfect example of the blend of Indian and Nepalese culture. The city was the capital of the Mithila Kingdom. The city exhibits ancient artistic traditions associated with Mother Sita and Lord Ram and plenty such spots can be observed throughout the city.

Nepal is a Hindu country and their devotion to Sita can be easily observed in numerous paintings and wall murals depicting the grand marriage of Sita with Lord Ram. Every street in the city has one or two temples dedicated to Hindu gods and the ancient land of gods now serves as a museum for Hindu devotion. Janaki temple is the largest temple dedicated to Sita and one of the most important Hindu temples after Ayodhya. There are also various important Hindu temples like Mahadev temple and Dulha temple which serve as major tourist attraction spots in the city.

One of the oldest cities in India and an important Hindu pilgrimage destination in the country, Varanasi is also one of the major tourist attractions in India. Also known as Kashi, the city is sacred to Jains and Hindus. The oldest settlement, Kashi can be traced back to the 11th century. In Hindu religion, it is believed that the city of Varanasi is the road to salvation and many people take refuge in the city in their dying days to seek salvation once they die.

An abode of Hindu God Shiva, Varanasi’s beauty and divinity is further amplified by the presence of River Ganges. A sacred river, Ganges is believed to have the power to wash off all human sins. The famous temple of Kashi Vishwanath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the major tourist attractions in Varanasi. The temple is made of gold and is one of the holiest temples in India. Other major attractions are Sankat Mochan temple which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Tulsi Manas temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Ram, Sita and Laxman.

Prayagraj (Allahabad)

One of the most sacred and ancient cities in India, Prayagraj is the city of steeped mythology, culture, history and religion. Prayagraj is famous for its confluence of three holy rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. In the epic Ramayana, the city of Prayagraj is mentioned as the town where Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman spent some days before proceeding to Chitrakoot.

In the epic, the town is mentioned to have just a few huts for rishi huts at the confluence of the rivers. The town is one of the four sites of the famous Kumbh Mela. Organized once every 12 years, Kumbh Mela is the record holder of the largest religious gathering. The confluence of rivers also known as Sangam is believed to be a sacred site and dipping into the Sangam can wash off all human sins. Lord Rama stayed in Prayag on the request of Sage Bharadwaj.

A picturesque tourist destination in Uttar Pradesh, Shringverpur is believed to be the town where Lord along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman crossed the River Ganga while on his way to exile. A relatively quaint village has gained popularity as the time passes with its mention in details in the epic Ramayana.

The town is mentioned as the Kingdom of Nishadraj and the excavation of the town unearthed the remains of a temple dedicated to Shringi Rishi. It is believed that Lord Rama took shelter in the city for a night after the request of King Nishadraj before leaving for jungles. The famous tourist spots in Shringverpur are the Ram Chaura, Shanta Devi temple and Shringi Rishi Samadhi.

A village of religious importance, Chitrakoot is situated on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, sharing the area with both the states. It is the same town where Bharat, the brother of Lord Ram, followed Lord Ram and tried persuading Lord Ram into returning back to the kingdom. Lord Ram also got to know about his father’s death in the same town and he performed King Dashrath’s last rites in presence of all the goddesses and gods.

During his exile, Lord Ram moved to Panchvati in Dandaka Forests from Chitrakoot. Today the Panchvati is identified as a region in Nasik. Situated on the banks of river Godavari, Nasik is a pilgrimage destination with numerous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Ram.

Nasik is also home to the world’s only Lakshman temple and a cave named after Sita, where Lord Ram, Lakshman and Sita are believed to have prayed to Lord Shiva. Near the cave lies the Lakshman Rekha, where Ravana abducted Sita. The name Panchvati traces its origin from the presence of 5 banyan trees when Lord Ram arrived. Even the name of the town Nashik is derived from the site where Lakshman cut the nose of Surpanakha.

Hampi is a major tourist attraction in South India. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Hampi exhibits numerous Hindu temples. The capital of the Vijayanagar Empire, Hampi was a town of glory in its prime. The city of Hampi holds special mention in the epic Ramayana. Believed to be the town where Lord Ram and Lakshman met Lord Hanuman while in his search for his wife Sita. Many of the places mentioned in the epics can be found here in Hampi. Hampi is known for its grand style of architecture dating back to the Vijayanagar Empire.

Hampi is believed to be the mythical kingdom of monkeys. The Anjaneya Hills across the river is believed to be the holy site where Anjana gave birth to Lord Hanuman. The place where Hanuman first met Lord Ram is known as Rishimukh Island and is considered to be a holy place in Hindu religion. Sugreeva’s cave can be spotted on the banks of the river while approaching Vittala temple. Hampi is home to many such tales of mythology.

A town in the state of Tamil Nadu, Rameshwaram is located on the Pamban Island, separated by the Pamban Channel from mainland India. It is 50 km from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. Rameshwaram is the terminus of the Shri Ramayan Express Tour, the Sri Lanka tour starts by taking a flight from Chennai to Sri Lanka. Together with Kashi, Rameshwaram is considered to be the holiest place in Hindu religion and it is also part of the holy Char Dham Yatra. In Ramayana, it is said that Lord Ram and his army arrived at the shores of Rameshwaram seeing a route across the sea to reach the kingdom of Ravana, Lanka. Hanuman was the first to discover this place and it is believed that he, being the son of the wind god, had taken a giant leap across the sea to Lanka.

Rameshwaram is the place where Lord Ram decided to build a sea bridge across the sea. It is also the place where Ravan’s brother Vibhishan abandoned his brother to join Lord Ram’s army. The Shiva Lingam in the temple Ramanathaswamy is believed to be one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas.
