Beck is stage name of American singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Beck Hansen, known for his genre blurring, experimental style, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

With the creative juices of his arranger/conductor father David Campbell and mother Bibbe Hansen, who was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory and pertinent to the rise of the Fluxus art movement, Beck dropped out of school in 10th grade to busk on the streets and attend poetry slams. After adopting a folk and blues style on the home recording “The Banjo Story”, Beck worked alongside Karl Stephenson to create a collection of songs with folk sensibilities combined with hip-hop beats. The musician’s debut release came with the single “MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack” followed by the 17-track cassette “Golden Feelings” in 1993.

Beck’s move into the musical consciousness however didn’t arrive until the label Bong Load released the 12” single of the timeless hit “Loser”. The singer-songwriter subsequently signed with Geffen Records that meant he could released through independent labels, through which he released the 10” “A Western Harvest Field” in 1994. Beck’s debut full-length “Mellow Gold” arrived in March 1994, and shot to success on the back of the single “Loser”. Combining the infectious groove of blues guitar with the hip hop rhythm reminiscent of the Beastie Boys, the single and album became a smash.

In fear of becoming a novelty act, Beck quickly released a pair of LPs “Stereopathetic Soul Manure” and “One Foot In the Grave” in 1994. The minimalist nature of the latter showcased the singer-songwriter’s musical depth, and proved Beck wasn’t another one trick pony. After an extensive period of touring in 1994 and into 1995 including shows on the Lollapalooza tour, Beck enlisted the help of the Beastie Boys’ production team the Dust Brothers to work on his sophomore. “Odelay” appeared in mid-1996 to overwhelming commercial and critical success, earning a Grammy nomination in 1997. The album spawned the singles “Where It’s At”, “Devils Haircut”, and “The New Pollution”, and generated a huge amount of exposure and publicity.

Leaving the cut and paste process of the Dust Brothers’ production style behind, 1998’s “Mutations” was noted for its live, no-doctoring approach. The album once again earned positive reviews and resulted in Beck winning the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance in 1999. Taking influence from the hip hop and R&B act R. Kelly, the singer-songwriter worked alongside bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning, to produce his seventh studio album “Midnight Vultures”. The album, released in 1999, aimed to be an upbeat and energetic record that would be enjoyable and fun to play on tour.

The acoustic album “Sea Change” arrived in 2002 as a result of the break-up of Beck's nine-year relationship, followed by the full-length “Guero” in 2005. “Guero” spawned the hits “E-Pro” and “Hell Yes” and led to the remix of the entire album entitled “Guerolito”. Produced by Danger Mouse, Beck released “Modern Guilt” in 2008, which debuted at No. eight on the Billboard 200 and earned favourable reviews. Beck subsequently focused on production and worked alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg, Thurston Moore, and Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. New material arrived in 2012 with the collection of sheet music “Song Reader” followed in 2014 by the album “Morning Phase”, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned Beck three Grammys in 2015 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Best Rock Album, and Album of the Year.

Live reviews

Just saw his first headlining show in MSG in NYC. Tickets were a mess bc they kept lowering the prices with secret sales, angering fans who bought the $$$ ones quickly. Cheap seats for ex, went from 49 to 30 to 17 (Only I found the 2 day $17 deal on TM apparently). They wanted to fill the stadium to honor Becks 1st headlining tour to a large arena like Madison Square Garden I guess, bc sales were slow. Only pissed fans off.

I was like 6 when Beck came out, but I guess everyone else was MY AGE (30), bc lot of old farts in the crowd, many of whom sat the whole show, either writhing occasionally or stoic as if watching the ballet. I was up out of my seat dancing like silly string and singing, esp at the end of the set list, which was 80% filler. About 6 famous or fantastically upbeat songs were omitted.... Gamma Ray, Hell Yes, Nausea, Time Bomb, Tropicalia, etc. And he spoke more often than any artist I've ever seen (I've seen at least 100). Also sound quality was low during the first part of the 2 hr show. The encore was fake bc I was already told the show ends at 11, which it did after the encore. And oddly enough, a song that was JUST DONE was REPEATED for the encore, rather than choosing from his extensive catalog.

The highlight of the show was Beck saying that his grandfather emigrated from whatever country to the U.S.... ILLEGALLY, and the crowd roared in support!--me included! That was a big FUCK YOU TRUMP moment, and I was happy to be among that.

Seeing Beck live is by far a must for everyone. Whether you are a diehard fan of this güero or just familiar with "Loser" and other hits, you will surely be entertained by the creativity that Beck often puts into his shows.

While some of my favorite memories are from the last minute, "secret" warm up shows that Beck often performs at small LA clubs like The Echo, it is the tour shows where his production skills match his musical talent. From the large king bed that descended upon LA's Greek Theatre stage during the classic slow jam "Debra" to being accompanied by a very unique male dancer/cowbell instrumentalist at the OC Fairgrounds, a Beck show has it all.

Probably the most memorable show was at The Wiltern where the entire show was re-enacted in real time...on stage...by a full band of marionette puppets.

And as many fans of Beck know, the singer has two sides - mellow ("Sea Change") Beck...and funky whiteboy ("Midnight Vultures") Beck. If you are lucky, you'll get a bit of both when you see him live. In both cases, not only will you get great music but you'll definitely get introduced to Beck and his bandmates' often off-beat and spontaneously creative humor. (He loves to talk about his Hyundai Excel).

A Beck show is not to be missed! Bottles and cans, just clap your hands!

The Kansas City show was amazing, a perfect concert. I've been going to concerts since I was 15 (45 years) and this ranks in my top 2 all time. The band was a perfect fit, the stage was amazing, the visuals added did not detract from music (I was at another show last month in Boston where the visual totally distracted from the music). I have not seen Beck before despite highly ranking him, he was a bucket list artist. I was a little surprised by his comfort on stage, goofy but legitimate cool, relaxed in charge but allowed the band to do their thing. You realize the expansive genre's he crosses and it's amazing. At my age, it's a challenge for a band to get me off my feet but I was dancing entire concert. It was the happiest concert I've been to in quite some time. Strangely maybe because he crosses so many genres he remains vastly underappreciated. idiots like Kanye West don't seem to see the genius. He traces his lineage during the show, "I wanna take you higher" (Sly Stone), covered Rasberry Beret (Prince) first few bars of Strawberry Field (Beatles) that's Beck. Dude improved 1 of his songs to guitar of More than a Feeling then followed with Hank Williams cover and into I'm So Free- cmon who else can do that credibly? I want to go again tonight that's how good it was.

As darkness descended on Queens’ historic Forest Hills stadium Beck greeted a crowd still buzzing over the sweat-soaked performance art from Matt Shultz of Cage the Elephant. But with cool self-assurance Beck and his six-piece backing band launched into “Loser” and the audience focus was completely reset. Hard to believe this genre-shifting rock elf from LA is 49 years old, because he still looks and moves like a twenty-something. His playlist leaned heavily on the albums “Colors”, “Guero”, and “Odelay”. He worked from a large physical set up, including a two-tiered stage with rear video panel. Pyrotechnics were subordinate to the music, except for large white and silver ballon balls that were released into the audience. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing towards the stage and the balloons kept bumping into the musicians, creating a minor distraction from an otherwise satisfying set from this immensely talented musician.

For the last 20 years, I've always been both aware of Beck and impressed with the variety of his work, but wouldn't consider myself a big fan. Of course I can sing along with songs like Loser and Where It's At, but I'd never seen him before in concert. I figure Beck will go down as one of the true great artists of my generation so I figured it would be worthwhile to check him out in concert. I really am enjoying his new album and in particular the single Blue Moon so I decided to attend his show in Raleigh. It was a fantastic show, full of energy on a hot and sweaty summer night in an outdoor amphitheater. Beck paraded out a tour de force through his 20 year career and kept the crowd singing, dancing, and sweating all night.

I was truly surprised by how much I enjoyed this show, and his excellent backing band. I'll definitely see Beck again, and won't wait another 20 years to do it.

Beck was great. Fun, engaging, humorous, and, of course, more talented than just about anyone out there. I will always see him as much as I can.

Red Rocks, on the other hand, used to be the greatest venue in the world, but all the Colorado potheads are ruining it fast. We took four kids and they were miserable. The smoke was nonstop. The Red Rocks staff do not enforce their own rules. They completely ignore what’s going on in the crowd. And the sound was so loud that even with earplugs it was painful. From what I hear that’s been true of more and more shows at Red Rocks this year, so I’m not sure if that’s a venue thing or an artist thing. Either way, it’s just not necessary to be that loud.

This review in no way reflects poorly on Beck. This was the third tome I’ve seen him and he’s always fantastic. But Colorado needs to take a f-Ing break with all the smoking.

Secund time we've seen Beck and he was awesome and entertaining yet again-maybe even surpassing himself. Aligned with incredible musicians and this time a backing chorus with 2 women and a dude who also played various instruments (guitar, shoulder strap keyboard, mandolin/tambourine/etc., ) and danced in an elevated stage behind the front band-it had a throwback quality and was very entertaining. And as usual Beck excels art his solo breakout/improv/cover session which makes every performance unique regardless of playlist repetition. Beck is one of the hardest working acts out there (as is the Foo Fighters, whom we saw a week before!)

Absolutely perfect! Enjoyed every second of it from start to finish! Wouldn't hesitate to see the exact same show again!! Only two minor complaints:

1: I wish the concert had been longer, but a 100 minutes is pretty solid (I'm just super greedy)

2: I wish he had played more morning phase stuff (Waking Light and Blue Moon, would both had been welcome additions!) I also really wish he would have played Heavens Ladder (but that might be too much to ask if you're catering to less hardcore fans)

All in all I loved it and hope he'll do a full tour soon! (Morning Phade tour!? Pleeeease!!!)

Beck was a ton of fun! It is worth mentioning that he plays a lot of the new songs so if you hate the new album, this might not be the tour for you. That being said, if you want a rollicking good time, you gotta see Beck. He is so comfortable on stage he could almost be accused of being too loose, but it really does feel like hanging out with him. He worked in 3 songs from Midnite Vultures so there are plenty of treats for diehard fans but he will still play the hits. And the acoustic interlude featuring songs from Morning Phase and Sea Change will of course be my favorite part.

Amazing!! It's got to be Red Rocks that make artists want to try things at concerts. Getting the audience involved in making a song on the spot is something I've seen several artist do at Red Rocks now. Anyways, the band was spot on. He played a ton of classics, starting the show off with 'Devils Haircu'. A couple acoustic hits and just two new songs 'Dreams' and 'Wow'. Have the second half of the show with Preservation Hall Jazz Band added. A great show, I would give it an 8/10

Jeff Beck announces mammoth list of US tour dates, including a string of shows with Ann Wilson and ZZ Top

The shows follow the release of Beck’s collaborative album with Johnny Depp, 18, and kick off in Texas on September 23

Jeff Beck 2022 US Tour dates

British guitar legend Jeff Beck has announced a 27-date US tour, beginning September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater, in Del Valle, Texas.

The first six shows will see Beck share a bill with ZZ Top and, for selected dates, former Heart vocalist Ann Wilson , on a brief jaunt across Texas, Tennessee and Alabama.

Beck will then undertake a solo run beginning October 1 in Atlanta, GA at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, through to November 12 at the Grand Theatre, Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada.

Reportedly, the bulk of the tour’s setlist is going to focus on Beck’s recent album, 18 (a collaborative project with Johnny Depp), which has given the guitar legend his first top 10 album entry on the Billboard chart.

However, we’re told the guitarist is also promising to pay tribute to friends and influences, alongside some older material, with his interpretations of Mahavishnu Orchestra’s You Know You Know and The Beatles’ A Day in the Life , plus Brush with the Blues all set to make appearances.

Speaking of appearances, we wonder if Depp will be showing up for any of the dates.   Depp previously joined Beck onstage for a number of shows, including a gig in the UK city of Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Beck’s revealed another star collaboration – a guest spot on Ozzy Osbourne track Patient Number 9 , back in June.

Having cultivated one of the most influential careers in rock history, Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world, and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues and jazz.

Over the course of his distinguished 50-plus-year music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards , been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time," and been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice — once as a member of THE YARDBIRDS and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl.

Beck famously replaced Eric Clapton as THE YARDBIRDS ' lead guitarist in 1965 and later went on to form THE JEFF BECK GROUP , which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. Their two albums — "Truth" (1968) and "Beck-Ola" (1969) — would become musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come.

The constantly evolving Beck 's next move — a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice , which released "Beck, Bogert And Appice" (1973),once again shattered people's preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like.

1985's "Flash" kept Beck in the spotlight as he earned the "Best Rock Instrumental" Grammy for the song "Escape" . A second Grammy came with Jeff Beck 's "Guitar Shop" with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas , and a third for "Dirty Mind" from the "You Had It Coming" album in 2001. 2009 saw the release of the platinum-selling "Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott's" , which earned a Grammy for "A Day In The Life" .

Beck 's astonishing 2010 solo album, "Emotion & Commotion" , brought about two additional Grammy Awards ; Beck was nominated in five categories before bringing home three: "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" for "Hammerhead" and "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for "Nessun Dorma" , both from "Emotion & Commotion" , and "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals" for "Imagine" , his collaboration with Herbie Hancock .

His "Rock 'N' Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul)" album was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album". In 2016 he released "Loud Hailer" and in 2017 "Jeff Beck: Live At The Hollywood Bowl" was released, both to widespread critical acclaim.

Beck-Reschedules-UK-Dates-Summer-2022

Beck has rescheduled his forthcoming UK tour to summer 2022 and has added several new dates.

The influential American singer-songwriter was set to head out on a UK and European tour in support of his Hyperspace album this summer, but he was forced to postpone the dates due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The dates for the UK leg of the tour have now been rescheduled to 2022, kicking off with a new date at Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange on June 14. He has also added an extra London date to close the tour on June 18 at the O2 Forum Kentish Town.

Lo-Fi Musicians: Tape Heroes Of The 80s And 90s

Tickets for the newly added dates go on general sale at 9AM on Friday (June 25) and can be purchased on GigsAndTours, Ticketmaster and Beck’s official website . You can see the full list of rescheduled dates below.

Beck plays the following UK dates in summer 2022:

June 14 – Corn Exchange, Edinburgh June15 – O2 Victoria Warehouse, Manchester June 16 – O2 Academy Brixton, London June 18 – O2 Forum Kentish Town, London

Beck’s latest album, Hyperspace , was released in 2019 to considerable acclaim. Typical of these was a glowing four-star review in the NME, in which their writer Thomas Smith declared: “After a career spanning 30-years, Beck is still shape-shifting and proves, once again, that no genre isn’t malleable for him.

“There are a few early misfires here, but they are rescued by a stunning second half on which Beck’s trademark sound is stripped back and drenched in a glistening synth-filled air that takes him into a daring new era.”

Elsewhere, in a new interview, Beck has revealed that Oasis were one of the first UK acts to embrace him early on in his career, at a time when he was struggling to get a gig in England.

“There was no love there at all for me”, Beck told Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson. “Then I got this call from my A&R, from Mark Kates, he said, “I was just in London and I was hanging out with the Gallagher brothers and I gave them a copy of Odelay and they’re obsessed with it. And they want to do a remix.” I said, “Holy s_t.” (What’s The Story) Morning Glory had just come out. And it was huge. It was blowing up. So they wanted to go into the studio and do a remix of “Devil’s Haircut.” And I thought, “I didn’t even know they did remixes.”

JEFF BECK Announces Fall 2022 U.S. Tour

Article contributed by mad ink pr | published on monday, august 15, 2022.

beck tour 2022

Announced today, JEFF BECK will tour the U.S. this fall in support of the newly released, highly anticipated musical collaboration with Johnny Depp, 18. The tour will kick off on September 23 in Del Valle, TX where Beck will share the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. BECK will then continue on for his headline dates in Atlanta on October 1 continuing up the east coast hitting DC, Boston and the New York area before heading west with several mid-west stops before heading to the west coast. Currently, the tour will wind up in Reno, NV on November 12th. Pre-sale tickets will be available on tomorrow, Tuesday August 16 at 10am local time (password: beck18) with public on sale Friday, August 19.  VIP packages also available here . Full itinerary is below with all dates subject to change and more dates to be announced.   The tour will focus on the new album as well as explore Beck’s legendary career through instrumentals like “You Know You Know,” “A Day in the Life” and “Brush with the Blues.” The tour will include BECK’s current band: bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson.   BECK and DEPP’s 13-track album, 18, debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart.  The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25 in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold-out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France - including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.   Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”   Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

Jeff Beck Announces Massive U.S. Tour, Ann Wilson and ZZ Top to Support

by Jacob Uitti August 19, 2022, 8:40 am

Legendary blues-rock guitarist Jeff Beck has announced an upcoming U.S. tour, which will include support from other big names like Ann Wilson (of Heart) and ZZ Top.

Videos by American Songwriter

The string of 27 dates, which kicks off on September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Del Valle, Texas, follows the release of Beck’s new album, 18 , with actor-musician Johnny Depp.

The Depp-Beck album gave Beck his first top-10 record on the Billboard chart.

The first six shows of Beck’s tour will include support from ZZ Top and upcoming shows in Texas, Tennessee and Alabama will include Wilson.

Reportedly, on tour, Beck will largely focus on the songs from 18 , though he will surely dip into older material, as well. And speculation abounds whether or not Depp will join his musical collaborator on any of the dates. He has recently joined Beck on stage for several shows, including one in the U.K. city of Sheffield.

Beck is also a collaborator on the new Ozzy Osbourne album, Patient Number 9 . Check out the full list of Beck’s tour dates below.

Wonderfront music festival has returned to kick off its next wave

Violinist and singer Sudan Archives performs Friday at the Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival in downtown San Diego.

A capacity crowd of 15,000 was expected Friday at the festival, which runs through Sunday alongside San Diego Bay

Reinvention is the mother of necessity for San Diego’s Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival, which kicked off its third edition since 2019 Friday afternoon at Embarcadero Marina Park North under cloudy, May gray skies and a pleasant breeze.

The three-day festival debuted five years ago, then went dark the next two years because of the pandemic. Wonderfront returned in 2022 but was on hiatus last year to facilitate a shift from its original November time slot to Mother’s Day weekend.

Wonderfront returning to San Diego this week as landscape for music festivals grows increasingly challenging

A record number of festivals have recently been canceled, postponed or gone out of business, while Coachella’s attendance has gone down for the second consecutive year. What does it take to buck the trend? Will Wonderfront’s lineup do the trick with Kaytranada, Beck, Weezer and The Roots?

May 5, 2024

No matter the time of year, the event’s return was welcomed by Brent Goode, a data analyst who attended both previous iterations of Wonderfront, and Tony Le Calvez, a graduate student at Point Loma Nazarene University, who on Friday afternoon were among the first attendees at the festival, where music began at 12:15 p.m.

“They have good music and I live downtown, so I could walk over,” said Goode, 48.

“It’s going great and there’s a wonderful energy,” said Le Calvez, 27. “It’s a much younger audience than in 2022, and everything is streamlined and well organized so far.”

That streamlining is by design.

Where the 2022 Wonderfront featured an array of musical styles and headliners each day — including Gwen Stefani, Zac Brown Band and Kings of Leon — this year’s edition is geared to draw more specific and distinct audiences each day.

Friday, which was expected to draw a capacity audience of 15,000, was geared to fans of hip-hop and electronic dance music with headlining sets by Kaytranada, JID and T-Pain.

Saturday has more of a rock and pop emphasis with scheduled performances by Weezer, Dominic Fike, Carly Rae Jepsen and more. Sunday’s lineup is the most varied with Beck, The Roots Marcus King, Steel Pulse, Natasha Bedingfield and Fruit Bats in the roster.

A small crowd gathers near a stage on Friday at the Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival in downtown San Diego.

All told, more than 80 bands and solo artists have been booked for this year’s edition of Wonderfront, which was created with the twin goals of celebrating music and boosting local hotel and restaurant revenues. Accordingly, the San Diego Tourism Marketing District has contributed $250,000 in underwriting to the festival while the Port of San Diego waived its park permit fees.

Wonderfront’s return was perfectly timed for Kate Hernandez and Myles Darling, who drove down from Los Angeles to attend the festival’s opening day.

“Kate bought the tickets for my birthday,” said Darling, 31, an elevator constructor. “I like the ocean view and the weather is nice.”

“We’re here to see Kaytranada and T-Pain,” said Hernandez, 27, a nursing student.

“T-Pain,” Darling added with a smile about the singer and rapper, whose breakthrough hit, “I’m Sprung,” came out in 2005, “is a nostalgia artist for us.”

Anastasia Stognei in Tbilisi and Ben Hall in London

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

There are few places in Tbilisi from where you cannot see the steel and glass palace perched on Mount Mtatsminda belonging to Bidzina Ivanishvili. But unlike his imposing property, the richest and most powerful man in Georgia has stayed out of the public eye.

Since serving as prime minister from 2012-13, the oligarch — whose $5bn fortune is equivalent to one-third of his country’s GDP — has largely wielded power from behind the scenes.

Last week, however, he descended from his mountain to deliver a conspiratorial, anti-western speech in which he depicted Georgia as a victim of a “global party of war” and its alleged agents among civil rights groups.

His rare address, at a pro-government rally, was a show of support for a highly contentious foreign agents law being pushed through parliament by his Georgian Dream party. The law would require NGOs and media outlets with foreign funding to register with the justice ministry or face fines.

Critics say it has been inspired by Russia’s crackdown on civil society and will be used to help Georgian Dream win parliament elections due in October.

The bill has sparked the country’s biggest demonstrations in decades, with many Georgians fearing its passage will jeopardise — and indeed may be designed to stymie — their hopes of joining the EU.

The Georgian government’s rapprochement with Moscow has been under way for three years, despite Russia’s war against Ukraine. But analysts and government critics say that the foreign agents law and Ivanishvili’s speech, in which he echoed Kremlin lines, mark a turning point and that the former Soviet republic is now heading back into Russia’s orbit.

Locator map of Georgia

Ever since independence, Georgian governments have sought to integrate with the west, said Natalie Sabanadze, a former Georgian ambassador to the EU, now with the Chatham House think-tank. But recent events, she said, had been a “big, dramatic shift”.

Ivanishvili spent his formative years in Russia where he built his fortune like other oligarchs who acquired Soviet-era state assets through privatisations. While studying at a Moscow university in the 1980s, he teamed up with a Russian-Israeli national, Vitaly Malkin, and began trading in computers and telephones from Hong Kong. They expanded into banking and metals.

The Georgian oligarch is part of semibankirshina or “seven bankers” — a group of influential Russian financiers and businessmen that included Boris Berezovsky, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Mikhail Fridman — who salvaged Boris Yeltsin’s campaign for re-election as Russian president in 1996.

In 2003 Ivanishvili returned from Russia to his native Georgian village of Chorvila. He stayed out of politics until 2011 when he founded Georgian Dream, a coalition of all the forces opposing then president Mikheil Saakashvili. Within a year, the party won parliamentary elections, marking the first peaceful transition of power in modern Georgia, and the billionaire became prime minister.

During his time in office, Saakashvili passed successful, albeit painful economic reforms. His attempts to steer Georgia out of Russia’s orbit and into the EU and Nato prompted a Russian invasion and occupation of two border regions in 2008. Saakashvili became increasingly authoritarian, cracking down on dissent to hold on to power.

“People were so tired that they would vote for anyone who opposed Saakashvili”, said Victor Kipiani, a senior partner at Tbilisi-based law firm MKD that represented Ivanishvili for five years until the oligarch halted their co-operation in 2023, after Kipiani criticised the ruling party’s first attempt to adopt the foreign agents law.

The steel and glass palace on Mount Mtatsminda belonging to Bidzina Ivanishvili

Ivanishvili tried to stabilise relations with Moscow, with the blessing of the west, while at the same time prioritising Georgia’s integration into the EU and Nato, says Chatham House’s Sabanadze. But the balancing act became impossible after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

One theory is that, as is the case with many Russian oligarchs, his business interests are under threat unless he toes the Kremlin line. Another possible explanation is that he is reacting to an EU request for Georgia to drastically curb the sway of its oligarchs before starting accession talks.

Ivanishvili did not respond to requests for comment.

As honorary chair of Georgian Dream, a role created specially for him, he holds no formal government or party role. But he crucially has the right to nominate the party’s candidates for prime minister.

“This arrangement gives Ivanishvili almost absolute power without any formal accountability,” said Eka Gigauri, head of Transparency International Georgia.

Ivanishvili maintains his grip on power by appointing close associates to key positions. His bodyguard is now the minister of interior, former chief executives of his companies have been appointed at the helm of the intelligence service and the ministry of infrastructure and the former minister of education was once a maths tutor for his children, said Gigauri. “The list goes on and on.”

Another explanation for his Russia pivot is that, with elections looming, Ivanishvili is adopting tactics used by Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, polarising the political debate, painting domestic opponents as foreign lackeys and fighting culture war issues to appeal to socially conservative Georgians, especially those in rural areas.

Demonstrators in Tbilisi protest against the foreign agents bill last week

“People support EU integration because they believe that life is better there,” said Kornely Kakachia, the director of the Georgian Institute of Politics. “But when it comes to values, many do not believe in them,” he said, giving the example of LGBT+ rights.

In his speech Ivanishvili reiterated that it was still Georgia’s objective to join the EU. But Brussels has warned that passing the NGO law would threaten Georgia’s membership prospects.

As many as 89 per cent of Georgians support EU accession, according to the Washington-based International Republican Institute. Tens of thousands have taken to the streets of Tbilisi since early April and clashed with police, some draped in EU flags, to protest against the law and their country sliding back into Russia’s sphere of influence.

So Ivanishvili is taking a “possibly suicidal” risk, said Sabanadze. Some members of the European parliament have called for sanctions against the oligarch.

Georgian Dream has paid lip service to EU integration to buy domestic and international legitimacy while “incrementally eroding democracy in the country”, said Anastasia Mgaloblishvili of the German Marshall Fund think-tank. Now, she said, “the pro-EU veil has finally come off”.

When Jeff Beck Opened His Final Tour, With Johnny Depp

beck tour 2022

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp opened their collaborative tour with a show at The Anthem in Washington, DC on Oct. 4, 2022. The evening began with a solo set from Beck and his backing band (bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson). Opening with “Freeway Jam” he continued with his signature versions of “You Know You Know,” “Big Block,” and “Brush with the Blues” and from his new album with Depp, 18 , “Caroline No”. At the midway point of the set, Depp stepped out from the wings to join Beck on songs from the new album including “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” and “Isolation” before ending the night with their take on the Killing Joke song, “The Death and Resurrection Show.”

The tour, originally announced on Aug. 15, began on Sept. 23 in Texas where Beck (alone) shared the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. Beck joined ZZ Top on stage each night for their encores. Here they are performing “La Grange” on Sept. 25.

Beck and Depp headed up the east coast before continuing with several mid-west stops (including one date in Canada) before heading to the west coast.

Watch Beck (with a noticeable smile on his face) and his band open their Oct. 4 show with “Freeway Jam”

Watch Beck and Depp perform a variety of songs, mid-set

From the original Aug. 15 tour announcement: Beck found a kindred spirit in Depp when the two met in 2016.

“We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said at the time. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.” The pair had previously wrapped a European tour.

One of the Oct. 4 opening night encores was a cover of “Little Wing”

The tour spanned 21 dates, ending on Nov. 12. Beck, born on June 24, 1944, was universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ year career, he earned eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with a concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

Revisiting Jeff Beck’s Final Concert

On Nov. 12, 2022 Jeff Beck took the stage in Reno, Nev. for what would turn out to be the final concert of his illustrious career.

The performance was the guitar great’s last tour date alongside actor-turned-rocker Johnny Depp . The two men became friends in 2016, later becoming collaborators. “When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity,” Beck explained , calling the Hollywood star a "kindred spirit."

In 2020, the duo released their first song together, a cover of John Lennon ’s “Isolation.” Depp later admitted that Beck helped keep him “alive and sane and happy” through his chaotic defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

The 2022 tour was in support of 18 , Beck and Depp’s collaborative album made up largely of covers. Many of those tunes made it into the set list during that final performance, including the Beach Boys ’ “Caroline, No” and the Velvet Underground ’s “Venus in Furs.”

Plenty of Beck originals were also featured in the set. The night’s opening song was “Freeway Jam,” the guitarist’s famous instrumental from 1975. “Loose Cannon,” “Big Block,” “Star Cycle” and “You Never Know” were the other Beck tunes performed that night.

The lone Depp original in the set list was “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr,” a tune the actor slyly coaxed Beck to record for their album.

Watch Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp Perform 'This Is a Song for Miss Heddy Lamarr'

“I sent a very cheeky text to Jeff and said, 'Hey, don’t think that I’m asking you to play on this because I’m really not,'” Depp recalled to Hollywood Authentic . “'Don’t feel any pressure at all. I’m just sending you this song that I wrote. Of course, if you wanted to play on it, that’s fine. But I’m not saying you should , and I’m not asking you to, because I wouldn’t do that to our friendship.'”

Beck’s response? “Send me the stems, you fucker.”

By all accounts, the Reno performance was a triumphant end to the duo’s tour. More than 2,500 people turned out to watch the gig, including Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale , who raved about the show.

The final tune of the night was a rendition of Killing Joke’s “Death and Resurrection Show.” Tragically, song's title that would carry much more weight just two months later, as Beck died at the age of 78.

Russians are so desperate to see Western pop stars, they are paying to go on 'concert vacations' abroad

  • A Russian tour operator is offering concert-themed package vacations.
  • Russian fans can pay to see pop stars like Ed Sheeran and James Blunt in Europe.
  • The company has sold 150 concert vacations since last year, according to The Telegraph.

Insider Today

Western pop stars have largely boycotted Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine.

Russian music fans, however, appear to be so desperate to see their favorite artists that they are paying thousands to go on "concert vacations" abroad.

Tour operator Russian Express has seen large demand for its concert-themed vacation packages, according to The Telegraph. The packages include the chance to see Ed Sheeran in Zagreb , Croatia, and James Blunt in Dubai.

A spokesperson for the operator told The Telegraph that it had sold 150 concert vacations since it launched its packages in the fall of last year. The spokesperson said these kinds of vacations are "consistently popular" and that it selects artists that appear to both "young people and the older generations."

"Imagine Dragons and Snoop Dog are the choice of young people. Scorpions and Rammstein are the choice of older people," the spokesperson told The Telegraph.

One of the packages — a five-day trip to see Ed Sheeran perform in Belgrade, Serbia, in August — costs around $1,123.

Sheeran, who last performed in Moscow in 2019, has publicly expressed his support for Ukraine and performed at the Concert for Ukraine fundraiser in 2022.

"Western superstars don't perform in Moscow anymore," Jonny Tickle, a British man living in Moscow, wrote on X. "As a result, some companies have set up travel packages including flights, accommodation, and concert tickets for Russians who want to watch their favourite singers like Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa and Adele.'"

Tickle also posted ads by Moscow-based radio station Europa Plus, which is running a competition called " Live Tour 2024 ." Prizes include packages to see Adele in Munich, Coldplay in Budapest, and Taylor Swift in Vienna.

In 2021, Coldplay's bassist Guy Berryman wrote on X that the band would "for sure" want to perform in Russia after a fan asked if there was anywhere he would like to play that he hadn't visited.

However, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Coldplay didn't include Russia dates on its tour.

In 2022, Coldplay invited Svyatoslav Vakarchuk , lead singer of the Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy, onstage at their show in Brussels.

"We are at war. I want you to know we are fighting not only for Ukraine, we are fighting for world peace, freedom, and democracy," Vakarchuk said in a video of the concert posted to X.

Russian Express and Europa Plus did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Johnny Depp rocks out at concert for late Jeff Beck

J ohnny Depp (59) pays tribute to his late friend Jeff Beck (1944-2023). The actor performed at a tribute concert for the musician at London's Royal Albert Hall on Monday. The musician, named the fifth best guitarist of all time by 'Rolling Stone', had died of bacterial meningitis on January 10.

Top-class line-up at tribute concert for Jeff Beck

Johnny Depp sang and played guitar alongside great companions and colleagues of Beck. On stage, for example, was Eric Clapton (78), who organized the concert with Beck's widow Sandra. Among the guests were Rod Stewart (78), Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood (75), soul singer Joss Stone (36) and Billy Gibbons (73) of ZZ Top.

In memory of Jeff Beck, Johnny Depp wore a white denim jacket with his likeness on the back. The actor and the musician were closely connected in recent years. In the summer of 2022 they released their joint album '18' and performed together.

Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck: Close friendship through joint album and tour

"The two had a very close friendship, they were extremely close, and became even closer friends last summer when they were on tour together," a source told 'People' magazine after Beck's death.

Depp had visited his buddy on his deathbed shortly before his passing. The guitarist's health had deteriorated rapidly. Depp is said to have been "devastated".

"It's an extraordinary honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the greats and someone I can now call my brother," Depp let slip as part of their collaboration.

The rock legend praised the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star in the highest terms at the time. "I haven't had a creative partner like him in a long time," Beck said at the time, "He was a driving force on this record. I just hope people take him seriously as a musician, because it's hard for some people to accept that Johnny Depp can sing rock 'n' roll."

This Tuesday (May 23), the second tribute concert for Jeff Beck goes on stage.

Jeff Beck, Guitarist With a Chapter in Rock History, Dies at 78

His playing with the Yardbirds and as leader of his own bands brought a sense of adventure to their groundbreaking recordings.

By Jim Farber

Jeff Beck, one of the most skilled, admired and influential guitarists in rock history, died on Tuesday in a hospital near his home at Riverhall, a rural estate in southern England. He was 78.

The cause was bacterial meningitis, Melissa Dragich, his publicist, said.

During the 1960s and ’70s, as either a member of the Yardbirds or as leader of his own bands, Mr. Beck brought a sense of adventure to his playing that helped make the recordings by those groups groundbreaking.

In 1965, when he joined the Yardbirds to replace another guitar hero, Eric Clapton, the group was already one of the defining acts in Britain’s growing electric blues movement. But his stinging licks and darting leads on songs like “Shapes of Things” and “Over Under Sideways Down” added an expansive element to the music that helped signal the emerging psychedelic rock revolution.

Three years later, when Mr. Beck formed his own band, later known as the Jeff Beck Group — along with Rod Stewart, a little-known singer at the time, and the equally obscure Ron Wood on bass — the weight of the music created an early template for heavy metal. Specifically, the band’s 1968 debut, “Truth,” provided a blueprint that another former guitar colleague from the Yardbirds, Jimmy Page, drew on to found Led Zeppelin several months later.

In 1975, when Mr. Beck began his solo career with the “Blow by Blow” album, he reconfigured the essential formula of that era’s fusion movement, tipping the balance of its influences from jazz to rock and funk, in the process creating a sound that was both startlingly new and highly successful. “Blow by Blow” became a Billboard Top 5 and, selling a million or more copies, a platinum hit.

Along the way, Mr. Beck helped either pioneer or amplify important technical innovations on his instrument. He elaborated the use of distortion and feedback effects, earlier explored by Pete Townshend; intensified the effect of bending notes on the guitar; and widened the range of expression that could be coaxed from devices attached to the guitar like the whammy bar.

Drawing on such techniques, Mr. Beck could weaponize his strings to hit like a stun gun or caress them to express what felt like a kiss. His work had humor, too, with licks that could cackle and leads that could tease.

“Even in the Yardbirds, he had a tone that was melodic, but in your face — bright, urgent and edgy,” wrote Mike Campbell, of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, for an article in Rolling Stone magazine to accompany a poll that named Mr. Beck the fifth greatest guitar player of all time. “It’s like he’s saying: ‘I’m Jeff Beck. I’m right here. You can’t ignore me.’”

“Everybody respects Jeff,” Mr. Page said in a 2018 documentary titled “Still on the Run: The Jeff Beck Story.” “He’s an extraordinary musician. He’s having a conversation with you when he’s playing.”

Despite the accolades, Mr. Beck never achieved the sales or popularity of the guitarists considered to be his peers, including Mr. Page, Mr. Clapton and one of the players he admired most, Jimi Hendrix. Only two of his albums achieved platinum status in the United States, including “Wired,” his 1976 follow-up to “Blow by Blow.”

“Part of the reason is never having attempted to get into mainstream pop, rock or heavy metal or anything like that,” he told the arts website Elsewhere in 2009. “Shutting those doors means you’ve only got a limited space to squeeze through.”

It hurt, too, that the mercurial Mr. Beck often worked without a lead singer, and that his groups seldom lasted long. His first band, with Mr. Stewart and Mr. Wood, stood on the cusp of superstardom, with an invitation to play Woodstock. But Mr. Beck turned down the offer, and the group dissolved shortly thereafter.

Another band he led that held commercial promise, Beck, Bogert & Appice (featuring the rhythm section of Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice, formerly of Vanilla Fudge) earned a gold album in 1973, but Mr. Beck scotched the project after less than two years. Not that he minded his status in the industry.

“I’ve never made the big time, mercifully,” Mr. Beck told Rolling Stone in 2018. “When you look around and see who has made it huge, it’s a really rotten place to be.”

Grammys and Gold

Even so, he earned eight gold albums over more than six decades. He also amassed seven Grammys, six in the category of best rock instrumental performance and one for best pop collaboration with vocals. He was inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame twice, as part of the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a solo star in 2009.

“Jeff Beck was on another planet,” Mr. Stewart said in a statement on Wednesday. “He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group, and we haven’t looked back since. He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man.”

Geoffrey Arnold Beck was born on June 24, 1944, in South London to Arnold and Ethel Beck. His mother was a candy maker, his father an accountant. Mr. Beck told Guitar Player Magazine in 1968 that his mother had “forced” him to play piano two hours a day when he was a boy. “That was good,” he said, “because it made me realize that I was musically sound. My other training consisted of stretching rubber bands over tobacco cans and making horrible noises.”

He became attracted to electric guitar after hearing Les Paul’s work and was later drawn to the work of Cliff Gallup, lead guitarist for Gene Vincent’s band, and the American player Lonnie Mack. He became entranced not only by the sound of the guitar but also by its mechanics.

“At the age of 13, I built two or three of my own guitars,” Mr. Beck wrote in an essay for a book about his career published in 2016 titled “Beck 01: Hot Rods and Rock & Roll.” “It was fun just to look at it and hold it. I knew where I was headed.”

He enrolled in Wimbledon College of Art but spent more time playing in bands. Dropping out of school, he began to do studio session work and in 1965 was invited to join the Yardbirds through Jimmy Page, whom Mr. Beck had befriended as a teenager and who had just turned that job down.

Though he was with the Yardbirds for only 20 months, Mr. Beck played on most of their successful songs, starting with “Heart Full of Soul,” which broke the Top 10 in Billboard and got to No. 2 in Britain. It was fired by his burning lead guitar line, which took influence from Indian music and which served as the song’s hook.

In 1966, the Yardbirds’ single “Shapes of Things,” which got to No. 11 in the United States (No. 3 in Britain), included a frantic double-time solo by Mr. Beck that became one of the band’s most celebrated showcases.

At the suggestion of his manager, Mr. Beck recorded an instrumental piece for a potential solo project in May 1966 titled “Beck’s Bolero.” It featured on rhythm guitar Mr. Page (who received writing credit on the song), the Who’s Keith Moon on drums, the future Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and the in-demand session pianist Nicky Hopkins.

A signature instrumental with a complex, unfolding structure, the song wasn’t released at the time, dashing Mr. Beck’s hope that this lineup would comprise his next band. Instead, he soldiered on with the Yardbirds, who then added Mr. Page, first on bass and later in a dueling lead guitar role with Mr. Beck. That fleeting lineup was immortalized in “Blow Up,” the Mod-era film by the director Michelangelo Antonioni, in which they performed a manic version of their song “Train Kept A-Rollin,’” recast as “Stroll On.”

Tensions which had been brewing between Mr. Beck and the rest of the Yardbirds came to a boil on an exhausting U.S. tour that fall, compelling him to quit. He later considered this period the low point of his career.

“All of a sudden, you’re nobody,” he told Rolling Stone in 2016. “Because the band were able to carry on” with Mr. Page, “it was almost like I was airbrushed out of it.”

Even so, a single was released under his own name in March 1967, “Hi-Ho Silver Lining,” which featured a rare vocal by Mr. Beck, which he abhorred. “I sound unbearably bad,” he told Music Radar in 2021.

Still, the song got to No. 15 in Britain, and its B-side provided a home for “Beck’s Bolero.”

He found more satisfaction by forming the first Jeff Beck Group, with Mr. Stewart, Mr. Wood, and Mr. Hopkins along with the drummer Mickey Waller. Columbia Records signed them and issued their debut, “Truth,” in the summer of 1968. It boasted a new, heavier version of the Yardbirds’ “Shapes of Things,” along with “Beck’s Bolero.”

“Truth” got to No. 15 in Billboard and went gold, fired by its fresh mix of booming rock and emotive soul. Its follow-up, “Beck-Ola,” which subbed the drummer Tony Newman for Mr. Waller, was released a year later and mirrored the debut’s success. But the band imploded almost immediately after.

“I don’t know what happened,” Mr. Beck told Music Radar. “It was a lack of material,” he said, plus, he surmised, Mr. Stewart “wanted to see his name up there instead of mine.”

One Band, Then Another

In the fall of 1969, Mr. Beck tried to rally by planning a new group with Mr. Bogert and Mr. Appice, but that fell apart after Mr. Beck fractured his skull in a car accident. In the meantime, the two other musicians formed the blues-rock band Cactus.

Following a long convalescence, a new version of the Jeff Beck Group emerged in 1971, with the soul singer Bobby Tench, the drummer Cozy Powell and the keyboardist Max Middleton, who encouraged Mr. Beck to explore jazz.

Their debut, “Rough and Ready,” released in October, featured more original compositions from Mr. Beck than usual, but it barely made Billboard’s Top 50. Its chaser, “Jeff Beck Group,” which tipped toward the soulful side of their sound, did better, breaking Billboard’s Top 20 and going gold.

Again, however, the changeable Mr. Beck yearned for something new, so when Cactus broke up, he reconvened with Mr. Bogert and Mr. Appice — the rhythm section he had considered earlier — to form the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice.

A notable track on their 1973 debut album, “Beck, Bogert & Appice,” was a version of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” But Mr. Beck was dissatisfied with both his band’s version of the song and the band itself, and so, during the recording of a second album, produced by Jimmy Miller, he broke up the group, although a live album, “Beck, Bogert & Appice Live in Japan,” came out afterward, in 1975 — a year that changed Mr. Beck’s career.

Daringly, Mr. Beck devoted most of the “Blow by Blow” solo album, recorded in 1974 and released in 1975, to instrumentals, inspired by the creativity of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the soaring work of the band’s fusion guitarist, John McLaughlin.

To help capture that group’s feel, Mr. Beck hired the producer George Martin, who had overseen Mahavishnu’s album “Apocalypse” the year before (and who had achieved his greatest renown with the Beatles). Mr. Beck told The New Statesman magazine in 2016 that Mr. Martin had provided “a massive pair of wings.”

“Just knowing that somebody with such sensitive ears was approving of what was going on, you were flying,” he said.

Mr. Beck’s follow-up album, “Wired,” featured two players from Mahavishnu: the drummer Narada Michael Walden and the keyboardist Jan Hammer, expanding the fusion element in the music. Mr. Beck later toured with Mr. Hammer’s band, resulting in the album “Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live,” which went gold in 1977.

Mr. Hammer was also instrumental in Mr. Beck’s 1980 album, “There & Back,” which got to No. 21 on Billboard’s chart. In 1985, Mr. Beck returned to working with vocalists for his “Flash” album, on which Mr. Stewart sang a version of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready.” (The video became an MTV hit.) Another instrumental recording, “Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop,” issued in 1989, became his final gold album.

Starting in the 1990s, Mr. Beck began to do prodigious session work, providing solos on albums by Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Waters, Kate Bush, Tina Turner and others. He showed the continued breadth of his style with his “Emotion & Commotion” album in 2010, which included the standard “Over the Rainbow” and Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma.” The latter track won a Grammy, and the album reached No. 11 in Billboard.

Over the next few decades, Mr. Beck continued to tour and to record, most recently yielding a collaboration album with the actor and guitarist Johnny Depp, titled “18,” in 2022.

Mr. Beck married Sandra Cash in 2005, and she survives him.

To his fans, and to himself, Mr. Beck was so deeply identified with his guitar — particularly the Fender Stratocaster — that he seemed inseparable from it.

“My Strat is another arm,” he told Music Radar. “I’ve welded myself to that. Or it’s welded itself to me, one or the other.”

He added: “It’s a tool of great inspiration and torture at the same time. It’s forever sitting there, challenging you to find something else in it. But it is there if you really search.”

Alex Traub contributed reporting.

An earlier version of this obituary referred incorrectly to the guitarist Lonnie Mack. He was American, not British.

An earlier version of this obituary misstated the given name of a member of the band Beck, Bogert & Appice. He was Tim Bogert, not Tom.
