Voyager Balloons Cappadocia Review – Is it Worth it in 2023?

F loating in a hot air balloon has always been on my travel bucket list . That doesn’t mean I was thrilled to check it off. Those that have been in a hot air balloon clearly know that this is crazy talk however I am sure there are some, like my girlfriend, who don’t love to fly and can relate. Let me clarify. I love to fly . I grew up in small bush planes flying around northern Canada. Turbulence and rough landings are nothing new to me. Being in a wicker basket held by a sack of hot air and at the mercy of the wind is another story. So when the opportunity came up to float high above Cappadocia with Voyager Balloons, I had my hesitations.

Still, daring pilots have floated in the skies for over 200 years and hot air ballooning is THE thing to do in Cappadocia. The latter, of course, piqued my fear of missing out. The more I read about it and the more pictures I saw online the more excited I got. I spoke with people who have gone and they had all said what an incredible experience it is. Even Erin’s own mother whose basket tipped while landing said how peaceful it was – before falling out of course. When the day finally arrived I was pumped. Taking to the skies with Voyager Balloons, one of the best operators in all of Cappadocia only amplified this excitement.

The Voyager Balloons Experience

The pick-up was bright and early from our hotel. We made our way to the Voyager Balloon shop where we were fed a light breakfast. Never float on an empty stomach? The friendly staff went over various waiver forms while we watched incredibly high-definition footage of what we were about to experience. Seriously, their time-lapse video is spectacular…and available on their website. I will wait here while you check it out…

With that, we signed our waivers and headed to the takeoff site. We passed countless other vehicles hauling baskets and vans shuttling passengers about to do the same thing as we were. This really brought home how popular hot air ballooning in Cappadocia has become. With so many tour companies taking to the sky how do you know your experience is going to stand out? With so many operators in Cappadocia, I had to ask,

What makes Voyager Balloons different?

You would think 16 years of experience and is one of TripAdvisor’s top-rated activities in Cappadocia would say it all. To fill in any gaps or uncertainties I went up for a closer look.

We arrived at the take off-site to find organized chaos – ground crews from several companies rushing to get their balloons in the air all at once. The scene was frantic although it could have been the Turkish coffee . We were somewhat hurried to get off the ground which is a shame as watching the swarm of balloons lifting off at sunrise was spectacular. Of course, I was free to return any morning to capture the moment from the ground and I briefly lied to myself saying I would do just that.

We Shot up like a Balloon.

Before we knew it we were high above Cappadocia – and I mean high. Much higher than expected which gave us an incredibly peaceful view of the entire valley. I think Erin opened her eyes long enough to get a glimpse of it. There we were magically floating in an unreal setting with only the “ oohs ” and “ aahs ” of a group of Koreans to break the serenity that is hot air ballooning. That and the sudden bursts of flame, which is actually quite rhythmic and oddly fitting with our surroundings. Oh, and warm. So very warm . The heat was welcomed though as it cut through the cool spring air making the extra layers I added completely unnecessary.

It was the perfect day for a flight – clear blue skies and uncharacteristically warm winter weather which resulted in amazing views. We drifted high above Cappadocia and its odd rock formations. We got unobstructed views of the Göreme open-air museum as well as caves carved out of hills, pigeon mansions, and Mt. Erciyes – the highest peak in Cappadocia. Seeing this wild landscape dotted with hot air balloons is a wonderful thing. Words really cannot describe how amazing this moment was. Thankfully I took lots of pictures:

Voyager Balloons – Professionalism Above Cappadocia

You could see in the pilot’s faces and smiles that they genuinely loved flying these balloons. This is pretty impressive if you think about it – the company operates year-round, almost every day. Tip of the hat for keeping the love burning. Not only was it clear that the pilots love their jobs , (a key factor when placing your safety in someone’s hands!) it was clear that they know what they are doing.

Halis and his co-pilot maneuvered the massive balloon with ridiculous precision , in ways I didn’t think were possible while being pushed around by the wind. Any hot air balloon fears were put to rest when we navigated the peaks and valleys of Cappadocia with ease. We were up and over rock formations as if we were bouncing on a trampoline and were so close to the Fairy Chimneys that you could reach out and touch them. Impressive to say the least.

Bonus flight

While all the other balloons were landing we were still flying high above Cappadocia and the Rose Valley for one last peak. Then the wind stopped. The result? An extra 30 minutes or so waiting for the right conditions to bring us down. This meant 30 more minutes to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Obviously, no one was complaining.

When we finally did come down we were presented with a flute (or two depending on your nerves) of celebratory champagne – which is just that. A toast has become a tradition after hot air balloon flights as a playful way to say “ you made it .” Jokes or not it was a welcomed drink and was the perfect way to cap an amazing experience . Nothing like a little alcohol to boost that already spiking adrenaline!

After being handed a flight certificate and pre-flight photo that really captured the fear in some of the passenger’s eyes, it was time to head back to our hotel. Halis was kind enough to personally drop us off. This allowed me to get a better idea of what makes Voyager Balloons the best of the best. Again his passion for being the safest and top operator in town was evident and even inspiring. He explained how he was working towards regulations in a surprisingly unregulated industry.

An example of this is his help in implementing communication systems between balloons. This is not only with his balloons, but all balloons in the air. This has allowed pilots to share weather conditions, current location, and planned routes – or as much as you can plan when the wind suddenly changes direction. Halis also explained the history of hot air ballooning in Cappadocia and gave the background on how it became so popular, and he should know. Halis has not only been flying balloons for over a decade but teaching others as well. His knowledge and love of the area he was born and raised in only reaffirmed my conclusion that this is the safest and best hot air balloon company in Cappadocia.

So, Is Voyager Balloons Worth it?

Overall it was an amazing experience and I can not think of a better way to see Cappadocia. I would NEVER HESITATE again to go hot air ballooning…at least not above Cappadocia…with Voyager Balloons. If you are heading to Cappadocia obviously make a hot air balloon ride part of your trip. For their professionalism, love of their craft, and commitment to making the air above Cappadocia safer for all, consider flying with Voyager Balloons. "Our aim is to provide the most unique and satisfying hot-air balloon flight experience over Cappadocia," says Mr M. Halis Aydoğan, the owner of the company who is also Voyager's multi-lingual, highly experienced  balloon pilot , along with Mr Hakan Yıldız.

"Operated in our medium-sized 20-passenger balloon, we take no more than 16 passengers on this flight so that passengers can enjoy more personal space and freedom to move around for photographs, videos, and the view," Mr Aydoğan says. A licensed tour guide, he is one of the most experienced hot-air balloon pilots in Cappadocia, having learned ballooning from Lars-Erik Möre and Kaili Kidner, the originators of hot-air ballooning here. Mr Hakan Yıldız, also very experienced, is the other Ultra Comfort Flight pilot.

"Our advantage is that both Hakan and I speak fluent English and we know Cappadocia intimately. This is exceptionally important because a balloon flight here is not just time in the sky. It's the best opportunity to learn about Cappadocia, its landscape, culture, history, traditions, agriculture—anything you see from the sky. Hub City Hot Air Balloon Festival taking riders to new heights

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Fun was on the rise Saturday at the Forrest County Multipurpose Center for the 2024 Hub City Hot Air Balloon Festival.

The festival opened Friday and wrapped up Saturday.

Each night included live music, food trucks and of course, tethered hot air balloon rides and a hot air balloon glow.

A hot air balloon pilot said most people who were afraid of their first ride, reached new heights this weekend.

“It’s funny, because I get a lot of people that say they’re afraid of heights when they come” balloonist Fred Poole said. “And I say, ‘No, no, I got you. Don’t worry about it,’ and within five, ten minutes, most people are really comfortable in the basket because it’s not anything like they thought it would be.

“Because you’re moving with the wind. So, really, everything’s still. Not shaking around, not rock and rolling until maybe the landing. If that goes well, it shouldn’t be either.”

A portion of the proceeds from the festival benefitted the Pink Ribbon Fund of Hattiesburg.

Colorado news | here’s what that white jellyfish-like balloon over denver was doing, “it’s the weirdest thing i’ve ever seen in my life”.

It was carrying NASA instruments that measure solar radiation in the stratosphere, data that can help keep aerospace crews safe.

The company World View Enterprises on Saturday in Arizona launched the remotely run craft that can travel between 45,000 and 75,000 feet elevation, relying on solar arrays hanging off the bottom of the balloon and tilting toward the sun for power.

The operators will fly this machine — called a Gryphon Stratolite — north of the 40th parallel to gather data for NASA as part of that agency’s program for measuring solar radiation levels, World Enterprises spokesman Phil Wocken said, confirming a flight path over metro Denver.

In the mountains west of Denver near Black Hawk, Myron Zeleznik, 80, a retired sheet metal worker and general aviation pilot, watched for hours from his house at 9,200 feet elevation. “It’s white. It looks like a balloon on top of a balloon,” Zeleznik said.

“It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said, admitting he was worried.

“I’ve launched in hot air balloons, so I know what they look like. This doesn’t look like a hot air balloon, because it doesn’t have a basket.”

He called 911 when he saw it Friday morning.

The NASA instruments use sensors to measure solar radiation — data that can be used to improve aerospace safety by estimating radiation doses and dose rates along flight tracks, Wocken said. Nasa scientific balloon takes flight with student-built payloads.

NASA’s Scientific Balloon Program’s fifth balloon mission of the 2024 fall campaign took flight Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, from the agency’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. The HASP 1.0 (High-Altitude Student Platform) mission remained in flight over 11 hours before it safely touched down. Recovery is underway.

HASP is a partnership among the Louisiana Space Grant Consortium , the Astrophysics Division of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, and the agency’s Balloon Program Office and Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility. The HASP platform supports up to 12 student-built payloads and is designed to flight test compact satellites, prototypes, and other small experiments. Since 2006, HASP has engaged more than 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students involved in the missions.

Teams participating in the 2024 HASP 1.0 flight included: University of North Florida and University of North Dakota; Arizona State University; Louisiana State University; University of Colorado Boulder; College of the Canyons; Fort Lewis College; Capitol Technical College; University of Arizona; Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (Peru); and McMaster University (Canada).

A new, larger version of the High-Altitude Student Platform (HASP 2.0) had its engineering test flight a few days prior. HASP 2.0 will be able to accommodate twice as many student experiments as HASP 1.0 once operational in the next year.

The remaining three balloon flights scheduled for the 2024 Fort Sumner fall campaign await next launch opportunities. To follow the missions, visit NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility website for real-time updates on balloons altitudes and GPS locations during flight.

HOW HOT AIR BALLOONS WORK?

Warmer air rises in cooler air. This is because hot air is lighter than cool air as it has less mass per unit of volume. Mass can be defined by the measure of how much matter something contains. The actual balloon (referred to as the envelope) has to be so large as it takes such a large amount of heated air to lift it off the ground.

By heating the air inside the balloon with the burner, it becomes lighter than the cooler air on the outside, causing the balloon to float upwards. To land, the air inside is allowed to cool meaning the balloon slowly begins to descend. An altimeter (to measure altitude), a rate-of-climb meter, and an envelope temperature gauge are the only instruments used in the balloon. Amazingly, the pilot can control the altitude of the balloon within a matter of a few feet !

If the pilot wants to move in a particular direction they simply ascend and descend to the appropriate level and ride with the wind. This is however limited to the variation in wind direction on the flight day.

The envelope is made of reinforced nylon fabric called as hyperlast. It is very light (1.3 ounces per square yard) but very strong (125 pounds per square inch). The envelope is treated with a polyurethane coating to make it more airtight and to help the fabric withstand the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The pilot and passengers ride in a basket that is made of woven wicker, which is both strong and flexible. The basket is connected to the envelope by stainless steel suspension cables.

Our balloons range from a pilot plus two passenger up to pilot plus 24 passengers at most. On a standard flight you will be joining a group of other people. All our hot air balloon baskets have foot-holes to help you climb in and out, but if you feel you may need a little more assistance, our crew members will happily help. Our hot air balloon baskets are divided into compartments for your safety, and larger balloon baskets are sectioned into four passenger compartments with lots of room in each.

There are 2 main types of basket, Open and T-partition. Open is obviously an open space where the passengers, pilot and fuel are all housed in the basket in just 1 compartment and T-partition is where the basket is split into sections so the passengers can be separated from the pilot and canisters.

Paris 2024 throws epic party to bid adieu to summer of unforgettable Games

Over the last 11 days Paris has celebrated, clapped, risen in standing ovations, cried and fell silent in awe. On Sunday (8 September), at the Closing Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games , Paris was ready to party.

The 64,000-capacity Stade de France was packed as people gathered to say a final farewell to the summer of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the French capital.

It was the first Paralympic Summer Games the country has ever hosted and the expectations were high, especially after a tough previous Paralympic cycle under Covid-19 restrictions. Paris 2024 lived up to the hype with dazzling athletic performances at iconic venues , ground-breaking ceremonies in front of packed stands , a record number of participating National Paralympic Committees and the first-ever medals for the Paralympic Refugee Team .

If revolution was the theme of the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paralympics, after a week and a half of action across 22 sports , there was only one more call to make – to enjoy and celebrate the achievements of the 4,400 athletes from 169 delegations who competed at the Games.

"We were all in heaven. And while these emotions may have been fleeting, the memory of this historic summer will remain with us forever," Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet said in his closing speech.

"The Paris 2024 Games are coming to an end, but their message is staying with us. Just like the athletes who have inspired us so much, just like the men and women who pushed all the limits to make these Games a success, let's keep trying, keep failing and keep getting back up again.

"Let's keep doing, let's keep believing, and above all... let's keep daring ."

Santa opened the final ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games with Johnny Hallyday’s classic "Vivre pour le Meilleur".

Notes of farewell: From trumpets and orchestras to electronic music extravaganza

Music was at the heart of the final Paris 2024 ceremony. Leaping between styles and decades, from Johnny Hallyday to Jean-Michel Jarre , the performances in the Stade de France were an unpredictable and unmatched tribute to French culture and its role in the international music scene.

It was also a beautiful showcase of musicians with disabilities.

Andre Feydy , who is missing his right arm below the elbow, kept the spectators spellbound with his clean, trumpet solo of L a Marseillaise . Standing alone on stage in a blue beret, wings painted in the tricolour affixed to his back, Feydy's notes rang out over the stands, at first in silence but then as if on cue the stands began to sing the national anthem in unison with the brass instrument.

The stands would continue singing along for the rest of the joyful night, eagerly picking up Joe Dassin 's "Champs-Elysees" - an already iconic song that developed a new legacy during the summer of 2024 when it was heard throughout the Paris 2024 venues - and Desireless' "Voyage, Voyage" .

If music was the star of the show, dance was the visual portrayal of it with B-Boys and B-Girls taking centre stage with DJ Cut Killer , a pioneer of hip-hop in France, setting the beat. Breaking made its first Olympic appearance at Paris 2024, but at the Closing Ceremony there was an exciting twist - among the eight dancers were some with disabilities, performing gravity-defying tricks that got the stands dancing as well.

B-Boys and B-Girls, some with disabilities, took centre stage during the Closing Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Even the athletes could not stand still. As international classics, like Gloria Gaynor 's "I Will Survive" came over the loudspeakers during the Parade of the Flags of the Nations, the athletes watching from their seats forgot the formalities and formed a long conga line made up of representatives of different delegations and snaked through the Stade de France, drawing more athletes in with every turn.

More than 5,800 athletes and accompanying staff were at the stadium, the setting for so many jubilant Para athletics moments during the Games.

"These Games have been fabulous," said one of the biggest heroes of the purple track, Cuba's Omara Durand , who completed a clean sweep of three gold medals to end a remarkable career spanning five Paralympic Games. "I've enjoyed them to the maximum, and I'll continue to do so until the last bit of applause from the crowd."

There was much more applause - as well as singing and dancing - to follow.

The athletes sang along with "California Dreamin'" as the Paralympic flag was passed from Paris 2024 to the host of the next Paralympic Games, Los Angeles 2028 , and gladly joined the rave party that followed as 24 French DJs took over Stade de France for an epic marathon of electronic music - including a surprise inclusion of Daft Punk 's "One More Time" .

Flagbearers carried the flags of the 169 delegations who took part in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

The flying cauldron rises to the sky for the last time

Before the party started in earnest, however, there was a sad goodbye to be said.

The Paralympic Flame arrived at the Stade de France, carried by the captain of France's victorious blind football team Frederic Villeroux , as French duo Amadou & Mariam performed the Serge Gainsbourg classic, “Je suis venu te dire que je m’en vais” [I have come here to tell you that I am going].

The spectators followed the moving flicker of the lantern as it passed from one Paralympic athlete to another until arriving in the hands of three-time Paris 2024 champion in Para cycling road Mathieu Bosredon and France’s first Paralympic boccia champion Aurelie Aubert .

Together they blew out the flame and, as they did, the flame in the hot-air balloon cauldron suspended in the air over the Tuileries Garden went out at the same time.

The rain continued to pour down, as if reminding of the change of seasons, and with a new start ahead, the road ahead was clear to embark on the revolutionary promise made at the Place de la Concorde 12 days ago.

"We all have a collective responsibility to use the momentum of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games to make the world around us more inclusive," said International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons . "What a Paralympic legacy this would be, not just for these athletes, but the world’s 1.3 billion persons with disabilities that they represent.

"Beyond 12 days of sport, we must break down the barriers that exist in society. We must enable and empower persons with disabilities to excel outside of the field of play, in education, in employment, in entertainment, in government, in civil society – everywhere!

"Diversity and difference should not divide us. Diversity and difference should unite us, drive change and make this planet better for everyone."
