Whether it seems like it or not, every college or university has students who are looking for active ways to participate in university life as well as the surrounding community. It can be challenging, however, for businesses, organizations, and even  university event planners  to come up with creative college event ideas that actually work.

The following college event ideas are designed to appeal to students, help connect them with one another,  improve their experience  at events, introduce them to local businesses and organizations, and much more.

1. host local tours to familiarize students with their surroundings..

Walking tours, bus tours, and even bike tours are fun opportunities for students ” particularly freshmen and other campus newcomers ” to make friends and get to know the area around them. Highlight popular attractions, restaurants, recreation areas, and local monuments. Invite parents to join during orientation or visitor weekends and include senior students in the tour staff. This will help current students earn some extra income, and they will be able to share personal anecdotes about the area in addition to credible tips from the eyes of a student.

2. Take students on nature tours.

Students who enjoy the outdoors, botany, or conservation will appreciate horticulture tours that showcase the unique biology of their college town. Tour local gardens, pinpoint hiking opportunities, and point out the local flora and fauna. Connect with the agriculture department to teach tour attendees about endangered species in the area and local environmental conservation organizations they can work with.

3. Host “crawls” and provide students with transportation.

We’ve all heard of bar crawls, right? A group gets on a bus and hops around town visiting local bars and indulging. Well, not all crawls have to be alcohol-related!

Partner with local transportation services to host  museum event  crawls, garden crawls, or market crawls. Students love food, so play with the idea of a taco or burger crawl. Highlight unique eats in the neighborhood, helping new students find their favorite restaurants while supporting local businesses as well.

4. Create scavenger hunts that involve the campus and community.

There are so many different ways to engage students through local scavenger hunts . An interactive challenge that gets them moving and holds their attention will help students learn about the history of their campus, the unique architecture in town, local businesses, and uncover interesting facts about the city.

When planning your scavenger hunt, include a task that requires participants to ask five strangers to name their favorite thing about the school. Include a find the hidden talent challenge that encourages competitors to build bonds with other students by unlocking their unique skills. The opportunities are endless!

5. Connect students to local charities and volunteer opportunities.

Host a community service fair to link students up with local non-profit organizations, activist groups, and charities. Teach students about the importance of public service, civic duty, and empower them to take an active role in their community.  Drive fundraising with charity events  and encourage students to organize their own campus services.

6. Recruit popular speakers or host TED Talks.

Invite philosophers, activists, lecturers, writers, entrepreneurs, and other exciting speakers to visit campus and share their life advice. Survey students to connect with them and discover what they care about most.

Host  TED Talks  regularly on campus and encourage  audience engagement at events . Promote events on social media. Provide potential attendees with a biography of the speaker, their accomplishments, and the unique perspective they bring to the table.

7. Host recurring events that connect students with alumni.

Regularly invite former students back to meet and speak with current students. Highlight alumni who have excelled in their field of study or made notable contributions in their degree field. Include former students who are using their degrees in unique or interesting ways as well. Invite artists, activists, and entrepreneurs. Help current students see the potential that the future holds while they make  networking connections  that could be beneficial after graduation.

8. Throw an event to kick off a mentorship program.

For many students, college can be an emotionally challenging time. Many students are away from home for the first time and may need an  icebreaker  to connect with others. Create a mentorship program that connects students with others who have faced and overcome similar challenges or experiences.

Encourage mentorship connections for new students, students in the LGBTQ+ community, those who struggle with addiction or grieving, and so on. Provide support for students who find themselves outside of their social, political, or economic comfort zones. Promote diversity, inclusion, and intersectionality.

9. Teach life lessons or “adulting” classes.

Unfortunately, many high schools don’t prepare students with valuable life skills like budgeting, cooking, basic home repair, or filing taxes. College students are working to evolve into full-on adults, so host fun classes that will teach them applicable skills . Teach time-management skills, budgeting best practices, and help prepare them for future loan expenses. Mastering skills like basic auto repair or home maintenance will help students become more independent.

Have some fun with class topics. You could even host a dorm room cooking class that shows students how to make restaurant-quality meals in their microwaves.

10. Help students relax with free de-stressing activities.

Student life can be incredibly stressful. Balancing classes, homework, papers, exams, and for many, a part-time job, can become a lot to handle. Mental health is a vital part of overall health, so engage students with campus-wide  de-stressing events , especially during exam seasons. Exercise can be a great mental health booster also. Partner with local fitness instructors to host yoga, pilates, or other  creative outdoor events  in the park.

If you want to get more creative, consider hosting a Campus Scream right in the middle of final exams when tensions are highest. Invite students to gather at a specific time and place to let out their frustrations together. After a countdown, encourage students to scream as loud as they can and release their stress together.

The fitness instructors who host classes will likely pick up new clients. Local cafés can refuel students and soothe their throats after the scream-a-thon. It’s another great way to connect students with local businesses.

11. Host fun, creative, and unique campus sporting events.

Most campuses have your run-of-the-mill sports teams: basketball, baseball, soccer, football, etc. Not all students are sports fans, but most students are fans of fun and are looking to take in interesting and new experiences.

Mix it up by hosting quidditch matches in the park or advertise a community-wide LARPing (live action role play) competition on campus. Seriously, who doesn’t want to watch a bunch of adults in medieval costumes hitting each other with rubber swords? Local businesses can set up tables and sell themed goods.

12. Promote student health with a Student Farmer’s Market.

A recent study from the American College Health Association found that 95% of college students don’t eat the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables. Not only that, but dorm food usually consists of ramen, pizza rolls, and pocketed dining hall items, and ” let’s be real here ” the options at the dining hall probably aren’t very healthy either. Many  students struggle with food insecurity and would greatly benefit from access to healthy, affordable ingredients. To help combat all of this, partner with local vendors, artisans, and farmers to set up a Farmer’s Market for students.

Encourage students to shop locally, eat healthy, and give them access to fresh, organic foods. Partner with the agriculture and food science departments to teach students about the work that goes into growing their food, environmental factors to consider, and the importance of farming in our society. If you have room, dedicate a spot on campus to a community garden where students can learn how to grow farm-fresh foods first-hand.

13. Host film festivals and student film competitions.

Connect film, theater, art, design, and other departments by sponsoring a student film competition. Encourage students to meet and create their own teams. Provide a 24-48 hour time limit for those students to write, direct, edit, and produce a short film. Screen the films at a local theater or on campus. Invite area critics and choose a panel of judges to pick the winner.

14. Connect with gamers by hosting a student tournament.

Host tournaments for classic and online gamers. Reserve space in a common area on campus and invite students to gather to compete in video game competitions. Schools without an ample A/V supply can host mini-tournaments in each dorm and ask students to bring their own monitors and game systems. Super Smash Brothers, FIFA, and Call of Duty are fan favorites.

Contact local businesses to sell tasty treats or invite energy drink vendors to get the party started. Promote prizes, online recognition, and some serious bragging rights.

With an intention to promote tourism in the state of Kerala, Government of Kerala proposed that schools and colleges should form tourism clubs in the respective institutions.  There should be a teacher coordinator and a student secretary with 75 members in the club.  As per the recommendation, a tourism club was formed in St. Teresa’s college in the year 2002. The club has named as ‘Evergreen Tourism Club’ from the year 2008-09.

In the year 2011 January a project proposal on the tourist destination Vallarpadam submitted by the Evergreen tourism club has been sanctioned by DTPC, Ernakulam and a financial assistance of Rs 1500/- approved for the same.  The project got completed and the report was submitted to DTPC.  A paper presentation of Vintage Vallarapadam has made in District Tourism Camp held at Piravom.

Every year as part of the world tourism day celebrations the club conduct various competitions like Essay writing, Logo Designing, My Shot, Quiz, Painting and Poster Designing. Create a Travel Club

A great way to keep students engaged and recruit new group members is to create a travel club. All of your tour participants can be members, and you can also open the club up to any student interested in learning more about the cultures of the world. The club can be student led. Find motivated students to take the lead, and they’ll be fostering a culture of global citizenship that will be sure to engage current travelers and entice future ones. Plus, some schools that don’t sponsor their teachers’ tours will allow you to talk travel at school if it’s in conjunction with the club.

What Does a Travel Club do?

The short answer is anything it wants! Most travel clubs have activities that will share the world’s cultures with their members. Here are some fun ideas to consider:

Food, food, food!

  • Nothing draws a crowd like the promise of delicious treat. Host an international potluck for lunch or after school, encouraging students to bring in dishes or desserts from all over the world.
  • Host a cookie baking contest where students bake cookie recipes from different parts of the world. You could even turn this into a fundraising bake sale to help support your club or your trip. Check out our blog post featuring cookies from around the world!
  • If there is a local international market, pick up some snacks from around the globe to share with the club.
  • Head to local international restaurant to try something new and delicious!

Movie Nights

  • Hold your meeting in the school auditorium and project an inspiring film or documentary about traveling or a different culture. Maybe even show some foreign films to really get an immersive experience! Check out some favorites here , here and here .
  • Show episodes of travel-related shows like Parts Unknown or Passport To about destinations you plan or dream of traveling to.

Yearbook Spotlight

  • Show off your worldly crew in your annual yearbook’s Club Spotlight section! Maybe you can even use a photo from abroad.

International Pen Pals

  • Give your students an opportunity to connect with other students around the world by participating in a global pen pal exchange.
  • Share music from around the globe, like these awesome German , French , Japanese and Spanish music videos.

Holiday Celebrations

  • Celebrate and learn about holidays & traditions like the Catalonian Christmas Log, Holi and Chinese New Year.

Prepare for your Trip!

The travel club is, of course, also a wonderful place to also talk about your trip and prepare for it. Not only can you get excited about what is on this year’s itinerary, you can also brainstorm where you’d like to go next!

There are many great options out there for you to choose from, and you can easily plan an event that your college students or friends will not soon forget. Creating a really cool college event can be a lot easier than you might think once you have the right ideas to work with.

What are some good college event ideas?

The best college events benefit from being both fun as well as educational or purpose-driven.

There are so many avenues to plan an informative event that is also fun when it comes to college event planning. College-age people are also really well-placed to make the most of these kinds of events because they will be choosing to attend based solely on their own decision. This is one of the best parts of making up plans for this kind of event.

College events can be specific to certain clubs or groups or offered to all of the college students who are enrolled at any given time. There are so many ways to make your event unique and special, and you might be shocked at just how easy it is to come up with a really unique idea for the college event that you are planning.

Always remember that you can take these ideas as the basis for your own unique and special creation that is totally unique. You are not stuck with the specifics that someone else added to their own event, and you can feel free to be entirely creative for your event if you wish.

List of Event Ideas for College Students and Campus Events

1. campus scavenger hunt.

Scavenger hunts are really ideal because they help college students to meet new friends, problem-solve effectively, and think outside the box. You can use a scavenger hunt app like Scavify to make a really creative and fun scavenger hunt for your college students with ease. You can use QR codes for check-ins at various campus locations or you can set up riddles and other forms of challenging questions that need to be answered in order to move through the hunt. Even list-based hunts are really fun, and your college student groups will have so much fun taking part in this event.

Using an app will help your students to upload pictures and videos, engage in a fun competition with one another, and more. Scavenger hunting is really ideal for orientation processes, but this kind of event can be used for other needs as well.

2. Cooking Class

Let’s face it, college kids usually really don’t know how to cook. This is one of the things that most college kids only realize belatedly once they are on their own. Save your college students or friends from cooking ramen for every meal by hosting this kind of college-friendly event. You will be helping everyone who attends to eat better and learn a very essential life skill at the same time as bonding with one another.

3.   Community Service

Community service can be a really positive event to offer for your college students and these kinds of events can make a big difference to the community as well. College kids might not be local to the place that they are going to school, and community service can help them to learn more about their new home and get more connected to the community that they had moved to. Being able to make a difference feels great, and many local service entities are always looking for help with their work.

4.   Mentor Program Event

If you have a mentor program at your campus, you can host a mentorship event that will help new students to get connected with a mentor. Mentorship can be a big plus for all kinds of reasons, and these kinds of events can be really fun to plan.

5.   Alumnus Meet and Greet

Many alumni will be able to offer advice to all of the students that they meet at this event, and it can be really fun to talk about how different the times are today as compared to when the alumni went to school. The wealth of life skills and knowledge that alumni have to offer can be really beneficial to new students and this event might lead to lasting bonds between former students and new students who need some help and support as they start college.

6.   Career Fair

While there are many events like this that are hosted at high schools around the country, you can make your college career fair much more useful and personal to your attendees. People attending college are often looking hard at what they are going to do for work when they are done with school. This is a great way to offer networking that can lead to job offers, internships, and more.

7.   Games Day

Offering a fun and lighthearted games day event can help students take a break from hard classwork and work and just have fun. Board games and puzzles can be ideal for this kind of event but you could also offer up video game consoles for some classic gaming if you wish as well. Playing games can offer up a great mental break for stressed and tired college students who might not think to take a break otherwise.

8.   Skills Events

If you have the resources to offer skills events, your students will probably be so excited to attend. This might be a coding class, a study skills class, or even a life skills course. Students can attend to get more information about something that would be hard to learn just from class, and they might leave better prepared to take on the world. College is all about getting exposed to new things and skills, and this is an ideal way to be sure that your students can gain this kind of benefit from their time in college.

9.   Meet Your Professor

Sometimes it can be hard to get to know professors in large group classes. This can be the missing piece for a student who is not connecting with class material. Offering a meet-your-professor session once a week with all of the staff on campus can be a big benefit for both students and teachers.

10. Pillow Fight Day

This is a really fun event that you can host if you don’t mind picking up a little bit of mess afterward. Pillow fighting is a safe way to let students take a break from the stress of school and have fun at the same time. There are so many really fun aspects to this kind of party, and the fact that it is really easy to organize is one of the biggest perks.

11.   Sports Events

Chances are that you have access to all kinds of really excellent sports facilities on your campus. Invite students to head to the climbing wall for free for a few hours during your event or offer access to the training facilities for the football team, basketball team, and so on. Students can have fun playing their favorite sport for a few hours.

undefined

12.   Music Event

Let your musically gifted students gather at a set time to play for one another and jam together. This is one of the best ways to let your artistic students share with the rest of campus as well if they choose to attend.

13.   Pizza Party

Who doesn’t love pizza? Pizza parties are really mellow, and affordable, and can offer kids who might be struggling a little with cash a chance to have a filling meal. You can host this kind of event anywhere on campus where food is allowed, which makes it really simple to organize.

14.   Debate Clubs

If you have enough students who love to talk about tough topics like politics or even philosophy, you can host a debate group that allows people to drop by and talk about the tough stuff that might be hard to bring up to others.

15.   Flash Mob

While a bit dated, this was a really fun thing to do, and it is so much easier than it used to be to plan something like this. Offer up a time and meetup place and give your students a theme, then make sure to video the results of them showing up to do school cheers, wear their best costumes, or even sing or dance together for about fifteen minutes.

List of Virtual Event Ideas for College Students

With more remote and online options being made available to students, there has been a rapid rise in the need and interest in hosting virtual events for university and college students. Below is a list to get the wheels turning on what could work well for your student population.

1.   Virtual Campus Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunting can be entirely virtual! If you did not know this and had dismissed this idea for your college event, think again! You can easily host a virtual campus scavenger hunt that will create lasting memories and bonds between your college students. A virtual scavenger hunt app like Scavify can help you to plan a virtual and digital variety of scavenger hunt just like they can help with an in-person event. Scavenger hunting teaches great life and study skills while also being super fun.

2.   TED Talks

You can use real TED talks for these events or let your students or staff host their own talks. This is a really informative and really cool way to open up a forum for education that is separate from the class materials that your students are exposed to every day.

3.   Chat Room Events

Want to invite people with the same interests to get together and just hang out? You can host events that work like breakout rooms and let your students chat, bond, and make new friends online while they talk about specific topics. You might need moderators to make sure that the rooms stay on task, at least a little, for latecomers to the chat.

4.   Lunch and Learn

Offer lunch events that take place just during the lunch hour that offer campus tips and tricks, ways to save money, or any other topic that you think matters to students. It can be nice to unplug your brain from studying and learn about something more personally useful once in a while during your time in college, and these events are perfect for this need.

5.   Podcast

Schools can have their own podcasts, and you might want to make a podcast for your school. Offering a virtual way to connect with student events, concerns, and skills-based learning can be really ideal for online students. This is a really simple way to connect with others as well, and there is not much to getting a podcast up and running.

6.   Webinars

There are so many ways that you can host webinars to help your college students to learn more than just class-based skills during college. From investing skills to job hunting skills and more, you can use your webinar events to help your students be ready for the real world when they leave school.

undefined

7. Virtual College Trivia

Everyone loves trivia, and hosting trivia events online is really easy these days. You can host yourself, or you can even have a company host a get-together for you and your students that will be a ton of fun. There is no shortage of topics for your trivia either, so you can make sure that you are offering a topic that everyone will love.

8.   DIY Tutorials

College kids are always trying out new things, and some of them might be just plain old guessing. DIY tutorials can help college students to have a better plan for making their dorm more comfortable, for building things, or just for saving space and being more organized overall. These kinds of tutorials can be a big benefit to those who are living on their own for the first time, and they are also really fun.

9.   Cooking Classes

College kids, and honestly most adults, could always stand to learn some more cooking skills. These kinds of fun online events can be hosted by anyone who has a recipe to share but there are also professional chefs who host these kinds of events and let others learn to cook just like them! These are great chances for anyone who needs more cooking skills to have fun and learn a lot at the same time.

10. Virtual Mentors with Practical Life Lessons

Sometimes we all need a little common sense life lesson to give us new insight into common skills. You can easily host these kinds of events with mentors who want to teach you about doing your taxes, car repairs, and other kinds of practical stuff that isn’t included in most college classes. This can be a great way to take a break from studying and to grow essential skills.

11. Meditation Event

College kids are really bad at taking time to care for themselves, but you can help them do so! Meditation events can be a great way for anyone who is busy and stressed to take a break and just slow down for a little bit. These events are really easy to organize as you can even lead them yourself if you wish. There are also lots of great online meditations that you can use for this purpose, or you can find an expert to lead your event in a time of quiet and peace that is probably much needed.

Consider scheduling this event close to the end of the term or near the start when things are the busiest, and many people forget to take care of their own needs adequately.

12. Yoga Class

Yoga classes are really ideal for those who are working virtually through the process of attending school. Sitting at a desk all day or even sitting on the couch can be really hard on your body, and students are always really guilty of forgetting to stand up and stretch. Yoga can be a great way to both move and stretch and also to calm the mind and deal with anxiety. There are so many perks to this option that you should consider this an essential every term.

13. Discussion Groups

Sometimes being at school all day online can be really isolating. Some students might not have anyone else around to even talk to. You will be doing these people a big favor by hosting discussion groups that let people get together and chat about common interests, themes, or even world events. This is a great way to encourage bonding and to help make sure that your students are connecting with new friends and study buddies as well.

undefined

14. Language Learning Groups

Learning a new language can be tough when you attend class in person, but what about when you attend online? If you have students who are attending classes fully online but have to take language classes, you will want to be sure that you offer this kind of event to them from time to time. This can be a great way for students to connect with study buddies, mentors, and even native speakers who can help them practice and grow in their comfort with this new language.

15. Virtual Career Fair

College students are starting to need to think about the future and the jobs they will be trying to get, which is why career fairs are such a good idea. It can be easy to transition this kind of event to an online-only fair because of the nature of technology these days. Offering this kind of perk to your students will help them to get hooked up with internships, study abroad options, and even potential employers when they complete their education.

College Events Can be Easy to Plan and Fun to Attend

These ideas should have given you a really good idea of all the things that are possible when you are planning a college event of any kind . Students at this age are ready to learn about so many things, which means that you can put together almost any kind of educational event with ease. You can also host events that are meant solely for having fun or relaxing or meeting study buddies and new friends. Whether your classes are offered in person or are hosted solely online, there is no shortage of great ways to get your students together so that they can have lots of fun and learn new skills with ease.

College events also do not have to break the bank to plan, and you can easily take on the task of hosting these adventures on your own in most cases. You might also want to just hire a company or a skilled expert to tackle the task of guiding the process. College students are busy, and they have a lot going on in their lives, but they are also uniquely placed to be able to make the most of enriching and fun added events that they might not experience in any other format.

Students in college often make lasting connections and have experiences that help them formulate who they will get to be going forward into the future. You can help to promote the right kinds of fun and engaging experiences to make sure that their time in college is everything that they hoped it would be just by using this authoritative guide.

20 Activities for the Travel-Curious Classroom

A list of culture-boosting activities for a classroom or travel club.

20 Activities for the travel-curious classroom

You’ve assigned the translation worksheets and the what-did-you-do-over-holiday-break essays. And it’s great because you’ve got them thinking about life in other parts of the world. But what’s next? If you’re like us at EF Tours , you’re constantly on the hunt for ways to bring students closer to the world at large. That’s why we thought a list of culture-boosting activities could be really helpful in a classroom, or for a travel club.

Grab a copy of the EF Journal

We hear great stories, tips, and insights from within our community of travelers, educators, and wanderers nearly every day. So, we’re sharing them with the world: cue the EF Journal . Within its pages, you can find fresh perspectives, fun activities, discussion topics, and more .

Do a Google Earth scavenger hunt

Exploring the world can start in the classroom. Find the coordinates for the world’s greatest wonders and hidden gems, then task your students with finding them on Google Earth , a free resource by Google that allows users to explore the world via satellite imagery. You can spice it up by including initial coordinates and some directions (move two blocks and then take a right), then asking them to describe the exciting new place they’ve discovered.

Host a music video watch party

Music aficionados, rejoice! Bring your favorite foreign language music videos, crowdsource some from your group, and have a music video marathon. Bonus points if your video includes elaborate dance routines  to practice.

Lead a lesson on body language from around the world

We all know that different parts of the world speak different languages . But what we might forget is that the body language and gestures we use each day may have different meanings when we’re abroad, and vice versa. With a quick Google search , you can find out how body language is used around the world—and practice nonverbal communication with your students.

Play geography trivia

Play into your students’ competitive spirit with a little travel trivia—find some questions online, or make some of your own. Either way, a little competition never hurt anyone, right?

Hold an international flavor taste-test

Seaweed potato chips. Green Tea Kit Kats. Melon Fanta. The world is wide and the combinations of national treasures with unique international flavors are endless. Lucky for your students, many of these oddball flavors can be ordered online . Just get a unique assortment of flavored snacks and test them out—Oreos are a good place to start since they come in a variety of flavors, they’re low-cost and easy to order online, and frankly, universally loved.

Try a suitcase challenge

Put your packing  skills to the test. Tightly pack a suitcase with funny items, then time your students on how quickly they can unpack and then re-pack it themselves. To keep it interesting, keep a scoreboard or play for small prizes.

Have a Carnival celebration

Carnival: It’s feathers, not Ferris wheels; costumes, not corn dogs; brass bands, not bumpy rides. It’s an annual festival of dancing, masks, and parades that is celebrated in over 20 countries around the world, including Brazil , Italy, and Jamaica—and now in your classroom. Explore the importance of Carnival in various regions and maybe have celebration of your own.

Need more ideas? Here are a few to get you started.

  • Do a local photography challenge
  • Have a souvenir show and tell
  • Lead an origami lesson
  • Take a group cooking class
  • Watch a foreign language TV show
  • Try a local foreign restaurant
  • Pair up with pen pals
  • Explore the Guggenheim, virtually
  • Create travel bucket lists
  • Have a Chinese New Year celebration
  • Watch a themed documentary as a group
  • Hold a Día de los Muertos celebration

Happy-go-lucky 4-h club memories and memorabilia.

tourism club activities in college

A package recently arrived at the Missouri 4-H Foundation’s office in Columbia. Inside was a 1930s-era 4-H cap and a perfectly preserved sewing project — a gingham checked coat hanger cover with precise pink stitching spelling out the initials R.C.

The items, along with a memoir, “Blossoming in the Show Me State,” chronicle the early years of Ruth Collins McQuerry, who grew up on a farm in northwestern Missouri.

Ruth eventually married Wayne McQuerry, a Navy reservist. The couple went on to live in different states for Wayne’s service and work in teaching, sales and aerospace. After retiring to California, they traveled extensively, including overseas. But Ruth’s roots reach back to the Atchison County Happy-Go-Lucky 4-H Club, of which she was a member from 1935 to 1941. Her daughter Patricia Usary shared her late mother’s memorabilia in hopes others would enjoy the glimpse into times past.

In a chapter devoted to her time in 4-H, Ruth recalled that Georgia Hedrick, her county school teacher at Eureka, “introduced her students to this wonderful program. Projects included sewing, woodworking and perhaps others that I don’t recall.” Ruth’s mother led the club’s sewing section, teaching the rudiments of hand sewing, including embroidery, as well as how to use her Damascus treadle sewing machine and insisting that seams be ripped out and redone until straight.

“That was a challenge!” Ruth wrote. “Keeping the machine running smoothly required rhythmic coordination of feet pumping the treadle and hands guiding pieces of cloth. In the beginning my legs didn’t quite reach the treadle. With the introduction of hand sewing and sewing machine, we hemmed dishtowels and embroidered designs, make simple blouses and aprons. And eventually skirts and dresses.”

Ruth often exhibited at the county fair, winning blue and red ribbons for her work. She’d sometimes participate in a revue wearing a garment she’d made, such as a navy blue wool skirt, white shirtwaist blouse and blue plaid tailored jacket.

At age 41, her father bought his own farm, where he grew hay, corn, wheat, oats and soybeans. In the early days, he still used draft horses to pull the implements. None of the 4-H club members lived in homes with electricity.

In the summer of 1941, as she was readying to start college, her 4-H club planned a camping trip to Crystal Lake in College Springs, Iowa.

None of the girls’ mothers could take time from “gardening, canning fruits and vegetables or cooking meals for extra farm hands” to serve as chaperones. It was decided that Ruth, at age 17, was old enough to chaperone the seven or eight girls who were going. “The week went smoothly” with the usual fun camping activities, such as making s’mores. “It was a memorable conclusion to my 4-H activities,” Ruth relates, with incredulity that a girl of 17 would be entrusted with such responsibility.

Her daughter Patricia wrote in an email, “Growing up during the Depression, Mother had to be adaptive and creative in making things. Her journey after high school was a challenge to a very shy country girl.”

Ruth was the first person in her family to attend college, at Northwest Missouri State Teacher’s College in Maryville, where she studied to become a home economics teacher.

“She had never been away from home before going to college and she had to work for her room and board,” Patricia wrote. “She never was afraid of hard work and instilled that in each of us as we grew. When she taught high school, she took that creativity to challenge the girls in a cooking class to bake cakes, pies, and cookies using different sweeteners as sugar had been rationed in WWII. They had to compare taste, texture and aroma.

“As an adult, she was a member of Kappa Omicron Phi, that she joined in college and stayed an active member for a number of years. She also continued to take classes to further her education in sewing, tailoring and quilting. Both she and my dad took writing classes through the park and recreation department in Orange County (California), and that’s where her book came to be.”
