Buddy Guy at Majestic Theatre Dallas

Since the 1960s, Buddy Guy has stood in for Chicago blues long before the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, and countless others rose to prominence. It is safe to say that he was a major influence on all the blues stars before him. Clapton has even proclaimed him "the best guitar player alive."

As a young musician in his early teens, Buddy Guy picked up a two-string guitar and began playing the blues just for fun. Back in the sixties, he worked manual jobs and made a living as a musician at night. He got signed to a music label but was told he could not perform in his own unique way. In that decade, he worked mostly as a session guitarist for Muddy Waters. Many British musicians, notably Eric Clapton, owe a debt of gratitude to his great guitar playing and powerful voice. This latter factor was crucial to the success of blues music and Buddy Guy in the 1990s.

Among Buddy Guy's many honors are eight Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award, the US National Medal of Arts, and two Kennedy Center Honors. Additionally, he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Among Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," he is listed at number 23.

The pioneering musician, now in the prime age of 86, has constantly been performing to ensure the blues' continued success. He will now embark on another tour named "Damn Right Farewell Tour." Joined by American blues rock guitarists Eric Gales and Ally Venable, the show will feature Buddy Guy's hits throughout his career and new songs from his latest number-one album. New favorites, including "Gunsmoke Blues" with Jason Isbell, "We Go Back" with Mavis Staples and a beautiful collaboration with James Taylor on "Follow the Money" will be featured alongside the album's core old hits.

You can catch them live on Wednesday, March 8, at the Majestic Theatre Dallas in Texas. Reserve your tickets as early as today. Click the "Get Tickets" link for a fast and safe transaction.

Buddy Guy is THE MAN!

What a fantastic show! He's closing in on 83 years young and still tearin'it up! From a soft slow burnin'blues to rip your lips right off your face Chicago style stinky blues! Buddy puts on a show like nobody else! If you've seen him before go see him again! If you've never seen him please do yourself a favor and go check him out! This man is a living legend and in my humble opinion a national treasure!

Thanks Buddy, keep bendin' them strings!

This was my Second Concert seeing Buddy Guy... if you enjoy the "Blues" this is the Artist to see. His Energy and interactions with the Audience was one of the Best, and one borne of pure Love of the the Audience and Music. He tells a few Stories, in a Lovely way, paying Homage and saluting the past Giants of the Blues Genere, even playing their Hits. Buddy Guy also has a very Playful side to him, and he will play his Guitar in all sorts of Strange ways, like using a drumstick, or a piece of Cloth, or even by rubbing the guitar Strings on dfferent parts of his body. At the end of the Concert Buddy Guy continued playing while mingling with the audience. I even managed a Selfie with Buddy Guy.

This man is an American (Blues) legend. I could leave it at that....but, he what I didn’t realize was just how entertaining and funny he is. In addition to playing he would interject stories of his youth or playing with other artists.....he came all the way through the audience off the stage, too, which was a real thrill. I got to take my teen son to this so he could see a legend before they are all gone. Buddy is 82 but you’d never know! A life long experience to remember! You’re really missing out if you miss this show. We love you, Buddy!

Ally Venable New Album & Upcoming Tour with Buddy Guy

Article contributed by devious planet | published on monday, february 6, 2023.

buddy guy tour dallas

Texas blues/rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Ally Venable is pleased to announce that she will release Real Gone! , her latest solo effort, on March 24th via Ruf Records.

At 23, Venable is a fiery presence well-known in the roots music world. Her name has grown in stature with each new album and high-energy gig. She's a ripping guitar player with style and tone for days, a commanding singer, and a songwriter with the power to make blues music that speaks to contemporary fans. The new record, produced by Grammy winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi), features guest appearances by Joe Bonamassa and living legend Buddy Guy.

Venable is that rare musician who can take her old-school influences like Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan and create music that brings their spirits to today's listeners where they live. Together with Isaac Pulido (drums) and EJ Bedford (bass), she gives audiences an entertaining show packed with musical muscle and relatable songs about living, growing, and evolving.

The first single from Real Gone! is the title track, a straight-up, body-moving rocker. American Blues Scene premiered the video. The second single, to be released on February 24th, is T "exas Louisiana," a crackling duet with the one-and-only Buddy Guy. Ally and Buddy are an absolute dream team, intertwining their guitars and voices into one without losing any identity or impact.

On the soulful ballad "Next Time I See You," Ally downshifts her vocals and shows every dynamic degree of her impressive range. Her guitar work here is equally lyrical and emotive, displaying a gift for phrasing that few players ever attain. The slow grinding jam "Blues Is My Best Friend" lays out the ups and downs of the guitar lifestyle in no uncertain terms and features some of Venable's most intense playing and singing on the entire set. Ally's deep, cliche-free authenticity is the common thread running through every song on Real Gone! She speaks her mind without hesitation or apology, turning each track into an honest statement of purpose.

In December 2022, Guitar World named Ally one of the Top 15 'Young Guns,' Making the Gibson Les Paul Cool Again. That same year, she received the Road Warrior Award from the Independent Blues Music Awards. Additionally, she performed as a featured artist on the Experience Hendrix Show in Austin, TX, appearing alongside Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Zack Wilde, Eric Johnson, and Dweezil Zappa, to name a few.

With 2019's Texas Honey and 2021's Heart of Fire, Venable found herself topping the Billboard charts. Early releases No Glass Shoes (2016) and Puppet Show (2018) created her fanbase, charted on radio, and won several East Texas Music Awards. Venable's acclaim for addition med performances on Ruf Records' European Blues Caravan tour brought her international recognition. She has toured the U.S. with Buddy Guy, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Canada with Colin James.

This year, Ally will be opening for Buddy Guy on his farewell tour, supporting Kenny Wayne Shepherd, rocking Europe again on the Blues Caravan Tour, and doing her headline shows domestically and abroad.

Live Review: Buddy Guy @ The Lyric Baltimore — 4/4/24

Live Review: Buddy Guy @ The Lyric Baltimore — 4/4/24

Legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy is 85 years old and his current, and he says last, tour is called the Damn Right Farewell Tour. He recently stopped by The Lyric Baltimore for a date on the tour.

Buddy Guy is one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time with a career that spans over 50 years. He has released over 20 solo albums and many more collaborations throughout that time.

Buddy was born in 1936 to sharecroppers in Louisiana and he later became well known for his Chicago electric blues and as a blues guitar trailblazer alongside such icons as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Buddy at No. 23 in its “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” Over the years, Buddy Guy has influenced such legendary guitarists as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr., and many, many more.

His career highlights include eight Grammy awards, 38 Blues Music awards (the most of any artist), a 2015 Grammy Lifetime Achievement award, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Billboard Music Awards’ Century Award for distinguished artistic development, the Presidential National Medal of Arts, and he is a 2005 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

On April 4, Buddy Guy brought his electric blues guitar to the lovely, old style theater environs of The Lyric in Baltimore.

Throughout the nights 11-song set, Buddy told stories of his youth and shared anecdotes of artists he’s played with to the full house of blues fans.

He smiled throughout the show, obviously having fun while thrilling his fans with his guitar fireworks.

His touring band consisted of bassist Orlando Wright, second guitarist Ric Hall, drummer Tom Hambridge, and keyboardist Dan Souvigny.

Buddy was joined by his special guest Bobby Rush on several songs in the set such as Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and “The Same Thing” and then BB King’s “Rock Me Baby” to close the evening.

The Texas Canon: How Stevie Ray Vaughan made guitar geeks pay attention

Welcome to  the Texas Canon , a series that dives into the movies, TV shows, books, albums, and more that represent us and reach far beyond the Lone Star State’s borders. Today we look at legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan 's debut album, 'Texas Flood.'

Stevie Ray Vaughan wasn’t the first blues artist to see the sweet-and-lowdown potential of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”; one of his idols, Buddy Guy got there first, in the late 1960s. But when Vaughan recorded the song for his 1983 debut album Texas Flood , he made it his own. Somewhere between his badass laconic drawl and his monstrous fretwork, “Mary” became an SRV joint, piquant and soulful and slick all at once.

Those same qualities apply to the entirety of Texas Flood , an album that made an unmistakable announcement: This is a guitarist you need to take very, very seriously. Drenched in the traditions of the blues masters — including Guy, Albert King, and Muddy Waters — Texas Flood found immediate crossover appeal among rockers, myself included, intoxicated by virtuoso guitar playing. The title song, originally recorded by Larry Davis (and which describes a condition with which Houstonians are all too familiar), sets the tone for the entire session, all bent notes and killer chords, a blues storm coming straight at you. It is natural disaster as cathartic release, a warning that Hurricane Stevie has arrived and you’d best take cover.

Vaughan grew up following the lead of older brother Jimmie, a fierce bluesman in his own right who found his own rock ‘n’ roll following with The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Growing up in Oak Cliff, a proudly blue-collar (and now rapidly gentrifying) Dallas neighborhood, he found refuge from a raging alcoholic father in music. Like so many musicians, he found his way to Austin as quickly as he could, gigging around town, making his name, and forming Double Trouble, the trio with which he recorded. It’s not hard to find an old head eager to tell you about when he or she used to see Vaughan jamming at this or that Austin (or Dallas) nightspot. There’s no questioning Vaughan’s candidacy for the Texas Canon; he’s about as Lone Star as they come.

A first listen of Texas Flood brings a bit of jolt and a few thoughts. Such as: The way this guy manhandles his ax, he must have giant hands. He does indeed, much like another one of his idols, this one on the rock side, Jimi Hendrix (whose “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” Vaughan covered for his exemplary sophomore release, Couldn’t Stand the Weather . There’s something about Stevie Ray Vaughan and climate conditions). This observation leads to the next: He had remarkable power to go with his blazing speed. Listen to instrumentals like “Rude Mood,” off Texas Flood , or “Scuttle Buttin’,” which kicks off Couldn’t Stand the Weather , to get a sense of why Vaughan remains a god to guitar geeks everywhere. But he knew how to slow things down, too. “Lenny” (from Texas Flood ), a lovely instrumental ballad, brings to mind another Hendrix song Vaughan liked to cover, “Little Wing.”

Like anyone who gets to the top, Vaughan had help along the way, including from John Hammond, the producer/scout who brought Vaughan to the attention of Epic Records; David Bowie, who enlisted Vaughan to play on his 1983 album Let’s Dance (that’s Vaughan soloing on the title single); and Jackson Browne, whose personal recording studio hosted the Texas Flood session. But when Texas Flood hit the scene, he was a session man no more. “Love Struck Baby” earned regular rotation on the fledgling MTV, and Double Trouble concerts became hot tickets around the world.

Those concerts could be hit or miss. Vaughan inherited the family substance addiction, and he spent a lot of time drunk and stoned. You could usually tell when he was deep under the influence in concert; his playing got sloppy, though the skill was always evident, and his underrated singing voice, both clear and down-and-dirty when he was in good shape, would descend into slurring. Conversely, when he was sober, there was nobody like him. I was fortunate enough to see him on the 1989 tour he co-headlined with Jeff Beck (Beck came on first, if memory serves). It was a religious experience, a meeting of two guitar gods at the height of their powers, one of those shows you’d like to bottle up and keep with you forever.

I also remember walking across the college quad a little less than a year later and overhearing that Vaughan was dead. They must be mistaken, I thought. Then I saw the afternoon newspaper — these existed before the internet made them obsolete — and read the news for myself. A helicopter crash in Wisconsin. Only 35 years old. I must admit my first thought was selfish (I was 20, whaddya want?). I’ll never get to see him play again.

But I can always listen to Texas Flood , which I turn to far more often than Couldn’t Stand the Weather , or the perfectly adequate Soul to Soul (1985), or his other releases. To me, it remains the purest encapsulation of his musical fury, when he was ravenously hungry and yet, somehow, already fully formed.
