Active Travel Hub

September 7, 2020, a key element of dundee’s waterfront place development is underway as the city’s first active travel hub takes shape..

The only building on the site will promote cycling and other forms of sustainable and low carbon travel to visitors and residents of Dundee and have immediate access to the National Cycle Network that runs alongside the Tay and across to Fife.

After a tendering process it will be run by Angus Cycle Hub Community Interest Company (CIC), a not for profit social enterprise dedicated to supporting cycling and active travel.

Angus Cycle Hub project director Scott Francis said: “We are absolutely delighted to confirm we will be partnering with Dundee City Council and other stakeholders to deliver a range of community-based initiatives from the new building to continue to develop the city’s cycling and active travel renaissance.

“It’s a really exciting project for us and we hope to be able to bring the lessons learned from the projects we have been running in the Angus region to also benefit the Dundee area.”

Mark Flynn convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “Active travel infrastructure isn’t just about decent routes, well surfaced paths or signage, it’s also about knowing there’s somewhere to go to meet other people, get advice on routes or have your bike adjusted. It’s also good to have a destination where you can get a seat and a hot drink and a bite to eat.

“Angus Cycle Hub is a welcome addition to the city and we look forward to partnering with them to grow the opportunities for walking, cycling and scooting for everyone.”

It is intended that the hub will provide a prominent location to support the uptake of low carbon and active transport in Dundee and the wider area with facilities including bike hire, cycle parking, bike maintenance, community outreach and a kiosk for snacks.

It is hoped that the active travel hub, which has been supported by grants from Transport Scotland and nearly £1.2m from the European Regional Development Fund (Low Carbon Travel & Transport), will be up and running by early summer next year.

Active travel hub at the heart of Dundee’s waterfront

Securing funding and setting up Dundee's first cycle hub

DundeeCycleHub-1

Specialist support to create an active travel hub at the heart of Dundee's waterfront

Our work started with the original feasibility study for Dundee City Council, writing a successful grant application that secured £1.2 million of funding from Transport Scotland.

We were then commissioned to advise on the design of the hub, the operating model, and to procure a supplier to run the hub. This involved close working with the city council and local groups involved in promoting cycling and walking.

The hub is located in the heart of the city’s flagship waterfront development and integrated with key cycle routes across Dundee. It includes cycle hire, bike maintenance, facilities for community engagement and events, information on low carbon/active travel, cycle tours and routes.

The project aims to encourage active and sustainable travel amongst local people and visitors and raise awareness of low carbon transport. It supporting behaviour change, improved air quality, personal health and economic regeneration.

Waterfront Active Travel Hub

Infrastructure and access to cycling for everyone.

waterfront active hub

Making cycling an attractive and realistic option for short destination-driven trips can bring many benefits to health, the economy, and the environment.

However, inequalities in active travel options for young people and marginalised families can reduce the adoption of sustainable transport alternatives.

To tackle this problem, Urban Foresight will work with Angus Cycle Hub on a pilot project for a central bike distribution centre. This hub will support the Angus and Dundee areas with active transport facilities, community outreach, and more.

The project will tie into existing services and infrastructure already provided by Angus Cycle Hub. This will include the Active Travel Hub at the Waterfront in Dundee, with facilities including bike hire, cycle parking, bike maintenance, and community outreach.

The project will benefit from Urban Foresight’s deep experience of innovation hubs, sustainable mobility and accessibility. Specifically, we will support the overall management and evaluation of the project. Our goal is to deliver a genuinely impactful project and build a long-term sustainable future at the heart of the Dundee and Angus communities.

“Urban Foresight is passionate about creating inclusive environments in mobility said Gary McRae, Urban Foresight. “Providing specialist support for young people to engage with cycling, training, and active travel will encourage a future generation to think positively about sustainable travel.”

This award builds on recent high profile projects Urban Foresight has done in the Dundee and Angus areas. This includes the Angus Rural Mobility Hub, the 2020 Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan for Angus Council, and a feasibility study for a Green Travel Hub in Forfar.

LANDMARK DUNDEE WATERFRONT URBAN BEACH OPENS

43_Morgan_sindall_AR

  • August 10, 2021

active travel hub dundee

Dundee waterfront’s ongoing renaissance has reached a new milestone with the official opening of Waterfront Place. The striking urban beach, active travel hub, and interactive play area were given the seal of approval by John Alexander, leader of Dundee City Council, at a ceremony held next to the V&A – Scotland’s first design museum.

The landmark site is seen as a key catalyst for the wider £1 billion regeneration of the city. Morgan Sindall Construction was selected by the local authority to deliver the £6 million project in early 2020.

Work has been carried out in line with Scottish Government guidance on the safe operation of construction sites during COVID-19. The main contractor has worked closely with the council’s development team to ensure minimal delays to the programme; with the decision taken to open the urban beach now, at the height of summer, while the finishing touches are put to the rest site over the coming weeks.

Chief among those is the installation of a striking stainless-steel whale sculpture designed by award-winning British artist Lee Simmons. Morgan Sindall Construction was awarded a separate £1.7m contract earlier this year to manufacture and install the centrepiece. Comprised of tubular sections, it will flow from the northern entrance of Waterfront Place with the tail arching towards the Tay to capture a sense of movement.

The landscaped 7,000 square foot urban beach is surrounded by bench seating and features illuminated footpaths to encourage all-day usage.  The 2,150 square foot active travel hub features a striking design in homage to the adjacent V&A museum.

In addition to providing cycle hire and storage, the building will serve as a meeting point and source of information; promoting cycling and other forms of sustainable low carbon travel to residents and visitors. It provides immediate access to the National Cycle Network that runs alongside the Tay.

Stuart Parker, managing director of Morgan Sindall Construction in Scotland, said: “This has been a momentous project to be entrusted with and one we’ve taken great pride in delivering. It will spur the ongoing renaissance of this great coastal city’s waterfront area, meaningfully promote active lifestyles and low carbon transport, while enhancing the experience for local people and visitors alike.

“We’ve worked hand-in-glove with the city council to reach this milestone before the end of summer and the urban beach is sure to be a major hit in the August sunshine.

“The installation of the whale sculpture in September will be a real spectacle and add a final injection of creativity and identity to what is already a striking vista.”

John Alexander, leader of Dundee City Council, added: “This is one of the prime spots on the whole of the waterfront and right from the planning stage it was important that it could be accessed and used by everyone.

“Anyone who comes along will see for themselves the quality of the work, which was in itself a key part of our desire to attract people here, not just from the city but across Scotland, so that they could truly experience the re-established connection between the city and the river.

“It forms the next step forward in our phased and managed growth at the waterfront and the months and years ahead will see much more to come on the other sites across the area.”

The Waterfront Place project was awarded funding as part of the Low Carbon Travel and Transport Challenge Fund established by Transport Scotland, from funds awarded under European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2014-2020 programme.

Waterfront Place Active Travel hub

1st June 2018

active travel hub dundee

AN EVENT which brings together eateries and environmentalists to discuss what an active travel hub at Dundee Waterfront could look like is set to take place later this month.

The free event will share ideas and suggestions with café owners, cyclists, walkers and environmental groups about the best way to create and operate the new active travel hub.

It is intended that the hub will provide a prominent location to support the uptake of low carbon and active transport in Dundee and the wider area.

Facilities could include bike hire, cycle parking, bike maintenance, electric vehicle (EV) charge points, an EV car club, community outreach and cafe.

Lynne Short convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, who is one of the speakers at the event said: “No one has a monopoly on good ideas and I am really pleased that we can bring together some dedicated and committed business people, volunteers and participants to talk about how best to deliver this important part of the waterfront development."

Cllr Kevin Cordell who speaks for the council on cycling added; “Cycling infrastructure is not just about decent routes or well surfaced tracks, it’s also about being able to meet fellow cyclists and when needed know there is somewhere to get your bike repaired, or simply to have a cold drink and a rest!

“The active travel hub is intended to provide that and a whole load more.”

Planned for the new Waterfront Place next to the V&A Dundee and with views across the Tay it is intended that the hub will attract active and low carbon visitors from near and far.

For the chance to hear more about the project, and find out how your organisation could get involved, register to attend the June 28 event at Shore Terrace on EventBrite searching for “Waterfront ATH” or by visiting the event on the DACC website

SSEN Transmission

SSEN Transmission

We are SSEN Transmission, the trading name for Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission.

We are responsible for the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, maintaining and investing in the high voltage 132kV, 220kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network.

Our network consists of underground and subsea cables, overhead lines on  wooden poles or steel towers, and electricity substations. It extends over a quarter of the UK’s land mass, crossing some of its most challenging terrain.

Our first priority is to provide a safe and reliable supply of electricity to our communities. We do this by taking the electricity from generators and transporting it at high voltages over long distances through our transmission network for onwards distribution to homes and businesses in villages, towns and cities.

Our operating area is home to vast renewable energy resources and this is being harnessed by wind, hydro and marine generation. Working closely with National Grid, the GB transmission System Operator, we also enable these electricity generators to connect to the transmission system by providing their connections and allowing the electricity generated by them to be transported to areas of demand across the country.

Scotland’s transmission network has a strategic role to play in supporting delivery of the UK and Scotland’s Net Zero targets. We’re already a mass exporter of renewable energy, with around two thirds of power generated in our network area exported to demand centres further south. By 2050, the north of Scotland is expected to need 40GW of low carbon energy capacity to support net zero delivery. For context, we currently have over 9GW of renewable generation connected in the north of Scotland.

As a natural monopoly, we are closely regulated by the GB energy regulator, Ofgem, who determines how much revenue we are allowed to earn for constructing, maintaining and renovating our transmission network in the north of Scotland. These costs are shared between all those using the transmission system, including generation developers and electricity consumers.

Following a minority stake sale which completed in November 2022, we are now owned 75% by SSE plc and 25% by Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board.

As a stakeholder-led business, SSEN Transmission is committed to inclusive stakeholder engagement, and we conduct this at an ‘Advanced’ level as assessed by AccountAbility, the international consulting and standards firm.

New images have revealed plans for six active travel routes connected to the re-development of Bell Street car park.

Dundee City Council has received £14 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund to transform the Bell Street multi-storey into a sustainable transport hub over the next three years.

As part of this project, the local authority has commissioned Stantec – an international consultancy agency – to improve the active travel routes connected to the hub.

Six key areas have been identified as locations for further routes, which includes Reform Street, Bell Street, and Ward Road.

CGI images of the proposals have now been released as part of a online survey asking members of the public for their feedback.

The survey will run for seven weeks from November 21 to January 9.

1 – Reform Street

2 – Victoria Road

The Bell Street redevelopment is expected to begin next year and – when completed –  will see 350 electrical vehicle charging points, car share spaces, and an e-bike hire installed at the site.

The car parking capacity at the multi-storey would also be reduced by around half.

A building warrant application for works valued at £7 million was submitted by Dundee City Council’s transport department earlier this month.

3 – Bell Street

4 – Constitution Road

The six active travel routes connected to the Bell Street hub are the latest in the series of proposed changes in several areas of Dundee.

In June images were revealed for five “active freeway” routes on busy city roads .

These included Arbroath Road, Pitkerro Road and Macalpine Road, and would see normal traffic segregated from those walking, cycling or using other travel methods such as wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs.

It came after a similar proposals were published in March for Lochee Road, Coupar Angus Road and Liff Road.

5 – Ward Road

Anyone wishing to contribute to the consultation can visit the scheme’s website and fill out the  feedback survey .

Cycling

Active travel simply means making journeys by physically active means - like walking, scooting or cycling.

Positive impacts include:

  • Reduced traffic congestion
  • Reduced air pollution
  • Better physical, mental and social health
  • Smaller carbon footprint to reduce negative impact of climate change.

Good infrastructure for walking and cycling is important, but people also need encouragement, support and guidance to change their behaviours and switch their journeys to either walking or cycling.

We work with all Dundee Primary Schools and deliver a wide programme of walking, scooting and cycling activities to support children learning to ride a bike and working towards achieving Bikeability level 2 award and making more positive choices in relation to travel to and from school. We host a number of physical initiatives to engage and inspire kids to achieve this. Our support is mainly delivered during the school day and we are working towards getting all schools developing a school travel plan where we can help them overcome key issues and concerns facing them and finding ways to work towards a more actively travelling lifestyle for their children and staff.

Our key goal is to transform our city with the help of Dundee City Council, Parent, Volunteers, Teachers and of course Children to a place where our journeys matter and become more enjoyable.

Bikeability Scotland is the national cycle training programme for school children from P5 to S2. It supports the next generation of confident and responsible road users. Sessions are mostly delivered in primary and secondary schools. The ability to ride a bike is essential to participate in the programme.

Level One This entry level is designed to focus on fun activities while strengthening bike skills. Each of the sessions are delivered in an off road, traffic free setting - typically a playground.

Level Two This level focuses on making short journeys on quieter roads, with an emphasis on signalling and observation.

Level Three Planning a journey and the use of more challenging routes like multi-lane roads and roundabouts are the main focus for this session.

Equipment and Kit Information Bikes and helmets will be provided but bringing your own bike is always welcomed. For more information please visit https://www.cycling.scot/bikeability-scotland

The award supports Scottish primary and secondary schools to improve facilities and increase the opportunities for children to cycle to school. From the initial registration through to assessment, we work closely with teachers, parents and pupils to help them achieve the award and schools are supported through each step of the process towards becoming Cycling Friendly. For more information please visit https://www.cycling.scot/what-we-do/cycling-friendly

The support of Bikeability Scotland instructors is key to the creation of the next generation of confident and responsible cyclists. Without our instructors, many of whom are volunteers cycle training would be beyond the reach of many primary schools, and pupils would miss out on learning a valuable life skill. For more information please visit https://www.cycling.scot/bikeability-scotland/instructors

In any of our programmes we provide basic bike maintenance because riding a bike would be worthless if you haven't been taught to do it safely.

For example, do you know what an M-check is? How high your saddle should be? Or, does it matter how hard you pump the tyres?

Our aim is to have all Dundee P6 and P7 pupils learn to ride a bike and go on to achieve level 2 – on-road Bikeability award, so to find out if your school is taking part, simply ask your school to confirm if they have arranged this with us and if not please help us by speaking up and encouraging the school through parent council forum to get in touch with us so no one misses out on this great resource offer.

Our company works alongside many local authorities, including schools, businesses, and leisure facilities in Dundee City and across the UK.

With so many benefits coming from active travel, we want to make walking and cycling more accessible in all communities so people can become healthier and happier at home.

What is Active Travel?

Active Travel is an initiative that focuses on reducing congestion, carbon emission, and health issues in Dundee City and all regions across the UK and on increasing active travel, such as walking and cycling.

With walkways and cycling routes, we aim to encourage people to ditch public transport and their cars for healthier movement during their everyday journeys.

When it is easier to travel around your local area by foot or bike, we can reduce the number of car journeys and the demand for public transport.

Not only does active travel improve your health, but it can also drastically reduce carbon emissions in any area. You can improve your health and the environment by opting for walking and cycling instead of going by car.

Active Travel in

As a Dundee City surfacing company, we are working as part of the Active Travel plan to make walking and cycling more accessible in all regions. We create walkways, cycling routes, and path infrastructure for wheelchair users to encourage people to get outdoors.

It is easier to walk or cycle when there are spaces in your community for this, which is where we come in.

We aim to deliver great service to all our clients and want to make it easier for people to get to school, the shops or simply around the town without using public transport or their car.

As well as making walking and cycling easier for everyone, the Active Travel initiative educates people in business, children in schools, and other community members regarding the importance of active travel for both health and the environment.

We are committed to making Dundee City a healthy and safe place for everyone, so we offer Active Travel, walking and cycling infrastructure installation nationwide.

What are Examples of Active Travel?

Active travel refers to modes of transportation that involve physical activity, typically walking and cycling, as the primary means of getting from one place to another. Here are some examples of active travel:

Walking: Walking is one of the most common forms of active travel. It includes walking for various purposes, such as commuting to work, going to school, running errands, or simply taking a leisurely stroll.

Cycling: Cycling involves riding bicycles for transportation. People use bicycles for commuting, recreational rides, and even for errands. Bicycle-sharing programs have made cycling more accessible in many urban areas.

Jogging and Running: While primarily seen as a form of exercise, jogging and running can also be modes of active travel, particularly for shorter trips or when individuals choose to run instead of walk for transportation.

Skating: Inline skating, rollerblading, and skateboarding are alternative forms of active travel for those who are comfortable with these activities. They are often used for shorter trips within neighbourhoods or on designated paths.

Scooter Riding: Electric scooters and kick scooters have gained popularity as a mode of active travel in many urban areas. Users can rent scooters to travel short distances.

Public Transportation Combined with Walking/Cycling: Active travel doesn't necessarily mean exclusively walking or cycling. Many people use public transportation (buses, trains, subways) and combine it with walking or cycling for the first and last legs of their journeys.

Benefits of Active Travel

Opting to walk or cycle around your area instead of using public transport can offer many benefits , including the following:

Active Travel in

Reduced congestion, even in high-traffic areas

Reduced air pollution

Higher-quality public areas, which are made for walking and cycling

Better physical, mental and social health in all towns

Reduced carbon emissions which can help reach carbon-zero goals nationally

Increased economic growth in all regions

Better communities with reduced inequality, as active travel is wheelchair user-friendly and suitable for everyone.

People can benefit greatly from getting active by walking and cycling more frequently. By reducing our reliance on the car and public transport for journeys, we can also contribute to a safer environment.

Our company contributes to Active Travel by creating bike paths and safe walking routes in all regions in Dundee City, making it easier for people to opt for these methods of transport for all their journeys.

The cycling or walking infrastructure we create will support active travel in these areas for many years, benefiting local adults and children and the environment as a whole.

Surfacing for Active Travel Dundee City

We can offer various surfacing on any active travel scheme in Dundee City to make cycling and walking easier.

Our infrastructure installation supports active travel methods like cycling, and we can provide various surfacing solutions to suit all needs. These are some of the surfacing solutions we use for active travel:

Wetpour Dundee City

Wetpour is a great option for cycling and walking as it is a common safety surface. Wet pour can be used on all kinds of infrastructure to create a durable path that can support walking and bike rides for people of all ages.

Mulch Dundee City

Rubber mulch is a biodegradable infrastructure that is commonly found in parks, children's play areas, and similar spaces. This is ideal for walking spaces and can improve the environment using natural resources.

Rhino Pave Dundee City

Rhino Pave surfacing is used for walking and cycling journeys, this is another common safety surface commonly found in infrastructure like schools or playgrounds. This is made using rubber granules for additional bounce and durability.

Resin Bound Gravel Dundee City

Resin bound gravel is a decorative stone surfacing which is commonly installed on pathways and cycle routes.

Resin bound gravel is made using resin particles, this surfacing is versatile and supports walking and cycling.

Artificial Grass Dundee City

Commonly found in sports facilities, artificial grass creates a natural appearance without the demand for resources. This can be installed in multiple locations for cycle paths and walking routes.

High Durability Paint Dundee City

We use high-quality paint to mark these zones to indicate where a cycling or walking path is.

We can offer a range of colours to improve the appearance of local areas and ensure that these areas are signposted clearly.

Thermoplastic Markings Dundee City

Thermoplastic markings can also be used to indicate a cycling or walking route, as well as to make fun games for children.

Introducing a smart mobility hub and active travel routes across Dundee to shift travel behavior

In line with their transport strategy, the Dundee City Council (DCC) wanted to improve access to their city centre and create sustainable modes of transport. DCC engaged our team to design a network of active travel corridors from northeast and northwest of the city, converging on a central transport hub.

The hub will be created by redeveloping a multi-storey car park into a multi-modal, sustainable transport hub. A planned 350 electrical vehicle charging points will be incorporated along with electric vehicle car club spaces and e-bike hire. A significant solar array and battery storage system will power the hub without putting additional strain on the grid. The hub will also create enhanced walking and cycling links to the city centre, providing residents with access to sustainable transport options that improve connectivity and make the city centre greener, safer, and a more attractive place to live.

To support the scheme, DCC and our team jointly developed a bid that successfully secured over £14 million in the second round of the Levelling Up Fund. Our innovative impact assessment helped make the economic case for the project while complying with best practice guidance.
