Travel Scam Warning

AAA offers tips to travelers to avoid scams

It has been a busy summer for travel, and unfortunately, that strong interest has also attracted criminals who are looking to take advantage of others. AAA strongly urges travelers to use reputable services for their travel needs, and to be on alert for potential scams.

Recently, a AAA travel advisor came across a scam targeting air travelers. The scam specifically targets people who search for an airline’s phone number online because their flight has been canceled or delayed. Those fake phone numbers lead callers to an unrelated, third party that will ask for reservation information and credit card numbers to pay for a “service fee” or price difference between flights. In some cases, those “fees” are hundreds of dollars. AAA wants members, and all travelers, to be aware of these types of scams to avoid falling victim.

AAA Recommendations:

•    If your flight is delayed or canceled, and you’re at the airport, speak with a gate agent in person or use the airline’s app.  •    If you prefer to call the airline, use the toll-free number that appears on their website.  •    An airline will not charge you for a canceled or delayed flight.  •    Prior to a trip, download the airline’s app and save their toll-free number on your phone.  •    To avoid these situations, work with a travel agent ahead of time and purchase travel insurance to cover incidental expenses like meals and lodging in the event of a cancelation.

Just how busy is the travel industry? International trips continue to rise dramatically with travelers headed to popular destinations like London or Rome. Overall, AAA booking data reveals that international travel is up more than 200% compared to 2022. Hotel bookings are seeing the biggest jump, up more than 300% over last year. Unfortunately, the spike in demand is driving up airfare. Ticket prices for international trips have increased more than 30%, yet travelers aren’t hesitating when it comes to booking international getaways.

Domestic travel is also extremely busy with travelers heading to east coast beaches, National Parks, theme parks, and campgrounds. A new travel trend taking place this year has travelers booking bucket list destinations well in advance. AAA is seeing an increase in bookings for 2024 and even 2025, which was unusual in the past. Some destinations, like African safaris are booking into 2026 as many travelers have a renewed YOLO (You Only Live Once) attitude about travel post-pandemic.

AAA is on standby to assist travelers before, during, and after their trips. For those who need vacation inspiration, www.AAA.com/Travel and AAA’s TripCanvas are good starting points.

Safety Tips for Female Travelers

Group of woman enjoying cocktails

It’s always a good thing to review safety tips for women on the road. Women should not be afraid to travel alone–it’s doable and like most things in life, there is a manageable risk. The best advice we can give women is to follow the rules and you’ll minimize your chances of running into trouble. These tips might seem like common sense, but if you implement them into your travel style, we guarantee you’ll generally feel safer. Being over cautious might make you feel silly, but your safety is worth it.

Before You Go

  • Attempting to travel with a damaged passport - can lead to unpleasant surprises, trip delays, and added expense. Consulates will not place a stamp inside a damaged passport, and even in circumstances where a visa is not required, airline officials will not allow you to board. A passport that has water damage, a significant tear, unofficial markings on the data page, torn out visa pages, holes or other type of damage, will need to be replaced. On the other hand, normal wear, such as bending of a passport after carrying it in your back pocket or the fanning of pages after extensive opening and closing is to be expected and will not require replacement.
  • Be aware that electronic items - such as cell phones and laptops are subject to additional screening and that all metal items must be emptied from pockets and purses before going through airport metal detectors.
  • Buy travel insurance. - Trip insurance will cover some costs of travel and cancellation in case of an emergency. In addition, insurance companies offer 24/7 emergency assistance as part of their package. Check what types of events are not covered prior to your departure.
  • Carry medical and insurance information with you. - Lists of medications, medical conditions, health insurance information and contact information for your doctors at home should be with you at all times. Some insurance coverage provides access to doctors while traveling. Be sure to know how to access that help should you need it.
  • Do not leave luggage unattended - or carry anything on board an airplane for someone you don’t know.
  • Don’t pack car keys, travel documents, passports, visas or critical items or documents in checked luggage. - Place them in your carry on and keep them in the safe in your hotel room upon arrival.
  • Fill out the Emergency information page - in your passport so that authorities are better able to help you in the event of an emergency.
  • International Travelers - need to be diligent in not only getting the proper and required documents to submit for passports and visas but need to also take care to protect their passports from damage.
  • Leave a copy of your passport, travel itinerary and any other important documents - with a reliable person at home who can be contacted in the event that your documents are lost or stolen. An extra copy with an extra set of passport photos can also be carried in a separate bag and can prove to be a lifesaver if needed.
  • Plan on arriving at the airport - at least two hours in advance for domestic flights and three hours for international trips.
  • Research where you are staying and where you are going. - Don’t go into a city or book a hotel without researching the crime and safety of the neighborhood first. It takes a few extra minutes online, and you’ll thank yourself later when you show up to check in. In most cases, busy is better. Accommodations closer to the city center tend to be busier, more people are around, walking at night in the city center is typically safe and you won’t have to walk far to get home.
  • Tag all luggage - with both inside and outside identification that includes the ticketed passenger’s name, address and telephone number.
  • Visit www.travel.state.gov (State Department) - and pull the Consular Information Sheet about your destination. This sheet will provide invaluable information about a variety of topics including safety and security.

Tips To Keep Your Home Safe While Traveling

  • Keep it light and lifelike. - Use timers on lights, televisions, and radios to provide sound and illumination both inside and outside of your home.
  • Keep it up-to-date. - Make sure your homeowners or renters insurance is up to date and that all items are insured properly.
  • Keep it well-maintained. - Stop delivery of your mail and newspapers or have a neighbor or friend collect it while you’re away. In addition, arrange to have your lawn mowed and leave the air conditioner on. A silent compressor on a steamy day is a good indicator that no one’s home.
  • Keep valuables out of sight. - Expensive jewelry should not be kept in the bedroom, but instead in another room or in a safety deposit box at the bank.
  • Keep your home armed and secured. - Dead-bolt window and door locks. Invest in a burglar alarm that will alert police, fire or other emergency service providers.
  • Leave your contact information. - In case something should happen, make sure a trusted neighbor has your cell phone or hotel number.
  • Park it. - Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway, occasionally moving his or her car to indicate coming and going.
  • Take inventory. - Update or start an inventory of the belongings in your home. Create a list, take photos or make a video of your more valuable items. Write down the serial numbers of all valuable goods as this can make filing an insurance claim easier.

While Traveling

  • Be aware of your surroundings. - The worst possible thing you can do as a solo female traveler is to be oblivious. Be aware. You should know who is around you, peg potential threats and walk confidently. The most obvious identifier that you are a tourist is slumped posture and a tentative approach to your surroundings.
  • Be cautious. - Don’t let your guard down. Be aware of your surroundings. Keep your hotel room locked at all times and make sure you know who is at the door before opening it.
  • Check all closets, the bathroom and under the bed - to make sure nobody is hiding when entering the room. This can be especially helpful for women traveling alone. Asking a member of the bell staff to escort you to your room for the initial visit is another option. If you enter your room at any time and suspect that it has been entered by an unauthorized party, leave immediately and seek help from the front desk or the police.
  • Check your window to make sure it is locked and functioning as applicable. - This could prevent someone from getting in, but also prevent you from getting out in the event of a fire or other emergency.
  • Choose your purse carefully. - While a day pack designed with security features is ideal for travel you may prefer to carry a purse. If you do we recommend one that you wear across your torso.
  • Consider requesting a floor level that you are most comfortable with. - Some people feel more comfortable with a room which is not on the first floor due to concerns over forced entry through a window. While hotels cannot always accommodate a specific floor or range of floors it doesn’t hurt to ask. Rooms closer the elevator are also safer as you are not walking down long hallways. Rooms located by the elevator may be noisier.
  • Do Not Disturb - Other than when you want your room cleaned, hang the Do Not Disturb sign on your door even when you are gone. It makes others think you are inside the room. Leaving the radio, TV or a light on can do the same.
  • Don’t drink excessive amounts of alcohol or gather with those who do and never accept drinks from strangers. - While it is rare, young women can be drugged through a seemingly kind offer of a drink. In these rare cases, the women have been reportedly sexually assaulted.
  • Don’t leave bags unattended at any time.
  • Don’t make yourself a target - by wearing expensive jewelry, and don’t carry excessive amounts of cash or credit cards.
  • Dress conservatively. - Revealing tops and short skirts should be fine but, in reality, they can get you into trouble in many countries, including North America and Europe. You are always more vulnerable when you’re off your home turf so compensate by dressing conservatively.
  • Familiarize yourself with the two closest emergency exits - as soon as you arrive.
  • Follow your instincts. - 9 times out of 10, your instinct is right. If you feel threatened in any way, or get “a bad” feeling about a situation, follow that instinct and get out fast. Change your walking path by taking a different street, lock your things up in a hostel locker, don’t trust other travelers with your well-being. The more you travel, the more you’ll hone those instincts. Trust them.
  • Have a backup plan. Always. - Don’t let yourself get lost. Always know where you are, and have at least two plans to get home. If you have to take a night bus, think about the best place to call a cab.
  • Have patience. - It can take a day or two to get solo stable — to shed those initial nerves of being out there on your own managing all the details, logistics and documents. Be patient. You’ll find your strength.
  • Heed travel warnings and advice - for example, avoid deserted areas of beaches where applicable.
  • If you think you’re being followed. - Cross the street. Do a 180 turn. Walk toward a well-lit area. Head for a group of people. Accelerate. Enter a nearby business. If the person is still following you after you’ve changed your path, turn around and scream “what do you want?” This will probably scare them away. The tone of your voice has a lot to do with labeling you as a target, or someone to avoid. If you’re being followed by a car, turn around. It’ll take them a lot longer to turn around and follow you again. Never put yourself in a situation where you’re walking alone at night.
  • If your room adjoins another, - check to make sure the door is securely locked.
  • Never allow your room number to be announced by the front desk clerk. - If it is, ask for another room and ask the clerk to write the number down for you.
  • Only travel in clearly marked taxis. - Do not accept rides from strangers.
  • Other women are not necessarily safe. - Women often feel safer with other women. And, when it comes to small time danger, we probably are. But there are also dangerous women who are just as capable of luring you into bad situations as men. Be cautious.
  • Participate in water sports from reputable vendors. - Make sure that you are sufficiently trained on the use of equipment and inquire about the operators who carry medical and liability insurance.
  • Plan your first night well. - At minimum, have a place to rest your head on the first night and plan to arrive by midafternoon. It’s important to have the time to find your hotel or hostel in daylight and have time to get acquainted with your surroundings.
  • Store Money and Documents in Multiple Locations. - Always keep your passport and huge cash bills in another location than your wallet. The more “hiding places” you have for your valuables the better. Spreading out your money and documents in your things means they will steal less in the event you are robbed. Always carry a backup credit card, or two, on your person. Passport security belts that go under your clothes are invaluable.
  • Take care of your feet. - Nothing will ruin a trip faster than sore feet. Women’s shoes are notoriously bad for feet. Choose comfort over fashion.
  • Take out your headphones. - Headphones make you an easy target. You can’t hear anyone coming up behind you. You can’t hear the announcer in the train station. You get involved in the music and before you know it, you’re an easy-target. Save the ear buds for the actual transportation portion of your trip.
  • Test that the phone is working. - Make sure you know how to make an outside call and test your ability to do so.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

aaa travel warnings

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

aaa travel warnings

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Bucket Lists : Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

  Travel Agent Survey

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

8 Helpful Things 50-Plus Travelers Never Knew They Need to Do Before Traveling

Research is key but don’t forget to have a conversation.

a passport, person tipping, European currency and an airplane

Judy Mandell,

If you are getting ready to travel, you probably have a pre-travel checklist that you follow. TSA PreCheck ? Active. Passport ? Check. But if you haven’t traveled in a while, you might not know where to start checking for the necessary information and documentation .

After the record number of passengers screened in 2023, David Pekoske, the administrator of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), said earlier this year that the agency expects the trend to continue this year. Indeed, 65 percent of people 50-plus plan to travel this year, according to the AARP 2024 Travel Trends survey .

As you prepare to travel this summer, here are eight tips you never knew to follow before taking a trip.

1. Call the non-U.S. 800 number for airlines

Peter Greenberg, the travel editor for CBS News, wants travelers to not rely solely on online research when booking a trip. “The websites are by design misleading because the presumption that people make, which is false, is that they’re seeing all the availability and inventory on their screen. They’re not.”

Greenberg suggests having a conversation with a travel agent, travel adviser or travel provider to find the full availability that often isn’t depicted online. Instead of being put on hold on a U.S.-based airline 800 number, call an 800 number for United Airlines in London, American Airlines in Dublin or Delta Airlines in Paris, he says. “They are open 24/7. They won’t put you on hold. And they’re seeing the same thing on their screen that the headquarters are seeing” in Chicago, Dallas or Atlanta, Greenberg says.

2. Check the expiration date on your passport

Many countries, including most of Europe, Morocco, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Thailand, will not let you enter if your passport expires in less than six months. Check the U.S. State Department’s travel site for more details.

3. Get an international driver’s permit

Do you plan to drive overseas? If so, there are some countries that require an International Driving Permit, says William Lee, the head of marketing for Chima Travel in northeast Ohio. According to usa.gov, if you visit Canada or Mexico, your state driver’s license is all you need. However, a trip to Spain or Greece will require an International Driving Permit. “The process to get one is actually really simple,” Lee says. Before you travel, either visit AAA in person or online. AAA is the only entity that issues the permit in the U.S. Supply two passport-style photos or have the pictures taken at certain AAA offices. The fee for the permit is $20, plus processing and delivery fees. You don’t need to be a member of AAA to use this service.

4. Book the first flight of the day on an airline not based in your city

Greenberg says advice to take the very first flight of the day is nothing new. “What is new is to take the first flight of the day on an airline that’s not based in your city,” he says. “You want to take the first flight on a plane that overnighted, which means the crew stayed with that plane; the plane is ready to go, and your odds of getting out on time first thing in the morning are infinitely increased.” Greenberg adds it could be a problem if you are waiting for a plane to arrive from somewhere else.

5. Apply for entrance authorization

In 2025, the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will require passport holders from more than 60 visa-exempt countries to apply for approval to enter 30 European countries. Previously, countries such as France, Germany and Greece did not require advance approval to enter for visits of less than 90 days. Once the program is running, travelers to Europe will fill out the form online or via a mobile app and pay a 7 euro charge (about $7.54, depending on exchange rates; free for applicants 70 and older). And don’t forget about visas. “You just need to search for ‘country + visa requirements,’ ” Lee says.

6. Research local currency and exchange rates

“Many travelers get ripped off due to a lack of research,” says Michael Sawyer, operations director at Ultimate Kilimanjaro, a company that specializes in assisting people who want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Sawyer suggests exchanging some currency prior to your departure or getting a travel debit card.

7. Search for tipping etiquette

Sawyer says tipping customs vary greatly depending on the city or country. “Knowing how to tip at restaurants and other services can assist in avoiding awkward situations,” he says.

8. Download offline maps and other key apps

If you are traveling to a destination with limited internet access, it’s good to have these products readily available, Sawyer says. City-specific apps can provide information on attractions, public transportation and restaurant recommendations.

How AAA Members Can Save Big Money When Traveling

I f you're a frequent traveler, you're no stranger to all the ways you can save money so you can travel more often. From travel credit card perks to airfare booking strategies , you've probably got it all figured out. However, you might be surprised when we say that if you're not a AAA (American Automobile Association) member, you might be missing out on amazing deals.

AAA is a non-profit organization -- technically a federation of motor clubs -- that is dedicated to enhancing its members' travel experiences throughout the U.S.A. It offers a range of benefits that can significantly contribute to cost savings for your trips while also providing peace of mind while on the road.

Perks range from 24/7 roadside assistance to exclusive discounts on car rentals and hotel stays. However, you won't just get perks for road trips -- AAA will also take to the skies with you with deals on airfare and travel abroad with all-inclusive trips to Mexico , the Caribbean , and beyond.

AAA 'S Membership Tiers Offer Great Value For Travelers

Since it was established in 1902, AAA has reliably served travelers across the United States. Now, with a century of experience, it has become a trusted organization best known for its comprehensive travel services.

AAA offers three main membership levels: Classic, Plus, and Premier, all with incredible perks. The Classic membership is the basic tier, but there's nothing simple about it. This tier still provides all the essential services, such as roadside assistance, $60 dollars toward locksmith services, and access to travel resources. However, it also includes discounts on rental cars, identity theft protection, and expedited passport and travel visa services.

The second-tier Plus membership includes all of that but simply in greater amounts. For example, you get 100 miles of towing (whereas Classic provides 7), emergency fuel delivery that is completely free (including the fuel), along with 50% off European travel guides.

The Premier membership offers the highest level of coverage and benefits and includes everything from the Plus and Classic tiers with even greater discounts. Premier members can expect to receive amazing extras like one-day free car rentals and concierge services for those bougie budget-conscious travelers.

Membership costs will vary depending on your zip code and the level chosen. For example, the Classic tier in California costs around $36 per year but in neighboring Arizona goes up to $65. No matter the cost, considering the potential savings and benefits, the value received should make it worth your while.

Get Great Discounts On Travel With AAA

Through its extensive network of partnerships, AAA members can save a trunkload of money. As a member, you will gain access to a wide range of discounted travel options, including all-inclusive resort or cruise packages or piecemeal -- if you like to book things separately -- hotel accommodations, car rentals, and airfare.

For example, when booking hotel accommodations, AAA members often receive discounted rates that can range from 5 to 10% off the regular prices for hotels chains like Hilton, Best Western, and MGM. This means significant savings on popular hotels and resorts located both in the U.S. and worldwide. You'll even earn loyalty points when you book through AAA , which can be applied towards your next membership renewal.

Similarly, when renting a car, AAA members can benefit from discounted rates (up to 35% on electric vehicles ), free upgrades, and additional perks like fuel discounts with their main partner Hertz or budget car rental companies like Thrifty and Dollar. AAA will even waive the additional driver and young renters fees if you're between the ages of 20 to 24.

AAA Offers Members Expert Travel Planning Support

While all the roadside assistance is great for long road trips, what really makes the organization stand out is that it's actually the largest travel agency in the U.S. Their advisors are available to chat with you in-person or virtually. AAA travel agents won't just help you plan an amazing trip but they can also find you the best deals through their exclusive discounts.

If you're thinking about planning a road trip , AAA also offers their own travel app called TripTik. This is an interactive road trip planning tool that can help you plan out stops along your route for gas and rest stops, restaurants, hotels, and attractions. If you need some inspiration, the app also has 600 pre-planned scenic drives including recommended stops.

For those who enjoy the analog versions of things, AAA is one of the few organizations that still offer paper maps to its members for free. However, if you prefer digital, they haven't forgotten you. You can grab AAA's digital TourBooks which provide access to information about destinations across North America and the Caribbean.

Get Everything You Need To Travel In One Place

Now that you know where you want to go, you just have to get there. Luckily, AAA offices can be your one-stop-shop for (almost) all your official documents.

If you know you have air travel planned soon, and you don't have a passport or need to renew it quickly and/or you need a travel visa, head to your nearest AAA office instead of the post office or passport office. With AAA , you can take your passport photos (at a discount for AAA members) and get your passport and visa application expedited through AAA 's connections with RushMyPassport.

If you're planning to drive while abroad, you may also want to consider grabbing an International Driving Permit (IDP). Since a U.S. Driver's License is not accepted in all countries, an IDP is a surefire way to avoid issues. An IDP can also reduce issues with language barriers and it may be required to rent a car. The best part is that with AAA you can get an IDP the same day you apply for only $20, plus additional (but still discounted) fees for the passport photos required for the document.

Lastly, to be prepared for any eventuality that may occur on your trip, you can also purchase automotive and travel insurance through AAA . They partner with Allianz Global Assistance so members can take advantage of insurance policies that cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, and emergency medical coverage.

AAA expects second-busiest Memorial Day travel weekend on record; Bend again the top regional destination

Bend is almost always the top regional travel destination for a holiday, and Memorial Day 2024 is no exception., AAA says.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Memorial Day 2024 is expected to be the second busiest on record, AAA said Monday. AAA projects 43.8 million Americans (13% of the population) will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend, an increase of 4% over 2023, and comes close to matching the record of 44 million travelers in 2005.

In the Pacific Region, Region (AK, CA, HI, OR, WA), 7.5 million people (14.2% of the population) are expected to travel, a 4.7% increase compared to 2023.

About 600,000 Oregonians will travel over the long weekend. The Memorial Day travel period is defined as Thursday, May 23 through Monday, May 27.

2024 will see the most travelers for Memorial Day in nearly 20 years and will exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2019. In all, nearly two million more people will travel for the unofficial start of summer compared to last year, a sign of a very busy travel season ahead,” says Doreen Loofburrow, Senior Vice President of Travel at AAA Oregon/Idaho.

“This Memorial Day will set records. Road trips will see the highest number ever for the holiday and air travel will rise to the highest volume since 2005,” says Marie Dodds, public affairs director for AAA Oregon/Idaho.

Memorial Day Travel Forecast 2024

Top Memorial Day Destinations

AAA booking data reveals that theme parks, beaches and larger cities are the most popular destinations domestically and abroad, based on searches and bookings by members of AAA Oregon/Idaho.

Anaheim and Orlando are top domestic destinations as Memorial Day travelers head to theme parks. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver, B.C. rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the list of international destinations.

AAA offers an entire library of digital resources to make your trip more enjoyable and it’s all available in one convenient spot at  AAA.com/TripCanvas .  If you are looking for maps or our Digital TourBooks, visit  AAA.com/maps . You can download entire books or print the pages you’d like to bring with you. The TripTik Travel Planner provides turn-by-turn directions to keep you on the best route. With the AAA mobile app, you can request emergency road service, book a last-minute hotel, and even find the cheapest fuel and closest EV charging stations along the way. Download it at  AAA.com/mobile  or visit the App Store or Google Play.

Travel trends for Memorial Day and the rest of summer

As travelers make plans for Memorial Day, the summer travel season, and beyond, AAA Travel is seeing these trends:

  • Bucket lists: Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Milestones: Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia: More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo trips: More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury vacations: More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains: Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in nature: Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

Road trips will set record

Most Memorial Day travelers – about 88% – will take a road trip. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for the holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019.

In Oregon, roughly 494,000 will drive to their Memorial Day destinations.

“Traveling by car is appealing for many because of the convenience and flexibility it provides, and it can be more cost effective than taking the entire family on flights,” says Dodds.

Memorial Day Travel Forecast 2024

Air travel will see highest volume since 2005; airfares similar to last year

Airports are gearing up for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 air travelers over the Memorial Day weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. In all, about 8% of holiday travelers will fly to their destinations. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11.

In Oregon, more than 63,000 will fly to their Memorial Day destinations.

This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. The average cost for a roundtrip domestic flight is $778.

International flights are 4% more expensive compared to last year, averaging $1485 for a roundtrip ticket.

Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Memorial Day Travel Forecast 2024

Tips for those flying this Memorial Day:

  • Check your airline’s website or download their app to keep up to date on your flight status, including checking one last time right before you leave for the airport. Allow push notifications so the airline can alert you of any changes.
  • Check-in online for flights 24 hours ahead
  • Arrive at the airport at least two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international. Security lines may be longer than usual due to the spike in travelers.
  • Airport parking lots will likely be at or near capacity. Many airports including Portland International airport let you check current availability.  https://www.flypdx.com/Parking
  • Consider taking transit, using a ride sharing service or taxi, or getting a ride with a friend or family member to the airport so you don’t have to park onsite.
  • Avoid checking a bag, if possible, especially if you don’t have a non-stop flight. Bring all medications in your carry-on bag, as well as a change of clothes and any other necessities. That way you’ll have provisions if your checked bag gets lost or delayed.
  • Plan ahead for meals and snacks. Some airlines let you pre-order food for your flight.
  • Consider booking a flight during non-peak travel periods to cut down on wait times. In general, early morning flights tend to have fewer delays and cancellations than flights later in the day.
  • Sign up for TSA PreCheck before your trip. However, even these expedited security check-in lanes will be busier than usual.

Big boost in other modes of travel

AAA projects 1.9 million people will travel by other modes including cruise ships, buses, and trains. This is up 5.6% compared to last year.

“These modes saw significant decreases during the pandemic as cruise lines were shut down and fewer people used public transportation. Five years later, these numbers are back to pre-pandemic levels,” says Loofburrow.

Memorial Day Travel Forecast 2024

Best and worst times to drive

AAA has partnered with INRIX, a global provider of transportation data and insights, to determine the best and worst times to drive over the long holiday weekend. Drivers leaving Thursday or Friday before Memorial Day should hit the road early to avoid mixing with afternoon and evening commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

On Thursday and Friday afternoons and evenings, delays on major roads could be two times longer than normal travel times as holiday travelers mix with commuters.

“Traffic volumes will be heavier than usual throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend, but knowing the best and worst times to drive can help you avoid major congestion and delays. Use traffic apps, 511 services and local traffic reports to get the latest info on how traffic is moving.

Try to avoid the peak travel times and avoid driving through urban areas when commuters are also hitting the roads to head home,” says Dodds. “Whenever you go, expect longer travel times than usual to get to your destination.”

Memorial Day Travel Forecast 2024

Here are projected travel times from INRIX showing drive times out of Portland:

Memorial Day Travel Forecast 2024

Gas prices similar to last year

The national and Oregon averages for regular gas are similar to Memorial Day 2023 and significantly less than 2022, when gas prices were at record highs for the holiday.

The national average is currently $3.62 and the Oregon average is $4.42 (as of May 13). Find current gas prices at  https://gasprices.aaa.com/

Memorial Day Travel Forecast 2024

Pump prices saw typical spring run-ups this year and have cooled off in the last few weeks. The wildcard remains the price of crude oil, which is impacted by global unrest including the wars between Israel and Hamas, and Russia and Ukraine.

For local news releases on gas prices, visit  https://info.oregon.aaa.com/oregon-gas-prices/

Hotels similar, rental cars cost less this year

Hotels—bookings through AAA show that domestic hotels are 5% cheaper this Memorial Day weekend compared to last year. The average cost for a stay (which is typically a few nights) is $500.

International hotels cost about the same as last year with the average at $660.

Car Rentals—domestic car rentals are 17% cheaper this Memorial Day weekend compared to last year. The average total cost for a rental (which is typically for a few days) is $439.

International car rentals are 16% cheaper this Memorial Day weekend compared to 2023. The average total cost for a rental (which is typically for a few days) is $617.

AAA to the rescue this Memorial Day weekend

AAA expects to rescue about 378,000 motorists nationally and 5,000 in Oregon this Memorial Day weekend, with the most common issues being dead batteries, lockouts and flat tires.

AAA makes it easy to request assistance—by phone or text (1-800-AAA-HELP),  app  or  online —and members can track the service technician’s progress as they make their way to your vehicle.

Make sure your car is road-trip ready. Have your vehicle inspected by a trusted repair shop, such as one of the more than 7,000  AAA Approved Auto Repair  facilities across North America.

Be prepared for emergencies with a mobile phone and car charger and/or charging cable, a flashlight with extra batteries, a first-aid kit, a basic toolkit, and drinking water and snacks for all passengers and pets. Share your itinerary with family or friends so that authorities know where to start looking for you if you don’t reach your destination.

Find more info on getting road-trip ready at  AAA.com/summerprep

Travel agents, travel insurance are travel essentials:

AAA recommends working with a travel agent and considering travel and medical insurance options.

“A travel agent is an expert on the places you want to go and can help you plan a trip that meets your needs and budget. Travel agents can help you get the most out of your travel dollars as they often have access to special offers and rates that aren’t always available to the general public. And if something goes wrong – from a flight cancellation to a medical emergency – or you need to make last-minute changes, your travel agent becomes your advocate,” says Loofburrow.

AAA strongly recommends you consider travel insurance and/or medical insurance to cover unexpected delays or trip interruptions, or medical care you need when away from home. Travel insurance provides a safety net should something unexpected happen ahead of or during your trip. Medical travel insurance can provide coverage for illness and injuries and that may not be included in your regular health insurance plan. Travel agents can also advise on what travel insurance or  medical insurance policy makes the most sense for your trip.

“With a record number of air travelers expected for Memorial Day, AAA recommends that you protect your investment with the peace of mind provided by a travel agent, travel insurance, and medical insurance,” says Loofburrow. “Things can go sideways on your trip and it’s good to be ready if the unexpected happens.”

“And use your AAA membership to find discounts and rewards,” adds Dodds.

A cold front will likely be key to which parts of the U.S. could face severe weather over Memorial Day weekend.

May 13 (UPI) -- The American Automobile Association, better known as AAA, on Monday released data which estimates nearly 44 million American travelers will leave town in what will be the second highest Memorial Day travel forecast since 2000 when data was first available.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said in a release.

AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will go 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which they said was a 4% increase from 2023 and comes close to matching the record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers in 2005.

"We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead," the AAA executive added.

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this Memorial Day weekend, a 4.8% increase over last year and a 9% jump compared to 2019.

"This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005," AAA advised travelers.

In addition, AAA said nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation which includes buses, cruise ships and trains, a 5.6% increase compared to 2023.

AAA defines this year's Memorial Day holiday travel period as the five-day period from May 23 to Monday, May 27.

Last year, AAA said that it was also expecting an uptick in travel over the 2023 Memorial Day weekend, although at the time road trips were reported to have not bounced back to pre-pandemic levels despite a temporary slide in gas prices.

But road travelers are also being advised to plan travel times accordingly to avoid and lessen traffic congestion.

"Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal," said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, who likewise advised travelers to "stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary."

AAA noted "the wildcard" remains the cost of oil because, unlike last year, there are now additional world military conflicts that could roil and impact the oil market.

In 2023, AAA projected 42.3 million Americans would travel 50 miles or more to a destination which was up 2.7 million people -- or 7% -- from 2022 the year prior.

But the price of gas this Memorial Day, however, is expected to be similar to last year when the national average was roughly $3.57, according to AAA.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said. "Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway."

But travel insiders have predicted that in 2024 people will plan more solo adventure trips, travel to Europe more and try out new things like 3D printed food.

This comes as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in early April that it will increase travel fees for some of the most well-known Trusted Travel Programs.

A recent American Express Travel report found that travelers are more focused on creating the right itineraries for their vacations, leaning towards sporting events, unusual adventures and solo travels that are taken on a whim.

However, the cost of traveling, including airfare and food costs is likely to keep rising with some companies focusing more on affordability as inflation is viewed as slowly getting under control.

The AAA travel statistics also come days after Illinois-based grocery chain Aldi announced that they have dropped the price of over 250 grocery items in stores nationwide to help customers fight "stubborn inflation" and better enjoy the summer.
