However, it lacks the laid-back, old-world charm of San Antonio.

30 Best Day Trips From Fort Worth

If you live in Fort Worth or just visiting Cowtown, there are lots of places you can go and visit on a day trip out of the city.

We've got day trips to nature parks, waterfalls, lakes and rivers, historical town squares and buildings, markets, flower gardens, amazing cities and a whole lot more!

The day trips are ordered from closest to furthest away from Fort Worth. Most will take 2 hours or less to get there, but we've got a few slightly further out options if you're feeling adventurous!

1. Go wine tasting in Grapevine

30 minutes from Fort Worth (23 miles)

The town of Grapevine is the closest of our list of 30 to Fort Worth and opens up the list as a result. Only half an hour from downtown Fort Worth and right next to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, you'll feel a lot further away when you get there.

On the edge of the city there are a few wineries which you can visit or you can go to one of the tasting rooms in Grapevine itself. Although it is only half an hour, you might want to stay over to avoid having to nominate a designated driver or get a cab instead.

This wine region may not be as well known as California and Oregon or even the Texas Wine Country further south, but don't knock it until you've tried it and stay for dinner to get the most out of your day trip.

If you want your dinner to come with a little more entertainment and a slight touch of kitsch, the Jazz Wine Train that runs along the 1920s Grapevine Vintage Railroad offers the same wine and dinner combo with a twist.

Don't miss out on walking through the town of Grapevine itself. There's some great shops & things to see other than wine here too!

2. Drive up the road for a day in Dallas

35 minutes from Fort Worth (32 miles)

Fort Worth's bigger brother is only a short drive up the road and we couldn't not include it on our list as although you may well have been to Dallas a few times already, it's well worth visiting more than once.

There is so much to see and do in Dallas that you can take day trips for weeks and not cover all of it. If you want to spend more time, a long weekend will give you a lot more opportunity to explore the city.

The Sixth Floor Museum and Dealey Plaza are a good place to start. Although they relate to a grim part of the local history, the poignant museum is really interesting and you can look out of the window from which the shot was made with a white X marking the spot.

If you like art, the Meadows Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art should be on your list. Add to that some great parks and walks through the cattle statues on Pioneer Plaza and along the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge over Trinity River.

To get the ultimate view of Dallas, stay until the evening and book the Five Sixty restaurant that is located... you guessed it - 560 feet up in the air at the top of Reunion Tower. A table by the window will give you a 360 degree view as the restaurant slowly rotates as you eat.

3. Visit the historic city of Denton, Texas

40 minutes from Fort Worth (37 miles)

Denton is a short drive up the I-35W from Fort Worth - the city sits at the point where the two spurs of the Interstate merge into one and the I-35 then heads north to Oklahoma and Kansas.

The I-35W can get pretty busy in the morning rush hour so don't spend the 20-30 minutes sat still on the highway and have breakfast in Fort Worth first. Then get on the road at around 9:30 a.m. and you'll still have virtually the whole day to explore Denton.

Right in the middle of Denton is the Courthouse-on-the-Square. Dating back to 1896, it literally is a giant courthouse building on Denton Square.

Head inside to find a museum about Denton's history and culture going back to the first settlers and focusing a lot on the different immigrant groups that made Denton their home.

After you've walked around the small downtown and had your lunch at one of the restaurants along Hickory Street, take your pick of the Clear Creek Heritage Center (closer) and Ray Roberts Lake State Park (further away) for an afternoon walk in nature.

Both have good gentle hiking trails but Ray Roberts adds to the woods with pretty coves and a beach on the lake and wild deer if you don't mind the extra driving.

4. See classic aircraft at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum

50 minutes from Fort Worth (40 miles)

If you or your kids like airplanes, the Cavanaugh Flight Museum is just north of Dallas sitting in the grounds of Addison Airport.

The main collection here has military aircraft starting with World War I and progressing through to all the other major conflicts during the 20th century. Some of the displays sit inside a hangar while others can be seen outside.

For those with a geek gene, you can check out some unique aircraft engines as part of the display where you can track the way their design changed and improved over time.

Random as it may seem, alongside the airplanes, the museum has a small selection of vintage cars from the 30s and 40s that inexplicably sit right among the airplane collection. Not that I object as I love classic motors, but it does seem unusual!

If you book in advance, you can make use of the museum's location right next to a landing strip and go for a flight in one of the classic fighter or bomber planes. It'll definitely make your day and there's nothing like climbing aboard a bomber plane that is almost 80 years old!

5. Walk through the Windmill Farm at Tolar

55 minutes from Fort Worth (44 miles)

Just about an hour out of Fort Worth along Highway 377 is one of the more unusual options for a day trip - the Windmill Farm near Tolar.

Just a short way off the highway, the farm is free to enter, but I really recommend you donate for the upkeep as you enter. Pick up a leaflet once you've paid your dues and follow the road through the park.

The Windmill Farm has about 30 classic restored windmills that have been aggregated from various local farms and ranches. Each one has a story to tell and has been meticulously restored to work exactly as it did when it was brand new.

The farm is generally open every day during daylight hours. You can see most of the windmills from the road, but you'll have a much better experience if you park up and take a walk through the park to see them up close and personal.

6. Go to the historic town of McKinney

1 hour from Fort Worth (57 miles)

If you don't know much about McKinney, you're not alone. This town that is just outside the metro area is small and unassuming at first sight, but look closer and you'll find exactly why you should go.

Money Magazine voted it the Best Place to Live in America in 2014 and it is frequently rated in the top 10s by other publications. Why? The town is known for a great local community, a vibrant vibe and a focus on work life balance.

These accolades haven't gone unnoticed and McKinney has become a popular relocation destination for those seeking to get more from life. In 2019 the U.S. Census Bureau had McKinney as the 6th fastest growing city in the United States.

Start your visit by walking down Main Street. You'll find quirky local shops and great places to stop for a coffee or lunch in buildings that date back to the late 1800s.

Head on over to the Historic Downtown and you'll discover more charm and history. A few blocks further south is the Chestnut Square Historic Village where 10 restored historic buildings dating as far back as 1854 are open to visitors and costumed actors will help explain what life was like in McKinney 150 years ago.

7. See prehistoric footprints in the Dinosaur Valley State Park

1 hour from Fort Worth (58 miles)

Dinosaur Valley State Park is an hour to the southwest of Fort Worth - allow for up to 15-20 minutes on top of your journey time if you're heading out during the morning rush hour.

The park is not one of the largest, but it has some very pretty wooded terrain with small streams running into the Paluxy River and a number of well laid out hiking trails that criss-cross the park.

The hiking is very good as it is, but to add to the experience, Dinosaur Valley State Park has some of the best preserved dinosaur footprints in the world - some are in the rocks surrounding the river and others run along the river bed, although you can see them through the water.

The thick clay through which the dinosaurs walked turned to stone over millions of years and you can go and see and even touch these footprints today.

Don't miss stopping in Glen Rose - the nearest town to the park. It's a small charming Texan town complete with a courthouse building on Historic Courthouse Square in the middle that was built in 1893.

8. Explore the historic homes of Terrell

1 hour 5 minutes from Fort Worth (68 miles)

Terrell is a town on the east side of Dallas and you'll need to drive around the Big D to get there - your fastest option is to take the I-20 which will take you right to the outskirts of Terrell.

The small town is known for 2 main things: its historic buildings that come with in-depth plaques describing what their significance and ghosts.

The historic buildings are primarily located in the historic downtown area and interspersed with murals painted on building walls and some very bizarre local shops.

If you drive over on a Saturday, there is an official guided ghost walk which will tell you the history of the ghosts that live around town. If that gets you interested, you can sign up for a weekend themed event at Thrillvania Haunted House Park which hosts ghost-based experiences in haunted mansions.

The small town is also home to the No. 1 British Flying Training School. This is a museum on the site where the British RAF (air force) pilots trained during the Second World War before going into battle. There's some really interesting things to look at giving you a glimpse of what life was like in the camp during the war.

9. Relax by the water at Lake Whitney

1 hour 10 minutes from Fort Worth (72 miles)

Just over an hour south of Fort Worth is Lake Whitney, a reservoir formed along Brazos River behind Whitney Dam constructed in the 50s.

The large man-made lake is a perfect spot for spending time on the water and around it with more activities than you can do in a day.

On the lake you can do everything from fishing for bass and catfish (with a license) or boating to water skiing and even scuba diving.

There are parks dotted all around the perimeter of the lake - McCown Valley Park, Cedar Creek Park, Steele Creek Park, Steiner Valley Park, Old Fort Park and the Lake Whitney State Park.

The State Park is the most popular with visitors - it's got two short official trails that are about a mile long each and at weekends the park becomes popular with campers staying the night.

The largely unspoiled nature around the lake has become so popular that in 2005 the Texas legislators saw it fit to officially designate Lake Whitney as the Getaway Capital of Texas. I am not sure exactly what legal privileges that gives to the lake, but it's a cool title!

10. Get a history lesson at the Fort Richardson State Park and Historic Site

1 hour 10 minutes from Fort Worth (60 miles)

To learn a bit about the history of 19th century Texas, you'll need to drive from one fort to the next. Head out from Fort Worth along State Highway 199 (that starts right in downtown) and stay on it for just shy of 60 miles until you see a sign telling you that Fort Richardson is to your left.

Built in 1867, Fort Richardson was a frontier outpost as settlers occupied more territories in northern Texas and pushed back the Comanche and Kiowa tribes.

The fort served its purpose as by 1878, the Texas panhandle and parts of today's Oklahoma were secured by the U.S. Army and the post was abandoned for almost 100 years.

It was not until the 1970s that the disused ruin was partially restored as a piece of national heritage and reopened as the Richardson State Historic Park.

The fort is spread out through the park grounds and the 55 buildings have been restored to open the fort to visitors. The hospital and morgue buildings are very popular and there is everything from the magazine building to the officers' quarters as well as 2 replica soldier barrack buildings to complete the restoration.

If you get here early, the first tour starts at 10 a.m. on weekdays. The second one is not until 2 p.m. so it pays to get out of Fort Worth in the morning.

The park that surrounds the Historic Site is great for an afternoon stroll after you've seen the fort itself. There are some great trails that are relatively easy to walk - a $3 entrance fee covers both, the fort and the park which is amazing value for a day trip from Fort Worth.

11. Try your luck at the largest casino in the world

1 hour 10 minutes from Fort Worth (75 miles)

Just across the border into Oklahoma, north of Fort Worth is the WinStar World Casino. If you're not heard of it before and think that a local casino owned by the southern Oklahoma Chickasaw Nation is not going to tick the boxes, think again.

With around 600,000 square feet of casino floor space, the WinStar is the largest casino in the world. It beats everything you'll find along the Las Vegas strip, Atlantic City and even the huge casinos in places like Macau.

Texas is a pretty conservative state and therefore casinos aren't coming to Fort Worth any time soon. This is precisely why WinStar exists - reportedly over 90% of the visitors are residents of the Dallas - Fort Worth metro area who head up for a day at the tables.

Whatever game you like playing in the casino, there will be a crazy amount of options for you. The poker room alone has 55 tables and occasionally hosts huge multi-table tournaments.

If you want to stay for the evening, there are many good restaurants on site and for those who like to play through the night, the hotel on top of the casino has almost 1,500 rooms!

12. Buy antiques at the Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco

1 hour 20 minutes from Fort Worth (89 miles)

If you like antique furniture, design in general or just want a fun day out going through quirky stalls and shops, Waco is less than 90 minutes south of Fort Worth.

Take the I-35W from right outside downtown Fort Worth and follow it all the way, along the I-35 after the merger with the Dallas-bound I-35E and you will get right into the heart of Waco without having to make a single turn!

Magnolia Market has become the main sight in Waco. It's easy to find - the two giant old silos are the thing to look out for. The market was set up and is owned by Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper TV show fame.

Not content with the selection of antiques and general interesting furniture, they've gone and made Waco the place to come for buying classic pieces. They have stopped filming the show to focus on family and their other businesses so you might just spot them on your way around.

Don't miss the 3-floor Dr Pepper museum which is also based in Waco. The museum occupies the first purpose-built factory building where Dr Pepper was produced for over 50 years up to 1960. From cool advertising posters to classic bottle designs, there is a lot to see and it's a great way to follow the development of industry through time.

13. Get that small town feel in Greenville, Texas

1 hour 25 minutes from Fort Worth (83 miles)

If you want to visit a small relaxed town that is a little way off the beaten track and spend a day walking through local streets, seeing some historic houses and learning a bit about the town's history, Greenville, Texas is that town.

To get to Greenville from Fort Worth, the fastest route is to take the I-30 that runs right through Dallas. Even during the morning rush hour, you're likely to take 10 to 15 minutes longer trying to bypass downtown Dallas and going north.

Greenville's historic downtown is not quite as fancy as McKinney (#6 above), but there's a number of buildings on the National Historic register with plaques outside telling you about their significance. The city was founded in 1852 and some buildings do date back to the 19th century.

The Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum is worth a stop - the unusual museum combines an exhibit about Audie Murphy, who was the most decorated American soldier in the Second World War, with a display about the history of the local cotton industry.

The combination of medals, uniforms and World War II memorabilia and a poignant section telling about the life of settlers and slaves in a classic Texan cotton plantation does seem odd but it somehow just about works.

14. Get a bargain at the world's largest flea market in Canton

1 hour 25 minutes from Fort Worth (94 miles)

If shopping for random trinkets, a super rare first edition vinyl or a car part that the manufacturer stopped producing 20 years ago is the kind of thing that makes a day out extra special, the First Monday Trade Days flea market in Canton will serve you up a treat.

The market sets up once a month over the weekend that comes before the first Monday of the month - sometimes this means it comes right at the end of the month or at the beginning depending on how that Monday falls.

Running from Thursday to Sunday, the 100 acre site has a mix of stalls, semi-permanent stores and entire pavilions. Over 6,000 traders come to sell you everything from handmade arts and crafts to 1960s TV sets.

This is the place where one man's attic junk becomes another's treasure all the time!

First Monday Trade Days is officially the largest flea market in the United States and (depending on your definitions) the world and so if there's something you're looking to buy, no matter how rare, you'll probably find somebody here selling it.

15. Go for a scenic drive around Lake Murray in Oklahoma

1 hour 30 minutes from Fort Worth (97 miles)

Another very simple drive, the way to get to Lake Murray from Fort Worth is almost identical to that for Waco, except you have to keep driving north rather than south along the I-35 until you reach Marietta. Lake Murray is just a few miles off the highway from there.

For those who like to spend the day on the water, every option is available here from paddle boarding and kayaking to fishing. Off the water, there's ATV trails, the option to go horseback riding, a full golf course and a mini golf if you don't want to spend 4 hours playing.

The best reason to come up to Lake Murray is the road that loops all the way around - Highway 77S. It's 25 miles long and has a number of smaller roads coming off it to explore the State Park and various lakeside coves and woods.

It's definitely worth it doing the full circle in the afternoon before heading back to see the lake from every angle.

Given my obsession with perfect driving roads and road trips, I may be a little biased, but you can make stops all the way along - there's the Lake Murray Beach, the Marina, Tucker Tower (you should climb to the top for a good view) and lots of places to park up and small campgrounds.

16. Marvel at the architecture in Sulphur Springs, Texas

1 hour 45 minutes from Fort Worth (111 miles)

If you jump on the I-30 heading east and keep going for just under 2 hours, you'll come to Sulphur Springs about 20 miles after Greenville (#13 above). In fact, if you set off early, you might want to combine the two into a great big day trip out!

Right in the middle of Sulphur Springs is the Hopkins County Courthouse building. Sitting on Celebration Plaza, it has an unusual mix of materials and design that puts it at odds with everything else in Sulphur Springs and even Texas.

We're talking granite of various shades of pink, little turrets at the top and classic looking arches.

The courthouse is an acting building - there are court cases going on inside and various governmental services like passport issue. You're free to go in to take a look at what this amazing building looks like from the inside.

Outside on Celebration Plaza, you can't not notice the two glass restrooms. The glass is mirrored from the outside but see-through from the inside which creates an eery and very odd feeling if you happen to be using it while seeing everybody else around you.

17. Explore the coves of Possum Kingdom State Park

1 hour 45 minutes from Fort Worth (103 miles)

Like many of the lakes in Texas, Possum Kingdom is not really a lake, but a reservoir formed as the Brazos River was blocked by a dam to manage the water flow and irrigation.

Also like many of the lakes in Texas, this is exactly why it's a great place to come for a day - the way that dammed rivers spill through the various valleys creates an amazing number of small cozy coves, little rocky beaches and outlets that are perfect for spending a day unwinding from the daily grind.

The best way to enjoy and explore the lake is to get yourself onto it. Grab your choice of kayak, canoe, paddle board or boat and go exploring up and down. For the more adventurous, scuba diving and water skiing is available although Possum Kingdom isn't quite the Barrier Reef.

With over 300 miles of coastline, there are a lot of parts to Lake Possum Kingdom and the State Park covers only a small area on the southwestern side.

There's not a huge amount to do here but you can chill by the trees or camp and stay overnight. The two trails don't cover even 2 miles between them. Technically there are 3 official trails but the third is just a shortcut for the 1.4 mile "long" trail.

18. Catch striped bass and catfish on Lake Texoma

1 hour 50 minutes from Fort Worth (109 miles)

While we're on the theme of lakes that are actually rivers with a dam, enter Lake Texoma.

The massive lake sits on the border between Texas and Oklahoma and was formed in 1944 when the Red River was dammed downstream. Today it's the place where people from both states come to relax.

The best reason to go to Lake Texoma is fishing. The large lake apparently has 70 different fish species and unusually for inland rivers, the water is salty so the catch of the day is saltwater fish.

The area where the river was dammed and flooded had been the bed of a small sea many thousands of years ago and the salt that remained when the sea was gone got absorbed by the lake.

As a result, you can catch things like striped bass which usually can only be caught in seas and oceans right in the middle of Texas!

Around the lake are dozens of campsites, parks, resorts and golf courses. Some are worth going to but a few are not as well maintained as other parks in Texas and if you're looking to camp overnight, do your research and maybe opt for a different location.

19. See exotic animals at the Arbuckle Wilderness Park

1 hour 50 minutes from Fort Worth (123 miles)

We've already mentioned a few places that can be found going north along the I-35. Denton (#3), Lake Murray (#15) and the WinStar casino (#11) are all en route, but if you keep on going a little further into Oklahoma you'll come to the Arbuckle Wilderness Park.

Arbuckle Wilderness and Turner Falls are a few minutes away from each other either side of the highway, so if you're driving all this way, you might as well make the most of it and visit both.

The wilderness park is a drive-through safari experience. A lot of the animals come from Africa and you'll see giraffes and a rhino. Other residents include llamas, deer, bison and curious donkeys.

The roads through the park can be bumpy, have potholes and some are unpaved so make sure you're happy for what that's likely to do to your car (as well as animals that take a liking to your mirrors). Also don't come in a low clearance sports car!

20. Cross the border into Oklahoma to see Turner Falls

1 hour 55 minutes from Fort Worth (122 miles)

Just a few minutes away from the Arbuckle Wilderness Park are Turner Falls - a 2 hour drive north along the I-35 from Fort Worth.

At 77 feet tall, Turner Falls shares the accolade of being the tallest waterfall in Oklahoma with one in the Natural Falls State Park and the area around the falls is a popular weekend retreat.

There are lots of things to do in and around the water - there's a creek running through the park but you'll definitely want to take care with water shoes and life jackets are mandatory for kids.

Take care if you venture up the short hike to the overlook or into the deeper water. The hiking routes can be a little treacherous and have steep drops to the side and the water is known for being very cold and deep.

If you're thinking of staying over, I'd definitely recommend picking a different park for camping. Although the waterfall is worth seeing and spending the day at, there have been a lot of reports over several months of poor upkeep, trash being left around and poor park management with loud music and tents being put up close to others.

Lake Murray is on the way back to Fort Worth and is a much better camping option if you want to make it a weekend getaway.

21. See the roses and azaleas in Tyler, Texas

2 hours from Fort Worth (142 miles)

Tyler may be a 2-hour drive from Fort Worth, but if you're planning to go on a day trip in spring or early summer, this may be just the right place to go!

The best way to get here is to follow the I-20 out of Fort Worth all the way to just outside Tyler. Navigation systems might send you through Dallas along the I-30, but you'll be playing traffic roulette as you loop around downtown Dallas.

The small and unassuming city of Tyler has not just got one, but two stunning places to see flowers and if you want to take the family for a day amid all shades of pink, purple and red, you're in luck.

The main sight is the Municipal Rose Garden - the 14 acre and 40,000 rose bush garden is the largest in the United States and has rose bushe varieties that date back to the 1860s and experimental rose types that are not available to the public.

Although the Rose Garden has given Tyler the Rose Capital of America nickname, don't forget to visit the Azalea Trails. In full bloom, the azalea bushes are amazing and are often overlooked in favor of the more famous garden 6 miles up the road.

22. Ride the classic trains of the Texas State Railroad in Palestine, Texas

2 hours 15 minutes from Fort Worth (141 miles)

The Texas State Railroad is a 25-mile track that runs between the towns of Palestine and Rusk in Texas. A freight train company operated on the track until 1921 and decades after it became disused, the track has become a tourist attraction.

You can get onto the train at either station, but Palestine is closer to Fort Worth and as the train does a round trip, it makes most sense to head here first.

To get here, you'll need to drive west, past Dallas and then find the station a little way past the town of Palestine along U.S. Highway 84 - it should take you a little over 2 hours on the road.

The railway doesn't miss a beat when it comes to history. The depot buildings have been restored to their original glory and the trains themselves are 19th century masterpieces.

Depending on the schedule and your luck, you will be pulled along by either a classic diesel or steam engine and the 4-hour journey can be done in a number of different classes ranging from the spartan wooden bench open air carriage through to the Presidential Car.

If you're going alone, $250 buys you a ride in the engine along with the driver but you'll need to book ahead and space is limited to 1 so don't do it if you're coming with your family and want them to like you afterwards!

23. A culture day trip to Marshall

2 hours 45 minutes from Fort Worth (185 miles)

Almost 3 hours is a long way to drive and although Marshall is an amazing town for a day trip from Fort Worth, you might want to extend your trip to a weekend or longer and add in the nearby Jefferson (#25 below) and a trip to Caddo Lake (#26) as well.

Some of the other entries on our list including Tyler (#21) and Terrell (#8) are on the way so you can break up the journey.

Marshall has called itself the Cultural Capital of East Texas and there are a few sights where you can explore this culture starting with the Harrison County Historical Museum in the Courthouse building (pictured above).

The Texas and Pacific Railway Museum will show you the history of Marshall being an important railway hub in the 19th century and the Michelson Museum of Art and Starr Family Home State Historic Site will help complete your cultural awakening.

If you're planning to come from late November through to Christmas, the Wonderland of Lights is the largest light festival in the United States so come and get some Christmas cheer on your day trip!

24. Visit the Texas State Capitol building in Austin

2 hours 50 minutes from Fort Worth (189 miles)

It may be the best part of 3 hours to drive from Fort Worth to Austin which may feel a long way to come for a day trip. I've done the drive from Fort Worth Airport and back and although it does take a bit of time, it's not too bad - the I-35 will take you all the way.

There's lots to see if you keep going past Texas - the Texas Hill Country has amazing cowboy towns and a famous wine region and San Antonio is also worthy of a trip, but these are all a little too far to come on a day trip, so Austin is as far as I've allowed on the way south.

Austin is the capital city of Texas - the State Capitol building can be seen from many parts of the city and worth a short stop. If you are particularly interested, find the guided tour times and get yourself on one of them.

Right near the Capitol is the Bullock Texas State History Museum which has a lot of interesting exhibits about the history of Texas and Austin specifically.

If you want to relax with perfect views of Austin, Zilker Park on the south bank of the Colorado River is the place to come. There is a natural spring water pool where the water is perfectly clear (and chilly!) if you fancy a swim.

25. Take life in the slow lane in Jefferson

3 hours from Fort Worth (201 miles)

It will take you a good 3 hours to get to Jefferson - it's a long drive and you may well want to make your trip longer to make the most of it. Caddo Lake is just down the road (see #26 below) as is the city of Marshall (#23) so you can make a weekend out of it.

Known as the Bed and Breakfast Capital of the U.S., you'll have some great options for overnight lodging all over the city too.

The best way to see Jefferson is to get out of the car and take a walk through the historic downtown. There's small local shops to pop into and the Big Cypress Bayou flows through town - you can go on a short boat ride along it!

The most famous attraction in Jefferson is the Jefferson General Store - you won't miss it with a bright blue classic Chevy pickup parked outside and inside you'll find a classic Americana store complete with a soda fountain and Blue Bell Ice Cream.

There's a few other interesting museums in town - the local Museum of Measurement and Time has a collection of clocks and other interesting instruments for measuring pretty much everything you can measure. The Jefferson Historical Museum tells the history of the town and the Historic Jefferson Railway behind it is a sure hit with the kids.

26. Go to a real Southern swamp at Caddo Lake

3 hours from Fort Worth (203 miles)

You may think that real Southern swamps are reserved for Louisiana, Florida and select other locations along the Gulf Coast - way too far to visit from Fort Worth.

But Caddo Lake on the border between Texas and Louisiana is just 200 miles away and although it's a fairly long drive, you can easily do it in a day with an early start and see it for yourself.

The Big Cypress Bayou flows into the lake and all the compulsory ingredients of a real southern swamp are here. Complex hard to navigate waterways through shrubbery, tall grass and surface growth? Tick. Tall bald cypress trees growing right out of the water? Also tick. You want to see gators? Big tick here too!

Entry to the Caddo Lake State Park costs just $4 and you can see a lot here. There's also steamboat tours that go around the lake stopping at some of the towns that are a great way of seeing different parts of the lake.

The towns of Jefferson (#25 above) and Marshall (#23) are great places to stop and there's lots of other towns along the I-20 where you can break up the journey with Tyler, Terrell and Canton all on our list.

27. Get lost in the pine woods of Davy Crockett National Forest

3 hours 5 minutes from Fort Worth (203 miles)

Part of the large Piney Woods in Eastern Texas, the Davy Crockett National Forest can feel a million miles away from Fort Worth. The drive is not quite that long although expect to take over 3 hours to get over in the morning.

The National Forest is full of pine trees, creeks and small roads rather than the more arid landscape around Fort Worth.

The most popular part is the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area. There's easily walkable hiking trails with nice wooden benches and picnic stops along the way which is great if you're bringing kids or need more frequent stops.

Parking is also decent and the distance to major cities in Texas is just big enough for it to not get too busy even at weekends.

If you are looking for a place where you can really get away from the hustle and bustle of the Dallas - Fort Worth metro area and listen to the swaying pine trees murmuring in the wind, get in the car and head down to the Davy Crockett National Forest.

28. A day out in Oklahoma City

3 hours from Fort Worth (200 miles)

With cities like Dallas and even Austin a shorter drive from Fort Worth, Oklahoma City may not be top of your agenda, but if you've already been to the big Texas hubs, the up and coming OKC is a great alternative.

The I-35 runs right from Fort Worth to Oklahoma City and once you get there, park up somewhere in Bricktown or the Business District - the parts of the city you want to see are very walkable and 3 hours each way is long enough to spend in a car!

The Oklahoma City National Memorial is a few blocks northwest of Bricktown and you really should visit. The poignant garden and pool pay tribute to the victims of the 1995 bombing.

On the way back to Bricktown, stop at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art or the American Banjo Museum if you like your museums a little more edgy.

Bricktown is a regenerated neighborhood with the canal and streets lined with bars and restaurants in beautiful converted warehouse buildings. Grab an early dinner here before heading back to Fort Worth!

29. Angelina National Forest

3 hours 20 minutes from Fort Worth (202 miles)

Angelina National Forest is a long stretch of protected land along the banks of the Angelina River, Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Neches River. The forest is predominantly pine and full of cool ways to spend the day.

The Sam Rayburn Reservoir area is the place to head and the forest covers both sides so save 20 minutes and go to the west shore.

There's hiking trails that run through the forest and along creeks and if you have a bike, there's some great routes in the area.

If you head a little further south, you'll find Boykin Springs where natural spring water emerges from the ground and flows down the rocks.

The most popular hiking trail in the park is in Boykin Springs - the Sawmill Hiking Trail is over 5 miles long but it's a relatively easy walk and goes through a mix of woods, fields and along the water.

30. Be at one with nature in Beavers Bend State Park, Oklahoma

3 hours 30 minutes from Fort Worth (209 miles)

Beavers Bend is the furthest away from Fort Worth on our list and you may well look at how long it'll take you to get here and opt for the many parks and lakes further up the list instead.

But if you want to go for a real day-long escape, Beavers Bend is in the southeastern corner of Oklahoma, near the border with Arkansas.

With at least 3 hours worth of driving from all big metro areas, Beavers Bend stays relatively quiet even during the peak season when the weather is at its best.

The Broken Bow Lake has every water-based activity you may want - there's kayaking and paddle boarding, fishing and water skiing.

Off the water, along with hiking, biking and horseback trails, there are some great driving roads through the State Park - most leading to the lake from the surrounding highways.

Perhaps the most notable attraction in Glen Rose, the Dinosaur Valley State Park is an excellent destination for a day trip with the family from Fort Worth. The park attracts loads of visitors to see actual dinosaur tracks along the Paluxy River’s riverbeds each year.

The Dinosaur tracks can be found in the riverbed, depending on the time of year. Be sure to confirm beforehand by calling the park to check track visibility for your visit.

Distance from Fort Worth : 78 miles | 1 Hour 15 minutes by car

Corsicana is just a short drive from Fort Worth, at slightly over an hour by car, just off Interstate 45 in Navarro County.

Notable attractions include The Pioneer Village Historical Museum, which offers a glimpse into Corsicana’s pioneering history, complete with pioneer-era settlements from the 1800s. Petroleum Park is another fascinating experience to discover the history of the Texas Petroleum industry born in Corsicana back in the 1950s.

Waco is a fascinating city rich in modern American history and culture with tons of exciting things to see and do. 

If you love arts, culture, and history, then you’ll want to explore the numerous museums and art galleries scattered throughout downtown Waco. Visit the Magnolia Market Silos for some shopping, a bite at the changing food trucks, or to enjoy the outdoor space.

Distance from Fort Worth : 95 miles | 1 Hour 30 minutes by car

Nature enthusiasts searching for outdoor activities and hiking near Forth Worth won’t go wrong with a day trip to Lake Tawakoni State Park. 

Roughly 90 minutes from the city, the beautiful park encompasses over 370 acres of land and forests and 50 miles of protected shoreline. 

Be sure to bring along your hiking boots or cycling gear to explore the many routes and trails, most of which are easy so suited to all abilities and families. The lake has excellent fishing, and fishing gear is available to rent on site. Wichita Falls

Distance from Fort Worth : 115 miles | 1 Hour 40 minutes by car

Wichita Falls, located between Dallas and Oklahoma City and roughly 90 minutes from Fort Worth, has been a cattle ranching area since the 1800s. 

Today, tourists will discover a sophisticated and colorful town with loads on offer to those visiting on a day trip or as part of a weekend trip from Forth Worth.

A visit to the waterfalls is one of the most obvious reasons to visit Wichita Falls. While the falls are magnificent and worth visiting, there is also so much more to do and see in Wichita to make your trip even more memorable.

So, you’re itching to escape downtown Fort Worth hustle but dread the idea of a long drive?

Texas has a long history to learn more about, or go for the state’s very own Napa Valley in Fredericksburg. Even juggling a 9-to-5, the dream was to see everything, even if it meant running on fumes come Monday morning. Luckily, my stint as a van lifer driving through Texas for over a month gave me the flexibility to wander the entire state.

Choosing the perfect day trip can be overwhelming when you’re short on time but long(horn) on options. After zigzagging through the areas surrounding Fort Worth and discovering all sorts of locales, here are my top picks for fun day trips from Fort Worth that won’t have you spending more time on the road than exploring.

Easy Day Trips from Fort Worth: Less than 1 Hour

1. arlington, texas .

Distance:  ~15 miles/20 minutes  Type:  Entertainment Best Time to Go:  Year-round

Arlington is the ultimate destination for excitement and fun. With the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers calling it home, you’re in for a thrilling time cheering at AT&T Stadium or Globe Life Park. The stadiums buzz with energy, whether you’re a dedicated fan or just there for the hot dogs and halftime shows.

Well, it’s where you’ll find the famous Magnolia Market at the Silos, brought to life by Chip and Joanna Gaines from HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.” Picture shopping, dining, and relaxation all in one beautifully landscaped rustic setting. And let’s not forget the incredible food trucks you can’t miss.

Explore the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum or the intriguing Dr. Pepper Museum showcasing the nation’s oldest soft drink. For animal lovers, the Cameron Park Zoo boasts exotic creatures, while the Waco Mammoth National Monument reveals the awe-inspiring remains of mammoths that once roamed the area thousands of years ago.

14. Old Zoo Nature Trails, Cisco

Los Angeles isn’t the only spot with an abandoned old zoo to explore. For a unique hiking adventure, consider checking out the Old Zoo Nature Trails in Cisco, Texas.

Established in the 1920s, the community was thrilled to attract visitors to their area. Despite the zoo’s modest animal collection by today’s standards, it was adored by many. However, the zoo’s closure was influenced by a murder mystery involving a poisoned bear and suspicious deer deaths.

Left deserted in the 1930s, a local nonprofit later repurposed the area into a hiking trail. Visitors can still pass by the old enclosures, shelters, and staff offices, creating a haunting yet peaceful 1.5-mile path.

15. Davis, Oklahoma (Turner Falls Park)

Known as the “Rose Capital of America,” Tyler, Texas, has giant rose gardens and a quaint historic district. Stroll through the Tyler Rose Garden to enjoy one of the largest public rose gardens in the U.S., filled with numerous rose bushes and blooms. There’s the annual Texas Rose Festival in October, too!

Aside from roses, check out the historic Carnegie Library, the Goodman-LeGrand House & Museum, the contemporary displays at the Tyler Museum of Art, or just relax by Lake Tyler.

18. Paris, Texas

Distance:  ~140 miles/2 hours and 15 minutes Type:  Quaint Small Town Charm Best Time to Go:  Spring for the annual Dogwood Festival

A quick drive from Fort Worth leads to a town named after its French sibling. Paris, Texas, features architecture blending Victorian and Art Deco influences. There’s the replica of the Eiffel Tower or honor veterans at the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial. During the annual Dogwood Festival in spring, the blooming dogwood trees can be seen citywide.

19. Texas State Railroad, Palestine & Rusk, Texas

Hop on the  Texas State Railroad , a cool historic train cruising through the piney woods of East Texas. It has vintage steam and diesel engines, and each car has its own vibe—like the fancy First Lady or the open-air Sunset Limited.

At the stop by the 1880s-style train depot, you can check out exhibits and catch a classic train robbery reenactment. Plus, there are themed rides, like the Christmas Polar Express or a sweet Valentine’s Day dinner train.

20. Austin, Texas

Distance:  ~200 miles/3 hours  Type:  Urban & Foodie Adventures Best Time to Go to Austin:  Spring or Fall

Definitely a spot perfect for weekend getaways, Austin totally won me over! I’ve revisited three times now, staying 2 weeks to a month each time. Having a close friend who’s now a homeowner makes it even better.

As the capital of Texas, Austin is a young city with plenty of entertainment, music, and mouthwatering food, especially Terry Black’s Texan BBQ. Take a walk down South Congress Avenue for some street art, weird shops, and delicious food trucks. Don’t miss the bats emerging from Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset (only in summer). 

Make sure to paddleboard on Ladybird Lake, catch a live music gig on Sixth Street (Dirty Six), or attend one of the various music fests like South by Southwest (SXSW) or Austin City Limits.

21. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Even though it’s not in Texas, Oklahoma City makes for a fantastic day trip from Fort Worth. Dive into its vibrant history at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, honoring the 1995 bombing victims.

For family enjoyment, go to the Oklahoma City Zoo or Frontier City amusement park. And Oklahoma has its own set of super renowned barbecue spots!

22. Longhorn Cavern, Burnet, Texas

Distance:  ~180 miles/3 hours Type:  Cave Exploration & History Best Time to Go : Spring and fall

This Central Texas limestone cave,  Longhorn Cavern  is shaped by a now-dried-up river. Ancient native Americans, outlaws have used this cavern for shelter as well as arrowhead crafting and guano mining for gunpowder. It’s even been used as a licensed nuclear fallout shelter. 

Join a guided tour to discover the cave’s past and marvel at unique formations like the Queen’s Throne and Crystal City. Bring a jacket, as the cool temperature inside remains constant year-round!

Fort Worth Day Trips: Less than 4 Hours

23. caddo lake state park, karnack, texas.

Distance:  200 miles/3 hours and 5 minutes Type:  Water Recreation & Wildlife Watching Best Time to Go : Spring and fall

Caddo Lake in Northeast Texas, bordering Louisiana, is a stunning bayou formed by a mix of swamps and ponds spanning 25,400 acres. The Spanish moss drapes over bald cypress trees that shimmer like long gray hair. The air is filled with chirping birds, croaking frogs, and the occasional sighting of alligators gliding through the water.

The lake’s history is steeped in the pearl rush of 1910 when freshwater pearls were discovered in the mussels. This frenzy lasted for three years until rising water levels made it challenging to access the mussels. While the pearl seekers have long departed, modern visitors now glide by boat through the sloughs and ponds to fish, bird-watch, or catch a glimpse of the lake’s mysterious reptilian residents.

24. San Marcos, Texas 

Distance:  ~220 miles/3 hours and 20 minutes  Type:  Water Recreation & Outdoor Adventure Best Time to Go to San Marcos : Spring to fall

Midway between Austin and San Antonio, San Marcos has amazing river tubing opportunities along the crystal-clear San Marcos River. While it’s a bit of a drive from Fort Worth, I can vouch for the fun factor despite getting caught in a lightning storm on our visit.

Cap off a day of outdoor adventures by visiting one of the numerous local breweries or wineries for some artisanal drinks.

25. New Braunfels, Texas

Distance:  ~240 miles/3 hours and 35 minutes Type:  Water Recreation & Outdoor Adventure Best Time to Go:  Summer for river tubing and water parks

Between Austin and San Antonio, New Braunfels stands out as a top summer spot, thanks to its star attractions: the Comal and Guadalupe rivers. These waterways offer a cool escape from the Texas sun, perfect for river tubing, kayaking, and rafting.

You’ll spot groups linking tubes and leisurely floating downstream, stocked with coolers of drinks and snacks. For a thrill, try the city’s tube chute.

If water parks are more your style, there’s also the Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort or Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

26. Wimberley, Texas

For a chill day trip filled with small-town charm, check out Wimberley. This hidden gem in the Hill Country is famous for its cute shops and art galleries. Fancy a dip? Jump into the Blue Hole or hike to Jacob’s Well – an artesian spring that hides a submerged cave. Divers have ventured into depths of over 100 feet! 

Get crafty at Wimberley Glassworks for a cool glass-blowing experience, and savor some local wines at the town’s wineries.

27. Pedernales Falls State Park

Just to the west of Austin,  Pedernales Falls State Park  is a serene getaway. The focal point of the park is the scenic Pedernales River, cascading over limestone ledges and large, smooth rocks.

Take a refreshing plunge into the cool waters at the limestone falls, a beloved spot for swimming and tubing, or put on your hiking boots to meander along trails that guide you to sunset vistas from atop white cliffs.

28. Hamilton Pool Preserve, Dripping Springs 

Distance:  ~215 miles/3 hours and 25 minutes Type:  Outdoor Adventure & Scenic Views Best Time to Go : Spring and fall

This natural pool is a spot you can’t miss in the scorching summer heat. The Hamilton Pool Preserve is a stunning swimming oasis featuring a 50-foot waterfall sculpted into the limestone bedrock and nourished by an underground river. The freshwater has turned the whole place into a lush green paradise.

You’ll be awestruck by the deep overhang above the pool, a reminder of a natural dome that collapsed and hid the spring in the distant past.

Due to its popularity all year round, reservations are now a must. Also, you can’t bring your pet to the park, not even in the car.

29. Fredericksburg, Texas 

Distance:  ~230 miles/3 hours and 50 minutes Type:  Small Town & Wine Country Best Time to Go to Fredericksburg : Spring and fall for Oktoberfest celebrations 

Referred to as the heart of Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is a quaint town with a rich German heritage. It is renowned as the Napa of Texas for its abundance of wineries and tastings. You can also wander down historic Main Street or embark on a scenic drive to the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Eat some comfort German cuisine during your visit!

In the spring, be sure to take in the wildflower fields, and come fall and grab some beers in the annual Oktoberfest celebrations. For enthusiasts of bat caves, there’s a deserted railroad tunnel just 10 miles away that houses up to 3 million bats.

30. Houston, Texas 

Distance:   ~265 miles/3 hours and 55 minutes Type:  Cultural & Urban Exploration Best Time to Go to Houston : Spring and fall

Houston, as the largest city in Texas, offers endless activities. Personally, it left me amazed. Even after three days of driving all over the city, I couldn’t cover everything, making it perfect for a longer trip.

If you can only do one thing in Houston , visit the Space Center Houston for insights into NASA’s missions, check out the immersive art at Seismique or the renowned works at the Menil Collection. And take Instagram pictures at the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park – it’s pretty awesome.

For more adventure, a one-hour drive can get you to Galveston Island’s coast.

31. San Antonio, Texas

This drive is getting long, but a San Antonio trip is a must-see destination in Texas. It’s also small enough for a day trip. The famous River Walk is a hit with both tourists and locals. The scenic waterway is surrounded by dining, shopping, and entertainment options. 

You can’t not see the historic Alamo to learn more about Texas history. Or, for some family excitement, check out SeaWorld San Antonio or Six Flags Fiesta Texas for thrilling rides. And, of course, taste some tasty Tex-Mex cuisine while you’re here!

The capital of Texas and self-proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World is the perfect weekend trip from Dallas for those looking to keep things just a little weird.

Take a dip in one of Austin’s many nearby natural swimming holes , go hunting for street art on South Congress, tour the Texas State Capitol Building, watch the sunset at Mount Bonnell, escape to the Texas Hill Country for the day, and of course enjoy plenty of nightlife!

Driving Distance from Dallas

New Orleans, LA

Featuring some of the best food, music, and culture in all of the country, having a city as incredible as NOLA reachable as a road trip from Dallas is definitely something to take advantage of!

While you’re there, be sure to enjoy Bourbon Street, but get off of it, as well: NOLA is more than just its incredible partying (though the partying does indeed live up to the legends).

5 Fantastic Day Trips From Fort Worth, Texas

Whether you’re interested in dinosaurs, museums, historic homes, bed and breakfasts, innovative restaurants, wineries, breweries, art, or unique shopping, you’ll find it all within a couple of hours from Fort Worth, Texas — my hometown.

Explore with me the Dinosaur Capital of Texas, the state’s Best Historic Small Town in America, my grandparents’ hometown, with the new Magnolia Headquarters, my favorite Texas Frontier Town (where my sister lives), and Gingerbread City. Each town qualifies as a favorite weekend getaway.

1. Glen Rose

Hunt dancing dinosaur tracks lining the creek beds and riverbeds of Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, famous as the Dinosaur Capital of Texas.

If your grandchildren are as fascinated with dinosaurs as mine are, visit Dinosaur World , where they can wander among more than 100 life-sized beasts. The animatronic dinosaurs make little jaws drop. We love the dinosaur dig for fossils and the playground. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.

Eagle Eye Ranch is a great place to experience a horse-drawn carriage or wagon ride. Saddle up and ride a horse through scenic trails around the state park.

You can’t miss the historic Courthouse of Somervell County , constructed in 1893, on the square surrounded by retail stores, restaurants, offices, specialty shops, and museums.

My Secret: I can’t pass up Pie Peddlers on the square, voted the best pie in the Lone Star State. Buy a slice or a whole pie. The top-selling prize is Strawberry Rhubarb, but I like the lemon or chocolate meringue piled high like Mom used to make. My husband gets the pecan pie topped with a scoop of cinnamon ice cream.

Nearby, don’t miss Fossil Rim Wildlife Center , Glen Rose’s taste of Africa, with over 50 different species of animals covering 1,700 acres. We love the drive-through tour, plus add a unique overnight stay at Fossil Rim Lodge or Foothills Safari Cabins . Fossil Rim has saved several endangered animals, including Attwater prairie chickens , white rhinoceros, cheetahs, and red wolves.

Pro Tip: Stay at Inn on the River and have lunch or dinner at Riverhouse Grill . If money is no object, Rough Creek Lodge and Resort is a must with dinner by award-winning executive chef Gerard Thompson.

2. Granbury

Historic Granbury , voted USA Today’s best historic small town in America, is the perfect place for exploring. Take the business exit to Granbury Square, where the 1890 Hood County Courthouse stands as the centerpiece of Granbury’s history.

First, we visit the Bridge Street History Center and the Granbury Doll House Museum . Have lunch at Christina’s American Table on the square, a hidden gem offering creative sandwiches, homemade soups, and fresh salads. Continue the history lesson at the Yeats-Duke 1858 Museum and the Hood County Old Jail Museum .

For a taste of Granbury’s wine scene, explore Bull Lion Ranch Wine Shop and Italian Market , or D’Vine Wine of Granbury .

Tour the Local Goat Distillery on Friday or Saturday for a 30- to 45-minute tour. Charcuterie boards feature local craft cheese from Veldhuizen in Dublin , craft chocolate from Wiseman House Chocolates in Hico, plus gourmet meats, crackers, nuts, and spreads.

Another reward awaits you: an Oasis Horse and Carriage ride around Historic Granbury Square, led by Valor, a 16-year-old Belgian Draft Horse, the “gentle giant.”

I love The Granbury Ghosts and Legends Tour for haunted history.

Pro Tips: Stay overnight at Captain’s House on the Lake or Inn on Lake Granbury . For dinner, I recommend Eighteen Ninety Grille and Lounge or Babe’s Chicken Dinner House for Southern home cooking.

The Chip and Joanna Gaines Magnolia Market and the Silos, Magnolia Press, Table, Bakery, and Magnolia House, are some of the biggest attractions in Waco , drawing 1.8 million visitors annually. My grandparents lived here when I was growing up; they wouldn’t recognize Waco today.

Waco is home to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, Baylor University , and Waco Mammoth National Monument, housing fossils of 24 Columbian mammoths discovered in 1978. If I were to choose a soft drink museum, the Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco is the winner. I remember when my grandfather made me hot Dr. Pepper with lemon when I had the sniffles.

Visit the zoo , the overlook called Lovers Leap , and my favorite: Jacob’s Ladder, where we climbed the 100 steps up the cliff (all these attractions are in Cameron Park ). Take a luxury cruise on the Brazos River , see historic bridges, or stroll the Waco Riverwalk.

For whiskeys, bourbons, and rums, visit Balcones Distilling and get a behind-the-scenes tour. The Bare Arms Brewing taproom is home to a Jalapeno Cilantro Mexican Lager. Or find your favorite brew at Waco Ale Company .

Hop aboard the free Silo District Trolley to explore the Downtown Cultural District’s restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, wineries, and the farmers market. You could spend all afternoon shopping at Spice Village , The Findery , and Central Texas Marketplace .

Pro Tips: Chip and Jojo fans should stay at the Magnolia House or check out these Fixer Upper vacation rentals . Go early to beat the lines at the Magnolia Table . New episodes of Fixer Upper are available on the Magnolia Network .

I always find something artistic or historical when I visit my sister in Salado, a famous stage-stop on the Old Chisholm Trail , where Sam Houston and Jesse James hung their hats at the Stagecoach Inn, constructed in 1861. After a recently completed renovation, the luxury destination is now known as the Shady Villa Hotel .

At the hotel’s famous Stagecoach Restaurant , order breakfast with homemade buttermilk waffles or steak and eggs and a great cup of coffee. For dinner, my favorite is the brown butter trout, or indulge in the eight-ounce bourbon mushroom sirloin.

Inn on the Creek , a series of Victorian homes, is an upscale bed and breakfast and trendy gourmet restaurant locally famous as the site of Jenna Bush’s bridesmaids’ luncheon. The presidential entourage besieging Salado from nearby Caldwell was the hottest news since Sam Houston delivered his speech from the hotel balcony.

Explore the Royal Street District for cork-and-create classes, handmade Mud Pies Pottery , hand-blown glass, and Japanese creative stoneware. Spend the afternoon shopping for clothes and jewelry in Salado Square or 21 Main for unique home decor.

The Barrow Brewing Company , located in the revived old pole barn granary along Salado Creek, offers a Tipsy Vicar stout and Ski Boat Blonde Ale. Order six-packs and pizza to-go.

Find wines from Texas-grown grapes sourced locally at Salado Winery Co. or Axis Winery , with its cozy tasting room inside a log cabin.

Pro Tip: Stay at the Shady Villa Hotel, Inn on the Creek, or The Rose Mansion Bed and Breakfast . Lunch at Cathy’s Boardwalk Cafe and haave dinner at The Stagecoach Restaurant .

5. Waxahachie

Waxahachie, famous as the Gingerbread City and the Crepe Myrtle Capital of Texas, is one of 89 certified Texas Main Street communities backed by the Texas Historical Commission for the revitalization of their historic downtowns.

The Ellis County Courthouse is the town’s most impressive landmark. Italian sculptor Harry Herley created intricate carvings in the enormous red sandstone stacks ranging from his sweetheart’s face to faces with frowns, turned-down smiles, toothless grins, some demons, and gargoyles, all the result of his romance rejected.

Stroll the downtown square and relax amid the calm and friendly atmosphere. Do not miss lunch or dinner at the Doves Nest Restaurant for the famous Flower-Pot Chicken Pie or the infamous hot brownie souffle with vanilla ice cream sauce. Personally, I can’t pass up cupcake heaven at Bittersweet Bakery , either.

Visit the Historic Downtown District , where you’ll find the Sims Library with massive columns framing the entrance. Find irresistible pieces at Gingerbread Antique Mall . Learn the town’s history at the Ellis County Museum and see art exhibits hosted by the Ellis County Art Association . Enjoy the outdoors during a walk around Waxahachie Creek Hike and Bike Trail . Play at the splash pads at George Brown Plaza .

At Cork House Winery , I recommend the Rowdy Texan, a malbec, or Thee Cheers and a Charm, an apricot-peach chardonnay.

Pro Tip: Stay at one of many bed and breakfasts in Waxahachie.

When the weather begins to warm and wildflowers start to bloom, spring fever erupts. Time to get out of the house and off on a road trip . Fill the tank, grab the camera and leave Dallas & Fort Worth heading north, south, east or west for one of these reinvigorating weekend getaways. From relaxing wineries, great shops and delightful art to historical museums, dinosaur bones and adventure, these are the best weekend getaways from DFW, Texas .

Head 35mi (56km) north from downtown and you’ll hit McKinney – great for a weekend or just a day. It’s a place for ambling, nosing in boutiques and for lazing over lunch in and around the pretty downtown square. Favorite spots include Cadillac Pizza Pub , and Landon Winer y. Hang around into evening and you’ll find many establishments have live music. If you’re into wildlife and hiking, the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature preserve with miles of trails, plus a plant garden and butterfly house. McKinney is also known for vineyards and breweries, so you’ll have no trouble quenching your thirst after all that walking.

Oklahoma City

Three hours up Interstate 35, Oklahoma City is a cinch to get around and has masses to see and do. Start at the Museum of Art – where a 55ft (17m) blown-glass installation in the atrium greets you, created by Dale Chihuly. In fact, the museum has one of the most comprehensive collections of Chihuly glass in the world. After, observe a moment’s silence at the Oklahoma City National Memorial, and visit the adjoining museum, which explores the events of 19 April 1995: the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building; the loss of 168 lives; the wounding of 680; and the consequences in the days, weeks and years that followed. End up in buzzy Bricktown with a bite and a bevy at one of its watering holes: the oldest tap house in the city, TapWerks, has real atmosphere – and more than 200 beers on tap.

Fredericksburg

The clue’s in the name: this town was founded by German settlers in the mid-19th century. You still get a taste of the homeland today in the architecture and the food, the military history and the rambling vineyards. It’s around four hours’ drive south of Dallas & Forth Worth, amid the rolling landscapes of Hill Country, with hundreds of B&Bs to choose between. Settle in and make your first stop the National Museum of the Pacific War ; packed with interactive exhibits, it tells the story of the Pacific Theater battles of World War II. While here, idle in the Japanese Garden of Peace. Next stop: Main Street, for art galleries and shops, then refreshments – there are beer gardens at Hondo’s On Main and Auslander, as well as live music. One evening, hit the Rockbox Theater for country, rock and blues tributes; and spend a day exploring the wineries along Highway 290 – try a tour, so you can drink a tempranillo or two.

Halfway between Dallas and Austin is the college town of Waco, home to the Mayborn Museum – on the Baylor University campus – which is especially fun for children, with interactive stations and displays; while all ages will love the Waco Mammoth exhibit. Walking on a see-through floor you see, below, casts of Columbian mammoth bones displayed exactly as they were unearthed mere miles from the campus. With hunger pangs gnawing, hit the Collin Street Bakery for a slice of pie, a macaroon or their famous fruit cake. For a more substantial meal, something meaty from Rudy’s Bar-B-Q will hit the spot.

San Antonio

Five hours south of Dallas & Forth Worth, along I-35, lies the perfect long weekend. San Antonio, of course, means a visit to the Alamo, the Spanish Missions and the famed River Walk; but it’s also a winner if you’re in the mood for food: Mexican , French or German . Favorite treats include the prickly pear margarita and guacamole made tableside at Boudro’s, and brunch at The Guenther House – famed for serving enormous buttermilk biscuits. Built in 1860, it’s both a restaurant and a museum: admire the stained-glass windows and light fixtures, and shop for gifts at the on-site River Mill Store – it does a fine line in recherche gravy mixes and vintage-towel sets. There are more fabulous homes in the surrounding King William Historic District, if you’ve got spare time to wander further.

One hour southwest of the big city, just off Highway 377, you’ll roll into quaint Granbury which, for good reason, wins awards of the ‘Best Historic Small Town in America’ variety: it’s rich in both heritage and hospitality. Stay in one of the many B&Bs or inns here, or consider the RV parks, cabins and cottages. Spend the day shopping – Granbury Square has more than 40 unique outlets, plus the landmark Hood County Courthouse in ornate French Second Empire style (today, it’s a fascinating museum). If you’re in town on a Saturday afternoon, check out the popular Revolver Brewery – at 7 percent ABV, the Blood & Honey Texas Ale here is a hit. Before you leave, squeeze in a production at the renovated 1886 Opera House.

Palo Duro Canyon

Five hours west from the big city lies Texas’s answer to the Grand Canyon of Arizona . If you’re not camping or renting a cabin, consider staying in nearby Amarillo so you have plenty of time to take in the majestic beauty of this awesome spectacle – hit the trails early for that photogenic morning light. Palo Duro Canyon State Park has more than 30mi (48km) of marked trails to explore, either by hiking, mountain biking or horse riding. Nearby Elkins Ranch, a working cattle ranch, lays on Jeep tours and is steeped in Old West adventure and history. Of course, things are always bigger in Texas – you’ll find more than 2m exhibits at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum . From dinosaur relics to conquistador memorabilia, it’s all here in the largest history museum in Texas.

A few miles south of Tyler, Bullard is a town with an ace up its sleeve: the American Freedom Museum , on The Brook Hill School campus. The Hall of Presidents includes a signed document by every president from George Washington to Barack Obama. The Hall of Freedom chronicles the major conflicts the United States has been involved in since the Revolutionary War. It’s energy-sapping stuff, so make sure you’re based for the weekend 10 minutes northeast in Kiepersol, an estate winery, distillery, restaurant and B&B. Founded by South African native Pierre de Wet, it’s famed for quality and service. Try wine tastings at your leisure – tours take place at designated times, no reservations needed. You’ll also get to enjoy steak or seafood for dinner, surrounded by the two-story cellar lined with hundreds of bottles from around the world.

Founded in the 1850s, Pittsburg is a pretty little slice of Americana, with timber churches, chapels and a Commercial Historic District of brick buildings with storefronts in cast iron, wood and glass. Beyond town is Daingerfield State Park , home to the Rustling Leaves Nature Trail, where you can hike, camp and fish in the shadow of vividly colored maples, gums and oaks. The big attraction – particularly if you like a tipple – is nearby Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards . Book the weekend special and you’ll get live jazz on the expansive patio. See, too, if you can get onto one of the cooking classes with acclaimed chef Enam Chowdhury. Aim to bed down in one of the cottages at Lavender Mermaid Farm B&B , with its lavender chocolates, lavender scones at (gourmet) breakfast and even lavender bath products. No need to worry about having a good night’s sleep; inhale those aromas and you’ll be out for the count.

Every Texan spring road trip has to feature those floral favorites – bluebonnets. And where better to be at one with the state flower than in Ennis – the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas – half an hour southeast of Dallas on I-45? Each spring, the Ennis Garden Club ramps up the color scheme by hosting a 40mi (64km) mapped drive among horizons of the incredible blooms in the Bluebonnet Trails. If the motoring has got you all revved up, plug into more speed at the Texas Motorplex drag-racing facility or experience a stock-car race at Big O Speedway.

Wichita Falls

Just a cow-tail’s flick from the Texas/Oklahoma state border is the city of Wichita Falls . Although the city’s namesake natural waterfalls were washed away two centuries ago, you’ll love the other natural (and constructed) attractions including Lucy Park, River Bend Nature Center, Lake Wichita and Castaway Cove Waterpark. If you’re a history buff take a look around the Museum of North Texas History to learn more about the area. Meanwhile, fans of the squared circle should head over to the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum.

Tyler, an easy two hours’ drive east of Dallas on I-30, may not have the same mainstream mega-wattage as the Lonestar State’s major metropolises, but the Rose Capital of America is worthy of your weekend. The quaint brick-lined streets, charming family-owned shops and Texas-sized eats in vibrant downtown will make you feel at home. Tyler is one place where you should stop and smell the roses; figuratively and literally. The Azalea and Spring Flower Trail , as well as various rose gardens and nurseries, will tempt you to take it slowly and savor every breath of fresh Texas air.

Point your vehicle down I-45 from Dallas and in about an hour you’ll be saying hello to Corsicana. This city celebrates its history at every opportunity, hosting festivals and absorbing tours throughout the year. Every week, you’ll get the opportunity to sip a cocktail and support local businesses – that’ll be Mimosas at the Market. Meanwhile annual events such as the Best Little Airshow in Texas, Derrick Days and the Cotton Harvest Festival draw crowds from near and far. If you’re a competitive cyclist, here’s a date for your diary: the spring Tour of Corsicana is a race through downtown like no other.

Fort Worth: Starting Your Road Trip

You've officially started your road trip from Fort Worth - now what? Before you head towards Waco, stop and take a moment to enjoy all that Fort Worth has to offer. Starting with some of the local restaurants, small boutiques, and of course enjoying some of the natural beauty. Not sure which spots to stop? Here are some suggestsions:

No matter which hot spots you decide to stop at, it's bound to be a Texas adventure. 

Stop #1: Fort Worth Water Gardens

Start your Fort Worth road trip off on a fun and relaxing note. The Fort Worth Water Gardens , built in 1974, is located right downtown near the Convention Center - making it a perfect first (or last) stop along your journey. You can walk along the water features, take in the unique beauty, and learn a bit about its history! 

Stop #2: Fort Worth Zoo

Once you've begun making your way a little bit outside of the city, your next stop should be the Fort Worth Zoo . Home to over 540 species including 72 species of mammals, 148 species of birds and 172 species of ectotherms, the Fort Worth Zoo is a fun stop for campers of all ages! 

Stop #3: Hard 8 BBQ

Would it be a true Texas roadtrip without stopping for some tasty BBQ? Located right off the main road is the delicious Hard 8 BBQ where you can taste some of the best Texas flavor without breaking the bank. Try dishes like brisket, pulled pork, chicken poppers, and so much more. Plus, you might even have some leftovers for the rest of the trip!  

Stop #4: Bailey Lake Park

By this point in your drive, you may be ready to stretch your legs, so our next recommendation is stopping at the beautiful Bailey Lake Park . To walk around the whole lake is only a quick .6 miles, an easy stretch for the whole family! Stop #5: Skydive Dallas

For the dare-devils in the bunch looking to get your heart rate up along your road trip from Fort Worth, check out Skydive Dallas ! Drive Time: 1 hour, 28 minutes

Midway to Austin is The Cell Block in Clifton's historic and artsy downtown district. Stay the night in this jail cell built in the days of Bonnie and Clyde, but escape during the day to explore the shops, galleries, museums and theaters throughout the area. The wrought-iron Clifton Whipple Truss Bridge, built in 1884, spanning 150 feet across the North Bosque River, is now condemned but still a sight worth seeing. Meanwhile, the Horn Shelter Site, at the Bosque Museum, is one of only three Paleo American sites in the country with skeletal remains and burial goods. Then there is the Red Caboose Winery in nearby Meridian, which hosts live music events, and the tasting room and deli in Clifton, offering a sampling of its award-winning wines.

Drive Time: 2 hours, 12 minutes

Begin your Abilene getaway with a fun and informative walking tour of town led by the cowboy poet Gus McDusty and get the lay of the land. Grab a steak at Perini Ranch Steakhouse and then catch a performance at the restored 1930s Paramount Theater. Next, explore the history of the Old West through the innovative exhibits at Frontier Texas in downtown Abilene, the folklore of historic Fort Phantom Hill and the many structures and artifacts on display at Buffalo Gap Historic Village. No matter how you choose to spend your Abilene days, though, spend your nights at one of Sayles Ranch Guesthouses exquisite homes. Each of the 11 guesthouses evokes the mystique of the frontier past with handmade mesquite furniture, frontier antiques and West Texas décor.

Drive Time: 2 hours, 5 minutes

Blending visual and performing art with local history, the Old Jail Art Center in Albany is a widely acclaimed museum experience. Opening in 1980 in Shackelford County's first permanent jail, the museum encompasses 17,000 square feet with over 2,000 works of art, including modern art from America and Europe, pre-Columbian and Asian art and the Sallie Reynolds Matthews collection dedicated to local Texas heritage. Continue this Texas heritage getaway by visiting the interpretive exhibits at Fort Griffin State Historic Site where one of the state's defensive forts stood until 1881. Tour the ruins of the fort while learning about the Red River War of 1874 and the Buffalo Soldiers who fought the Comanche and Kiowa there. A visit to Archer City and the Panhandle Plains means a room at the famous Spur Hotel. Within walking distance of the Spur is Larry McMurtry's celebrated bookstore, Booked Up Inc., which offers nearly 200,000 fine and scholarly books. For more Texas history, visit the Archer County Museum and Jail and a collection of historical sites around town like an infamous Jesse James hideout, the Archer County copper mines and the extinct town of Anarene.

Fishermen of all ages will love the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. This educational and entertaining fishery includes a number of exhibits along with 300,000 gallons worth of indoor and outdoor aquariums spread across 107 acres. There is a Hill Country stream exhibit, farm pond exhibit and reservoir exhibit packed with native fish species from around the state. Guests will enjoy a dive show and narrated hatchery tram tour, followed by a stroll along the mile-long Wetlands Trail.

Round out this freshwater getaway with a visit to Athens Scuba Park with over 35 sunken wrecks, 11 diving docks and a full-service dive shop at its spring-fed clear water lake. With an on-site classroom, training pool and open water lake, getting certified all in one place is simple.

Coleman and Talpa

A weekend getaway to Coleman and nearby Talpa is a Rancho Loma experience filled with food, wine and luxurious ranch living. But make time for local favorites like Nash Farm, Texas Star Dinner Theater and strolling the many shops and galleries in Historic Downtown Grapevine. Set sail on a Black Watch Sailing Charters sunset dinner cruise on Lake Grapevine's largest wooden-masted sailing vessel any Friday night during the summer and view Grapevine's SummerBlast fireworks show from the middle of the lake. Then there is the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, which offers seasonal excursions throughout the year like the North Pole Express for the whole family and Jazz Wine Train for something more romantic.

For something more adventurous, visitors can set sail on Lake Lewisville on a five-hour captained adventure sail with Thompson Sail Charters. For something more adventurous, enroll in its sailing school for lessons in terminology, knots, wind, deploying and trimming a sail and basic navigation. Or keep it laid-back and explore Lake Lewisville's nature preserve on a guided kayak tour through some truly breathtaking habitat.

Mount Vernon

Drive Time: 2 hours, 16 minutes

There's really no shortage of things to do in Mount Vernon if you head down to Deer Lake Cabins Ranch Resort. This 800-acre working horse ranch in East Texas is packed with woods, lakes, ponds and streams ripe for an unforgettable family adventure. Just steps from your lakeside cabin are hiking and biking trails, kayaks and standup paddleboards. Hit the trail on a guided horseback ride through forests of towering pines, explore the surrounding countryside and spot wildlife from a UTV, or sit back and relax on a hayride tour of the property's resident livestock. As a guest here, you'll take a picking basket, stroll the fields and pick the tulips you want, then bring them back home.

Every Saturday at 903 Brewers, visitors can tour the brewery, sample the newest beers on tap and listen to some local live music in the taproom. Try 903's award-winning flavors like The Chosen One Coconut Ale, Sasquatch Imperial Chocolate Milk Stout and the famous Scotch ale, Kilt Switch. The next day, relax amid 12,000 acres of colorful wildflowers and grasslands at Hagerman Wildlife Refuge. A Waco weekend means visiting the home of the nation's oldest major soft drink at the Dr. Pepper Museum, seeing the fossil remains of a nursery herd of ice age mammoths at Waco Mammoth National Monument and taking in a show at the extravagant Hippodrome Theatre on historic Austin Avenue. It also means visiting the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum packed with more than two centuries of artifacts detailing the history of these legendary lawmen and the state of Texas. Every time I hear the word Key Largo, my mind goes straight to the song “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys . What about you?

Key Largo is the “first” key of the Florida Keys.

It is often referred to as the “Diving Capital of the World” due to its proximity to the vibrant coral reefs of the Florida Keys. This area offers exceptional diving and snorkeling opportunities.

And Key Largo is home to the first underwater park in the United States, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . The park is renowned for its beautiful coral reefs and diverse marine life. This makes for the perfect spot for snorkeling or diving in the Keys.

Also, located in the waters of Key Largo is the famous underwater statue, Christ of the Abyss . This iconic site offers a unique diving and snorkeling experience.

But diving and snorkeling is not the only thing you can do in Key Largo. Key Largo is also a great spot to go swimming with dolphins at Dolphins Plus Bayside.

And if you’re afraid of underwater life like, me then a glass-bottom boat tour in Key Largo would make for a great activity! You can experience marine life and admire the coral reefs without getting wet!

6. Islamorada

Located in the middle of the Florida Keys, Islamorada is known for its stunning beaches, water sports activities, and world-class fishing.

Stop by Robbie’s Marina to hand-feed tarpon or enjoy a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants. At Robbie’s Marina, you can also rent kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, and boats to explore the surrounding waters and enjoy recreational activities on the ocean.

My favorite thing in Islamorada is the Islamorada Sandbar . It’s located less than a mile from the shore and you can only get there by boat or jet ski. The Islamorada Sandbar is a shallow area with crystal-clear, turquoise waters. It’s the perfect spot to hang out, swim, float on rafts, kayak, play water games, or just soak up the sun.

Also, located in Islamorada is the Theater of the Sea . This would make a memorable experience for animal lovers.

With a General Admission Ticket at Theatre of the Sea, you can watch the dolphin, sea lion, and parrot shows. Included is also a ride on a bottomless boat and a fish and reptile tour with tropical fish, sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, alligators, and crocodiles.
