Last Updated on April 9, 2020 by Augustin Fernandes

Old Goa

The city Old Goa was founded in the 15th century as a port on the banks of the Mandovi river by the Bijapur Sultanate. The place is known as Saibachem Goem,  Pornnem Goem, Adlem Goem or just Goem in Konkani

Old Goa has a number of the oldest and beautiful Churches in Goa and India. Some of the churches here are huge and all closely located to one another.

A trip down to Old Goa is breath-taking as you will see some beautiful architecture and artistry while seeing these magnificent pieces of work. Being the capital of Goa under the Portuguese Old Goa was the major city of development for the Portuguese and hence holds some of the most historic churches within its boundaries.

1. Old Goa Church – Basilica of Bom Jesus Old Goa

Old Goa Church

Old Goa Church is one of the most beautiful examples of baroque architecture seen in India. The church signifies the mark that the Portuguese had in Goa and is also known to be the unique of all the Goan Churches.

Church Structure and History

The entrance to the church is quite spectacular as you enter a beautifully ornamented door that leads you onto a marble stone floor inlaid with precious stones.

It is a large single Nave structure built between 1595 to 1605. It is the only Church with a façade not covered with plaster. The plaster was stripped off in 1970 by an over-zealous Portuguese conservationist who believed that this would help preserve the carvings on the façade better. Unfortunately, even though this was soon seen to be a false assumption, no one has put the plaster back

The baroque architecture of the building combined with the beautiful carvings and woodwork gives you a picturesque welcome.

Body of St Francis Xavier

What makes this Church special to the Goans and the tourists in particular, is the fact that it’s a sacred monument that holds the body of the famous Portuguese Saint: “St. Francis Xavier”.

Every year on the 3rd of December, the Basilica of Bom Jesus celebrates the feast of St. Francis Xavier.

The feast is witnessed by Christians as well as non-Christians alike and is open to the general public. It’s a place where Goans from different cultures unite together to celebrate the holiness of their land.

 9. Museum of Christian Art

Museum of Christian Art

The Museum of Christian Art is a unique place that showcases some of the exquisite Indo Portuguese church art that blossomed during the Portuguese era. The Museum was set up in the year 1994 by the Archaeological Survey of India.

What to see

The Museum of Christian Art has some of the best collection of Goa’s distinctive and exquisitely crafted church art. In the early days of Portuguese rule, most statues placed inside the churches were brought by ship from Portugal.

Since this could not carry on, the statues got in from Portugal were supplemented by images, furnishings and decorations crafted by local Hindu artisans who were brought in to keep up with the demand as the church building activity of the Portuguese accelerated in Goa.

The ground floor of the museum has an area of 350 square meter. It also has an upper floor gallery with an area of 150 square meters. The museum holds inside its doors, a collection of beautiful artifacts like the Pelican monstrance. This was based on the legend that in times of famine, the mother pelican plucks open her breast and feeds her young on her blood. The artistic iconography suggests that the holy sacrament is the food for man’s salvation.

The collection also includes rosaries and other items made of gold and precious stone. There is also a theme showcasing the famous Portugues St. Francis Xavier in silver plaques and on the panels of a silver casket inside the Msueum.

The museum also possesses some beautiful ivory images. An image of ‘The Good Shepherd’ illustrates Jesus as an allegorical shepherd watching his flock. Beneath him are frolicking lambs, a fountain and St Mary Magdalene lies in the front grotto.

The fastest route to Old Goa is by getting off at the Karmali Railway Station, which is 3km away from the main area of Old Goa.

The Dabolim Airport in Goa is 30 km away from Old Goa, and can be reached by bus or by Taxi in about an hour.

Panaji (Capital of Goa) is very close by and is 9km away. You can reach Old Goa from Panaji by bus. Catch a direct bus from the main Panaji Bus stand (Panjim-Ponda/ Panjim Old Goa Bus) which will take you directly to Old Goa.

Old Goa is also pretty close to the other tourist beach areas in Goa, like Calangute and Candolim, which is 20km away.

Now you can book the Taxi for tour and airport transfer through Goa Government website Goa Miles or download the App from Google play store Goa Miles App

Conclussion

My recommendation to the tourists who want to plan a visit to old Goa and catch a glimpse of the beautiful churches and monuments is to book a hotel in Panjim, the Capital of Goa. From here you can easily hire a taxi or catch a bus to Old Goa, which is just a 20 minute ride.

Staying in Panjim will allow you to be central to other tourist destinations as well , so you can plan a morning to old Goa whenever you feel like it as well as make yourself free to discover the other beautiful places around Panjim like the streets in Fontainhais.

2. Se Cathedral and Church of St. Francis of Assisi

Se Cathdral in Old Goa

Se Cathedral was built to honour the victory of the Portuguese under Afonso de Albuquerque - a Portuguese general over a Muslim army, leading to the capture of Goa in 1510. Following that, in 1517, eight Portuguese friars landed in Goa and set up the Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi and an adjacent convent for them to reside to the west of Se Cathedral. A few years later, this chapel was constructed into a proper church and thus came to be known as the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. This area, much like all others in Old Goa, is quite well-maintained. The lawns are ever-green and decorated with colourful flowers year-round. You can either walk around here to enjoy the lawns or visit the museum inside to gain a little more knowledge on the Portuguese conquest of Goa.

3. St. Augustine Tower

Old Goa attractions - St Augustine Tower

Just a few hundred meters away from the Basilica of Bom Jesus, lies the iconic St. Augustine tower, one of the top places to visit in Old Goa. The tower is located in a complex which is in ruins. Look closely and you might recognise this tower from multiple Bollywood movie songs and action scenes. There used to be a bell in this tower which was removed and relocated to the Panjim Church - Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, where it still sits today. The best part about this area is that it's in close proximity to the Old Goa Church, yet there are only a select few curious souls that manage to make their way here.

4. St. Cajetan Church

Places to visit in Old Goa - attractions St Cajetan Church

Speaking of rarely visited attractions in Old Goa, St. Cajetan Church is high up on that list. This church is supposed to have been modelled after St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. Notice the similarity in the column structure of both the Basilicas. Moreover, the interior of this Church is just as impressive as the exterior. It's a shame that so many tourists come to visit the Old Goa Church yet almost all of them miss out on yet another great church located just a few hundred meters away.

5. Church of Our Lady of the Mount

Places to visit in Old Goa - attractions church of our lady of mount

I had to save the best Old Goa attraction for the last. Perched comfortably at the top of a hillock, this is where you should end your day trip to Old Goa. Setting the stage for a spectacular sunset view, the church overlooks three marvellous structures. From left to right we see the St. Augustine tower, Se Cathedral and finally the Church of St. Cajetan to the right. As the sun goes down and the sky takes up an orange hue, you'll find a few curious souls as well as some cheeky youngsters enjoying their evenings here.

It became a tradition for any newly elected Viceroy to pass through the arch and receive the keys to Old Goa, the former capital of Goa. This Old Goa attraction is a favourite among history buffs.

Popular coastal hot spots, like Colva Beach and Palolem Beach , draw tourists to Goa from around the world. The destination also has unique Portuguese-influenced cuisine , historical churches and temples , vibrant wildlife , and fascinating spice farms . No matter how long you spend in Goa, you'll wish you had a few extra days to explore.

For more ideas to help plan your trip to India, see our list of the top tourist attractions in Goa.

Popular Beaches

Beaches off the beaten path, tanshikar's working spice farm, portuguese-indian restaurants, basilica de bom jesus, dudhsagar falls, anjuna market, church of our lady of the immaculate conception, braganza house, mahadev temple, palácio do deão, mangeshi temple, bhagwan mahavir wildlife sanctuary, reis magos fort, map of attractions and places to visit in goa, goa, india - climate chart.

Palolem Beach

Beaches play a starring role among the attractions in Goa, contributing to why it's one of the best places to visit in India .

Nearly every tourist who visits the area spends a day at Palolem Beach , a crescent-shaped stretch of white sand that overlooks the Arabian Sea in south Goa. While simply hanging out and soaking up the scenery is a perfect way to enjoy this beautiful area, Palolem Beach also offers an array of activities to fill your time. Choose from kayaking , yoga classes , dolphin-sightseeing trips, and swimming . You can also spend the night in one of Palolem's rustic coco huts , which are erected at the start of the high season.

Colva Beach is another one of the most famous beaches in Goa , especially among Indian tourists. It has swaying palms and a broad stretch of bronze sand, where you'll occasionally see herds of cows sunbathing next to tourists. You can rent Jet Skis , hop on a thrilling banana boat ride , and get a bird's-eye view of the beach on a parasailing adventure.

Homestay accommodations in the area will give you an authentic local-style experience – plus easy access to Colva Beach.

Sunset at Utorda Beach

While known for their spectacular scenery, the popular beaches in Goa tend to get crowded during high season, leaving some travelers eager for a quieter natural escape. Fortunately, Goa brims with undiscovered beach attractions and things to do that give you some distance from the throngs of tourists while still treating you to glorious sand and surf.

One of the best hidden gems in Goa is Butterfly Beach. It has a curving expanse of sand flanked by boulders that create a postcard-worthy cove, brimming with butterflies and blossoms. It's also a great spot to watch dolphins swim in the distance.

You'll need to embark on a boat ride from Palolem Beach or Agonda Beach, or tackle a challenging forest hike, to reach Butterfly Beach – but the obstacles to getting here help to thin out the crowds. You might even have the place to yourself.

While more developed than Butterfly Beach, Utorda Beach is another stunning getaway from the more crowded beaches around Goa. It features clean, blue water; silky sand; and a few small beach shacks. Look closely as you wade in the water, and you may spot some small starfish .

Nutmeg, mace, and curry leaf, Tanshikar Spice Farm, Goa

South India has been known for its abundance of spices, like black pepper, cardamom, and cloves, for centuries. In fact, these natural flavorings were a major appeal for Portuguese traders who came to Goa hundreds of years ago.

Tourists can see what the local spice scene is all about by touring Tanshikar's Working Spice Farm & Ecological Rest House . This agritourism attraction grows seven different spices: pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, turmeric, cardamom, and chili, using totally organic farming methods.

Tours of the farm, often led by its owner, will give you an in-depth understanding of these flavor-charged crops and a chance to see some of the other products, like betelnut, coffee beans, pineapple, and banana, grown on the premises. Tanshikar's also keeps bees and produces its own all-natural honey.

Spice farm tours aren't the only fun thing to do at Tanshikar's. Guests can also take a vegetarian cooking class , visit a bubbly lake , trek to Mainapi Waterfall, and train to become a yoga teacher. It's an attraction that has something for everyone.

Address: Netravali, near Smriti Yoga, Sanguem, Goa

Goan coconut fish curry

Food is a major attraction in Goa. This part of India has a distinctive cuisine that blends Portuguese and Goan flavors, setting it apart from all the other food around India. Expect fiery flavors, fresh-caught seafood, and an abundance of coconut in the dishes.

You can't leave Goa without trying its signature dish, vindaloo, a super-hot meat curry made with palm vinegar and dried red chili peppers. Hospedaria Venite in the capital of Goa, Panaji , wows tourists with its mouthwatering vindaloo. Dominick, a Benaulim Beach mainstay, is another favorite spot for vindaloo – plus it offers front-row seats for world-class sunsets.

Another Goan specialty is xacuti, a rich curry with poppy seeds, chili, and coconut. Try it at Souza Lobo , a beachfront restaurant in Calangute , or Fat Fish , a well-trafficked spot in Baga.

Tourists hankering for some fresh seafood are spoiled for choice around Goa. Zeebop , on Utorda Beach , offers delightful fish curry, prawn stew, and mackerel doused with spicy red sauce.

You also can't go wrong with dinner at Copperleaf. The upscale restaurant in Porvorim has a fish thali that you'll be dreaming about long after you've finished.

Basilica de Bom Jesus

While many tourists visit Goa for the beaches, countless others consider the trip to be a pilgrimage to important religious sites, like the Basilica de Bom Jesus.

This Old Goa attraction dates back to the late 16th century and contains the remains of the St. Francis Xavier . The "Apostle of the Indies" co-founded the Society of Jesus religious order with friend St. Ignatius Loyola and spearheaded an extensive mission in India. The basilica has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The modest yet imposing structure is a mix of Doric, Corinthian, and Baroque style with intricate carvings. Interestingly, the building was stripped of its lime plaster in the mid-20th century, making it the only church in Goa without plaster. The Basilica de Bom Jesus has since become worn by monsoons.

You can tour the church on your own, or hire one of the independent guides near the entrance for a small fee. Inside, you can see huge ornamental screens, along with the body of the resident saint in a casket that was once covered in precious stones. It's a compelling place that will transport you back in time.

Every year, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier draws big crowds to this church in late November and early December. It kicks off with a nine-day novena and open-air masses before concluding with the major holiday on Dec. 3.

Address: Old Goa Road, Bainguinim, Goa

Dudhsagar Falls

Aquatic adventures go beyond the beach in Goa. The state is also home to Dudhsagar Falls, a spectacular four-tiered waterfall that towers some 310 meters above the earth. It's one of India's tallest waterfalls and a perpetually popular attraction for day trips around Goa and Karnataka .

To reach the falls, you'll need to make your way to the village of Colem by taxi or train. Depending on which train route you take, you may get a glimpse of Dudhsagar Falls along the way. Then, you'll hop aboard a shared jeep through the jungle, passing Devil's Canyon along the way. Around 45 minutes later, you'll scurry over some boulders to finally reach the falls.

The best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls is right after the monsoon , when the water is gushing. Tourists who wish to take a dip can rent a life jacket from vendors at the attraction.

Hot tip: Only 300 jeeps are allowed to enter Dudhsagar Falls every day, although tour operators have been requesting to increase the capacity during high season. Make reservations in advance, or prepare to wait in long lines if you wish to visit.

Anjuna Market

Goa is home to a ton of markets, but none offer the liveliness or selection of products found at Anjuna Market. For roughly 50 years, hundreds of vendors have been setting up shop on Anjuna Beach every Wednesday to tempt free-spirited travelers with hippy-inspired trinkets and souvenirs.

Ornate textiles, woven bikinis, sculptures of deities, dreamcatchers, hammocks, magnets, t-shirts with sassy slogans, beaded jewelry, toys – you name it, you can probably buy it here.

But even if you don't want to shop, you should still make a point to visit Anjuna Market for the sightseeing. The flea market is a swirling array of colorful wares, salespeople driving hard bargains, big bags of fresh spices, and street food galore. The vibe alone is one of the reasons why Anjuna Market is one of the top places to visit in Goa.

Address: 10 St. Michael's Vaddo South, Anjuna, Goa

Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

Make your way to the laid-back city of Panaji to visit another one of Goa's historic churches: The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The pristine white church, which dates back to the early 17th century, stands atop a zig-zagging staircase that resembles the tiers of a wedding cake. Its perfectly symmetrical Portuguese Baroque architecture is a sight to behold. At night, twinkle lights make the church look like something out of a fairy tale.

While not ornate, the church's interior boasts bright, colorful decorations. Tourists can see the elegant main altar (dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus) and gilded pillars with elaborate carvings. Vines of blue and white blossoms often adorn parts of the vaulted ceiling around various holidays.

Dec. 8 marks the Festival of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception , a major holiday at this church. Swing by to see it decked out in tons of colorful lights.

Address: Rua Emídio Garcia, Altinho, Panaji, Goa

Braganza House

See what houses in Goa looked like during the 17th century at Braganza House, a historical mansion that flanks the village square in Chandor. It's divided into an east and west wing, both of which are available for tourists to poke around at their leisure.

The east wing is home to members of the Pereira-Braganza family. It boasts a massive ballroom with an impressive marble floor, along with a small chapel that contains one of St. Francis Xavier's fingernails. This part of Braganza House also brims with antiques and international artifacts.

The western side preserves the original grandeur of Braganza House. Owned by the Menezes-Braganças, the museum-like space features an expansive library with 5,000 leather-bound books from the private collection of journalist Luis de Menezes Braganza, who played an important role in the Goan independence movement. Tourists can also see breathtaking Belgian glass chandeliers, antique portraits of the family, and Chinese porcelain.

Address: Guddi-Chandor Road, Culsabhatt, Chandor, Goa

Mahadev Temple

Located just 12 kilometers north of Molem , Mahadev Temple gives tourists a chance to see a structure that has been standing since the 12th century. Its remote location helped it survive centuries of conquests by the Portuguese and Muslim colonialists. Legend has it that the black basalt temple , which was built to honor Lord Shiva, has a resident king cobra. Step inside to see the detailed work of artisan carvers, including the lotus flower on the ceiling.

If Braganza House got you excited, just wait until you see Palácio do Deão. The 200-plus-year-old palace in Quepem has been restored to its original glory. It features a blend of Indian and Portuguese architecture. Tourists are welcome to explore the heritage home, including its game room and library filled with rare tomes.

The property also features sweeping tropical gardens that make for a pleasant place to spend the afternoon. Consider making reservations in advance for afternoon tea on the terrace.

Address: Opposite Holy Cross Church, Quepem, Goa

Official site: http://www.palaciododeao.com/

Mangeshi Temple

Goa's unique culture and heritage are on full display at Mangeshi Temple, a beautiful spiritual attraction that's been standing for roughly 450 years. The pastel blue, gold, and white temple features a seven-story tower that pays homage to one of the Hindu god Shiva's many incarnations: Manguesh. The temple structures surround a sacred pool of water , which is thought to be the most historic part of this religious site.

You can watch devotees perform pujas (worship rituals) at the temple every day. If you happen to be there on a Monday, you can watch the Manguesh idol taken out for a procession, complete with music, in the late afternoon or early evening.

Address: Dinanath Mangeshkar Road, Mangeshi Village, Mardol, Goa

Colorful buildings in Fontainhas

Lace up your most comfortable pair of walking shoes and head to Panjim for a stroll around Fontainhas, one of Asia's only Latin quarters . Once the headquarters for the Portuguese government in Goa, the UNESCO-recognized Heritage Zone features colonial houses and cottages decked out with pastel and fluorescent façades. Each of the houses get a fresh coat of paint after the monsoon season every year, ensuring that they always look vibrant for visitors. Don't miss the district's namesake Fountain of Phoenix.

You can explore the area on your own, or book a walking tour for a more in-depth look at the history of this fascinating neighborhood. Either way, you'll definitely work up an appetite as you wander the narrow cobblestone streets and snap photos in front of the candy-colored buildings. Refuel at one of the decades-old cafés or bakeries in the neighborhood. Confeitaria 31 de Janeiro , a bakery near Mary Immaculate School, is known for having a wide selection of tasty Goan cakes and sweets.

Macaque in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife lovers should put Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary at the top of their Goa travel plans. The state's largest protected wildlife area, which spans 240 square kilometers and is also home to Molem National Park , is home to all kinds of amazing creatures, including the black leopard, Bengal tiger, Malabar giant squirrel, wild boar, slender loris, Indian rock python , and ruby-throated yellow bulbul (Goa's state bird).

Hiring a guide through a travel agent, and visiting the sanctuary in the early morning or late evening increases your chances at catching a glimpse of these animals. During the daytime, you can see the natural wonders of Dudhsagar Falls and Devil's Canyon . You can also check out the Tambdi Surla Temple , a temple that has survived since the 12th century, thanks to its remote location in the forest. The structure is adorned with intricate carvings of the Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.

Cannon at Reis Magos Fort

Dating back to 1493, Reis Magos Fort was once a defense structure aimed at protecting the area's then-capital, Goa Velha. Today, the fort is a top attraction in Goa for tourists looking to take a break from the beaches and dive into the state's fascinating history.

The site has a storied past not only as a military outpost, but also as a hospital and a jail. Tourists can see cannons, a small museum exhibit on the fort's history, and jaw-dropping views of the Mandovi River .

After your visit, head to the town's other famous attraction: Reis Magos Church. The pristine white church is one of just a handful of churches in Goa that has processions and re-enactments for the Feast of the Three Kings (Epiphany). Inside the structure, you can see an impressive multi-colored wood relief of a scene that depicts the Three Wise Men handing gifts to the Baby Jesus.

Overview to Old Goa

Situated in the Tiswadi taluka (Ilhas) of the North Goa district, in the Indian state of Goa,  Old Goa  is a historical location and city. It is situated on the southern banks of the River Mandovi.

In the fifteenth century A.D., the Bijapur Sultanate founded the city. It served as the capital of Portuguese Indian possessions after the Portuguese conquest of Goa, including the territory of Mumbai/Bombay (Bom Bahia) and the state of Kochi/Cochin (Cochim), until its abandonment in the 18th century AD due to a plague. It is believed that during Portuguese rule, the city had a population of close to 200,000, from which the spice trade was conducted throughout the Portuguese East Indies.

UNESCO has designated the deserted city as a World Heritage Site. Panjim (Portuguese: Nova Goa, lit. “New Goa”), the current state capital, is located about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) east of Old Goa.

The sultans of Bijapur founded the city as a port on the banks of the Mandovi River in the 15th century. After Bijapur, Old Goa served as the seat of the Adil Shahi Dynasty. It was enclosed by a moat and housed the palace, mosques, and temples of the shah. As the administrative center of Portuguese India, the city came under Portuguese control after being taken by them in 1510.

In 1759, the viceroy’s residence was moved to Panjim, the future capital (a village located about 9 kilometers to the west). At Old Goa, there aren’t many, if any, remains from the pre-Portuguese era.

The Portuguese colony of Goa, particularly Velha Goa, served as the East’s primary hub for Christianization in the middle of the 16th century. All religious orders evangelized the city because it was the location of their headquarters. By 1543, the population had reached about 200,000. The city was largely abandoned in the 17th century due to cholera and malaria epidemics, with only 1,500 people left in the city in 1775.

The viceroy then relocated to Panjim. Up until 1843, when it was moved to Panjim (Ponnjê in Konkani, Nova Goa in Portuguese, and Panaji in Hindi), it remained the de jure capital of Goa. To distinguish it from the new capital Nova Goa (Panjim) and possibly also from Goa Velha (also meaning “Old Goa”), the Portuguese name for the town on the former site of Govapuri, the abandoned city came to be known as “Velha Goa” (in Portuguese, “Old Goa”).

Old Goa Places to Visit (or to skip)

Home » Asia » India

When it comes to Goa there are very few “tourist” attractions, but one is called Old Goa. If you’re going to be here for a short time I don’t recommend seeing Old Goa and actually have only gone once, which was after a year of living here when Colleen who blogs at  Colleen Brynn Travels visited me.

I thought it was more of a tiny little town but actually it’s a square with a couple old Portuguese churches which admittedly have a lot of history (I actually enjoy sharing history on Hippie in Heels but only topics I’m interested in.. and well, I can’t be bothered on this topic.. ah, how many people will this offend!), cute stray dogs, and mass amounts of street vendors selling junk rather than typical tourist gifts you see on the beach. There were a lot of tourists here and it’s so far the only place I’ve been in Goa where you should dress modest like the rest of India wishes.

Other than Old Goa, another architectural place to maybe take a tour of is Panjim, the capital. The architecture is very European. I love the way the streets are angled like in Paris.

Overall it’s not much to see and although a little interesting I feel like Goa is known for it’s beaches, jungles, and nightlife (and nothing else) for a reason: the touristy things like buildings and museums aren’t that great in comparison to other places.

I suggest only coming to Old Goa if you  have lots of time on your hands or if you have never been to Europe. My parents will visit in December for at least 10 days and I’m not going to bother taking them here. I actually don’t mean to offend any Goans or people who love Old Goa, but as I’ve said many times, I write on here what I would tell a friend visiting.

If you’ve seen great architecture before you might find it a little boring here. I could go on and on about how the European influence that left just recently means there are tons of Christians in Goa, but I really doubt you all are interested! There is so much more to Goa, which is what I’m writing about on here all the time. Make sure to check out my ultimate guide to Goa  to get some ideas.

If you want to take photos with Indian locals or tourists, just ask and most likely they will agree to it and want one on their phone too. Often times they will ask you before you have a chance to ask! Some of my favorite photos are with random groups like this.

This is a great advice!

I usually have the habit of visiting the “Old town” of any town I visit to fill up my culture and history batteries and then…. head out in the other parts for cheap food/accommodations and blend with the population :)

Old Goa will then be the first exception to my pattern :)

It will be so much fun to visit those places in real life after seeing them in pictures on your blog. Cannot wait!

Much love from a fellow globetrotter :)

Myriam @OffToWanderland

' src=

Yeah I mean I don’t want people to not go because I didn’t like it, but if you’ve seen this kind of thing it’s not really worth the time!

' src=

Now I’m interested to hear where you’ll be taking your parents!

well, i want them to see bombay first so they can have serious culture shock! I don’t think they’d want much more than a couple days there. then we come down to goa and do the chill beach scene, they only have 10 days because are both teaching and only have christmas break off. :(

' src=

Quite the entrance to that Christian church!! Always good to hear where to skip. I never picture anything like Old Goa when I think of Goa… I guess mainly cause it’s been in my head as a surfing destination for years, so I mostly picture the beach!

Yeah for sure, not a lot of people go here and its usually indian tourists you travel mainly domestically because they won’t have seen such european architecture. western tourists tend to skip!

' src=

I appreciate your honesty about which places to skip. Ha, I love how all the stray dogs are just lounging in front of the church entrance. Too funny :)

yes they were so cute! a little skinny but sadly im getting used to seeing that :(

' src=

I’m headed to India next April (hopefully), so I’ll be reading up on your stuff a lot! I love the honesty. Old Goa reminds me a lot of Kota in Jakarta – we got there and we’re like – is this it? haha

I’m glad you’re finding the blog helpful!

' src=

Lovely photos! I remember visiting all the famous beaches, churches and temples in Goa when I visited it 15 years ago!

wow 15 years, i think you need to come back sooN!

' src=

no matter how many times one explores goa there always seems to be an elusive area to find.as always you are helpful.

Thanks John!

' src=

This place looks like it’s filled with hospitable and smiley locals who are always there to guide you. Have you met Colleen in person? So awesome! I often read her blog and follow her adventures on social media channels. Lovely girl!! <3

Yes colleen came and stayed for like 4-5 days and it was SO fun!! she’s the sweetest!

' src=

Your most valid point is that its charming if one hasn’t seen Europe, and after 2 weeks in Arambol panjim feels nice, we went there to watch a movie on our anniversary

I do love the movie theatre! I think I’m going next week to see The Fault in Our Stars! I’ll probs have to get a subway too ;) can’t help it!

In its 16th century heyday, when the Portuguese had their headquarters there, Old Goa was apparently so vibrant it was common for people to say, "He who has seen Goa need not see Lisbon". The Portuguese built many churches and convents, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The most notable ones are Se Cathedral (the seat of the Archbishop of Goa), the Basilica of Bom Jesus (which contains the mortal remains of Saint Francis Xavier), and the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi. Goa Magic conducts an insightful two hour Heritage Walk of Old Goa. With a little imagination, you'll get a feel for its past glory. Visiting the Archeological Museum in the convent of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi (behind Se Cathedral), and the Christian Art Museum in the restored Convent of Santa Monica, will help! For an added dose of history, see the ruined entrance to the Palace of Yusuf Adil Shah beside the Church of St Cajetan. It's the only remains that exist of the Bijapur Sultanate, whose ruler founded Old Goa in the 15th century before the Portuguese took over. Those who are interested in religious art can also visit the newly reopened Museum of Christian Art in Old Goa . It underwent a four-year refurbishment and has a unique collection of Indo-Portuguese art objects in ivory, gold, silver, wood and textiles spanning the 16th-20th centuries.

Goa Tourism's open-top Hop on Hop Off Bus departs from Panjim and provides an inexpensive way of getting to Old Goa. Tickets cost 300 rupees.

Explore the Latin Quarter

A series of epidemics, including the plague, caused the Portuguese to leave Old Goa in the late 18th century and shift their headquarters to Panjim. The area, known as Fontainhas, was developed into an affluent residential area for rulers and administrators. Today, it's renowned for its colorful old Portuguese homes, belonging to the last surviving Portuguese families of Goa. Fontainhas was declared a UNESCO Heritage Zone in 1984 and it's a wonderfully atmospheric place to spend some time. A few of the mansions have been converted to characterful hotels and guesthouses, so you can stay there as well. Other attractions include boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. Make it Happen conducts a recommended immersive Fontainhas Heritage Walk .

Marvel Over Old Portuguese Mansions

Although there are plenty of old Portuguese mansions in the Latin Quarter, the most opulent and imposing ones are located in south Goa. These homes, which date back centuries, are still lived in by generations of the original owners. Some are open to the public, and they display a treasure trove of historical memorabilia. You'll find them in Chandor (the Braganza House), Loutolim (Casa Araujo Alvares) and Quepem (Palacio do Deao). It's possible to chat to the owners, who have a wealth of knowledge, too!

Visit Reis Magos Fort

There are a number of forts in Goa but Reis Magos Fort is the oldest. The Sultan of Bijapur, Yusuf Adil Shah, built a military outpost there in 1493. Despite its strategic position on the Mandovi River, it wasn't able to stop the Portuguese invasion. The Portuguese developed the fort in 1551 to defend their capital at Old Goa. It was enlarged numerous times and then completely reconstructed in 1707. However, the fort was no longer required for defense after the Portuguese shifted to Panjim. It was converted into a prison in the early 1900s and functioned as such, with more than 100 freedom fighters being held there, before being abandoned in 1993. Restoration of the fort was initiated in 2008 by the late Mario Miranda, a much-loved cartoonist from Loutolim in Goa. It opened to the public in June 2012 and has a gallery displaying his works. Mario's cartoons are centered around daily life in Goa and Mumbai, and they're really entertaining.

Discover Goa's Local History Through Art

Museum of Goa

Founded and curated by artist Subodh Kerkar, the interactive Museum of Goa opened in 2015 within the stark context of north Goa's Pilerne Industrial Estate. This unique museum aims to bring the state's history to life through a permanent exhibition of contemporary art. It also has temporary exhibition spaces, an auditorium, art and design store, cafe, sculpture garden and artists studios. Try to attend one of the numerous workshops, lectures, and performances that are held there. And, if you're interested in buying art, don't miss the annual Affordable Art Fest. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Tickets cost 100 rupees for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. There are discounts for students.

Learn About Farming and Traditional Lifestyle in Goa

Luis Davilla/Getty Images

Traditionally, Goa's economy was based on agriculture rather than tourism. In order to showcase and preserve this way of life, artist and restorer Victor Hugo Gomes set up a museum called Goa Chitra , with more than 4,000 artifacts on display. Many of them are old farming tools and equipment, as well as other implements including kitchen utensils. Each is supplemented by interesting information about its use. There's also a separate section, Goa Chakra, with about 70 heritage carriages. The museum was constructed on neglected land near Benaulim, in south Goa, out of materials salvaged from 300 year-old Goan houses. A functional organic farm has also been set up next to it, so visitors can understand how some of the artifacts were used. Opening times are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with tours conducted every hour. Tickets cost 300 rupees. Discounts are offered for students and groups.

It's even possible to stay on a farm in Goa, with the farmstay concept catching on and growing in popularity. Eco-friendly Dudhsagar Plantation Farmstay is one such place, where guests are accommodated in five rustic cottages on the lush property with a swimming pool. The farm produces everything from spices to pineapples and guided tours are conducted. Mangaal Farmstay is another property that provides guests with the opportunity to participate in activities such as vegetable growing, flower harvesting, and paddy field preparation.

Eat Goan Cuisine and Get a Cooking Lesson

When thinking of Goan cuisine, ubiquitous fish curry and rice probably comes to mind. This is undoubtedly a staple. However, there's so much more to Goan food! Distinctly diverse and non-vegetarian, it's been influenced by its Hindu origins, Muslim rule, and Portuguese colonization.  Xacutti (coconut-based curry), cafreal (marinated and fried/grilled), sorpotel (stew), recheado (stuffed), and ambot tik (sour and spicy) are all types of dishes that are commonly served. And of course, not to overlook Goan chourico (sausages) and Goan pao (bread). Sadly, traditional Goan cuisine is disappearing but move away from the beaches and you'll find some authentic restaurants where you can discover what Goan food is all about. Want to learn to cook Goan food? The classes offered by Rita's Gourmet Goa in Dabolim (close to the airport) and Siolim Cooking School are recommended.

Drink Some Feni

It's almost impossible to visit Goa and not encounter feni, the unofficial state drink. This rather aromatic (some would stay stinky) spirit is produced solely in Goa out of cashew fruit or the sap from coconut palms. You're likely to turn your nose up at the cheap, commercially produced feni due to its smell. The secret is to find home-distilled feni (if staying at one of Goa's homestays or Dudhsagar Plantation Farmstay ), or get it like the locals do from village distillers. Otherwise, a quality bottle of Big Boss or Cazulo is a reliable choice. Drink it with tonic water or lemonade and a slice of lime. For a memorable local experience, order the feni cocktail at Joseph Bar in Panjim's Fontainhas Latin Quarter . This tiny, hip hangout has been recently restored to its former glory. It's open in the evenings from 6-10 p.m. Alternatively, it's now possible to go straight to the source of Cazulo feni -- their cellar in the Cansaulim foothills. The cellar, which is said to the the only one in the world, opened to the public in January 2019. Get a guided tour and feni tasting session for 2,000 rupees per person, including food and alcohol. Phone 8605008185 to book.

Listen to Live Jazz

Music, especially Jazz, is an important element of Goan life. Many Goan musicians learned western styles of music under Portuguese rule, led dance bands in the 1930s and 1940s, and infused jazz and swing into Bollywood music. The elegant century-old Gonsalves Mansion in leafy Campal, near Panjim, is known as the Home of Jazz in Goa. The jazz revival began with many fine jazz musicians playing on its porch. Jazz Goa , a group of Goan jazz musicians, also host live jazz performances. Nowadays, many other venues in Goa have live jazz as well. Monday Jazz Nights at Cantare in Saligao village are legendary. You may also find live jazz jamming sessions happening there on Friday nights. There's a live jazz band every Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. at O'Mistico, opposite the Novotel hotel in Candolim. In addition, Jazz Inn in Cavelossim, and  Jazz and Grills in Calangute (the new Whiskey Bar at Le Meridien hotel), often have jazz bands. Check out the entertainment program on the Deltin Royale casino as well. The annual International Jazz Day is celebrated in Goa on April 30 with special jazz concerts. Plus, there is the Goa International Jazz Live Festival, held by Jazz Circuit India in November or December every year.

See Goa's Oldest Existing Hindu Temple

Sharell Cook.

Hidden away in the forest at Tambdi Surla, near Mollem National Park, is what's believed to be the oldest Hindu temple in the state. The remarkable, intricately-carved 13th century Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It survived both Muslim and Portuguese invasion largely because of its remote inland location at the foothills of the Western Ghat mountains. The temple is well-maintained and free to enter. Nature-lovers should also hike up to little-known Tambdi Surla waterfall in neighboring Bhagwan Mahavir National Park.

Sunaparanta Goa Center for the Arts

Goa has some great art and culture spaces for those who are creatively inclined. In the picturesque Altinho hills of Panjim, Sunaparanta Goa Center for the Arts houses several exhibition galleries, a library, a large multi-functional space for workshops and lectures, an open-air amphitheater, and a courtyard with outdoor cafe. Apart from exhibitions, Sunaparanta hosts events such as book releases, lectures, musical performances and theater presentations. Do check their calendar of events. Alternatively, head to Sadhana Dell' Arte in another refurbished century-old Indo-Portuguese mansion, this one in Merces. It offers an artist residency, an art gallery, a co-working space, and cafe. One of the aims is to promote local artists and culture.

Experience a Festival

Many Christian festivals are celebrated in Goa, including Christmas . A number of these festivals take place during the monsoon season. On June 24, Sao-Joao (the fertility feast of Saint John the Baptist) features men jumping into overflowing village wells to retrieve bottles of local feni alcohol. The feast of Saints Peter and Paul happens on June 29, with people sailing up river on rafts performing plays and songs. In late August, the Bonderam flag festival is held on tiny Divar Island, off the coast from Panjim. The Goa Carnival is another famous festival, which usually occurs in February each year. Shigmo is a Hindu spring festival that's Goa's version of Holi . Goa also celebrates Hindu festivals including Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali .

Chapora Fort

Why it’s awesome: Overlooking the Chapora River, the mighty Chapora Fort was constructed in 1717. It’s sandwiched between Chapora and Vagator Beach with mesmerizing views. It sits on the site of older defensive fortresses. The fort has been ruled by several leaders and was the subject of fighting between the Portuguese and the Marathas, with each wanting to gain control of the fortress. Nobody is quite sure why the waters bubble, with some people attributing the activity to natural gases and others believing in more divine causes. Interestingly, it is said that clapping and making other sounds affects the speed and amount of bubbles!

What to do there: Climb the granite steps to get close to the water’s edge at Netravali Lake and wait to see bubbles rising up to break when they reach the surface. Fish swim in the lake and the views are pretty. Go into the step well for cooler temperatures. Carambolim Lake, Goa

  • Spectacular artificial lake;
  • Observation towers;
  • Lots of wildlife;
  • Woodland walks.

Why it’s awesome: Situated in North Goa, the beautiful Carambolim Lake is one of Goa’s most attractive lakes. The artificial fish-filled lake is surrounded by verdant forest and it’s a great place to spot a variety of birds, both land- and water-based and both permanent and migratory. The lake was initially built to help provide irrigation for the nearby rice fields. When birds started to be drawn to the area steps were taken to preserve and enhance the lake in order to provide a suitable place for birdlife to flourish. The views are scenic and the atmosphere is peaceful. In the right company, it’s a great place for romance when visiting Goa.

What to do there: Break away from the busier attractions in Goa and enjoy a sense of calm and tranquillity at the scenic Carambolim Lake. Take a stroll around the lily-covered lake and admire the various flora, such as water hyacinths and Indian marsh snowflakes, that paint bursts of colour onto the scenery. Go rambling through the woodlands and look out for birds like hawk owls and jungle owlets and spot species like moorhens, water hens, herons, egrets, swallows, and coots in and around the water. Climb the watchtowers for sweeping views.

Why it’s awesome: The Museum of Christian Art is one of the top points of Interest in Goa for anyone interested in religious history. Found in the heart of the old city, the museum is housed in the former Santa Monica Convent, itself a historic and attractive building of interest. A fairly unique museum in Asia, it contains a huge selection of Christian artefacts, art, and sacred objects from various times throughout history. Many pieces were exquisitely made by local craftspeople and artisans. Interestingly, most of these artists were Hindu. Established in 1994, the museum seeks to showcase Indo-Portuguese Christian art collected from Goa’s places of worship.

What to do there: Appreciate the fine building from outside before entering the museum to admire the vast collections of art and antiquities. The mobile mass kit is interesting—it was used by priests when travelling to outlying towns and villages to perform religious ceremonies.

Note how many of the pieces have slight Indian and Hindu influences, caused by local artists injecting their own ideas and techniques into their work. There are paintings and sculptures of Jesus Christ and various saints, beautiful chalices, items set with precious gems and metals, plates used in mass, wooden carvings, crucifixes, rosary beads, church furnishings, and more.
