Jon Spencer announces headline solo tour and premieres new single I Got The Hits

The Blues Explosion leader will play 7 dates in the UK and Europe following his live shows with Melvins - check out new track I Got The Hits

Jon Spencer has announced a run of solo headline shows for November.

The Blues Explosion leader will play seven dates in the UK and Europe following his tour with Melvins and his previously announced headline show in Glasgow in October.

The dates have been scheduled in support of his upcoming album Spencer Sings The Hits! , which will arrive on November 2 via In The Red Records.

Spencer says: “I can't wait to get over and play for everyone. I will be joined by Bob Bert, Sam Coomes and M. Sord – we will be kicking out all of the new long-player Spencer Sings The Hits! as well as some choice cuts from Pussy Galore, The Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash, and maybe even a super-secret cover-song or two. 

“We just did a stint in the States with the Melvins so I know from experience that these will be some dynamite nights of rock, roll, riot, and rumble.”

To mark the announcement, Spencer has released a stream of his new single I Got The Hits , which can be listened to below.

I saw the Blues Explosion a couple of years ago, and it was one of the best concerts I've ever attended, utterly infectious skewed rock n roll that had me screaming.

But this time around with the "Hitmakers", he's touring a very weak albums of songs that don't have the reckless feel of classic Blues Explosion but rather a thrown-off feel. The freedom Tower album - the last with thew actual Blues Explosion - of a few years ago was a very good album, doing the legacy proud. But the Hitmakers one gives nothing much for Spencer and the band to build on in concert.

The players he's with have no character at all unlike the wild, but focussed-as-one unit, which is the Blues Explosion. They just seem like nobodies Spencer's picked up, a pick-up band.

I can't believe it after the brilliant Blues Explosion concert that got me totally fired up, but I left the Hitmakers concert before the end.

Live, John Spencer never disappoints. This line up is perfect for him to groove out in his edgy rocking way. He belts out song after song with riffs that make you move and once in a while even throws in some social commentary. He’ a smart guy who knows how to reach your pelvis. Love him. Bob Bert adds the right raunchy accents and is fun to watch as he assaults a giant gas tank with hammers. I was lucky enough to be here when Julie Caffritz joined in for the encores with a “fuck you” like only she can deliver. Don’t miss them if they land in your neck of the woods.

I have been a fan since mid nineties. Just wanted you to know that your unique, bad ass sound has always impressed me. Thank God you guys are still kicking it. I'm a musician who retired in 2009 because of an evil succubus spawn of Satan. I am getting back into the scene again and hope to someday kick it with you cool mfn cats. Thanks for your bad ass off the wall charts that compare to no other. Jon Spencer blues explosion, unlike no other. Thank you

Jon Spencer and the HITmakers were great! Lots of energy, though the show was a little shorter than I had hoped or expected. Awesome version of the JSBX song Dang and a cool cover of Modern Lovers' Roadrunner, too.

JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION – JAN ’11

Blues explosion.

“Energy means sweat and sweat means action and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (The Blues Explosion!!! or JSBX to you) wants everyone to take that, rub it all over and spread the word.”

Anybody who witnessed  The Jon Spencer Blues Explosio n on their first visit to Australia and New Zealand in the early nineties as support to US hipster Beck, would have seen a man – a band – seemingly possessed with the spirit of everything great rock ‘n’ roll has to offer. A flat out garage attack of diamond riffs, snarled vocals, blues hollering, the funky drummer beats and tunes you can actually dance and/or fuck to. Not surprisingly they shattered Beck and co into a thousand tiny pieces.

An explosive appearance on Saturday morning TV show Recovery followed (catch the evidence  here ), cementing their reputation, and saw the  JSBX return for subsequent sold out headline tours and two guest appearances on the travelling Big Day Out circus, the most recent, in 2005, being the last visit to our respective shores.

Yes, it has been a long time between drinks and squealing theremins but  The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion are finally heading back down-under appearing at the Sydney and MoNA/FOMA Festivals and at most major cities including Melbourne where  JSBX will perform Orange, their third and arguably most essential album, in its entirety.

Orange was the soundtrack for a lot of shenanigans at various parties back in the day. It even made me wanna shake my ass like a mofo, which is really saying something. Listening back to it now, it still makes me wanna let it all hang out in my rockin’ chair. I honestly forgot how dirty, raw and dang good this is.  In fact, I’m naming it my second Forgotten Gem. VERDICT: TURN IT UP, rip off your shirt, mess up your fucking fauxhawk, wannabe, and howl at the moon like you mean it! – YOURZENMINE

All festival shows are  on-sale now with all club show sales to open at 9.00am  November 16th.

The band starts at 11 and stays there. The band played an hour-long set, then returned for almost thirty minutes of encores. In the course of the show, the band tore through many favourites including “Afro”, “Blues X  Man”, 2Kindsa love”, “Calvin”, ”Chicken Dog” , “Fuck Shit Up”, “Mars, Arizona”, and of course “Bellbottoms.” –  Notes From Underground 2010
