The Best Tips for Red Eye Tour Bus Trips

As the bus moved closer and closer to the city, the buildings began to grow larger, and so did the butterflies in my stomach. For the first time ever, I was going to New York City! However, I had already been up for 24 hours by the time the bus pulled over on the street in city. You see, my sister and I (and about 50 other people) had taken a red eye bus tour to New York City! We had just ridden about 9+ hours from Virginia to New York. The lack of sleep didn’t matter anymore though. Once I felt the energy of the city, it kept me going all day long.

red eye tour to new york

I ended up having an amazing trip to New York City and it’s one that I will never forget! ( You can read all about my experience here . ) However, there are some things you need to know when taking a red eye bus trip to New York City. Now that I’ve experienced a trip of that sort for myself, I want to share the items I used and tips that I learned during my trip. So, if you decide to take a trip like this yourself, you’ll also have an amazing and memorable time, if you follow these tips .

So, let’s get to it!

Before the trip even starts, you need to know what to bring with you. Now, a red eye bus trip means that you’ll be riding on the tour bus overnight. You’ll want to bring items that make the ride comfortable for optimal sleeping or at least resting.

Items to Bring for the Bus Ride

I am so glad I brought a pair of earbuds on the bus with me! These earbuds from Apple are what I brought along with me, but any, I’m sure, will work fine.

red eye tour to new york

I was able to listen to music and not disturb anyone else. It was also helpful to drown out the noise of people talking, moving around, or snoring. The earbuds were especially helpful in drowning out the noise of the squeaky window right next to my seat.

Travel Pillow

I wanted a pillow that fit snug around my neck. It needed to be firm and hold its shape but soft at the same time.  This travel pillow  is what I ultimately purchased and it helped me get a bit rest on the bus ride!  This pillow ended up being a great purchase for the long bus ride.

Comfy Clothes

I knew I’d want to wear some comfy clothes during the ride to New York City. My “Friends” Sweatshirt is so comfy and it’s what I decided to wear during the bus ride!  This one  is very similar to my sweatshirt.

I also wore black yoga pants during the bus ride. Mine are super soft and comfy and my favorite yoga pants ever! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find them online, but here are some great yoga pant choices to choose from .

Extra Clothing

While comfy clothes are ideal for the tour bus ride to New York City, I also recommend packing a change of clothes to wear while actually walking around New York City. I changed into stretchy, black jeans , a sweater, and a warm jacket while in the city.

Drinks and Snacks

I carried a small water bottle with me while on the bus and in the city. Mine is similar to  these . The size is great for easily carrying in a small pack all day.

I also brought snacks with me, which I recommend if you get hungry on the bus or want to snack while in the city. I packed small, individually wrapped snacks so they wouldn’t get smashed as easily and they were easy to toss into my backpack.

Small Backpack

I brought a  Small, black Vera Bradley Backpack  to hold my belongings in. I stored my water bottle and snacks inside.

red eye tour to new york

Although I got absolutely no sleep on the bus ride, these items did help me to rest a little during the ride and make it slightly easier.

Remember, this is only a one-day trip . Try not to bring so much that someone else has no room for their things on the bus. Most tour buses however, will let you utilize the storage compartment under the bus to store your items as well.

Tips to Consider During Bus Ride Stops

During the red eye bus tour that I took, we made a few stops at truck stops and at a restaurant. Consider these tips if your red eye bus trip does the same.

  • I highly recommend getting off the bus at each stop or at least standing up for a few minutes when the bus makes a stop. It can get so cramped on those tour buses and I found that it helped my body to move a bit during the long ride.
  • During one of the last stops the bus makes before entering New York City, go change into the extra clothes you packed for when you’ll actually be in the city. It’s so much easier to change in a bathroom stall than to try to do it in the bus restroom or even at your seat on the bus! Plus, it’s good to change clothes at some point, otherwise you’ll be in the same clothes for over 36 hours.
  • Also, put on or fix your makeup while at one of the stops. Take this time to also fix your hair, if needed. Again, it’s so much easier to do this off the bus. Just make it quick so not everyone is waiting on you.

red eye tour to new york

Once the red eye bus tour ride is almost over and you’re approaching New York City, you’ll want to make sure you have the items you’ll be carrying with you ready. When the bus stops along the street in the city, you’ll have to empty the bus as quickly as possible. The city doesn’t want tour buses blocking traffic. It’s best to just be ready to exit the tour bus as soon as it stops .

Here’s a list of some of the items I brought with me (in my backpack) while walking around New York City for the day:

  • I carried the  Small, black Vera Bradley Backpack  I mentioned earlier. It ended up working out great for a day pack in NYC! The size of the backpack was perfect for carrying on my back all day long. It was big enough to hold the I love New York t-shirt and the mug souvenirs I purchased but not so big that it was too bulky to move through the crowded streets.
  • I packed the small water bottle I mentioned above. It was great to have access to water throughout the day.

red eye tour to new york

  • These are the Duck Boots I wore  and honestly, even after walking 11+ miles, my feet didn’t hurt too bad in them! However, wear shoes that are comfortable for you.

red eye tour to new york

  • This is the beanie  I wore all day long. It kept my head warm and was cute at the same time! I don’t think I took it off all day!

red eye tour to new york

  • I wanted a little protection as well so  I carried pepper spray  too. Thankfully, I didn’t have to use it.
  • I also put my bank and credit cards in an RFID blocking wallet similar to this . It protects your card information from getting stolen . I also had my money and cards in separate places so if something happened to the money or cards in one spot, I still had money hidden somewhere else. Again, nothing happened to our cash or cards. We just wanted to be safe.

red eye tour to new york

  • This portable phone charger was a lifesaver!  I have an older iPhone and I had to charge it about four times while in New York City. I got a good three charges out of it before having to use my sister’s charger. Do not forget this item if you will be using your phone a lot during your trip!

red eye tour to new york

These items really helped make my day in New York City enjoyable. I wasn’t stressed about my phone’s battery, finding something to drink, being cold, or staying safe. I was able to have the best time and enjoy the city!

red eye tour to new york

While in New York City, I also learned some helpful tips that I think may also help others, especially if you are touring areas near Times Square.

A Few Last Tips When Touring New York City

  • Don’t shop a lot unless you don’t mind carrying bags all day
  • It can be hard to find a restroom while in New York City. There’s one at the Old Navy in Times Square! Go to the back of the second floor and they’ll let you in.
  • There are also benches and large windows in that Old Navy so you can rest and people watch at the same time. We did this a few times!
  • Rest when you need to. If you find a place to sit for a few minutes, sit! You’re going to be doing a lot of walking in one day.
  • There’s a light show on the building at Sak’s Fifth Avenue at night during the holiday season. Don’t miss it! They play the light show about every 15 to 20 minutes, so you have multiple chances to see it during the evening/night.
  • Be smart and keep up with your money while in the city.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask a local for help. The New Yorkers we came into contact with, were friendly!

red eye tour to new york

Alright! I believe that is all the items and tips I can think of that will be helpful when taking a red eye tour bus trip to New York City.

I hope that these tips will help to make your red eye bus tour amazing! And if nothing else, I hope this has sparked your interest in travel and in the city of New York. It’s an amazing city full of great energy, chaos, culture, and fun. If it’s not on your bucket list, it should be!

Where did you get your coat. Love it!

Thank you! I actually found it secondhand and unfortunately, I’m not even sure what the label says. I do know it’s a puffer style jacket so here’s a link to some affordable options for that style of coat 🙂 https://rstyle.me/+ukWqzCiLpfrgsH2kQFO3jg

Your Guide to Great Red-Eye Flights

red eye tour to new york

  • Airports and Flying
  • News and Tips
  • Travel Tips

Red-eye flights are an interesting topic.

Some frequent flyers swear by red-eyes. They posit that overnight flights help them wake up at their destination feeling refreshed and ready to go.

Others avoid red-eye flights at all costs. Maybe they struggle to sleep on planes or have had bad experiences with red-eyes in the past. (After all, what’s worse than sitting in a plane in a half-state of dazed sleeplessness… for hours and hours on end?)

In reality, red-eyes can be a great solution for preventing jet lag and saving time while crossing time zones.

Assuming you know the basics, that is.

If you’re a little hesitant to take red-eyes or simply want to improve your red-eye routine, read the tips and tricks below. They’re taken from experienced flyers, airline staff, and travel experts.

First, let’s debunk the myths surrounding whether red-eye flights are risky for travelers.

Debunking the myth: are red-eye flights bad for you?

Maybe you’ve heard the myth that red-eyes are bad for you.

This notion is based on the idea that red-eye flights can interrupt our sleep schedules and add to the negative cumulative effects of air travel.

That’s not a far-off idea. Here’s the short of it: Our circadian rhythm gets thrown off when we switch time zones.

The disruption to our circadian rhythm negatively impacts our ability to sleep, eat, and even digest, causing issues like jet lag and constipation . Those two factors can have a serious impact on our trip’s outlook.

So, red-eyes can be bad for you assuming you don’t sleep on them. But assuming you do, red-eye flights are beneficial, increasing the time you spend asleep while being ferried around the world.

Traveling east vs. west: which is best for red-eye flights?

Let’s bust another myth related to red-eye flights.

Some people believe that red-eye flights are designed for eastward travel. So, if you’re jumping on a red-eye in Los Angeles, you’ll wake up in the ‘morning’ ready to land in New York City.

You’ve essentially slept through the night and woken up at your destination. The same is true for red-eye flights that take passengers from the East Coast over to Europe, too.

Is it absolutely necessary to fly east on a red-eye? No.

But it doesn’t usually work better for our circadian rhythms—so if you’re a little nervous about taking a red-eye, I suggest trying your first flight on an eastward route.

Tips for great red-eye flights

Before the flight.

  • Book a flight that’s closest to your bedtime. As you’ll see with the advice below, you’re more likely to sleep if you can pretend you’re on your regular sleep routine.
  • Pay extra beforehand to select a seat that works great for you. Most red-eye fans prefer window seats. Some also avoid aisles close to the bathroom and emergency exits to avoid added noise and light.
  • Bring your cozy gear. Whether it’s a special neck pillow or a pair of amazing compression socks, make sure that you’re setting yourself up for the most comfortable trip possible . Some of the most important things to have with you are an eye mask and ear plugs (or noise-canceling headphones).

On the flight

  • Avoid booze, caffeine, and unhealthy foods . To set yourself up for a great night of sleep, you need a settled tummy. Sticking to water and simple, healthy(ish) foods is a great way to avoid gut discomfort while on board.
  • Try to start sleeping as soon as possible. Most flyers recommend not watching a movie or scrolling on your phone to avoid blue light exposure. Instead, consider setting up a podcast or another relaxing form of listening entertainment.
  • Follow your usual routine. That might include brushing your teeth and even washing your face in the plane bathroom. Some travelers even recommend using the same products on the plane, as the scents of familiar lotions and soaps help them maintain their sleep routine.

12 Helpful Tips for Taking a Red-Eye Flight

plane in sky

There are quite a few benefits to hopping on the red-eye. Mainly, it maximizes your time at home and abroad. You can still get in a full day’s work on one side of the ocean and arrive with the whole day before you on the other.

The trouble is, how do you get a decent night’s sleep sitting upright in a tight chair with someone elbowing you or disturbing your sleep for a bathroom break? Here are a few tips and tricks to see you through the worst of it.

Start Adjusting to Your New Time Zone

bed and night table

See if you can start adjusting to your new time zone a week ahead of your flight. This may be difficult if you’re traveling somewhere that’s five or six hours ahead.

But, even the smallest adjustments may help. If you play your cards right, what would be a red-eye may just end up feeling like an early morning flight.

Consider Taking Lavender Softgels

lavender field

There are a number of healthy brands on the market that have formulated lavender essential oil softgels to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. The thing is, it takes a week or two for your body to adjust to them and reap their benefits.

Speak to your doctor to see if you can add lavender essential oil into your daily routine. If so, start taking them at night when you’re getting ready for bed. You may find that you have better sleep with fewer disruptions.

Skip the Alcohol

glass of brandy

We know by now that overindulging in alcohol may help us fall asleep early. It’s also gracious enough to provide us with disrupted sleep and a groggy feeling upon awakening.

A groggy feeling is the very opposite of what you want when you wake up on a crowded plane. Aside from this, flying is already dehydrating. Adding alcohol to the mix won’t do a thing to make you feel ready to take on the world.

Skip the In-Flight Meal

in-n-out

If you can manage it, skip the in-flight meal. Try to eat at the airport, if you have enough time, or wait until you land. Once we eat, our body needs a little time to digest. Like the glass or two of wine, this will only prevent us from getting any sort of meaningful sleep.

Choose Your Seat Wisely

airplane seats

If you’re on a red-eye, it’s likely a longer flight. How will you handle the bathroom situation? Will you sit by the window and risk having to wake a sleeping passenger? Or will you sit in an aisle seat and be the one who has to get up and down for your fellow passengers?

Sitting in an aisle seat has its advantages because you can get up and down as you please. However, you also run the risk of an errant elbow bump from passersby. Also, you might not want to sit near the bathrooms because all the traffic might prevent you from falling – and staying – asleep.

Invest In a Quality Sleep Mask

woman sleeping

There are countless sleep masks on the market today. What you want to look for is one with sleep cups – a sort of raised enclosure around your eyes. First, it won’t irritate you, having the feeling that something is pressed right up against your face.

Second, it tends to block the light better. Like cooling pillows, you can even find cooling eye masks to help you bring on the relaxation. A good example of that is the Manta Cool Sleep Mask .

Pack a Light Blanket

blanket and tea

Every space counts when it comes to your carry-on. But, the small creature comfort of a light throw blanket from home may help you fall asleep easier. Tuck yourself under one when you feel like everyone’s settling down and see what you can do to lull yourself to sleep.

Speaking of which, are you curious to know if you can pack for an entire week in a carry-on? Here are all the best tips and tricks to help you achieve that goal.

Purchase Noise-Canceling Headphones

wireless earbuds

We all love our Apple Airpods. But, the original generation isn’t exactly noise-canceling. Beats Studio Buds tend to provide a superior experience.

Put on your favorite audiobook or podcast when you’re ready to relax. With your sleep mask and light blanket, you just may score a few solid hours of sleep.

Invest In a Quality Neck Pillow

Like everything else in life, the neck pillow market has evolved pretty rapidly. There are brands like trtl and BCOZZY that sell innovative pillows that support your neck in an upright position, preventing you from waking up with an awful crick. If you have the time, you may try a few different brands out to see which one works for your sleep style.

Dress Comfortably

red pants

Even if you’re landing in Paris and want to look tres chic, maybe don’t wear those super tight skinny jeans that are going to pinch you at the waist. See if you can find a stylish pair of Palazzo or linen pants, depending on the season.

You’ll also want to give yourself the ability to layer, perhaps with a tank top underneath a long-sleeved shirt. Pack a sweater in your carry-on. This will give you the opportunity to get your body temperature to the optimal level when you’re trying to fall asleep.

Pack Refreshing Toiletries

face mist

When you wake up and see you only have an hour or so to go, pull out a pre-packed bag of refreshing toiletries. Anything with mint or citrus might feel good. The simple act of using a face wipe, spritzing some toner, and reapplying some lip balm can do wonders.

Pack a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste to freshen up when you make your bathroom run. These small, simple, everyday acts will help you wake up before the final refreshment service comes around and you can reward yourself with a cup of coffee.

Pack Energizing Snacks

After you’ve washed your face and brushed your teeth, you might want to indulge in an energy bar, some trail mix, or other energy-boosting snacks. You’ll be glad you have the liberty to just reach down and enjoy a small snack without having to wait for the flight crew to come through.

You Got This!

Wherever you’re headed next, it’s likely we have a destination guide to help you make the most of each and every day. Here’s hoping you sleep comfortably and disembark, ready to take on the world.

Trump’s momentum and the dems’ struggles are paving the way for a red wave in ny.

Former US president Donald Trump holds at a campaign rally at Nassau Coliseum in Hempstead, Long Island.

We are less than 50 days from Election Day and with thousands of New Yorkers packing out Nassau Coliseum on Long Island on Wednesday to see Donald Trump speak, all eyes are on New York.

Why New York?

Weak, corrupt, incompetent and inept leaders have passed law after law that have made life less safe and affordable.

New York continues to lead the nation in out-migration because pro-criminal, high-tax and sanctuary policies have forced countless New Yorkers to seek refuge in other states.

Many have reached their breaking point but have found hope in the New Yorker running at the top of the ticket.

President Trump’s roots are in New York.

He grew up in Queens, and as a businessman has helped build this state that is our home.

From the Wollman Rink, to construction that pierces high into the New York City skyline, many feel strongly that this November, New York should be Trump country.

Siena College polling at this time in 2022 said I was down 17 points in my race for governor, but we ended up getting just under 50% of the vote, flipping control of the House of Representatives in the process.

President Trump is undoubtedly polling better in New York than I was at this time last cycle.

He cut Joe Biden’s lead to mid-single digits before the Democratic Party enacted their coup to oust the sitting president and leader of their party.

But make no mistake, New York is a battleground state.

Our race for governor earned the most votes for a statewide Republican candidate in over 52 years, and with that came five suburban House districts and a Republican majority.

The red wave that failed to materialize nationally took over New York, and it resulted in a Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and gavels being passed on from the hands of Jerry Nadler, Adam Schiff, Maxine Waters and Nancy Pelosi.

We now have great freshmen incumbents running extremely competitive reelection bids that Democrats have poured millions of dollars into.

President Trump showing up to campaign in New York will have great down-ballot impacts for someone like Anthony D’Esposito (NY-04), who represents the district where Nassau Coliseum is located.

President Trump now holds a lead in New York’s 4th Congressional District; a district that previously voted Obama-Obama-Clinton-Biden.

Dems are slumping

Trump’s support will also help challengers like Mike LiPetri, running on Long Island’s North Shore, and Trump’s message will be heard across the Hudson Valley, where Alison Esposito is running against a freshman Democratic incumbent in a district Alison and I won by 3 points in 2022.

A lot has changed in New York since then, and it’s been quite damaging politically for the Democrats running for more power.

Eric Adams’ popularity numbers are worse.

Kathy Hochul’s numbers continue to tank as well, as she continues to compete for the title of worst governor in America.

We have an opportunity to shock the world in 2024, prove that we are a battleground state that will rise again and save the country while we are at it.

Hochul elevated an alleged agent of the Chinese Communist Party to be her Deputy Chief of Staff, and every New Yorker sees right through her congestion pricing “pause.”

Letitia James and Alvin Bragg, who are leading the charge to imprison Trump and bankrupt his family, aren’t making the political situation any better for the left.

The migrant crisis , which was not a top 3 issue two years ago is now a number one issue for many New Yorkers.

Law-abiding residents in underserved communities have been voicing outrage as the city and state put thousand-bed migrant housing facilities on soccer fields, provide shelter in some of our finest luxury hotels, and even hand out prepaid debit cards to criminal illegal aliens.

New Yorkers know which Presidential candidate will secure our border, enact the largest deportation operation in American history, make our streets safe, restore our quality of education, and make life more affordable.

It is Donald J. Trump – the same guy who the Left is trying to assassinate, bankrupt, and imprison for the rest of his life.

Lee Zeldin represented Suffolk County in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2023 and ran for New York governor in 2022.
